Quilon or Kollam, an old seaport town on the Arabian coast, stands on the Ashtamudi Lake. Merchant Sulaiman of Siraf in Persia (9th Century) found Kollam to be the only port in India, touched by the huge Chinese junks, on his way from Carton of Persian Gulf. Marco Polo, the great Venician traveller, who was in Chinese service under Kublahan in 1275, visited Kollam and other towns on the west coast, in his capacity as a Chinese mandarin.

The Portuguese were the first Europeans to establish a trading center at Kollam in 1502. Then came the Dutch followed by the British in 1795. A British garrison was stationed at Kollam in pursuance of a treaty between Travancore and the British.

Velu Thampi Dalawa of Travancore did much for the improvement of the Kollam town. He built new bazaars and invited merchants from Madras and Thirunelveli to settle here. Kollam later became the capital of the enlightened and liberal rulers of Desinganad. It was also the nerve center for the rebellion organized by Velu Thampi against the British.

The Pathanamthitta is a large municipality town situated in the centre of Travancore region of Kerala. The name of the place is derived from “Pathanam” and “thitta”, which together means "array of ten family houses by the riverside", in Malayalam. The lowlands contain coconut trees that lie along the western borders of the Alappuzha District. There is also an abundance of water resources present in this district, which is used for irrigation in the Kallada and Pamba irrigation projects.

The regions that form the part of present Pathanamthitta District were formerly the part of the Pandalam reign, which was associated with the Pandya Kingdom. These regions became the part of this district when Pandalam was added to the princely state of Travancore in 1820.

ഇന്ത്യയുടെ തെക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറേയറ്റത്തുള്ള സംസ്ഥാനമാണ്‌ കേരളം. അറബിക്കടലിനും സഹ്യപര്‍വതത്തിനും ഇടയിലായി കിടക്കുന്ന ഈ ഭൂപ്രദേശത്തിന്‌ 38863 ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ വിസ്‌തൃതിയുണ്ട്‌. മലയാളം മാതൃഭാഷയായിട്ടുള്ള കേരളം ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യയെന്നു വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഭാഷാ -സാംസ്‌കാരിക മേഖലയിലെ നാലു സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളില്‍ ഒന്നാണ്‌. തമിഴ്‌നാടും കര്‍ണ്ണാടകവുമാണ്‌ കേരളത്തിന്റെ അയല്‍ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങള്‍. പോണ്ടിച്ചേരി (പുതുച്ചേരി) യുടെ ഭാഗമായ മയ്യഴി (മാഹി / Mahe) കേരളത്തിനുള്ളില്‍ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു. പടിഞ്ഞാറ്‌ അറബിക്കടലിലുള്ള ലക്ഷദ്വീപുകള്‍ കേന്ദ്രഭരണപ്രദേശമാണെങ്കിലും ഭാഷാപരമായും സാംസ്‌കാരികമായും കേരളത്തോട്‌ അഭേദ്യമായ ബന്ധം പുലര്‍ത്തുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യയുടെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യലബ്ധിക്കു മുമ്പ്‌ വിവിധ രാജാക്കന്മാര്‍ക്കു കീഴിലുള്ള നാട്ടുരാജ്യങ്ങളായിരുന്നു കേരളം. 1949 ജൂലൈ ഒന്നിന്‌ തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍, കൊച്ചി എന്നീ നാട്ടുരാജ്യങ്ങള്‍ ചേര്‍ത്ത്‌ തിരു-കൊച്ചി സംസ്ഥാനം രൂപവത്‌കരിച്ചു. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ്‌ ഭരണത്തിനു കീഴില്‍ മദ്രാസ്‌ സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ (ഇന്നത്തെ തമിഴ്‌നാട്‌) ഒരു ജില്ലയായിരുന്ന മലബാര്‍ പിന്നീട്‌ തിരു-കൊച്ചിയോടു ചേര്‍ത്തതോടെ 1956 നവംബര്‍ ഒന്നിന്‌ ഇന്നത്തെ കേരള സംസ്ഥാനം നിലവില്‍ വന്നു. മലയാളികളുടെ ദീര്‍ഘകാലത്തെ ആവശ്യമായിരുന്നു ഐക്യകേരളം.

പൗരാണികമായ ചരിത്രവും ദീര്‍ഘകാലത്തെ വിദേശവ്യാപാരബന്ധവും കലാശാസ്‌ത്രരംഗങ്ങളിലെ പാരമ്പര്യവും കേരളത്തിന്‌ അവകാശപ്പെടാനുണ്ട്‌. ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും ഉയര്‍ന്ന സാക്ഷരതാനിരക്കുള്ള സംസ്ഥാനമായ കേരളം സാമൂഹികനീതി, ആരോഗ്യ നിലവാരം, ലിംഗസമത്വം, ക്രമസമാധാന നില, വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം തുടങ്ങിയ രംഗങ്ങളിലും ഉയര്‍ന്ന നിലയിലാണ്‌. രാജ്യത്തെ ഏറ്റവും കുറഞ്ഞ ശിശുമരണനിരക്ക്‌ കേരളത്തിലാണ്‌.

സസ്യശ്യാമളവും ജലസമൃദ്ധവുമായ കേരളത്തെ മഴയുടെ സ്വന്തം നാടായി വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ചാല്‍ തെറ്റില്ല. മികച്ച കാലാവസ്ഥയും ഗതാഗതസൗകര്യങ്ങളും സാംസ്‌കാരിക പൈതൃകവും കേരളത്തെ വിനോദ സഞ്ചാരികളുടെ പ്രിയങ്കരമായ ഇടമാക്കുന്നു. മതമൈത്രിക്കു പണ്ടേ പ്രശസ്‌തമായ കേരളം വിവിധ സംസ്‌കാരങ്ങളുടെ സംഗമ ഭൂമിയാണ്‌. ഉയര്‍ന്ന രാഷ്ട്രീയ ബോധവും മാധ്യമങ്ങള്‍ക്കുള്ള സ്വാധീനതയും സംസ്‌കാര സ്വാംശീകരണശേഷിയും കേരളത്തെ ഇന്ത്യയിലെ സവിശേഷ ഭൂവിഭാഗങ്ങളിലൊന്നായി നില നിര്‍ത്തുന്നു.

ചരിത്രം

കേരളം എന്ന വാക്ക്‌ എവിടെ നിന്നുണ്ടായി എന്നതിനെപ്പറ്റി പണ്ഡിതന്മാര്‍ പലതരം വാദങ്ങള്‍ ഉയര്‍ത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. കേരളത്തിന്റെ പേരിനെപ്പറ്റി അഭിപ്രായയൈക്യമില്ലെങ്കിലും 'ചേര്‍' (കര, ചെളി...) 'അളം' (പ്രദേശം) എന്നീ വാക്കുകള്‍ ചേര്‍ന്നാണ്‌ 'കേരളം' ഉണ്ടായതെന്ന വാദമാണ്‌ പൊതുവെ സ്വീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ളത്‌.(1) കടലില്‍ നിന്നുണ്ടായ ഭൂപ്രദേശമെന്നും പര്‍വതവും കടലും തമ്മില്‍ ചേരുന്ന പ്രദേശമെന്നുമുള്ള അര്‍ത്ഥങ്ങള്‍ ഈ വാക്കുകള്‍ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. പ്രാചീന വിദേശ സഞ്ചാരികള്‍ കേരളത്തെ 'മലബാര്‍' എന്നും വിളിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്‌.

ആയിരക്കണക്കിനു വര്‍ഷം മുമ്പു തന്നെ കേരളത്തില്‍ മനുഷ്യവാസം ആരംഭിച്ചിരുന്നു. മലയോരങ്ങളിലാണ്‌ ആദ്യമായി മനുഷ്യവാസം തുടങ്ങിയത്‌.(2) പ്രാചീന ശിലായുഗത്തിലെ ഏതാനും അവശിഷ്ടങ്ങള്‍ കേരളത്തിലെ ചില പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നു കിട്ടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. ഈ പ്രാക്‌ ചരിത്രാവശിഷ്ടങ്ങള്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞാല്‍ കേരളത്തിലെ മനുഷ്യവാസത്തെപ്പറ്റി വിപുലമായ തെളിവുകള്‍ നല്‍കുന്നത്‌ മഹാശിലാസ്‌മാരകങ്ങള്‍ (megalithic monuments) ആണ്‌. ശവപ്പറമ്പുകളാണ്‌ മിക്ക മഹാശിലാസ്‌മാരകങ്ങളും. കുടക്കല്ല്‌, തൊപ്പിക്കല്ല്‌, കന്മേശ, മുനിയറ, നന്നങ്ങാടി തുടങ്ങിയ വിവിധതരം മഹാശിലാ ശവക്കല്ലറകള്‍ കണ്ടെടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. ബി. സി. 500 - എ.ഡി. 300 കാലമാണ്‌ ഇവയുടേതെന്നു കരുതുന്നു.(3) മലമ്പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നാണ്‌ മഹാശിലാവശിഷ്ടങ്ങള്‍ ഏറിയപങ്കും കിട്ടിയിട്ടുള്ളത്‌ എന്നതില്‍ നിന്നും ആദിമ ജനവാസമേഖലകളും അവിടെയായിരുന്നുവെന്നു മനസ്സിലാക്കാം.

കേരളത്തിലെ ആവാസകേന്ദ്രങ്ങള്‍ വികസിച്ചതിന്റെ അടുത്തഘട്ടം സംഘകാലമാണ്‌. പ്രാചീന തമിഴ്‌ സാഹിത്യകൃതികള്‍ ഉണ്ടായ കാലമാണിത്‌. സംഘകാലമായ എ.ഡി. മൂന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടു മുതല്‍ എട്ടാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടു വരെ കേരളത്തിലേക്ക്‌ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ മറ്റു ഭാഗങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്ന്‌ കുടിയേറ്റങ്ങളുണ്ടായി. ബുദ്ധ, ജൈന മതങ്ങളും ഇക്കാലത്ത്‌ പ്രചരിച്ചു. ബ്രാഹ്മണരും കേരളത്തിലെത്തി. 64 ബ്രാഹ്മണ ഗ്രാമങ്ങള്‍ കേരളത്തിന്റെ പല ഭാഗങ്ങളിലായി ഉയര്‍ന്നു വന്നു. എ.ഡി. ഒന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടില്‍ത്തന്നെ ക്രിസ്‌തുമതം കേരളത്തിലെത്തിയതായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. എ. ഡി. 345-ല്‍ കാനായിലെ തോമസിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തില്‍ പശ്ചിമേഷ്യയില്‍ നിന്ന്‌ ഏഴു ഗോത്രങ്ങളില്‍പ്പെട്ട 400 ക്രൈസ്‌തവര്‍ എത്തിയതോടെ ക്രിസ്‌തുമതം പ്രബലമാകാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. സമുദ്രവ്യാപാരത്തിലൂടെ അറേബ്യയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന കേരളത്തില്‍ എ. ഡി. എട്ടാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടോടെ ഇസ്‌ലാം മതവും എത്തിച്ചേര്‍ന്നു.

തമിഴകത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായാണ്‌ പ്രാചീന കേരളത്തെ ചരിത്ര രചയിതാക്കള്‍ പൊതുവേ പരിഗണിക്കുന്നത്‌. കേരളത്തിലെ ജനങ്ങളും ഭൂപ്രകൃതിയുമായുള്ള ബന്ധവും ആവാസകേന്ദ്രങ്ങളുടെയും ഉത്‌പാദന സമ്പ്രദായത്തിന്റെയും ഭാഷയുടെയും വികാസവും സവിശേഷതകളും കേരളത്തിന്റെ തനതു വ്യക്തിത്വം രൂപപ്പെടാന്‍ സഹായിച്ചു. കൃഷിയിലും വിഭവങ്ങളിലുമുള്ള നിയന്ത്രണം ഇവിടെത്തന്നെ വളര്‍ന്നു വന്ന സാമൂഹികശക്തികള്‍ക്കായപ്പോള്‍ കേരളം നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകള്‍ നീണ്ടു നിന്ന സാമൂഹിക മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍ക്കു വിധേയമായി ചെറു നാടുകളുടെയും വലിയ രാജ്യങ്ങളുടെയും സവിശേഷ സാമൂഹിക സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളുടെയും രൂപപ്പെടല്‍ ഉണ്ടായി.

സാമ്രാജ്യങ്ങളും യുദ്ധങ്ങളും ഭാഷയുടെയും സാഹിത്യത്തിന്റെയും വികാസവും വൈദേശിക ശക്തികളുടെ വരവും നീണ്ടകാലത്തെ കോളനി വാഴ്‌ചയും ജാതിവ്യവസ്ഥയും ചൂഷണവും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസപുരോഗതിയും ശാസ്‌ത്രമുന്നേറ്റവും വ്യാപാര വളര്‍ച്ചയും സാമൂഹിക നവോത്ഥാന, ജനാധിപത്യ പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങളുടെ ആവിര്‍ഭാവവുമെല്ലാം ചേര്‍ന്ന ചരിത്രമാണത്‌.

സൗകര്യത്തിനു വേണ്ടി കേരളത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രത്തെ പ്രാചീന ചരിത്രം, മധ്യകാല ചരിത്രം, ആധുനിക ചരിത്രം എന്നു മൂന്നായി വിഭജിക്കാം.

ഭൂപ്രകൃതി

ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സ്വന്തം നാട്‌ (God's Own Country) എന്ന പരസ്യവാക്യം കേരളത്തെ സംബന്ധിച്ച്‌ അതിശയോക്തിയല്ല. ഉഷ്‌ണമേഖലാ കാലാവസ്ഥയും സമൃദ്ധമായ മഴക്കാലങ്ങളും സുന്ദരമായ ഭൂപ്രകൃതിയും ജലസമ്പത്തും വനങ്ങളും നീണ്ട കടല്‍ത്തീരവും നാല്‌പതിലധികം നദികളും കേരളത്തെ അനുഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു. ഉത്തര അക്ഷാംശം 8 ഡിഗ്രി 17' 30" നും 12 ഡിഗ്രി 47' 40" നും ഇടയ്‌ക്കും പൂര്‍വ്വരേഖാംശം 74 ഡിഗ്രി 7' 47" നും 77 ഡിഗ്രി 37' 12" നും ഇടയ്‌ക്കുമാണ്‌ ഭൂമിശാസ്‌ത്രപരമായി കേരളത്തിന്റെ സ്ഥാനം. സഹ്യാദ്രിക്കും അറബിക്കടലിനുമിടയില്‍ ഹരിതാഭമായ ഒരു അരഞ്ഞാണം പോലെ കിടക്കുന്ന ഈ ഭൂപ്രദേശത്തിന്റെ ഉത്‌പത്തിയെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള പ്രഖ്യാതമായ പുരാവൃത്തമാണ്‌ പരശുരാമ കഥ. മഹാവിഷ്‌ണുവിന്റെ ദശാവതാരങ്ങളിലൊരാളായ പരശുരാമന്‍ മഴു എറിഞ്ഞ്‌ കടലില്‍ നിന്ന്‌ ഉയര്‍ത്തിയെടുത്ത പ്രദേശമാണ്‌ കേരളമെന്നാണ്‌ ഐതിഹ്യം.

ഭൂപ്രകൃതിയനുസരിച്ച്‌ കേരളത്തെ പലതായി വിഭജിക്കാറുണ്ട്‌. മലനാട്‌, ഇടനാട്‌, തീരപ്രദേശം എന്ന സാമാന്യ വിഭജനത്തിനാണു കൂടുതല്‍ പ്രചാരം. കുറേക്കൂടി സൂക്ഷ്‌മമായി കിഴക്കന്‍ മലനാട്‌ (Eastern Highland), അടിവാരം (Foot Hill Zone), ഉയര്‍ന്ന കുന്നിന്‍ പ്രദേശങ്ങള്‍ (Hilly Uplands), പാലക്കാട്‌ ചുരം, തൃശ്ശൂര്‍ - കാഞ്ഞങ്ങാട്‌ സമതലം, എറണാകുളം - തിരുവനന്തപുരം റോളിങ്ങ്‌ സമതലം, പടിഞ്ഞാറന്‍ തീരസമതലം എന്നീ പ്രകൃതി മേഖലകളായും വിഭജിക്കാറുണ്ട്‌. സഹ്യാദ്രിയോടു ചേര്‍ന്ന്‌ തെക്കു വടക്കായി നീണ്ടു കിടക്കുന്നതാണ്‌ മലനാട്‌ അഥവാ കിഴക്കന്‍ മലനാട്‌. വന്യമൃഗങ്ങള്‍ നിറഞ്ഞ കാടുകളാണ്‌ ഈ മേഖലയില്‍ ഏറിയപങ്കും. ഉഷ്‌ണ മേഖലാ നിത്യഹരിത വനങ്ങളും ചോലവനങ്ങളും ഇവിടെയുണ്ട്‌. കേരളത്തിലെ പ്രധാന നദികളെല്ലാം ഉദ്‌ഭവിക്കുന്നതും മലനാട്ടില്‍ നിന്നു തന്നെ. പാലക്കാട്‌ ജില്ലയിലെ മണ്ണാര്‍ക്കാടിനടുത്തുള്ള സൈലന്റ്‌ വാലിയാണ്‌ ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്‌തമായ നിത്യഹരിത വനം. സൈലന്റ്‌ വാലിയും ഇരവികുളവും ദേശീയോദ്യാനങ്ങളാണ്‌. ആനമുടി (2695 മീ.)യാണ്‌ കേരളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും ഉയര്‍ന്ന കൊടുമുടി. അഗസ്‌ത്യകൂടം (1869 മീ.) തെക്കേയറ്റത്തെ ഏറ്റവും ഉയര്‍ന്ന കൊടുമുടിയും. സഹ്യാദ്രിക്കു സമാന്തരമാണ്‌ തെക്കു വടക്കു നീളത്തിലുള്ള പടിഞ്ഞാറന്‍ തീരസമതലം. മലനാടിനും തീരസമതലത്തിനും ഇടയ്‌ക്കാണ്‌ ഇടനാട്‌. കുന്നുകളും സമതലങ്ങളും അടങ്ങിയ ഭൂപ്രകൃതിയാണിവിടെ.

പടിഞ്ഞാറ്‌ അറബിക്കടലിലേക്കോ കായലുകളിലേക്കോ ഒഴുകുന്ന 41 നദികള്‍, കിഴക്കോട്ടൊഴുകുന്ന മൂന്നു നദികള്‍, കായലുകള്‍, തോടുകള്‍ തുടങ്ങിയവ കേരളത്തെ ജലസമ്പന്നമാക്കുന്നു.

കാലാവസ്ഥ

ഭൂമധ്യരേഖയില്‍ നിന്ന്‌ 8 ഡിഗ്രി മാത്രം അകന്നു കിടക്കുന്നതിനാല്‍ ഉഷ്‌ണമേഖലാ കാലാവസ്ഥയാണ്‌ കേരളത്തില്‍ അനുഭവപ്പെടുന്നത്‌. ഭൂതലത്തിന്റെ നിമ്‌നോന്നതാവസ്ഥ കാലാവസ്ഥയെ സാരമായി ബാധിക്കുന്നു. കേരളത്തിലെ ഋതുക്കളെ മൂന്നായി വിഭജിക്കാം. പടിഞ്ഞാറന്‍ (കോട) മഴക്കാലം - (ജൂണ്‍ - സെപ്‌തംബര്‍), കിഴക്കന്‍ മഴക്കാലം (ഒക്ടോബര്‍ - ഡിസംബര്‍), വേനല്‍ക്കാലം (ജനുവരി - മേയ്‌) എന്നിവയാണവ(4). വേനല്‍ക്കാലത്തെ രണ്ടായും കണക്കാക്കാം. ജനുവരി - ഫെബ്രുവരിയിലെ തണുപ്പ്‌ കാലവും മാര്‍ച്ച്‌ - മേയിലെ വേനല്‍ക്കാലവും. പേരിനു മാത്രമുള്ളതാണ്‌ കേരളത്തിലെ തണുപ്പുകാലം. താപനില 22 ഡിഗ്രി സെല്‍ഷ്യസ്‌ താഴെപ്പോകുന്നത്‌ കേരളത്തില്‍ അപൂര്‍വ്വമാണ്‌. കേരളത്തില്‍ കടലോര പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍ ഒരിക്കലും ഉഷ്‌ണനില 17.5 ഡിഗ്രി സെല്‍ഷ്യസില്‍ കുറഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ല(5). വേനല്‍ക്കാലത്തെ ശരാശരി താപനില 32 ഡിഗ്രി സെല്‍ഷ്യസിനും 38 ഡിഗ്രി സെല്‍ഷ്യസിനും ഇടയിലാണ്‌.

വേഗം കുറഞ്ഞ കാറ്റുകളും ഉയര്‍ന്ന അളവിലുള്ള മഴയുമാണ്‌ കേരളത്തിന്റെ കാലാവസ്ഥയുടെ സവിശേഷതകള്‍. പ്രധാന മഴക്കാലം തെക്കു പടിഞ്ഞാറന്‍ മണ്‍സൂണ്‍ അഥവാ ഇടവപ്പാതിയാണ്‌. വടക്കു കിഴക്കന്‍ മണ്‍സൂണ്‍ അഥവാ തുലാവര്‍ഷമാണ്‌ മറ്റൊരു മഴക്കാലം. പ്രതിവര്‍ഷം 120-140 ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ കേരളത്തില്‍ മഴക്കാലമാണ്‌. ശരാശരി പ്രതിവര്‍ഷ മഴവീഴ്‌ച 3017 മില്ലി മീറ്ററായി കണക്കാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. മഴകള്‍ പലപ്പോഴും വെള്ളപ്പൊക്കം സൃഷ്ടിച്ച്‌ കേരളീയരെ ദുരിതത്തിലാഴ്‌ത്തുന്നതു പതിവാണ്‌.

സമ്പദ്‌ഘടന

ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ദേശീയ സാമ്പത്തികരംഗത്തു നിന്നു വേര്‍തിരിച്ചു കാണാനാവില്ലെങ്കിലും ഫെഡറല്‍ സംവിധാനത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായതു കൊണ്ട്‌ സംസ്ഥാനമെന്ന നിലയില്‍ കേരളത്തിന്റെ സമ്പദ്‌ഘടനയ്‌ക്ക്‌ സവിശേഷമായ സ്ഥാനമുണ്ട്‌. മനുഷ്യവികസനശേഷിയുടെ അടിസ്ഥാനസൂചകങ്ങളില്‍ കേരളം ആര്‍ജ്ജിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള നേട്ടങ്ങള്‍ ശ്രദ്ധ നേടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. മറ്റ്‌ ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച്‌ കുറഞ്ഞ ജനസംഖ്യാ വളര്‍ച്ച നിരക്ക്‌, ദേശീയ ശരാശരിയെക്കാള്‍ ഉയര്‍ന്ന ജനസാന്ദ്രത, ഉയര്‍ന്ന ആയുര്‍ദൈര്‍ഘ്യം, ഉയര്‍ന്ന സാമൂഹിക-ആരോഗ്യാവബോധം, കുറഞ്ഞ ശിശുമരണനിരക്ക്‌, ഉയര്‍ന്ന സാക്ഷരത, സാര്‍വജനീനമായ പ്രാഥമിക വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം, ഉന്നത വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ സൗകര്യം തുടങ്ങിയവയെല്ലാം ചേര്‍ന്നുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന ഗുണമേന്മയുള്ള മനുഷ്യശേഷി സാമ്പത്തിക വളര്‍ച്ചയ്‌ക്ക്‌ അനുകൂല ഘടകം സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നു. "എന്നാല്‍ ഉത്‌പാദനമേഖലയിലെ മാന്ദ്യം, ഉയര്‍ന്ന തൊഴിലില്ലായ്‌മ, വില വര്‍ധന, താഴ്‌ന്ന പ്രതിശീര്‍ഷ വരുമാനം, ഉയര്‍ന്ന ഉപഭോഗം എന്നിവ ഒത്തുചേര്‍ന്ന്‌ കേരള സമ്പദ്‌ഘടന തികച്ചും സങ്കീര്‍ണ്ണമായ ചിത്രമാണ്‌ പ്രദാനം ചെയ്യുന്നത്‌".

ഉയര്‍ന്ന ആയുര്‍ദൈര്‍ഘ്യത്തിന്റെ കാര്യത്തില്‍ ദക്ഷിണ കൊറിയ, മലേഷ്യ, ചൈന തുടങ്ങിയ ഏഷ്യന്‍ രാജ്യങ്ങളുമായാണ്‌ കേരളത്തെ താരതമ്യം ചെയ്യാവുന്നത്‌. എന്നാല്‍ കേരളത്തില്‍ നിന്നു വ്യത്യസ്‌തമായി ആ രാജ്യങ്ങള്‍ സാമ്പത്തിക വളര്‍ച്ചയുടെ പാതയിലാണ്‌ (11). മനുഷ്യവികസന ഇന്‍ഡെക്‌സ്‌ അനുസരിച്ച്‌ കേരളം ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങള്‍ക്കിടയില്‍ മുന്നിട്ടു നിന്നിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും പ്രതിശീര്‍ഷ വരുമാനത്തിന്റെ കാര്യത്തില്‍ ദേശീയ ശരാശരിയെക്കാള്‍ സമീപകാലം വരെ താഴെയായിരുന്നു. അതേസമയം വളര്‍ച്ചയുടെ സ്വഭാവമാണ്‌ സമ്പദ്‌ഘടന പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്‌. "എണ്‍പതുകളുടെ അവസാനം മുതല്‍ നമ്മുടെ സാമ്പത്തിക വളര്‍ച്ച ദേശീയ ശരാശരിയെക്കാള്‍ ഉയര്‍ന്ന വിതാനത്തിലേക്കു ഗതിമാറി. അതിപ്പോഴും തുടരുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ ഈ വളര്‍ച്ചയ്‌ക്ക്‌ ഒരു അടിസ്ഥാന ദൗര്‍ബല്യമുണ്ട്‌. ആഗോളവത്‌കരണത്തിന്റെ പ്രതികൂല പ്രത്യാഘാതങ്ങള്‍ കാര്‍ഷിക, പരമ്പരാഗത മേഖലകളെ തകര്‍ത്തു. ഈ തുറകളില്‍ ആറേഴു വര്‍ഷമായി ഏതാണ്ട്‌ സമ്പൂര്‍ണ്ണ മുരടിപ്പാണ്‌. ഇതിലൊരു മാറ്റം വരുന്നു എന്നത്‌ ശുഭോദര്‍ക്കമാണ്‌" (12). നീതിപൂര്‍വവും സ്ഥായിയും ആയ ദ്രുതഗതിയിലുള്ള സാമ്പത്തിക വളര്‍ച്ചയാണ്‌ കേരളം ലക്ഷ്യമിടുന്നത്‌. അതേസമയം വികസനമേഖലയിലെ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ഇടപെടല്‍ ദുര്‍ബലപ്പെടുത്തുകയും സാമൂഹികക്ഷേമ ചെലവുകള്‍ കുറയ്‌ക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന നയം പിന്തുടരുന്നുമില്ല.

ദേശീയ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യലബ്ധിക്കു മുമ്പു നിലനിന്ന തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍, കൊച്ചി, മലബാര്‍ മേഖലകളിലെ വികാസങ്ങളാണ്‌ ആധുനികകേരളത്തിന്റെ സമ്പദ്‌ഘടനയുടെ ചരിത്രപശ്ചാത്തലം. ഭൂമിശാസ്‌ത്ര സവിശേഷതകള്‍ കേരളത്തിന്റെ സമ്പദ്‌ഘടനയ്‌ക്ക്‌ പ്രകൃതി സമ്പത്തിന്റെ വൈവിധ്യത്തോടൊപ്പം തൊഴില്‍പരമായ വൈവിധ്യവും സമ്മാനിക്കുന്നു. മൂന്നു പ്രധാന ഭൂപ്രകൃതി മേഖലകളില്‍ ഏറ്റവും ജനസാന്ദ്രത കൂടിയ തീരസമതലത്തിലെ (ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്ററിന്‌ 819 എന്ന കേരളത്തിന്റെ ജനസാന്ദ്രത ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളില്‍ ഏറ്റവും ഉയര്‍ന്നതാണ്‌ - 2001 സെന്‍സസ്‌) ഫലഭൂയിഷ്‌ഠമായ മണ്ണും നദീതാഴ്‌വരകളും കായലുകളും മീന്‍പിടിത്തത്തിനും നെല്ല്‌, തെങ്ങ്‌, പച്ചക്കറികള്‍ തുടങ്ങിയവയുടെ കൃഷിക്കും സഹായകമാണ്‌. ഇടനാടന്‍ പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍ തെങ്ങ്‌, നെല്ല്‌, മരിച്ചീനി, കമുക്‌, കശുമാവ്‌, റബര്‍, കുരുമുളക്‌, ഇഞ്ചി തുടങ്ങിയവ കൃഷിചെയ്യുന്നു. ജനസാന്ദ്രത കുറഞ്ഞ കിഴക്കന്‍ മലനാട്ടിലെ കാപ്പി, തേയില, റബര്‍ എന്നിവയുടെ കൃഷി കൊളോണിയല്‍ കാലഘട്ടം മുതല്‍ ആരംഭിച്ചതാണ്‌. ഇരുപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ മധ്യത്തോടടുത്ത്‌ കിഴക്കന്‍ മലയോരമേഖലയിലേക്കുണ്ടായ കുടിയേറ്റം സമ്പദ്‌ഘടനയുടെ വികാസത്തില്‍ വലിയ പങ്കുവഹിച്ചു.

നാണ്യവിളകള്‍ക്കും ഭക്ഷ്യവിളകള്‍ക്കും അനുയോജ്യമാണ്‌ കേരളത്തിലെ കാര്‍ഷിക കാലാവസ്ഥാ ഘടകങ്ങള്‍. കൊളോണിയല്‍ വാഴ്‌ചക്കാലത്തെ താല്‌പര്യങ്ങളും ഭരണസംവിധാനവും കമ്പോളസ്ഥിതിയും നാണ്യവിളകള്‍ക്ക്‌ മേല്‍ക്കോയ്‌മ നല്‍കി. കയര്‍വ്യവസായം, തടിവ്യവസായം, ഭക്ഷ്യ എണ്ണ ഉത്‌പാദനം തുടങ്ങിയവയ്‌ക്കു വഴിയൊരുക്കിയത്‌ കൃഷിയാണ്‌. ധാതുക്കള്‍, രാസവസ്‌തുക്കള്‍, എന്‍ജിനീയറിങ്ങ്‌ തുടങ്ങിയവയെ ആധാരമാക്കിയുള്ള വലിയ ആധുനിക വ്യവസായങ്ങളും ഇതിനൊപ്പം വികസിച്ചു. പൊതുമേഖലാ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളും സ്വകാര്യ മേഖലാ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളും ഈ രംഗങ്ങളിലുണ്ട്‌. കയര്‍ നിര്‍മ്മാണം, കൈത്തറി, കരകൗശലം തുടങ്ങിയവ കേരളത്തിന്റെ പരമ്പരാഗത വ്യവസായങ്ങളാണ്‌.

കേരളത്തിന്റെ സമ്പദ്‌ഘടന കാര്‍ഷികാധിഷ്‌ഠിതമാണെന്നു പറയാനാവില്ല. ഈ പ്രാഥമിക മേഖല (കാര്‍ഷിക മേഖല) യോ വിവിധ ഉത്‌പാദന - നിര്‍മ്മാണ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ നടക്കുന്ന ദ്വിതീയ മേഖല (വ്യവസായ മേഖല) യോ അല്ല തൃതീയ മേഖലയായ സേവന മേഖലയാണ്‌ കേരളത്തിന്റെ വികസനാനുഭവത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ വശം. വരുമാനത്തിന്റെയും തൊഴിലിന്റെയും വലിയ പങ്ക്‌ ഉണ്ടാകുന്നതും ഇവിടെ നിന്നു തന്നെ. "പ്രാഥമിക, ദ്വിതീയ, തൃതീയ മേഖലകളിലൂടെ കടന്ന്‌ വികസനത്തിന്റെ ഗിരിശൃംഗങ്ങളിലേക്കു ലക്ഷ്യമിടുന്ന സാമ്പത്തിക വളര്‍ച്ചാ സിദ്ധാന്തത്തിനു കടകവിരുദ്ധമായി പ്രാഥമിക മേഖലയില്‍ നിന്നു തൃതീയ മേഖലയിലേക്കു കുതിച്ചു ചാട്ടം നടത്തി വികസിത രാജ്യങ്ങള്‍ക്കൊപ്പം ജനന മരണനിരക്കിലും സാക്ഷരതയിലും ശരാശരി ആയുസ്സിലുമൊക്കെ സ്ഥാനം പിടിച്ച കേരളം, കുറഞ്ഞ പ്രതിശീര്‍ഷ വരുമാനവും ഉയര്‍ന്ന തൊഴിലില്ലായ്‌മയും 'കൈമുതലാ'ക്കിക്കൊണ്ട്‌ ഇവ എങ്ങനെ സാര്‍ത്ഥകമാക്കിയെന്ന ഉത്തരം കിട്ടാത്ത ചോദ്യവുമായി ഏവരുടെയും മുന്നില്‍ നിലകൊള്ളുകയാണ്‌. ഭാരതത്തിലെ മറ്റൊരു സംസ്ഥാനവും ഇത്തരത്തില്‍ ആഗോള ശ്രദ്ധ പിടിച്ചു പറ്റിയിട്ടില്ല. സാമ്പത്തിക രംഗത്തു മാത്രമല്ല രാഷ്ട്രീയ-സാമൂഹിക-സാംസ്‌കാരിക രംഗങ്ങളിലും കേരളത്തിന്റെ മുതല്‍ക്കൂട്ട്‌ വികസിത രാജ്യങ്ങളില്‍ മാതൃകയായി ചര്‍ച്ച ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നു. ഈ ചര്‍ച്ചകളില്‍ 1980-കളുടെ അവസാനം ഏറ്റവും മുന്‍പന്തിയില്‍ കേരള സമ്പദ്‌ഘടന കൈവരിച്ച അപൂര്‍വ്വ നേട്ടം പില്‍ക്കാലത്ത്‌ കേരള മാതൃക (Kerala Model) എന്ന പേരില്‍ അറിയപ്പെട്ടതാണ്‌" (13). ഈ മാതൃകയ്‌ക്കു നേരെ ഇന്ന്‌ ഒട്ടേറെ സംശയങ്ങള്‍ ഉയര്‍ത്തപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്‌. അതിന്റെ സുസ്ഥിരതയില്‍ സാമ്പത്തിക വിദഗ്‌ധര്‍ പലരും ആശങ്ക പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

കേരളത്തിന്റെ സാമൂഹിക വികാസത്തിന്റെ പ്രസക്തമായ സ്രോതസ്സുകള്‍ പത്തൊമ്പതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടു മുതല്‍ സാമൂഹിക ക്ഷേമ നയങ്ങളിലൂടെ അടിസ്ഥാന സൗകര്യങ്ങളില്‍ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ നടത്തുന്ന ചെലവിടലും ഇന്ത്യയുടെ മറ്റു പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലെയും വിദേശത്തെയും വിശേഷിച്ചും ഗള്‍ഫ്‌ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ കേരളീയര്‍ (Non resident Keralites) കൊണ്ടു വരുന്ന വന്‍തുകകളുമാണ്‌ (14). ആധുനിക കേരളത്തിന്റെ സമ്പദ്‌ഘടനയില്‍ നിര്‍ണ്ണായകസ്ഥാനമുണ്ട്‌ പ്രവാസി കേരളീയര്‍ക്ക്‌. എങ്കിലും സമ്പദ്‌ ഘടനയുടെ വികാസത്തിനായി 2007 - 2008 ലെ ബജറ്റ്‌ മുന്നോട്ടു വയ്‌ക്കുന്ന കര്‍മ പരിപാടികളിലെ മുഖ്യഘടകങ്ങള്‍ ഇവയാണ്‌ :

1. കാര്‍ഷിക, പരമ്പരാഗത മേഖലകളുടെ സംരക്ഷണം
2. വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ ആരോഗ്യാദി പൊതു സൗകര്യങ്ങളുടെ ഗുണനിലവാരം മെച്ചപ്പെടുത്തല്‍
3. നല്ല മത്സരശേഷിയുള്ള ഐ.ടി., വിനോദസഞ്ചാരം, ലൈറ്റ്‌ എന്‍ജിനീയറിങ്ങ്‌ തുടങ്ങിയ മേഖലകളിലേക്കുള്ള ചുവടുമാറ്റം.
4. മുകളില്‍പ്പറഞ്ഞ വളര്‍ച്ചാമേഖലകള്‍ക്കാവശ്യമായ ഭൗതിക പശ്ചാത്തലമൊരുക്കല്‍
5. ആദിവാസികള്‍, ദളിതര്‍, മത്സ്യത്തൊഴിലാളികള്‍ എന്നീ വിഭാഗങ്ങളുടെ പിന്നോക്കാവസ്ഥ പരിഹരിക്കല്‍; സത്രീനീതി ഉറപ്പുവരുത്തല്‍; പരിസ്ഥിതി സംരക്ഷണം.
6. ജനാധിപത്യ അധികാര വികേന്ദ്രീകരണവും മറ്റ്‌ ഭരണപരിഷ്‌കാരങ്ങളും അഴിമതി നിര്‍മ്മാര്‍ജ്ജനവും. (15)

വാണിജ്യബാങ്കുകള്‍, സഹകരണബാങ്കുകള്‍ തുടങ്ങിയവ ഉള്‍പ്പെട്ട ധനവിനിമയസംവിധാനങ്ങളും ഗതാഗതരംഗത്തെ വികാസങ്ങളും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം, ആരോഗ്യരംഗം തുടങ്ങിയ മേഖലകളിലെ മുന്നേറ്റങ്ങളും ശക്തമായ തൊഴിലാളി പ്രസ്ഥാനം, സഹകരണപ്രസ്ഥാനം തുടങ്ങിയവയും കേരളത്തിന്റെ സമ്പദ്‌ഘടനയുടെ ശക്തമായ അടിസ്ഥാനങ്ങളാണ്‌.

ഉത്സവങ്ങള്‍, ആഘോഷങ്ങള്‍

കേരളീയ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ പ്രസരിപ്പു മുഴുവന്‍ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നത്‌ ഉത്സവങ്ങളിലാണ്‌. സാമൂഹികമായ കൂട്ടായ്‌മയുടെ ആവിഷ്‌കാരങ്ങളായ ഒട്ടേറെ ഉത്സവങ്ങളുണ്ട്‌. മിക്ക കലകളും വളര്‍ന്നു വികസിച്ചതും ആവിഷ്‌കരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നതും ഉത്സവങ്ങളോടനുബന്ധിച്ചാണ്‌. ദേവാലയങ്ങളുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട ഉത്സവങ്ങളും മതനിരപേക്ഷമായ ഉത്സവങ്ങളുമുണ്ട്‌. ഓണമാണ്‌ കേരളത്തിന്റെ ദേശീയോത്സവം. വിഷു, നവരാത്രി, ദീപാവലി, ശിവരാത്രി, തിരുവാതിര എന്നിവയാണ്‌ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഹൈന്ദവാഘോഷങ്ങള്‍. റംസാന്‍, ബക്രീദ്‌, മുഹറം, മിലാദി ഷരീഫ്‌ തുടങ്ങിയവ മുസ്‌ലീങ്ങളുടെയും, ക്രിസ്‌മസ്‌, ഈസ്റ്റര്‍ എന്നിവ ക്രൈസ്‌തവരുടെയും. ഇവയ്‌ക്കു പുറമെ മൂന്നു മതങ്ങളുടെയും ദേവാലയങ്ങളില്‍ വ്യത്യസ്‌തമായ ഉത്സവങ്ങള്‍ നടക്കുന്നു.

Trekking to the Chembra peak is one of the risky tourist endeavours. Chembra peak is the highest peak in Wayanad at 2100m. above mean sea level. It is14 kms. west of Kalpetta. Trekking to the top of this peak takes almost a day. Tourists can also stay one or two days at the top of the peak in temporary camps. District Tourism Promotion Council provides guides, sleeping bags, canvass huts trekking implements on hire charges to the tourists. The scenic beauty of Wayanad which is visible from the top of Chembra is very challenging and thrilling. The blue eyed water in the lake at the top of the hill never dries up even in the peak of summer. All along the steep and slippery way to the top of the hill, the whispering of the flowing spring which sprouts from the top of the hill accompanies the tourist. If he is fortunate enough, on his way he may come across a passing wild beast, may be a leopard who may instantly hide behind the bushes. Camping in the night with camp fire and sleeping bags at the top of the peak in shivering cold is everlasting experience.

Pakshipathalam

Pakshipathalam in Bramha Giri hills at Thirunelly is a challenging tourist spot. It is 7 kms. north-east of Thirunelly temple and is situated 1740m. above mean sea level. To reach 'Pakshipathalam', 17 kms. have to be covered through wild forest. The deep rock caves formed among the thick blocks of rocks at the northern top end of the Brahmagiri is the abode of various birds and wild beasts. To go to 'Pakshipathalam' special permission has to be obtained from forest department. DTPC (District Tourism Promotion Council) arranges vehicle, guides, camping apparatus etc. to the tourists on hire charges.

Meenmutty Water Fall

12 kms. east of Meppadi. Water falls to a depth of more than 500m. in 3 steps.
Trekking equipments are available at Tourist Information Centre, Kalpetta.

Rivers: Kabani river, one of the three east flowing rivers of Kerala, is an important tributary of the river Cauvery. Kabani and its tributaries constitute a powerful river system in the land scape of Wayanad. Panamaram rivulet takes its origin from the perennial lake called, 'Pookode lake'. It flows swiftly through mountain gorges and joined by other streams, tumbles down into Panamaram valley. Six kilometres further from Panamaram, this river joins with the Mananthavady rivulet, originating from the lower regions of the peak 'Thondarmudi'. From this confluence onwards, the river is known as Kabani, a mighty, perennial river which after entering Karnadaka State, joins with the river Cauvery. Almost entire Wayanad is drained by the Kabani river and its tributaries, namely, Panamaram river, Mananthavady river and Thirunelli river.

Pookot Lake Tourist Resort

A three step water fall of more than 200m inheight with a fantastic scenary provides for white water rafting, swimming, bathing, etc., The tree top huts at Soochipara will give unique view of the valleys of Western Ghats. It is also an ideal place for rock climbing.

Kanthan Para Water Fall
a beautiful water fall of about 30m. in height, 8 km east of Meppadi and 12 kms. south-east of Kalpetta.

Kuruva Dweep

950 acres of evergreen forest surrounded by east flowing river, Kabani. Rare species of birds, orchids and herbs are sovereigns of this supernatural kingdom. It is 17kms. east of Mananthavady and 45 kms. north-west of Sulthan Bathery.

Banasura Dam

The largest earth dam in India, 15 kms north-west of Kalpetta. This large expanse of water bounded except on one side with magnificant hills has heavenly charm.

Pazhassi Tourist Resort
The DTPC has organised a park at Kabani river side, 1 km. south of Mananthavady. Boating in Kabani River Children's park, children's traffic park and sales counter for handicrafts and spices are arranged here.

Lakkidi Ghat Pass
It is the Gate Way of Wayanad above the Thamarassery Ghat Pass of western ghat, at an elevation of 700m above mean sea level. Deep valley to the south with winding roads through thick forest attract many. It is 55 kms. east of Kozhikode and 5 kms. south of Vythiri.

Pilgrim Tourism in Wayanad

Historically and culturally the importance of Wayanad lies very closely linked with its temples. Thirunelly temple, Jain temples at Sulthan Bahery and Panamaram and Valliyoorkav at Mananthavady historically date back from 12th to 16th centuries and the temples show that Wayanad was a habitat of mankind and place of civilization even in very old times. Thirunelly Temple

It is known as 'Thekkan Kasi', of Kerala. It is believed, that a dip in the river Papanasini, running crystal clear down hill, wipes one off all sins. Thirunelly is 30 kms. north-east of Manathavady.

Valliyoorkav Temple
It is 3 kms. east of Mananthavady. The 10 day festival during the month of March-April is very famous.

Puliyar Mala Jain Temple

It is 5 kms noth of Kalpetta. This temple is devoted for Anantha natha Swami, one of the saints of Jaina faith.

Pallikunnu Church
It is 12 kms. north of Kalpetta. The famous festival is in the month of January.

Varambetta Mosque
It is the oldest mosque in Wayanad (300 years old), situated 15 kms. south-east of Kalpetta, near Padinjarathara.

Historical Tourism in Wayanad

Edakkal Caves
The Edakkal Caves are at Ambukutty Mala. It is a pre-historic rock shelter formed naturally out of a strange disposition of three huge boulders making one to rest on the other two with its bottom jutting out in between and serving as the roof. Edakkal literally means a stone in between.

The discovery of the cave and its identification as a prehistoric site were quite accidental by F. Fawcett, the then superintendent of police. An enthusiast in pre-history, Fawcett went around exploring the Wayanad high ranges which eventually led to the discovery of the Edakkal rock-shelter in 1894. He identified the site as a habitat of neolithic people on the basis of the nature of representations on the cave walls, which appeared to him as engravings made of neolithics celts..

Edakkal rock engravings stand out distinct among the magnitude of prehistoric visual archives of paintings and graphic signs all over the world. It is the world's richest pictographic gallery of its kind.

Pazhassi Memorial
The body of Veera Pazhassi, the Lion of Kerala who organised a guerilla war against the British East Indian Company is buried at Mananthavady, which is 32 km north east of Kalpetta.

About Wayanad

Wayanad, the green paradise is nestled among the mountains of the Western Ghats, forming the border world of the greener part of Kerala. Clean and pristine, enchanting and hypnotizing, this land is filled with history and culture. Located at a distance of 76 km. from the sea shores of Kozhikode, this verdant hill station is full of plantations, forests and wildlife. Wayanad hills are contiguous to Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu and Bandhipur in Karnataka, thus forming a vast land mass for the wild life to move about in their most natural abode.

Regarding geographical location, Wayanad district stands on the southern top of the Deccan plateau and its chief glory is the majestic Western Ghats with lofty ridges and rugged terrain interspersed with dense forest, tangled jungles and deep valleys. The place also enjoys a strategic location as the leading tourist centres of South India like Ooty, Mysore, Bangalore, Coorg and Kannur are situated around this region.

Covering an area of 2132 km ², with a density of population at 369 people/km² within a population of 780,619 people (2001 census), Wayanad consists of 3 taluks - Mananthavady, Sulthan Bathery and Vythiri. The district headquarters is located at Kalpetta municipality with a population of 29,602 as per 2001 census.

Wayanad enjoys a salubrious climate throughout the year. The mean average rain fall in this district is 2322 m.m. Lakkidi, Vythiri and Meppadi are the high rainfall areas in Wayanad. Annual rain fall in these high rain fall areas ranges from 3,000 to 4,000m.m. High velocity winds are common during the south west monsoon and dry winds blow in March-April. High altitude regions experience severe cold. At Ambalavayal in Wayanad, the mean maximum and minimum temperature for the last five years were 29oC and 18oC respectively. This place experiences a high relative humidity which goes even up to 95 percent during the south west monsoon period. Generally, the year is classifed into four seasons, namely, cold weather (December-February), hot weather (March-May), south west monsoon (June-September) and north east monsoon(October-November). The dale Lakkidi, nestled among the hills of Vythiri taluk, has the highest average rainfall in Kerala.

The misty environs of Wayanad offer a wide range of trekking opportunities, plantation visits and wildlife tours.

It was at Mananthavady (35km N) that Lord Arthur Wellesley fought a guerilla war with the Pazhassi Raja and British supremacy marked the region for two centuries. When the state of Kerala was created in 1956; the southern region of Wayanad which was part of Cannannoor district was attached to Calicut district. In 1980 the Wayanad region was amalgamated out of the districts of Kannur and Kozhikode and comprised the three taluks of Mananthavady, Sultan Bathery and Vythiry.

Kalpetta, the region's district headquarters (15 km N), used to be a major Jain centre. Lakkidi, its gateway town, is popular for its plantation homestays. Tipu Sultan, the legendary ruler of Mysore who valiantly opposed the British, built a fort at Sultan Bathery 10 km away, in the 18th century.

Established in 1973, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is contiguous to the protected area network of Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka on the north-east and Mudimalai of Tamil Nadu on the south-east. Rich in bio-diversity, the sanctuary is an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Which has been established with the specific objective of conservating the biological heritage of the region. Consisting entirely of notified reserve, the sanctuary is very rich in fauna and flora. The management of the sanctuary lays emphasis on scientific conservation with due consideration to the general lifestyle of the tribals and others who live on the fringes of the forest .

By Air

Kozhikode airport is located at a distance of about 25 km from the centre of the city. Kozhikode is well connected by air to Mumbai, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Goa, Madurai and Chennai.

By Rail

The Kozhikode railway station is located south of the Manachira Square. The city is well connected by train to important places like Mangalore, Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Coimbatore, Goa and Mumbai.

History of Wayanad

Wayanad, One of the fourteen districts in Kerala (India) is situated in an elevatedpicturesque mountainous plateau in Western Ghats. It lies between north latitude 11degree 26’28’’ and 11degree 48’22’’ and east longitude 75 degree 46’38’’ and 76 degree 26’11’’.

There is a land not far from Calicut, the city of Zamorins, yet a world apart from Kerala'sagricultural and industrial epicentres. It is a quiet place where scenic beauty wild life andtraditional matter, simplicity is a virtue and beauty still blossoms from the mountainous horizon and from the green glaze of alluring vegetation. This is Wayanad - the green paradise - the border world of greener part of Kerala. The name Wayanad has been derived from the expression 'Vayal nadu' - the village of paddy fields.
In the ancient times this land was ruled by the Rajas of the Veda tribe. In later times, Wayanad came under the rule of Pazhassi Rajas of Kottayam royal dynasty. When Hyder Ali became the ruler of Mysore, he invaded Wayanad and brought it under his way. In the days of Tipu, Wayanad was restored to the Kottayam royal dynasty. But Tipu handled entire Malabar to the British after the Sreerandapattam truce that he made with them. This was followed by fierce encounters between the British and Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja of Kottayam. Even when the Rajah was driven to the wilderness of Wayanad he waged several battles with his Nair and Kurichia-Kuruma tribal soliders against the British troops and defeated the latter several times through guerilla type encounters. The British could get only the dead body of the Rajah who killed himself somewhere in the interior forest. Thus Wayanad fell into the hands of British, and with it began a new turn in the history of this area. The Britishers opened up the Plateau for cultivation of tea and other cash crops. Roads were laid across the dangerous slopes of Wayanad from Calicut and Telicherry. These roads were extended to the city of Mysore and to Ooty through Gudalur. Roads facilities provided opportunities for the people of outside Wayanad to flow and settle to these jungle regions.

When the state of Kerala was formed in 1956, Wayanad was part of Kannur district. Later South Wayanad was added to Kozhikode district and then on November 1, 1980 North and South Wayanad joined together to form the present Wayanad district.

This mountain district is in many ways the most picturesque in the state, with its rolling hills covered with tropical rainforest. Wayanad also contributes richly to its fortunes, thanks to the flourishing cultivation of many spices, as well as Tea, Coffee and Cocoa. Wayanad is situated at a height of 700 to 2100m above sea level and is home to many species of animal and plant life. Temperatures range from 12 to 25 degrees centigrade. This district also has the added advantage of linking Kerala with the golden triangle of South India : Bangalore, Mysore and Ooty.
This high altitude district is characterised by the cultivation of perennial plantation crops and spices. The major plantation crops include coffee, tea, pepper, cardamom and rubber. Coffee based farming system is a notable feature of Wayanad. Coffee is grown both as pure crop and as mixed crop along with pepper. Pepper is grown largely along with coffee in the north eastern parts of the district, especially in Pulpally and Mullankolly areas. Coffee in Wayanad (66,999 ha.) shares 33.65 per cent of the total cropped area in the district and 78 per cent of the coffee area in the state. Other major crops are rubber(63,015 ha.), coconut(59,452 ha.), cardamom (38,348 ha.), tea (31,792 ha.) cassava and ginger. A recent increase in the area under coconut cultivation is noticed in the lower elevations. Paddy is cultivated in 22,772 hectares of land. The rice fields of Wayanad are in the valleys formed by hillocks and in majority of paddy lands, only a single crop is harvested. Ginger cultivation in Wayanad has also substantially increased in recent times and the ginger produced is mainly marketed in the form of green ginger. Homestead farming assumes importance in this district. The average size of holdings are 0.68 ha. A variety of crops including annuals and perennials are grown in these small holdings. The crops include coconut, arecanut, pepper, vegetables, tuber crops, drumstick, papaya, etc. and fruit trees like mango and jack. The crop patterns/crop combinations prevelant in this district are not based on any scientific norms. Therefore scientific cropping patterns suitable for the agro-ecological situation is to be recommended.

THE POPULATION OF THE DISTRICT: Accoring to 1991 census, is 6,72,128 of which male population is 3,41,958 and female 3,30,170. The density of population is 316.2 per sq. kilometres. The population of scheduled tribes is 1,14,969 and that of scheduled caste is 27,835. Strictly speaking, there is no urban population in Wayanad. However, life in Sulthan Bathery, Mananthavady and Kalpetta is in the process of gaining urban status. The decadal growth rate in the population of Wayanad was 59.17 per cent in 1941-51, 62.60 per cent in 1951-61, 50.35 per cent in 1961-71 and 33.71 per cent in 1971-81. In the first three decades of this century, the growth of population in Wayanad was less than ten per cent. This shows that there was an influx of settlers to Wayanad after the Second World War. The economic slump, difficulties and miseries creeping as a result of war into the life of common people, compelled them to seek 'pastures anew' on the virgin soil of Wayanad from all parts of Kerala and Karnataka. In the first year of settlement, thousands succumbed to malaria and the attack of wild animals. Those who survived these and the cold conditions, cleared the forests and transfomed Wayanad into a paradise of prosperity. Total number of workers in the district is 2,27,453. Out of them 53,773 are females. There are 40,729 cultivators of which the male numbers 36,063 and females 4,666. Total number of labourers are 74,813 of which 26,907 are females.
Marketing of Agriculture Produce
The marketing of coffee was fully regulated by the Coffee Board till 1992 and the entire coffee grown in the district had to be pooled to the Board.But in the Coffee Policy of 1995 - 96 , the Government exempted small scale growers possessing land less than 10 hectares from the obligation of pooling.Those growers with more than 10 hectares of coffee plantation were obliged to provide 60 percent of their produces to the Coffee Board.But Government of India recently announced the abolition of the pooling system for coffee altogether from 14th September 1996 and coffee growers are now free to market either in the domestic market or export.

Pepper is marketed mainly as dired berries. The different agencies engaged in the marketing of the produce are hill produce merchants , marketing socities, commission agents and exporters.Being an export oriented commodity, pepper prices show frequent fluctuations depending on the international prices prevailing for the commodity from timt to time.Ginger is mainly marketed as green ginger.Cardamom is sold at auction centres.The traders are licensed by the Spices Board and they participate in the different marketing centers for auction.Rubber is a controled commodityand is mainly marketed in the form of smoked rubber sheets.A large number of private dealers as well as the primary rubber marketing societies under the Rubber Marketing Federation , operate at the village level for the purchase and sale of commodity.
