Many of my new website clients ask if they should be getting listed on social media sites. They want to know which ones make sense for them, and how often and what content they should they be posting.

The short answer is it depends. Each industry is different and depending on the target population you are targeting, and the efficacy of each social media site must be looked at for each site you might want to use.

Social Media Sites Must Be Maintained

Once you establish your business profile (this is separate from your individual profile), you must create a plan for adding content. The last thing you want to do is to just set up a profile and ignore it because just like you might open a store or set up a phone line you must have someone staffing it and give people a reason to engage with you. Although there are systems for automation, putting in the time to cultivate your social media user base has many benefits as you can see in the next section which reviews some of the benefits of social media.

Benefits Of Using Social Media Include:

Increased brand awareness

Improved brand loyalty

Real-time opportunity to monitor conversations about your brand

Enables higher website traffic

Better search engine ranking

Enables more specific targeting of client population

Higher conversion rates

Provide better customer satisfaction

Higher brand authority

It is a cost-effective way to get leads

Opportunity to get a better read on client needs

Great way to reach people at various stages of the buying cycle

Social Media For Branding And Generating Leads

There is much research to substantiate that the benefits of using social media outweigh any time or monetary investment. As you do when evaluating your marketing spend and time commitment-you have to be strategic about how you will use social media for business. What you post on the sites can vary from Blog article links to Videos but a place which takes into account your sales cycle must be considered.

Not Sure If Social Media Is Right For You-Don’t Waste Your Time

This is not something we recommend you do yourself, at least not without some discussion of strategy, and help with setup, training, and site optimization. You don’t have to be on every social media site. And you don’t have to spend all your time on the sites you choose to use. That’s where we come in. Our experience with social media can help you determine the best mix of sites and content that will be effective throughout the sales funnel.

Here’s How To Find Out

In May of last year, I wrote an article entitled “What is Responsive Web Design and Why It’s Important.” The article discussed Google’s announcement, back then, /what-is-responsive-web-design-and-why-its-important/that it had a preference for a new technology called “Responsive design.” Well, now Google is using this preference in it’s new algorithm update rollout on April 21st.

So, if your website is not built with the latest responsive design technology- it can hurt your business by either not enabling it to show up in an online search, or not displaying well on the device used to search. And if a website does not display well, according to research done by Google, “if a user lands on your mobile website and is frustrated or doesn’t see what they are looking for, there’s a 61% chance they will leave immediately and go to another website (most likely a competitor).” Google also reports that if the website visitor has “a positive experience with your mobile website, a user is 67% more likely to buy a product or use a service.”

That said, have you checked what your website looks like on a mobile device such as a phone or a tablet?

What is Responsive Web Design?

Optimal Viewing Experience

Responsive web design (RWD) is an approach to web design aimed at building websites to provide an optimal viewing experience for the website visitor. A Responsively built website makes it easy for the site visitor to read and navigate the website. Responsive websites can be read easily across a wide range of devices with a minimum of resizing, zooming, and scrolling. They can be read easily on all devices, from mobile phones to desktop computers because they adjust to the size and type of device or screen size.

Because more and more people are using mobile devices to conduct searches for goods or service online it makes sense to make sure they have the best viewing experience possible and responsive mobile-friendly web design is now essential to the growth of any business with a website.

Responsive Sites Are Rewarded With Higher Ranking

Given this reality, Google is now rewarding sites that are mobile-friendly by giving them higher ranking in the search results. In a recent announcement on April 21st when they rolled out their new ranking algorithm, Google stated “We’re boosting the ranking of mobile-friendly pages on mobile search results. Now searchers can more easily find high-quality and relevant results where text is readable without tapping or zooming, tap targets are spaced appropriately, and the page avoids unplayable content or horizontal scrolling.”

Sites To Check Your Website Mobile Friendliness

For Mobile Phones

Here are a few sites where you can check how your website displays on different devices and screen sizes:

For Mobile Phones

http://www.mobilephoneemulator.com/

For Tablets and Phones

For anyone to be successful in owning or running a business they must have a marketing plan with specific goals, actions steps and timelines. Having a marketing plan coach can help business owners focus on their business by taking a step back from their business.

A Marketing plan must be multi-faceted using a variety of channels such as your website, blogs, email marketing, social media, internet directories, video, advertising, and yes, traditional or print media, which can still be useful in this digital age.

Search engine optimization (SEO), the process of using various strategies to show up on the first page of a Google or other search engine search, is essential for the success of your marketing plan, especially if you are looking for local website traffic.

For some businesses, buying ad space on various social networks and/or search engine result pages can bring you traffic, and a good ROI, in a short period of time, if done correctly.

More marketing plan tips can be found in an article I wrote back in 2009 entitled “6 Tips for Creating a Successful Marketing Plan” found here: http://www.communitymarketing.typepad.com/my_weblog/2009/10/6-tips-for-creating-a-successful-marketing-plan.html

Although written in 2009-these tips are still relevant today.

Social Media Automation Tools

When I ask my clients if they are using social media their first reaction is to complain to me that they don’t have time to keep up with all of their social media sites. Apparently, they are unaware that there are automation tools out there that can help them save time, be more responsive, and productive.

One such tool, http://SocialOomph.com/ provides social media users with productivity tools for Twitter, StatusNet, and Facebook. Facebook users can schedule status updates that can be published at any future dates and times.

Social Oomph has both free and paid versions. Formerly known as Tweet Later, it allowed users to schedule Twitter posts. Social Oomph has more features and serves as a hub for a number of social media accounts. It also allows you to automate the process of following and messaging. And for those who want to track mentions of your keywords on Twitter- it will send you email notifications so you can get some timely information.

Many people find that the free services has the features they need such as:

Automatically following, unfollowing and can send a message to new followers

Social oomph allows you to automatically follow those who follow you, unfollow those who unfollow you, and send out thank you messages.

Get information on your @ mentions/replies and retweets

You can you receive a daily email, usually sent within 12 hours of all your @replies and see who has reposted your content and find out all you mentions/replies on Twitter.

Schedule your tweets

You can schedule your posts and also search your previous tweets to find information to retweet.

Receive keyword alerts

You can set up to receive email alerts for up to 50 keyword terms sent via email 1-2 times per day.

Tracks your posted links—Built in URL shortening and analytics tool that links to a Bit.ly account via API, and can provide stats on activity

Set up multiple welcome messages You can set up a few different messages for new followers.

Approval/Vetting– You have the option of manually approving a prospective follower

More detailed Twitter profile listing inside of Social Oomph. You can create a more detailed Twitter profile so people can more easily find and follow you.

It should be noted that Twitter tools has many of these useful features as well.

If you upgrade to the professional version of Social Oomph for about either $14 or $36 depending on the features you need, you can define your own channels, submit social updates via email, schedule & publish blog posts and pages, multiple twitter follow back and DM features, manage dms with automatic spam control, manage unlimited social accounts with tweetcockpit, schedule @replies and direct messages.

Some criticism of Social Oomph is that the layout is not the most user-friendly or easy to navigate as say some alternatives like Hootsuite. Hootsuite will help manage your Facebook, LinkedIn and ping.fm accounts and also has its own iPhone app. Many people use both applications as there are advantages and disadvantages of each-so you may want to explore Hootsuite as well.

The bottom line is that if you are serious about having an ongoing social media presence to help brand and grow your business then you need to use these productivity tools to help you save time and improve communication with others online. Contact us to help you get set up at 781-325-8186.

Do you use Social Oomph or Hootsuite?

What works for you?

How To Export Linkedin Contacts or Connections

Not many people are aware that Linkedin has one of the best business databases available. They are also not aware that you can export the names and email addresses of everyone with whom you are connected on Linkedin. In my experience if someone took the time to connect with you on Linkedin they realize the value of relationships and are more likely than a cold-call to be a receptive audience for your product or service offering.

Here’s A Step-By-Step On How to Export Linkedin Contacts or Connections

You can export a .CSV file of your connections from the Contact Settings page. Note: Only the full name, email address, current employer, and position are exported.

To Export Your Contacts or Connections List:

1. Move your cursor over Connections at the top of your homepage and select Keep in Touch.

2. In the Connections Header area to the right you will see two icons. Click the Right, star-like Settings icon to reach the Contact Settings page.

3. Under Advanced Settings on the right, click Export LinkedIn Connections.

4. Choose the format of the file you want to download and enter the security verification text if prompted and then click Continue.

5. Click Export.

6. Save the file somewhere you can easily find it, maybe to a folder named Linkedin Connections file.

I was amazed when I downloaded my list, that I had almost 4,000 names and email addresses on the list.

Now Segment Your List

Now that you have your list-why don’t you start by asking them if they would be interested in opting in to your newsletter, or blog article feed. The goal is begin to cultivate this list so that you can begin to segment it based on their needs and interest in your services.

Good luck exporting your list, and let me know if I can help in any way.

Why Are Research Or Shopping Keywords Different from Buying Keywords?

Different keywords and keyword phrases are used by internet searchers for different reasons. Think about what keywords you use when you are doing research. When one of my business coaching clients suspected he had ADHD due to problems with time management at work- he did some research using the keywords ‘ADHD’ and ‘symptoms of ADHD’ and ‘ADHD and problems at work’ online. But when he was looking for a coach he searched for ‘coach for ADHD,’ and Boston Business Coach for ADHD,’ and he found my website.

Why Keyword Selection In Google Ranking Is Important

Searching using different keywords produces different results and reaches different target markets. If you decide to optimize your website keywords for more general terms- then you may get more hit/clicks to your website, especially if those keywords are not very competitive. But, more clicks is not always better because if people are directed by Google to your website and do not find what they are looking for, they immediately leave your website. Google calls that a “bounce,” and Google will penalize site your site if it has a high bounce rate. Once it does so, you will have less of a chance that it will display your website when people search using those same keywords. So it is important that you choose the keywords you want to rank for wisely and optimize each page for only one set of keywords.

Do Keyword Research Before Writing Content for Your Website or Blog

When we write webpages and a blog or e-newsletter article for clients to help them rank better on search engines- we do keyword research using some keyword search tools that help us understand search volume, the frequency at which people are searching for specific keywords, as well as the competition for those keywords.

Effective SEO Campaigns

To be effective in our search engine optimization(SEO) efforts, we typically use a combination of broad terms and refined phrases to access researchers(shoppers) and those ready to purchase services (buyers).

We recommend having content on your website or blog that gives prospective clients specific information on what they are searching, as well as a lead generation tool such as an e-newsletter sign up or RSS feed, for those that want to subscribe, get to know you better, and see what services you offer. It helps it you integrate your social presence with your website so people can receive information from whatever information source they most frequently use. Google likes when you ‘engage’ with others online and factors in the number of comments on your blog for example in determining your rankings. We also recommend a call to action phone number, or contact us email link to gather information so they can get in touch with you right away.

Balancing Relevancy and Keyword Search Volume

Just to summarize, Google and other search engines rank you on how relevant your website is to the searcher’s keyword search online. By using the proper keywords and providing specific keyword-related information on your site-you make your content more relevant to their keyword search. By using many marketing channels to broadcast your content- you are giving people the information they want, when they want it, and where they can easily find it. This, in turn, will minimize you having to deal with those who are shopping around, and will get you more traffic to your website and more clients who are your ideal clients.

New Google Algorithm Update!

Google sometimes makes changes to the formula(their algorithm) it uses to rank how websites show up in a search for certain keywords or phrases. It is important for us marketers to keep track of these changes so we can do what Google likes in order to rank high in a search and to make the search experience for the searcher more relevant.

According to Search Engine Land (SEL), an organization that provides SEO information to nerds like me, and others -wrote that on July 24, Google made changes to its local ranking algorithm. This new ranking algorithm was dubbed “Pigeon” by Search Engine Land (SEL) in absence of an official name by Google.

New Algorithm Brings Improved Local Search Results

The new algorithm has been implemented for United States English results and attempts to provide a more useful and relevant experience for searchers seeking local results. As a user of Google search, you can appreciate it if you search using keywords “Target Retail store” for example that you get a Target store near you and not a search result of a Target store in another state, or not a listing of stores that sell archery targets.

These changes will be visible in both the Google Maps search results and Google Web search results. Some local businesses may notice an increase or decrease in web site referrals, leads and business from the change.

In addition, Google said that this new algorithm improves their distance and location ranking parameters. Local directory sites are getting better visibility in Google’s search results.

xGoogle said, this update ties local results more closely to standard web ranking signals. That should benefit big directory sites like Yelp and TripAdvisor — sites that have stronger SEO signals than small, individual restaurants and hotels are likely to have. For those businesses and websites, local search has just gotten a lot more difficult.

What Does This Mean for Local Businesses?

Local businesses should make sure they have an optimized and verified Google Local Business and Maps listing. I also recommend they set up a company business page on Google plus, and make sure they have completed business profiles on Internet Directory sites like Yelp, Merchant Circle, as well as relevant social media sites such as Linkedin and Facebook.

Responsive Web Design: New Technology For Websites

Increasingly, people are searching the internet using their smartphones and tablets instead of their computers. As you know from your own experience; viewing a website or blog article from a smartphone or tablet can be a frustrating experience. The reason this is the case is because these websites were created with technology that was made to work with commonly used home computer screen sizes. As a result, oftentimes, to view a website on a smartphone one needs to scroll up or down, and zoom in just to read text and see pictures on websites not built for these devices.

Mobile Websites Met the Need

To deal with this issue, web developers and designers have created mobile versions of their client’s websites which are much better at adapting to various devices and screen sizes like the iPad and Android tablets, Samsung, Nexus, and iPhone. However, there are a number of disadvantages of using mobile versions of websites, most notably the fact that they do not rank as well in a Google search.

Google Announces Responsive Web Design Preference

In February 2104, I read an article in which Google announced that it has a preference for a new technology called “Responsive design.” With Google’s recent algorithm changes there have been changes in how they rank websites. Their new ranking algorithm takes into account the following factors that are key elements of the functionality inherent in responsive design. According to Google, they are as follows:

Rather than using multiple URL’s (www.yourwebsite.com ), responsive design allows you to use a single URL for a piece of content to makes it easier for your users to interact with, share, and link to your content. It also helps Google index your content

With responsive design, redirecting to another URL (Such as a mobile site) is not needed for users to get to the device-optimized view. This makes your website load faster and reduces errors (both ranking factors)

Responsive design websites save resources for both your site and Google’s crawlers. For responsive web design pages, Google needs only to crawl your pages once. This crawling efficiency helps Google index more of the site’s contents and keep it fresh

You Must Be On The First Page

Additionally, for a business to get leads from their website they must be on the first page of a search, as research indicates that over 95% of people do not search beyond the first page. When building new websites, all website owners need to know that new websites need to be able to adjust to different sized devices, browsers, and screen sizes in order to be optimized and rank well on a search engine search.

User Experience is Key

As we know from our own experiences searching for content on the web with our tablets or smartphones, we want to quickly and easily get the information we need and be able to view pictures and text with no problems. So you can see why it is worth the investment to make your website visitors experience a quick and easy one by creating a new responsive website, or updating your existing website to incorporate the new technology.

LinkedIn launched University Pages, the first step in an initiative to make LinkedIn an indispensable resource for students. To date, over 1,500 University Pages have been created in more than 60 countries.

LinkedIn launched Sponsored Updates, its first mobile advertising product, to deliver relevant content to members from marketers in the LinkedIn desktop and mobile feed.

What New for Linkedin?

In October, LinkedIn launched several new mobile products, including a re-imagined iPad app; Intro for iPhone, transforming the mobile email experience; a new Pulse app to deliver relevant news and insights with LinkedIn integration; and Recruiter Mobile for customers of the flagship Talent Solutions Recruiter product.

The Best App to Find Lost or Misplaced Objects : The Tile App

With the busy lives that many of us lead- we are bound to misplace, forget the location of, or lose items of importance to us like our keys, wallets, TV remote, purses, laptops, bikes, cars, etc.

Until recently, there has never been a device that is accurate and affordable which can help you to locate missing objects, resulting in many stressful, time consuming, embarrassing and expensive situations. There also hasn’t been a product of this type that allows you to track multiple objects with multiple tiles, all from an App on one device.

A newly developed App, called the Tile App, was created by Nick Evans and fellow creator, Mike Farley, who started the company in November 2012.

The Tile Device

The actual “Tile” device, is a waterproof, stamp-size adhesive square that helps to locate lost items that it is attached to via a double sided adhesive, via a key chain, or simply drop the Tile inside an item.

Ways to Use the Tile App

Some ways to use Tile and objects to be found include:

Attaching Tile to key chains

Placing Tile in purses, wallets

Attaching Tile to phones, remote controls, laptops, bikes

Placing Tiles in cars or books

How to Find an Object Using Tile

Once the item is lost, misplaced or stolen, you then use the free Tile iPhone App to pinpoint the location of the Tile and the lost item. The Tile app remembers where it last saw your Tile, so you can easily find it right where you left it.

If for some reason the item is out of range or not visible with the App, users can activate an audible alarm on the Tile to help find it; similar to calling your own phone when you misplaced it, but your Tile is on all the time and battery life wont be an issue.

The Power of Community in Locating Missing Stolen Items

If one of your tiled items is lost or stolen, you can mark it as a stolen item in the App, and if any other tile user happens to be in the vicinity of the item, that particular tile will communicate the position of your tile (item) to you discreetly. This video shows how it works. No one will know where your tile is but you. It was designed with privacy in mind so you won’t even know whose tile sent you the signal, nor will the tile’s owner know anything about the location of your lost item. Obviously, the strength of this feature will depend on the number of users who may be in the vicinity of your lost item.

What is the Technology That Makes It Work?

The Tile device uses the low-energy bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology as a mini-GPS to locate lost items. The range of the device is up to 150 feet.

Tile Presently Is Compatible Only With Apple Products

For now, the Tile app is only available for Apple products and is compatible with Bluetooth 4.0. Therefore, it only works with Apple devices such as the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad Mini, iPad 3rd and 4th gen, and iPod Touch 5th gen.

The company reports that once more Android phones become compatible with Bluetooth 4.0, Tile will release an Android app as well.

Cost/ How to Order the Tile App

Tiles range in price from 1 tile for $18.95, to 9 Tiles (+ 3 Bonus Tiles) for $170.55, and are now on preorder. But when the product launches in Winter of 2013, it will retail for $25 each. The device has a battery life of one year, after such time users must purchase a new Tile. The company says that when it’s time for a new device, you simply mail your old one back to be recycled, so that users will continue to get the latest versions of the product and not have to continually replace the expensive custom coin cell battery.
