Top Ten Search Engine Optimization Mistakes

I am speaking tonight at a Facebook get-togethor here in Salt Lake about SEO and Internet

Marketing. Below is my list of the top ten SEO mistake I see my clients make every day. It is

a small group so I may get into some other marketing tips as well. May even do a hotseat if anyone

is interested.

1) Creating a slick Flash based site or using frames to build your website.

2) Not identifying your ideal target market.

3) Choosing keywords simply based on the amount of traffic instead of how well they are related to your site/product and how much competition exists

a. http://www.SEOBook.com has a keyword research tool for free

b. http://freekeywords.WordTracker.com/gtrends is another alternative.

4) Not using your keywords in the title of each page of the site and not creating a unique title for every page of your site.

5) Not using your keywords when naming each of the pages of your website.

a. Art1.html, Art2.html

b. Contemporary-Art-Gallery.html, Wildlife-Art-Gallery.html

6) Choosing an inappropriate domain name

a. Use your keywords in the domain name

b. Eg. Weight Loss Supplements

i. 1.3 million pages in Google

ii. Estimated 377 – 471 clicks in Google Adwords

iii. Deleted Domain - WeightLossAndDietSupplements.com

c. Use DomainTools.com to search for deleted domains that have a history

7) Not monitoring the results of your SEO efforts

a. SEO is an evolutionary process

b. Look not only at what keywords are giving you traffic but keywords that are converting to sales/signups

c. Use Google Analytics to track your statistics for Free

Not having enough content

a. Each of the pages of your site should contain at least 500 words

b. Even if you contract someone to do SEO for you, realize you will need to create the content for them.

9) Not using a blog

a. A blog creates frequently updated content for your site, and provides an RSS feed notifying the search engines when content is added.

b. Social Bookmarking should also be used to create backlinks to your site/blog

i. Del.icio.us, Digg, StumbleUpon are the major sites

10) Broken links to pages that no longer exist

a. Broken links cause the search engine spider that indexes your site to stop looking at your site and move on

b. Important pages could be getting missed or the site could be de-indexed

I started a new show tonight I am planning to broadcast each week up on UStream.tv. Tonight was a short test getting the video settings correct, but on the third take I went through a few articles from RSS feeds I am following using Google Reader.

Getting back into moblogging

I was talking to friend Robby Leblanc tonight about different projects we had going on and my on going love affair with home improvement on our house in Murray, and the topic of my efforts up on facebook came up.

This led to the topic that facebook was just too time intensive. Well, I told it doesn’t have to be. This post is being created on my blackberry and then posted on my blog through Utterz.com.

After it is posted on my blog, it then automatically goes to my twitter account and then from there to my facebook timeline through the twitter app up on facebook.

Of course this is oversimplifying it a little bit but once it is set up it is really easy. This is part of the techniques I share in my upcoming course niche traffic blueprint.

Facebook can also be a great place to keep your finger on the pulse of internet marketing.

How are you celebrating Earth Day today?

Laura and I have spent the last couple hours watching HGTV on our DVR, with some of the great episodes of our favorite show from today. Today all of the shows were focused on Eco-Friendly design and products that focus on the three Rs; Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

We are really happy our community here is active in recycling. Today also marks the day that Wild Oats/Whole Foods is eliminating plastic bags from their stores. Hopefully today you are taking some time to reflect on how you are effecting the environment around you as well as the bigger picture of the world.

Today I was wandering around Costco during lunch and noting the introduction of more and more organic products. I am excited about the mainstream adoption of organics, which should have an impact on price. I have already seen a reduction of price in several products we use each week.

Have a great night, and cherish what you have, because the world is changing quickly.

My Blog Is Partially Restored

As many of you know, my blog went down this weekend. We had problems on one of our dedicated servers caused by a hacker. The core files on the server were replaced so when I rebooted the server, all indications were showing the server was down, but in the background it was controlled by the hacker sending out a flood of emails through our server.

The only way our support group could get in was through recovery disks and shell within the data center itself, not pretty.

The good news is it was a server we were looking at decomissioning, the bad news it had my blog and our Forex site, Lots-Of-Pips.com on it.

Going through my files, I was able to find a backup from January 26th I created prior to updating Wordpress. you would think by now I would have learned my lesson and be creating more regular backups. Trying to restore my blog this time was much more painfull because of the amount of blogging I have been doing. While the backup restored the posts and comments to january 26th, I have been going through Google cache/search this morning copy and pasting posts from January 26th to present. I just finished and it amounted to a 81 page Word document.

Over the next couple weeks I will be restoring those lost posts back into the blog, hopefully before they drop out of the serps.

I opened my blog back up to Entrecard Ads today. Since it was down for a few days, my ad price was all the way down to 2 credits. It will take a few days to ramp it back up, so now is a good time to jump on my widget at a low price. Last I checked, about 5 other entrecarders jumped on within the first 30 minutes I was back online.

How To Use Stumbleupon To Get More Traffic To Your Blog

One of the other top traffic sources to my blog this month was Stumbleupon.com, thanks to one of our visitors stumbling the training video from Terry Dean about Blog Carnivals. Within two hours, I had over 300 unique visitors to the blog through Stumbleupon.

Today’s video walks you through how to use Stumbleupon yourself and get more traffic to your blog or website. I found it gives you a good basic understanding of what Stumbleupon is and how to use it.

Getting More Traffic To Your Blog With Trackbacks

In tonight’s video, Jack Humphrey shares with us his methods for getting more traffic to your blog using trackbacks. Basically, a trackback show up as a comment on another blog, by linking to their blog post within yours. I have been using this method this month with great success, getting links on some high traffic blogs and some of my top referrals are coming from this method.

Jack walks us through how to find blogs in our niche to comment on through Google, and then how to use trackbacks within wordpress.

The Ultimate Aero, Is It Worth It?

How much should the fastest car be worth?

If money was no object, would you spend $600,000 on the current fastest car in the world?

The big question is when would you actually want to go over 250 miles per hour. At $600,000, the car is actually a steal compared to it’s Bugatti counterpart which retails at $1.6 million. Personally, I feel it is a waste of money. Imagine the lives you could impact around the world with that amount of money instead of having the bragging rights of having the fastest car parked in your luxury garage, or cruising down sunset strip on the way to the club.
