Ben Benner’s Better Bread.

Going through my bread pics, I am noticing that many of my pics are from after I have toasted the bread in the morning while at the office.

What can I say, toast is the best way to enjoy some breads, not all, but I would go so far as to say most breads.

This was an early rendition of my Sans Raisin bread.

My boss and friend, Mr. Benner, brings bread into work like every friggin’ day and it is amazing. I know he’s getting us all addicted to the good stuff, then he’ll start charging, like any good entrepreneur / drug dealer, but for now I’m getting a delicious daily fix. My favorite so far has been his extra sharp cheese bread.

BTW, Ben Benner’s Better Bread is the title I gave his bread, not his. He isn’t some crazy bread ego maniac as far as I know.

Pencil Printer.

This might just be the best product I have ever seen. It takes your old pencils, grinds them up, and prints with them. Oh, and since it’s pencil, you can erase whatever you print. I want to make digital drawings, then have them printed on paper with a pencil, just to create black holes in space and time. Thanks Dornob!

Nerd Alert. I’ve been writing HTML since I was 12, so I figured by now I had learned it all, but while cleaning up a website with W3C validator, my mind was blown by some old school

knowledge.

Lately, I’ve started making heavy use of

, , and to easily stylize any data tables I’m working with. I had always assumed to put a few blocks at the top, a few blocks at the bottom, and call it a day. NO! I was totally wrong and creating W3C errors out the butt.

Based on the rules (of at least XHTML 1.0 Transitional), you can only declare one

and one block. Both and must come before , so they can render before any data. The block will be appended to the end of the table (as expected) by the browser.

And just to finish up our

lesson, you can have as many blocks as you want, as long as they come after and .

If you read to the end of this, kudos. You are either a designer in some facet or you hate your life. Please don’t write me any manifestos.

Austin Is Now A No-Kill City.

Today, the Austin City Council unanimously passed the ‘no-kill’ plan for Austin’s animal shelters. The goal is to have, within two years, 90% of all animals leave the shelters alive. Built out of jQuery, gameQuery aims to make game development easier without the dependencies of Flash or executables. Features include multi-layer sprite animation, collision detection, and swappable sound, among others. It might be a while off, but browsers are getting better at rendering Javascript with each milestone. I had no trouble rendering any of the demos, and it was quite impressive.

BTW, if you are looking to develop similar games in Flash, I strongly recommend Flixel, the Actionscript gaming extension.

Underwater Skyscraper.

Water-Scraper is an interesting approach to population growth, given that our seas are slowly rising. It is a futuristic idea from eVolo’s 2010 skyscraper competition. Being a nerd and having seen every episode of SeaQuest and SeaLab 2021, I fully support this architecture design. It looks like a giant jelly fish and each scraper is self sustaining. Tumblr Revenue Stream.

I’d be really curious to see what this feature represents. I wonder if they are going to start charging $1 for additional blogs or incorporate a gift system like Facebook. As long as they aren’t taking away or attaching fees to existing features, I think it should be an interesting chapter in the Tumblr life span.

I’ve personally always been surprised they don’t integrate advertising into the dashboard. It seems like they could make a killing with ads scattered randomly through the feeds, highlighted in different colors to avoid anger from accidental clicks.
