Trying to follow a legacy

I think I've have ignored this blog for almost more than a year.

There so much that has happened, but nothing compares to losing my dear beloved father on the 5th of January. It went like this, I was in Cyberjaya office preparing to head home around 6+ when my brother called saying my dad has collapsed in the Ipoh Swimming Club gym. I was shocked by knowing how strong my father is, I'm still certain he will snap out of it. Nevertheless, I still quickly packed up my things and headed home as fast as possible to make the journey back to Ipoh.

During the journey, I was still trying to reassure myself, my dad will be fine. But somehow, a called from my mother to my brother changed all that. Suddenly I felt scared and I had this feeling coming over me which I couldn't explain. Once we left the Ipoh toll, my worse fears are finally confirmed. My dad has left us. Something that we wouldn't in a million years believe would happen so soon.

Once we reached home, we saw a sobbing grandmother and maid. We still tried to be strong. No long after that, my mother followed the van back with my dad's body. The sight of my motionless dad is really heart wrenching, you could literally feel your heart smashed into a million pieces. Throughout my dad's life, he has never been someone to stay still, you could always see him busy with something, so my father lying on a "bed" motionless is really a sight we never ever saw before.

Since we're doing a chinese funeral service for my dad, we (both sons) are required to help suit-up my dad for the final journey. That inital touch of our hands to his ice cold body is something that I will never forget.
No matter how strong we tried to be prior to this, that moment of feeling his ice cold body, instantly teared down whatever wall we tried to put up. Tears following non stop and heart wrenching.

The funeral service lasted for 2 days until 8th January 2012 (Sunday). Now my dad's final resting place is in Bercham's Kek Lok Seh temple.

Since my dad's passing, I'm been trying to retrace things that he has been doing everyday whether at home or at the office. Sitting in his office chair, I hope I will be able to continue his legacy that he has left behind. Everywhere in Ipoh I go, I never fail to remember things that we done together. I really miss him very much.

Baba, I hope you're in a better place right now, thank you for caring for us unconditionally for your whole life. It's time for your deserved rest i guess. You'll be forever remembered.

Seems like the locals here like to have their tea break at this kopitiam. So, what’s do most of the customers order?

The most fantastic cha siu pao I have ever had. Just simply fantastic.

Do remember to order the lemon tea when you’re here. It’s taste it just perfect. Till now I still can’t find anything that is close to it in Semenanjung Malaysia.

UMS Aquarium Museum

Took sometime to visit the UMS aquarium museum when we were looking around the UMS campus.

I think this is a crocodile’s skeleton.

Various corals that were on display.

This is the center piece of the whole aquarium. A huge oval shaped salt water aquarium.

Wan Wan Coffee Shop – Kota Kinabalu

This coffee shop is located at Bundusan area, nearby Damai Club and KDCA in Kota Kinabalu. They open daily from 6.30am till 2.30pm.

This coffee shop is famous for mince meat kon lou mee, fish noodle, fish fillet and fish cakes.

Look at the crowd on a weekday morning. Food must be fantastic right?

A snap of the price list. You can’t really anything remotely close to these kind of pricing in KL.

Tom yam mee hun soup.

Kon lou mee. The mee’s texture and meat slices is fantastic. Each bite feels heavenly.

Definately a must go place for breakfast if you happen to be in Kota Kinabalu.

Keningau Paus

What so special about paus in Keningau you might ask.

Well you have the typical cha siu pau, red bean pau… wait a minute.

Petai Pau? Mui Choy Pau? Peanut Pau? Pumpkin pau? Oh gawd, seldom you see these kind of paus being sold in peninsular Malaysia.

All the paus are handmade as indicated by the sign, and taste fantastic also.

And they are cheap also… 6 paus for something like RM6 if I remember correctly.

Sabah Day 1 – Kuo Man Restaurant

When we eventually arrived at Kota Kinabalu, it was already lunch time. So my wife’s 3rd uncle took us for lunch one of famous eateries in Kota Kinabalu – Kuo Man Restaurant.

This restaurant is famous for their homemade noodles and fish cutlets. Too bad fish cutlets were sold out when we were there. :(

This is the version of dry noodles. Taste like a mixture of wan tan mee & meehun.

A bowl of beef slices in soup.

Pork slices in soup. Pork in Sabah appears to taste better.

Sabah Trip – Day 1

Only slept at around 4.30am+ before boarding an AirAsia plane for Kota Kinabalu at 9.30. Contradictory to public perception, AirAsia planes are actually quite punctual. It left on the dot at 9.30 and reach Kota Kinabalu International airport at 12.50-1pm.

The LCCT seems to have more eateries compared to KLIA for some weird reason. MCD, Old Town Kopitiam, MarryBrown, Taste of Asia etc…

The check-in procedure for domestic flights also seem to be more lenient compared to international flights. They appear to encourage you to take more hand carry stuff above the plane rather than put it in cargo.

Sang Kee Restaurant

After watching Taste With Jason which features various tasty food outlets around Malaysia (mainly the peninsular so far), I decided to give this restaurant a try a week after the restaurant was featured on the show. Boy what a mistake that was:

This was the crowd at 7pm on a weekend

It even overflowed to the lane outside.

Ok. Decided to do the right thing and not wait.

Take 2. Went again during the Labor Day long holidays.

Crowd sort of died out a bit. But still as many people inside the restaurant. Had to wait almost an hour for food.

This is what we ordered.

“Wat dan yin yeong” which was recommended on the show. Well, it’s good and very worth a try.

“Kau choy stir fried with pork”

Sweet and sour pork. Very nice.

All the food and drinks came up to around RM35 for 2 pax, quite reasonable if you asked me. Well bit of advice, do not go to a place which was recommended by the show directly after the week it was aired, chances are there will be a huge crowd of people. Let the hype die out let say about 3 week – 1 month + then give a try.

Some shots i took during Earth Day Carnival at Ikano.

An electric bicycle that was on sale. As I recall it was selling for around 2K+

There was also a Megaman lighting stall there selling various lights.

Organic soaps that were on sale.

A farmers market that was located outside Ikano. There were various food stalls and stalls selling organic produce.

Hatyai Street

After reading a food blog about Hatyai Street in bangsar, I’ve decided to go give it a try.

Hatyai Street is located opposite TMC bangsar and beside Denise wine bar.

The condiments that are provided. (Thai chili sauce, green Thai chili sauce, curry powder? and hidden behind is the fish sauce.)

Stir fried chicken with basil leaves. (RM13)

Medium pig trotter dish (RM18) Nice..

Pad Thai.

Paku pakis with coconut milk.

Prices are quite reasonable considering the restaurant is located in bangsar. Worth having a try if you’re around the area. Oh ya, obviously the restaurant is non-halal.
