What makes it groundbreaking is that Tascam took their DR40 and DR100 recorders, and totally re-engineered them with the video world in mind.  It’s a market they’ve never really played in before (although many people use the two other recorders I’ve mentioned in audio for video setups, myself included) so this really is the company breaking new ground (for them) while offering a device that really does seem to meet most every need that DSLR Video shooters need.

As a side note, Zoom announced a new device after the show which although interesting in that it offers 4 lines of XLR/TS input, the form factor is awkward at best.  It’s a pretty big device (as is the DR60D) but the shape of it just isn’t as functional when it comes to mounting it and using it in a DSLR camera setup.  Expect to see other companies jumping on the *designed for use with DSLR applications* bandwagon in the near future.

Timelapse can add emotional impact to video productions when used correctly.  This short timelapse is a side project we are working on and isn’t the kind of material we would normally use.  We’ll be adding some commercial timelapse examples in the future.

Let me say this right up front…. I want one of these. Yes it’s heavier than most heads, and yes you need two hands to operate it (and therefore a second set of hands to pull focus and change focal length). But I still want one!
