Keystone State Boychoir Welcomes 10 New Members Of The Aleph Class

Philadelphia – The entering Aleph class was beaming with pride as they donned their coveted green Keystone State Boychoir jackets. These boys are the newest members of the Keystone State Boychoir, joining other boys from Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs. They received their jackets during the Keystone State Boychoir’s sold-out performance of Rejoice in The Lamb with renowned organist Wesley Parrott on May 19. The standing room only concert was performed at The First Presbyterian Church of Germantown, 35 W. Chelten Avenue, home of the historic McLean Memorial Organ. It is the largest church organ in Philadelphia.

The concert was part of an ongoing, worldwide celebration of the 100th birthday of Benjamin Britten, one of the 20th century’s greatest composers. The boys worked hard for sixteen weeks to earn their jackets and perform as bona fide members of KSB.

KSB is the only choir in the world to have toured all seven continents. In 2009, KSB made history as the first choir to perform in Antarctica. More recently, KSB sang at a ceremony in Oslo, Norway for Nobel Peace Prize-winner Aung San Suu Kyi and presented her with a Liberty Bell. Internationally, KSB has performed in the world’s major concert halls, including the Manaus Opera House in Brazil, the Petronas Philharmonik Hall in Malaysia, and the Hanoi Opera House in Vietnam, as well as in venues throughout Canada, Brazil, Chile, South Africa, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia, Monaco, France, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria and Norway.

On Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church in Germantown, KSB hosted the 2013 KSBoychoir Festival, a one-time festival for boy who like to sing. Hi All -
We are safe and sound at our New York home, Hosteling International, and wouldn't you know it, there's a Ben and Jerry's right around the corner! Once we checked in and had our hostel orientation, Fitz was ready for some ice cream, so we all had to accompany him!

The weather looks like it is going to be perfect for this trip, after last week's rain, so we will make the best of being outdoors in New York.

From Steve, Fitz and me, thank you all for sending your sons on this little adventure to Carnegie Hall. There are already new friendships forming, and seasoned KSB travelers taking the new guys under their wings, though it doesn't seem too long ago that a couple of the oldest guys were the "little boys" in this same hostel.

Tour magic happening already!

Good Morning!

If you are getting this, then the Hostel wifi is more cooperative this morning.

A little later start today, after a good old New York City hike yesterday. Best part of the day? Hands down, riding the subway from the Battery to Times Square, with the boys singing South African songs, Da Pacem Domine, even We are the Boys, all with some of the oldest trebles breaking in their new grad notes.

We took the boys to the 911 Memorial, also my first visit since the Memorial was opened, though I've been to Ground Zero with several groups of students and KSB boys. Interesting being there with a group of boys, the oldest of whom has only a vague memory of the day, and the youngest of whom weren't born yet. The boys were respectful and curious, but clearly experiencing something that is history.

Final rehearsal at the hostel is now underway for the Carnegie Hall.

Wow!

Your son now joins the list of the most illustrious musicians of the last century or more because like them, he has performed in Carnegie Hall. I suspect it won't be his last time.

We've had a great trip. Every boy has been expended by the experience, whether learning the ropes on his first overnight KSB road trip, being a great example to the new guys, or becoming a leader, and getting his first taste of being a grad, they have all grown, and we are really proud of all of them. Just the sheer will power to sit up straight with their hands on their knees for a two hour concert rivals some legendary appearances from the early years of KSB.

The guys who are staying for the night had another trip to Times Square for some ice cream. They felt like celebrities when people wanted to take their pictures, some having just come from the concert in Carnegie Hall! We ran into some great street musicians while waiting for the subway, and the boys sang What a Wonderful World with them, and then the opening of Rejoice in the Lamb for them. Lots of fun.

Your son has had a fantastic trip, and is very happy!

KSB's Own Graeme Brown Sings In International Opera Theater’s Production Of Jago

Youngest Member of IOT’s Jago Cast Already Has Impressive Background

April, 2013, Philadelphia: Thirteen-year-old Graeme Brown of Chestnut Hill, soloist with a key role in International Opera Theater’s current production of Jago May 30, 31 and June 1 at the Media Theatre in Media, PA, will also travel with the cast to its presentation June 7 in Citta di Saluzzo, Italy.

Graeme comes to IOT with impressive chops. He has been with Keystone State Boychoir (KSB) since he was seven years old and is presently part of its well-known octet “The Eight Sopranos.” He is a frequent soloist and performed with other members of KSB in Oliver on Broadway with Irish Repertory Theatre. KSB is the official boy choir of Opera Philadelphia (formerly Opera Company of Philadelphia). Graeme has performed four of its operas including Tosca, Carmen, La Boheme and – as a fitting prelude to Jago – Otello.

Jago (ee-YAH-go) had its world premiere in Italy in 2009. Media is hosting its American premiere, the first Italian-composed opera to premiere in the U.S.A. in 100 years. In recognition, Media declared the first week in May to be International Opera Theater Week.

The opera is IOT’s homage to Verdi on the great composer’s 200^th birthday, and its plot begins where Verdi’s Otello ends. Jago awaits execution in a dank prison cell, encased in his own 15-year vow of silence. A child, Kasim, son of Jago’s prison guard, makes his way to the cell, and a relationship develops between the two which will forever change both lives. Graeme is Kasim.

Graeme is in the seventh grade at J.R. Masterman, a magnet school visited by President Obama in 2010 for his “back to School” speech. Graeme is currently a Tenderfoot Boy Scout and, following in his father’s footsteps, aspires to the rank of Eagle. He’s in the chess club at Masterman, which came in first nationally for the middle school chess team. He looks forward to joining the robotics club and also loves playing baseball and swimming in the ocean.

International Opera Theater, now in its tenth year, is based in both Philadelphia and Italy and has presented 10 world premieres. Jago, written by IOT founder and artistic director Karen Saillant, is composed by Carlo Pedini with a libretto by Lucio Lironi, and will be conducted by Maestro Gianmaria Griglio. All but American Karen are Italian.

Come Hear The World Traveled Keystone State Boychoir At Willow Grove United Methodist Church This Sunday

Willow Grove, PA – Don’t miss the Keystone State Boychoir at Willow Grove United Methodist Church, 34 N. York Road, on Sunday, May 5 at 3 pm. KSB is the only choir in the world to have toured all seven continents and recently members returned from a peace concert in Hiroshima, Japan where they represented the United States and performed with musicians from all over the world. Last summer KSB sang at a ceremony in Oslo, Norway for Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi.

“We are thrilled to have the energy and musical expertise of the boys from Keystone State Boychoir coming to Willow Grove. This is a rare concert in the northern suburbs, and a great chance for our community to hear them. They are inspiring to hear and a joy to watch. We can't wait,” says Rev. Cynthia Skripak of Willow Grove United Methodist Church. The church has many outreach programs including a free dinner for community members on the third Sunday of each month, a youth indoor soccer league during the winter and sending a mission team to Appalachia this summer as it has for over 30 years in a row. Willow Grove United Methodist was the first congregation to come to Willow Grove 125 years ago. The church’s sanctuary contains noteworthy, contemporary stained glass windows by the renowned Willet Studios, which also created windows for the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The concert at Willow Grove United Methodist is a free will offering.

KSB’s spring concert will be held on May 19 at the First Presbyterian Church in Germantown featuring Benjamin Britten’s “Rejoice in the Lamb” for choir and organ. The 2013 KSBoychoir Festival, “Where the Music Comes From”, will be held on May 22 for any boy who loves to sing and travel the world.

Keystone State Boychoir Kicks Off New Year With 17 New Members

Philadelphia – Seventeen new Keystone State Boychoir members felt the excitement and the honor last weekend as they donned their new green jackets, awarded on stage during the "HarP! the Herald Angels Sing" holiday concert at The First Presbyterian Church in Germantown on Sunday, January 6. The boys worked hard over the last sixteen weeks to earn their coveted jackets. They performed in their jackets for the first time and were aglow as they took the stage with fellow KSB members, choir directors and talented harpist and KSB alum Jordan Thomas, a Peabody Conservatory senior who accompanied the choir.

One new member Justin Austin, age 10 of University City, said he was proud to recite the KSB pledge as he received his jacket, “It was a lot of hard work to learn the songs. I learned a lot and had a great time.”

About the Keystone State Boychoir

The Keystone State Boychoir, (KSB), founded in 2001, has enjoyed unprecedented success for an organization so young, and is recognizedtoday as one of the finest community-based boychoir programs in the world. InOctober of 2011, KSB celebrated the milestone of its 10th Anniversary Season bybringing together for the first time all of the the region's boychoirs and morethan five hundred local boy singers on stage in Verizon Hall for B1K! -Boychoir of 1,000!

KSB consists of more than 170 young men between the ages ofeight and eighteen who sing an enthralling repertoire from the classical to thecontemporary. Major choral works that KSB has performed include Bach's St.Matthew's Passion, Orff'sCarmina Burana, Handel's Messiah, Mendelssohn'sElijah, Britten's St. Nicolas, and the Fauré Requiem. In January 2013, KSB willcelebrate the 100th Anniversary of Benjamin Britten's birth by performing thecomplete A Ceremony of Carols with KSB alumnus and harpist Jordan Thomas.

KSB has sung with the region's most distinguished ensembles,including the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Opera Company of Philadelphia, forwhich it serves as its official boychoir. KSB has appeared in the area's mostprominent venues including the Perelman Theater and Verizon Hall in the KimmelCenter for the Performing Arts, the Academy of Music, and the Mann MusicCenter. Internationally, KSB has performed in major concert halls, includingthe Manaus Opera House in Brazil, the Petronas Philharmonik Hall in Malaysia,and the Hanoi Opera House in Vietnam, as well as in venues throughout Canada,Brazil, Chile, South Africa, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia,Australia, Monaco, France, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria and Norway.

In December of 2009, KSB made history as the first choir totravel to and perform in Antarctica. In doing so, KSB became the first choir tohave sung on all seven continents. In July of 2012, KSB made history again whenit travelled above the Arctic Circle to Svalbard, Norway - the most northernsettlement in the world. There KSB sang in the northernmost church and theatreon the globe.

Globe-Trotting Keystone State Boychoir Performs At Widener University’s International Celebration

Chester, PA - The world-travelled Keystone State Boychoir (KSB) only has to go as far as Chester, Pennsylvania next week where it will perform at Widener University’s Multi-Cultural and International Week. KSB will take the stage on Monday, November 12 as a part of the university’s celebration of world cultures. The concert will take place at 7:00 pm in the Alumni Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.

KSB is the perfect fit for this event as the only choir in the world to have toured all seven continents. In 2009, KSB made history as the first choir to perform in Antarctica. More recently, KSB sang at a ceremony in Oslo, Norway for Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi and presented her with a Liberty Bell. Internationally, KSB has performed in the world’s major concert halls, including the Manaus Opera House in Brazil, the Petronas Philharmonik Hall in Malaysia, and the Hanoi Opera House in Vietnam, as well as in venues throughout Canada, Brazil, Chile, South Africa, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia, Monaco, France, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria and Norway.

Keystone State Boychoir to Sing at Choral Directors' Conference

York, PA - Do not miss Keystone State Boychoir (KSB) when it brings the house down this Friday at the American Choral Directors Association of Pennsylvania’s (ACDA-PA) Fall Choral Conference. KSB has been invited to take the stage as the opening performance at the prestigious ACDA-PA conference in an open-to-the-public concert at Zion United Methodist Church in York on Friday, October 19 at 8 pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $15.

Of course, no boychoir tour to York would be complete without a visit to nearby Hershey Park. The boys are excited to eat chocolate and ride roller coasters almost as much as they are excited to sing for the conference attendees.

Approximately 60 selected members of KSB will travel to York for the weekend. KSB member Konstantin Minch, who is 15 years old, says, “Whether it’s Antarctica or a little closer to home like York, traveling with KSB is always a great time. We rehearse, perform and have a lot of fun together. After concerts, people from the audience shake our hands and sometimes hug us because they enjoyed the concert so much. This tour, we get to go on roller coasters and eat chocolate! The penguins in Antarctica were cool, but rides are better.”

Audiences are always moved by KSB’s angelic sound, as well as the boys compelling stage presence. Known as “Pennsylvania’s Boychoir,” KSB has garnered unprecedented success since its inception in 2001 and is considered to be one of the finest community-based boychoirs in the world. KSB has 170 members who range in age from 8 to 18 and come from a range of backgrounds and counties in Pennsylvania including Delaware, Bucks, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties.

Under the direction of Joseph P. Fitzmartin and Steven Fisher, KSB has sung to full houses locally and abroad, from local retirement centers, to the Kimmel Center, to concert halls in Vietnam, Australia and Brazil. This Spring KSB made its debut on Broadway in "Oliver!" with Tony-Award winner Brian Stokes Mitchell. KSB is the only choir to have sung on all seven continents. It made history in 2009 as the first choir to travel to, and perform in, Antarctica. This summer, KSB sang at a ceremony in Oslo, Norway for Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi and presented her with a Liberty Bell. It also sang in the northernmost town in the world in Svalbard, Norway. Having sung at both poles now, KSB has been deemed the “boychoir with latitude attitude.”

The conference next week for the ACDA-PA brings together singers, composers and conductors who share their choral talents in a weekend of events. The ACDA is a non-profit that represents 18,000 choral directors and more than a million singers in the United States whose goal is to bring excellence in choral music through performance, composition, research and teaching.

Keystone State Boychoir Performs With The Opera Company Of Philadelphia

Philadelphia - Sixteen boys from the Keystone State Boychoir (KSB) are performing on stage at the Academy of Music in the Opera Company of Philadelphia’s (OCP) production of La Bohème. KSB, together with its sister-choir Pennsylvania Girlchoir, serve as the official children’s choir of OCP. Twelve girls are also part of the production.

The boys performing in the opera come from neighborhoods throughout the city and the surrounding suburbs, some as young as 11 years old. They have been attending rehearsals since August, learning to sing in Italian alongside the opera's stars. Last week, they were excited to be fitted for costumes (see picture below). La Bohème is a melodic, heart-warming love story of a shy seamstress and a passionate poet that takes place in a bohemian Paris of the past.

KSB brings together 160 boys between the ages 8 and 18 to sing a wide-ranging repertoire of music from classic to contemporary. Under the direction of Joseph P. Fitzmartin and Steven M. Fisher, KSB has been lauded around the world for their superlative musicianship and engaging stage presence. Recently, KSB made its Broadway debut in a performance of "Oliver!." In 2009, KSB made history as the first choir to perform in Antarctica.

KSB's Annual Grad Concert for Baris and Grads

This is the concert at which we say good bye to our graduating seniors, and it is a moving celebration of the time they have spent making music with KSB.

Commonwealth Youthchoirs Announces Seventh Annual Gala Concert

Philadelphia, PA, May 16, 2011—Commonwealth Youthchoirs has announced that their Seventh Annual Gala Concert featuring the premiere choirs in Keystone State Boychoir and Pennsylvania Girlchoir, with special guest artist, bass-baritone David Pittsinger will be held at the Kimmel Center on June 17, 2011.

CY Executive Director Susan S. Ashbaker said, “We are thrilled to return to the Perelman once again and have many things to celebrate on this occasion.” The choirs will present their fourth commission, by composer Thomas Pasatieri, entitled CONVERGENCE: A Charm of Moonlight. Originally conceived for inclusion in the city wide Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts and performed as an experiential musical journey through the galleries of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the choirs will perform this opus as one of the highlights in the concert. In correspondence to Ashbaker, Pasatieri, well known not only for his work in the classical field, but for his film orchestrations for Hollywood hits such as Shawshank Redemption, Little Mermaid, Fried Green Tomatoes, and Angels in America among others, wrote, “I have enjoyed writing this cycle very much and hope they bring you as much pleasure performing them as they have brought me in their writing.” Mark Anderson, Music Director of Pennsylvania Girlchoir, and conductor of the world premiere performances at the museum added, “Mr. Pasatieri's subtle shifts in color and timbre made for a very special work. The music captured beautifully the essence of the texts - both in the individual movements, and as a complete journey from the first statement in the introduction to the Coda. Even if the listener understands not a word of French, the rise and fall of hope, loss, expectation, tension and regret are readily understood. The composition is a real gem.”

International opera star, Bass-Baritone, David Pittsinger, joins an impressive roster of gala guests when he performs with the choirs this June. Pittsinger is one of the most sought after artists of his generation. His appearances with the Metropolitan Opera have included broadcast performances as The Friar in Verdi’s Don Carlo, Trulove in The Rake’s Progress, Achilla in Giulio Cesare, Colline in La Bohème, and as The Speaker in the Met’s first HD broadcast of Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Pittsinger’s 2009 season began with his Broadway debut as Emile de Becque in the Tony award-winning production of South Pacific, and his critically acclaimed performances of Enobarbus in Samuel Barber’s Antony and Cleopatra at Carnegie Hall. Of his Helen Hayes Award-nominated performance as Emile de Becque in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific at the Kennedy Center, the Washington Times wrote: “His brilliant, knife-clean bass-baritone voice, impeccable enunciation—even with a French accent—and his authoritative, passionate delivery provide the perfect mix of romance, passion, and traditional masculine bravado.” Audiences in Philadelphia will remember Pittsingers’ recent Emile de Becque in South Pacific at the Academy of Music. Keystone State Boychoir to Honor Mandela in Song and Service
Only choir to have sung on all 7 continents returns to South Africa

Philadelphia, June 27, 2011: Celebrating its 10^th Anniversary, Keystone State Boychoir (KSB) will embark on a three-week concert tour in South Africa on July 6, 2011. Having toured South Africa in its first season, KSB is returning to the country with the distinction of being the only choir to have sung on all seven continents, including Antarctica.

This “Happy Birthday, Madiba!” Concert Tour* will honor through song and community service the great Nelson Mandela. Mandela has asked that, on his birthday (July 18^th), his fellow South Africans perform 67 minutes of community service, rather than simply take a day off. The 67 minutes represents the number of years he spent fighting apartheid. KSB has decided to travel to South Africa during the hero’s birthday month and honor his request in every city they visit.

Steven Fisher, Associate Music Director, says: “Nelson Mandela is one of the few, true heroes alive today. It’s important that the boys know who he is, and what he stands for. He stood up for South Africans and in doing so, stood up for us all. ”

The Boychoir will sing concerts in Kimberley, Winterton, Piet Retief, Kruger National Park, Pretoria, Johannesburg, Nylstroom, Soweto, Tygerberg, Cape Town, and Rondebosch. The Boychoir will be hosted by the St. Cyprian’s Grammar School, Kimberley Children’s Choir, Drakensberg Boys Choir, Highveld Youth Choir, Jakaranda Kinderkoor, Tyberberg Kinderkoor, and the Rondebosch Boys’ Preparatory School. This “Happy Birthday Madiba” Concert Tour will honor, through song, the great Nelson Mandela. Each day of the concert tour, the boys will perform 67 minutes of community and musical service, as requested by Madiba.

On-line and Social Media Rules

The following rules provide direction for choir members and their families when participating in on-line or social media activities.

By accessing, creating or contributing to any blogs, tweets, wikis, or other on-line or other social media that references the Commonwealth Youthchoirs (or its member choirs: Keystone State Boychoir, Pennsylvania Girlchoir, and FYI), you agree to abide by these rules. Please read them carefully.

The Code of Conduct applies to all choir members and their families when participating in on-line and/or social media activities that involve or reference the Commonwealth Youthchoirs, its’ member choirs or any member of the choirs.
As a general matter, conduct that is inappropriate at a member choir rehearsal, on tour, or during performances is inappropriate online.
Post only appropriate content. This includes links to other content. Each choir has members who are of varying ages and maturity level, and therefore, content that may be appropriate for older members will not be appropriate for younger members. Use common sense. When in doubt, do not post before asking your parent, member choir directors, or membership coordinator.
Posting personal information about choir members or identifying any choir member by last name is strictly prohibited under all circumstances (even if the choir member said it is OK).
Photos, videos and musical performances of any of the member choirs belongings to the Commonwealth Youthchoir and must not be posted on-line or in social media without permission from the Executive Director, staff (directors, managers or coordinators) or the CY Marketing Committee.
The choir insignia and name of the Commonwealth Youthchoirs and each member choir belongs to the Commonwealth Youthchoirs and must not be posted on-line or in social media without permission from the Executive Director, staff or the CY Marketing Committee.
