Australia: University of Sydney World Scholars Awards to Undertake a PhD Degree

Overview

The University of Sydney World Scholars awards provide opportunities for academically gifted PhD candidates who have developed innovative research projects to undertake a PhD degree at the University of Sydney with financial support. This prestigious award will attract high-quality research candidates from a broad range of countries and disciplines. Candidates will engage in progressive research whilst facilitating the development of strong bilateral research linkages between Australia and the rest of the world.

General Guidelines

World Scholars awards support the full cost of academic tuition fees for up to three (3) years on the terms set out in these Guidelines. The scholarship will also fund a travel contribution towards the cost of a return international airfare (as set out in the „Air Travel‟ section of the Scholarship Conditions, below).
Applications are invited from international students who are citizens of the following countries (“Participating Countries”):
- Asia: Cambodia, Hong Kong SAR, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam
- Europe: France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom
- Americas: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, United States
- Africa: Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda

Candidates will be required to take up the scholarship in the semester for which it is offered. Deferral of the scholarship will not be permitted.

Selection for World Scholars is highly competitive. Applicants will be chosen on the basis of academic excellence and demonstrated research capability. It is important that applicants clearly address these selection criteria in their PhD application documentation.

The University is actively negotiating with governments and agencies in Participating Countries to identify possibilities for further support for World Scholars. Details of any agreements reached, together with the level of additional support available and any conditions associated therewith, will be posted on the University‟s website:

Scholarship Benefits

A University of Sydney World Scholars award covers the following costs:
- full academic tuition fee costs for approved PhD study at the University of Sydney for up to three (3) years; and
- a travel contribution of up to AUD $1,250 each way towards the cost of a return air fare from the awardee‟s identified country of citizenship to Sydney.
Applicants should note that a World Scholars award does not include any living allowance, Overseas Student Health Cover, visa application costs, or any other costs other than those outlined above. All other costs must be met by the student. Applicants should not apply for World Scholars unless they know – at the time of application – that they are able to meet all costs not covered by this award.

Eligible candidates

Scholarships are available for new international students enrolling in a PhD at the University of Sydney, who hold citizenship of a Participating Country, and who meet all academic and English-language proficiency criteria required for admission to a PhD. In order to be considered for a World Scholars award, applicants must:

- be a citizen of a Participating Country;
- not be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia, or have applied for Australian permanent residency;
- meet all academic and English-language proficiency criteria for admission to their chosen PhD; and
- have a Firm Offer of Admission to a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Sydney commencing in Semester 1 2011, issued on or before 10 September 2010 (applicants with a Conditional Offer of Admission will not be considered).
Currently enrolled international students and other students of the University of Sydney are not eligible to apply for a World Scholars award. Please also note the further restrictions outlined in the „Scholarship Conditions‟ section of these Guidelines.

How to Apply

Applying for a World Scholars award is a two-stage process. Applicants must complete both stages, in order, as follows:

Stage 1: PhD application and admission

Candidates must lodge an application for a PhD degree, and obtain a Firm Offer of Admission, prior to lodging a World Scholars application.
Before lodging a PhD application, candidates are required to make contact with a potential academic supervisor and discuss their proposed research project. PhD candidates may search for a potential academic supervisor using the Research Supervisor Connect tool on the University of Sydney website:

Once candidates have made contact with a potential academic supervisor and prepared a research proposal, they should submit a Postgraduate Research Application Form.

The average processing time for PhD applications, once received at the University of Sydney, is six weeks. Some applications may take longer to process, particularly where insufficient documentation has been provided. PhD applications should be lodged no later than 31 July 2010. The University cannot guarantee that PhD applications lodged after this date will be assessed and issued with a Firm Offer of Admission in time for World Scholars consideration.
Candidates must have a Firm Offer of Admission to their chosen PhD issued on or before 10 September 2010 in order to proceed to Stage 2. A Conditional Offer of Admission is not sufficient.

Stage 2: Scholarship application

Candidates who have received a Firm Offer of Admission to a PhD issued on or before 10 September 2010 may proceed with a World Scholars application.
Once a Firm Offer of Admission has been received, candidates must complete and submit a University of Sydney World Scholars Application Form. This form can be found at the end of these Guidelines, or downloaded from:

Overview

The ASEAN Scholarships for Cambodia is tenable for 4 years leading to the award of the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Advanced GCE A-Level (or equivalent) certificate.

The Scholarship is for studies in selected Singapore schools from Secondary Three to Pre-University Two and is renewed annually, subject to the satisfactory performance of the scholar.

Students from Cambodia are welcome to apply for the ASEAN Scholarships for Cambodia to enter Singapore schools at the Secondary Three level. Candidates who are not short-listed for the scholarships will be considered for the Merit Awards.

Eligible Candidates

Students who meet the following criteria are invited to apply for the scholarship:

■ Nationals of Cambodia
■ Born between 1994 to 1996
■ Have completed at least Grade 10 of Senior High School / Upper Secondary
■ Performed consistently well in their examinations, in particular Mathematics and the Sciences
■ Offered English as a subject in Grade 10
■ Proficiency in English and a good record of participation in extra-curricular activities would be an advantage

Overview

The Government of Japan (MEXT: Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology) offers scholarships to Cambodian students who wish to study in Japan.

1. Category

There are 4 categories, as follows:

1)Research students

You must be under 35 years of age and a college graduate (includes prospective graduates). Or you must have completed 16 years of schooling.

2)Undergraduate university students

You must be at least 17 and under 22 years of age and have completed 12 years of school education or have completed courses in a school comparable to a high school (includes prospective graduates).

3)College of technology students

You must be at least 17 and under 22 years of age and have completed school education comparable to a high school (a minimum of 11 years beginning in primary school) education (includes prospective graduates).

4)Professional training college students

You must be at least 17 and under 22 years of age and have completed 12 years of schooling or have completed school education comparable to a Japanese high school (includes prospective graduates).

Eligible Candidates

Applicants must have the following qualifications:

commitment to public service and potential for advancement in their professions.
A minimum of five years of professional experience commensurate with the type of study and training experience they seek and should be policy rather than research or technically oriented.

Completed a university degree program requiring at least four years of full-time study in order to qualify for admission to U.S. programs of graduate study.
Proficiency in both written and spoken English with a minimum TOEFL test scores of 525 paper-based or 71 Internet-based. Candidates with lower scores may be nominated for the Long Term English Training.

Demonstrate the required experience, skills, and commitment while also indicating how they can benefit from this program in ways that they have not already experienced.

Persons are not eligible if they are:

- Recent university graduates, even if they have significant positions.
University teachers with no management responsibilities.

- Individuals who have attended a graduate school in the U.S. for one academic year or more during the seven years prior to August 2010.

- Individuals with other recent U.S. experience (more than six months during the five years prior to August 2010).

- The Humphrey Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States, tuition fees and living expenses for full-time study. Grant provisions do not include financial support for dependents.

Applicants who do not already have an official TOEFL score of 525 or above should plan to take the TOEFL Institutional Testing Program (ITP) on June 19, 2010 at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. Registration for the ITP is available through the Educational Advising Center at RUPP from Monday-Friday, with a registration deadline of June 14, 2010. Scholarization is very honored to announce one prestigious scholarship, better known as JISPA, now available for developing countries. The Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Asia (JISPA) was first introduced in 1993. It is funded by the Government of Japan, administered by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and conducted at various graduate schools in Japan. Its objective is to contribute to institutional capacity building in economic policymaking to promote the sustainable growth of emerging and developing economies in Asia and the Pacific. By training future macroeconomic managers in these countries, the JISPA aims to enable them to better formulate sound economic and financial stability policies needed for sustainable growth and development.

The JISPA targets highly motivated government officials who may serve as future macroeconomic policy makers with the capacity and vision to contribute effectively to the economic development of their countries. Scholarship awards are made on the basis of the candidate’s academic record and work background, mathematical and statistics skills, English language proficiency, and potential for contributing to the macroeconomic and financial management and economic development of their country. The assessment also includes qualities such as the candidate’s commitment to public service, willingness to learn, and openness to new ideas.

Target countries

Target Countries: Under current program guidelines, candidates must be a national of one of the following countries:

Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Lao P.D.R., Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pacific Island Countries, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

What's on offer

The scholarship covers tuition-related costs and most living expenses for the scholar herself/himself. Officials who receive the JISPA scholarship cannot accept other scholarships. Scholars are expected to devote full time to their studies while in Japan.

The program comprises two tracks: the partnership track and the open track. Because of the strong competition for scholarships, the JISPA is highly selective. In 2010-2011, a total of 30 new scholarships are available to candidates for the partnership track. There is no fixed limit on new scholarships for the open track, but generally only a small number of scholarships are awarded.

The Partnership Track

The partnership track of the JISPA allows scholars to study a specially designed graduate level course concentrating on macroeconomics at an IMF partnership university. In 2010, the partnership universities that will be accepting scholars are:

Partnership Universities National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS): one year program

Hitotsubashi University (HIT): two year program

International University of Japan (IUJ): two year programAll subjects, including the thesis component, are taught entirely in English.

The universities offer subjects that cover essential elements that will allow scholars to enter the macroeconomic policy dialogue at an international level. They also offer various optional subjects that will allow scholars to pursue their particular interests, relevant to the topic of their master’s thesis. This thesis component is considered one of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of the program.Subjects are taught by dedicated professors, many of whom have experience working as professionals of the IMF, World Bank, or other international institutions.

The application deadline for the partnership track is December 10, 2009. After an initial screening of applications, select candidates will be contacted by the IMF to arrange an interview, which is typically done in-country with representatives from the partnership universities. A math and/or English examination may also be administered at this time. Final selection will be made on the basis of the in-country interview, math and English competencies, the application form, and any other supplementary information. 1. Completed application form: The applicant for the partnership track is requested to apply through the online application system. (The on-line application will be made available by the mid-October, 2009.) The blank application form can be reviewed for reference only.

2. Official transcripts and official copies of diplomas or degree certificates from all undergraduate and graduate schools: An official copy means a certified copy of the original document with an official seal obtained from the administration office of the university attended. Copies attested by organizations/persons not having notarized/legal bearing will not be accepted.

3. Two reference letters: References should be from applicants’ supervisor at work and/or an 3cademic advisor or professor.

4. TOEFL/IELTS certificate (if available): The TOEFL/IELTS test score must be from an examination taken after December 10, 2007. If a score is unavailable, the applicant will be requested to sit for a TOEFL/IELTS examination prior to receiving a final decision on the scholarship award.All submitted application material must be presented in English or be accompanied by an official English translation. The material will be considered under the control of the IMF and provided to the relevant school(s) and the Government of Japan as it sees appropriate. None of the material will be returned to applicants.

* Yokohama National University (YNU) accepts new scholars every other year. It will not accept any new scholars for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Work: Candidates should also currently work for one of the following or related agencies:central bank, ministry of economy, ministry of finance, ministry of planning/development, ministry of trade/commerce, tax administration, or national statistics bureau.The program will also consider officials working in other areas of government that have a significant impact on the formulation or implementation of macroeconomic policy.

Education Background: Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent with at least 16 years of formal education. Names of schools and attending dates beginning from primary school must be listed in the application. In some cases, 15 years of formal education may be accepted if there is an official explanation (a country’s particular educational system or other exceptional circumstances).

English proficiency: Applicants must have an English language proficiency, which needs to be demonstrated as equivalent to or more than an official TOEFL score of 550, CBT213, or iBT79-80. If TOEFL scores are not available, then an overall IELTS score of at least 6.0 can be substituted.

Admission to the University: The applicants must be accepted in a graduate-level program in an appropriate discipline. The scholars who have already commenced their studies in Japan may be also considered by the IMF.Application procedures1. Completed application form (preferably typed).

VLIR-UOS Training and Master Scholarship Program for Developing Countries, Belgium

Application and selection procedure

Applicants applying both for academic admission and for a VLIR-UOS scholarship need to consider both the admission requirements and the scholarship criteria.Applicants applying for academic admission but not for a scholarship, simply need to consider the admission requirements from the host university where the programme is organised.

The host university is in charge of the academic admission of applications. Study results will be taken into consideration during the selection but relevant professional experience and prospects for applying the acquired insights after return to the country are the most important academic selection criteria. The academic admission requirements are specific for every programme.

The scholarship selection is carried out by a joint selection commission of VLIR-UOS and the host university. The host university – not the applicant! – forwards the applications for a scholarship to the VLIR-UOS secretariat after the academic admission. The VLIR-UOS scholarship criteria are taken into consideration. These criteria consist of, on the one hand, qualification criteria which need to be fulfilled in any case by all scholarship applicants and, on the other hand, of selection criteria that are evaluated by the selection committee.

Applicants, who are accepted both academically and for the scholarship, will be contacted by e-mail by VLIR-UOS and the host university at the latest on 15 May 2010. Scholarization: Japanese Grant Aid for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) was first implemented in the Kingdom of Cambodia for Japanese fiscal year (JFY) 2001 by the assistance of the Government of Japan.

The objective of JDS Program in Cambodia is to provide nationals of Cambodia with opportunities for academic research at Japanese higher educational institutions (hereinafter refereed to as "universities") in order to support the Royal Government of Cambodia in its efforts to facilitate its own plans for human resources development, mainly for capacity building and institutional building. And thereby it extends and enhances the bilateral relationship between Cambodia and Japan.The JDS Program targets young Public Servants and others who are expected to engage in formulating and implementing social and economic development plans with the potential to play leadership roles in their specialties after their return to Cambodia as well as to become leaders in Cambodia in the 21st century. Under this program, Master courses in English at Japanese universities will be provided mainly for the Public Servant.

Remarks for JDS Cambodia 2010
From Japanese Fiscal Year 2009, it wasdecided that the open recruitment of candidates is NOT implemented. Instead,only the applications from those who are officially nominated by responsibleorganizations (so called, "Nominate Organization") are accepted to theprogram.Therefore, applications from those who are NOT officially nominated bythe designated Nominate Organizations will NOT be accepted.This system appliesfor all applicants, Public Servant and Private Sector, so the application isaccepted as long as the applicants are officially nominated.

For the JDS project in Cambodia, the “Components (≒Development issue to study)" are set as follows. In addition, mainly Ministries are set under the each component as "Nominate Organization and all applicants must be nominated by one of the Nominate Organizations in order to apply for JDS.(See "Application Guideline" in detail).

Qualifications and requirements

1) Nationality: Applicants must be citizens of Cambodia

2) Age:Applicants shall be between the ages of 22 and 34 as of 1st April, 2010. (Born on/after 2nd April 1975 and on/before 1st April 1988) *For the development issue "Improvement of the Quality of Basic Health Care Service", the age requirement shall be between the ages of 22 and 39 as of April 1, 2010 (Born on/after 2nd April 1970 and on/before April 1st, 1988) if an applicant holds bachelor of Medical Doctor.

4) Work Experience:Public Servant: More than 2 years of working experience as a public servantOthers: More than 2 years of full-time working experience

5) Language Proficiency:TOEFL 500 / IELTS 5.5 or equivalent is preferable (not required)

6) Health:Applicants must be in good mental and physical health(Those who passed first selection will undergo a medical check-up at the time of second selection in Phnom Penh)

7) Ineligibility:Applicants who is currently receiving (or is scheduled to receive) another scholarship such as the Government of Japan (Monbu-kagakusho) scholarship, a scholarship from a private-sector organization, etc. shall NOT be eligible for selection as JDS fellow.Applicant who have obtained master's degree or higher in overseas under the support of foreign scholarship.

Exclusion of military personnel:Applicants must not be serving in the military. (Military personnel and military civilian employees registered on he active list are not eligible to apply for admission. Personnel on temporary leave from the active list shall also be ineligible for admission. However, Personnel in compulsory military service are eligible)

8) Others:Successful candidates of the final selection must submit a pledge to The Royal Government of Cambodia to commit to follow the rules for JDS scholarship fellows. If a fellow violates any article of the pledge, the scholarship can be cancelled and other necessary steps will be taken.

b. Qualification Check;JICE JDS Office carries out qualification screening and checks all required application documents.

c. 1st Selection (Document screening)Application documents and research plans will be sent to Japan and examined by professors of the accepting universities where the candidates are supposed to study a development issue (component) they choose.

d. Basic learning ability test; (This NOT a selection)During the period of 1st Selection, all candidates are required to take English proficiency test (ITP-TOEFL) in Phnom Penh on 3 Oct, 2009.Part of the candidates may be required to take Mathematical aptitude test depending on the request of the Universities..

e.Medical check-up; (This NOT a selection)The candidates who pass the 1st selection must take Medical Check-Up in Phnom Penh arranged by JICE in the middle of October, 2009.Regardless a result of selection, the candidates can be disqualified depending on the result of Medical Check-Up.

f. 2nd Selection (Technical Interview)The candidates will take Technical Interview in Phnom Penh conducted by interviewers of the accepting universities in the middle of end of Oct, 2009.

g. 3rd Selection (Comprehensive Interview)The candidates will take Comprehensive Interview in Phnom Penh conducted by representatives of the JDS Operating Committee in the middle of Nov., 2009.

h. After the selectionFinal selected candidates will be required to prepare for necessary documents including JDS Pledge so as to commit to join JDS program officially.Pre-departure orientations will be held occasionally depending on necessity.Pre-departure training or assignments might be provided by some of the accepting universities

i. Admission procedureFinal selected candidates will be required to fill in an admission form provided by each accepting universities.When the document is officially admitted by the accepting universities, and when Government of Japan and Government make agreement, the final selected candidates are finally regarded as "JDS fellow".

Scholarship value/inclusions:

An all inclusive lump-sum contribution equivalent in local currency to US$20,000 per year for each selected beneficiary to support her/him during study/research in Israel. The Japanese Government receives about 100 scholars from the Philippines under six different scholarship categories:

Japanese Scholarship- This scholarship covers a 1-year period of studying Japanese language, life and culture.

Khmer Intellectuals: Applications are currently being considered for 16 fully funded scholarships (fees and stipend for 8 EU and 8 non-EU students) on the prestigious 2-year Erasmus-Mundus European Masters programme on Computer Vision and Robotics (VIBOT) between Heriot Watt University (UK), the Universite de Bourgogne (France) and the Universitat de Girona (Spain).

VIBOT is one of the European Union`s flagship Erasmus-Mundus courses. The key aim of VIBOT is to produce the next generation of leading engineering researchers to solve important future challenges in a broad range of engineering applications. Starting from a comprehensive coverage of the prerequisites in the field of digital imagery and basic image processing, the students will cover at specialized level all subjects of artificial vision applied to robotics, medical imagery and 3D vision.

This Masters programme will provide an unrivalled knowledge in computer vision and robotics applied to industrial problems and medical imagery. Moreover, the students will have also acquired a mobility, a broadmindedness and the language skills which constitute, in an age of globalization, a major asset for finding research work either in a public laboratory or in a private company.

VIBOT encompasses a broad spectrum of scientific and engineering research from fundamental theoretical results to applied engineering solutions that have strong industrial relevance. Individuals within the VIBOT research network are leading authorities on areas ranging from computer vision, autonomous vehicles, statistical signal processing, robotics and image processing.

The Masters candidates will experience research cultures in three different European countries and will be able to draw on the expertise from leading experts in different disciplines and different nationalities. The students spend the first semester in Scotland, the second in Spain and the third in France. The fourth semester is reserved for the 5-month Masters research project at one of the host universities or in industry.

Selection Criteria

Admission to VIBOT is highly competitive and based on academic excellence. Applicants should have a minimum of a BSc degree in computer science, electrical engineering, physics or mathematics. The VIBOT research programme is intended for top level non-EU and EU students with a fluent knowledge in spoken and written English (TOEFL 550). Applicants are expected to provide a statement of their research interests and motivation.

Khmer Intellectuals: Launched in November 2005, the SEARCA PhD Research Scholarship provides financial support to a limited number of qualified PhD students whose researches are relevant to the priority thrusts of SEARCA.

This scholarship program aims to:

Provide PhD students the opportunity to use the resources and facilities available at SEARCA and its network of universities for their research;Produce quality research papers for publication; andEnable them to work with SEARCA’s R&D personnel on mutually identified areas of concerns/interests in agriculture and rural development.

Any graduate student who is a citizen of any of the 11 SEAMEO member countries (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam) and pursuing a PhD in agriculture or related sciences from any university in the world is eligible to apply for the scholarship.

The applicant must have already completed his/her course work with an approved dissertation proposal and is ready to conduct the dissertation research.

The applicant’s research must focus on any of SEARCA’s priority thrusts under the broad themes of natural resource management and promotion of agricultural competitiveness.

The Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (JCCI) Singapore Foundation, in cooperation with Waseda University in Japan, set up a one-year scholarship program for university undergraduates to study culture, history, society, politics, economics, geography, arts, literature and so forth of Japan and other parts of Asia. The scholarship program was established in 1995 to commemorate Singapore’s 30th Year of National Independence and the 5th Anniversary of JCCI Singapore Foundation.

The Foundation hopes to provide young Singaporeans an opportunity to study in Japan through this program. Also, it wishes to promote further exchanges and cooperation between Singapore and Japan. The successful candidate is thus expected to play the role of a diplomat with the task of strengthening the bilateral relations.

About the objective of this schoalrship

This programme is designed to academically qualify future leaders in politics, law, economics and administration according to the principles of Good Governance and to prepare them in a praxis-oriented course for their professional life. The programme offers very good graduates with a first university degree the chance to obtain a Master’s degreein disciplines that are of special relevance for the social, political and economic development of their home country. With the knowledge and experience acquired in Germany the scholarship holders should later contribute to the establishment of democratically oriented economic and social systems aimed at overcoming social tensions. Inaddition, the training at German institutions of higher education should especially qualify the scholarship holders as partners in political and economic cooperation with Germany. With this programme, DAAD intends to contribute to the support of Good Governance and civil society structures in selected partner countries and regions.

Who can apply?

The scholarship scheme is open to candidates from Africa, Latin America, South Asia, Southeast Asia as well as from countries in the Middle East. Target group Very well qualified graduates with a first university degree (Bachelor or equivalent) who in the future want to actively contribute to the social and economic development of their home countries. The scholarships are offered both for young graduates without professional experience and for mid-career professionals.

What is fundable?

The scholarships are (generally) for two-year Master courses at a German institution of higher education. The successful candidates will study on one of the selected Master courses listed below. The courses have an international orientation and are taught in German and/or English.
The scholarship holders will study in groups and be offered special tutoring at their host institutions. Furthermore, there is the possibility of networking events for participants in different courses and their attendance at tailor-made summer-schools.

Before taking up their Master studies the scholarship holders will be placed on German courses in Germany for normally 6 months (this also applies to scholarship holders in Master courses taught in English).

DAAD pays a monthly scholarship rate of currently 750 €. The scholarship also includes contributions to health insurance in Germany. In addition, DAAD grants an appropriate travel allowance as well as a study and research subsidy and in applicable cases rent subsidies and / or family allowances.

Selection In addition to the study results achieved so far, the main criterion for selection is a convincing description of the subject-related and personal motivation for the study project in Germany and the expected benefit after the return to the home country.

For Master courses taught in German or in German and English, good knowledge of German (ideally at completed A 2 level at the time of application) is an advantage for being able to pass the German language test required for admission to the Master programme at the end of the six-month preparatory German course. For courses taughtin English, proof of good knowledge of English (generally a minimum of 550 TOEFL scores or equivalent) is required.

The university degree should have been obtained during the six years before the application for the scholarship. Applicants cannot be considered if they have been in Germany for more than one year at the time of application.

All Master courses have further additional requirements that must be fulfilled by the applicants at any case.

We invite applications for a full-time Post-doctoral Fellowship with the Space Physics and Energetic Particles Group at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand, supervised by Prof. David Ruffolo. The successful applicant will work with researchers and students at Mahidol University on computer simulations of the magnetic field line random walk and energetic particle or cosmic ray transport in a turbulent plasma; connections with theory and observations will be encouraged. The Human Frontier Science Program offers fellowships for basic research training in the life sciences across national and scientific boundaries. Applications are invited for two international programs that support postdoctoral investigators who explore new research areas. Frontiers of science are often found at the interface of biological and physical sciences and participation of scientists from outside the life sciences is welcomed. Fellows are expected to be exposed to new literature and methods during the tenure of their award while their previous expertise should be reflected in the research project. Applications from female candidates are particularly encouraged.

Long-Term Fellowships are reserved for applicants with a PhD in biology to embark on a new project in a different field of the life sciences. Preference is given to applicants who propose an original study in biology that marks a departure from their previous Ph.D. or postdoctoral work.
Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships are open to applicants with a PhD from outside the life sciences e.g. in physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering or computer sciences and who have had limited research experience in biology during their previous training.Fellowships are for three years and offer flexible use of funding in the final year. The start of the third year can be deferred for up to two years while being supported through other funds thus allowing extension of the training in the host laboratory. Third year funding can also be used to return to the home country allowing the fellows to apply for the HFSP Career Development Award which provides a 3-year start-up grant of $100.000/year to help establish their first independent laboratory. PhD Scholarship in Biological Inorganic Chemistry, Australia

Two studentships are available for study of metal-transporting membrane proteins in Prof. Tony Wedd's laboratory at the Bio21 Institute and School of Chemistry, University of Melbourne. The proteins are produced via cell-free expression and the aim is to understand their function at the molecular level. The projects involve close collaboration with Prof. Volker Dötsch and Dr Frank Bernhard at the Institute of Biophysical Chemistry of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe -University Frankfurt on Main, Germany and the successful applicants will be based in Frankfurt for defined periods.

The University of Melbourne has been ranked amongst the top 20 universities worldwide. The Bio21 Institute is a new multidisciplinary research centre specialising in health-related biotechnology. It is equipped with modern chemistry and biochemistry laboratories including state of the art research platforms (see www.bio21.unimelb.edu.au).

The Melbourne and Frankfurt laboratories specialise, respectively, in the study of metalloproteins and enzymes and in cell free expression systems for membrane proteins (click here or here). The positions offer opportunities to start a career in an area of increasing importance in biological research.

The trace metals are essential to life and the secrets of their catalytic and structural roles are under intensive scrutiny as errors in these pathways cause disease. Suitable candidates should hold a Masters Degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry or Biochemistry with at least 85% Final Weighted Average Grade or equivalent. Successful applicants will be excellent team players. An understanding of the importance of the nutrient metals in biology (trace metals), molecular biology (cloning, PCR, mutagenesis) and protein chemistry (purification, analysis) as well as basic computer skills would be an asset and previous experience in these areas, although not essential, would be an advantage. The academic year starts on September 1, 2009. The scholarship is for a period of two years (Master's period), plus two additional years (PhD period) for students who are accepted on the PhD program. The amount of each stipend is 1,000 euro/month, and tuition fees will be waived.

The successful candidates will be admitted to the Master's program in Economics at the University of Barcelona. The Master's program is recognized by the Ministry of Education and the PhD program has received an award of excellence by the Ministry of Science.

The Master's program comprises core subjects during the first year (Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematics and Econometrics) and three optional subjects from a list. During the second year there are also optional subjects, apart from the Master's thesis.

We expect the candidate to be engaged in the field of "Public Economics" (optional subjects: Public Finance I: Public spending, Public Finance II: Taxation, Fiscal Federalism, Political Economics, and Health Economics). During the PhD period, the candidate will have two supervisors: one from the IEB, and another from the IEB research network. During the third and fourth years, candidates will beencouraged to undertake short periods as visiting researchers at institutions connected with the IEB.

Participation in the Research Program "Fiscal Federalism" provides a unique opportunity to help address issues such as the design of the financial system of sub-national governments, the evaluation of decentralization in the provision of public services, the analysis of inter-governmental tax competition, and the political economy of sub-national policy making. The IEB also provides an excellent research-oriented environment, as it regularly organizes research events such as seminars, workshops and summer schools. The candidate will be encouraged to actively participate in all these events.

Southeast Asian Studies Master Scholarship at Chulalongkorn University

The Southeast Asian Studies Program is multidisciplinary and offers courses in history, arts, culture, economics and political science. Contemporary issues that cut across disciplines are thus easy to address and receive particular attention as part of the studies under the Program. The Program has as an integral part a “Traveling Classroom” involving a trip to another Southeast Asian country, in addition to short field trips within Thailand.

Students in the Program come from all over the world, bringing classes of international environment. Beside Southeast Asians including Thais, foreign students are Americans, Canadians, Norwegians, Swedes, Japanese, Irish, Belgians, as well as Indians, Bangladeshis and Sri Lankans.

The program is a cooperation of the Graduate School and Institute of Asian Studies of Chulalongkorn University. Faculty members and researchers of both institutions with reputation of regional and international stature contribute to the teaching courses offered. In this sense, Southeast Asian Studies by Southeast Asian point of view will be expounded. Scholars are also invited to give lectures. Special talks by world-renowned authority on appropriate topics are frequently organized. The program is very well backed up by library facilitates of the university. Students are further facilitated by the Thai Studies Program at the Faculty of Arts which has long been in operation. School of International Health, The University of Tokyo offers advanced study and research opportunities under the Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) for oversea students from ADB member countries. Applicants for this program must have a citizenship or nationality of a developing country among the ADB member countries. The ADB-JSP at our school is designated for the Doctors Program that usually lasts for three years and commences on 1st April every year. Language used in the program is English.

ADB MEMBER COUNTRIES ELIGIBLE FOR THE PROGRAM:

Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, People’s Republic of, Cook Islands , Fiji, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kiribati, Kyrgyz Republic, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Federated States of, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nauru, Republic of, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Tonga, Tuvalu, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu and Viet Nam.

ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAM

The applicants are evaluated by the School Committee and distinguished applicants are nominated as candidates for the program and subsequently recommended to the Asian Development Bank. Admission to the ADB-JSP is finally granted for about five applicants by the Graduate Council of the University of Tokyo based on the recommendation of School of International Health and approval of ADB.

The University of Tokyo maintains an extremely high academic standard with a limited number of students. Admission to the program is very competitive, thus outstanding applicants are expected to apply.

To be eligible for admission to this program, applicants:

must be a citizen or national of an ADB member country listed above;
must have finished at least 18 years of school education (except language education);
must hold a degree from an accredited institution that is comparable to the Master Degree awarded by the University of Tokyo;
must have working experience for at least two years in the field of health/medical science;
must be aged below 35 years;
must not be military personnel;
must be able to arrive in Japan between 1st and 10th of April, 2010
must agree to return to his/her home country after completion of studies under the Program;
must not be living or working in a country other than his/her home country;

*IMPORTANT: The duration of scholarship is only TWO years although Doctors program lasts for three years.There is no guarantee that you can take another scholarship for the third year.

*Applicants already have studied abroad have lesser priority.

SCHEDULE: Deadline for application (All the documents must be submitted): 31stMay, 2009. Notification of preliminary selection by the School Committee: 31st July, 2009. Notification of final selection by the Asian Development Bank: 31stOctober, 2009

* Notification will be made as early as possible after completion of the selection process.

FINANCIAL AID: The ADB-JSP scholarship covers admission and tuition fees, subsistence allowance (minimum 150,000 yen per month), economy class airfare and other expenditures including medical/accident insurance.
