1. Oral sex is linked to throat cancer.

Cancer? Yes, you can get throat cancer from oral sex, says American Cancer Society Chief Medical Officer Otis Brawley, MD.

It's not oral sex, per se, that causes cancer, but the human papillomavirus (HPV), which can be passed from person to person during sex, including oral sex.

Researchers have found that some cancers of the oropharynx (the middle of the throat) and tonsils are probably caused by a certain type of human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is common, but it doesn't always cause cancer. If you aren't exposed to HPV during oral sex, you're not at risk for cancer.

Brawley says that hints of a link between HPV and oropharyngeal cancer came in the late 1980s and early '90s. Researchers noticed an increase in this kind of cancer among people who hadn't been very prone to it before.

It began to affect increasing numbers of people around the age of 40 that didn't smoke or drink, whereas in prior decades these cancers were usually found in older people that smoked cigarettes and heavily drank hard liquor.

2. Oral sex enhances some adult relationships, strains others.

Among adults, oral sex causes stress for some couples and enhances intimacy for others, says sex therapist Louanne Cole Weston, PhD, of Fair Oaks, Calif. She says stress about oral sex often has to do with one partner's concerns about hygiene.

"One person will not want to receive it because he or she worries about the partner's reaction," Weston says.

Some people may also be anxious about their performance -- doing it well enough to please a partner -- or about responding appropriately to receiving it. "Some people can't just let go and receive," Weston says.

Sexual power dynamics may be part of it, too.

"Some people resist doing it because they feel a bit subjugated," Weston says. Her advice for those people: "They have a very important body part between their teeth; and after all, who is in charge in a position like that?"

Other people, Weston says, experience oral sex as a "relationship strengthener" and "a very intimate connection" shared with a partner. "It's being able to look at the partner and see them going into really very personal space," Weston says.

3. Unprotected oral sex is common, but has risks.

Several sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV, herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea, HPV, and viral hepatitis can be passed on through oral sex.

"Oral sex is not safe sex," says Terri Warren, RN, owner of Westover Heights Clinic in Portland, Ore., a private clinic specializing in STDs. "It's safer sex, but it's definitely not safe sex."

The risks depend on a lot of different things, including how many sexual partners you have, your gender, and what particular oral sex acts you engage in.

Using barrier protection can reduce the risk of getting an STD. A barrier can be a condom covering the penis, or a plastic or latex "dental dam" placed over the vulva or anus. Instead of a prepackaged dental dam, a condom cut open to make a sheet is also an acceptable barrier.

But most people don't use protection for oral sex. That's common wisdom, and it's also shown by large-scale surveys of sexually active teens and adults.

4. Oral sex is common among teens.

Many U.S. teens have oral sex before they have vaginal sex. And they don't view it as very risky, says Bonnie Halpern-Felsher, PhD, a pediatrics professor at the University of California, San Francisco.

Compared with vaginal sex, "They really don't consider it as big of a deal," Halpern-Felsher tells WebMD. Past surveys Halpern-Felsher conducted showed that most teens thought that engaging in oral sex would not put them at risk for social, emotional, or health problems. Other surveys she has performed showed teens who said they only had oral sex were less likely than those who had vaginal sex or vaginal and oral sex to report STDs.

Still, there were STDs among all three groups of sexually active teens. Just under 2% of teens who said they'd only had oral sex said they caught an STI, compared with about 5% of those who had vaginal sex only, and 13% of those who had vaginal and oral sex.

The oral sex-only teens were also less likely than other sexually active teens to report getting into trouble with parents, experiencing negative feelings, or having a worsening relationship with a partner because of their sexual activity.

But there was a gender gap in how teens felt about oral sex.

Males were more likely than females to claim social and emotional benefits. Females were more likely to report feeling used or guilty, or that oral sex had hurt a relationship.

World War Veteran Reunite With Sweetheart After 72 Years

A 93-year-old World War II veteran has reunited with his wartime sweetheart more than 70 years after they last said goodbye.

Norwood Thomas was a 21-year-old paratrooper when he met 17-year-old British girl Joyce Morris in London just before D-Day. They dated for a few months before the war intervened and saw Mr Thomas sent to Normandy.
After the war ended he returned to his native America but the pair wrote letters to each other, Mr Thomas even asking his beloved to come to the US and marry him.
But young Joyce misunderstood his letter somehow and thought he had fallen in love with someone else.
She stopped writing and both she and Mr Thomas eventually married other people.
Mr Thomas' wife died in 2001.
Ms Morris moved to Australia with her new husband but their marriage ended in divorce after 30 years.
Despite the time that had passed, Ms Morris never forgot about her American paratrooper and last year she asked one of her sons to find Mr Thomas online.
After the discovery of his name in an article about D-Day in a newspaper in Virginia, the two made contact and spoke on Skype, with the help of their children.
Mr Thomas's local newspaper The Virginian-Pilot heard of the story and a reader started a campaign to send him from his home in Virginia Beach to Australia to meet his long-lost sweetheart again.
Donations flowed in and Air New Zealand donated first class airfares for Mr Thomas and his son Steve, who lives with his father and looks after him.
Before he embarked on the 10,500-mile trip, Mr Thomas told The Virginian-Pilot: "I'd rather die travelling to Australia than live sitting around at home wondering 'what if?'
"I'm just looking forward to seeing her smile" and "giving her a squeeze".
As they stood in the Australian city of Adelaide many hours later sharing their first embrace in more than seven decades, they laughed.
Mr Thomas told Channel 10: "This is about the most wonderful thing that could have happened to me."
Ms Morris, now 88 and struggling with failing eyesight, laughed, adding: "We're going to have a wonderful fortnight."

The Peacekeeping Base Of UN Under Attack In Mali

Unknown gunmen have attacked a United Nations police base in the Malian city of Timbuktu, the UN said, while security sources said a Malian army checkpoint in the city had also come under fire.
Olivier Salgado, spokesman for the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali (MINUSMA), told Al Jazeera the assailants launched the attack after they detonated a car bomb at the base at 6:30am on Friday.
He said one policeman was slightly wounded in the assault, and the attackers remained holed up inside the base.
Malian and MINUSMA forces were still engaged in a gunfight, Salgado said, adding that the base was already in the process of being relocated, meaning only about 20 police officers were there at the time.
A military source in Timbuktu told Reuters news agency the UN site, near the entrance to the city, had been taken over exclusively by a Nigerian police contingent.
Simultaneously, a Malian army checkpoint in the Kabara neighbourhood near the airport was attacked by gunmen. It was not immediately clear if there were any casualties.
Armed groups, who briefly held the city of Timbuktu in 2012 until French forces drove them out, have stepped up attacks in Mali in recent months as part of a growing regional insurgency.
In November, a breakaway al-Qaeda faction from the country's troubled north, al-Mourabitoun, claimed responsibility for a brazen attack on a five-star hotel that killed 21 people in the heart of the capital, Bamako.
Last month, al-Qaeda fighters seized a Swiss missionary living there and set conditions for her release.

Eritrean men have been asked by the government to marry more than one wife or risk being jailed for life.
This is contained in a statement in Arabic by the Grand Mufti (the highest official of religious law in the country) which scanned copy surfaced on social media sites on Thursday last week.
In the statement, Eritrea called for all men in the country to marry at least two wives and the government assured the men that it would pay for the marriage ceremonies and houses.
According to the government, the order is because there is an acute shortage of men occasioned by causalities during the civil war with Ethiopia.
Afkinsider.com said the document, which could not be independently verified, warned that any man or woman who opposes the decision “will face a life sentence”.

The Nigerian Army on Monday said it had arrested another suspected Boko Haram terrorist kingpin, Mr John Trankil, at Kasuwar Shanu area of Maiduguri.
Col. Tukur Gusau, the Media Coordinator, Operation Lafiya Dole, said this in a statement in Maiduguri.
“Troops of 7 Division Garrison Nigerian Army in Operation Lafiya Dole, made a remarkable progress by arresting a Boko Haram Terrorist kingpin, Mr John Trankil, at Kasuwar Shanu in Maiduguri metropolis.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect said that nine of them sneaked into Maiduguri armed with AK 47 assault rifle each and a Toyota Hilux vehicle laden with 20 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) meant to be detonated at some selected targets in the city,” he said.
“The Theater Commander Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj.-Gen. Yusha’u Abubakar, commended the efforts of the troops and renewed call for the troops and the public to be more vigilant and security conscious.
Gusau said that troops of the 21 Brigade of the army had also discovered and IED making factory along Bama-Gonin Kurmi within the outskirts of Bama town in Borno.

Afgan Woman Stoned To Death For "Adultery"

A young Afghan woman was stoned to death after being accused of adultery, officials said Tuesday, a medieval punishment apparently recorded in a video that harks back to the dark days of Taliban rule.

The 30-second clip run in Afghan media shows a woman in a hole in the ground as turbaned men gather around and hurl stones at her with chilling nonchalance.

The woman, named by officials as Rokhsahana and aged between 19 and 21, is heard repeating the shahada, or Muslim profession of faith, her voice growing increasingly high-pitched as stones strike her with sickening thuds.

The killing took place about a week ago in a Taliban-controlled area just outside Firozkoh, the capital of central Ghor province, officials said, confirming the video which was sourced and released by international broadcaster Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

"Yes, the footage shown in the media is related to Rokhsahana, who was stoned to death," a spokesman for Ghor's Governor Seema Joyenda said.

Rokhsahana was stoned by a gathering of "Taliban, local religious leaders and armed warlords", Joyenda said.

Joyenda, one of only two female governors in Afghanistan, said Rokhsahana's family had married her off against her will and that she was caught while eloping with another man her age -- seen as tantamount to adultery.

The man was let off with a lashing, Joyenda's spokesman said.

The brutal punishment meted out to Rokhsahana highlighted the endemic violence against women in Afghan society, despite reforms since the hardline Taliban regime fell in 2001.

- 'Conservative attitudes' -

In March a woman named Farkhunda was savagely beaten and set ablaze in central Kabul after being falsely accused of burning a Koran.

The mob killing triggered protests around the country and drew global attention to the treatment of Afghan women.

Joyenda condemned the stoning in Ghor, calling on Kabul to launch a military operation to rid the area of insurgents and other armed groups.

Since her conception, Dr. Ada has been placed under medical surveillance to ensure a hitch-free birth. Upon birth, the baby, who weighs 9 pounds and 1 ounce, has been certified Ebola-free.

US Doctor Convicted in Overdose Deaths of 3 Patients

A Los Angeles-area doctor was convicted Friday of second-degree murder in the deaths of three patients who overdosed on painkillers she prescribed.

The prosecution of Dr. Hsiu-Ying "Lisa" Tseng was a rare murder case against a physician at a time when prescription drug abuse has become an epidemic and lawmakers have tried to make it harder for so-called pill mills to easily dole out medications with little scrutiny.

A dozen of Tseng's patients died, including one who overdosed in her office. Prosecutors only brought three murder charges because of other factors involved in some of those deaths, such as drugs prescribed by other doctors and a possible suicide.

Tseng, 45, was convicted of all but one of 21 drug-related counts. She showed no reaction as the verdicts were being read.

She was also charged with illegally writing prescriptions for two of the deceased patients and 16 other people, including three undercover agents who were investigating whether she easily prescribed pain pills after brief office visits.

Tseng prescribed "crazy, outrageous amounts of medication" to patients who didn't need the pills, Deputy District Attorney John Niedermann told jurors in Los Angeles County Superior Court. The doctor repeatedly ignored warning signs even after several patients died as she built a new medical clinic in Rowland Heights with the money she made from them.

"I know this is going to kill them, but I don't care because I have a business to run," Niedermann said in summing up the doctor's attitude.

"Something is wrong with what you're doing if your patients are dying," he said.

Tseng's lawyer said her client naively trusted her patients. Defense lawyer Tracy Green said patients testified they were legitimately in pain and later became dependent on the drugs, hiding their addictions by seeing other doctors and picking up prescriptions from different pharmacies.

Green conceded the doctor had provided a prescription to a patient's husband and said she should be convicted of that felony. However, Green said prosecutors had failed to prove that Tseng was guilty of anything else and should be cleared of the murder counts and drug charges.

"After she deals with punishment on that one count she can go home to her children," Green said.

Jurors had the option of convicting Tseng of involuntary manslaughter.

Vu Nguyen, 29, of Lake Forest, Steven Ogle, 25, of Palm Desert, and Joseph Rovero, 21, an Arizona State University student from San Ramon, died of overdoses between March and December 2009.

Tseng barely kept any records on the three men until she was contacted by the Medical Board of California. She then fabricated records to make it look like she kept thorough records of diagnoses and noted she was weaning them off drugs, Niedermann said.

Tseng ignored pleas from family members of patients who demanded she stop prescribing drugs to them, Niedermann said.

He said Tseng should have known her patients were prone to abuse because they were returning for refills before they should have run out of pills.

"If you give someone who claims to be a drug abuser the very drug they abuse and they overdose and die, that's a likely foreseeable outcome," Niedermann said. "But for her these people would not have died."

Undergraduate Killed Two Months To Wedding

Tragedy struck at Olorunfunmi Street in Oworo area of Lagos, on Thursday, following the murder of a 32- year-old man, Lawal Afolabi Kunbi, allegedly by a debtor, in a bid to evade repayment.
Kunbi, a business administration student of Lagos State Polytechnic, Isolo, reportedly received a telephone call from a private security guard, identified simply as Aliu, who lives on same street with him, to come and collect N32,000 owed him.
Sunday Vanguard gathered that the deceased, who owned a provision store, sold his motorcycle to Aliu, in order to raise money to pay his school fees, about a month ago.
However , after receiving the call, Kunbi dashed out of his shop to Aliu’s apartment, adjacent to his shop, obviously optimistic he would pay his school fees after all.
The unexpected
But, unknown to Kunbi, who was said to be preparing for his wedding in December, Aliu allegedly had a sinister motive up their sleeves. The bridegroom to be simply disappeared, forcing members of his family to conduct a search for him through out Thursday night.
The search party found the lifeless body of Kunbi around 9am on Friday behind Aliu’s compound, throwing the entire community into mourning. A source said the victim’s five fingers had been chopped off, while marks of violence were apparent all over his body. There also a rope tied round his neck, suggesting that he could have been strangled. The question on everyone’s lip was, who could have killed Kumbi?
Suspects arrested
Meanwhile, five suspects have been arrested by the police in connection with the incident. One of the suspects is Aliu.
Early that Friday, Aliu was allegedly seen fetching water from Kunbi’s compound. The number of times he went to fetch water reportedly arouse the curiosity of residents, necessitating the brave ones to ask what he was doing with the unusual volume of water he was fetching. Not satisfied with his explanation, some of the residents, it was learnt, forced their way into his apartment,where they allegedly discovered, to their shock, blood stains all over the place. The suspect was said to have been using the water to clean up the blood stains in his apartment, apparently to cover up his track. Also, shattered louvres were reportedly seen all over the apartment. Consequently, the residents descended on Aliu.
An eye witness said: “When we searched through Kunbi’s telephone, which he left while he rushed to answer the call of death last night (Thursday), we discovered that the last caller was Aliu. When confronted at first, Aliu denied seeing him, insisting rather that a search team be raised to look for him.
What gave him away was the blood stain that was trailed, right from where Kunbi’s body was dumped, to Aliu’s apartment. We also saw a white cloth stained with blood, on the floor and the key of Kunbi’s shop in Aliu’s apartment. When he discovered that the game was up, he pleaded that we should not kill him and disclosed that the plan to kill Kunbi was hatched by his friends”.

Husband Forces Wife To Have Sex With 2700 Men

A husband 'hired out’ his wife for sex with 2,742 different clients in just four years, a court heard on Thursday.

The 54-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, made the equivalent of more than £5000 a month through the suburban prostitution business.

As his wife, who is 46, welcomed clients, he would sit outside their home in Meaux, north of Paris, in the family car, along with their five-year-old child.

Emmanuel Dupic, prosecutor at the town’s criminal court, said: ‘The husband exercised a psychological power over his wife, preventing her from stopping submitting herself to the sexual needs of customers who were sometimes very tough.’

The couple, who have been married for 10 years, were arrested last Tuesday, but only the man was charged with pimping, and faces a decade in prison.

Prostitution is legal in France, but it is against the law to solicit for business. The man is said to have used four internet sites and text messages to organise clients for his wife.

He now faces a criminal trial, and has been released on bail.

Devalue Naira! IMF Urges Nigeria

The IMF is pressing Nigeria to further devalue its currency amid uncertainty over the political and economic outlook for Africa’s biggest oil producer and economy a news agency has reported. The report quoted Antoinette Sayeh, the International Monetary Fund’s Africa Director who had alleged that restrictions placed on 41 items access to foreign exchange was “quite detrimental saying that in Nigerians they “are already making it harder for the average person to buy milk,” at the IMF annual meeting that ended in Peru two weeks ago.
But Mrs Antoinette Sayeh openly avoided Nigeria reporters who asked her to name one country in the world that export crude and import refined products. She was also not forth coming when asked to name one country that would import anything that could be produced locally. Her assertion that it was becoming difficult for Nigerians to buy milk in the open market did not go down well with those who are familiar with the Nigerian situation at the Africa region press briefing.
She called for a review of the restrictions and for officials to “permit the exchange rate to continue to adjust.”
Nigeria’s Central Bank devalued the naira by 8 per cent in November and then fixed the official exchange rate at N198 to the dollar, though it sells at N222 at exchange bureaus. The Central Bank has defended the naira by restricting access to foreign currency for 41 items that could be produced locally.
The International Monetary Fund IMF at the same annual meeting said that Exchange-rate devaluation which countries normally use during financial crisis could cause adverse effect on countries economy. In its World Economic Outlook released in Lima, Peru, it said: “Exchange-rate depreciation has generally been a useful buffer for countries experiencing growth slowdowns – and has already been substantial – but could cause adverse balance-sheet effects where there is foreign-currency borrowing”.
In his opening remark at the World Economic Outlook Press Conference Mr. Maurice Obstfeld IMF chief economist said “No single set of policy prescriptions is suitable for every country seeking to improve growth performance or build resilience.”

An 80-year-old arms peddler, Madam Comfort Izeomwen, has been arrested and paraded by the Edo State Police Command.
The octogenarian was arrested following the arrest of her alleged accomplice, Stella Omobude, 48, who was caught with 32 live cartridges by the police.
Edo State Police Commissioner, Chris Ezike, who paraded the suspects along with 71 other suspects, said based on credible information, operatives/tactical units of the command raided Evbueren village, along Benin/Auchi road, where Stella was arrested.
Her confessions led to the arrest of the octogenarian at Ekae village, Benin City, with 68 live cartridges recovered from her.
Ezike disclosed that a mop-up operation also led to the arrest of Monday Obaseki and Ita Ehiozefe, aged 38 and 40 respectively.
Speaking with journalists at the command headquarters, the octogenarian suspect confessed that she sold each cartridge to her customers at the rate of N250.
“I sell to them at N250, but I don’t know what they do with it. That is what I do for a living,” she confessed.
