Sip, Shop & Stroll

The arrival of spring means the return of our monthly Sip & Stroll! Sip, shop & stroll through the Village and enjoy special sales, promotions, events, tasty treats and sips in participating shops and restaurants. The event will be held the 3rd Thursday of the month in March, April and May from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Participating businesses and promotions for March will be listed online soon.

Foodie Alert: Dine Your Way Through the Village

Freshfields Village offers a variety of places to check out on your next date night or day with the family. From Mexican to sushi and things in between, you are sure to find a place that will satisfy even the pickiest eater.

Plan Ahead for Spring Festival Week

Mark your calendars for our annual Spring Festival Week! April 10-12, we will celebrate with daily events throughout the weekend, including live music, a family-friendly festival and casual Easter Service.

The spring edition of Music on the Green takes place Friday, April 10 with live music from 6 to 9 p.m. featuring Java Band. The concert is family-friendly and free to attend. Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets. On Saturday, April 11, the annual Spring Festival takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a variety of fun activities including inflatable games, face painting, balloon animals, spring-themed crafts, an interactive live band performance, Easter Bunny photos and “Spring into Safety” with the St. Johns Fire Department. Round out the weekend with a non-denominational Easter Sunday Service on the Village Green at 9:30 a.m. The service will be casual, and guests are encouraged to bring their own blankets and chairs.

Balance & New Beginnings at STUDIO 33

Join STUDIO 33 for a Sacred Beads Mala Workshop on Thursday, March 19 from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. Welcome the Spring Equinox and its gifts of balance and new beginnings with an afternoon of mala beading. Explore the yogic tradition of these simple strands of beads used for counting prayers, mantras, intentions, or breaths. Jasmine will guide you through the history and technique of mala creation, from intention setting to choosing stones and everything in between. Make your own mala to take home, and also enjoy some light movement and meditation during the class. The workshop is $30 in advance or $35 at the door.

Kiawah and Seabrook support Mt. Zion Schools and needs your help

On Tuesday, August 18, the 2014-15 school year begins for Mt.
Zion Elementary students on Johns Island. Like so many others of our Island
neighbors, the teachers and students at Mt. Zion face many challenges. And 
just as they have done in the past, Kiawah and Seabrook Islanders, along 
with property owners at Cassique and Kiawah River Estates, will help them 
turn these challenges into opportunities.
 
The donations collected over the years have enabled the Support
Mt. Zion Kids fund to purchase Smart Boards (electronic white boards) before 
 they were provided by the district, as well as provide school uniforms for
students in need, computerized learning programs, support for the Accelerated 
 Reading program (which helps students at or below grade level to improve 
their reading skills), and provide materials and supplies which teachers 
need on a daily basis.
 
During the course of this past year, we also distributed many of
the school supplies donated in previous years. Even so, we still have pencils, 
 erasers, and loose-leaf paper for the upcoming year. However, a number of 
the “staples” we provide need to be replenished.
 
Because of these needs, we - are asking for your generosity 
 to take one of two forms: (1) by donating some of the supplies listed below 
or (2) by providing monetary donations. We will use the funds we collect to
purchase additional supplies and uniforms as needed throughout the school 
year.  
Needed supplies include:
•   Crayons (24 pack)
•   School uniforms (red or white shirts and khaki or navy pants)
•   Washable magic markers
•   Construction Paper and art supplies
•   1/2 inch and 1 inch White Avery Binders

Please provide your donations as soon as you can.  South Carolina's 2014 
tax-free shopping dates have not yet been announced. However, based on last 
year's dates, it is likely South Carolina's tax-free holiday will be August 
1-3, 2014.  
 
In addition to the school supplies we provide to Mt. Zion
students, Kiawah and Seabrook Islanders have provided more than 1,000 hours 
per year by serving as volunteers in the classroom. You need not have teaching 
 experience, only a willingness to help the students in our local schools. 
This assistance may be for an hour a week or an entire day – however much 
the Mt. Zion students and their teachers will appreciate time you are able 
to give. Just talk to your friends and neighbors who have donated their time 
and they will tell you how rewarding an experience it is! If you are interested 
in helping out in the classroom, mentoring a student, tutoring students or 
reading to classes.
 
Another way we can help the students at Mt. Zion is through
shopping at Harris Teeter. At the beginning of the school year, ask the 
cashier at checkout to enter school number 3455 into the register. By doing 
so, a portion of what you spend is donated to Mt. Zion Elementary each time 
you shop and purchase “Together in Education” items. If you have an 
Office Depot credit card, please inform the sales associate at the register 
to credit Mt. Zion Elementary. Office Depot will also credit Mt. Zion with 
5% of any purchases you make – whether or not they are school supplies. 
The school ID# for Mt. Zion is 70090775, and this program is in effect all 
year long. Staples also has a rewards program for its purchases, as well as 
a teacher rewards program. Finally, if you have a Target credit card, you 
can register on the Target web site for Mt. Zion Elementary. These businesses 
donate a portion of sales dollars to local schools.

Latest information about Flood Insurance in South Carolina

News from Representative Mark Sanford

Over the last couple of months, I’ve been hearing a lot of concern from back home about the changes to flood insurance as a result of the Biggert-Waters Act of 2012. Given recent action on this front, I wanted to write and update you on what is happening.

Last week the House passed H.R. 3370, the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act, which I voted for and cosponsored. Similar legislation has already passed the Senate, so the next step will be to merge the House and Senate bills, in what is called a conference report, before it goes to the President. While we wait to see what that final bill looks like, I want to share several thoughts on what the House passed legislation does, and the way it impacts individuals who were hit with sudden cost increases from Biggert-Waters.

First, H.R. 3370 repeals the automatic insurance rate increase that comes with selling a property under Biggert-Waters. Basically Biggert-Waters said you couldn’t sell a home and maintain the current, or grandfathered, insurance rate, meaning buyers suddenly had to absorb the new full rate which in many cases was a 10 or 15 fold increase. H.R. 3370 fixes this problem by mandating that the insurance policy stays with the property, regardless of the homeowner. Many people have flagged this as a needed fix to me because the rate hikes at time of sale were scaring off homebuyers.

Second, this bill fixes the problem with Biggert-Waters where individuals would see premium increases based off flood maps that hadn’t yet been drawn. I ultimately decided to co-sponsor the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act because the Biggert-Waters legislation that passed last year, while well intended, was flawed in this regard. I wasn't there during its passage, but in this case you had a bill that put the cart before the horse. It allowed government to set new premiums now and charge more without disclosure of how they were deriving their new rates.

The frequency and size of storms, and even details like whether or not they anticipate a high or low tide at landfall make for real differences in calculating hypothetical damage that go straight to impacting premiums that will be charged. As a conservative it seems reasonable to say why and how, when government just says ‘trust me,’ and the degree to which the original bill was flawed was highlighted by the fact that even Rep. Maxine Waters cosponsored this bill that amended her bill. A ‘time-out’ and delaying implementation of Biggert-Waters accordingly made sense to me.

H.R. 3370 instead uses current flood maps to gauge increases. This seems reasonable since they are the flood maps that now exist, and for primary residences premium increases are limited to between 5 and 18% per year. This change, which amounts to a delay, will allow individuals to see why and how their premium is being calculated and also gives them more time to adjust to their changing insurance premiums. For second homes and businesses the increases will be limited to 25% a year, again based on the current maps. Some I have talked to wish it was less, and to this I would say it is much less than the several hundred or thousand percent increases some folks were already seeing in flood insurance premiums.

Third, it refunds those policyholders who paid the increases from Biggert-Waters right off the bat. Those that bought a home and took on large premium increases will be refunded the difference between the higher amount they paid and the previous flood insurance rate. The same situation applies for people that kept their homes and chose to pay the higher rates to keep their coverage. Additionally, those who allowed their flood insurance policies to lapse will be able to pick them back up again at the previous rate.

Lastly, H.R. 3370 covers the costs of fixing Biggert-Waters, in comparison with the Senate version of the bill, which has no offset to pay for these changes. This means that taxpayers far from flood zones are not on the hook for a slower approach to reforming the National Flood Insurance Program in the way they would be with the Senate bill. The bill covers the cost by charging ratepayers a $25 yearly fee for primary residences and a $250 yearly fee for second homes and businesses. Concurrently, the increases in premiums are intended to help in moving the system to a rate that is closer to actuarially sound, and thereby not add to the National Flood Insurance Program’s $24 billion liability.

While change is certain to come for the flood insurance program, it needs to be done in a manner that gives markets and people the ability to respond and plan. As Governor, my administration worked to reform government so that it was less burdensome on the taxpayer, whether at the Department of Transportation, the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Department of Corrections or others, so I certainly hear and understand the voices of those calling for changes to the National Flood Insurance Program. But you can’t solve the problem overnight, especially when it involves considerable financial exposure for the individual who, through no fault of their own, has relied on promises government has made in the past. I think H.R. 3370 strikes a balance in the way it helps correct some of the unintended problems that have resulted from Biggert-Waters and still begins the process of reform.

Please forgive the long winded nature of this email, but given all I have heard from folks along the coast on this I wanted to relay what I have come to learn on this measure. I hope this information is helpful.

"Great news for lobster lovers. We can now get live Maine lobsters at Sidi's
Rosebank Farms Market. Per the owner, they have their own boat in Maine and overnight the lobsters down here - no middleman. We tried them and they were some of the freshest and best tasting we have had in years. The good news is they were only $8.95 per pound! They said they would be there during the Labor Day weekend. So, if you have a craving for lobster, give them a try."

"We also had them last weekend and they were fabulous! If enough people use them, they will also add steamers and other stuff."

This came in 5/16/14. "I stopped by both locations (Rosebank Farms and US17/Main Road Farmers

Market) and find that lobsters are available again. Chuck at Rosebank saysthat they will be there on Fridays (hours flexible, but now 2-5)and Saturdays(late morning until they run out), but they could change in the future.Lobsters should be available at the other location all the time, as it nowhas a live tank. Pricing this year is a bit more than last, but Chuck saysthat they should decline as the summer catch increases. If you don't wantto go out of the way, Chris at the Farmers Market answers on 442-9281. MaineLine Lobster's number is 735-8959, but I've called it a few times today, andnobody answers nor is there an answering machine. Mentioned this to Chuck,who says that they've been having problems with their phone.Bon appetite!"

If you live on Kiawah Island or Seabrook Island, chances are you have dirty windows. The beauty of the island continually contributes to the yucky film that will cover your windows many times a year. Here are some suggestions for window cleaners on the island.

Whether you live on the island full time or are just visiting for a week or two during the year, sometimes you may need some medical assistance. Here you will find a pletheria of recommendations for a variety of doctors and conditions.

Let's start off with a wonderful doctor that is located right on the island, Dr. Michael Book. His office is located next to the Market at East Beach. He can be reached at 768-0888. He can treat just about anything and anyone from children to adults.

Knee Doctor. " I had Dr. McCrosson due my knee replacement, He is with Roper downtown , his number is 789-1850. Good luck" "Same here. Two years ago. I understand he does more knee replacements than any other knee surgeon in the SC."

Dermatologists "After having trekked downtown for years, I went to Dr. Tom Meyers on Folly Road near its intersection with Maybank Hwy this week for the first time. He recently relocated to Kiawah from Virginia and has a new practice. My wife had been to him previously this year and liked him. He is excellent with a new office, convenient parking and a nice professional staff. Because he is relatively new to the area, he is also more readily available than most. About Village Dentistry: " I haven't tried both but certainly think that Dr. Haille is a very thorough, conscientious and nice dentist. He's very willing to make me as comfortable as possible. I have been going to him for 6 years as has my husband. His integrity is impeccable. I'm sure that Dr. Cohen is equally good or they wouldn't be partners. We're lucky to have them both so close by! I highly recommend them!"

"Our family has been going to Dr. Haile since he first arrived, before Dr. Cohen joined the practice. I can't compare the two since I haven't seen Dr. C but I can highly recommend Dr. Haile and would call him "gentle" and very personable, as well. Once he came in during off hours to finish a crown
before I left the country. The staff are all great and I think the office, in general, goes above
and beyond the usual routine in order to treat and care for a mobile Kiawah community. The hygienist once re-arranged her lunch schedule so I could attend a Christmas party."

Quentin Miller Memorial Golf Tournament

The tournament proceeds will benefit the First Tee of Charleston and celebrate the life of Quentin Miller, beloved employee of the Seabrook Country Club, an avid golfer who loved kids and embodied their loving and open spirit.
The Miller family and The Seabrook Island Country Club staff have organized the event with the help of the First Tee to celebrate Quentin's life and to also reflect upon Quentin's legacy- never take life too seriously because "Everything is Alright Forever- just let go and feel only intense gratitude and love in the present moment.”

Easter Week Activities at Freshfields Village

Here are some of the wonderful activities at Freshfields Village during the Easter Week Holiday. Freshfields Village does such a great job providing activities that the entire family can enjoy. Be sure to bring a blanket or some chairs to enjoy the day's events. There will be food and beverages to purchase at the Village and don't forget to save some time to shop.

FREE SPRING CONCERT SERIES AND EASTER FESTIVITIES KICK OFF EVENT SEASON

Kick off the spring season at Freshfields Village, the shopping and dining destination located at the crossroads of Kiawah, Seabrook and Johns islands with a family-friendly line-up of events. A free Spring Concert Series will be offered Fridays (March 22, March 29, and April 5) on the Village Green. Celebrate Easter at the annual Easter Festival on Saturday, March 30 with a variety of activities for the whole family to enjoy. Finally, take part in an uplifting, non-denominational Easter service on the Village Green on Sunday, March 31.

Groove to beach music, Motown, Top 40, rock and more at our Spring Concert Series on three Fridays from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the Village Green. Food and beverage will be available for purchase. Guests are encouraged to bring a beach chair or blanket.

March 22- Port Authority is a dynamic quartet performing shag, funk, rock & roll, Motown, ‘60s and ‘70s hits.
March 29- The Local Motion Party Band will perform music in styles ranging from beach, Motown, R&B, dance and popular music from the ‘60s to today.
April 5- Chris Crosby Group is a band with a unique sound and diverse music styles, including acoustic, folk, jazz, rock, country, beach and Motown.

Celebrate Easter on the sea islands at the annual Easter Festival Saturday, March 30 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Children’s activities such as a jump castle, inflatable slide, face-painting and Easter crafts will be available, as will interactive performer, John Cusatis, who will form a band with members from the audience, so come prepared for lots of dancing and singing. Plus, the Easter Bunny will be hopping through the Village for photos. Artwork from the Kiawah and Seabrook Artists guilds and boats from Barrier Island Marine, Butler Marine of Charleston, Hall Marine Charleston, and Longshore Boats will be on display. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Wrap up the holiday weekend at an Easter Service Sunday, March 31 at 9:30 a.m. on our Village Green. The Calvary of the Sea Islands Church will lead the service. Please bring a chair or blanket.

Coyotes, The Newest Island Resident

Kiawah Island is home to many wonderful and exciting creatures. It is a magical place that one can sit on a back porch and watch alligators in the water, while the deer and bobcats scamper through the marsh. The Egrets and Herons show off their magnificent fishing skills and acrobatics in the air. Now, a new resident is very apparent on the island. Coyotes can be be heard in the dark moving through the thick forest. Just like the alligators and bobcats, coyotes must be shown some respect and healthy caution.

This is apparently an emerging problem. Back in October, a few of us contacted the specialist on the island, Jim Jordan. He offered this explanation:

Coyotes on Kiawah Island
Yes, there are coyotes on Kiawah Island. The first coyote was seen on Kiawah Island more than 5 years ago and numbers appear to have increased in the last year. Coyotes are not native to South Carolina and historically were found only west of the Mississippi River. Coyotes were first seen in
the Upstate of South Carolina in 1978 and can now be found in all 46 South Carolina counties.

Coyotes are typically grayish or reddish-brown in color and have the general appearance of a small shepherd-type dog. They have slim muzzles, erect pointed ears, and a bushy tail. They stand 23-26 inches high at the shoulder and weigh between 25-40 pounds. Contrary to popular belief, coyotes do not form packs. They are typically solitary or can be found in pairs. A group of coyotes, larger than 2, is likely a family group in which the young have not yet dispersed. Coyotes are omnivorous and will eat a wide variety of prey items, including: muscadine grapes, persimmons, rodents, rabbits, and deer fawns.

Coyotes often howl and bark at dusk and during nighttime hours. This is a sound which residents can expect to hear on the island. Coyotes vocalize in order to communicate with one another. They typically do this to call other members of the family group back together or to let other coyotes
know that this is their territory.

Coyotes and people
Coyotes are not a threat to people. Coyotes have a natural fear of people and will not approach people unless they have been accustomed to being fed. Never feed coyotes or leave pet food outdoors after dark.

Coyotes and pets
On occasion, coyotes will prey on unattended domestic pets. Pet predation is usually due to the territorial nature of the coyote or a lack of available prey. Keep unattended pets indoors after dark. If you encounter a coyote while walking your dog, make plenty of noise and raise your arms to be sure the coyote is aware of your presence. You should also keep your leashed pet as close to you as possible or pick up your pet if it is small enough to easily do so.

Controlling coyote numbers
Coyotes are a non-native species that will compete with our native gray foxes and bobcats for food and habitat. In a perfect world, we would remove all the coyotes from the island. Unfortunately, this is not a viable option. Coyotes are very intelligent and difficult to trap or shoot and it would be impossible to eradicate them from the island. Town Biologists are monitoring the increase in coyote numbers and evaluating potential options for control. Coyote numbers are also naturally controlled by diseases, such as canine distemper, parvo, and mange.
