Here's what Heinz Hermanns, CEO of Interfilm Berlin had to say about short films during a recent Friday afternoon visit to Hot Sun Foundation in Kibera, Nairobi.

Audience: with short films it is easier to find audience. There's more of a potential market. Interfilm shows short films in 20 cities in Germany The other large market: France For the market: shorter films are best: 5 - 15 min. 7 min to show before feature film in cinemas, 90 seconds in subways or other public place.

In Kenya: Educate your audience: need to develop an audience for short films

Suggest: short film festival or quarterly short films screening. People must spread the word about seeing great short films.

Any place that people gather, shopping center, medical clinic, railroad station, bus stop, public transport is a potential market for showing short films. In Berlin Germany and Seoul Korea there are 90 second short films on the subways.

A DAY WITH AN INTERNATIONAL ACTRESS AT KIBERA FILM SCHOOL

It was 11^th May 2013 on a Saturday morning. Kibera Film School was a beehive of activities. From trainers, trainees, interns, coordinators and visitors no one dared to be left behind. The excitement in the air however did not surpass my imagination and dire need to see the much anticipated and talked about woman; Caroline Goodall, who was coming that morning.

Born in Britain to Australian parents, Caroline Goodall is internationally known as a leading actress who has starred in some of the biggest blockbusters of the last fifteen years, including Schindler's List (1993), Hook (1991), Cliffhanger (1993), Disclosure (1994), White Squall (1996) and The Princess Diaries (2001), The White queen-TV Series (2013), CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2005). She is a graduate of Bristol University where she gained a Bachelor of Arts Hons. In Drama and English, and studied alongside other notable screenwriters such as Jeremy Brock (Mrs. Brown). As a writer, in addition to "The Bay of Silence" for Radiant Pictures, credits include screen adaptations of Rupert Thomson's "Dreams Of Leaving" for HKM Films.

Caroline brought us some of her films. The films were really amazing. From her work on acting she advised and said that filmmaking is not about moneymaking but passion is everything. That has been her driving force all along.

“Is that kissing real”? A classmate asked her after watching a scene where Caroline was kissing a man. “ Of course it’s real. As a professional actress everything you do is professional. It’s your job to make a movie appear real," she calmly and jokingly answered. Her seriousness and humor was coupled up by her great personality. I think that the video of her visit would make a scene in a movie!

“Never ever walk away on set as an actor just because you disagree with a director. Make the director feel that you are not just an actor but also part of the production by telling him on how you feel you can deliver your lines,” she concluded as she offered to buy us lunch and promising to connect Hot Sun Foundation to the outside world after seeing the amazing work done by Kibera TV.

Caroline was overjoyed and promised to come back again.

It takes a lot to write to begin with internet connection.
Enough about me, i want to entirely dedicate the whole of this post to Hot Sun Foundation. So today is my last day of attachment in Hot Sun but that doesn’t mean i won’t be around if needed. For those who don’t know about Hot Sun Foundation i might drop a hit after another as i proceed.

Thank you Hot Sun Foundation for giving me a chance to horn my skills in my field. It has been a priviledge and most of all a humbling two months experince of my life. I’ve met a lot of nice people during my stay and hope i was of help to the foundation. I loved the fact that i got to meet people who are in the industry with vast knowledge in montoring,scripting and social networking.

Hot-sun foundation socially transforms through media and art. It’s branched into Kibera Film School, Hot-sun productions and Kibera TV. It is a foundation that is giving a chance to young filmmakers to practice hand-on filmmaking in the heart of Kibera.

I know i have said alot of thanks but i again thank you so much for this opportunity. I meant alot to me. I can never be more than this grateful.

Learning How To Tell A Story.

There is no reason why challenging themes and engaging stories have to be mutually exclusive, for sure as I learnt from my scriptwriting instructor each can fuel the other. As an aspiring filmmaker, I want to entertain people as much as I can. I learnt about the transformational ARC structure in screenplay writing. If from my films I create awareness and understanding of a time and circumstance, then the hope is that change can happen. This is what I learnt at Kibera film school.

At Kibera Film School, I learnt the rules in filmmaking and now daily I break them to suit my creativity.

The unique hands-on training at Kibera Film School you get to interact with industry filmmakers and get a chance to work on professional film sets.

It was a cold chilly Wednesday morning when I joined kibera film school as a student. Just before pushing the gate I remembered when I came for the graduation ceremony a few months ago, and how I envied the grandaunts in their gowns, each of their faces beaming with pride, joy and a certain determination smile ready for the world. And now my time has come.

With a long sigh I pushed the gate and went to the reception area where I met Aida the main coordinator of K.F.S. Aida is a strong warm hearted woman who is always ready to assist anyhow, with no time to waste she led me to my class introduced me and as she left she pated my back perhaps it was her way of saying good luck.

In class I got acquainted with the other students, there are seven students and each of them has a passion for the film industry, highly positive charged people who make studying a simple and fun yet constantly motivating one another.

On this morning we were being taught how to use different equipment by our videography trainer, who took time in explaining and showing how to correctly mount a camera onto a tripod, how to connect mac minis. Each time one of us does something wrong during the practical trainer will ask us to re-do the procedure again till each one of us got it right.

That afternoon started off the “Social Wednesdays” by Mrs. Pamela Collett who is a founder and a trustee of the K.F.S. Pamela teaches us on the importance of social networking and the benefits of networking if done correctly.

My script writer teacher Miss Flo is a soft-spoken woman who loves writing. Her style of teaching is modern and makes the lessons interesting by explaining to us using examples of the latest films. She encourages us to not just watch a film but take a keen interest on how each sequence relates to one another, and there importance in making it a successful film.

The Hot Sun Foundation where Kibera Film School is located also has Kibera TV an online TV station. I get to interact with the staffs that always have wise words to pass on. K.F.S has taught me how to stay focused, rubbing off the attitude of a well rounded person who is destined to be a winner. Each day in K.F.S I get to learn something new and practical lessons which would be hard for me to forget.

Sema Session with Tazim

Sema is the Swahili word for talk,and talking to Tazim Elkington is an experience to be treasured.

I remember the first time I met Tazim, when I was a trainee at Kibera Film School, I thought she was amazing. After the talk with her I went online and googled her and was amazed at how much content there was on her, websites describing her in many bold highlighted and sometimes even flowery words.

She has an amazing way of helping you realise yourself,your potential,face your fears,rise above the expectations that we and the people around us have for us.She is AMAZING!!!So any opportunity the Hot Sun Foundation has,we invite her to come mentor,counsel and unite.

On the 26th of March Tazim was gracious enough to visit us again and with her, she brought a friend Zawadi Nyong'o and daughter Natasha Elkington whom we enjoyed meeting and were a great addition to the Friends of Kibera Film School.

The talk was based on the self-improvement of the trainees and not just on a personal level but also on a professional level.The trainees have just cleared their classes and are headed out for internships and for some it was unclear where to start or how to start. Tazim took us through the following sub-topics that helped us all learn how to begin a new chapter in our life books with the help of the foundations we have built already.

True to her nature,Tazim made sure it was an interactive session with everyone opening up and giving input. During the talk,it is evident to see how different personalities are from how different we all see situations, how different our plans are, and how differently we are shaping our futures.

After our guests left the we all had these to say had the following to say about what they thought of what the discussion had exposed them to:

Josephat Keya: When I feel something I should express it and not deny it, because we are all on this planet to feel and understand.

Godfrey Chogo: Be outspoken and come out of my “shell”.

Martin Mwangi: Money is not the key to happiness.

Ali Yunus: I should not be afraid to fail. I'll never know if I never tried.

Ken Kibuthania: I should focus on myself and not what people think of me. My identity is dependent on what I think of myself.

Michael Mwangi: Learning how to be myself and staying strong, confident and learning how to still say no when I need to.

Grishon Onyango: You cannot expect someone to change you. Change should come from within.

Audrey Shihafu: I learnt that every person should appreciate themselves and make the best of what he or she has. You have your own authority.

Shirley Akinyi: You need to correct someone if they wrong you no matter their status in society.

Job Mureithi: Communication is key for one to know how you feel and tell what you want. There are many shifts in life but stay firm and constant.

Isaac Bade : As long as one pursues a goal in life implementing the different ideas and aspiration is much instrumental in achieving the desired result.

Anne Mwaniki: Our life is like a "dash board" we should be careful of what buttons we set to people to push.

Noreen Kombo: You have to let go of people who don’t add value to your life. I had been challenged by Tazim in her last visit. Here I am saying, yes it works.

"Nervous Of Everything But NOT Film", Joash Mageto.

Joash Mageto is a practicing cinematographer, who has graduated from Kibera Film School (KFS), KFS CLASS OF 2011. His passion is making short/feature length films and documentaries, both as a writer, director and cinematographer. His taste and entrance into the world of film began from his days as an investigative cameraman/journalist where his stories were re-edited until they lost meaning, on local TV stations.

He has shot tens of short films, a number of documentaries and been part as behind the scenes cinematographer, and production stills photographer to date.
His latest work is a series of short films he is fundraising on Indiegogo, to start shooting and they will be shot using Scarlet-x (4K), and 5D mac III.

He received an award of best short drama for the short film "The Inlaws" from slum Film festival, Nairobi in 2012. This documentary also won "Do you know the water you drink" during KUJ awards 200.

Currently he is a cinematography trainer, and in-charge of social networking at Kibera Film School.

Joash does what he does best,,,cinematography.

Joash says, "lots of things make him nervous but Film is not one of them, for i am sick for film"

Aristotle is not a Mexican. The central message of Buddism is not “every man for himself ” and filmmaking is not a man’s only field. That’s what we at Kibera Film school encourage and emphasize to our trainees.

Join us at Kibera film school and learn the art of cinematography as some say its nothing but the art of painting with light. Light can be gentle, dangerous, dreamlike, bare, living, dead, misty, clear, hot, dark, violet, falling, straight, sensual, limited, poisonous, calm and soft.

Not only cinematography but learn the craft of screenplay writing, photography, production directing with industry experts the likes of Serah Mwihaki, Wanjiru Kinyanjui and many others.

Trainees enjoy skype sessions with filmmakers from around the world. One on one coaching like recent visit by award winning Hollywood writer/producer/director Dwyane Johnson-Cochran

As Swedish legend Sven Nyquist, cinematographer says "The art of cinematography is nothing but the art of painting with light". But artistry apart, Cinematography is also a highly technical field. This you get from our training as its an intensive hands-on.

A good Cinematographer needs to know the behavior of light how its reflected/deflected, laboratory processing, the electronics of video cameras and the relation between shutter speeds, ISOs and apertures.

If ever there was a profession that did have a marriage ages ago of the arts and sciences, it is the profession of videography as some refer to it fondly as ‘cinematography’. It is the DOPs (Director of cinematography) who become the "eye" of the Director, transposing her/his vision into unequivocal images that leave indelible marks on our audiences/critics.

We at Kibera film school prepare our trainees to be able to do photography or videography in all kinds of shooting conditions, be it outside, studio based shoots or a combination of interior and outside lighting conditions.

We also train them to work as a team and be able to communicate with each other and understand requirements of any production. In order to achieve these we invite motivational speakers, industry experts, filmmakers, couch/counselors like Tazim Elkington every Friday.

As Sven Nyquist said “Light gives me a feeling of spiritual atmosphere. Light is with you –you do not have to feel you are alone.” We at Kibera film school are with you.

Kibera Film School embraces Citizen Journalism

Kibera Film School added another feather to it's cap as two people were selected for an intensive citizen journalism workshop at PAWA254 http://www.pawa254.org/

Noreen Kombo(Trainee at Kibera Film School) and Joash Mageto (Trainer) were selected for the three day Journalism workshop which was facilitated by Mr Roy Gichuhi an experienced Journalist in the Kenyan Media.

Mr.Gichuhi taught on the code of conduct for the practice of Journalism in Kenya,the new constitution in relation to Kenyan Media laws and professional writing.

The event was graced by Jackie Lebo,a Filmmaker,writer and photographer who showcased Gun to Tape- a documentary based on the pre-Olympic training activities of Kenyan athletes.As the Producer of the documentary she explained to us the challenges involved in making of the documentary and promised to visit us at Kibera Film School soon for a possible screening.

The Media Council of Kenya was also at hand to provide additional information for upcoming Journalists. http://www.mediacouncil.or.ke/

Kibera Film School and Community Cleaning Services (CCS) http://communitycleaningservices.org/ an emerging Kenyan nonprofit social enterprise teamed up last week in preparation for the World Toilet Day.
This is an international day of action celebrated annually on November 19th aiming to break the taboo around toilets and draw attention to the global sanitation challenge.http://www.worldtoiletday.org/index.php

The CCS team was in Kibera,Ayany estate primary school on a mission of cleaning 600 toilets in Nairobi by November 19th.
Elizabeth,a quality assurance professional at CCS was kind enough to take us through their community programme.The cleaning team from Mathare area had fun interacting with the trainees from Kibera Film School.

UK Creative comes back home

Nadeem Rajwani was born and raised in Kenya. He has worked in the advertising industry in Kenya and later branched out into film 10 years ago.
He is a seasoned screenwriter and Filmmaker having studied in Canada and currently based in the UK.Nadeem took us through his journey as a film student and why he is back home.After a lengthy discussion,he encouraged the trainees to pick up writing in addition to their favorite subjects at Kibera Film School.

Happy November to all our friends and supporters!
October was a busy month at Kibera Film School.The last quarter of the year seems to have brought good tidings to our school and the Kibera community in general.

We had the pleasure of hosting Mr Bjorn Maes the Programme Manager at Africalia.
Through its three-year programmes, Africalia supports professional organizations and networks in Africa that contribute to the flourishing of artists, that in turn play their social and societal role in strengthening democracies.
Mr.Maes came to check on the progress of the programmes being offered at Kibera Film School. He was impressed with our curriculum and our trainee projects including our recently concluded 'My World' short films.

The trainees challenged him to come another time as a volunteer at Hot Sun Foundation where he can be able to mingle freely and see how we live and work on a daily basis.Learn more about Africalia on:

We also hosted Mr Mathias Antonsson and his Kenyan colleague from GESCI as they were gathering information from different institutions on the use of ICT to promote Digital Media Arts in Kenya.
The Q&A session with the GESCI team and Kibera Film School trainees was a bit weird at first as their questions were technically formulated. We had some moments of silence and the questions had to be re phrased to simple English in order for them to get the right answers. The time was not enough for us to have in depth discussions but it was a meeting of creatives and ICT professionals which was worth our lunch break.

Many visitors are always surprised once they enter through our gates they do not know what to expect.We love to see their surprised faces when they learn we are just normal trainees at school doing what we love.
Our environment does not discourage us from being the best,instead it pushes us further to be the best class of Kibera Film School 2012.

When you come to Kibera Film School it’s not all work and no play. We have fun when inspiring people like Tazim Elkington or seasoned media personalities like Mr. Richard Crompton drop by.

Former Kibera Film School trainees working in the industry also encourage us when things get tough.

Volunteers,well wishers and donors always surprise us with equipment and offer free advice on film making.Some do not want to be recognized for their efforts as they do it out of love and not for recognition.In addition to our studies,we also attend random functions happening around Nairobi in relation to our training.

This month we attended the screening of PUMZI an award winning short film, written and directed by Wanuri Kahiu http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanuri_Kahiu

The event was hosted at PAWA254 a unique hub that houses, fosters and catalyzes creative and community-driven projects for social change across Kenya. http://www.pawa254.org
