As we enter the indigenous round of footy a thought I would do something different and pick winners for individual performances rather than games, and when I saw the odds for Tippo to kick the most goals I couldn’t resist.

Kurt Tippett will be the main man in attack with Walker out with Suspension, so my money is on him to be the leading goal kicker for the round.

Tippet hasn’t set the footy world on fire just yet after a good start to the year. In my opinion he is due for a big performance and with the AFL’s leading goal kicker and fellow Crows forward Taylor Walker (23 goals) missing via suspension Tippett will once again be the main vocal point up forward for the new and improved Adelaide team. Kurt has received a lot of criticism especially in Adelaide about his goal kicking and having the ‘yips’ when having a set shot. Pretty harsh if you ask me, every player in the competition has their moments in front of goals.

There’s no doubting the ability of the 203cm 107kg Queenslander and a return of 15 goals 14 from 7 games is pretty good. Not to mention that he ranks second in the AFL in contested marks with 17 at an average of 2.4 and has taken a respectable 18 marks inside forward 50.

He has shown in the past that he is capable of kicking multiple goals in a game and I can’t see why he won’t be able to do it again Sunday afternoon against Carlton, will it be enough to win the game for the Crows time will tell, but I do believe that Kurt Tippett is due for a big game and with no Walker this weekend’s game is perfect opportunity to do so.

Dane Swan to get the most possessions @$6.50

After a slowish start to the year by the 2011 Brownlow medallist standards Dane Swan has started to hit his stride in season 2012. After absolutely dominating ANZAC day Swanny hasn’t looked back. The Collingwood ball magnet is averaging an amazing 33.6 disposals per game 20.3 kicks and 13.3 handballs.

Collingwood have a huge game Friday night against the reigning premier Geelong in the Grand Final rematch and I hope that the coaches just let their midfields go head to head with no hard tags. If that’s the case we will see an epic battle between the game’s best talent. Week in and week out Swan is a proven ball magnet and it doesn’t seem to matter who the opponent is.

There’s is good reason why the tattooed magpie is the leading possession getter in the business with 235 disposals and I can’t see why the strong midfielder won’t have another standout game this week.

We migrated to a new server and it took longer than expected.

I loved how Round 7 was so even and we had the lesser sides defeating their higher fancied opponents in West Coast, Carlton, Geelong, Sydney, North etc. What it now means is that probably since the late 1990′s the race for the premiership is wide open.

Essendon vs Richmond in the annual Dreamtime at the G match. This match for the first time looks to be a game that will shape the finals.

Geelong to defeat Collingwood

I find it interesting it takes 8 weeks for a Grand Final rematch. Was the AFL hoping they would both be undefeated and this would be a cracker of a game between this years grand finalists? It will still be a cracker of a game but both teams are far from premiership contenders at the moment. Both have major injury and form concerns which could almost see the looser two games from the top four.

Geelong have really struggled winning the contested ball and I think Brad Ottens missing is one of the reasons, forget the question marks on their hunger for the contest.

Collingwood on the other hand now have serious questions on their depth. Who will win? It is pretty much a toss of a coin but I am going Geelong, why? Unsure but I think the Adelaide loss will sting them into some serious action.

North Melbourne to defeat Port Adelaide

Brad Scott can forget the ‘perform or I’ll drop you trick’, it has been done to death down at North Melbourne. The issue is the culture and that is what needs to be changed and I think the first thing that needs to happen is delist/ retire/ never play again McIntosh, Thomas, Harvey, Edwards and Wells. These players have always been inconsistent and when its not going their way, they sook and bring a bad influence to the future of the club. The club needs to cut throat!

In saying all that, you have to be silly to think Port could defeat a Melbourne side. Their best bet for a win is for an average side to go to Adelaide and under estimate them like St Kilda in round 1. Until then, each week the questions will be on Matthew Primus’s coaching future.

Hawthorn to defeat Fremantle

Who remembers that boring match between St Kilda and Hawthorn a few years ago played at the MCG where every player forgot where the goal posts were? Well I am tipping a similar match to be played as Ross Lyon learns that Fremantle are not the side everyone thinks they could be.

If the team ever clicks and Buddy learns how to kick, Rioli learns how to be consistent and Hodge stays injury free, you may as well hand the premiership cup over now. However seeing Fremantle struggle to even win after a flight to Melbourne let alone an extra one to Tasmania it will be a Hawthorn win.

Swans to defeat Melbourne

Sydney are lucky that they get to play Melbourne as all of a sudden they are now struggling and a general bye against the AFLs wiping boy will suit them fine to get them back into some sort of form.

I am glad to see Liam Jurrah back as the Demons do need something else up forward to sit next to Mitch Clarke. If you add Cloke to the forward line it will really suit the coaches game plan.

Essendon to defeat Richmond

Essendon fans are trying to keep their form quiet at the moment and its hard to do especially when you are equal on top and have beaten top teams already. However Richmond is another team that is on the rise and has pace to burn so this will be a game to watch.

Previous recent games between these teams have been so-so at best but this looks to be winner and could almost be the game of the round. I almost tipped Richmond as I think Essendon are on a high and one thing I have learned is that teams cannot stay there all season as the competition is so even. However purely on the fact that they smashed West Coast last week, I will be staying with Essendon.

Western Bulldogs to defeat Gold Coast

The Dogs are almost the best side outside the top 8 (including Geelong) and Gold Coast cannot even defeat GWS so this is a no brainer.

Brisbane to defeat GWS

GWS will be on a high but the question is did they play their grand final last week? Brisbane need a win as Michael Voss is coping a lot of flak but would a loss do the club a higher good if it causes Voss to be moved on?

Adelaide to defeat Carlton

I am going for an upset here! Carlton were average at best and is the key to defeat them roughing them up and sitting on Murphy and Simpson? Adelaide play a similar brand as what St Kilda did so Carlton better learn how to deal with it quick.

It is amazing how quick the Carlton fans have jumped off the coach and the club, however in saying that Ratten is very slow to make any changes on field, its either he does not think fast enough or is stubborn and will not budge from his plan.

Adelaide on the other hand is definitely the West Coast of 2012 and should continue with their good form.

West Coast to defeat St Kilda

West Coast’s injury woes are easing with Nic Nat, Schofield and Adam Selwood set to return. I expect Nic Nat to be mainly used down forward as Darling and Lynch have struggled since Kennedy has gone down with injury.

St Kilda were amazing against Carlton and with Standley, Saad and Milera playing all of a sudden they are a fast side – yes let us add it to “Ripleys Believe it or Not”.

Melbourne 6.13 (49) vs Hawthorn 15.25 (115)

Next Round: Sydney v Melbourne, Hawthorn v Fremantle

It was to be expected the Hawks crushing the Dees but a continuing sticking point for Hawthorn is their wastefulness in front of goals. Buddy Franklin personified this with his 3 goals 7 points and talent alone cannot get the Hawks over the line.

Liam Shiels was the Hawk’s best and Sam Mitchell battled hard all game.

Mitch Clarke kicked 3 goals for Melbourne, but time and time again the Demons really struggled to penetrate into their forward 50.

Adelaide defeat Geelong

Adelaide 19.8 (122) vs Geelong 10.12 (72)

Next Round: Carlton v Adelaide, Collingwood v Geelong

The first shock loss of the round, it was always going to be a tough match but a 50 point loss for Geelong was picked by very few. Not that Geelong were terrible but Adelaide were simply scintillating in an almost perfect game for them.

The Cats did have a few injuries pre-game - Jimmy Bartel (ankle) and Matthew Scarlett (thigh) and during - Tom Gillies (knee) and Allen Christensen (calf), that hampered any chance of a fightback.

Adelaide were terrific at the contested ball something Geelong have been lacking. Scott Thompson for the Crows dominated with 34 disposals, 17 clearances and seven tackles and was well supported by Rory Sloane.

Greater Western Sydney defeat Gold Coast

Greater Western Sydney 13.16 (94) vs Gold Coast 9.13 (67)

Next Round: Brisbane v Greater Western Sydney, Western Bulldogs v Gold Coast

Another upset of sorts with the Giants becoming the Giant Killers beating the slightly more experienced new kids Gold Coast, their first win in AFL by 27 points.

The GC had a four point lead at the last change but the Giants used a bit of home ground advantage to pull momentum their way. Jonathan Giles kicked 3 majors, Steve Coniglio was best on ground for 31 possessions and Chad Cornes was a wise old owl in defence.

Gary Ablett for the Suns coming back from a knee injury, still scraped together 33 disposals.

Richmond defeat Sydney

Richmond 13.13 (91) vs Sydney 8.14 (62)

Next Round: Essendon v Richmond, Sydney v Melbourne

Wow another upset of sorts, but in some ways there were signs like Sydney’s continual struggle at the MCG especially against of all teams Richmond ( the past 3 matches the Tiges were 3-0 ).

Jack Riewoldt kicked 4 goals for Richmond and Trent Cotchin had 27 disposals equalling Alex Rance.

The Swans are now on a 2 game losing streak while big improver Richmond, gain a lot of confidence going into a huge match against the Bombers.

Essendon defeat West Coast

Essendon 16.17 (113) vs West Coast 7.10 (52)

Next Round: Essendon v Richmond, West Coast v St Kilda

In the end West Coast dam had to burst, with mounting injuries to key players a talented but still maturing side caved to the pressure Essendon put on. The Bombers’ 61 point demolition handed the Eagles their first loss of season 2012.

Led by classy midfielder captain Jobe Watson and co conspirators David Zaharakis and Brent Stanton the Dons seem to get first bite of the cherry every time. it was a complete team game which was reflected in the shared spread of goals. ( Crameri 3, Davey 3, Jetta 2, Ryder 2, Stanton 2 ).

West Coast now face a Saints team buoyant after defeating Carlton, while the Bombers could be in for a lil’ challenge against an improving Richmond outfit.

Collingwood defeat Brisbane

Brisbane 8.10 (58) vs Collingwood 17.14 (116)

Next Round:Brisbane v Greater Western Sydney, Collingwood v Geelong

Collingwood were never in doubt to take the points in this match from the start they kicked 5 goals straight to no reply and that set the tone for the rest of the game. The only negative for the Pies was the injury to Nathan Brown who has made more comebacks than John Farnham.

The Pies have now won 4 straight and the signs are looking good with some solid work from their midfield showing the class that Collingwood still have. Dane Swan ( 34 disposals, 2 goals) and Scott Pendlebury (33) were sublime.

A great rematch of last year’s GF awaits with Geelong needing to rebound from a shattering loss against the Pies.

Western Bulldogs defeat North Melbourne

North Melbourne 12.11 (83) vs Western Bulldogs 15.11 (101)

Next Round: Port Adelaide v North Melbourne, Western Bulldogs v Gold Coast

North Melbourne after reaching the highs of a win of Geelong and some strong performances since, hit a stumbling block in the form of the Bulldogs. The Dogs simply outran the Kangas and capitilised on Norths’ errors to run out 18 point winners.

Tory ‘Who?’ Dickson kicked 4 goals for the Western Bulldogs, Big Brian Lake led in defense and Matthew Boyd amassed a lazy 44 disposals.

Hamish McIntosh for the Roos, went down with a knee injury but it isn’t thought to be as serious as first expected.

Fremantle defeat Port Adelaide

Fremantle 12.15 (87) vs Port Adelaide 7.5 (47)

Next Round: Hawthorn v Fremantle, Port Adelaide v North Melbourne

Fremantle rebounded from some average performances in the last 2 weeks to record a 40 point hiding of Port Adelaide highlighted by champion forward Matthew Pavlich‘s 500th goal.

It wasn’t exactly pretty football from the Dockers with inaccuracy in front of goal giving Power still a chance of victory right up until the final siren. Stephen Hill was let loose and relished the opportunity with 26 touches.

Midfielder John McCarthy (30 disposals) was Port Adelaide’s best. Next round Fremantle will face off against Hawthorn which could turn out to be a high point scoring (not goal scoring) affair.

St Kilda defeat Carlton

St Kilda 19.8 (122) vs Carlton 14.14 (98)

Next Round: West Coast v St Kilda, Carlton v Adelaide

What a way to end the round with the Saints causing an upset to defeat Carlton by 24 points last Monday. Both teams were fired up and there was a bit of argy bargy, but St Kilda surprisingly looked the more aggressive on the scoreboard and in attack.

Stephen Milne kicked 4 goals and a stellar midfield ( Brendon Goddard, Farren Ray, Leigh Montagna and Lenny Hayes ) outplayed the Blues. Clint Jones did a number on Marc Murphy and Eddie Betts was quiet for his 2 goals for Carlton.

A huge game for both teams next round. Can the Saints capitalise on another West Coast lull? The Blues face a mamoth task against Adelaide who just keep getting better.

Last night we had the St Kilda/ Carlton Monday night game and from a non-Victorian point of view I enjoyed it and I can only assume everyone in footy mad Melbourne enjoyed it.

As I was listening to the ABC telecast on my way home speeding so I can watch as much as possible at home, former Melbourne player and ex Fremantle coach Chris Connelly made a through away comment that it would be good if these Monday night games were played during School Holidays.

Now this makes sense!

Everyone travels during school holidays and how awesome would it be for AFL buffs if they could go to five games during the week?

What do you think about the concept of having Monday night games during the School Holidays? Last night we saw 40 odd thousand and I am sure we could see at least another 5-10,000 fans if the game is played between two performing Victorian teams.

Collingwood to defeat Bulldogs

Forget the tip, the focus this Friday night is the fact that the Doggies supporters have been shafted in favour of the Collingwood supporters who get the best seats.

Essendon to defeat Brisbane

Essendon are in good form while Brisbane are in average form, so its a fairly easy tip. For Brisbane to win, Jonathan Brown needs to kick 8 and the young kids of Rockliff, Redden and Rich need to get on top of the Essendon’s midfield.

Geelong to defeat Melbourne

Last time they meet Geelong got a good training run with an almost 200 point win. While Geelong are not in the same form and in fact average form at best they should still get a good training run.

No surprise to see Jack Watts dropped, I wonder if Nic Naitanui would still be the same player he is if Melbourne picked him up at #1 instead of Watts?

Fremantle to defeat Gold Coast

Smart move resting Sandilands for another week as there is no point him traveling all the way to the Gold Coast if he is 80% or even 90% fighting fit. May as well give him an extra week as Fremantle need him dominating if Fremantle are to make the top 8 this week.

I wonder who Ryan Crowley will tag with no Ablett? David Swallow is my bet, maybe its for the best that Ablett is not playing so Karmcihael Hunt would not have to protect him. He has been brutal!

Sydney to defeat Adelaide

Today I hear Adelaide being called ‘pretenders’, is that fair? At first I though no but when I heard why he thought that I agreed as they have only defeated teams in the bottom six of the current ladder. However if they can defeat Sydney, that tag will be removed.

So can they? Well miracles do happen and did we see a mini miracle last week when Sydney turned a 3 goal half time deficit and turned it into a 37 point win at full time? What scares me about Sydney is the fact that they have yet played a solid four quarter game.

Hawthorn to defeat St Kilda

If Hawthorn loose to St Kilda, then I think the question marks on them is fair but its only round 6 and if you look at the In’s for them (Birchall and Smith) and expect a quick turn around in form.

Interesting to see Justin Koschitzke being left out of the St Kilda side. Still think even with Beau Wilkes and Nick Riewoldt up forward, Kosi is worth including as a back up ruckmen and forward.

Carlton to defeat GWS

Does anyone believe that Waite has a hip, Judd is sore and Kreuzer’s knee is dodgy? I do not have a problem with teams resting players, Geelong and Collingwood did it last year and West Coast did it in round 4. However treating us like fools and saying they are injured is a joke!

By the way West Coast also used the injured card trick with Priddas and Glass.

Richmond to defeat Port

Richmond were amazing against West Coast and were unlucky not to sneak across the line. Richmond are probably the most informed side in the bottom 11 (including Hawthorn and Collingwood) yet only have one win.

Port wont be a push over but I am worried that these ‘honourable’ losses will stop and Port are due for a Shocker of a match.

West Coast to defeat Kangaroos

Kangaroos are with a small chance here but West Coast should win and its good to see them naming some young kids in Brennan, Newman, Sheppard and Lycett. Jacob Brennan should play as they need a 3rd tall defender as they were out pointed a few times against the Tigers last week and I think Norths forward line is more dangerous.

Your Tips and Opinions

Collingwood 11.14 (80) vs Essendon 11.13 (79)

Next Round: Western Bulldogs v Collingwood, Essendon v Brisbane

A clash that was worthy of its standalone fixture on ANZAC Day. The Pies just got there against the Dons by the slimmest of margins. Dane Swan was outstanding for his 42 possessions and 3 goals in the black and white.

Collingwood had pretty much led at every change but the Dons rallied to put on 3 consecutive goals to get oh so close.

For Essendon, Alwyn Davey kicked 3 majors including one that levelled the scores late in the final quarter. Brent Stanton was kept quiet by a heavy tagging job.

Carlton defeat Fremantle

Fremantle 7.15 (57) vs Carlton 10.5 (65)

Next Round: Gold Coast v Fremantle, Carlton v Greater Western Sydney

A hard game to critique with both teams unimpressive in this arm-wrestle low scoring game, which could be the ‘new’ Dockers signature style under Rossy Lyon.

Freo definitely missed the ruck dominance that Aaron Sandilands gives them ven though they won centre clearances, they look better with the big man in their side.

Carlton need to win these games outright if they to be taken seriously. They let the Dockers back in the game last quarter, and should make a statement next round against GWS.

Western Bulldogs defeat Greater Western Sydney

Greater Western Sydney 9.8 (62) vs Western Bulldogs 15.14 (104)

Next Round: Carlton v Greater Western Sydney, Western Bulldogs v Collingwood

The Bulldogs went goalless in the first quarter but still managed a 42 point victory against the new kids GWS.

A scrappy affair by both side, the stand-outs for the Bulldogs were Ryan Griffen (37 possessions) and Shaun Higgins (2 goals)

The Giants’ Jeremy Cameron took 7 marks and 5 goals to go with his bag of 4 goals from round 2.

North Melbourne defeat Gold Coast

North Melbourne 17.25 (127) vs Gold Coast 13.15 (93)

Next Round: West Coast v North Melbourne, Gold Coast v Fremantle

Gold Coast showed a lot of fight before North Melbourne woke out of their slumber to turn it up a level with a 34 point victory.

It was a solid effort for the GC with no Ablett and Rischitelli, but Debutant Kyal Horsley seems to be a good find making the most of his opportunities with a impressive game.

A tough game for Norths next round against West Coast but Subi’s dimensions suits their game and Richmond’s effort would of been encouraging.

St Kilda defeat Melbourne

Melbourne 10.6 (66) vs St Kilda 12.12 (84)

Next Round: Geelong v Melbourne, St Kilda v Hawthorn

A trying game in wet conditions was highlighted by Stephen Milne‘s 500th goal. Melbourne finally showed some backbone but the class of the Saints led them to an 18 point win.

Lenny Hayes for St Kilda back from injury just adds that extra dimension to their game. His 25 disposals were complimented by a late game goal that buried any hopes of a Demon win.

A tough clash for Melbourne next round against the Cats, and the Saints face a good test against the Hawks looking for a rebound win.

Geelong defeat Brisbane

Brisbane 4.17 (41) vs Geelong 12.7 (79)

Next Round: Essendon v Brisbane, Geelong v Melbourne

The rain and facing Geelong was a little overwhelming for Brisbane in the end going down by 38 points, in Simon Black‘s 300th game for the Lions.

Tom Hawkins for Geelong, snared 6 goals which was quite a feat considering the conditions made it hard enough just to grab the ball let alone kick it.

An interesting game of ‘How’s your Father’ between Cat’s midfielder Joel Selwood and Lions’ tagger Andrew Raines might be looked at by the review panel with interest, but at least it added some spark to a rain sodden match.

Sydney defeat Hawthorn

Hawthorn 10.9 (69) vs Sydney 16.10 (106)

Next Round: St Kilda v Hawthorn, Sydney v Adelaide

Adam Goodes in his record breaking 304th game helped inspire ‘underdogs’ Sydney to a 37 point win over the Hawks at their home away from home – Launceston.

Sydney now sit only second to the Eagles on the ladder and have’nt dropped a match so far. Goodes finished with 3 goals and Josh Kennedy was one of the Swans’ best.

A tough test for Hawks next round facing a Saints’ team capable of winning. Sydney should defeat Adelaide at home.

West Coast defeat Richmond

Richmond 14.13 (97) vs West Coast 16.11 (107)

Next Round: Port Adelaide v Richmond, West Coast v North Melbourne

Richmond really took it to the league leaders West Coast, but still the Eagles managed a 10 point escape from jail card.

Surprisingly for the record it was a first for West Coast, having lost their previous encounters against the Tiges at Docklands.

Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin were brilliant for Richmond, Josh Hill kicked 3 goals for West Coast and is turning out to be a real find.

Adelaide defeat Port Adelaide

Adelaide 16.14 (110) vs Port Adelaide 14.7 (91)

Next Round: Sydney v Adelaide, Port Adelaide v Richmond

A Sunday showdown in South Australia did justice as the final match of the round. The Crows managed a 19 point win over their crosstown rivals helped by a Taylor Walker 6 goal haul.

Patrick Dangerfield (39 disposals), Scott Thompson (34 touches) and Rory Sloane (27 possessions) were a devastating combination for the Crows in the midfield.

Port Adelaide talls Justin Westhoff and John Butcher each kicked 4 goals.

Fremantle to defeat Carlton

Carlton have a good record at Subiaco and I am personally still unsold on Fremantle but if Fyfes missed along with Sandilands they will struggle but if Fremantle are to be taken serious, they need to win games like this. Sandilands is out which is a huge win for Carltons ruck division of Hampson and Kreuzer who I do not rate!

Yarren and Carrazo are big losses for Carlton especially in their running area and on the biggest ground in Australia. I can understand Gibbs playing defense but Carlton really need him in the midfield, when he moved there last week in the last quarter he dominated and gave his side needed run.

Purely on Fyfe playing and that the game is at Subiaco I am tipping Fremantle.

Western Bulldogs to defeat GWS

Honestly who cares…

North Melbourne to defeat Gold Coast

North’s bubble burst last week and that is the reason why no one still rates them!

They should win against Gold Coast even if Garry Ablett jnr, Michael Rischitelli and David Swallow play who all have huge question marks over their fitness. Without two or all of the three, the midfield looks weak and I expect Petrie, Swallow and Bastinac to have big weeks.

This match will over shadow the concern regarding playing three ruckmen which was obvious against Sydney, if one of Petrie, Goldstein or McIntosh have a quiet match, they could be spending the rest of the year in reserves and be the next David Hale.

St Kilda to defeat Melbourne

When St Kilda win, they will be 3 – 2 which is not a bad start of the year and I think the St Kilda hierarchy will be quietly happy about that.

Colin Sylvia will be a huge return for Melbourne but its time he makes a stand. He is one of the few impact players on the clubs list and he needs to have an impact. Justin Koschitzke’s suspension hurts structure but I think new coach Watters will be slightly happy as it gives Beau Wilkes, Daniel Archer and or Rhys Stanley an opportunity to make a position theirs.

Geelong to defeat Brisbane

Geelong and Collingwood both are under performing at the moment but last time I checked finals is played in September and not April so do not write them off yet. Geelong will win but I doubt it will be a cake walk and could be the closest match between these two for a while.

Hawthorn to defeat Sydney

This will be the match of the weekend and if Hawthorn loose, Clarkson can try and spin it how ever he wants to, it wont matter! The Question marks over Hawthorn will be HUGE!

Sydney are not a team to take lightly with Goodes back from bruised knees, Kennedy, Parker and Bird in career best form and can arguably argue that their contested football is as good if not better than Hawthorns midfield.

West Coast to defeat Richmond

This will not be a walk over and will be a good match. Richmond are still struggling with only one win but they have played Collingwood, Carlton and Geelong so far and pushed them all at times and West Coast is still a young developing side and are having to travel after a tough match against Hawthorn.

Jack Riewoldt is due for a big match and his battle with Eric Mackenzie will be one to watch. Tyrone Vickery is another who will need to lift if they are a serious chance against the Eagles. West Coast should win but Richmond are not without a chance and will need to start well.

Adelaide to defeat Port Adelaide

Adelaide should win! They tell us they are a top 8 side and even with their 6 easy matches against GWS/ Gold Coast and Port you expect them to win but this is a Showdown and even when the other team sucks, they still are close and hotly fought.

Port need to win to give their improvement they have shown in 2012 a shot of confidence so they can get on a roll. Will this be the match? I expect Adelaide to win but they were hardly impressive against GWS last week.

Lets put aside the argument which always continues about whether Essendon and Collingwood should be allowed the monopoly over the day and just celebrate the game and the memory of the fallen, those who were lucky enough to return and those who are still serving. We all know this but the point where people have a go at the young kids because of their skill level is wrong! Yes at the moment they cannot hit the side of a barn 10 paces out but that does mean they are not skillful! All it means is that they are down on confidence.

Jack Trengove is a young man who is lacking confidence not skill.

Let us go back to 2010 and look at West Coast who were exactly in the same spot as Melbourne is at the moment. Everyone was questioning their recruiting and playing stock and now they are to some almost certainties to this years Grand Final.

Scott Selwood, Brad Ebert, Chris Masten, Matthew Priddas etc were all dodgy kicks and West Coast was widely known as the least skilled side in the competition. Now look at them…

So what was the reason why West Coast become from a basket case of a club to a club who is now playing deep in the finals? Yes recruiting key personal off field, multiple pre seasons and key older players fit and healthy all do help but the key is confidence.

In the first round in 2011, West Coast should have lost, they had injuries and North were all over them, however West Coast won and that was the start of the rebuilding of their confidence. Mid season they were pin pointing kicks and defeating top teams like Geelong and Carlton.

So what is the key for Melbourne to gain confidence and to improve?

A lucky win here will make all the difference. Do not throw the Baby out with the Bath Water may only be a silly saying but its true and with some confidence and things going right, they will be a competitive skillful team soon.
