Yesterday, it actually started acting like mid-October in the Midwest. For two weeks, we had been enjoying "Chamber of Commerce" days with 75-degree temps and sunshine galore.

Yesterday, all that changed. Dark, drizzly and dank conditions drove me inside. The cold, damp weather had settled into my bones...and it drove me....straight....into...the...basement.

An overwhelming instinct to nest...and my children's outgrown summer clothes started beckoning me. (Okay, that was only after the last piece of apple pie in the fridge called my name first - - but we don't need to get into that...)

Before school started, the kids and I weeded through the backs of their closets. After coming up for precious air, we realized we had a wonderful assortment of gently-used clothing, toys and shoes they no longer needed.

So we trudged this Mini-Mount Kilimanjaro of too-small stuff to the basement closet for "another day." Well, yesterday happened to be that "another day."

Little did I know, things had multiplied (and gotten messier) in that closet since September. Undaunted, I knew that in the middle of October, I was going to "think spring"... springtime Kid's Closet sale, that is.

Instead of waiting until two weeks before the Kid's Closet sale, I decided I was going to start to hang, package and tag items early.

I used the Four C's as a guideline for acceptable merchandise:

• Clean. Items just look and sell better when they're spit-spot.

• Current. No one wants to buy (or wear) polyester that was fashionable in the 1970s.

• Complete. Ever try to put a puzzle together that's missing one piece? 'Nough said.

• Compliant. No recalled cribs, toys, strollers or car seats are sold at Kid's Closet Sales. We want children to be safe, not sorry!

I work in my basement, and feel the sun's afterglow on all these sunny outfits, and the satisfaction of ditching my procrastinating ways. Spotty rain forecast for the remainder of the week? Bring it on.

Bewitched by the fall season?

As Halloween creeps up on all of us, the ever-important children's costumes for the event can be elusive, if not down-right expensive!

Today, Topeka's Kid's Closet sale opens, and runs through the 24th...plenty of time to get a great costume at a great price.

Giving Thanks and (No-Flack) Friday!

Here's wishing you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends surrounding you.

While still shaking off the turkey's tryptophan-induced stupor, I'm so delighted to not have to go out amidst the crowds this Black Friday.

Instead, I have indulged myself at Kid's Closet Connection sales throughout the year and shopped at KCC's "No-Flack" Friday sales, which tend to be the day when most items go to HALF-OFF their already lower-than-retail price!

I've purchased the cutest Christmas outfits for nieces and nephews with tags still attached! Toys, teen room decor and baby equipment were purchased still new in the box!

Who needs to wait and camp out in the cold, while making your way from store to store? Kid's Closet Sales are like a treasure hunt and one-stop shopping all wrapped into one.

Also the BUY-LOCAL movement has NOTHING on shopping at Kid's Closet Sales...where money spent, goes into the pockets of moms selling their like-new, outgrown kid's items (just like me!)

It's not that I don't enjoy a little retail therapy and will certainly make my way through the shops before the holidays hit. It's just that I'm thankful for the opportunity to be part of Kid's Closet Sales, and that I've had the good fortune to shop early for the holidays!

T-Minus one week until TURKEY DAY!!! Really, we have so much for which to be thankful!

This is to remind you that while you're rolling OUT the dough for the DELISH rolls, you can be rolling IN the dough at the next Kid's Closet Connection Sale by consigning with us!

Be a hero this Thanksgiving...and make these rolls. These really are easy...and have a built-in window for tagging your items. Let us know when you're pulling these out of the oven...and we'll roll right over!

Butterhorns or crescent rolls
Makes 32
5 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
1/2 cup, 1 tablespoon sugar, divided
1 cup warm water (105 to 110 degrees)
3 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 1/2 cups bread flour*
1 cup unsalted butter, melted, divided
To make the dough: In a small glass bowl, dissolve yeast and 1 tablespoon sugar in warm water. Let mixture stand 20 minutes, or until yeast is bubbly.

Meanwhile, combine eggs, vegetable oil, salt and 1/2 cup sugar in a large mixing bowl. Beat on low speed, using the beater or paddle attachment on an electric stand mixer. Add yeast mixture and continue to mix until well combined.

With mixer running on low speed, carefully add flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until dough forms. Replace the mixer's attachment with a dough hook and beat on medium speed for 1 to 2 minutes. Dough will be sticky.

Transfer dough to a gallon-sized resealable plastic bag, seal and place flat in refrigerator overnight, or at least 6 hours. If you choose the 6 hour rise, you can get a lot of organizing, packaging and tagging done for the next Kid's Closet Connection Sale in that time!

Remove dough from plastic bag and divide in half. Place half of divided dough back into bag and return to refrigerator.

On a lightly floured surface, roll remaining dough half into a 16-inch circle. Using a pizza wheel, cut circle of dough into 16 wedges (like a pizza or pie).

Coat two baking sheets with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.
Pour 1/2 cup melted butter into a glass pie pan. Dredge a triangle section of dough through the butter. Starting with the end opposite of the tip of the triangle, loosely roll dough up, so that it creates a crescent roll shape. (Loosely rolling dough segment around the longest finger works well.)

Place on a baking sheet and continue rolling dough triangles until finished. Place 8 unbaked rolls on each sheet. (Reserved dough in refrigerator may be prepared, as noted above, or can be stored in refrigerator, for up to a week before preparation.)

Cover baking sheets with a clean dishtowel and place in a warm place, free of drafts, for 2 to 3 hours, or until dough has doubled in size. Imagine your bank account growing, too, as you tag unused items for CASH as they sell at the next Kid's Closet Sale!

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Bake for 6 to 7 minutes, or until lightly browned. Serve warm with homemade strawberry jam.

I love this last week in December, caught in the holiday afterglow and an unhurried pace, it's a time for "out with the old" before the "in with the new" portion can commence.

After the last holiday gift is opened and all the wrappings, boxes and bows have been picked up, it's time to start the assimilation process. And, that inevitably means taking stock.

Taking stock is two-fold: 1) Being thankful for all that you have and the gifts you have received, and 2) Passing along the things that are no longer needed, wanted or used.

While I donate a number of items to local charities (especially winter clothes), I am also determined to "Think Spring!" - - the springtime Kid's Closet Connection Sale, that is.

New Year's Resolutions are a tricky thing. Resolve to lose those stubborn pounds, and you may find joy and pleasure whittled from your dining table, too. (Pass the celery sticks, please...)

This year, I'm making small, attainable goals instead. The loftier goal of living healthfully is actualized by committing to running every morning, cutting out junk food snacking (darn you Peanut M&Ms!) and drinking water before, during and after every meal. See? Small, simple goals...

The same is true when it comes to organizing my home. With children running here, there and underfoot, everyone brings their treasures home and seemingly deposits stuff EVERYWHERE! To attain the loftier goal of living simply, I've made a commitment to keep my storage room clean and organized.

My storage room is where items that have been outgrown or are no longer needed go to live and MULTIPLY!

I still feel the rush of excitement every time Chris and I (and our great volunteers!) set up our semi-annual Kid's Closet Connection Sale (this picture was taken before our Fall 2011 sale) at the Overland Park Convention Center's 30,000 square-foot convention hall.

Today, the original Kid's Closet Connection sales average 100,000 items, brought to us and consigned by 500+ families. The expectation is to draw in no less than 5,000 savvy shoppers who know where to buy high-quality children’s clothing, toys, furniture and accessories.

Kid's Closet Connection sales are in growth-mode. We are a recession-proof business - because families know how fast children grow - and how expensive it can be to keep kids in clothes, shoes and toys that are age-appropriate and fit properly.

Even though the sale has grown, we still reflect on our first Kid's Closet sale, held in a small meeting hall in Lenexa, Kan., in 2004. This weekend, we celebrate our growth with nearly 30 people who are the most dedicated, intelligent and hard-working people - - the franchise owners of the Kid's Closet Connection brand.

With sales that span across the country from Virginia to California, we couldn't have dreamed that eight years ago, we would build this business into the respected brand it is. But we couldn't do it without our dedicated buyers, sellers and volunteers.

The all-day Kid's Closet Connection conference with our coast-to-coast franchisees was a great success.

We talked. We listened. We laughed. We cried. (Okay, we only cried from laughing too hard.)

At the end of the day, a number of franchisees were given "Top Drawer" awards for their contributions and recognized for their success in running individual Kid's Closet Connection sales.
