The rumors are true, a Grand Canyon family vacation is nothing short of incredible. I mean really, it’s the Grand Canyon.

I’ve taken my kids to the Grand Canyon twice – in July 2015 and in March 2018. Each experience was different, but both were wildly awe-inspiring.

Honestly, I can’t recommend a road trip to the Grand Canyon more highly. So, I compiled a guide to help you plan out a trip to this national park. Let’s go!

Planning a Grand Canyon Vacation

A vacation at the Grand Canyon is very popular, especially with families.

No wonder there there are so many planning guides, like this one – Grand Canyon National Park: The Complete Guide – which has 200+ five-star reviews.

According to the National Park Service, more than 4.9 million visitors came to peer out into the massive canyon in 2024.

That noted, you’ll want to start planning a family trip to the Grand Canyon as soon as you know your available dates.

By planning, I mean booking your lodging or campground in or near the Grand Canyon. Some stays, especially inside the park, get booked solid a year in advance.

On both of our visits to the Grand Canyon with kids, we stayed outside the park – once in Tusayan, once in Williams.

How to Get to the Grand Canyon

If you plan to fly, the closest major airports are in Phoenix and Las Vegas.

However, from these gateway cities, it’s still a 4-5 hour drive to Grand Canyon-South Rim.

Flagstaff is much closer – from Flagstaff to Grand Canyon, it’s just a 90-minute drive – but flights are limited.

We flew into Las Vegas. This was the easiest, cheapest and most direct way for us to fly from the east coast. We spent the night off the strip in Las Vegas.

We then made the drive to Williams (the closest “big” town to the Grand Canyon) a day later after spending time in Las Vegas.

If you plan to stay in Las Vegas, here are the best kid-friendly hotels in Las Vegas. I also pulled together a list of things to do in Las Vegas with kids.

What’s great about flying into Las Vegas is that the drive to Grand Canyon-South Rim takes you along historic Route 66 in Arizona.

Make stops at Mr. D’z Route 66 Diner in Kingman and snap photos with Giganticus Headicus, a 14-foot Tiki style head in Seligman.

Alternatively, fly to Phoenix. From here, it’s an easy drive north along I-17 to Flagstaff. Then you’ll go west along I-40 to Williams, then north to Grand Canyon.

If you have time, make a side trip to Sedona. Drive to Airport Mesa for the most incredible views of Sedona’s red rocks.

Flying in to Flagstaff is an option. It’s serviced by American and United, but flights are few and you will still need to fly through either Dallas, Phoenix or Denver.

You won’t save any time, but you will likely spend much more money.

Grand Canyon: Where to Stay

When planning a trip to the Grand Canyon with kids, you have three lodging options. Well, four if you include campgrounds.

However, since in-park campgrounds are often (though not always) first-come, first-served, I hesitate to suggest this as an option for families.

In-Park Lodging

There are eight lodging options located inside Grand Canyon National Park. These book up months and months (and months) in advance.

If you’re keen on a stay in Grand Canyon, like literally steps from the edge of the canyon, book your lodging now (like stop reading and go book a room).

Six of the lodges are situated along the South Rim. The seventh option – Phantom Ranch – is deep in the canyon and can only be reached by foot, mule or raft.

Phantom Ranch also is known to book up solid 18 months in advance.

This may be the best place to stay in Grand Canyon since it’s actually in the canyon, not just situated along the rim.

El Tovar Lodge, Kachina Lodge, Thunderbird Lodge and Bright Angel Lodge are historic Grand Canyon National Park Lodges on the South Rim.

Maswik Lodge is a 5-10 minute walk away from the canyon’s edge and has a food court inside. Yavapai Lodge – run by Delaware North – is also at the South Rim.

However, this pet-friendly lodge is set back from the edge and is closer to Market Plaza, which has groceries, a deli and souvenirs for sale.

You can rent outdoor gear and mail postcards there too.

On the North Rim, there is one hotel, Grand Canyon Lodge. This hotel is open from May 15 to October 15.

Tusayan Hotels

On our first trip to the Grand Canyon with kids, we stayed in Tusayan. It’s just one mile from the South Rim entrance.

Across three blocks, there’s a McDonald’s, a Wendy’s, a Starbucks and a handful of sit-down restaurants. There’s also a small grocery store.

There are six hotels in the quaint three-block town of Tusayan, including:

Holiday Inn Express & Suites Grand Canyon

The Grand Hotel at the Grand Canyon

Seven Mile Lodge

We spent two nights at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Grand Canyon, which had free wi-fi, free breakfast, a fitness center and an indoor pool.

The hotel also has KidSuites that sleep two adults and three children, which are perfect for traveling families.

It’s easy to get into Grand Canyon National Park from Tusayan thanks to a free shuttle that makes stops across the town every 15-20 minutes.

You’ll thank me as you cruise into the park on the shuttle and bypass the long line of cars waiting to get in to the park for the day.

Staying in Tusayan may be the next best thing to staying inside the park.

Considering hotels in Tusayan have in-room wi-fi and air conditioning (most, if not all, in-park hotels do not), a stay in Tusayan may even be the very best lodging option, especially with kids.

Tusayan hotels are among the best Grand Canyon hotels given their proximity to the national park.

Williams Hotels

On our second visit to the Grand Canyon with kids, we stayed in Williams. It’s about an hour from the South Rim entrance.

Here you’ll find a small Western town complete with Americana-style restaurants and shops that date back to the early-1900’s.

When considering where to stay near Grand Canyon, there are a lot of comfortable budget hotels and motels in Williams, like Comfort Inn and Days Inn.

We chose a more classic stay, The Lodge on Route 66. The upscale Route 66 motel had recently been renovated and was an easy walk to shops and eateries.

A popular stay in Williams is at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel, which resembles the century-old train depot.

It’s a popular pick among those taking the train to the Grand Canyon for the day on the Grand Canyon Railway. There’s also an RV park and a pet resort.

We stayed in Williams for two nights and it was the perfect amount of time to explore both the Wild West-style town and the Grand Canyon.

There plenty of pet-friendly hotels in Williams, as well as stays that include free breakfast and free wi-fi.

RV Parks & Campgrounds

If you plan to visit the Grand Canyon and want to stay in either an RV or tent, plan ahead.

On the South Rim – there are three campgrounds, including Mather Campground, Trailer Village and Desert View Campground (closed in winter).

Mather Campground and Trailer Village (RVs only) can be booked online months in advance.

Desert View Campground, however, is a first-come, first-served campground that fills up by noon each day (likely earlier during high season).

There are some options outside the park too, like the Grand Canyon / Williams KOA in Williams, which has tent sites and pull-through RV sites, as well as cabins.

In Tusayan, Grand Canyon Camper Village accommodates RVs with full hook-ups.

There is also one campground on the North Rim called North Rim Campground. This campground is open from May 15 to October 15.

What to Do: Grand Canyon with Kids

There’s a lot to see and do at Grand Canyon National Park, but I first suggest watching the park orientation film at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center.

The 22-minute film, Grand Canyon: A Journey of Wonder, takes visitors on a dawn to dusk journey across this natural wonder.

Once you’ve seen the Grand Canyon in broad strokes, here’s what I suggest. All of these activities can be easily accessed by way of the free in-park shuttles.

Walk Along the Rim Trail

The Rim Trail is an easy, paved walk. It’s ideal for children and is very much wheelchair and stroller accessible.

Walk the .7 mile section between Mather Point (adjacent to Grand Canyon Visitor Center) and Yavapai Point. I stared out into the Grand Canyon the entire time.

This relaxing stroll may be the best way to see the Grand Canyon with family.

Attend a Ranger-Led Program

Attend a ranger program. You and your kids can learn about fossils, geology, native birds and animals. There are even ranger-led walks and night sky programs.

Pick up a park newspaper when you arrive or go online ahead of time to check out the schedule.

Stamp Your Parks Passport (Multiple Times)

Buy a Passport to Your National Parks (you can buy one online for $12.95) Inside the park, buy the official park sticker to add to your passport book.

Then, keep your eyes open for cancellation stamps, including stamps at Yavapai Geology Museum and Desert View.

Become a Junior Ranger

Pick up a free Grand Canyon Junior Ranger program booklet at any visitors center in the park.

Kids complete a certain number of activities depending on your child’s age. Children also need to attend a ranger-led program.

Kids can earn South Rim, North Rim and Phantom Rattler badges.

Bike Along the Greenway Trail

Rent bikes or e-bikes, as well as bike trailers, from Bright Angel Bicycles near the Grand Canyon Visitor Center to see the park from a new perspective.

There are three different routes that guide you along easy, paved (and largely car-free) trails close to the South Rim.

Bright Angel Bicycles also offers two different kid-friendly Grand Canyon tours by bike, including the 6-mile Hermit Road Tour and the 5.8-mile Yaki Road Tour.

What Else to Do Near the Grand Canyon

While there is plenty to do inside Grand Canyon National Park, there’s so much more to do in the area to round out your Grand Canyon family vacation.

Here are a few kid-friendly things to do on a Grand Canyon vacation with kids.

Bearizona (Williams)

Bearizona is a drive-thru wildlife park with bison, black bears, bighorn sheep, and mule deer.

Grab a seat on the Wild Ride Bus for a guide-narrated driving tour of the park. There’s a petting zoo and a walk-through area to pet sheep and goats.

Grand Canyon Railway (Williams)

Get your tickets punched steps from Route 66 and board a restored Grand Canyon-bound train car. But first, a Wild West show complete with gunslingers.

On board, a western singer entertains during the two-hour ride on the Grand Canyon Railway.

Pink Jeep Tours (Tusayan)

In Tusayan, book a two or three hour four-wheeled adventure with Pink Adventure Tours.

Guided tours take guests the length of the South Rim for sweeping canyon and Colorado River views, enabling visitors to capture plenty of photos and memories.

Meteor Crater (Winslow)

Make the drive to Meteor Crater in Winslow (about 75 minutes from Williams) to see a massive crater in the earth (yes, created by a meteor).

Watch a 10-minute film, then take the one-hour tour along the rim of the crater (a guided tour is the only way to see the crater).

Lowell Observatory (Flagstaff)

From Flagstaff to Grand Canyon, it’s a about a 90-minute drive. Explore Lowell Observatory, which is famous for its discovery of Pluto.

Kids can look at the sun, see the telescope used to discover the most famous dwarf planet and check out interactive exhibits just for kids.

If you drive in from the east, here are a few more cool things to do near the Grand Canyon.

Raft at Glen Canyon, explore the slot canyons at Antelope Canyon and look out into Horseshoe Bend. These are all in Page, Arizona.

Final Thoughts

Before you embark on your own fun-filled Grand Canyon family vacation, I wanted to share a few quick final thoughts and ideas.

Soak it All In

I can’t stress enough that a visit to the Grand Canyon is a one-of-a-kind experience.

For many, it’s life changing, and you may not even realize it until you are actually there (or once you’ve returned home).

So, take it slow. Don’t rush. Enjoy the views and soak it all in so you can hold onto the memories as long as you can.

Take Lots of Photos

I easily took three dozen photos of the Grand Canyon while walking along the Rim Trail. Every view seemed better than the last and worthy of a photo.

I look back at my photos now and they all pretty much look the same, but photographing the Grand Canyon is a part of the overall experience.

Enjoy the Ride

There’s so much to see and do along the way to the Grand Canyon with kids, like rafting along the Colorado River at Glen Canyon Dam.

Take a guided tour at Lower Antelope Canyon and taking in the views from Horseshoe Bend in Page, Arizona.

Slowing down along historic Route 66 is one more way to savor your Grand Canyon family vacation.

That’s not to mention the exquisite stretch of white sand and turquoise water.

Since you’re probably about to ask, the answer is yes. If you stay at one property, you can use and enjoy all that both resorts have to offer.

Most amenities, like beach chairs and umbrellas, are included as part of your daily resort fee.

For active families, look for water sports, like SUPing, parasailing and snorkeling. For land lovers, there is volleyball, mini golf and a giant inflatable beach slide.

These stylish, laid-back villas are a favorite among families, particularly large families thanks to a variety of two-bedroom villas and townhomes.

Individual properties wow with the space and comfort of home. Look for must-have amenities like full kitchens, dining tables, even washers and dryers.

For those traveling with an infant or toddler, request a crib when you book your reservation.

Here, families can book a stay at a true island gem, The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne.

Pristine beaches, a historic lighthouse and plenty of recreational activities, like tennis, water sports and golf, make this an ideal getaway for families.

That’s all in addition to the zero-entry family pool steps from the ocean. For school-age kids (ages 5-12), the resort wows with its signature Ritz Kids program.

Kids can engage in fun activities, like face painting and craft-making, as well as educational endeavors.

The Grove Resort & Water Park Orlando is for those who love Disney, but don’t love Disney. As in, no character breakfasts, no cast members, no Hidden Mickeys.

However, there are Mickey Mouse-shaped waffles on the kids’ breakfast menu. There’s also free shuttle service to the parks, but no more.

The resort is made for families given the resort is made up of one-, two- and three-bedroom suites. Each suite has a washer, dryer and full kitchen.

Adjacent to the water park is Longboard Bar & Grill, an open-air restaurant serving up starters, salads and sandwiches. There’s also an outdoor milkshake bar.

The Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort is one of a sprinkling of hotels that line the boardwalk. Rather, the “broadwalk,” a 2.5-mile promenade.

As a bonus, the hotel offers free one-hour cruiser bike rentals so you and the kids can pedal from one end to the other on the promenade.

You’ll also want to don your swimsuits and take a dip in the on-site pools, including one with a water slide. On the 11th floor, there’s an adults-only rooftop pool.

There are eight bars and restaurants spread across the hotel, including the 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill and Floridays Airstream Café.

Yes, a food truck. It’s parked just outside on the “broadwalk.”

When it’s time to turn in, look for standard rooms with a restorative, yet tropical vibe. The rooms are refreshingly bright with whites and teals.

Even the Adirondack chairs on the balcony are beachy in pastel blue and green.

I’m kind of a big fan of Old West towns. I even included a visit to Wild West Country as the One Thing You Must Do with Kids in Every U.S. State for Kansas.

Naturally, I was eager to explore historic Dodge City, Kansas as the kids and I drove from Colorado to Missouri on our cross-country road trip a few years ago.

If you look at the map, you’ll see that Dodge City is a bit out of the way (i.e., we could not just take I-70 all the way across the state).

However, it was well worth the detour, especially since we rolled into town during the last couple of days of the annual Dodge City Days celebration in late-summer.

Things to Do in Dodge City, Kansas

Less than three hours from Wichita, Dodge City is the place to go for rodeos, old-time photos and a look back at the gunfighters of the Wild West, like Wyatt Earp.

Dodge City is also just five hours from Kansas City. Here are 10 historic and fun things to do in Dodge City, KS.

#1: See the Santa Fe Trail Tracks

Just nine miles west of town, it’s a must to see the wagon tracks still in existence on the Santa Fe Trail, which served as a highway for the pioneers in the mid-1800s.

Before you go, download a narrated mobile tour of the Santa Fe Trail to listen to on your cell phone.

The Santa Fe Trail covered 800 miles, from Independence, Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico. This important wagon trail cut straight across the state.

A visit here is one of the most historically significant things to do in Kansas. It’s also one of the best free things to do in Dodge City, KS.

#2: Watch a Gunfight at the Boot Hill Museum

One of the highlights of our stay was watching the high noon gunfight at the Boot Hill Museum, a historical Dodge City museum.

As part of this gunfight reenactment, there were fistfights, gunfire, good guys, bad guys, all a portrayal of what life was like in Dodge City in the 1870’s.

Historic Dodge City gunfight reenactment at the Boot Hill Museum

#3: Pose for Old-Time Photos

You can pose for old-time photos at theme parks, but why not put on costumes and pose for old-fashioned photos in an actual Old West saloon.

You can do so in the summer at the Old West Photo Parlor at the Boot Hill Museum. For more than costumes, do some western shopping, too.

There are several shops in town that specialize in western wear, including Out West and Long’s Inc., both of which sell western shirts, boots and jeans.

At the Boot Hill Museum, you’ll find western-theme t-shirts.

#4: Meet a Herd of Buffalo

Head to the Wild West Heritage Foundation Live Buffalo & Longhorn Exhibit to meet several longhorn steers and buffalo.

While you’re there, check out the Dodge City Trail of Fame complete with hand and footprints from famed Kansans, including rodeo clowns and announcers.

Follow the sidewalks of the historic district to pay tribute to western favorites.

#5: Go to the Rodeo

We’d never been to a rodeo before, so it was a real treat to attend the finals of the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo. It’s one of the top Dodge City events of the year.

There were bucking broncos, bull riding, and yes, mutton bustin’ in which kids ages 4-7 see how long they can ride on the backs of running sheep.

An exciting rodeo show during Dodge City Days

#6: See the Animals at the Wright Park Zoo

Spend an hour visiting with animals, like the llamas and bison, at one of the smallest zoos in Kansas. There’s also an aviary with peacocks and quails.

Every kid loves a zoo, so the Wright Park Zoo is a great place to relax and explore. This may not be the biggest Dodge City, Kansas attraction, but it’s a fan favorite.

#7: Tour the Trail of Fame

Take a Trail of Fame Walking Tour, which makes stops throughout historic Dodge City, like the restored Santa Fe Depot, Boot Hill Museum and Sundial Park.

Along the way, you’ll see statues and memorials dedicated to famous and infamous western figures, like Wyatt Earp.

#8: Explore a Replica of Old Dodge City

Go in and out of historic sites, like a saloon, a church, an ice cream parlor and a cemetery. All are circa 1870’s and are part of the Boot Hill Museum.

Check out various artifacts and exhibits on display. Then, learn about the history of the American buffalo, which almost went extinct in the 1800’s.

A replica of Old Dodge City at the Boot Hill Museum

#9: Take a Historic Trolley Tour

For Dodge City, Kansas history, pick up the Dodge City Trolley at the visitor center across the parking lot from the Boot Hill Museum.

The one-hour narrated tour is a great way to learn about Wild West from the comfort of a climate-controlled trolley.

Make stops at the Cattle Feedlot Overlook, Fort Dodge, Gospel Hill and Longbranch Saloon.

#10: Get Up Close with Old West Gunfighters

Pay a visit to the Gunfighters Wax Museum to get up close and personal with well-known gunfighters like Bat Masterson, Buffalo Bill and Jesse James.

The wax museum is one of the top amusements. It’s located just inside the Kansas Teachers’ Hall of Fame.

Where to Stay in Dodge City

When you’re ready to mosey into town, here are a few favorite family-friendly hotels in Dodge City:

* Comfort Suites Dodge City (look for a heated indoor pool and a free hot breakfast, including an omelet bar, on historic Wyatt Earp Blvd)

If you prefer a campground, the Dodge City KOA has two-bedroom cabins and tent camping sites, as well as several dozen pull-through and back-in RV sites.

Of course, you’ll get hungry at some point while in town. In addition to Billy Sims BBQ, here are a few additional places to eat in Dodge City, KS:

While I wouldn’t typically suggest a chain restaurant, we ate at the Applebee’s while in town. Sometimes you need that when traveling with kids.

The restaurant shares a parking lot with the Boot Hill Museum. It was convenient and it’s one of these places where you know what you’re going to get.

Stop in the tourism office when you ride into town. It’s adjacent to the Boot Hill Museum.

Think about visiting Door County with kids. Seriously. Door County, Wisconsin is a hidden gem, especially for kids and families.

Few outside the state have ever heard of (much less been to) this delightfully scenic peninsula, yet it’s just 4 hours from Chicago.

It’s close enough for a weekend getaway, but you’ll want to spend more time in this carefree peninsula that’s made up of 15 quaint towns and villages.

Enjoy a hike in a state park, a cuddle with farm animals or a day spent at a sandy beach. Here are the most fun things to do in Door County with kids.

#1: Ride a Bike at Peninsula State Park

Rent a hybrid or mountain bike from Edge of Park Rentals at Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek. They also have kids’ bikes, tagalongs and bike trailers.

Set off on the 10-mile Sunset Trail, which takes riders on a wonderfully scenic route with stops at Eagle Bluff Lighthouse and Nicolet Beach.

In summer, the Northern Sky Theatre puts on original musicals under a sky full of stars at the park’s outdoor amphitheater.

#2: Go to the Beach at Waterfront Park

In Sister Bay, the kids will love splashing in the water, building sand castles and paddling kayaks at Waterfront Park, the largest public waterfront in Door County.

Waterfront Park is among the top Door County beaches thanks to a sandy beach, a small pier and a swim-out platform for jumping into the water.

A large playground and grassy area for kicking around a soccer ball keep kids busy. For dinner, stop in local pizza place, Wild Tomato, for delicious wood-fired pizza.

#3: Take a Hike to “Old Baldy”

Wisconsin’s Door County is home to five state parks, including Whitefish Dunes State Park in Sturgeon Bay.

It’s an absolute must to hike the 2.7-mile Old Baldy Loop Trail to reach the top of “Old Baldy” (take the red trail to Old Baldy, then the yellow trail on the return).

Old Baldy is the tallest sand dune in Wisconsin, rising 93 feet above lake level. The park has a hands-on nature center and a white sandy beach along Whitefish Bay.

When conditions are right, it’s possible to go kayaking on Lake Michigan’s crystal-clear waters on your family vacation.

#4: See Baby Goats on a Farm Tour

In Sister Bay, make time for a two-hour farm tour at Door County Creamery. Farm tours run May to October.

All tours include gelato and cheese tasting (cheese curds, oh yes), a patio lunch and special time to get up-close with mommy, daddy and baby goats.

Door County Creamery is also known to offer goat yoga in conjunction with Ironwood Yoga of Sister Bay.

Yoga mats are provided for this 40-minute session with baby goats.

#5: Go to a Classic Ice Cream Parlor

In Ephraim, it’s a must to go to Wilson’s for a frosted mug of home-brewed draft root beer, a flame-broiled burger and fries, and an ice cream sundae.

Wilson’s has been a family-owned landmark in Door County for more than 100 years. In summer, there will be crowds, but don’t let this stop you.

Order up a Cherry Berry Delight or a Clown Sundae to-go to eat it across the street for delightful water views.

Wilson’s is one of the best restaurants in Door County for families. The ice cream alone is worth a road trip to Door County.

#6: Watch a Drive-In Movie

Given there are so few drive-in theatres left in the United States (around 330, according to DriveInMovie.com), it’s a must to settle in for a family-friendly flick.

At Skyway Drive-In Theatre in Fish Creek, pull up to a speaker post to listen in or tune your car radio to FM 100.5 or AM 530.

There are plenty of snacks and treats available too, like foot long hot dogs, pizza, nachos and ice cream sandwiches. Watch from your car or watch from the lawn.

#7: Settle in for an Authentic Fish Boil

An authentic Fish Boil dinner is a true Door County tradition. You’ll find them all across the scenic peninsula.

One of the best places for a Fish Boil is Rowleys Bay Restaurant at Rowleys Bay Resort in Ellison Bay (open seasonally from late-May).

Fish Boil dinners are held four nights a week and are far more than dinner. They are an event that begins at 4:30 pm with storytelling.

Then, a boil-over in a huge outdoor kettle takes place at 5 pm. Get ready for black smoke and huge flames. The result is beyond delicious.

#8: Eat Cherries at Seaquist Orchards

Wisconsin’s Door County is well-known for its Montmorency Tart cherries, which go into pie filling, jams, barbecue sauce and wines, even salsas.

Seaquist Orchards is the largest cherry grower in the county and well worth a stop, maybe for cherry picking, while in Door County.

Take a one-hour tractor-guided farm tour across several acres of fruit trees, including cherry, apple and apricot from mid-May to late-October.

Stop in the bakery for a slice of fresh cherry pie. Seaquist Orchards even has its own Cherry Festival in late-July.

#9: Enjoy a Sunset Cruise on Sister Bay

Enjoy a colorful sunset on a sunset cruise in Door County with Sister Bay Scenic Boat Tours. This 90-minute live music cruise departs daily at 7 pm.

Guests are taken out into the gentle waters of Green Bay for breathtaking views as the sun prepares to dip below the horizon.

Sister Bay Scenic Boat Tours books several other boat tours, including the popular Eagle Bluff & Horseshoe Island Excursion, which is just 75 minutes.

This narrated cruise takes guests past Eagle Bluff to see sea caves and rock formations of Peninsula State Park.

While in Sister Bay, stop at Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf for mini golf. The 18-hole course was voted the Best in Door County by the Green Bay Press Gazette.

#10: Say Hi to the Animals at The Farm

In Sturgeon Bay, you won’t find just any farm. You’ll find The Farm.

More importantly, your kids will absolutely thank you when you stop so they can cuddle up with friendly kittens, lambs, piglets and rabbits.

The Farm calls this “a living museum in rural America.” Goat milking takes place every hour on the hour between 10 am and 4 pm.

Kids are encouraged to lend a hand at milking goats. Littles can also feed baby goats and lambs with milk bottles in the barnyard.

#11: Ride a Hay Wagon to Cana Island

Door County’s Cana Island is home to the 89-foot-tall Cana Island Lighthouse. Of the 11 Door County lighthouses and range lights.

This is one the most iconic Door County lighthouses with its gleaming white tower. It’s also one of the most-photographed in all of the Great Lakes region.

Kids will love taking a tractor-pulled hay wagon across the water-covered causeway for a bumpy ride to the island.

Climb 97 steps of the tower’s spiral staircase to be richly rewarded with sweeping views of Lake Michigan and the Door County peninsula.

#12: Kayak Wisconsin’s Rugged Shoreline

There are a variety of outfitters across Door County that offer guided kayak tours along the rocky shoreline.

You’ll paddle in and out of coves and caves in the crystal-clear lake water. One to try is a two-hour kayaking tour at Cave Point County Park for spectacular views.

Alternatively, check out a kayak at Peninsula State Park. Rent one at Nicolet Beach to kayak across Nicolet Bay to Horseshoe Island.

While on the island, make time for the one-mile hike along the Engelmar Trail that meanders along the edge of the 38-acre island.

Where to Stay

Are you looking for things to do in Cleveland with kids? You’re in luck! We found fun places for kids in Cleveland, but to be honest, the whole family had a blast.

I had completely forgotten that The Drew Carey Show was set in Cleveland until my third day in town, but I have to agree with the theme song, “Cleveland Rocks.”

We just got back from Cleveland this morning and we had such a great time. A fantastic mid-size city, there are so many fun things to do here.

We stayed in-town at the Holiday Inn Express Cleveland Downtown, which I highly recommend for a variety of reasons.

The hotel was just a block away from East 4th Street, a fantastic corridor of shops and restaurants, like Flannery’s Pub, Noodlecat and Greenhouse Tavern.

Even better, it was across the street from Rocket Fizz, a soda pop and candy shop with so many different kinds of candies.

As you can imagine, my kids were in heaven.

The Holiday Inn Express Cleveland Downtown was also only a 15 minute walk from the Great Lakes Science Center and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Even better, it was less than 10 minutes on foot from Progressive Field (Indians) and Quicken Arena (Cavaliers), so the location could not have been better.

Public Square was also less than a 10 minute walk from the hotel.

Related: 10 Best Hotel Deals in Cleveland

The hotel is inside an old bank building, so it’s completely charming, not cookie-cutter. We loved it.

And, of course, there was a free hot breakfast, including make-your-own pancakes. Always a favorite with my kids.

Valet parking was $24, but it’s the easiest option, and you have in-and-out privileges, which was nice.

Things to Do in Cleveland

If you’re thinking about exploring Cleveland as a family, take a look at my list of 15 fun things to do in Cleveland with kids.

1. Learn About Local Marine Life.

The Greater Cleveland Aquarium may not be as big as Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, but it still has a lot to offer kids and families.

You’ll learn about fish, reptiles and turtles from Ohio lakes and rivers, which can be found throughout the aquarium.

There are also several touch tanks where kids can use two fingers to tough stingrays and sea stars, among other small marine animals.

Look all around as you walk through the 150’ SeaTube to see sharks, stingrays and many other types of fish swim by.

The Tortoise Encounter is also not to be missed at the Greater Cleveland Aquarium.

2. Explore the Great Lakes Science Center.

There’s a lot to see and do at the Great Lakes Science Center, including hourly movies in the dome theater, daily science shows, a special area just for kids ages seven and under, and a three-phase LEGO exhibit.

Plan to get there when the science center opens at 10 am because you’ll want to spend much of your day there.

We spent lots of time with LEGO bricks, making stop-motion movies and building race cars.

We also made time for Dream Big, a fantastic 45-minute film showcasing what’s possible when you, yes, dream big.

It’s pretty incredible the difference a simple foot bridge can make.

There’s a great café in the science center too with well-priced salads, pizza, sandwiches, even gluten-free options.

3. Rock Out at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

A visit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is a must when in Cleveland, but only if you’re in town on your own or with children no younger than middle school.

Fortunately, the Rock Hall is next to the Great Lakes Science Center, so it’s easy to split up so you can divide and conquer if you have older and younger kids.

The main exhibition is on Level Zero, which was kind of confusing to us, and we didn’t end up seeing the memorabilia and rock through the ages exhibits until the end.

The exhibit highlighting the Hall of Fame Inductees is also on Level Zero.

Definitely check out the “Video Killed the Radio Star” exhibit on Level Two and “Rolling Stone / 50 Years” on Level Four.

4. Tour the Christmas Story House.

I didn’t even know that the house from the movie, A Christmas Story, was in Cleveland until only a few days before we made the drive to Cleveland.

It’s a must-go. Guided tours of the Christmas Story House leave every hour on the :15 and last 45-60 minutes, including time to explore the house and pose with the leg lamp, of course.

Like most people, I’ve seen the movie dozens of times.

The tour guide shared many interesting facts and stories about the director, how different scenes were shot and props that didn’t quite make it through the door to the house.

I may be back in Cleveland sooner than planned because, guess what, you can now spend the night inside the Christmas Story House.

5. Make a Stop at Mitchell’s Ice Cream.

Cleveland has a lot of great places to stop for ice cream, but we really liked Mitchell’s Ice Cream.

There are a handful of locations around Greater Cleveland, but you’ll want to stop at the location in-town on West 25th Street.

There are loads of flavors and the staff get you quickly through line (almost too quickly since we kept goofing up our orders!).

All of the ice cream ingredients are fresh, local, and in many cases, fair-trade or organic.

I had Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup, which was made with organic cocoa, and it was incredible. Seriously, so good.

You can also sign up for a Tasting Tour ($3.75 per person) at the flagship location in Ohio City.

As a bonus, you’ll receive a free scoop certificate at the end of the tour.

6. Splash Around on a Lake Erie Beach.

The beaches on Lake Erie are so much fun and perfect for a beach cook-out and splashing around in summer.

I never thought about going to the beach when visiting Cleveland, but it’s a must.

Hanging out at the beach is one of the most underrated things to do in Cleveland with kids -it’s great!

The Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve and Edgewater Park are a couple of great spots for going to the beach, boating and enjoying the sunset.

We met up with family on Clifton Beach in Lakewood, which is about 10 minutes outside of Cleveland.

It’s part of the private Clifton Club in Lakewood, but it definitely made me long for another day at any of the beaches in Greater Cleveland.

Before you visit Cleveland, check out this list of the 10 best beaches on Ohio’s Lake Erie coast.

7. Hunt for Sea Glass at the Beach.

Lake Erie is well-known for sea glass (or “beach glass”). My 12 y.o. daughter and I had a great time walking along the coast hunting for sea glass.

Clear and green are the most common, but every once in a while we’d find sea glass that was aqua, royal blue or amber, though those are far more rare.

Some beach-goers have even found sea glass that is yellow, red, orange or pink, though we weren’t lucky enough to find any of those colors.

Still, it was a fun activity to do with my daughter, and every wave brought in new sea glass to take home as our Cleveland treasures.

8. Ride the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.

I love trains and had been wanting to ride along the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, which runs the length of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, for some time.

Sunday was my day as we boarded the National Park Scenic coach train at the Rockside station in Independence, Ohio.

If you take the train to the end of the line in Akron, the round-trip is about three hours, 20 minutes, but we opted to get off at the Peninsula station, about 45 minutes into the ride.

This was perfect since it gave us time to explore the small town, eat lunch and work on Junior Ranger activity booklets before heading back to Rockside (the stopover was just under two hours).

Related article: Stamp It: Passport to Your National Parks Program

9. Earn a Junior Ranger Badge.

We love the Junior Ranger program and try to take advantage of it every time we visit a national park (some state parks also have Junior Ranger programs).

We picked up the activity booklets at the train stop in Peninsula and got right to work completing various activities (the kids needed to complete at least eight to earn a badge).

Even better, at Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which by the way is less than 20 minutes from downtown Cleveland, the kids had the option to also earn a Junior Ranger patch.

To earn the patch, the kids needed to attend a ranger program, complete three extra booklet activities or take a ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.

10. Go for a Family Bike Ride.

There are lots of UH Bikes bike share stations around Cleveland, making it easy to explore downtown by bicycle, but another great option is to rent a bike from Century Cycles in Peninsula.

Century Cycles is just a short walk from the Peninsula train station.

Since the train stopover in Peninsula is just under two hours, you have time for a one-hour bike rental to ride along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail.

The shop has plenty of bikes available, including e-bikes, kids’ bikes, bike trailers and tag-alongs.

Go for a bike ride, then stop for lunch at the Winking Lizard Tavern just across the street (they have a huge kids’ menu).

11. Take in an Indians Game.

Clevelanders do love their sports teams. Two of my girls and I bought tickets to a Cleveland Indians game at the last minute on Friday night and had a fantastic time.

We were among a very small minority not wearing Indians t-shirts and we didn’t see a single person wearing t-shirts or hats to cheer on the other team.

More than hot dogs and popcorn, Progressive Field offers all kinds of craft beers, cheesesteaks, nachos, even ballpark sundaes at Sweet Moses Ice Cream.

If you have time, sign up for a one-hour behind-the-scenes field tour, which is offered from May 2 – September 2 and includes a look at the Press Box, Dugout, Batting Cages, Home Plate Club and more.

12. Hike to Brandywine Falls.

There are more than 70 waterfalls in Cuyahoga Valley National Park, but the 60-foot Brandywine Falls is by far the most popular.

The hike to the waterfalls is just 1.5 miles along the Brandywine Gorge Trail.

The trail is a loop and offers great views of Brandywine Falls, particularly in the fall as the leaves are changing colors.

If you don’t want to hike to Brandywine Falls, there is an overlook near the Inn at Brandywine Falls.

For more waterfalls, try the .5-mile Buckeye Trail loop which leads to Blue Hen Falls.

You can also access Buttermilk Falls from this trail. Or, take the Bridal Veil Falls Trail. It’s an easy .25-mile hike to the falls from the trailhead.

13. Walk Around Public Square.

In the heart of Downtown Cleveland, you’ll find Public Square, a beautiful open area that provides public space for outdoor concerts, movies and farmers markets.

Despite the fact that Public Square was maybe three blocks from my hotel, I managed to miss this entirely, though I can see that it’s quite lovely.

In summer, Public Square offers all kinds of events, including Tunes & Trucks every Tuesday and Yoga on the Green every Wednesday evening.

Public Square will even host a National Yo-Yo Day Celebration in June. It’s a great place to relax and people-watch all afternoon.

14. Learn About Money at the Federal Reserve.

Everyone loves money and kids will love a visit to the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland to explore the Learning Center and Money Museum.

Kids can track counterfeit money and learn all about the history of money through time. Even better, this Cleveland museum is free.

The Learning Center and Money Museum are only open Monday-Thursday from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm so keep that in mind if you want to visit.

Fortunately, it’s nestled right downtown and you can easily loop this in with a visit to the Great Lakes Science Center or Cleveland Public Library.

15. Visit the Cleveland Botanical Garden.

There’s a lot to see and do at the Cleveland Botanical Garden with kids, including the Hershey Children’s Garden and the Eleanor Armstrong Smith Glasshouse.

The latter features all kinds of strange plants and more than 50 different types of birds, reptiles and butterflies.

The botanical garden should is a hit on its own, but kids will love the Nature Connects exhibit, which features sculptures made from LEGO bricks.

We checked this out last year when it was at Brookgreen Gardens in Myrtle Beach. Look for a giant tortoise, a seven-foot long dragonfly, even a colorful peacock, all made from LEGO bricks.

What are your favorite things to do in Cleveland with kids? I’d love to hear some for your top picks.

If you’re looking for the best things to do in Pigeon Forge with kids, you might be feeling a little overwhelmed, but we’ve got you covered.

This unique town almost feels like a theme park itself, with hundreds of things to do and see!

A few years ago on a family vacation, we spent time in Pigeon Forge in Sevier County, Tennessee as part of our epic cross-country road trip.

It was our first stop and one of my favorite destinations on our massive 10,000+ mile journey thanks to a blend of scenic natural beauty and family-friendly attractions.

Pigeon Forge is a stone’s throw from Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in the United States.

It’s also home to loads of super kid-friendly attractions and shows, like WonderWorks and the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel.

In this article, we’re taking a look at the top 15 Pigeon Forge kids-and-family friendly activities. Let’s get started.

Things to Do in Pigeon Forge with Kids

So, what are some top things to do in Pigeon Forge for kids and families?

Whether you’re looking for scenic views and outdoor activities or indoor and educational things to do, this article has you covered.

#1: Ride the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel

At The Island in Pigeon Forge, look to the sky for the 200-foot tall Great Smoky Mountain Wheel. It’s one of the tallest attractions in the Southeast.

It’s fun for the whole family by day, but completely awe-inspiring at night to watch it revolve when it’s all lit up. A total must while in Pigeon Forge. As a bonus, it’s pet friendly too.

#2: See a Musical Dinner Show

Dinner shows are a must while in Pigeon Forge for families. Try Dolly Parton’s Stampede.

You’ll be in for a four-course family dinner and an exciting, toe-tapping show that includes horses, bluegrass music, a patriotic salute and more.

Another top pick for all ages is the Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud for clogging, yodeling and comedy. Alternatively, check out the 75-minute Wonders of Magic variety show.

#3: Play Arcade Games

While at The Island in Pigeon Forge, take your kids to Arcade City.

This was one of our first stops at The Island and my kids quickly found high payout games (as in, games that dispense loads of tickets to cash in for cool prizes).

We left the arcade with a giant inflatable crayon, two water balloon launchers and lots and lots of candy.

#4: Explore Wildwood Grove

Make a beeline for new family attractions at Wildwood Grove, an expansion at Dollywood.

Centered around a “Wildwood Tree,” the tree will be aglow with multicolored lights after dark, as if they are colorful butterflies fluttering in the breeze.

At Hidden Hollow, a secret play area beckons that’s just right for jumping, crawling and climbing. Look for a new light show with fireworks and drones.

#5: Play a Round or Two of Mini Golf

There are at least a half-dozen mini golf courses on Parkway in Pigeon Forge (yes, the main road is simply called “Parkway”).

They’re all over-the-top too, like Crave Golf Club.

Here you’ll find sugary-sweet obstacles, like ice cream cones, candy canes and gumballs, spread across this 19 hole rooftop mini golf course.

There’s an indoor mini golf course too.

#6: Hike to Clingmans Dome

The entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park is 5-6 miles from Pigeon Forge. Stop in the Sugarland Visitors Center, then drive 45 minutes to Clingmans Dome.

It’s a .5-mile hike (I can’t lie, it’s steep) to the observation tower, but the views and scenic beauty from the highest point in all of Tennessee are fantastic.

After your hike, enjoy a leisurely drive around the park. Most visitors that visit this highly-scenic national park explore the park by car, so you won’t be alone if you opt to drive.

The 11-mile Cades Cove Loop and Newfound Gap are among the most popular destinations explored by park motorists.

#7: Exercise Your Brain at WonderWorks

My kids love WonderWorks and not just because this interactive attraction is upside-down.

Play laser tag, shoot basketballs, lay on a bed of nails, get creative with a giant Lite-Brite set and blow massive bubbles at the Bubble Lab.

You’ll also find laser tag in a black-lit maze and a glow-in-the-dark ropes course. This indoor adventure park is so much fun for the whole family.

You could literally spend all day at WonderWorks-Pigeon Forge.

It’s one of the most popular things to do with kids in Pigeon Forge.

Also, check out the Titanic museum, which has rotating exhibits chronicling different aspects of the life and passengers aboard the Titanic, like a new exhibit honoring Jewish passengers.

Make one more stop before you leave the area at Beyond the Lens, a pop culture attraction.

Be sure to check out their FlyRide sensory experience that debuted in the summer of 2021!

#8: Fly on a Zipline

You can’t leave Pigeon Forge without racing down a zipline or navigating a treetop ropes course. Try Zip Gatlinburg for skyline views. Little ones five and up can ride on their own.

At Foxfire Mountain, you can ride on seven ziplines on a two-hour tour, including one that flies over a waterfall.

My friend Kath of FamilyTravelsUSA flew across ziplines at Wears Valley Zipline Adventures in nearby Sevierville. You’ll find the longest and highest ziplines in the region.

One line alone is 2,000 feet long. She said this is a must for any bucket list that includes family activities in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

#9: Hike the Appalachian Trail

Wait. What? Okay, maybe not the entire Appalachian Trail (as in, more than 2,100 miles), but if you hike to Clingmans Dome, look for the “Appalachian Trail” sign on the way down.

Take a few steps on the trail and strike a pose in front of the sign to impress your friends. Or, hike as far as you like on the trail. The views are magnificent in every direction.

#10: Enjoy Free Concerts at The Island

When the weather warms up, nightly concerts kick off at The Island. We listened in for awhile. The bands are highly entertaining.

My favorite part was all the comfy rocking chairs. It was no easy task to get out of the chairs, but we were all about maximizing family fun, Pigeon Forge style.

You’ll find Pigeon Forge attractions for families at The Island too, like Sky Fly: Soar America, a flying ride that takes guests over natural wonders and landmarks.

#11. Indoor Snow Tubing

While you’re near The Island, check out Pigeon Forge’s indoor snow tubing at Pigeon Forge Snow.

Open year-round, this unique family-friendly activity is a great way to cool off during the summer and hit the slopes year-round, Tennessee-style.

#12: Go on a Llama Trek

At Smoky Mountain Llama Treks, adventures with llamas can last an hour or as long as overnight. The popular llama trek along the Padgett Mill Trail runs one to two hours.

As a bonus, you can add a ziplining or rafting excursion on to your llama trek for a full day or weekend of fun. Kusco and JJ Bird are eager to meet you for your trek.

#13: See the Singing Santa

It’s Christmas every day of the year at The Inn at Christmas Place in Pigeon Forge. Kids will love the 12-foot Christmas tree in the garland-festooned lobby.

Look for the beloved “Singing Santa” to share a few Christmas classics every Thursday and Saturday evening.

Santa also pops by on Mondays and Fridays for a children’s story time.

Stay the night in a Santa Suite that includes a fully-decorated Christmas tree.

You may not be surprised to learn that The Inn at Christmas Place is located on Christmas Tree Lane.

#14: Stay in Yogi Bear’s Den

Book a stay at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg.

Kids will love Yogi Bear’s Den, a cabin that includes a full kitchen, flat screen TV, bunk beds and a picnic table.

Alternatively, check in to one of several glamping tents that sleep up to five people. Look for movie nights and scavenger hunts at the campground.

#15: Fly on the Alpine Coaster

For high-speed, high-thrills fun, ride the Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster for twists and turns down the mountain.

Billed as the longest downhill ride in the United States, kids and adults will love speeding down more than one mile of track.

It’s a great way to take in the scenery. The alpine coaster runs rain or shine. It’s also open every day of the year.

#16: Snap a Selfie at the State Line

Inside the national park, head to Newfound Gap. It’s about 25 minutes from the Sugarland Visitors Center.

You’ll find plenty of parking, a scenic overlook and the “Tennessee-North Carolina State Line” sign that was made for taking selfies.

Planning Your Pigeon Forge Vacation

You’ll also find deals and coupons for other Pigeon Forge kid-friendly attractions, like shows, trampoline parks and arcades, even the Hollywood Wax Museum.

Need a family-friendly hotel? Here are the top-rated kid-friendly hotels in Pigeon Forge, according to TripAdvisor.

It’s just off Parkway in Pigeon Forge and has a huge water slide, a lazy river and a diving board. Even I went down the water slide a dozen times.

Road trips are such an adventure, and road trip trivia games make them so much more memorable and fun.

If ever there was a summer for road trips, this is the one. Many of us are ready to travel, but some of us (raises hand) aren’t quite ready to board a plane.

To be honest, I’ve always been more of a road trip person than an air travel person, and let me just tell you, road trip trivia makes the in-car time go by quickly.

When I’m in the car on a long road trip with my kids, I like to listen to the radio, but this only lasts so long. It’s road trip games for the win on long car rides.

While I love games, I also love to hear what’s going on in the heads of those in my car, so road trip conversation starters are critical, too. And, so much fun.

Before you drive off this summer, whether to the mountains or the shore, plan to download, purchase or print out these fun road trip trivia questions and answers, games and apps, and conversation starters!

Best Road Trip Trivia Games and Apps

We all have plenty of mobile apps on our phones, but here are 10 more road trip trivia apps to consider to keep up the fun as a family while on your next road trip.

Word Lanes

Word Lanes is a clue-based word finder puzzle app that everyone in the car can play.

Simply call out a given clue, like “sportspeople who enter water from springboards,” and everyone can guess the answer. Hunt in the word search for the correct answer(s).

Trivia Crack

Trivia Crack is a reward-centered mobile road trip trivia app with six categories of challenges.

Similar to Trivial Pursuit, the first player to correctly answer questions in all six trivia categories, including Science, Art, Sports and History, is crowned the winner.

Jeopardy! World Tour

If you’re looking for things to do in Stowe, Vermont – look no further! Especially if you’re looking for things to do with the kids.

While many families flock to Stowe, Vermont for skiing and snow tubing, there’s so much to do in the area when the weather is warm like hiking, kayaking and fishing.

Over the summer, we spent time in Vermont as part of a three-week northeast road trip and we were not disappointed by the Green Mountain State.

We stayed in a townhouse rental at Stoweflake Mountain Resort & Spa, which was perfect for the five of us.

There were two bedrooms, a kitchen and a huge living area.

Even better, the back of the townhouse opened up to a pond and an open grassy area where the kids could run around and play.

It’s so nice to have loads of space to stretch out after a long drive in the car.

At Stoweflake, there’s both an indoor and an outdoor pool, as well as an on-site restaurant, Charlie B’s, which was perfect for breakfast and dinner.

If you want to venture off-property, we loved Piecasso Pizzeria, which is just a few blocks away.

Stoweflake really is in the middle of Stowe, so it’s pretty easy to walk or take a short drive to most places in-town.

If you’re thinking about an adventure in Stowe, take a look at my list of 10 things to do in Stowe with kids.

1. Hike the Stowe Pinnacle Trail.

For incredible 360 degree views, hike the Stowe Pinnacle Trail.

It’s a relatively short, though steep, hike up to the summit but you will be awed by the views of the Green Mountains, especially when fall foliage is at its peak.

Take a lunch and sit on the rocks to enjoy the views.

2. Get Ice Cream at the Ben & Jerry’s Factory.

In nearby Waterbury, you won’t want to miss the Ben & Jerry’s Factory, especially if you’re a first-time visitor to Vermont.

Take a free 30-minute tour of the factory to learn how the ice cream is made before scooping up a full-size sample at the end of the tour.

3. Play a Round of Golf at Stowe Golf Park.

Stowe Golf Park really is a “mini” golf course, complete with water hazards and sand traps. No windmills here.

The kids had a great time putting around after dinner. Even better, they sell ice cream treats. Perfect for celebrating mini golf victories.

4. Kayak at Waterbury Center State Park.

Check out some kayaks or stand-up paddleboards and get out on the water at Waterbury Center State Park.

The reservoir was so clean and clear. An absolute delight on a perfect Vermont day.

Your kids may also enjoy hiking along the Peninsula Nature Trail at the park.

5. Learn to Fish at The Fly Rod Shop.

We were lucky to be in Stowe on a Monday because that’s the one day of the week when The Fly Rod Shop offers its Junior Fishing Program.

My kids loved this three-hour class that taught them the basics of fishing. They even caught quite a few fish in the on-site stocked pond.

6. Get a Gourmet Snow Cone at Jackwax.

Only open in the summer, it’s a must to stop in Jackwax for gourmet snow cones. Look for tropical flavors like guava, fresh lime and mango.

Jackwax also has giant-size games to play outside, like Connect Four and Jenga. We could have stayed all afternoon.

7. Take a Ride to the Top of Mt. Mansfield.

At nearby Stowe Mountain Resort, plan to take the Gondola SkyRide to the top (well, near the top) of Mt. Mansfield, the tallest mountain in Vermont.

The views are fantastic and you can take a steep hiking trail from the gondola to the very top of the mountain.

8. Stop for Covered Bridges.

Since Vermont is fairly well-known for its covered bridges, it’s a must to stop for at least one.

I actually drove past one on the way back from a hike, turned around, stopped and took a photo of Gold Brook Covered Bridge (which I later learned was haunted, yikes).

9. Indulge in Apple Cider Donuts.

Cold Hollow Cider Mill in nearby Waterbury Center is the place to go for warm apple cider donuts.

You’ll also want to sample the apple cider and the array of mustards set out upfront with oyster crackers.

For lunch, walk across the driveway to the Apple Core Luncheonette.

10. Visit a Sugar House.

When in Vermont, visit a sugar house, even if it’s out of season (sugaring season usually runs between February and April).

We stopped in at Bragg Farm Sugar House in nearby East Montpelier to taste the maple syrup and hike the maple walking trail, before kicking back to enjoy the views from the Adirondack chairs on the deck.

Are you looking for the best things to do in Galveston with kids? Here are some of our favorites!

Last June, my kids and I had the opportunity to explore Galveston, TX as part of our cross-country road trip.

I wanted to mix up our trip stops, and less than two weeks into our trip, we were definitely ready for an adventure at the beach.

This was our first time in Galveston and we were excited to explore a beach town right on the Gulf of Mexico.

We were also thrilled by all the things to do in Galveston, like the amusement rides at Pleasure Pier and the aquarium at Moody Gardens.

Whether you have a long weekend, or even a week, you’ll find so many family friendly things to do in Galveston for all ages.

Here’s the scoop on where to stay, what to do and where to eat. Have fun.

Where to Stay in Galveston with Kids

After nearly two weeks in hotels, we were excited to stay in a two-bedroom bayside condo in Galveston that I booked through FlipKey.

The condo was absolutely delightful and we were so happy to settle in, if only for a couple of days.

A short walk to the beach, the condo is toward the end of Galveston in a quiet area with few hotels. So relaxing.

The condo has a well-stocked kitchen, which made it easy for the kids to get breakfast on their own each morning (I picked up cereal and donuts at a nearby Walmart) and for me to prepare a fairly basic dinner, like tacos, in the evening.

The condo is part of the Pointe West Resort and Beach Club, so we even had access to a large kiddie pool, a fitness center and a BBQ area. Nice.

The owners of this vacation rental were fantastic and made sure we had everything we needed.

Plus, it was easy to get into the condo using a security keypad after our drive.

Even better, it was great to have a washer and dryer.

Not that I wanted to do laundry on vacation, but it was nice to be able to do the wash from the convenience of the condo.

There are a lot of vacation rental options in Galveston, making it a great choice for families, but if you do want to stay in a hotel while in Galveston, there are several great picks.

Look to the Moody Gardens Hotel, San Luis Resort or TownePlace Suites by Marriott Galveston. All three are great for families.

10 Best Things to Do In Galveston With Kids

It’s easy to get around Galveston as a family.

Of course, it’s a must to splash around on the beaches, but there are a number of kid-friendly attractions across the island, like Moody Gardens and Pleasure Pier.

If you go, here are a few of my top things to do in Galveston with kids.

1. Moody Gardens

My kids absolutely loved Moody Gardens.

You can easily spend an entire day there and still not explore all of the attractions, including a ropes course, a waterpark, a paddlewheel boat, an aquarium and a rainforest experience. And, of course, the SpongeBob SubPants Adventure.

2. Pleasure Pier

For midway games and a giant ferris wheel, it’s a must to visit the Galveston Island historic Pleasure Pier. There are so many family-friendly rides and games, even a place to take antique photos.

There are lots of shops and restaurants at Pleasure Pier, making it the perfect stop for a bite and after-dinner fun with the kids.

3. Tree Sculpture Tour

Print out a map and walk around the East End Historical District in Galveston to check out all kinds of sculptures made out of trees.

There are 20 sculptures located in the historical district that range from a mermaid holding a clam shell to Toto from The Wizard of Oz. So cute.

4. Treasure Island Tour Train

For a narrated overview of Galveston, hop aboard the Treasure Island Tour Train.

This 90-minute guided tour covers 17 miles across Galveston, highlighting the historic homes, the downtown business district, the shrimp fleet, Moody Mansion and other key places of interest.

5. Moody Mansion

Take a self-guided tour to explore 20 rooms inside Moody Mansion, which was once owned by the Moody family, one of the most powerful families in Texas.

Be sure to stop in the garage for “Auto Fever,” an exhibit dedicated to the history of the automobile in the U.S. and Texas.

6. East End Lagoon Nature Park and Preserve

From hiking and kayaking to fishing and crabbing, you’ll want to head to East End Lagoon Nature Park and Preserve to explore nature in Galveston.

The nature park is also a great spot for bird watching and taking photos of animals and plants all around you.

7. Soak Up the Sun at the Seawall

Galveston’s famous Seawall Boulevard is the nation’s longest continuous sidewalk and a 10-mile long urban park.

The Seawall Urban Park is a great place to spend the day soaking up the sun, sand, and waves.

Plus, the beaches along the Seawall offer you access to many of the best things to do in Galveston including tourist attractions, restaurants, and more.

8. Galveston Island State Park

Activities at this state park include hiking, geocaching, swimming, biking, paddling, camping, relaxing, and more.

If your kids love being out in nature, you can’t miss this unique state park during your visit to Galveston.

9. Spend a Day at Schlitterbahn Galveston Island

This Galveston Island waterpark attracts visitors from all over and is a great place to spend an entire day.

The Schlitterbahn water park has water rides, slides, and activities for all ages, including a toddler section in the park.

If you’re looking for a family-friendly waterpark adventure, you’ll find plenty of things to do here.

10. Fun and Educational Baywatch Dolphin Tours

Hop on a boat and take a dolphin-seeing tour with Baywatch Dolphin Tours.

These tours are kid friendly and pet friendly, too. Infants under 2 years old and pets ride free.

The Baywatch Dolphin Tours office is located on Pier 21 in front of the Harbor House Hotel, just a short distance away from Downtown Galveston’s historic Strand District.

Where to Eat in Galveston with Kids

There are a number of restaurants in Galveston that are perfect for kids and families. Here are a few to check out during your visit.

Sunflower Bakery & Café

Located in the East End Historical District, Sunflower Bakery & Café is a great place to stop for a bite while checking out the tree sculptures.

Look for fresh seafood, salads and made-to-order sandwiches.

Their burgers were even ranked among the top-50 in all of Texas. Try the Island Burger.

Shrimp ‘N Stuff

You can’t go to a beach town without sampling the seafood, so head to Shrimp ‘N Stuff.

Look for coconut shrimp, fish tacos, fried crawfish and plenty of po-boy sandwiches.

Hey Mikey’s Ice Cream

It’s a must to head to Hey Mikey’s Ice Cream where you and the kids will find more than two dozen flavors of ice cream, like Candy Bar Overload and Thin Mint Cookie.
