Paul McCartney performed his first-ever concert in Ukraine Saturday night (June 14th) in front of 350,000 fans in Kyiv`s Independence Square. McCartney played a 33-song set at the charity show, dubbed the Independence Concert, according to The Telegraph. Thunder, lightning and torrential rain were not enough to put Sir Paul McCartney off performing his first concert in Ukraine.

The free Independence Concert, organized by Ukrainian billionaire businessman Viktor Pinchuk, was also broadcast live on TV across the country and on giant screens set up in five other cities, and was televised to an estimated 10 million viewers. McCartney`s show mixed Beatles classics with Wings hits, along with several songs recorded over the last decade.

He opened the show with the Beatles`1965 rocker "Drive My Car," and went on to play most of his best-loved Beatles songs, including "All My Loving," "Blackbird," "Eleanor Rigby," "Penny Lane," "I`ll Follow The Sun," "Got To Get You Into My Life," "The Long And Winding Road," "Back In The U.S.S.R.," "I`ve Got A Feeling," "Let It Be," "Lady Madonna," "Get Back," "I Saw Her Standing There," and "Yesterday," before closing with a medley of "Sgt. Pepper`s Lonely Hearts Club Band (reprise)" and "The End", according to KBS.

The concert ended with two encores, concluding with Sgt Pepper`s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

As confetti in Ukraine`s yellow and blue national colors was scattered over the square, Sir Paul sang: "We hope that you enjoyed the show."

Ukraine, which gained independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, has played host to a number of well-known British performers in recent years.

Last June, Sir Elton John performed to 200,000 people in Independence Square, while the Rolling Stones rocked Kyiv`s Olympic Stadium in July.

Organizers of the charity event said money raised would be spent on diagnostic equipment for the children`s department of Ukraine`s National Cancer Institute.

Many children currently have to seek treatment abroad because Ukraine lacks the necessary equipment.

The concert was jointly produced by Ukrainian tycoon Victor Pinchuk, who is the son-in-law of former Ukrainian president Leonid Kuchma, and who is also the head of the Victor Pinchuk Foundation, the largest Ukrainian private philanthropic organization.

President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashavili also attended the McCartney concert.

A McCartney representative recently confirmed that an upcoming tour is in the works, but declined to give specifics. A new album is also rumored to be in the pipeline before the end of the year.

Ukraine-EU visa facilitation agreement giving positive results

A visa facilitation agreement between Ukraine and the European Union is giving positive results. The number of visas issued by the consulates general of EU member states tripled compared to 2007. The European Commission's representative in Ukraine, Bernhard Bogensperger, announced this during a public debate dedicated to Europe Day celebrations in Kyiv on May 11. Cabinet's press service reports.

He said that the number of visa refusals had decreased from 9% to 6%. 94 out of hundred people, receive Schengen visas. At that, Ukrainians have to pay EUR 35 to gain visas, while Belarusians EUR 60. These figures are evidence that the EU-Ukraine visa facilitation agreement is already in effect and is giving positive results, Bogensperger said.

A number of Ukrainian citizens, who also attended the debate, did not agree with his view. They said that now, it became more difficult to receive visas than it was before the signing of the agreement.

The deputy director of the consular service department of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Serhiy Borodenkov, while commenting on the situation, said that the Ukraine-EU joint committee involved in overseeing the situation with visa issuances had held its first meeting in April. The Ukrainian party briefed the EU on cases of violations of the agreement's clauses by certain consulates of EU member states. Borodenkov expressed hope that the European side would take into account all of the problematic issues.

He said that the agreement foresees significant preferences for Ukrainian citizens, while the preamble of the agreement foresees prospects for introducing free travels for Europeans and Ukrainians.

Ukraine to formally join WTO

UKRAINE will officially join the World Trade Organisation on May 16.
The former Soviet republic ratified its accession on April 10 and the WTO said it received formal notification late on Wednesday.

"Ukraine will be a member in 30 days from April 16," the WTO. said.

Ukraine, which with Russia and Iran is one of the last large countries still outside the WTO, secured a membership invitation in February after 15 years of talks.

Analysts say membership will give Ukraine a say in the ongoing entry talks of giant neighbour Russia.

The two have frequently been embroiled in disputes over their energy trade.

In January, President Viktor Yushchenko said he intended to use Ukraine's membership to reinforce Kiev's position in economic disputes with Moscow.
