Bakul Foundation and the US Consulate, Hyderabad in association with the Broken Scooter and 93.5 RedFM present Tracy Lee Stum,one of the best 3D street artists in the world. Tracy, who holds the Guinness record for the largest chalk painting, will do workshops with children and art students to expose them to this interesting art form. Tracy will be doing a chalk painting on the road herself as well.

We invite all of you to come and witness this great art and the artist on 6th Feb. The art but not the artist will be there to see on the 7th.

12 Tips to Improve Your Study Habits Next Term

How did your studying go last term? Did you spend time learning things as they were being taught, or did you end up having to go through caffeine-loaded, marathon study sessions the night before your finals?

Improving study methods a week before exams isn’t going to help. But if you get the right habits early on in the term, you can save yourself time and agony later.

What are Good Studying Habits?

I’m just another student like yourself. I don’t believe there is one perfect key to excellent grades that will work for everyone. But there are some common themes to improving study habits and not all of them require investing more time. In fact, most of these suggestions will be aimed at reducing your total time usage, by studying smart–not just hard.

I believe learning is a product of investment. If you make small, efficient investments in learning throughout the term you can spare yourself the frustration of cramming near the end. Your grades will thank you and your social life doesn’t need to wither and die to learn more each term.

Here are some tips for improving your study habits next term:

Use 30-Day Trials. Popularized by Steve Pavlina, trial periods work under the principle that by committing to a change for a month, it will become a habit. Since it is study techniques you want to reinforce, pick one or two habits and work on them for an entire month.
The Learn-It-Once Approach. Spend your time learning things as they come up in your courses. Attend classes with the perspective that you could be tested at any moment. It should only be material that you were just presented that you might not have had time to fully learn. Waiting before tests, assignments or finals is taking things too far.
Morning Review. Wake up a half hour earlier and spend that time reading from your textbook. If you’ve already read the chapters, spend the time rewriting the key concepts into a notebook. A half-hour out of your day in the morning probably won’t create a huge impact on your schedule, yet over the entire term it can be invaluable in boosting your understanding.
Link Courses to Daily Life. Spend some time each week looking for practical ways you can use the information you are learning. If you can find situations from your daily life that are similar to your subjects, they can go from abstract theories to concrete tools.
Background Reading. Invest some of your time each week in reading the background of the ideas surrounding your subjects. Pick out interesting topics in the news or books that make use of ideas from your field of study. Background reading can reinforce the ideas by connecting them with reality.

Set Daily Study Times. Set periods of time that you will spend studying each day. Once you spend a month reinforcing these learning periods, it will become automatic. Regular studying times prevent the need for cramming and can give you consistency in your schedule.
Cut Wasted Time. I’ve had classes where I received an A+, yet I attended less than a third of the lectures. I have had courses where I didn’t buy or read the textbook. Talk to other classmates about how the course is graded (mostly textbook, mostly lectures, etc.) and use that as a basis for deciding where to cut time if you have to. Skipping a class can be a good strategy if it means you could better learn the subject on your own.
Focus on Learning, Not Grades. Grades are just an artificial marker used to assess how much you’ve learned. While they are useful as a measurement tool, focusing on grades over understanding and learning useful ideas wastes your time. Look for ways you can use the material you are learning and focus on understanding it first, put grades afterwards.
Read Papers Upside Down. A good editing habit when checking over your essays and assignments is to read them upside down. This prevents you from speed reading the page and missing grammatical or sentence structure errors. This also gives you a better feeling of how an essay might be read through fresh eyes, letting you improve your style.
The 10-Year Old Rule. Pretend you had to teach everything in your course to a ten-year old. Could you do it? While advanced theoretical physics might not be comprehensible by a young child, the idea is that you should be able to simplify your subject into easily understandable pictures and metaphors. If you can do this for yourself, it will make your job far easier for remembering later.
Seek Your Professors. A great tip from Tim Ferris in the 4-Hour Workweek involves what to do if you get a bad mark on a paper. He recommends meeting your professor during office hours and asking for suggestions for improvement. Tim recommends that you exhaust every possible question, staying for an hour or two if you have to. By doing this you will not only have a wealth of information about how papers are marked, but your professor will also hesitate to give you a lousy mark in the future.
Schedule a Balance. Compress your work and studying into the weekdays and mornings so you don’t need to work all of the time. Good habits also involve taking time for rest as well.

PhotoWalk | Finally It Starts

Photo Walk, “Yes” the first event organised by KIIT Student Center. Ever since we started KIIT Student Center, my friend always asked, “What is this KIIT Student Center ? You attend meetings with the other Core Members but you don’t do anything. We haven’t seen anything organised by you. No events that you claimed will be organised.” I told them to wait as it takes time, we will soon have an event.

”Finally it started” Photo Walk was the first event started and organised by KIIT Student Center in association with KIIT Photographers Club. In this event [Photo Walk], photographers had to walk around with their cameras and photograph their surroundings. Recently the term has become synonymous with a group of photographers, walking in predetermined locations and then sharing their imagery. Alone or with a group, the purpose is still the same and that is to go out and shoot.

”Photo Walk” started from Big Bazaar, Patia to some 100-200 meters towards Nandan-Kanan. Photographers took various pictures of whatever they found in their surroundings while walking. The session was headed by Juggal Debata Sir, Faculty of Art and Media Sciences in KIIT. It was a great event.

Zuck’s Sis Quits On Him | Randi Zuckerberg Is Leaving Facebook

Facebook's director of marketing Randi Zuckerberg, sister of the social network's billionaire founder Mark Zuckerberg, is leaving her brother's company to start her own social media consulting company RtoZMedia.

Randi, who has been with Facebook for the last six years, said she feels it is the "perfect time" to move outside of Facebook to build a company focused on the "exciting trends underway in the media industry."

According to her resignation letter posted on the website AllThingsD, Randi said she has focussed on innovating and pushing the media industry forward by introducing new concepts around live, social, participatory viewing.

"We have made incredible progress, but there is still much to be done and other ways I can affect change."

A prominent name in Silicon Valley, Randi has been on maternity leave for the last three months. She was recently nominated for an Emmy award in the category of live coverage of a current news event for her work on 'Facebook Live', a real-time news show she created and hosted for the company.

A Visual Tour of Facebook India Office: What Happens Inside

Few months back, Facebook opened its first office in Asia at Hyderabad (India), popularly also known as "Cyberabad” to extend its multi-lingual support base.

The office, covering about 50,000 sq. foot ground is currently powered by 300+ people who look after the 10 million+ active users in India and other countries in Asia.

For those who haven’t seen it yet, the office has been beautifully designed and the walls have been decorated with some awesome graffiti. Here are some pictures:

Indian or American Programmers: Who is the Best?

Online career development community GILD recently compared the math, logic, software development and communication skills of programmers living in India with those of programmers living in America, based on the results of various assessments they have undergone.

Here is a summary of the assesments based on Gild’s data, based on the CIO report:

Indian programmers appear to be better at math and logic than American programmers. The Indian developers who participated in math and logic assessments outscored their American counterparts by 11 percent.
Americans slightly outperformed Indian developers on mainstream programming languages, such as C, Java and SQL, where they scored eight percent higher on C and nine percent higher on Java and SQL.
American software developers are particularly good at Web programming. When tested on PHP and HTML, American programmers’ scores were respectively 53 and 27 percent higher than their Indian counterparts.
American developers also have a better grasp of the English language, as noted in their scores on tests of their English communication skills, which were 33 percent higher than Indian developers.

Its a .xls file that opens in MS-Excel. I want to inform you since many of you may fail to notice it. The Excel file has different tabs for different Branches. So do check it out.

Also, I wanted to inform you that if there are seats left in any branch, KIIT Officials call each student (May be as per their Branch Sliding List they provided) if they want to take that branch. Last year students were offered IT (4 yrs.) by this method. The option was also given to the students who already opted for Dual Degree Course (i.e. 5 yrs.).

A New Semester and a New year of your course is going to begin. One step forward to the end of your College Life. Time passes so quickly when you are enjoying it. My last year in KIIT passed the same. It was so much fun with friends and group studies. College Life is totally awesome. Now moving on to the next Semester I am dying to go back to my friends in college.

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Japan celebrates Super-30, a film & a book in pipeline

INDIANS have always been popular in Japan. Celebrating the cultural and economic ties between the two countries, a new Japanese book on India’s recent economic growth features Bihar’s mathematician Anand Kumar of Super 30 fame as “ one of the forces responsible for rapid progress of India”. The book, Indo No Shougeki , has been researched and written by journalists of the famous NHK television channel and has been brought out by a leading publishing house called Bhushan.

In an exclusive chapter on Anand, the book chronicles his struggle as well as his success with his pioneering coaching institute Super 30. Anand had set up the institute in Patna eight years ago to help poor students make it to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology ( IITs).

“ This book revolves around the story of India’s development and dwells on key areas which have propelled its growth. It also says that education is at the root of India’s progress,” Anand said.

The book — priced at 1,800 yen ( ` 990) — says people like Anand are lending strength to India’s rapid progress and advancement.

It describes in detail how Anand, who himself could not go to Cambridge for want of money, has been helping talented students from the underprivileged families to rise up the ladder and pursue higher education.

“ The book is quite popular among the students of Japan Management School,” Anand said. “ They also have plans to visit Super 30 and see how this institution runs,” he added.

Takyuki Doi, a student from Tokyo, recently visited Patna and met Anand. “ We had seen and read a lot about Super 30 through TV programmes and newspapers.

Many students want to come here. Anand is doing a wonderful job,” he said.

Anand said the success of Super 30 was mainly because of his dedicated team of teachers and students, who work hard to achieve their goal. “ I am happy with the recognition Super 30 has received internationally.

This gives me the strength to continue,” he said.

Anand’s work had been highlighted earlier in Japan. In the past few years, several newspapers, magazines and TV channels have covered the success of his Super 30 institute, which has so far helped 236 students clear the highly competitive IIT- Joint Entrance Examination.

Recently, Yuta Amma, director of Japan’s popular TV channel, Kansai Telecasting Corporation, had visited Patna to make a documentary on Anand.

Yoichi Itoh, chief economist of Japan’s STB Research Institute, had also visited Patna to make an hour- long documentary for the NHK channel, which had evoked a tremendous response in Japan.

Earlier, impressed by Anand’s work, former Miss Japan Norika Fujiwara had also landed in the state capital to make a film on Super 30. Japan’s leading newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun had also carried an exhaustive feature on Anand and his Super 30 institute.

In 2003, Anand had set up Super 30 to provide free coaching, food and accommodation to 30 poor children selected through a written test, every year. His institute has drawn worldwide attention, but it is the Japanese who seem to be most impressed by him.

Google+ lets you form an exclusive circles of friends
YOU MIGHT have noticed your friends’ mugshots popping up on your Gmail page of late and a black strip over the Google search page.

These are subtle signs of Google rolling out a new social networking product, the search giant’s answer to Facebook at last.

Google+, which the company released selectively on Tuesday, is meant to be more private, smarter, and at the same time more pervasive than other social networking sites. It could also be integrated with your mail, search and news functions.

Google said it is all kosher — just a nice way to be in touch.

“With a smile, a laugh, a whisper or a cheer, we connect with others every single day,” said Vic Gundotra, Google’s senior vice president, engineering.

Gundotra, a former Microsoft veteran of Indian origin, led Google’s efforts at social media, including Buzz. His Google+ profile says: “ Fell in love with the power of software at age 11, and am still in love.” The man behind the project stressed on the subtlety of relationships broken by rigid online tools, saying, “ We aim to fix it.” In his roll-out blog, Gundotra took many digs at Facebook: “ Today’s online services turn friendship into fast food — wrapping everyone in “ friend” paper.” Google+ allows you to form exclusive circles of friends, such as family, colleagues, neighbours, and mad ones. Its ‘ spark’ option, allows conversation on hobbies and attractions. ‘ Hangouts’ is for people to “ stop by and say hello”, like you do “ inside a pub or on a front porch”. So, you are not available to everyone always.

So, what exactly is Google+??

Google+ lets you add your location to every post, upload photos, and group messages for a play or party — with a mobile version on the anvil.

Like in the first days of Gmail, very few people have seen it.

The Google Marketing Strategy!!

“They are creating a buzz around it to generate user interest,” commented Anivar Aravind, a social networking observer in Bangalore. Aravind said it comes after Google network options like the Orkut and Buzz that did not go viral."

“They are trying to add some novelty,” said Asheesh Raina, principal research analyst at Gartner, in Mumbai. “ It is better to rebuild and re-market. Now they want to replicate the success of Facebook.” Making money from friendships, Facebook is threatening an older company that made a business out of search. According to com- Score Data Mine, in May, Google Sites became the first web property to surpass one billion unique visitors, with an eight per cent annual growth. Microsoft sites came second with 905 million, followed by Facebook with 713.6 million.

Facebook grew faster, though.

March data showed 43 per cent growth in users over the past year.

Observers like Raina see Google making more money, including in India with its mobile boom, with the networking platform piggybacking on other products.

Lessons learnt on time?

That is the worry of some. “Stop tracking and targeting me,” said Christian Wolff, a Hyderabad based researcher, a networking buff. “I’ll tell you when I want to be found.” Google top bosses said that they have learnt their lesson.

Recently Buzz, a sharing tool for Gmail users, drew flak for automatically bundling up user e- mail identities for the network. Google entered into a settlement in March with the US Federal Trade Commission over charges on deceptive privacy practices.

That, perhaps, explains more filters in Google+ than even in Facebook.

Latest Google+ Update: Google+ Invite Feature Has Been Shut Down – Vic Gundotra Speaks

We all knew this was coming. With the flood of anxious Google/Android loving followers rushing to get into club Google+, the demand was so huge, so “insane,” it had to be shut down.

Vic Gundotra had this to say on his profile:

We’ve shut down invite mechanism for the night. Insane demand. We need to do this carefully, and in a controlled way. Thank you all for your interest!

Summer Vacations

Summer Vacations... Some are enjoying it whereas some of the people are totally getting bored at home (Like Me). KIIT gives a very long Summer Vacations to students in comparison to other colleges (One of the reasons why I wanted to be in this college). Some of you must have joined some summer courses and some of you might be utilizing time on your interests like Painting, Dancing, Reading Novels, Listening to lots and lots of Music. I didn't joined any summer course though I should have joined one and was passing time only sleeping and eating food cooked by Mom at home like some of you maybe. And they extended the vacation for a week more. Earlier I thought it would be so good to have long vacations but after getting it, I totally think that why does our college gives so long Summer Vacation. I am missing all the fun with my friends getting totally bored at home. Recently I took the job of designing this website which is quite time taking, so it helped me pass some of time. Still 2 Weeks remain and I am waiting for the day desperately when this vacation ends.
