Gastronomic Delight: Bopis in Indonesia

Happy Friday!

During the Long weekend my friends planned of a small get together as breather from all the english conversations and of course, catching up with one another. Since pork is hard to find in here, we have decided to have Bopis (beef lights cooked with vinegar and bell pepper), which I have never tried cooking.

I called my husband for help and since none of us have cooked it, he called his mom who's a great cook. :) Anyways, yeah I cooked Bopis for the very first time.

For those of you who's intrigued, cooking bopis is very easy. the downside of this meal is the chopping as it needs a LOT of arm work to get the right chop for the beef lights. If you opt to use chopper, you may do so but it might be too small.

Anyways, here's how to make bopis. You will need the following:

Garlic
Onion
bell pepper
Vinegar
Anatto oil (atsuete oil)
beef lights
beef lights stock

All of the above ingredients are chopped according to liking.

For the steps:
1. Boil the beef lights. My mother-in-law said that on the first boil of the beef lights, turn off the heat, throw the water and refill with a new one, this process will ensure that the beef is cleaned from all nasty stuff that's in the lights.

2. After boiling, let the lights cool and chop it.

3. On a pan, put some oil (or anatto oil) and saute garlic and onion and beef lights. Make sure that the oil is enough to cover the lights so as not to have it stick on your pan.

4. add the stock (if you forgot to keep the stock, you may use chicken or beef stock) . put the vinegar

5. when the vinegar is cooked, put the bell pepper. and

6. you can opt to have it dry or with a little of the stock. I prefer mine dry.

color is the way it is because they do not have anatto seeds here. the taste is still the same.

Bopis is usually seen in gatherings in the Philippines and some people often pair it with:

no alcohol but has the bitter taste because of the malt. :)

Gastronomic Delight: Indonesia's Sate Ayam

Selamat Malam! (Good evening in Bahasa)

Today I will share another street food to you that is famous here...and that is, Sate Ayam. As we all know, sate or satay is a dish of marinated, skewered and grilled meat, served with a sauce (from wikipedia). And as a Filipino I believe we are lovers of skewered food such as barbeque, isaw, etc.

Sate can vary from beef (sate daging). goat (sate kambing) and chicken (sate ayam). It is grilled to perfection and served with peanut sauce. Yes, you heard me right, they serve their satay with peanut sauce and sambal for they are not used to the taste of vinegar. In fact, their local vinegar is 25% edible acetic acid (oh, they don't have fish sauce here too).

Sate can be bought anywhere in the city. But you have to be very careful with where you buy just to be sure that it is safe.

peanut sauce..we decided to separate the it in fear of having an upset stomach.

our dinner...nasi goreng, mie goreng and sate ayam...the milk is for neutralizing the chili. lol

Just like the nasi and mie goreng, price depends on where you buy. But the one I bought is 11,000 rupiah for 10 pieces (55 pesos/10 pieces, approx. $1.50 USD). The taste is a little sweet because of the soy sauce they used to brush on the meat as it was grilled.

Sate is not only available in Jakarta. I believe it is available all over indonesia. So if you have plans on going to Bali, make sure you'll try this.

Happy Wednesday!

Just got back from a long weekend and it was one great 4-days of bumming around, watching DVD and full of munching. hhahhahha!

Anyways, I thought my kids would never notice my eyes. For one, I have big, deep seated eyes and them being too busy playing will make it impossible to notice what I do. But one lazy Tuesday, one of my "kikay" students noticed my eyeshadow and said that she liked the color. After that, she asked if I can put pink, but I am not a fan of pink. So she ended up asking if I can put on a yellow eyeshadow...

Yellow? I like yellow but I am scared to wear it because I am morena and I feel that it will not suit my color. Anyways, I took the challenge. Here's what I ended up creating...

Happy Friday!!

The school had a Chinese New Year celebration this morning and we were asked to wear "cheongsam" a traditional chinese dress. Since I am not a fan of dresses, i opted to get the blouse one and here's my super simple outfit

As for the makeup, I just put another neutral look so that I will not over power the top but i realized, I need something bold for my lips. So, I used NYX round lipstick in Snow White...Yeah the snow white for the title is just the name of the lipstick and not me playing a role or something...lol

I am looking forward to weekend cause it will be a long weekend here (Saturday to Tuesday). Since the school is dominated by our Chinese friends, they have a very long weekend because of the coming New Year. ;)

Anyways, I want to share my look for today which is neutral e/s. I am a fan of smokey and neutral eye shadows as the smokey brings sexiness and the latter shouts simplicity. I must say it was hard choosing the right color that will easily be seen because I am tanned.

Look: A Blue Monday

Halo!

Happy Thursday! Its been raining like crazy here as if there’s a storm. I’ve been praying for class suspension but unfortunately, they don’t have it here and they don’t acknowledge it.

And for you ladies who have heard of the earthquake in Indonesia, I am more than glad to inform you that the said 7.3 magnitude quake is far from Jakarta and it has harmed nobody because the shake was 30 feet under sea level. There has been aftershocks and a tsunami alert was given but took it back two hours after.

Anywho, my Monday was not blue, the weather feels like it that’s why I opted for a blue eye shadow to go with the weather and to welcome back my students with a bang! LOL. I know it sound crazy working with nursery students and having a blue eyeshadow on the first day of class, but hey, I was able to pull it off and some of my students liked it! Hahaha!!

I went shopping to buy some of my personal stuff to bring here in Jakarta. And to my surprise, my favorite feminine wash had a bottle overhaul. It looks like this:

Yay because:

packaging is so cute
the sexy bottle is now easier to handle as this doesn't slide because of the concave middle which helps you grip the bottle.
product will be finished until the last drop.

Nay because:

as soon as you open the cap, product squirts because of gravity which I find it wasteful.

Russian in the Philippines

From the time I discovered red lipstick suits me, I fell in love with it. And a collection of red lipstick will not be complete without MAC Russian Red, right?

When I went home during the holidays, I made sure that the Russian red would be inside my bag and will be part of my looks in Manila. And, I succeeded! But before I show you how it looked on me, I want to share my thoughts about it.

MAC Russian Red

MAC Russian red is very famous everywhere. It is a bloody red matte lipstick that has a blue undertone which made me a little hesitant of the fear that it will not look good on me. But I was wrong..it will look good on everybody. I like its staying power for it lasted a good 4 hours with little drinking.

The downside of this baby is it is matte which has a tendency to enhance dry lips. But in my case, I lather some EOS, wipe it a little and put Russian Red on top. It worked really well as my lips didn't get too dry even after wearing it for 4 hours (unlike my Ever Bilena Matte Lipstick in Mauvey).

Another downside of this is that it is not budget friendly for some. But this is for keepsbecause of the pigmentation and its quality. And i do believe that every girl should have at least one red lipstick in her makeup stash. :)

Transit in Kota Kinabalu

Halo!

I am back in my room here in Jakarta, flight has been rocky due to the turbulence. But thank God, I am safe and sound here.

Before flying to Jakarta, I stayed in Kota Kinabalu for 24 hours. And that 24 hours was really a bliss for Kota Kinabalu is a place to stay when you need a very tranquil place to shake all the stress in life. :)

I have never hauled beauty products in Jakarta for I am scared to try their local brands. While the comfort of MAC, NYX, Etude House, TFS, Makeup Forever, PAC and the like were so available, it is a pain to buy because they are far more expensive (compared to the Philippines).

And no, I don't have any intentions of hauling because what I have in Jakarta were more than enough for everyday use. But, who can resist makeup? Here's my cumulative haul...

Hiyee! are you done doing your Christmas shopping? I am!

Anyways, I have had long hair since i gave birth to my dearest little boy. I have never intended to chop it down because I am afraid that short hair might go on his delicate skin and produce some allergies. But things changed when I flew to Jakarta for it is so freakin' hot in there! Imagine 34-36 degrees everyday? Good thing the school is air conditioned, that's why I didn't have problems dealing with heat and long hair.

But you know the impulsiveness in me, I tend to do something crazy especially with hair...so, let's stop all the talking and may i present to you the before and after:

Review: Etude House’s Moistfull Mask

What are facial masks?

Facial masks are clothe/paper that are pre-soaked in a solution that is suited to the need of your skin. May it be for dry, oily or ageing skin, one will definitely fit your need. Personally, I haven’t tried any masks. Before leaving Manila, I always have a normal to combination skin (as per my observation) and I feel that I don’t have the need to use it. And here comes Purederm with its different masks and the great reviews I from different people around the Philippines. Now I became intrigued, but SM Valenzuela does not have it.

But I think the heavens gave me favor because prior to my flight, I won the contest Thiamere (of on beauty stuff and what else) conducted errrr…4-5 months ago (yes I am reviewing it just now but don’t worry, I have my notes beside me while doing this.. J).

On to the review, the packaging of the mask is cute with the pink color and drop of water in it. Too bad I can’t understand the language as it is in Korean. Anyways, upon opening the package, you will see that the mask is soaked in its moisturizing solution. The mask is folded into two which is so perfect on anybody’s face upon opening. You are to put it for 10-15 minutes but I preferred extending it to 20 minutes as I used it prior to my Jakarta flight.

How I love the cool sensation it gave my skin! I felt so relaxed and so pampered that time. I just felt sad though because my face became itchy after removing it. L

Thumbs up because:

It gives a cool sensation upon putting on the face.
Makes you feel relaxed
Leaves your skin so soft and bright.
Will make your skin soft upon waking up.
Has a scent that is not too overpowering.

Thumbs down because:

My skin became itchy after removing it.

Overall, I would say that the performance of the mask is okay because it was able to give its moisture to my skin. Only my skin became really itchy after removing the mask, good thing it's just itchy and no rashes came out. :)

Will I try it again, maybe not. I am too scared that it might damage my skin. Other brands maybe... :)

Gastronomic Delight: Hand-pulled noodles from Mie Tarik Laiker

Noodles is one food that is always seen on our table during parties as it means "long life" for the person who's celebrating his or her birthday. May it be hand-pulled or instant, Noodles are LOVE! Agree with me?

Have you tried hand-pulled noodles in Kan-Zhou in Greenhills? That's our food tripping for today.... :)

Mie Tarik Laiker is like an ordinary fast food stall in a food court of the malls here in Jakarta. But never underestimate what this food stall can do to your tummy! Their food is oh so delicious and very satisfying!

Pangcit Goreng

Pangcit Goreng is a fried lumpia wrapper that has a small meat ball in the middle. It is filled with oil but it is really yummy!!! heheheh.

After this sumptuous dinner, we all left the mall full and wanting our beds at home. LOL

A sunny afternoon to you my fellow beauty lovers (well, it is really sunny here in Jakarta)! I am not sure about the weather in my country but I just hope you guys are all well.

I have been contemplating if I have to post this or not, but being in the beauty world, I think I should. So yeah, I have been a lover of nyx but last Monday I noticed that after using nyx megashine lipgloss (in Miami Babe which is my favorite) on top of my Ever Bilena lipstick, my lips started to feel itchy. I have been recently allergic to fresh prawns and crabs but that's it, nothing more. I thought maybe mixing two different brands might have been the culprit but I have been doing it for such a long time. I looked over the date of purchase of the two, but they are like 9 months old and they didn't give me such problems.

Come Tuesday, I put on the gloss alone and boom! My lips started to feel really itchy. Little bumps grew on the lining of my upper lips...I got scared that's why I threw it right then and there. Now I am wondering, what did I do wrong? Was the lipgloss' expiry date is early as compared to the others? Or maybe, just maybe, I may have done something wrong with it...

Just to be more careful, may I just remind my newbie followers (especially my students) that:

1. If you wanted to retouch your kissers after eating, make sure you are to wipe the lipgloss wand (doe foot) on a paper towel or tissue before putting it back to its tube.

2. Never ever share your lipgloss to anybody else. If you can't help it, please use a disposable wand. Or just simply put it on a clean lip brush and brush it on your friend's lips.

3. Always, check the expiry of your glosses.

Hello! I know I have been MIA and it is because of work and internet...yeah...my internet is kinda slow that's why I just sit back here and read posts (I can't even make a decent comment...huhuhu).

Anywho, I am on a two-week vacation because Indonesia (and all our muslim brothers and sisters) are celebrating the Eid al-Fitr (or the end of Ramadan). In layman's term, it is like the Holy week and Christmas rolled into one. So yeah, I am so free to write, in the hopes that my internet will be kind to me to make at least one post. LOL

What's with the title? Oh, you all know that I am not a fan of pink because (1) it is too girly for my personality (2) I am not really a fan. But because I am working in a pre-school environment and bold colors are no-no, I once tried creating an EOTD that has pinks and reds in it.

How are you all? Dang, I miss you all so much! Today marks my first month of being away from my homeland. I miss all the things so "Philippines" but I thank God for giving me friends who keeps me sane and keeps me busy from wallowing in depression.

Since I started my journey with beauty, moisturizer is one of the things that I am so scared to try. I may not have the most sensitive skin but I don't want to get all red just because my skin and the product don't go well. So to be safe, I used

But I stopped using this when I got pregnant because of my scare to expose my son in the womb in all the chemicals that I use on my face. That's when I opted to go "all natural". Fast forward, my dilemma of not being able to buy my trustee facial moisturizer duo from Human Heart Nature, I jumped back to Myra-e. Why?

It has vitamin E that is good for the skin and prevents aging.
water based that is why it is easily absorbed by the skin.
according to Pinoy Home brands, it has:

It has Glycerin acts as skin smoothener, softener, and lubricator and helps prevent moisture loss. This ingredient is also known for its moisture holding capability thus preventing skin dryness.
Pro-vitamin B5 has soothing effect on skin irritation, rashes and skin itching. Likewise, Pro-Vitamin B5 stimulates skin healing while providing deep moisturization.
Dimethicone protects the skin while helping to retain moisture.

It is cheap and available anywhere in the Philippines.
since it is not an "all natural" product, moving from one moisturizer to another will not be that too hard for my skin. :)

YES!!! NYX here in Jakarta! I checked the items and was a little saddened because their price is a bit higher as compared to my trusty OL store (digital traincase). But if you are to think about it, it would be cheaper here instead of buying online and having them shipped here. So yeah, I guess the price is just okay.

I feel bad for not being able to write that much. And I am sorry....

Anyways, I am here to share another food delight...Jakarta Street food!

Since my friend and I are busy with school work and preparations to the point that we can't cook dinner, we decided to try the street food.

Street food number 1: Mi Goreng

Hello earth friendly Manila Paper to wrap the food!

Voila! Mi Goreng

Mi Goreng came from the word Mi (which is noodles) and Goreng (which means Fry). Garlic, Onions, egg, veggies and chicken will be stir fried until it is cooked. To be followed by the egg noodles (which has the texture of Yakisoba instant noodles in the Philippines) then some spices on the side. You can choose to have it spicy or not spicy. Me, I prefer it a little spicy because I can't bear to eat it the way they want it. Veggies may vary according to the seller and of course, the more veggies, the more expensive it will be. The cheapest that I found is around 7,000 rupiahs (approx Php 35 or $.90 USD) and the most expensive so far is 11,000 Rupiahs (Php 50 or $1.25 USD).

Basically Mi goreng and Nasi goreng are the same. Nasi means rice, so it is just a fried rice. Just like Mi Goreng, price depends on the additional ingredients it has. I found one seller that puts mushroom and a little shrimp with the nasi goreng some sell it without. So if you're here, I suggest that you ask around first to be able to feed those palates with a good serving of Nasi and MI Goreng.

Health conscious people will surely not like it because (1) rice and noodles are carbs already; (2) it is so GREASY! heeheheheh.. but since I believe none of my readers are so conscious, I am so sure that all of you will love it!

I like both if I am to ask...especially if they will use the sweet soy sauce.

Girls' Haven in Jakarta

Hello Ladies!!!

Sorry for the lack of updates, things are getting a little tough here due to classroom preparations and all the deathlines that we need to beat. Anyway, I want to share my mall day last week. My friend and I have discovered a really great place to hangout whenever we feel so bored in life in our asylum. And the best part of it? It is just a 15 minute walk from our house!!! Isn’t great?

A little trivia…People here in Jakarta are really rich and fabulous. People inside the malls were all dressed up as if they are going to a dinner party and will spend the night at a bar or something. Full makeup, 3 inches heels and their clothes and accessories…Gucci, Versace, topshop, zara, charles and kieth, ferragamo, burberry, louis vitton…name the high end brand, and they have it! An example of an extravagant person would be the franchise owner of my school where she carries a Hermes handbag EVERYDAY! My jaw literally dropped when I saw the bag…lol

Anyways, as requested I will to show you the beauty counters I found in one of the malls…(I didn't check the prices yet...will do that next time).

I also saw YSL but I wasn't able to take pictures because it is in the center of the department store. Maybelline and L'oreal do have counters but they are in the Supermarket and not in the department store, I don't know why.

You drooling? I am!! I love what I saw, I just hope the price is almost the same as ours but from what I've heard, prices here are way higher than in the Philippines..we'll see...I have a year to explore them... :)

And before I end this post, I want to show you the traincases that made me want to buy it because they're on sale but unfortunately, I don't have cash during my visit...lol

I believe these is almost half a million rupiahs each! please do the math...hehehe

So there you go...its just the beginning my dearies... I've got tons of malls to visit...LOL
