First things first, bed bugs can happen to anyone and even I am not completely immune to any type of bed bug infestations but I am here to help with your battle against these ferocious little creatures.

Not many people were even aware that bed bugs even existed at one time but that isn’t the case anymore.

Bed bugs have been around for centuries feeding on humans like there was no tomorrow.

Archeologists have enough found fossilized bed bugs dating back 2,000 years ago.

What Does This Mean For Both You & I?

It means that bed bugs have been causing havoc for millions of people worldwide and it looks like they will continue to do so in the years to come unless we do something about it.

Bed bugs are becoming even more resistant to pesticides which is making them even more harder to get rid of which is the reason why many people that are dealing with bed bugs have decided to use all natural bed bug sprays to get rid of the bed bugs once and for all.

There are many questions regarding bed bugs that need to be answered which is why I have created this bed bug help guide.

How Do Bed Bugs Spread?

This is probably the most popular question asked when it comes to the topic of bed bugs.

It doesn’t matter how clean your home is, what tax bracket you are associated with, bed bugs are not picky.

They are parasites and will do whatever it takes to find a food source which unfortunately is humans.

What I am about to tell you may be eye opening!

These are just some of the ways that are helping bed bugs spread so fast.

Public Transportation:

Airplanes

Taxi Cabs

Buses

Trains

Cruise Ships

Think about how many people use the public transportation system?

Let’s just say only one person has bed bugs and they have to use any type of public transportation to get to work.

One person could be carry a bed bug in their clothing and possibly eggs and now another person comes in contact with them either by brushing up against them or sitting in the same seat as them.

Here’s some proof bed bugs on Philly bus

This makes you think right? Don’t worry it gets better.

Hospitality (Places Frequently Visited)

Hotels

Bed & Breakfasts

Movie Theaters

Restaurants

Nursing Homes

Doctors Office

Think about how many people are staying in a hotel, bed and breakfast, or in a movie theater at this very moment?

Let’s use the one person with bed bugs example again.

One person stays in a hotel over night knowing or not knowing they are carrying bed bugs.

They leave but the bed bugs stay.

Now, you and your family are next in line for a relaxing vacation staying in that very same hotel room that a person with bed bugs slept in just hours before you arrive.

Next thing you know you are asking yourself how you got bed bugs right?

Even Some Doctors Offices Are At Risk

Some people have an allergic reaction to bed bug bites. These bites swell up so bad and the itching is unbearable.

So, if this was you, what would be the first thing you did?

Call your doctor or dermatologist and schedule an appointment right?

And now you realize another way that you could of got bed bugs.

Purchasing Second Hand Items:

Thrift Stores

Garage Sales

Second Hand Furniture

Second Hand Clothing

Second hand items whether they are furniture or clothing are rising up to the top of the list when it comes to getting bed bugs.

You hear it all the time from people that they found out they had bed bugs and they threw away all their furniture.

Next thing you know, the furniture that was just thrown away outside has gone missing before the bulk garbage truck had a chance to dispose of it properly.

What do you think happened to that furniture?

I’ll give you 3 guesses but the first 2 don’t count.

Yep, someone in the neighborhood either saw your bed bug infested furniture and decided it would look great in their home right in front of that flat screen.

The point I am trying to make is, there are so many different variables to get bed bugs that it’s only a matter of time before these bed bugs visit your home.

This is why it might be a good time to learn as much information as you can about bed bugs so you are prepared in case the worse case scenario happens.

What Do Bed Bugs Look Like?

Bed bugs can be best described as little oval shaped bugs that are flat and can be red or light brown in color.

Many people say that bed bugs look like little apple seeds in size.

Bed bugs have 2 antennae on top of their head.

Bed bugs have small, flat, oval-shaped bodies. They are wingless.

Adults do have the vestiges of wings called wing pads, but they do not fully develop into functional wings.

Thy have a total of six legs (3 on each side) and they can be red, light brown, and rust color. When they feed is when their bodies turn red because of the blood.

How Do I Know If I Have Bed Bugs?

When it comes to bed bugs there are a couple of different factors that could set off some red flags that you have bed bugs.

Do You Experience Any Of These Symptoms?

1. Bed Bug Bites
2. Black or Red Spots On Mattress Seams, Box Springs, Pillow Cases
3. Bed Bug exoskeletons (Shells/carcasses)
4. Actual Bed Bugs Hiding in Cracks & Crevices

Bed bug bites are the first indication that you may have a bed bug issue on your hands.

If you are getting bites but are not seeing bed bugs this doesn’t mean they are not there.

Bed bugs usually feed at early morning time about an hour before sunrise. Just when you are getting your best sleep.

The bed bug bites will usually be in a pattern. Every case is different but some people may not realize they have been bitten until 3-5 days after the initial feeding.

Others will feel a burning sensation once bitten.

The bites will swell up and become very irritated. They will also itch very badly to the point that the skin may break which can cause infections.

How Do I Get Rid of Bed Bugs

Bed bugs have proven to be very difficult to get rid of.

Just when you think you finally took care of your bed bug problem they just pop up out of no where again.

One of the reasons why this happens is because bed bug could be in other areas of your home that you never even realized they were there.

Here’s Something To Think About

It is estimated that that 60% of bed bugs are not even seen during inspection and initial treatment because they hide in crevices, cracks and dark places.

Depending on the size of the bed bug infestation can determine how difficult it may be to destroy the bed bug infestation once and for all.

For a complete guide to inspecting these areas please check out the Bed Bug Help Center

When inspecting for bed bugs the first thing you are going to be looking for is the evidence of bed bug activity.

Besides the bed bug bites there are other clues that you can find that will let you know if you have bed bugs and where they are most likely to set up the nest.

Here’s What Kind Of Evidence To Look For

How To Prep Your Home For Bed Bug Treatment

Prepping your home for bed bug treatment might be a difficult process but it is a must.

The first thing you will need to do is remove all bed sheets, pillow cases, mattress covers, mattress pads and place them in a garbage bag and then tie it up in a knot.

Do the same thing for all clothing in your drawers as well and then take those bags of clothing and linens to your laundry area

There are bed bug laundry detergents that will destroy any type of bed bugs and their eggs that could be in your clothing and linens. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to bed bugs.

Wash your clothes in linens using 1 cup of bed bug laundry detergent per full load of laundry using high heat. Once finished, place items in the dryer and set on high heat for about 30 minutes.

While the dryer is running the next thing you need to do is remove all clutter from the rooms that you will be treating.

Throw away cardboard boxes if possible. These just add more places that bed bugs could possibly hide. Place personal belongings in plastic totes that have lids that lock into place.

Vacuum Or Steam Cleaning?

Once you have removed all the clutter in the rooms you will need to either or vacuum or steam clean the rugs, tile, and wood flooring.

Steam cleaning is an added measure if you have carpets because bed bugs could lay eggs in the carpet and the steam cleaner will get rid of those.

If you don’t have a steam cleaner then just vacuum up the areas but be sure to throw away the vacuum bag outside once completed.

This will keep the eggs or bed bugs from spreading to other areas of the house.

If your vacuum has canisters, dump the waste in the garbage can outside and wash canister in hot water and or wipe down with alcohol.

How To Destroy Bed Bugs

Now that you have prepped your home for treatment the next thing you need is a bed bug spray that actually works.

Many bed bug sprays out there just don’t live up to their expectations.

Like I mentioned earlier, bed bugs are becoming more resistant to pesticides that would kill the bed bugs in the past.

This is just one of the benefits of using Bed Bug Bully to destroy bed bugs.

Bed bugs are getting out of hand in many cities across the United States.

They have invaded cities across the pond and looks like there is no stopping them from spreading to areas close to you.

If you don’t have bed bugs now it could be only a matter of time until you will have to find yourself some bed bug spray that will get rid of bed bugs once and for all.

Don’t worry, you do have some help!

I am going to walk you through the process from start to finish on how to finally rid your home of bed bugs for good.

This step by step guide will go over the basics to bed bug removal including the following:

How Did I Get Bed Bugs?

I Don’t See Them But I Keep Getting Bit Up

How Do I Check For Bed Bugs?

Getting Prepped For Treatment!

How Did I Get Bed Bugs?

First things first, bed bugs are not picky. It doesn’t matter what tax bracket you are in or how clean you keep up your home.

They are parasites and they will do whatever it takes to survive. This includes hitchhiking a ride on your clothing and suitcases.

The point is, you must educate yourself on how to avoid bed bugs and learn how easy it is to get bed bugs.

Top Places Bed Bugs Use To Travel

Airplanes

Taxi Cabs

Buses

Trains

Cruise Ships

Remember, all it takes is for one person to be carrying a bed bug in their clothing, purse, or briefcase.

Once they sit down on a seat or even brush up against you, that one bed bug could hitch a ride on you and now you could have a potential bed bugs infestation in the works.

Places Where You Could Of Got Bed Bugs

Hotels

Bed & Breakfasts

Movie Theaters

Nursing Homes

Doctors Office

Thrift Stores

Garage Sales

Second Hand Furniture

Second Hand Clothing

I’ve heard many stories of people getting bed bugs from many different places.

People have told me that they threw out all of their couches and other pieces of furniture and left them in front of their house for bulk pick up to take to the dump.

Before the garbage men came to pick up the items, someone already took the furniture and placed it in their home not knowing that the pieces of furniture were infested with bed bugs.

Try to avoid second hand items as much as possible!

This has become one of the most common reasons why people get bed bugs.

If you still choose to purchase second hand furniture make sure to ask the place where you are buying from how they deal with bed bugs.

If they don’t have an answer then it is a good idea to stay away from it and move on.

I Can’t See Any Bed Bugs But I Keep Getting Bit Up

Does this sound familiar?

If it does don’t worry because you are not the only one asking this question.

Just because you may not see bed bugs at the moment but are experiencing bites or welts on your body, this is a good indication that you could have bed bugs.

Places Bed Bugs Could Be Hiding

Mattress and Box Springs

In The Walls

Behind Electrical Wall Outlets

Dresser Drawers

Carpeting

Next Door Neighbor (If In Apartment)

Bed bugs could be so small that you will need a magnifying glass to actually see them.

They could be feeding on you at night then crawling back to their nest which you may not know where that nest is yet.

If this is happening to you please be proactive.

Remember, the longer you wait the bigger the infestation will be in the very near future.

Please also keep this in mind.

Female bed bugs are more slender then the male bed bugs. Refer to the image above to see the difference between a female and a male bed bug.

A Female bed bug will lay about 5 eggs per day up to about 250 total eggs per lifetime.

This is why I stress the longer you wait the worse the infestation will be in the future.

How Do I Check For Bed Bugs?

There are many places that bed bugs can hide.

When first inspecting for bed bugs please keep this in mind.

They love to hide in warm areas

They prefer dark places

They stay close to their food source (Humans)

Bed bugs have been known to travel 20 square feet from the nest in order to find a source of food which is us.

Bed bugs are attracted to:

Our body heat

When we exhale a breath of air

When we exhale we give off carbon dioxide. This is like ringing the dinner bell for bed bugs.

These are some of the reasons why you may have bed bugs in one room.

Since you may not be able to sleep in that bed anymore you decide to move out to the living room or another room and sleep there.

After a couple of nights you start to get bit up again.

This is because they actually tracked you down and began to feed on you again.

Salami Slice Your Bed Bug Inspection

What this means is narrow down the room or rooms that you are experiencing the most bed bug activity.

Focus your inspection there.

It’s best to plan your focus on one room at a time because it can be too overwhelming to inspect the whole house at one time.

Start small then work your way around the home.

What Type Of Bed Bug Evidence Am I Looking For?

We’ve already established bed bug bites as the first sign you may have bed bugs now you need to look for even more evidence of bed bugs.

The most common types of evidence of bed bugs activity are:
1. Black stains
2. Red Spots
3. Bed Bug Shells (exoskeletons)
4. Actual Bed Bugs
Black and red stains can be found on sheets, mattresses, box springs, couches, lazy boys, even sheets and clothing.

The black stains are bed bug feces. The red spots are actual blood. When bed bugs feed on you at night you unknowingly roll over and squash them while you are sleeping.

Just like when you squash a mosquito blood comes out. This is why you may have blood stains on your pillow cases and sheets.

Here’s Where To Inspect For Bed Bugs

There are many places that bed bugs can hide and build their nest.

Here are the most common places that you will need to check first.

Mattress – (How To Inspect Your Mattress)

Box Springs – (Box Spring Inspection Guide)

Pillows & Pillowcases

Sofa & Cushions

Recliners & Chairs

Bed Posts & Wooden Frame

Dresser Drawers

Base Boards

Electrical Wall Outlets

Door Frames

Window Sills

Picture Frames

Closets

For a complete guide to inspecting these areas please check out our Bed Bug Help Center

Getting Prepped For Bed Bug Treatment

Once your inspection has been completed you will need to start prepping your home for treatment.

Getting your home prepared and ready will save you a lot of time in the future.

Step 1 – Removing Excessive Clutter

Even if you decide to call an exterminator or you decide to treat your home yourself you will need to prep your home.

The first thing you will need to do is remove all the excess clutter from your rooms/home.

If you have personal items that you store in cardboard boxes, my advice to you would be to throw out the cardboard boxes and replace them with plastic totes that have lids on them that you can snap closed.

The only reason why you should throw out these boxes is because they provide more areas that bed bugs can hide which will make the eradication process more difficult.

Step 2 – Removing Clothing

The next step will be removing all of your clothing from dresser drawers and placing them in a large plastic garbage bag.

If you choose you can remove the clothes from the closet areas and place them in garbage bags as well.

Remove all bed sheets, pillow cases, comforters, and mattress pads and place them in garbage bags.

Even if you have bed bug mattress covers take those off and place them in garbage bags. You never know if a bed bug could be in there and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Once the bags are full, tie them in a knot and place them in your laundry room.

This will keep the bed bugs from spreading to other areas of your house.

Step 3 – Laundering Your Clothing

You will then need to wash your clothing in linens in high heat. I do understand that some clothing will shrink at high temperatures.

There are bed bug detergents that you can wash your clothes in that will eliminate any type of bed bugs and even their eggs.

It would be a good idea to mix this detergent with your every day laundry detergent to wash your clothes and linens to prevent any type of bed bugs or eggs from surviving.

After you have washed your clothing and linens place them in your dryer and dry at high heat for 30 minutes.

Step 4 – Vacuuming The Area

Now that you have removed all the clutter in the first room of choice you will need to start vacuuming everything in the room.

The best vacuum to use is a HEPA vacuum that uses a filter that catches everything and keeps from spreading dust, bed bug eggs to different places of the house.

If you don’t have a HEPA vacuum then a normal vacuum will work fine.

Vacuum everything in the room if possible including:

Mattress and Box Springs

Carpeted Areas

Head Boards

Dresser Drawers

Window Sill Areas

Closet Areas

Once you have finished vacuuming up the areas it is imperative that you get rid of the vacuum bag as soon as possible.

Take the vacuum bag and place it in a garbage bag, tie the bag in a knot and take it to the trash can or dumpster as soon as possible.

If you are using a vacuum that uses canisters then dump out all of the rubbish into a garbage bag, tie it in a knot and take it out to the trash can.

After you have emptied the canister wash it out with hot water. Then for added precaution take some alcohol and wipe the inside of the canister just to keep from any bed bugs or eggs from surviving.

Step 5 – Eradicating Bed Bugs From Your Home

Now that your home is prepped and ready for your first bed bug treatment now you will have the option to call on an exterminator or get rid of bed bugs yourself.

If you think that you have a larger infestation on your hands and it might be a little out of your comfort zone to get rid of bed bugs yourself then call an exterminator.

Many times bed bug infestations are just too exhausting to eradicate by yourself and should be done by a professional.

Other times eradicating bed bugs yourself is very possible and may save you some money in the process.

In order to complete your bed bug treatment you will need a bed bug spray that you can count on.

I do understand that many bed bug killers over promise and under deliver when it comes to getting rid of bed bugs.

Identifying If You Have an Infestation

One of the most asked about question is

“How do I Know If I Have Bed Bugs?“

Many times people may have bed bugs and not even realize it.

Other times people are too embarrassed or too afraid to let anyone know that they may be experiencing a bed bug infestation.

In order to really know if you may have a potential bed bug infestation on your hands you will need to look for the most common evidence of bed bugs by retracing your steps and completing some inspections.

Yard Sale

Retrace Your Steps – Have you or any of your friends or family members have used public transportation or stayed at any hotels, motels, or bed & breakfast?

Have you purchased any second hand furniture or clothes in the past month?

Document if you have done any of these so that you can determine if its possible where you may have brought home bed bugs from.

Look For Common Signs – Many times it’s not easy finding bed bugs but there are signs or evidence that you will see.

Sometimes you will actually see a bed bug or small nymph crawling on the mattress, headboards, box springs, even behind picture frames.

Their bodies will be oval shaped red or light brown in color with 2 antenna on top of their head and a total of 6 legs (3 on each side)

Female bed bugs will look more longer and slender with the same type of color.

If you don’t see bed bugs crawling around you will then need to perform an inspection of the area of concern (bedroom, couches, and lazy boy chairs)

How To Inspect My Room For Bed Bugs

When inspecting your room for bed bugs you will need to inspect the following places:

Mattress – (How To Inspect Your Mattress)

Box Springs – (Box Spring Inspection Guide)

Pillows & Pillowcases

Sofa & Cushions

Recliners & Chairs

Bed Posts & Wooden Frame

Dresser Drawers

Base Boards

Electrical Wall Outlets

Door Frames

Window Sills

Picture Frames

Closets

You will be looking evidence of bed bug activity.

When performing the inspection the first thing that will give you a red flag are black and red stains around the mattress seams, box springs, sheets, and pillow cases.

You may also find exoskeletons (shells) of bed bugs as well. You may even find splattered blood on the sheets, pillow cases, and the wall behind the headboard area of your bed as well.

Preventing Infestations From Spreading

Preventing bed bug infestations from spreading is very possible if you take that extra step and put in extra effort.

Bed bugs can leave eggs on clothing, bed sheets, pillow cases, and other types of linens.

Place your clothing and linens in a plastic garbage bag and make sure to tie the bag in a knot. This will help keep the bed bugs from spreading to other areas in your home.

Take the bags to the laundry room and place the items in the washing machine using hot water. You can use normal every day detergent but to be safe you can wash your belongings

using bed bug laundry detergent that will kill the bed bug eggs.

After the washing cycle has completed place your belongings in a dryer and set it to high heat and let the cycle run for 30 minutes.

Vacuum the Rooms of Concern – Bed bugs can drop eggs in the carpets and area rugs.

You can use a vacuum cleaner (Hepa Is Recommended) so that the eggs will not blow away to other areas of your home and vacuum up the carpet and even mattress seams and box springs if needed.

Make sure that you throw away the vacuum bag to an outside dumpster immediately after using. If your vacuum uses a canister, empty in trash, throw trash bag away outside, and clean canister with alcohol.

Acknowledge & Advise – I know this is the last thing that you want to hear but if you think you have bed bugs or if you think a friend or family member has them please Acknowledge & Advise.

It might be the toughest thing to do but just be honest. Many people get bed bugs from a family member or friend because they were too embarrassed to Acknowledge & Advise.

Preparing For Bed Bug Treatment

Now that you have prepared your home for treatment you can now get ready to eradicate bed bugs from your home once and for all.

Once you are done reading this post you will have all the tools you will need to eradicate these bed bugs from your home and keep them from coming back in the future.

Let’s get started.

What Attracts Bed Bugs?

The only job a bed bug has in life is to breed and feed. Bed bugs are master hitch hikers and will do whatever it takes to survive.

Bed bugs are not picky and they will find a place to nest, build a colony, and reproduce like you can’t imagine.

The primary source of food for bed bugs is human blood but how do they know where to find it?

Body Heat

Our Breath (Carbon Dioxide)

Warm Dark Areas

When we are asleep at night is when the bed bugs like to come out and feed. They are attracted to our body heat.

When we breath we exhale carbon dioxide. Honestly, this is like ringing the dinner bell for bed bugs. When we breath is when they find us and they know exactly where to go.

Bed bugs like to hide and warm dark areas. They like to hide in tight cracks where they can squeeze into in order to avoid us as much as possible.

Although clutter around your room or home doesn’t necessarily attract bed bugs it will provide them with better hiding spots.

How Do You Get Bed Bugs?

If I had a dollar for every time I heard this question I would be a millionaire by now.

But seriously, this question is asked so much because of so many different ways you can get bed bugs.

You would be surprised how many ways you and your family could of been exposed to bed bugs.

Here Are Just A Few Bed Bug Hot Spots

Public Transportation

Nursing Homes

Hospitals

Thrift Stores

Garage Sales

Movie Theaters

Rental Vehicles

These are just some of the places where bed bugs can be living without us even knowing it.

Many of us visit these places on a weekly basis which now I hope this helps you realize how fast they can spread.

Think about this scenario. One person may or may not know they have bed bugs in their home.

They use any type of public transportation system to get to work or run errands.

That one person could leave a bed bug or eggs behind and they next person that comes in contact with the area has no clue what was left behind.

As you can see this is one of the reasons why these bed bugs spread so fast and most likely how they might have entered your home.

How Do You Protect Yourself From Bed Bugs?

Since everyone has a different way of life, there are many ways that you can protect yourself from bed bugs.

These are some of the most common ways to minimize your risk of getting bed bugs.

Confront Family Members & Friends

If Traveling Inspect Your Hotel Room

Try Not to Bring Home Used Furniture

New Apartment, Ask For Pest Control Records

Confront Family & Friends

I know this is probably one of the most uncomfortable thing to do but it’s a must.

Most of the time bed bugs get into your home is because a family member of friend has them.

They may not know they have bed bugs or they are just too embarrassed to admit they do.

The best thing to do is just ask them if they have bed bugs.

There have been so many times I speak with people that have bed bugs and they say “I know this person had them and they came over and that’s how I got them.” It doesn’t hurt to ask.

Besides, if the person has bed bugs they will understand why you are asking.

Hotel Room Inspection

If you are traveling for business or leisure you should always check for evidence of bed bugs. Check the mattress seams for black and red spots.

Check the couches and chairs for the same type of evidence. Also check behind picture frames. You may or may not see bed bugs or any type of evidence.

Never put your luggage on the floor, always put your suitcase or other belongings in the luggage rack. Hotel Room Inspection

Minimize Purchasing Used Furniture

I get it, sometimes there is a deal that most of us can’t pass up. The chair, or couch is practically being given away. Looks almost new, there’s nothing wrong with it.

Next thing you know you sit in it and you start getting bit up.

If you still need to purchase this item ask the furniture store representative how they get rid of bed bugs.

If they don’t have a plan in place that is your first sign to stay away.

Moving To New Apartment Records Check

If you are moving into a new apartment, the best thing to do is ask the landlord if there has ever been any bed bug infestations reported in the building or has the building ever been treated for bed bugs.

You may ask for proof but it is the landlords decision to provide this information. Also check the outside area and look for clues of any type of renovation.

Take a peak around the dumpster area or on the street to see if there are any mattresses or box springs that were thrown away.

Sometimes there might be mattresses that may look they are full of black mold but actually that is the bed bug evidence.

This is not a 100% chance that there could be bed bugs but why take the chance. At least you will have peace of mind.

What Does A Bed Bug Look Like?

Many people say that bed bugs look like apple seeds or small footballs with antennas.

How Do You Check For Bed Bugs?

In order to know for sure if you might have bed bugs is to perform a thorough home inspection.

This inspection will start from your bedroom and will carry on to the other rooms of your home.

Depending on what type of inspection you are experiencing will determine how difficult it will be to find evidence of bed bugs.

Tools That Help You Inspect

These are just to help you with your inspection and these tools are only recommended to make your bed bug inspection easier.

Rubber Gloves

Flash Light

Garbage Bag

Vacuum Cleaner

It could get nasty when performing your inspection and rubber gloves will keep your hands from having to touch anything you don’t want to be touching.

A flashlight will help you inspect the underside of the box springs and shine a light in the nook and cranny areas where bed bugs love to hide.

A couple garbage bags will help you either throw away any loose clutter or to place your clothes in the garbage bag so that you can tie it in a knot to take to the laundry room or cleaners.

This is to help from spreading bed bugs and eggs to other rooms.

You will need to vacuum up any bed bug shells (exoskeletons) that they drop after they molt. You can get away with using a regular vacuum cleaner but it is recommended to use a “HEPA filter” vacuum so that you wont spread the eggs and infest other areas of your home.

If you do use a vacuum cleaner that uses bags and not canisters. Get rid of the bags outside in the garbage as soon as possible. Empty the canisters after use as well to prevent eggs from infesting other areas of your home.

How To Inspect Your Bedroom For Bed Bugs

Many bed bug infestations start in the bedroom areas but can also start in other parts of the house as well.

When inspecting for bed bugs you will be looking for evidence of bed bugs.

The first thing to look for is black or red spots on any type of mattress, pillow cases, and box springs.

The red spots are actually your blood that the bed bugs fed off of you. The black spots is bed bugs waste or feces.

You may even see some of the reddish black smeared on your walls or headboard area of your bed. This is a definite sign of bed bugs.

While doing your inspection you may even come across some bed bugs as well.

Whether you like to believe this or not, bed bugs are spreading like crazy.

You may be safe from bed bugs now but the odds of you dealing with bed bugs in the future are growing each day and finding how to get rid of bed bugs is hard.

Bed bugs are now a global issue. Why do they spread so fast? How can we prevent bed bugs from entering our home?

What is the best way to eliminate bed bugs?

These are just some of the common questions people ask but we need to put an Anti Bed Bug Program in place and that’s what I’m about to do.

The Anti Bed Bug Program

The more you know about bed bugs and how they operate the better chances you will have to avoid them like the plague.

The Anti Bed Bug Program is to help educate people on how they can take the necessary steps to prevent them from getting bed bugs but also to provide help to those who are already dealing with bed bugs and help them find a solution.

So, get your pencils and paper ready, put your thinking cap on and enjoy this journey.

What Is A Bed Bug?

Many times my parents would wish me good night by saying “Night, Night, Don’t Let The Bed Bugs Bite.”

Even though I never gave it much thought at the time, bed bugs are an ever growing problem world wide.

Bed bugs are parasites that feed mainly on human blood. They like to hide in warm dark places.

They will build their nest in these exact same places close to their main food source… US!

They have also been known to travel up to 20 square feet from their nest in order to find food.

Here is the scientific definition of what a bed bug is classified as:

Bed bugs, bed-bugs, or bedbugs[2] are parasiticinsects of the cimicid family that feed exclusively on blood. Cimex lectularius, the common bed bug, is the best known, as it prefers to feed on human blood. wikipedia.org

Bed bugs can reproduce and spread at an alarming rate. This is why they are literally getting out of control in many major cities across the globe.

What Does A Bed Bug Look Like?

Bed bugs look like small brown insects that best resemble a little football with 2 antenna on top of their heads.

Bed bugs have small, flat, oval-shaped bodies. They are wingless.

Adults do have the vestiges of wings called wing pads, but they do not fully develop into functional wings.

Adults are brown in color, although their bodies redden after feeding.

They have a total of 6 legs (3 on each side) and have different life spans.

Life Cycle Of A Bed Bug

Egg Stage

Nymph

Adult Stage

Bed bugs start off in the egg stage. Then they will continue to grow through 5 nymph stages before they reach adult.

Female adult bed bugs can lay up to 5 eggs a day throughout their adult life.

How Do You Get Bed Bugs?

There are many ways that bed bugs can be brought home. The bad thing is you will probably never know you have bed bugs until it’s too late.

Bed bugs are hitch hiking their way across the world. They attach themselves on our clothing, luggage, briefcases, and purses.

They lay eggs in the process without us even knowing they are there.

Bed bugs use many of the same ways of travel that we humans do.

They also like to hang out in many of the places we humans like to hang out in as well.

Why you might ask? They are parasites and they will do whatever it takes to survive. Their main purpose in life is to feed and breed. That’s IT!

How Do Bed Bugs Spread So Fast?

Many times getting bed bugs is not your fault. It doesn’t matter how clean you are they don’t care.

They just consider us a food source.

Millions of people around the country come in contact with each other each day.

Many use public transportation to go to work, go on a vacation and stay at a hotel, or relax at movie theaters.

The point is there are so many ways bed bugs can spread. This is one of the reasons why they are spreading so quickly and becoming a “Global Issue“

Remember, all it takes is one female bed bug to lay 5 eggs in one day in any of these areas to start an infestation.

Have you used any one of these methods of transportation in the past 2 weeks?

Have you visited one of these areas and you may think you have bed bugs?

These are just some of the possibilities of how bed bugs may have entered your home.

As I stated earlier, there are so many ways bed bugs can enter your home but that doesn’t mean everyone is going to deal with bed bugs.

There are ways to make sure that your home is protected from bed bugs.

It can be difficult to prevent bed bugs from entering home but it’s not impossible.

Since there are so many variables of how bed bugs can enter ones home the best thing to do is be Proactive.

Inspecting For Bed Bugs Made Simple

When inspecting for bed bugs you will be looking for this type of evidence.

Actual Bed Bugs

Black Stains

Red Blood Spots

Depending on the infestation will determine how easy this evidence will be to spot. Bed bugs also give off a scent or odor.

The bigger the infestation the more prominent the scent will be.

Tools You Will Need

The tools are not necessary to complete your inspecting but they will help make the inspecting go faster.

If you don’t have any of these tools you can still complete the inspecting.

Rubber Gloves

Flash Light

Magnifying Glass (optional)

Garbage Bags

Top Places To Inspect

Bed bugs love to hide in warm dark places that are very close to their source of food.

They will also build their nest in these same places.

This is the first thing you need to keep in the back of your mind when completing your inspection.

One word of advice. If you have time to clean up your home of clutter please do so. Try to get everything as organized as possible.

The more cleaner and organized your room/home is the quicker the inspection process will get completed.

Think about it. You probably are already feeling overwhelmed with just the inspection. There is no need to make it more difficult on yourself.

It might take a little bit more time out of your day but it will be so worth it.
