Bed bugs are real sneaky pests. With their size and fast-paced movements, you can never really tell where they will be next. After a number of them had been seen though, it’s now confirmed that they have reached the Nebraska state.

Specifically, the pests were discovered in the ninth floor of the University of Nebraska’s Abel Hall last January. The dormitory is housing hundreds of students and two of them were the first campus victims of the blood-feeding creatures.

As claimed by the two female students, they had known about the bed bugs when they came back from their winter break. After knowing about the incident, the university then took actions to get the room treated. Just weeks after that incident though, reports now say that more of the pests were seen in two other dorm rooms and a student lounge.

Bedbugs have been sharing space with two students who live in a dorm room at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Ashleigh Auman told Lincoln television station KLKN that she and her roommate noticed the bugs when they returned to their ninth-floor room from winter break. The women reported the bugs to university officials after the roommate was bitten on her arms and legs.

Some bedbugs were found in a cork board.

Bed bugs have yet again caused chaos in New York. Because of them, cases in the city’s Housing Court will have to be postponed.

The blood-sucking pests were specifically discovered at the third floor of the Department of Housing Preservation and Development building last November 15. Their presence got the officials so anxious that they got five thousand boxes of documents shipped off for treatment. Everything and everyone in the said floor were also evacuated.

The boxes of files for the fumigation process was sent to a facility treatment in Rockland County. And needless to say, that and the fact that other papers weren’t backed up on computers paralyzed the office’s operation.

City housing officials got so antsy over a bedbug invasion that they shipped off 5,000 boxes of files for fumigation, forcing Housing Court cases to be postponed.

The bloodsuckers turned up at the Department of Housing Preservation and development around Nov. 15, leading to the evacuation of the entire third floor, which contains the tax-incentives divisions and parts of the housing-litigation and IT divisions.

Officials said that even though the critters were spotted only in isolated areas, a top-to-bottom cleaning was ordered, meaning everything on the floor had to be temporarily relocated.

Attorney Robert Stok, who is representing Palo Verde Investors, a subsidiary of the Aztec Group, Inc., said the units were badly overrun. ”The property manager said it looked like a war zone with blood spots everywhere,” said Stok, who added that the apartments have since been rendered bedbug free. “The exterminator said it was the worst infestation they’d ever seen.” Palo Verde Investors purchased the note to the apartments for $11.25 million while the complex off Forest Hill Boulevard was going through a foreclosure, Stok said.

Built in 1973, it had extensive renovations completed in 2005 and 2006, according to a news release written after the acquisition. Investors expected “both higher occupancy and growth in rental income” from the 276-unit complex, the release says. Instead, they were blindsided by bedbugs, according to the lawsuit filed against Nationwide Life Insurance Company.

A team of entomologists led by Coby Schal and Ed Vargo of North Carolina State University studied the genes of bedbugs infesting three multistory apartment buildings in North Carolina and New Jersey and found very low genetic diversity, meaning most of them were very close relatives.
