With their size and fast-paced movements, you can never really tell where they will be next. After a number of them had been seen though, it’s now confirmed that they have reached the Nebraska state.

Specifically, the pests were discovered in the ninth floor of the University of Nebraska’s Abel Hall last January. The dormitory is housing hundreds of students and two of them were the first campus victims of the blood-feeding creatures.

As claimed by the two female students, they had known about the bed bugs when they came back from their winter break. After knowing about the incident, the university then took actions to get the room treated. Just weeks after that incident though, reports now say that more of the pests were seen in two other dorm rooms and a student lounge.

============================

Bedbugs have been sharing space with two students who live in a dorm room at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Ashleigh Auman told Lincoln television station KLKN that she and her roommate noticed the bugs when they returned to their ninth-floor room from winter break. The women reported the bugs to university officials after the roommate was bitten on her arms and legs.

Some bedbugs were found in a cork board.

============================

No one can really say where bed bugs will appear or who will be their next meal. Hence, it is important that you are always prepared to keep them away.

To block their infestation effectively, you will need to detect their presence early. That’s not the only thing you need to do though. In addition, you have to eliminate the pests as soon as you laid eyes on them. With that, you can prevent them escaping and also from multiplying.

But without a bed bug spray, you can’t kill bed bugs promptly. And so, get yourself one and always be ready for a bed bug treatment.

Their presence got the officials so anxious that they got five thousand boxes of documents shipped off for treatment. Everything and everyone in the said floor were also evacuated.

The boxes of files for the fumigation process was sent to a facility treatment in Rockland County. And needless to say, that and the fact that other papers weren’t backed up on computers paralyzed the office’s operation.

=====================

City housing officials got so antsy over a bedbug invasion that they shipped off 5,000 boxes of files for fumigation, forcing Housing Court cases to be postponed.

The bloodsuckers turned up at the Department of Housing Preservation and development around Nov. 15, leading to the evacuation of the entire third floor, which contains the tax-incentives divisions and parts of the housing-litigation and IT divisions.

Officials said that even though the critters were spotted only in isolated areas, a top-to-bottom cleaning was ordered, meaning everything on the floor had to be temporarily relocated.

======================

Bed bugs can hide not only on clothes and luggage. Even in books and magazines, they can also be present. Proofs of that are the several cases of bed bug infestation in libraries. And given that, it was just right for the New York Housing Court to be anxious about their presence.

To kill bed bugs, you will first need to detect their presence. And if you can do that early on, you can prevent a major infestation. However, early detection will be of little use if you don’t have a prepared bed bug killer that you can immediately spray. Hence, it is important to always have a bed bug spray ready.

Among the many bed bug products available today though, the best that you can get is a green bed bug spray. With their organic ingredients, they can promise you a bed bug treatment that both effective and safe. Nonetheless, among the green bed bug killers in the market, Bed Bug Bully is the best that you can get. It’s advantage over the others is that it is of 100 percent biodegradable components.

Kill bed bugs effectively and safely. Pair early detection with a green bed bug spray solution.

And the battle, once played out largely in hotels with high international traffic, has moved to the home front.

Infestations are occurring in homes, hotels, hospitals, day care centers, college dorms, schools, movie theaters, department stores and even public transportation in every state. Don’t think you’re safe from the little blood-suckers just because you travel little or stay at only the best hotels, professionals say.

Bed bug infestations have little to do with cleanliness or quality. Bed bugs are notoriously hardy and just a few of the hitch-hiking pests – which you can pick up virtually anywhere these days – are all it takes to ultimately establish an infestation in your home or apartment. When the lights go off, the bugs come out, and bite and drink from any unsuspecting human who happens to be unlucky enough to be occupying the bed with them. While they’re not yet known to transmit disease, bed bugs can leave you with itchy welts – not to mention severe mental distress.

A Miami-based real estate investor is suing over a pesky problem at a recently purchased West Palm Beach apartment complex – bedbugs. According to a lawyer who filed the Nov. 23 lawsuit in Palm Beach County Circuit Court, about 25 percent of the units at the Palo Verde apartments off Forest Hill Boulevard were infested with the blood-sucking parasites at the time of the January purchase.

Attorney Robert Stok, who is representing Palo Verde Investors, a subsidiary of the Aztec Group, Inc., said the units were badly overrun. ”The property manager said it looked like a war zone with blood spots everywhere,” said Stok, who added that the apartments have since been rendered bedbug free. “The exterminator said it was the worst infestation they’d ever seen.” Palo Verde Investors purchased the note to the apartments for $11.25 million while the complex off Forest Hill Boulevard was going through a foreclosure, Stok said.

Built in 1973, it had extensive renovations completed in 2005 and 2006, according to a news release written after the acquisition. Investors expected “both higher occupancy and growth in rental income” from the 276-unit complex, the release says. Instead, they were blindsided by bedbugs, according to the lawsuit filed against Nationwide Life Insurance Company.

If bed bugs manage to move in despite your precautions, it’s not likely you’ll be able to get rid of them yourself. Just 25 percent of consumers try to treat bed bugs themselves before calling a pro, down from 38 percent a year ago.

At times, it can feel like you are battling a war against an evil blood sucking army of the world’s most irritating creepy crawlers, however, you can win! Rest assured, killing every bug, male, female, or larva will be promising once you take the steps that are recommended. Don’t suffer anymore. Don’t let these bed bugs inflict hysteria in your household any longer.

The last time the U.S. experienced a bedbug problem of this magnitude was the 1940s and 1950s, experts say. That infestation was handled effectively with pesticides, primarily DDT. But half a century later, in the late 1990s, bedbug reports began to resurface – this time linked to international travelers who picked up the insects in South America, Africa and Asia, and brought them back to American shores in luggage and clothing.

This holiday season, there may be more to worry about when checking off your Christmas list then packing, wrapping and reservations. Suitcases, gift packages, car rentals and hotel rooms can all be sources of bed bugs – those sometimes hard-to-detect bugs that made headlines last year across the world when what experts called at one point, a preventable outbreak, seemed all of a sudden unstoppable.

Bed bugs, which the Center for Disease Control defines as small, flat, parasitic insects that feed on the blood of people and animals while they sleep, and most people describe as just plain icky, started showing up, it seemed, everywhere in 2010 causing, in some instances, panic among hotel guests and travelers who feared for their skin every time they checked in. Though news reports on the subject appear to have died down a bit since then, the problem has not gone away.

The 2011 Bugs Without Borders Survey, conducted by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), reports that 80 percent of member respondents say infestations are increasing across the country and that nearly all professional pest management companies have received bed bug calls within the last year.

A lot of people will be traveling during the holidays and that can lead to an encounter with pests that like to join you. Polk County Health Department spokesperson Sarah Boese says bed bugs are not something you want to be a part of your holiday memories.

“Bed bugs continue to be a problem throughout communities across the country and the world, and we want to remind people know as they’re traveling to be extra diligent to avoid bringing bed bugs home with them,” Boese says, “because bed bugs really are excellent hitchhikers. They like to stow away in suitcases or on clothing and then come home, where they can develop into an infestation.”

Contrary to popular belief, you aren’t necessarily safe just because you are staying with someone you know. She says you should be aware of bedbugs whether you are staying in another person’s home or a motel. When you enter the room you are sleeping in Boese suggests you pull the sheets up and look along the cracks of the mattress for bugs, empty skin shells or little black spots on the cracks of the mattress — and also check out the bedside table.

Reports have attributed the outbreak to increased international travel, policies that banned some pesticides and limited knowledge, among other things. Travel almost certainly has something to do with it. The CDC says bed bugs are experts at hiding in luggage, folded clothes and bedding. People then can carry bed bugs without even knowing – to hotel rooms, where the next guest can pick up the bugs and carry them on and so on and so on.

In fact, the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AH&LA) said the increase in bed bugs has had “a minimal impact on the vast majority of hotels.” AH&LA urges consumers to remember that bed bugs are brought in by guests and that hotels are not to blame.
The New York Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has set guidelines for hotels, including the recommendation that they hire a licensed pest control company to regularly inspect the premises.

Often, though, a hotel doesn’t know there’s a problem until a guest comes down to the front desk pointing to a bite on their ankle – if even then. Experts recommend when traveling this holiday season, to keep your cool and do your best to keep the bed bugs away by examining mattresses, headboards and other easy hiding places as soon as you arrive in a hotel room, keeping your suitcase on a table instead of the floor, and unpacking your dirty clothes while still in the garage into a trash bag and directly to the washing machine.

Bedbugs aren’t just sleeping with you. They’re sleeping with each other. Researchers now say that the creepy bugs have a special genetic gift:

withstanding incest. It turns out that unlike most creatures, bedbugs are able to inbreed with close relatives and still produce generally healthy offspring. That means that if just a few bedbugs survive in a building after treatment, they repopulate quickly.

Bedbugs — and other insects — develop resistance to insecticides. If a treatment kills anything less than 100 percent of the bugs, the survivors will not only repopulate, but pass on the resistance they’ve developed to future generations. The problems we are seeing with bedbugs in North America did not happen overnight. at the moment, we have the highest concentration in the history of our species of humans living in cities. Bedbugs do not have wings; they are nest parasites, so our own population density has helped them to thrive.”

While bed bugs are not known, at present, to carry any disease pathogens, they are still an important emerging public health issue. And, with ever-increasing news coverage of the bed bug resurgence, the general public — your clients and potential clients — easily can become alarmed and confused. As a result, the need to stay well informed about the health and medical impacts of bed bugs is more vital than ever in dealing with customers’ concerns.

Inbreeding may be the secret to the bedbug’s success, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday. After nearly disappearing in the United States, the bloodsucking pests have made a comeback in recent years, quickly infesting apartment buildings and stubbornly resisting common insecticides.

The city of New York alone spends as much as $40 million a year in bedbug control. A study of bedbug genetics presented on Tuesday at the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene meeting in Philadelphia now suggests why.

A team of entomologists led by Coby Schal and Ed Vargo of North Carolina State University studied the genes of bedbugs infesting three multistory apartment buildings in North Carolina and New Jersey and found very low genetic diversity, meaning most of them were very close relatives.

Despite the availability of information, most Americans still have misconceptions about bed bugs, according to the recent Bed Bugs in America survey from the National Pest Management Association (NPMA). Nearly half of the respondents to the NPMA survey incorrectly believed that bed bugs carry disease.

So do bed bugs carry disease? In a word — No. The answer is really that straightforward, for now. Research on the public health effects of bed bugs has been limited over the past several decades. As the bed bug population declined, so did the research about them. With the current resurgence, the scientific community is working to catch up.

Beyond disease transmission, Americans have other fears about the physical health impacts of bed bugs. According to NPMA’s Bed Bugs in America survey, the fear of getting bitten tops the list of the public’s concerns. In reality, bed bug bites are a nuisance, but physical reactions to them vary greatly.
