Much more work dne got the custom butt stock half done, many more parts cut. I just didn't think the gun in the DOOM movie looked "BIG" enough, or ornamented enough. So I took it upon myself, I, Killbucket, to dream up what SHOULD have been in Dwaine Johnson's hands.

More work done on the MG08 for Keeper of NEPA Airsoft. I'm almost done with this badass machine gun. The wood stock is laminated up, I'll be shaping it tomorrow with a rasp and a bench vise. Old-World craftsmanship on this one.

More Making a BFG Super DOOM Gun

Now I'm floating a layer of ABS cement over the exterior, making it all flow into one solid chunk. this will all harden up solid, and stay just as shiny as you see here. Some areas will get worked and wet-sanded, but most will be chem-polished in this way.

Unlike the guns seen in the DOOM movie, mine won't be work-worn and chipped from use. This will be a high-gloss, custom airsoft gun, suitable for display, overkill for skirmish.

Airsoft Home Build: MG08/15 Gewehr

I think to some, just having a CNC in the garage would seem to be all it takes. Looking at a pile of over 50 fresh custom airsoft gun components waiting assembly, I beg to differ. Like building a car model, you can have all the parts ready for you, and still end up with an abomination if you lack skill sets.

And, like a car model kit, I make my parts in handy trees to be cut apart first. Small fixturing tabs are left at intervals along the cuts to hold the parts while the machine is cutting them. The first step is to use the orange nippers here to snip them free, being very careful of the razor-sharp freshly cut plastic edges.

Handy though the small tabs are, any trace of them left behind will impede assembly due to the tight tolerances between parts. Blessed was the day I discovered front-cutting nippers. These odd wire-cutters lop the tabs of perfectly flush in seconds.

Still, multiplied by a few hundred seconds, a blister or two will for if you don't wear gloves or a strategically-placed Band-aid.

I'll get these all cut apart and trimmed, and we'll put the first few parts together.

The Machine gun Maker of Citrus Heights makes an MG08/15 Maschinengewehr 08 for Keeper of NEPA-Airsoft.

This is a clean-sheet design, not an antique re-creation. The resemblance to an MG08 is at a pastiche level because this is a skirmishable airsoft design, not a display item.

Durability and Longevity, and Sustained Offensive Usage are written large in ink on the criteria sheet.

MG08 Airsoft Gun: Firing Group Structure

The heart of any gun, the trigger frame. This is actually only one-third of it; it is designed in three 6mm-thick slices. Again, the material is black industrial-grade ABS sheet from Interstateplastics.com, and is incredibly tough material. If you grab this with pliers, it with bend, rather than break. In other words, since it won't rust, it will out-live us all.

Here's the trigger frame mocked up. The lower-most layer mounts the trigger pivot screw, and the micro switch for the AEG gearbox motor. The skinny L-shaped section at top is for glue-fixturing purposes, and will be trimmed away later.

A similar U-shaped loop is at the front of the assembly, it also will be carefully cut away after the bonds dry.

A simple coil spring will augment the micro switch's button for a bit more feel to the trigger action. There is some clever geometry in this part. A micro switch has a tiny amount of travel and tactile feedback, and the trigger's leverage ratio enhances both.

I made two trigger designs for this project: I have a crazy plan for a personal SWAT version, so a tactical /match type, straight-cut trigger was desired. Here's a peek at that.

Airsoft MG08: Killbucket Build Begins

While I decide if this rough dummy MG08/15 would make a good mailbox,

I'll go ahead and get the parts made for a much better looking example.

More specifically, I'll make the parts myself in my garage, using my ShopBot CNC. After making literally hundreds of airsoft custom guns using normal hand tools, I was able to get this beautiful hunk of machinery. A standard Windows PC drives the robot via USB, and the 3.5HP Porter-Cable Industrial router makes short work of the tough ABS plastic sheet.

MG08/15 Dummy Gun

Before I commit to making the parts for my MG08/15 Airsoft Custom Build, I want to be sure that the proportions I've chosen will work in reality. So I printed out the plans, 100%-size on paper, and

taped them all together. I transferred that to 3/4" particleboard to make

a full-sized bozetto to try out. I wanted to make sure what looked right, actually felt right. I had Keeper measure a rifle he was comfortable using, and we'd aped the dimensions from it.

The full-sized dummy MG08/15 Spandau rifle with my weathered Tokyo Marui Thompson M1A1. Overall length is just over four feet, as was the original.

A perfect fit. Remember, people were generally smaller 100 years ago, and grips weren't the beefy things we have today.

My dinner-plate sized hands only make the MG08's trigger frame look smaller, but it is actually the same size as on my AR's.

MG08 /15 Parts for Airsoft Gun: The Details

Most of the components for my custom airsoft gun will be made from 6mm thick industrial-grade ABS sheet from www.interstateplastics.com. I've designed my gun in 6mm layers and panels, and a few will also be cut from thinner stock. You can see how the batteries for the airsoft gun are housed inside the barrel jacket here. The MG08/15 was water-cooled and had a huge barrel housing to hold water in. I've utilized this space; as many as four RC truck batteries can be fitted.

Since the MG08/15 fed its ammo in from the right hand side, the M249SAW airsoft hopup will require a custom mount and feed block to get 6mm BB's in from the other side. I'll make this part up last so it fits absolutely perfect.

To make the gun's chassis, I will need to machine up these 54 components.

Killbucket's MG08: finalizing Design Details

I have the design details for the gun itself completed, and now I'm ready to move onto making the parts on my ShopBot CNC. At the moment, there are 54 different components to produce from 6mm thick industrial grade ABS sheet.

If you've seen the shows about how to make a Street rod, you'll recognize some methodology here. I'm going to utilize the working parts of a modern airsoft machine gun, and build what appears to be a 100-year-old antique around them.

Rather than attempt to package a working airsoft gun into a faithful antique re-creation, my plan is to make a reliable modern-day skirmishable 6mm weapon, and have its appearance heavily influenced by the venerable German Maschinengewehr 08.
