See my review here. Phase 4 Films is set to give it a home video release on June 1.

Synopsis: “The boredom of small town life is eating Bill Williamson alive. Feeling constrained and claustrophobic in the meaningless drudgery of everyday life and helpless against overwhelming global dissolution, Bill (Brendan Fletcher) begins a descent into madness. His shockingly violent plan will shake the very foundations of society by painting the streets red with blood.”

Here’s a couple of new television spots, via Screen Rant, getting you even more pumped up for the upcoming comic book adapted feature.

Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) is an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan who one day decides to become a super-hero, even though he has no powers, training or meaningful reason to do so. The rest of the cast includes Mark Strong, Nicolas Cage, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Chloe Moretz. Kick-Ass comes out this April 16th under Lionsgate.:

The search may finally be over for an actor to take on the role of Steve Rogers/Captain America in the upcoming Joe Johnston directed film The First Avenger: Captain America as Heat Vision Blog reports that Chris Evans has been asked to fill the slot. This would be one hefty deal if he does choose to accept, mainly because he would be locked in by contract not only to be in this film but be in up to three other Marvel features.

He’s danced around in the Marvel family before in the Fantastic Four movies as the Human Torch. Now the real question is not only whether or not he’ll accept this, but whether or not this is all the truth. That’s right, even though there are reports going around like crazy right now of Chris Evans possibly taking this role, it’s still all up in the air. Marvel or anybody else attached to Evans has yet to confirm or deny these claims, so once again we are thrust right into the sharp edges of the rumor mill once more.

This is where I open it all up to you, do you believe that Chris Evans would be a good choice for Captain America? Or would you rather see someone else be the Captain?

A man’s got to do what a man’s got to do, and it seems destiny ends with Joss Whedon considering the possibility of making the alleged Act IV of the popular internet three-act series of shorts Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog a feature film. That’s at least what star Neil Patrick Harris is saying to MTV when they ask about the status of the sequel to the low-budget creation.

Not only is there just a mere matter of planning it out, whether or not it will actually be a feature film but also there is a matter of scheduling when it comes to the three leads from the first one. Then again, when he goes off about that and who should be available, it makes you wonder about what exactly Whedon’s doing for the sequel.

Check out the quick clip below from MTV with Neil Patrick Harris going off about the sequel. If you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of years and have never watched any part of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, check out the three acts here on Hulu.

The only real thing that any of us know about The Hangover 2 is that it’s set in Thailand and that the lead actors are all coming back to reprise their roles. Well, you can quickly scratch out the first “fact”, cause it’s anything but that. The Hangover and The Hangover 2 director Todd Phillips spoke with Collider and cleared up a couple of things for the rest of us.:

There’s a lot of talk that “The Hangover II” is going to Thailand.

I don’t know. There’s a lot of rumors. There was rumor also that it was going to Mexico or something and neither are true.

When are you starting to film “Hangover II”?

November.

Really?

1st. That’s what we’re trying, but you know a lot of it has to do with Ed Helm’s office schedule and Bradley Cooper’s other movies. Right now our goal is to start shooting November 1st.

There’s still no word as to what exactly the script is going to be about. Like previously stated, stars Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha and Heather Graham are all coming back to reprise their roles in the sequel. The Hangover 2 is currently set for a to-be-announced 2011 release date.

The only way this sudden announcement would have come off as a surprise to anybody is if the last installment bombed, which it did not with an estimated $66 Million domestically, definitely giving them at least a little bit of cash with their $40 Million dollar budget. It goes along with the notion of why stop a good thing, especially when that good thing still consistently gives the studio some more cash in it’s pocket.

At the same time, when you have a title like The Final Destination, you would figure at that point it was drawing towards the end of it’s series, but that’s obviously not true. Then again, one of the things that must have helped with the fourth film’s success was the use of 3D, which is never really a bad thing when it pertains to a horror feature.

She’d fill the role that was claimed by Goldie Hawn in the 1987 version directed by Garry Marshall with had her co-star with Kurt Russell. In it, she plays Joanna Stayton, a snobby rich woman who falls off her yacht one night to be struck with amnesia. When her husband (Edward Herrmann) leaves her stranded in the small Oregon town with no recollection of who she is, Dean (Russell) uses it as an opportunity to push her around as his “wife” to get back at her.

The remake is being penned by Bill Collage and Adam Cooper with original screenwriter Leslie Dixon pitching in as well. Will Smith is producing under Overbrook with the picture tucked neatly underneath Columbia Pictures. No word yet on who will be directing the feature.

So a lot of us who dig comic books and or comic book movies have been keeping our eyes out for quite some time on the latest on Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Not only that, but if you’ve read the comics so far you know that the fifth volume is anything but the last one in the ongoing story. Now Onipress announces the final installment in the series, being released literally days before this year’s 41rst Annual San Diego Comic-Con.

Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour is the title of the final chapters of the comic, finally answering all sorts of questions that were left unanswered in the fifth volume. Granted, this may not seem like the most normal of movie news at the moment, but the release of the last part of the series is something creator Bryan Lee O’Malley had planned. Sure, for those of us who have been anxiously waiting for the Scott Pilgrim movie, it would not be hard to get us excited for it since by that point there’ll be a couple of trailers and images cropping up everywhere for the film. Then again, it is a nice reminder to stay pumped up for the film which comes out on August 13th from Universal Pictures.

Take a look at the cover art below from Onipress.:

The 1987 horror fantasy The Monster Squad is the latest eighties film to fall victim to the ongoing trend of remakes as Paramount Pictures scoops it up for that sole purpose. Rob Cohen, who worked as producer on the original version of the feature, is crossing his fingers hoping he’s the one who gets to sit in the director’s chair for the remake, says Deadline New York. A writer has not been picked yet for this picture being produced by Andrew Form, Brad Fuller and Michael Bay under Platinum Dunes.

The Monster Squad revolves around Dracula’s plans to rule the world, seeking the help of other legendary monsters in order to do so. However, a bunch of kids regarded by their peers as losers uncover the devious plan and prepare for a counter strike. The picture was helmed by Fred Dekker with the script written by himself and Shane Black.

The Curse of the Mr. N.I.C.E. Guy

I laid there still in the darkness praying It didn’t sense I was awake. Struggling for air, I had managed to relief myself from my claustrophobic situation by taking in a very brief deep breath. After the momentary relief had passed, I knew had to muster up the courage to finally free myself from its grasp. Slowly, I shifted myself further and further from its dormant body as I silently pleaded to the Gods to not disturb It from its slumber. As soon as I escaped its tight kung-fu grip, I let out a sigh of relief for my newfound freedom. The moment proved to be fleeting as it wrapped its hairy legs around me and whispered in my ear, “I can spend forever laying here with you.” Although you may think that I was taken hostage by a violent Yeti, it was in fact something far worse and far more terrifying I was dealing with: a needy Mr. Nice Guy. Or as I like to call them, a No Intense Connection Ever Guy.

By the time a single woman is in her mid-to-late twenties, she has probably had a lot of years wasted on her inevitable “bad boy” phase in her life with only bed sheets cloaked in the scent of Acqua di Gio cologne and mass amounts of empty wine bottles from countless nights of discussing with her girlfriends about how much of an as*hole her jerk boyfriend is to show for it. However, there come a time when a woman will crave for some stability in her love life and that is when the “Mr. Nice Guy” will suddenly show up and appear to be the man she has always wished for…or so that’s what it seems.

Onscreen, nice guys are usually every woman’s dream come true. They are humble even though they rock six-pack abs and award-winning smiles, they are physically strong even though they are sensitive and they most likely can do no wrong. This glamorization of the archetypal “Mr. Nice Guy” unfortunately makes women crave for a man like this in real-life and gives men the deluded reassurance that they can somehow relate to these fictional roles like women who constantly relate themselves to the Sex and the City characters.

Yet, just like a seemingly safe prescription drug, women quickly find out the side effects of dating a Mr. Nice Guy may include nauseating texts, verbal diarrhea, infidelity itch, dry genitals, “snorgasms” and heart ache. It’s enough to make a woman yearn for the days when she would take on the impossible task of desperately trying to get her sleazy f*ck buddy into a relationship with her. (Not like I’m speaking from personal experience, of course.)

So why am I ripping on these supposedly sweet men you may be wondering? It all stemmed from one night at a pub with my ultimate “bad boy” ex-boyfriend. (Every woman’s got one.) When the topic of nice guys vs. bad boys came up, he took a hard triple shot of Irish whiskey and turned to me and said, “Serena, nice guys are just as bad for women as bad boys are. They prey on vulnerable women by acting as empathetic shoulders to cry on, guilt-trip them through their passive-aggressive behaviour and they put down other men to make themselves look better. So call me a wolf, at least I’m not wearing sheep’s clothing.” (I’m paraphrasing this of course as there were many drunken hiccups and colourful adjectives I decided to leave out.)

Despite the fact right after that conversation my ex decided to fight a young man pointing a laser pointer at a dart board, I couldn’t deny his moment of clarity about relationships in his drunken stupor. I realized right there that nice guys are not as “nice” as they appear to be in films and on television. Nice guys are not as suave as Boris Kodjoe in Brown Sugar, as caring as Jacob in New Moon and as perfect as John Corbett in well…anything. Rather in most cases, nice guys are jaded from constant rejection, insecure and needy. However, movies unfortunately do not focus on these negative traits for Jason Biggs would still have a blooming film career if they did.

It is important to know that ‘nice’ doesn’t always mean ‘good.’ A man doesn’t have to treat a woman like a princess or a piece of animal excrement to get her attention. All he has to do is have confidence in himself, behave like a challenge and avoid being compared to the character Aidan Shaw at all times in order to avoid from being put into the “Nice” category. If not, he will never stop hearing “You’re a really nice guy, but…” and Alice Cooper’s No More Mr. Nice Guy will become a personal mantra rather than just being an outdated song and nobody should EVER have to endure that.

Maximum Risk came towards the end of Van Damme’s theatrical career in 1996, and still opened at number one at the box office, prior to a stint he had in straight-to-DVD films. Van Damme is back after the successful JCVD, but it is a kick (no pun intended) to re-watch these films that I did so endlessly on a Saturday evening growing up.

Far from his worst, but not the ideal Van Damme film, the flick is still pretty watchable and follows the formula we love about these action films he did during the 1990s. Van Damme stars as Alain Moreau a French cop that comes across a strange case. A man who looks just like him, is found dead. Curious, he finds that it is his brother, separated at birth. Now, he must seek out why his brother died. Yeah, that sounds like formula, but we do like formula, admit it. It’s safe, and we know what we’re going to get, and in the hot summer days in the 90s, that’s what action fans, Van Damme fans, and this once little boy going to Blockbuster to rent his latest, got.

Amidst all of the explosions, the fights, and the beautiful, beautiful, Natasha Henstridge (Species), I couldn’t help but laugh at some of the elements that are also in Eastern Promises. I can bet David Cronenberg didn’t see Maximum Risk, but we get an opening murder that brings us into the film, a story about the mean Russian Mob, and a steam room fight (but Maximum Risk doesn’t have penis shots). Those are elements in Eastern Promises, and while that don’t have any barrings on this film, made 6 or 7 years prior, a film fan can smirk, can’t he?

Maximum Risk is a typical action film. Fights, gun shootings, and some Van Dammage, his fans should be pleased on some level, and 13 years later, it still holds up as a decent vehicle for our beloved Muscles from Brussels. It was a plug-and-play action film that capitalized on the stardom of Van Damme, and the rising star (at the time) of Henstridge, and while action films have evolved, there’s nothing wrong with a little nostalgic roundhouse kicking.

The Blu Ray:

Audio/Video: For a 13 year old film, I was pleasantly surprised on the quality of this Sony Blu Ray. First, the audio is punchy, bass heavy, and while the range isn’t like a modern film, the surrounds are still quite active. They offer the film a new DD TrueHD mix. Next, the picture looks reasonably sharp, clear and highly detailed. It’s not as impressive as modern films, again, but for an average budgeted film, it looks good in HD.

There are no extras on the disc, outside a few Trailers.

Conclusion: A mid-level Van Damme film, but a pretty decent Blu Ray, making Van Damme fans happy with this purchase. Others, rent.

The Film: Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

The Blu Ray: Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Case 39 and Pandorum director Christian Alvart is dipping his feet once more into the science fiction realm as he takes on the reigns directing Captain Future. Captain Future originated in a pulp magazine from Mort Weisinger and Oscar J. Friend in the 1940s, centering a brilliant scientist and adventurer who roams the solar system solving problems, righting wrongs, and vanquishing futuristic supervillains.

Here’s a bit more on what it’s going to be centering on from Dark Horizons.:

The storyline will essentially be an origin story, following Newton’s first adventure. Though Alvart doesn’t specify, it will probably deal with the murder of Newton’s parents at the hands of criminal scientist Victor Kaslan and his subsequent upbringing under the tutelage of scientist Simon Wright, an intelligent robot and a shapeshifting android.

Alvart says a sequel storyline is being developed concurrently so should the film be a success, they can get started on a follow-up right away. He himself has been pursuing the project for several years and now with the necessary development financing having come together, things are ready to move forward with the script.

Warner Bros Pictures has a couple of huge announcements that they were able to spill out to the folks that were able to attend ShoWest today in Las Vegas. The first of them being the plain fact that they are not going to replace the summer tent pole movies that were reserved for the Harry Potter franchise to turn into features from DC Comics starting in 2012, but that there is already works on a comic book adapted feature on The Flash, says Collider.

The second of the two pieces of huge news from Warner Bros is that several movies in their catalog are going to be presented in theaters in glorious 3D, reports /Film. Among those that will be thrown into the land of the third dimension is all of their upcoming comic book adapted features from DC Comics and tent pole movies.

What’s your thoughts on the sudden decision of 3D on these films and the sudden announcement of The Flash? Do you think that Warner Bros is finally stepping up their game and are ready to take over this decade with DC Comics features in the same way Marvel did on the big screen this past decade?
