Kiltmakers.co.uk has done it again! They have succeeded in bringing you some of the finest and highest quality Celtic Jewellery available. Not familiar with the origin and meanings of the Celtic symbols? Then keep reading.

Celtic Knots are one of the most enduring symbols in history, though their exact meaning is somewhat elusive. Written records are sparse and the records of Celtic invaders and persecutors may be slightly biased. Various Celtic Knot designs started appearing around 450 AD and it is believed that they symbolize eternity or endlessness. When you look at a Celtic Knot there is no beginning, nor an end. Their weavings are at times beautifully complex or just simply beautiful. Sometimes known as the ‘mystic knot’ or the ‘endless knot’, they are most often given to a loved-one as a symbol of everlasting love or as a talisman for a charmed life.

The symbolism of the Celtic Cross is much harder to explain. The ancient Druids first derived this design as a symbol of the knowledge achieved through living life and as a reminder of how their faith guided them to knowing the mysteries of life through the 4 methods to ascension: self-awareness, wisdom, nature and spiritual awareness. The cross was, and still is, a symbol of that journey. Circles around the Cross arose out of a desire to symbolize the ‘whole’ or the inclusion of unification and totality. Give this as a gift of understanding and love to those you care deeply for.

Amethysts and Heathergems are the most prevalent gems incorporated into the Kiltmakers jewellery line. Amethysts have long been used in ancient times for medicinal purposes and as a symbol of divinity; more recently in history they are esteemed as the gem defining friendship. Amethysts combined with a Celtic Knot would be the perfect symbol and gift of an enduring friendship or love. Heathergems, on the other hand, are man-made; the process involved in making them is amazing and due to the nature of their manufacture, no two stones will be exactly the same. Briefly, here is the process: Scottish Heather is collected, cut, shot-blasted to remove the bark, cleaned and then dyed using all natural dyes. The heather used is too old to provide nutrition for wildlife and is pulled in a manner which promotes the growth of new heather. Then, different combinations of coloured stems are put into a machine that compresses the heather into blocks under an amazing eighty tons of pressure, similar to how minerals are compressed by the earth to create many precious and semi-precious gemstones. The result is a multi-coloured stone block that is then cut into sections, which are then wrought into shapes using a lathe and a Gravograph computer-controlled machine. Mind you, this process is accomplished mostly by hand by highly skilled artisans. Finally, the cut shapes are sanded, polished and hand-lacquered with 5 coats before being set into the stunning silver and pewter jewellery pieces presented here.

Now for a true story: Our first priority after receiving any new products is to photograph them for the website. This meant we had to carry the new Ness range through our Aberdeen store. On three separate occasions we were stopped as our customers admired the gorgeous new handbags, which were immediately purchased. The new range from Ness is arriving very soon, with a vibrant pallet of colour, which will cheer you up and bring excitement and a fresh look to your wardrobe.

We have previewed the exciting new range at a recent trade show, and cant wait to get the photo’s online.

This season we are extending our range to include fashionable knitwear, with v-neck and cardigan styles in quality cotton cashmere. For the long hot summer days Ness have introduced camisoles and vest style tops in both plain print and floral design.

With the success of last seasons shoe range, there are some impressive new styles which will include wedges, heels with peep toes and ballet pumps.

A Tartan First for Stonehaven School

Mill o’ Forest school pupils have come up with a unique way of marking the Year of Homecoming as Scotland celebrates the 250th birthday of the national bard.

Primary 3 and 5 pupils at the school have been busy designing their own tartan with the support of Alex Scott & Co. (kiltmakers) Ltd. of Aberdeen.

The Children have selected the colours to be used and samples have now been made up and returned to the school. Pupils have narrowed the seven available options to just three and the choice will now go to a school vote.

Primary 3 teacher Marjory Hamilton said she believed they were the first school in the area bidding to create their own registered tartan.

“It is going to cost around £1000 to put into production so we are now in the process of organising a concert to raise money. We have also held a photography competition and the funds from that will go towards the project. We hope that when we have the final design it can be used to make scarves and other items. We’re really excited and it would be nice if eventually it could be used for ties and integrated into the school uniform in some way in the future. It will be a proper registered tartan unique to Mill o’ Forest.”

On Friday pupils at the school dressed up to mark Burns’ birthday. Anyone wanting to support the initiative can contact the school on 01569 763561.

He’s a well known character here in Aberdeen and at just 89 years young has an enthusiastic knowledge of Aberdeen and its past. He is a great poet and his poetry reflects his humour and dedication to the city.

My Twelve Days of Christmas

On the first day of Christmas my true love said to me,

I’m glad we bought fresh turkey and a proper Christmas tree.

On the second day of Christmas much laughter could be heard,

We tucked into our turkey, a most delicious bird.

On the third day we entertained people from next door,

The turkey tasted as good as it had the day before.

Day four relations came to stay, Gran is looking old,

We finished up the Christmas pud and ate the turkey cold.

On the fifth day of Christmas, outside the snowflakes flurried,

But we were nice and warm inside, for we had turkey curried.

On the sixth day, I must admit the Christmas spirit died,

The children fought and bickered, we ate turkey rissoles fried.

On the seventh day of Christmas my true love she did wince,

When she sat down at the table and was offered turkey mince…

Day eight, and nerves were getting frayed, the dog had run for shelter.

I served up Turkey pancakes, with a glass of Alka Seltzer.

On the ninth day our cat left home, by lunchtime Dad was blotto,

He said he had to have a drink to face Turkey risotto.

By the tenth day the booze had gone, except our home made brew,

And if that wasn’t bad enough we suffered turkey stew.

On the eleventh day of Christmas the Christmas tree was moulting,

The mince pies were as hard as a rock and the turkey was revolting.

On the twelfth day, my true love had a smile upon her lip,

The guests had gone, the turkey too, we dined on fish and chips.

The 30th of November is the Feast Of Saint Andrew - The Patron Saint of Scotland. To celebrate we’ll be hosting a fantastic evening of food and drink, packed with entertainment. My Tartan Day

As webmaster here at kiltmakers.co.uk you can guess that Tartan Day is quite a big deal! Here’s my Diary from the day:

An air of excitement filled my house on the morning of Saturday 2^nd August; it was Aberdeen’s 5^th annual Tartan Day. This day is close to my heart as thousands of people celebrate our Scottish heritage, culture, language and the way tartan keeps our traditions alive.

As I left my house to catch the bus to our shop in Schoolhill I was stopped by a young man who asked if he could take my photograph as he was intrigued by my kilt, funny to think I will now be in his photo album, this made me feel very proud of my heritage!

Looking around me on my way to the shop I could see the streets busy and adorned with tartan and on approaching the stall that we had set up outside the shop I was thrilled to see it was buzzing with activity. As I got closer I realised why our stall was so busy, we had teamed up with the local distillery Glen Garioch to offer people a taste of the local whisky, it’s smooth taste proved to be a very popular choice!

At 11 O.clock the Junior Buchan Pipe Band warmed up their pipes, the drummers their sticks and we were treated to an impressive music delight. The band drew the crowd in to enjoy the performance, although they didn’t seem to stray too far away from the whisky! Jill McHaffie who is in charge of the band told me that the youngest member is eleven years old and the Pipe Major who leads the band as they play was the oldest at nineteen. They have competed in competitions and next year they will be in contention for the top honours.

At midday a mass tartan march began along Union Street by the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, made up of 10 pipe bands and comprising 120 pipers. Following on from the pipe bands was the pageant parade which included performers from the Aberdeen International Youth Festival costumed historic characters, dignitaries and some local celebrities, I later learned that the characters were a battle re-enactment group and they were to perform later in the afternoon.

After lunch I went along to Union Terrace Gardens where Stephen Robertson officially opened the afternoon’s proceedings. He was part of the famous comedy group from Aberdeen called “Scotland The What” along with George Donald and Buff Hardie. In more recent times, he has been awarded with the freedom of the city and been made Rector of Aberdeen University. Suffice to say, he gave a very funny speech to open proceedings. This was followed by a Scottish tribal drumming band called Albannach that features a piper, accompanied by energetic drumming.

I finally headed back to our shop to discover the Junior Buchan Pipe Band was still playing at 3:30, still managing to draw in a crowd. Unfortunately this was the end of my tartan day, but what a wonderful day and a wonderful event, I can’t wait until next year!

Wearing a Tartan Sash

Wearing a ladies Tartan Sash.

The manner of wearing tartan sashes has had customary significance for the last two centuries.
The wearing of a sash in any particular manner has so far no legal significance, hence the sash is worn as respect for tradition and is consistent with custom. The different methods mentioned below are appropriate for ladies in different circumstances.

The different ways to wear a sash is based upon a careful study of old portraits, prints and traditional practice carried out by the Lord Lyon King of Arms and thus bears the authoritative approval.


1. The sash is worn over the right shoulder, across the breast and secured by a brooch on the left hip. A more modern way of wearing a sash, that can be worn by any woman, usually with an evening dress.	2. Style worn by Clan Women: The sash is worn over the right shoulder across the breast and is secured by a pin or small brooch on the right shoulder.

3. Style worn by Wives of Clan Chiefs and by Wives of Colonels of Scottish Regiments: The sash which may be fuller in size is worn over the left shoulder and secured with a broach on the left shoulder.	4. Style worn by country dancers or where any lady desires to keep the front of the dress clear of the sash. Perhaps to wear a sash of some chivalric order or any orders and decorations. The style is similar to the belted plaid and is really a small arisaid. It is buttoned on at the back of the waist, or is held by a small belt, and is secured at the right shoulder by a pin or small brooch, so that the ends fall backwards from the right shoulder and swing at the back of the right.

Due to a new ruling by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, permission has been granted by her majesty for Members of the Scottish Country Dance Society to allow them to wear sashes on the left shoulder. This is an honour bestowed upon the Society because she is Patron.

30 Kilts makes for a Fine Wedding

Wedding season is in full swing here in Scotland - and our Kilt Department is enjoying another record breaking year. Gavin (our department manager) recently helped Liz Sunnuck organise the hire of 30 full kilt outfits. This was a fantastic achievement as the majority of the hires were arranged completely over the phone & email as many of the guests were located overseas.

Liz kindly let us share her comments: :

“My daughter was married at Drumtocaty Castle last weekend. As we had
worldwide visitors we ordered more than 30 kilt hire outfits from Alex Scott (kiltmakers).

Most of the orders were made by e-mail, or telephone and I wanted to
write to you to express our sincere thanks to Gavin and his team.
Gavin was terrific - so well organised, so helpful, so professional -
and he helped this side of the wedding go so smoothly. Perfect fits all round!

NUMPTY

(num-p-tee) Dialect, chiefly Scot ~n. 1. a bumbling fool; one who is intellectually challenged (“no’ the fu’shillin’”) 2. Widely known in Scotland as an MSP (Member of Scottish Parliament) [as in “These numpties couldnae organise a piss up in a brewery.”]

BLETHER

(ble-thir) Dialect, chiefly Scot. ~n. 1. person who catters incessantly; one who babbles on and on (” That wee yin o’ yours is an awfy blether getting’”). ~v. 2. to engage in conversation, long-winded or idle talk ( as in ” Ah met yer granny doon the toun, we hud a richt guid blether the gither”) [ see also sweetie-wife ]

CRABBIT

(cra-bit) Dialect, chiefly Scot. ~adj. 1. ill-tempered, grumpy, curt, disagreeable; in a bad mood [esp. in the morning]. ( often used in ” ken this, yer a crabbit get, so you are”) ~n. by their nature or temperament conveys an aura of irritability.

EEJIT

(ee-jit) Dialect, chiefly Scot. ~n. 1. idiot, simpleton, one not possessed of all their mental faculties; one who is unable to properly conduct their own affairs ( as in ” Yer aff yer heid, ya eejit. That’s no’ a real dug” ). [ See also bawheid, dunderhead]

FOUTER

(foo-tir) Dialect, chiefly Scot, ~n. 1.one who muddles through; aimless, exasperating person (“Yer a fouter, gie it tae me, ah’ll dae it”). 2. a fiddly or troublesome job (” This is a right fouter, this”). ~adv. foutering ( “Yer foutering aboot. Stope it!”) [Similar to gitter]

GLAIKIT

(’glai-kit) Dialect, chiefly Scot. ~adj. 1. (intr.) stupid: senseless, silly. ( often in“he stood there wi’ a glaikit look oan his fizzog”) 2. (tr.) giddy, thoughtless. 3. affected 4. petty.

SKIVER

(sky-ver) Dialect, chiefly Scot. ~ n. 1. one who avoids tasks or work in general; a shirker. [also sloper]. ~ v. skive (”Ah cannae be arsed wi’ this - ah’m away fur a skive”) 2. splinter of wood embedded in the skin (also skelf)

BESOM

(biz-um) bisom Dialect, chiefly Scot. ~n. 1. obstreperous girl or woman; female upstart [as in "Dinnae pou' yer brither's hair, ya wee besom"]. 2. woman of low moral standing; a hussy ( “Thon yin’s a right mucky besom”). 3. broomstick or scourge; any broom made from loose twigs. 4. a comet or its tail.

CANNY

(can-y) Dialect, chiefly Scot. ~adj. 1. cautious, careful, hesitant; unwilling to rush into things. 2. frugal, prudent (esp. with money) [a canny scot- one who has an aversion to separating money from his pocket] ( as in ” He’s that canny he aye pays for his round wi’ empty lemonade bottles”).

GALLUS

(ga-luss) Dialect, chiefly Scot. ~adj. 1, self-confident, daring; cheeky. 2. stylish, impressive (” See him, he’s pure gallus, by the way”) 3. Orig. derogatory, meaning wild; a rascal; deserving to be hanged ( from the gallows).

SCUNNER

(’scun-ner) Dialect, chiefly Scot. ~vb. 1.(intr.) to feel aversion. 2. (tr.) to produce a feeling of aversion in. ~n 3. a strong feeling of aversion ( often in take a scunner, or ” git oot o’ ma face ya wee scunner” ) 4. an object of dislike; nuisance, [c] 4: from Scot. skunner, from ?]

STEAMIN’

(stee-min) Slang, chiefly Scot. ~adj. drunk, inebriated, the state of having consumed too much bevy. ( see also “guttered,fu’, pissed, gassed, blootered, stoned, miraculous, legless, smashed, minced, wrecked, mingin’, welly’d, mortal, arsed, blitzed, blazin’, hingin’, buckled)

FITBA’

(fit-baw) Dialect, chiefly Scot. ~n. 1. (m) the beautiful game 2. (f) stupid game involving 22 grown men (and 3 officials of dubious parentage and eyesight) kicking a lump of leather around a field, often sparking irrational behaviour, bad language and blind devotion to a team or player, to the detriment of normal marital relations. ( see fitba’ widow)

SASSENACH

(sass-y-nak) sic. Dialect, chiefly Scot. ~n. 1. an Englishman or -woman 2. used by highlanders to describe non-Gaelic-speaking Lowlander [from the Gaelic sasunnach, meaning Saxon ] 3. someone who actually understands the rules of cricket and mentions 1966 every bloody chance they get (see Jimmy Hill).

TEUCHTER

(choo-chter) Dialect, chiefly Scot. ~n. 1. (trad.) one who derives from the Highlands of Scotland ( a Hielander); more commonly used by city folk to describe rural dwellers. 2. Gaelic-speaker (mostly to each other) esp. at strange gatherings known as Mods. [definitely not Rockers]. Occassionally partakes of a wee dram. ( also heuchter teuchter).

BRAW

(br-aww) Dialect, chiefly Scot. ~adj. 1. fine, pleasant esp. weather. (”It’s a braw day the day” or “It’s a braw, bricht, moonlicht night the nicht.”) 2. attractive, pretty, often in “You’re really braw, hen. Fancy a Ruby Murray?”

GALOOT

(gah-loot) Dialect, chiefly Scot. ~n. 1. (trad.) bumbling fool; slow witted person (as in “Och that’s no a tour guide. It’s a naked rambler, ya daft goloot!”). 2. awkward, clumsy or gangly.

WABBIT

(wah-bit) Dialect, chiefly Scot. ~adj. 1. exhausted, out of breath; unable to function due to extreme tiredness (as in “Playin’ wi’ thae weans has gote me wabbit”) [similar to puggled]

A visit from Whiskyföreningen vid TF

Last week Alex Scott (the physical store of kiltmakers.co.uk) were delighted to welcome some visitors from Helsinki. Whiskyföreningen vid TF is a whisky appreciation society with a current membership of about seventy. The members are mostly students at Helsinki Technical University but also include some post-graduate members.

The main activities of the society are to organise whisky tastings and excursions. They are also keen to introduce their members to Scotland as they feel it is important to see the home of whisky!

We were lucky to meet some of their members and show them another aspect of Scotland, the Highland outfit. We were able to let them see kilts, and in some cases try on kilts. They also met Margot who is our kilt maker.

We enjoyed meeting the society members and we wish them all the best with the expansion of their society.

The Quaich - A Symbol Of Friendship

The quaich is a marvellous symbolic gift that is given to those to whom we wish to show our love, friendship, admiration or respect. It is also a distinctively Scottish gift that is appreciated by all around the world.

The word “quaich” comes from the Gaelic word “cuach”; meaning cup. They are shallow bowls with two short handles at opposite sides. They were traditionally made of wood but other materials were used depending on availability. Other materials used were stone, horn, and as metals became more commonly used, brass, pewter and silver. In some instances the quaich was made from a combination of materials. A common marriage was carved wood inlaid with pewter or silver.

The quaich originated in the Highlands but did not become popular throughout Scotland until 1745, when the quaich travelled from the North of Scotland with the armies of Bonnie Prince Charlie. This took the quaich as far south as Edinburgh and Derby. These quaichs were said to have glass bottoms so the person sipping a dram could keep an eye on those around them. A more romantic quaich had a double glass bottom in which was kept a lock of hair so that the owner could drink from his quaich to his lady love. In 1589, King James VI of Scotland gave Anne of Denmark a quaich or “loving cup” as a wedding gift.

Although some quaichs had glass bottoms for the suspicious among us, the quaich has overwhelmingly been seen as a cup of friendship. The quaich was used for a visitors welcome or farewell dram by Clan chiefs and wealthy merchants, and the humble crofter. Today many people offer welcome toasts using the quaich but most give them as a gift to those they hold dear. They are displayed in homes all over the world and reminds everyone of friendship.

A Very Happy Birthday Mr Burns.

Jan 25th sees Scottish folk toast the life of Robert Burns, born 1759 in Alloway, just 150 miles South of us here in Aberdeen.

The annual celebration of his life, poems and songs will be celebrated across Scotland tonight and over the coming weekend. Our cold winter evenings will be warmed with formal Burns suppers, where the great Bard’s life will be celebrated and his poetry read out loud.

To enjoy your own Burns Supper - all you need is a place to gather, plenty of haggis, neeps and tatties, a bunch of friends, a master of ceremonies, and good Scotch drink to ward off the bitter northern winds. These ingredients will ensure a good giggle as you try to do justice to great words and spirit of Robbie Burns.

Ideally, everyone should bring along some of Rab’s poetry to read out or maybe a song to sing (there’s plenty on the Internet.) In this way everyone gets involved and can take turns in being the object of amusement to all gathered. It’s not hard to see why this tradition has been continued for so long - Burns Suppers are always fun - often eye-watering funny.

For the majority of us, Burns is best known and most often sung song, reminding us that Burns is a poet of friendship. Auld Lang Syne is now generally sung at the end of a convivial evening and at New Year the world over.

The good news from Royal Mail is that it seems further strike action is now very unlikely.

Were told that both Royal Mail (and our courier company Parcelforce) are now operating normally.

“We maintain ‘Next Day’ service despite postal strikes” - Updated

The UK is again hit with large scale industrial action within the Royal Mail network. This latest strike began at midday and will run for 48 hours. There is a second strike planned for Monday the 8th of October.

While our normal free UK delivery may be slowed, we will use other means to ensure that our ‘Next Day’ service is unaffected. This will be done at no extra cost to the customer.
