TOMMY McFLY FROM MIX 107.3 AND I WILL TAKE 50 VOLUNTEERS WITH US TO THE CAPITAL AREA FOOD BANK IN NORTHEAST DC. ACTUALLY, *YOU* ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING YOURSELF THERE. (THE CLOSEST METRO IS BROOKLAND-CUA ON THE RED LINE.) THE EVENT STARTS AT 9AM AND USUALLY LASTS A FEW HOURS. 2009 Head of the Charles 11 Days Away! We are Bow #5!!

The Head of the Charles is a 3 mile "head race" that takes place on the Charles River that divides Boston from Cambridge MA. If you're not sure what crew is, a quick description is that the rowers race in those really long, skinny boats with lots of oars sticking out from each side. When done well, they look like graceful waterbugs gliding along the surface. I rowed crew for Cornell University and after I graduated, I thought I might try out for the Olympic team... ummmmm yeah. (Long story short, I trained for about a year after I graduated, down on the Tennessee River in Chattanooga with the US Rowing team. It was great, but let's just say I was better at TV weather! That's my buddy, Dave Price, a fellow Cornell grad.)

The next best thing, I discovered, was competing with my fellow Cornell alumni rowers every year in various head races. (That's us in the middle to the left with thw white blades with red scallops on the end.)

Lately, we have been convening for the Head of the Charles in Boston (this is the largest of its kind, in the world.) I am always amazed at how well we do considering our boat of rowers are scattered all across the country. Almost all of us do not row, at all, during the year. Instead we rely on other types of training - running, erging, swimming, whatever it takes. We meet in Boston the Friday before the race, practice once on the water and then that is it. Our next time rowing together is literally race day. Here is a video clip of last year's pre-race practice:

That's Tory talking to Chris in the front of the boat. She is our "stroke" and part of the stern pair (who are sitting out in this video.) I am a starboard rower (the oars sticking out on the right hand side of the video).

So, if you have been following me on Twitter (my id is "weatherkim") or Facebook, then you know about my training routine recently. (This also includes avoiding the dead deer decaying along a running path in Fairfax county!) I have been updating my training status on those social networking sites. I plan to do so, also, from Boston next weekend (this weekend I have to get through a high school reunion!)

The latest to come down from Boston is that Bow numbers have been issued. We are pretty low - #5! YIKES!

Head races are interesting in that each boat starts staggered by about 10 seconds. But even though you are racing the clock down the twisty Charles River, you can still pass boats ahead of you. If you do that you are either really fast, or, that boat is
really slow! (Just try not to clash blades with the boat you're passing! - Look below) We did well last year (we had bow #16, but came in 6th) and that is why we drew the low bow number. So, the pressure will be on us... there will be a lot of boats trying to catch us as we head upstream.

Luckily our crew is blessed with the best and I mean *best* coxswain out there. Chris Bassler used to coach the Cornell lightweights, years ago when I rowed there. He's wearing the yellow shirt and #16 in the two pics towards the top.

For the past 10 years or so that I have been involved with our alumni rowing team, our women's club 8 has
been sooooooo lucky to have him steer our boat in this race. In many ways, it *is* a coxswain's race. The river is unbelievably twisty. Many seconds can be lost or gained by how the course is steered. There are judges along the course who can dock seconds from your boat based on how your coxswain adheres to the rules of the race (did they yield to oncoming faster teams to let them pass? Did they cut a buoy?) Oh yeah, did I mention the BRIDGES? The Head of the Charles starts at the Boston University Boat House and right from the get-go there is an angled combination of 2 bridges: a railroad tressle (see "Free Money" to the right) and the BU Bridge. After that, there are F I V E more bridges, each with triple arches. The penalty for going through the wrong arch, say, closer to the Boston side of the river? S I X T Y S E C O N D S!

The HOC has really changed over the years. One great new feature is that they have a live webcast. So, if you are curious about the event, or, just want to see your favorite weather girl look painfully winded from a birds eye view, you can

on race day. We are event #18, the Women's Club 8. The BMA Boat Club would love your support! For my Boston friends, pick a bridge (I recommend the Weeks Foot Bridge at left) and chant "Cornell Cornell BMA" when we pass underneath! I spotted some local teams also racing next Saturday: Anacostia Community Boathouse (Bow #19) & Alexandria Crew Boosters Club Inc. (Bow #17). More to come...

The peak of hurricane season has come and gone. The month of September sees an average of 3 storms a year. It's been awfully quiet, but it is good to know we meteorologists have one more powerful tool in our arsenal to help us predict the weather. On June 27th, a new GOES (Geostationary Orbiting Earth Satellite) satellite was launched as a joint effort between NASA and NOAA. Originally launched in 1975, the GOES satellites have been keeping an eye on us from about 22 thousand miles for a while!

My favorite tidbit gleamed from this interview with Mr. Renkevens? This new satellite no longer has to be turned off for a few hours at night. Have a look and a listen above.

**UPDATE**!!
Mr. Renkevens emailed me the following to answer some of your comments (and correct a mistake I had originally in this blog - thanks Tom!) Here is what he wrote:

"As to "turning them off at night" the current operational satellites have smaller on board batteries, thus are "off" for a period of time (up to about two and a half hours, but other satellite covers much of the area of missing data) surrounding local satellite midnight for a few weeks before and after vernal and autumnal equinox. This is known as the "eclipse" period, and encompasses a total of about 5 months a year

(2.5 months in fall and in spring each). Rest of year, they operate

And in response to one viewer comment of "when the stop working"

Actually, once they no longer meet our requirements, run out of station keeping fuel (they never completely "stop working") they are put into a super synchronous orbit (higher then geo orbit) to get out of the way and make room for other satellites, and there they do not fall back down to earth."

A RAIN-FREE Fortnight & PICK MY Christian Louboutin Shoes!

It has now been TWO WEEKS since we have had any measurable rain at Reagan National Airport. The last time we saw rain, it was a healthy dose on August 22nd (1.23") Who knew it would have to last so long! This got me thinking about our precipitation for 2009 and, as it turns out, we aren't too far off where we normally are for this late in the year.

2009 precipitation total so far 26.66" / Normal value by September 5th 26.86". I also checked out the Palmer Drought Index and our area is neither favorably moist or dry. Only parts of North Carolina and upstate South Carolina are expreiencing drought conditions at this time.

When we forecast the weather, we look at different computer models to

help guide us in our wether prognostications. One of them is called the "NAM" which stands for North American Mesoscale Model. Here is a look at the next shot, according to this one particular computer model, of when we should expect rain.
