My Thoughts:

I was first introduced to Ellie Dean's Beach View Boarding House Series this past summer when I was presented with an advance reader's copy of Book #9, Sealed With A Loving Kiss, and I was immediately captivated by the endearing cast of characters as well as Dean's emotionally compelling writing style. Although it read well as a stand alone novel, I immediately knew I had to go back a begin with the first book in this series and I was not disappointed in the least! This first installment is set against the early days of World War II and the children of London are being evacuated to the countryside. As a mother, I can't even begin to imagine what this must have been like, however, for Sally and Ernie, their mother doesn't seem to be particularly bothered at all and fails to even see her children off. At sixteen years old, Sally has had to grow up quickly and has become her brother's primary care provider while their father serves his country. Fortunately, Peggy Reilly has enough love in heart and a room to spare, and quickly embraces these young Londoners. Filled with love, hope, and the endearing bonds of friendship amid the onset of war, "There'll Be Blue Skies" is a compelling story that has left me anxious to continue on to the next book in this series! Keep the box of tissue close at hand; this one is sure to tug at your heart! FIVE stars.

My Thoughts:

Fans of the PBS series, "Home Fires: and "Mr.Selfridge", are sure to be delighted with this first installment of Annie Groves' "Article Row" series! As Britain begins to prepare for the inevitable invasion of German forces, Olive and her daughter, Tilly, find themselves taking in boarders in order to make ends meet. With the addition of Sally, Dulcie, and Agnes, number 13 Article Row quickly becomes more than a boarding house as Olive proves there is love in her heart for just one daughter. As each young woman struggles with her own personal issues, they are quickly bonded by the threats of war. Annie Groves is an amazing storyteller and manages to capture the reader with extremely well-developed characters. I was immediately captivated by this cast of characters who soon felt more like old friends. The insight into the preparations for war and everyone doing their bit to assist in the efforts makes for an intriguing and emotional journey into the past. Keep in mind this is just the first novel in the series, so don't expect the story to come full circle by novel's end...after all it's really just the beginning and what a beginning it is! I can't wait to read the next installment, "Home For Christmas". A wonderful beginning to what is sure to be a wonderful series! FIVE stars.

My Thoughts:

In Maureen Lee's novel, Martha's Journey, the character, Martha Rossi, and her unwavering devotion and determination will remain within your heart long after the last page has been read! Burdened with the responsibility of being the sole wage earner in the midst of poverty and caring for her children, Martha Rossi's life is anything but easy. However, she wouldn't change any aspect of her life if she could just have her son, Joe, home safe and sound. Martha proves there is no greater strength than a mother's love for her children. Although his intentions were admirable, Joe quickly finds himself face to face with the ugliness of war that no one should ever have to bear witness to, especially not a fourteen year old boy from Liverpool. Filled with tragedy, triumph, and a cast of characters that will quickly find a way into your heart, Martha's Journey, is sure to appeal to any reader. I was quickly pulled into this book and found it difficult to put it aside...and of course, a box of tissue was close at hand! Maureen Lee is a truly gifted storyteller and one that I look forward to reading more from in the very near future. FIVE stars.

It's seems like ages since I've posted here! As I mentioned previously, my son's change in medications has not gone well. I've spent more time at school this year for behavior issues than I care to admit. But, I've started the paperwork to get him an appointment at the Cleveland Clinic's Center for Autism after the first of the year. I think a re-evaluation is in order. And, any spare time that I happen to find has been spent launching my cross stitch design business, Sugar Stitches, which is going quite well albeit slow.

I haven't had a chance to do much reading to say the least. However, I have added a few titles to my bookshelf. As an avid fan of the PBS series, "Home Fires", I purchased the following titles in paperback. I've started "Martha's Journey" this weekend and so far I'm not disappointed in the least...

“What are you doing?”

The voice was authoritative, rich, and deep. And hauntingly familiar.

She turned, hiding the letter behind her. She made a clumsy attempt to shove the drawer shut with her bottom but only succeeded in bumping the desk, which rocked on spindly legs. The man must be a servant. If she could manage a haughty tone, she could probably talk her way out of the situation. But she’d never been particularly good at haughty. Her face burned.

“I was looking for something.” She looked at the man, hoping he wasn’t half as intimidating as he sounded, and froze.

Dear God. It couldn’t be.

“Rose?” He blinked, clearly as stunned as she, then quickly corrected himself. “Lady Rose?”

“Charles.” The sound of his name on her lips was surreal. She’d thought that her feelings for him had withered, dried, and blown away like dead leaves.

She’d been wrong.

He was the same as she remembered—confident, solid, and steady. But he was different too. His hair had turned a darker shade of gold, and he seemed to have grown all over. His neck was thicker, his jaw stronger. He’d traded the patched trousers and threadbare shirt that he’d worn in the stables for buckskin breeches and a nicely tailored jacket, both of which showed his strong physique to advantage. “You’re a companion?” He raised a brow, skeptical.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Once, she would have willingly explained everything to him. For even before she’d regained her voice, she’d shared her whole being with him—she’d been as honest and open as it was possible for her to be. But now, his question irritated her. It presumed too much—a connection, a trust, a bond.

“I don’t see where it’s any concern of yours.”

“Forgive me.” But the look he leveled at her belied his apology. It said, Fine. We can play it that way if you’d like.

Fighting the urge to shiver, she folded the letter behind her back. She felt for the drawer, slipped the note through the crack, and slid the drawer shut. “You’re no longer a stable master.” It was an idiotic thing to say, but she had to say something—anything—to fill the vast and unnatural gulf between them.

“No.” His stiff smile didn’t reach his eyes.

“And I think it’s safe to presume,” she stated saucily, “that you’re not Lady Yardley’s companion.”

“I am not.” This time, his smile was genuine.

Dangerous, that. She gripped the edge of the desk behind her to keep her knees from wobbling.

He took one step toward her. “I’m her steward.”

Ah, he’d been too busy moving up in the world to reply to her letters. She couldn’t blame him for wanting to better his station in life—that had always been his dream. Perhaps he wanted no reminders of the days he’d spent mucking out stables. But those days happened to be the ones she most treasured.

“Congratulations are in order then.”

“I’m grateful to Lady Yardley for giving me the opportunity.” He took another step toward Rose. “And I am in her debt.”

The show of loyalty to his employer stung—especially since he seemed to have forgotten the sultry summer days and the confidences they’d shared. “I’ve no doubt you’ve proven yourself worthy.”

He strode closer, till only an arm’s length separated them. His clothes might have been more refined, but the man beneath them was not. My Thoughts:

In this fourth installment of the Honeycote series, Anne Barton once again proves herself to be a very gifted and talented storyteller of the Historical Romance genre! The only story better than forbidden love is a love story that crosses social standing and class which makes this a quite unique novel. Lady Rose is the sister of a Duke with expectations to marry within the upper echelons of the ton. But, her heart abides by no such rules; Lady Rose is in love with Charles, the handsome, hard-working stable master. Will their love prevail the prejudices of society? Or will they be forced apart? With well-developed characters and unexpected twists and turns throughout, I found it quite difficult to pry myself from between the pages! Fans of Historical Romance are sure to be delighted! FOUR stars.

In this second installment in her White Cliff Bay series, Holly Martin once again serves up a wonderful romance sprinkled with several laugh aloud moments and a generous offering of holiday magic! I absolutely loved returning to the quaint village of White Cliff Bay and meeting up once again with its many endearing characters. It's quite apparent to everyone in White Cliff Bay that Libby and George were meant for each other....well, everyone but George and Libby. The best of friends, Libby and George are completely at ease with each other and accepting of each others' quirks and differences with all the makings for a long-term relationship. As Libby agrees to help George work his way back into the dating scene after the heartbreak of a failed marriage, Libby quickly finds herself falling in love with her best friend. But are these dates with George merely "practice runs" or are they truly falling in love with each other? Holly Martin's wit and humor makes this a thoroughly enjoyable read that had me laughing to the point of tears on several occasions. I enjoyed the style of continuity in which Martin interwove characters and events found in Christmas At Lilac Cottage. She effectively takes the reader back to the same period in time with a new romantic focus. Very well developed and extremely enjoyable! FOUR stars.

"The Bargain" By Jane Ashford is an intriguing, suspense-filled historical romance filled with unexpected twists and turns throughout which made it difficult for me to pry myself from between the pages! I absolutely loved these characters. Ariel Harding is a very determined and persistent heroine with a strong sense of independence and a need to uncover the truth behind her mother's death. Lord Alan Gresham is a man of science and reason but certainly has no clue about romance and emotions of the heart. However, his overall impression of women is quickly diminished when he encounters Ariel Harding. Will he ever come to terms with his new found emotions? Jane Ashford is a very talented storyteller with a special gift of creating a romance that has just enough "spice" that doesn't overpower the story itself. Fans of Historical Romance are sure to be delighted! "The Bargain" is a prequel to Ashford's new Regency Romance "The Duke's Sons" series with the first installment "Heir To The Duke" scheduled for release on January 5th, 2016 and is certainly on my list of books to be read. FOUR stars.

My Thoughts:

First in The Dressmakers Series By Loretta Chase, Silk Is For Seduction is a breath-taking historical romance filled with endearing characters, unexpected twists and turns, and heated passion that is sure to warm any reader's heart. My overall favorite aspect of this novel is our heroine, Marcelline Noirot. She's fiercely independent with brazen self-assurance and has a talent for dressmaking like no other with ambition to match. Her character is extremely well-developed and will quickly become a reader's favorite. But will her amibition and determination be enough as Marcelline sets out to win the patronage of the future Duchess? Although Marcelline can be charming and conniving in the most elegant ways, the Duke of Clevedon proves to be quite a match of wits and charm. The journey to a happy ending is never an easy one and Marcelline's is no exception. She is faced with challenges and set backs that would leave most feeling utterly hopeless and unwilling to move forward but she continues forth with heightened determination not only for her own success but for that of her family as well. But, will Marcelline have to push her own needs and desires aside in order to achieve that success? Loretta Chase has created a wonderful beginning to this series that is sure to delight fans of historical romance. My Thoughts:

I absolutely loved this heart-warming story from Patricia Davids! The Amish Midwife is a story of love, hope, faith, forgiveness, and second chances sprinkled with a generous dose of humor. Joseph Lapp, brooding neighbor and dairy goat farmer, has experienced his share of heart ache that has left him a bit of a recluse and his goats are nothing more than a nuisance to his neighbor and community mid-wife, Anne Stolzfus. However, these two seemingly mismatched neighbors suddenly find themselves working together in caring for Joseph's niece despite the rumors that begin to swirl through the close knit Amish community. Is it possible that Anne could be falling in love with this gruff and hard-hearted man? Will her charming smile and generous heart melt away Joseph's pain and heartache? I quickly fell in love with Anne's character; she's a strong and independent woman who understand the importance of trusting in her faith as well as the support of her community. With endearing characters and a well-developed story line, Davids' has created a romance that had me laughing one moment and crying the next. Although this novel is the third in the Lancaster Courtship Series, it reads quite well as a stand alone novel...but I'm now anxious to read the previous two novels as well! FOUR stars!

The first two novels in the Lancaster Courtships series are The Amish Bride by Emme Miller and The Amish Mother by Rebecca Kertz. The Amish Midwife is scheduled to be released on October 20th, 2015. Both Kindle and Paperback formats are currently available to pre-order.

Over the summer months we had to completely switch medications with hopes all would be right by the time school started....this has not been the case. In her debut novel, The Girls From See Saw Lane, Sandy Taylor has proven herself to be a very talented and gifted storyteller with an immense insight into family, friendship, love, and forgiveness. Dottie Perks and Mary Pickles, living in the seaside resort village of Brighton in East Sussex, England, develop a friendship in childhood that carries them well into early adulthood. They share their hopes and childhood dreams and become ever more inseparable as the years pass. But can this friendship endure an unintentional betrayal and the resulting heart-ache that follows? Is forgiveness possible while they still have the time together to do so? This is one of the most endearing, yet heart-breaking, novels that I have encountered in quite some time and will certainly not soon forget. Taylor's writing style is a treasure to behold with her ability to draw a reader into the story in a very intimate manner. I felt as though Dottie's and Mary's characters were so well-developed and quickly felt as though I were visiting with old friends. Witty and humorous dialogue written with such ease truly brought this story to life and swept me away between the pages. Filled with unexpected twists and turns, you'll want to keep the box of tissue nearby! This is the first installment in the Brighton Girls Trilogy and the second novel, Counting Chimneys, is scheduled to be release in the Spring of 2016...and I can't wait for this next installment! My Thoughts:

This was my first encounter with the Beach View Boarding House series by British author, Ellie Dean and I absolutely loved it! Set within England during the tumultuous period of WW II, Ellie Dean has created an emotionally gripping story with endearing characters that quickly captured my heart. As an American reader new to this particular genre of British sagas, I was immediately drawn into the daily impacts of WWII; Black Outs, Air Raids and personal Gas Masks quickly became a way of life during this period, as well as food rations and everyone serving the war efforts in anyway possible. Peggy Reilly's Beach View Boarding House quickly becomes a refuge for those being evacuated from the bombings of London and serves as the heart of this series. In this particular installment young Mary Jones arrives in Cliffehaven in search of a long hidden truth revealed within the pages of her father's diary. Filled with unexpected twists and turns throughout, I found myself unable to put this book down and found myself wanting more! Ellie Dean is a wonderfully talented story teller and one that had me reaching for the box of tissue on more than one occasion. As an American reader, I must admit some of the wartime acronyms were unfamiliar to me but didn't affect the overall story in anyway, in fact, I found myself googling and researching a bit and learning a great deal. And although this is the ninth installment in this series, it reads quite well as a stand alone novel but if you're like me you'll certainly want to read the remaining books in this endearing series. I highly recommend this with FIVE stars!

My Thoughts:

Holly Martin's romance novel, Christmas At Lilac Cottage, combines British wit and humor with romance and holiday goodness to create an enchanting love story sprinkled many laugh aloud moments. Set within the small coastal village of White Cliff Bay where everyone knows each other and gossip runs rampant, Penny Meadows suddenly finds herself falling in love with her new neighbor and tenant, Henry, giving a whole new meaning to "love thy neighbor." But is this new found attraction simply physical yearning or is it quite possible these two endearing characters are falling in love? Holly Martin's writing is absolutely wonderful! Filled with so much humor and tender emotions, I found myself laughing aloud on several occasions and at other times I was reaching for the box of tissues. With endearing characters and a very well-developed story line with unexpected twists and turns, I found it quite impossible to put this aside (I practically read this in one sitting!) This was my first encounter with Holly Martin and I just simply can't praise her enough. She is certainly a very gifted and talented story teller that I look forward to reading more from in the very near future. Christmas At Lilac Cottage is sure to warm your heart this Holiday season! FIVE stars!

My Thoughts:

I'm usually a bit hesitant when it comes to reading a novel written by several authors; I always fear there won't be enough continuity and the writing will become choppy and disconnected. However, The Last Chance Christmas Ball by Mary Jo Putney, Jo Beverley, Joanna Bourne, Patricia Rice, Nicola Cornick, Susan King, Anne Gracie and Cara Elliott (a.k.a The Word Wenches) quickly erased all doubts. These eight very talented ladies bring together eight unique and well-developed stories that maintain the theme and integrity of the novel as a whole which, in my opinion, is quite a triumph! Each story is filled with endearing characters who must face their own trials and tribulations with the courage to give love another chance during the most festive time of year. I thoroughly enjoyed the manner in which the characters were presented in several stories which truly enhanced the continuity and flow of the novel. It would be difficult to choose any one author's writing over the others simply because I really didn't view each author's contribution as separate but rather a part of the whole novel. However, if I had to choose a favorite character it would certainly be Lady Holly; the master-mind and matchmaker behind the Christmas Ball itself! This wonderfully written holiday Regency novel is sure to delight readers of Historical Romance and add a bit of magic and warmth to the upcoming holiday season! FIVE stars!

The story of "Ol' Blue Eyes" continues with Sinatra: The Chairman, picking up the day after Frank claimed his Academy Award in 1954 and had reestablished himself as the top recording artist in music. Frank's life post-Oscar was incredibly dense: in between recording albums and singles, he often shot four or five movies a year; did TV show and nightclub appearances; started his own label, Reprise; and juggled his considerable commercial ventures (movie production, the restaurant business, even prizefighter management) alongside his famous and sometimes notorious social activities and commitments.

My Thoughts:

With Frank Sinatra: The Chairman author James Kaplan has proven himself an expert biographer as he presents an in-depth look into not only Frank Sinatra, the singer and actor, but also Frank Sinatra, the man behind the multifaceted talents. Focusing a great deal on the mid- to late- 1950's, Kaplan reveals a side of Sinatra that many may not be familiar with (at least for this reader anyway). Behind the talent and fame, Frank Sinatra always felt like the insecure little boy from Hoboken, New Jersey trying to compete with "Big Boys". It's this insecurity and desire to rise above the rest that ultimately became the driving force behind Sinatra in all aspects of business and life. During the 1950's, Sinatra often worked on more than one movie at a time while still spending the wee hours of the mornings in a recording studio. Kaplan's thorough research and knowledge, reveals Sinatra's sense of tenacity where his music was concerned and how he would meticulously work on one arrangement until he achieved that perfect sound. It was also during this same period that Sinatra struggled with his failing marriage to Ava Gardner which became a source of immense grief. From the recording studios to Hollywood movie sets, Kaplan opens the door to allow the reader to travel back in time and to rub elbows with some of the biggest names of the period. Kaplan's writing is not only thorough and well-researched, but one that is also interwoven with an immense amount of integrity unlike previous Sinatra biographers over the years. Although I was rather intimated by this massive 992-page look into the life of Frank Sinatra, this was one of the best biographies I have read in quite some time and one that I would HIGHLY recommend to Sinatra fans, both young and old alike. FIVE stars!
