ST ANDREWS DRAKENSBERG RETREAT!

Meandering the winding Giants Castle Road in Central Drakensberg, my girlfriends and I found St Andrews Church, now a Retreat. Hugging the side of the road, this quaint, unassuming little church, built-in 1906 set in the middle of nowhere, the rolling green landscape with all evidence of African rural farm life surrounding it. The deep blue sky and puffy heavy white heavenly clouds, peering down upon it as if wrapping its arms around it from above. What seemed a quaint little church begged to differ as we entered the gates and drew nearer, the detail of the building jumped out at us. The contrast of the earthen stoned pathways, the earthy hue of stone with the green vines growing up it. The building, framed by the beautiful backdrop of the Drakensberg foothills. The gardens that have been lovingly tended to.

Rudy welcomed us. He had a wide inviting smile and a humble disposition. Rudy grabbed our luggage. We entered the buidling through the large, double volume solid wood doors............... As we walked into the church, it simply took our breath away, the high arched ceilings and doorways. The open plan reception areas were separated by stone architraves. It was absolutely magnificent. The sumptuous colours and lavish velvet soft furnishings and heirloom antiques, made it feel like a medieval banquet.

The decor in the bedrooms and crisp linen and gorgeous toiletries made this a splendid place to stay, to immerse yourself in the heavily scented water of the ball and claw bath and look out at the heavenly view, the sun streaming in and warming one's face.

Only 3 double rooms, this is an intimate place.

Self-catering only, with a well-equipped kitchen to die for it makes it easy not to resist cooking.

I suggest lazy lunches at many of the wonderful eateries on the midlands meander and a dinner of snacks and wine. We opted for Woolies snacks, after eating a late lunch in Nottingham Road, and therefore copious amounts of wine, snacks and good company as we lounged on comfortable seating with a wood fire burning and candlelight we chatted the night away.

The peace and tranquillity of it will blow you away. On the midlands route and easy access to the Drakensberg, Midlands Meander or a stopover en-route to and from Johannesburg, this is an ideal place to position yourself, or just get away from it all, bring your books and relax, relax, relax, immerse yourself in your own silent reverie!

The church is steeped in history and was originally built for the Weenen Boys School. The adjacent graveyard is evidence of a time past and quiet comes over one, as time stops as one nostalgically reflects on a place that echoes, bells ringing and children singing, laughter and good spirits!

A leisurely stroll along the Durban Promenade, a spring in my step, the sun beating down on our glistening white winter coats, a perfect 1st day of spring........................................,
crystal waters, deep blue sky and a sunny disposition. Durbanites are out and about, riding bikes, taking leisurely strolls, breakfasting, lunching or just enjoying the baking sun. A sign of what is to come, it promises to be a very hot, hot summer!

A wonderful afternoon of steamy, balmy, hot, hot Autumn days, I arrived at my rendezvous point, The Durban Botanical Gardens, early, thinking strategically, as I was not going to miss a single minute of this languid afternoon affair. A picnic under the large protective trees, sheltering me and keeping me hidden, my secret mission, a meeting with Khan, Neil, Paul and Glenn. An ambitious quest, 4 for the price of one. Only to find that I would be sharing my decadent afternoon with many, many other women, men and children, a 5000 strong army load.

Yes, the beautiful people had all come out to play, donning their Parlotones armour, ready to do battle of song and dance with our now most famous contemporary SA band!

And they did not disappoint. The atmosphere began laid back as everyone sought refuge from the warm naked African sun. Blankets on the floor, beers in hand and a picnic basket full of goodies, life is good, right.? Gangs of Ballet (a local Durban band) were the opening act, a band that has great promise.

When The Parlotones finally took the stage, the mood changed. The excited crowd gave a standing ovation in anticipation of this quads appearance. The music started, and the songs kept on coming, some known, some not (promoting new album), but the charisma of these 4 boys is catching, and I fell for their charm and grace. An electrifying stage presence and an incredibly talented, gifted group. The boys' seemed to enjoy the Funsanzi welcome, hosted by Old Mutual, Durban Tourism and East Coast Radio. A great day in the sun, was had by all. I had waited a long time to see this World Class band. I will definitely make a point of seeing them again on their next round trip to Durbs.

And as with every good thing, the promise of darkness marked the end of a great afternoon, and my affair was over all too soon. A few months back we Durbanites had the pleasure of hosting Prime Circle, another fantastic SA band and still to come this year is Mango Groove and the world-renowned Johnny Clegg.

HOLOCAUST MUSEUM DURBAN - IN REMEMBERANCE OF 6 MILLION JEWS EXTERMINATED

Few words, if any, can explain the feeling one gets when one walks through these doors, but my body says it all.................................. as my eyes well up and my heart sinks into my stomach, a knot in my throat and the hairs on my skin stand erect.

This place is beautifully designed, in the loving memory of the dead. The peace and tranquillity, in stark contrast to the harrowing evil, are depicted on these walls. The red and black symbol of the devil himself. This memorial place, lest we should forget. These hard lessons are to be learned, and the sufferers, angels every last one of them must have their stories told. This sad account, illustrated in a beautiful way on these walls where time stands immemorial!

The museum is an ongoing visual narrative, with low lighting and soft background music to lessen the blow by blow account of 6 million Jews stripped of all their dignity and humanity, left to die in the most inhumane of circumstance that no human nor creature of God should endure. One can easily meander the corridors of larger than life photographs and documented live visuals. Perhaps the most disturbing for me was the photographs of the children and being a mother imagining the terror of a mother who is wrenched away from her children, not knowing if she will ever see them again, or what suffering they will endure, it is too much for me to comprehend.

To end it off was the remembrance of that most famous of children, Anne Frank! A depiction of her room behind the bookcase and excerpts from her diary pinned on these walls leaves one feeling filled with emotion.

It was with a heavy heart that I left this place. It caused me to have many questions of my own humanity. The fallibility of us all who live in Africa! For genocide is a reality here, an ongoing crime against humanity, Somalia, Rwanda, Uganda, Ethiopia have all endured this kind of hate and as South Africa watches political leaders such as Julius Malema chant 'kill the boer' and other hate songs, inciting the large population of black youth in this country one can only but be alert to the dangers that could be ahead. We have moved up a place on the Genocide Watch Organisations List.

We moved from the darkness into the light and on through The Rememberance Garden. The soft, soothing water features and indigenous landscaping creates a tranquil setting to go and immerse oneself in, whilst trying to absorb what one just witnessed. I placed my stone at the foot of the children's memorial.

The coffee shop and gift shop was a true delight with the most gorgeous goodies to purchase and offered some retail therapy. The cappuccino and smoked salmon, cream cheese bagel and muffins were delicious.

We visited the museum right at the lead up to Pesach 'passover' and all the gifts were on display. The Jewish Holocaust Museum, Jewish Club and Synagogue can be found on the main North Beach Front of Durban on K E Masinga Road

THULA THULA ELEPHANT WHISPERERS GOODBYE!

'Tonight at Thula Thula, the whole herd arrived at the main house, home to Lawrence and I.
We had not seen them here for a very long time. Extraordinary proof of animal sensitivity and awareness that only a few humans can perceive. And Lawrence was one of them. Thank you for your wonderful messages. Lawrence's legacy will be with us forever at Thula Thula.' Lawrence's wife.

When one life vibrates with another, as Lawrence Anthony's did, owner of Thula Thula Game Reserve and wildlife conservationist, there are no words to describe this uniqueness that should be so commonly inherent in us all, but, sadly is foreign to us all! The same could not be said of Lawrence, whose soul resonated with the earth and all it's creatures and whose vibrations will forever be felt and celebrated, his legacy will live on!

RIP Lawrence Anthony, Sahle kahle, gone but not forgotten.

And it is this road that I travelled to a place in the mist and mountains, the winding roads, the ever green of the land, and if you stood on the precipice overlooking the valleys one could but only hold one's breath for the sheer beauty of it, as the looming clouds fell over it, jealously protecting it from the world, a place of absolute and true honesty, paradise unknown, a room with a view, it is this Kwazulu that few foreigners are privy to, a land of kings, a land of many riches and many a corruption of it, but a place one would be poorer for not having seen in their journey to lands afar, true Africa! Amazing Grace!

Our convoy left for Qunu Falls in December on a Friday. There is something about the South Coast that is special to me, perhaps it is the nostalgia of many a trip with my parents when I was growing up, the swaying sugar cane and curious seas that reveal themselves at intervals, peeping through the rolling hills. we veered off at Park Rynie and began the ascent in to the interiors, the hills of Zululand and finally we arrived at our destination.

Arriving late afternoon, the clouds rolled in and the mist put down it's veil, hiding the beauty of the place. The beautiful peacock greeted us with a wonderful display. We were shown to our chalets, small one bedroom rondavels consisting of a double bed in main room, two sleeper couches, television with satellite and dvd machine and dining table in the lounge, a bathroom and a fitted kitchen. Small but comfortable.
The next morning the mist departed and the beauty of the place was revealed to us. Rolling hills upon rolling hills!

The indoor and outdoor facilities at Suntide Qunu Falls are very good, clean, beautifully kept grounds, a full indoor entertainment centre for kids and adults alike (for bad weather) and the stunning outdoor facilities with this exceptional backdrop. The hikes and walks with varying degrees of difficulty, we chose the Qunu Falls walk, a gentle decline down to the valley and then a stunning view of the falls. It was the walk back up that proved a tad challenging. Horse riding, a little animal farm and plenty of fresh air makes this a children's paradise!

A LONG WEEKEND IN THE WESTERN CAPE

I have always wanted to go to Hermanus to watch the whales and this annual phenomenon, which is known world-wide, is right here on our doorstep! With the long weekend coming up my husband decided to treat the family and so we flew to Cape Town on the Friday afternoon. We stayed at the V & A Waterfront for the evening so that we could enjoy a bit of the city before heading off to Hermanus the following day.

The Saturday produced perfect weather so we decided to have breakfast at the Waterfront and see some of the sights on offer. The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront has become South Africa's most visited destination and it is not hard to see why. Set in the midst of Cape Town's busy commercial harbour there is plenty to enjoy from pubs and restaurants to shops and craft markets.

With the magnificent backdrop of Table Mountain there are also world-class hotels and luxury apartments in the residential marina.

The Victorian Clock Tower, which was a focal point in the Waterfront's design, was the original Port Captain's Office and was completed in 1882.

After breakfast we took the N2 out of Cape Town towards Somerset West. There we took the R44 to the coast and made our way to Gordon's Bay. This is the alternative to the quicker route over Sir Lowry's pass, but if you have the time, the trip is worth it. You will experience the most wonderful ocean views as well as passing over the Steenbras River and through the small, picturesque town of Betty's Bay.

We arrived in Hermanus at about midday and booked in to the Avalon-on-Sea B & B which is very conveniently situated within walking distance of the centre of town. Harald and Sue run a charming guesthouse offering a very comfortable stay. Nothing was too much trouble (even having my three young daughters to stay) and they are very helpful. I highly recommend them.

Hermanus is about 115 kms from Cape Town and lies along Walker Bay on the southern coast of the Western Cape. It is known for being the best land-based, whale watching destination in the world and for the Southern Right whales that come into the bay to mate and calve. They start appearing in July, but the best time to see them is around September when the annual whale festival is held. However, we were lucky enough to see them at the beginning of August, with some of them really close to shore! The Whale Crier (apparently the only one in the world) blows his kelp horn each time a whale has been spotted.

After booking in at the B & B we walked to the town to the well-known cliffs from where there is a great view across Walker Bay. Within minutes we heard the whale crier's horn (which sounds awfully similar to a vuvuzela!) and right there in front of us was a majestic southern right whale! This particular one put on a wonderful display propelling itself right out of the water and then crashing back in with a mighty spray of water preparing for its next leap. Simply wonderful! Once hunted locally they are now protected.

The next morning we had good weather again so we decided on a whale-watching cruise. I would have been quite happy to go on one of the boats that leave from Hermanus, but my husband was persuaded to try Dyer Island Cruises in Gansbaai, which is about 40 kms from Hermanus, as you get to view great white sharks as well as whales.

I was apprehensive to say the least as I am neither a boat nor a sea person and even after two doses of sea-sickness tablets, I found myself sitting on the boat, far out on the ocean, with my eyes closed wishing that I was back on solid ground! So, if you are like me in this respect don't try it. Having said that, however, seeing the great white is an awesome experience and I was happy that I was safely on the boat and not in the shark diving cages on the boat in front of us!

I was watching the guy standing on the back of the boat with a huge bucket-load of chum. His feet were so close to the water that I had visions of Jaws shooting out of the water and taking one of his legs off! He started flinging chum into the water and in no time two of these awesome creatures were there for us to see!

As well as the chumming, decoys are also thrown into the water to attract the sharks. Being this close to them I was amazed at their speed and I found it quite difficult to photograph them because they move so quickly.

From there we sailed on to the Pearly Beach area and just as we were starting to think that we were not going to see any whales, there they were - these giants of the oceans, quietly floating in the water in front of us, graceful and majestic.

My youngest daughter, who turned 10 that day, captured this shot of a whale that was very close to the boat. The "fin" at the back is its tail and you can clearly see the two blowholes at the back of its head.

The cruise also goes to Geyser Rock which is the home of about 60,000 Cape Fur seals before returning to Gansbaai. Well worth it!

We returned to Cape Town on the Monday and spent our last night at the V & A again. On the Tuesday the weather was glorious so we decided to take a drive to Hout Bay and along Chapmans Peak.

We carried on until we got to the little fishing village of Kalk Bay and chose to go the famous Brass Bell restaurant for lunch. Afterwards a leisurely stroll around the quaint harbour with its colourful fishing boats bobbing in the water was a must in the warm winter sunshine.

The local fishermen could be seen standing on the jetty with their lines in the water while further back others were selling their catches of the day.

So much to see on such a beautiful day - the gulls...

One last stop before we flew back home was Rhodes Memorial which is a memorial to Cecil John Rhodes - an english-born South African politician.

... and at the bottom of the steps is a bronze staute of a horesman.

A lovely weekend especially having seen the whales and with enough time to do and see a few more things as well. For me it was another reminder that we have such a beautiful diverse country with so many things to offer!

HIGHMOOR NATURE RESERVE PASS - KAMBERG!

Let the senses unwind and enjoy this solitude of a mountain and a stream, the force of life itself, the cradle of humankind and to be here to witness this extraordinary place, time stands still and all your senses awake and the darkness dissipates and you begin to open up your mind.
The last of our December Holiday fun in The Drakensberg, Kamberg region and on a slightly overcast day we decided to picnic half way up High Moor Pass, taking advantage of the beautiful scenery and natural rock pools and water slides. Pure pleasure!

The feeling of life running in between your toes, sending electric currents up your body to revitalise your soul. Quietly sitting here watching the children at play one realizes what truly makes this world work, harmony with nature and oneself, everything else is immaterial.

If you travel to the the top of this pass, the journey offering spectacular views of the mountain ranges, one will reach Highmoor Nature Reserve which boasts lovely walking trails and one will bear witness to beautiful bird and plant life!

KAMBERG BUSHMAN PAINTING HIKE IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN!

The Berg in spring........a strangely exciting place where mountains get lost in the clouds and the long emerald grasses swirl with the hint of a breath, an artscape so profound that it was said to have inspired JRR Tolkien as a young boy growing up in South Africa and was the inspiration for his landscapes described in his most famous of books, ' The Lord of The Rings Trilogy'. A requiem, a symphony, paying homage to The San who once roamed these lands and who were persecuted by Boer and Zulu alike, forcing them to flee in to the bowels of the caves, hiding from the evil that lay below, in stark contrast to the beautiful land that was so enticing in its riches.
We were in The Kamberg in December and we were hosting our daughter Bianca's exchange student friend from Belgium. On a cooler day in spring we went for a gentle hike in The Kamberg Nature Reserve, taking a slow ' incline' in to the heavens and earthiness of The Kamberg Caves, where The San left their legacy. The beginning of the trail proved very exciting when we encountered a troop of baboons perched on our path on a higher hill above us. There loud calls echoing their surround sound. These large (even at a distance) menacing looking creatures were more concerned about us and disappeared before we got too close.

Up and up we went until the large open expanses became more confined and the trail took on a different landscape, gradually changing from never ending hills to rocky out crops. On ward we went until eventually we reached a small shallow cave with a natural water feature streaming down creating a sheer curtain and we sat mesmerised by the lovely sound of water as it hit the natural pebbles on the ground below. We sat there taking in the stunning surreal world before us, overlooking The Garden of Eden. The Spring rains were late and so although the grass had turned green and a yellow hue the abundance of flora that is usually evident at this time of year, had not unfortunately reared their pretty heads.

We needed to press beyond the cave as the clouds rolled in and the sky grew dark and angry. We encountered the river that feeds the small rock formation at the cave, creating the wonderful water feature. But we still needed to venture forth, if we were to reach the bushman paintings, but alas it was not meant to be, as the sky thickened and the mist cast its shadow and we could not go on as the skies parted and the large droplets positioned themselves all around us. And so the descent began. It is a beautiful area and a lovely walk, beyond the river the incline gets steeper and so one would need a medium level of fitness to reach the bushman paintings in The Kamberg Nature Reserve, but a stunning hike it was indeed. The Parks Board also offer guided walks.

BIRTHDAYS,DELFI GREEK CAFE,BLONDE AMBITION, MO's NOODLES & MAD HATTERS TEA PARTY!

Ok so you are probably wondering what Delfi The Greek, Blonde Ambition, Mo's Noodles & Mad Hatters Tea all have in common, well it seems they all have ME in common!

I awoke on Wednesday 21st September to lots of well wishes and celebration for this my 42nd birthday, not particularly a special one, but my friends and family certainly made it seem so and the love kept on coming............................................................................................................................

That evening was a beautiful Spring night in Durban and my daughter, hubby, my mother and I, took an early evening stroll up our road to our little Greek corner cafe/eatery, Delfi. A quaint little Greek Restaurant with wholesome good old fashioned 'home made' style Greek food and prices to match. No pomp and ceremony here, you are treated like family. On lovely warm evenings the restaurant spills out on to the pavement, as you would imagine it to be, if you were on a little island somewhere in Greece. We started with the mezze platter (my favourite) a combination of feta rolled in roasted brinjal, fresh cucumber, olives, haloumi cheese etc. with dips to dunk.

My mother and Terence had the Kota Lemonata (Lemon and herb chicken), with vegtables and chips. Bianca and I had the calamari with chips (their chips are the best you will find in Durban). I usually love their peri peri chicken livers and Maria's secret peri peri sauce is amazing. The peri peri prawns and Lamb Shank are also a firm favourite with regulars. Although I was too full on this eve, their Baklava with layers of nuts and cinammon & spice and all things nice, with the crisp thinner outer of fine phyllo pastry and golden syrup is usually a must have. The restaurant is licensed, however you can take your own and pay a nominal corkage fee.

Friday night arrived and my girlfriends had planned to take me on the town. They decided to do something fun with me and they were going to dress me up as a 'Bunny Girl'. However I don't think this would have gone down too well with my other half, as laid back as he may be, and so we decided upon 'The Blonde Ambition Party Tour', which meant all the brunettes in the house (including me), had to go 'legally blonde' for one night, because 'gentlemen prefer blondes' and the singles amongst us aimed to find out if 'blondes do have more fun!' This was arranged and donning my Princess Happy Birthday Crown and Goldi Locks, with a laugh or two from my husband and daugher before departing, off I went to meet all my girlfriends at The House of Curries, a very popular, festive spot with a mix of all age groups blending together, in the famous Florida Road Restaurant District.

This pub/Indian Restaurant is a unique blend of Indian 'take away' style cuisine, which is really delectable, good value Durban Curry, including the famous bunny chow (curry in a loaf of bread), can be consumed here, and an English Sports Bar/Pub with a typical South African outdoor setting. Although pubs are not my scene and it is not usual to find me in one, this was a 'special' occasion and the evening proved to be very festive and admittedly we stayed longer than originally planned. As the evening wore on the girls became very animated and very festive indeed!

Eventually we made our way upstairs to Mo's Noodles, an exciting blend of Western/Asian food influences and styles and a minimalistic, contemporary decor. My favourite at this restaurant is the seared calamari with hint of lemon and chilli complemented by a feta and lentil salad. Others in our party had the fillet medallions with mushroom sauce, wasabi mash and vegetables and the ginger and lime calamari tentacles and veg noodles (another favourite of mine) ...........delicious!

The next morning I awoke and got all dressed up with nowhere to go! Sadly due to Spring rain the last of my birthday celebrations was cancelled, my Mad Hatters Tea Party at Botanic Gardens. And I was sooooo looking forward to tucking in to the scrumptioussssss crumpets and lashings of syrup and cream from the Botanics Tea Garden, whilst enjoying the familiar chatter of family and friends under the beautiful ancient trees. But alas it was not to be on this day. And so with a TWINKLE in my eye, this is just another reason to celebrate on another day!

JOHANNESBURG,GAUTRAIN,SANDTON,EMPERORS PALACE,ROSEBANK MARKET

I arrived in Johannesburg Oliver Tambo Airport from Durban King Shaka Airport, via Kulula Airlines, the service was good, the flight was on time, my bags didn't get interfered with and all was right with the world. The first day of my trip I found myself on my own in this lovely hotel, The Aviator, with it's lovely colonial verandahs and easy living, retro style.

I decided to explore a little and since the hotel, although a gorgeous little oasis, is in the midst of an industrial park, hence the decision to catch the Gautrain in to Sandton. Very nervous and 'armed and dangerous', Lance my driver dropped me off at the Rhodesfield Station. I remember as we drove through the industrial town, I kept asking Lance if I would be okay at the station by myself, and him laughing and reassuring me that I would be fine. And he was right. The station, newly built for the Gautrain is perfectly safe, very clean and security conscious. So when the train arrived I boarded and 15 minutes

later I found myself in the heart of Sandton. Equally as nervous as when I embarked on this journey, and with no one to meet me on the other side, I asked security where Sandton City was and off I went, in that general direction.
In the day, Sandton felt safe and easy to walk around, unlike some parts of Johannesburg. So there I was all on my ownsome in this biiiiig city. Just a face without a name as the crowds rushed around me in an ordered chaos.

The large overbearing buildings, expensive Range Rovers, sports cars and the like, make you realize that this city is truly the Place of Gold, the financial powerhouse of SA! and for some of us poorer relations down South, an ostentatious, fast moving, unashamed, unapologetic, decadent city paved with golden streets, even the sunsets are golden here!

My shoe fetish was tantalised by the wonderful variety of shoes, tall ones, short ones, pretty ones, bling ones, so, so many to choose, but unfortunately I mostly window shopped because the price tags attached to them were a bit too rich for my blood. All the top designers both African and Western/European are at home here.

Nelson Mandela Square, is exactly that, a big square with an Italian Piazza flavour of little cafes and eateries spilling out on to the square. The main attraction is of course the large bronze statue of Madiba himself, as he stands majestically centre stage to the entrance of the Nelson Mandela Square.

That evening after dinner my friend and I went to check out the Emperors Palace, a large Vegas style casino with a hotel attached, The Peermont D' Oreale. My friend, who was up on business the day before, stayed at the Peermont D'Oreale, a five star casino hotel and she said it was absolutely sumptuous, and every bit luxurious.

Casinos aren't my thing so this wasn't of much interest to me, the restaurant quarter was noisy and busy with lots of choice, but personally I prefer more personal, intimate restaurants.
Sunday was market day and a long awaited trip to the Rosebank Sunday Roof Market ( last visited by me ten years ago).

What once was a lovely antique and craft market, has now become more of an African Market, so curio from all over Africa can be found here, hand embroided linen from Madagascar, masks, carvings, beading, you name it, you can find it here. A perfect place for tourists to come and buy trinkets etc. to take home with them.

I had a delightful Thai foot and neck massage that forced me to close my eyes and relax and dream of being on a beach in Thailand. Rosebank Mall itself was really happening, it was busy and although the weather on Sunday was gloomy and depressing, the vibe in Rosebank more than made up for it.

We had breakfast at Europa and met a delightful owner of the restaurant who is originally from Durban. I had the smoked salmon eggs benedict and Jackie had the English breakfast, both were very wholesome, hearty meals.

Alas after a long weekend of shopping and coffee breaks and eating out, it was time for me to embark on my journey homeward. I flew back on Velvet Sky, and again, the service was good, the flight was on time and my bags weren't tampered with when I arrived back in Durban. I have to ask, is this all that there is to Gauteng, shopping malls, restaurants, casinos and gold mines? I think not, and I didn't get to see half of it. If there is ever a next time, the apartheid museum and cradle of human kind are definitely on my bucket list! As my plane descended I could just make out the lit up ships out at sea and I knew I was home, back at the coast and back to a slower pace, and I was happy to be home with my people!

THE AVIATOR LIFE AIRPORT HOTEL - JOHANNESBURG

The Aviator Life Hotel decor is a charming blend of Metro/Industrial chic with a distinct retro vibe and an aviation twist. The main hotel consists of deep colonial wrap around verandahs, with large over sized lounges, overlooking the indigenous gardens enveloping the swimming pool, which lends itself to the South African Life Style. This architecture reminded me so much of my home town Morningside in Durban, and it gave me a sense of home away from home!

On Saturday early eve after a long day of shopping in Sandton and taking the Gautrain 'Home' we found ourselves nursing large cold, cold refreshments from 'The Buzz Bar', as we sat undercover in this area of the Life Hotel and reflected on the days travels, listening to the tranquility of the birds as they were getting ready to nest, whilst watching the African sun burn it's brilliant hue of reds and golds and finally resting it's weary head from the naked light of day. A peaceful setting for the tired traveller, indeed.

The atmosphere at dinner was very inviting, The Buzz restaurant with its wooden floors, plush seating and low lighting made for a cosy evening setting. I ordered the fillet steak with chips, cream spinach and pepper sauce (very delicious), my friend ordered the 'Durban' lamb curry and being Durbanites, we were skeptical, however it proved to be a very good, aromatic curry with roti and rice and sambals

The time spent at this hotel was very relaxing and the staff were unbelievably attentive. Lance our driver took us to and fro to the Rhodesfield Gautrain Station with the utmost ease and he was always on time and always greeted us with a smile.

Our bedroom was neat, minimalistic, retro design and although the room consisted mainly of the two beds, it was ample sufficiency for a few nights stay. Unfortunately we did have the road facing room and the street noise could be a problem for people who are noise sensitive.

The hotel is not situated in the best location, it is in the heart of the industrial area of Kempton Park, however it is only 3 kilometres drive from the airport and the hotel provides all the transit one requires, which is included in the package. Because the area was fairly far from the happening places in Johannesburg, as two women travellers, we decided not to venture too far from the hotel at night. But overall this was a lovely hotel, with a lovely atmosphere and I enjoyed my stay here. If you are on business or in transit to another destination then this is certainly a very good option.

MADAME ZINGARA - A TACTILE AFFAIR!

SHoooooooooooooooo! Don't kiss and tell, but alas, pray tell, that this is a tactile, decadent affair that I wish to share! A private moment of smoldering, sensual, luscious, rich, vibrant, enchantment. An invitation to transport you back in time to the 1900's, where smoke and mirrors prevailed, a trip down the rabbit hole, a peek in to Zingara's Boudoir, chandelier swinging angels, candalabras, there is wickedness all around. Strange and wonderful creatures abound..............................................................

'It's a little bit funny, this feeling inside .............................................'

One almost expects Ewan Mcgregor to be sitting on the large lit up heart shaped arch, serenading Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge, "My Gift is my song............ and this ones for you! And you can tell everybody, that this is your song, it may be quite simple now, now that it's done, I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind, that I put down in words, how wonderful life is, now your'e in the world!'

Enter this Carnavale and be prepared to be enveloped in a mysterious world! The show, nothing short of brilliant, intoxicating and just plain good fun...... Singing divas, floating angels, dancing lovers on roller skates, Mongolian contortionists, a casual, laise faire attitude to fine dining and pure, unadulterated entertainment. Photographing the show was off limits, but this was a treat like none other. To dance and sing to 70's disco, 'I will survive', 80's Pointer Sisters and going back to our roots, Miriam Makeba's click click song, Brenda Fassie and other greats, this was an exotic, eclectic mix that appeals to the sensabilities of young and old. An excuse to get out and dress up, but not a place for the fainting wall flowers.

And if you have no outfit to wear, do not despair, there is plenty for you to fair, at the little shop of horrors,

The fun is in the trying on!

The food and wine was soooo divine, a magical treat, mezze platters, pasta pillows for middles, Belgian Choc and Chilli Sauce draped over fillet steak, Salmon or Lamb Shank for main, and then the 3 choice platter of sweet treats, melba, strawberry mousse and custard creme brule'.

And when all was said and done, we left this fantastical display of excellence and made our way home. Madame Zingara, if you come next year, I will be first in line to wine and dine!

OCEAN REEF HOTEL & LUXURY VILLAS - ZINKWAZI BEACH KWAZULU NATAL

If I just lie here and breathe, I can feel my heart slowing to the pace of the constant rythmn of waves breaking, the fluidity and liquidity of water caressing the sand. It was this sound and the beauty of lush coastal forest that I found myself enveloped in, that lulled me in to an incredible sense of lightness of being, a lullaby to fall asleep to and awake to in the morn. The Zinkwazi Ocean Reef Hotel and Luxury Villas has nestled itself in this sub tropical paradise, a haven for birds, insects, monkeys and other small animal life. The wooden walkway through the forest, under the protection of the canopy, offers a glimpse of a sparkling jewel of deep blue, peeping through the trees and at last a full view of this glory of Indian Ocean and untouched golden beach.

The Hotel is a minimalistic fusion of African/Balinese influences, understated, modern luxury, which rings true of many of Signature Life's Hotels. A laid back yet luxurious attitude to coastal living, the emphasis of the hotel is the transparent view point beyond the foyer, Bamboo Restaurant, the patio and rim flow pool to the sea view, that seeks you out and commands your attention, beyond the beyond.

The hotel was fully booked and therefore I could not sneak a peek at the hotel rooms, however the self catering villa that I stayed at with family and friends was very spacious and perfectly comfortable. The gracious consideration to South African entertaining and our excellent all year round weather (this was our winter) was evident in the open plan lounge, kitchen and dining area and the large sliding glass doors that spilled out on to the deck area that had a dining table and was equipped with a large gas braai (because no place can call itself proudly South African if it does not have a braai facility of some sort).

The Zinkwazi Beach in front of the hotel is wild and vast, however the small rock pools that surface at low tide is a child's paradise, to catch fish, wallow in the shallows, catch crabs, build sandcastles and enjoy the warm African sun and fresh air.

On the first day of our stay we found ourselves further down the beach in the expansive bay, where swimming and surfing is safe and life guards are at hand to assist any troubled bather. The adjacent lagoon mouth was cut off from the sea, but only separated by a sand bank. It offers another lovely bathing area and is excellent for water sports options, such as canoeing up the river, fishing etc. There is a laid back beach cafe that sits right on the beach, where you can go and kick back and enjoy a refreshment or two.

The beautiful Harold Johnson Nature Reserve is 6 km from the river mouth on the Thukele river bank. It lends itself to wonderful nature trails and picnic areas with a small Zulu museum and camping spots. We never got there on this visit as a weekend is far too short to enjoy the full extent of the area.

Zinkwazi is a beautiful, untouched paradise of beach and bush only 80 km from Durban and The Zinkwazi Ocean Reef Hotel sits majestically on the hill, peeping out through the forest canopy and is definitely a place worth visiting!

KAMBERG - DRAKENSBERG KWAZULU NATAL IN AUTUMN - A VISUAL PERSPECTIVE

Earlier this month we decided to take a quick weekend break in the Kamberg. Only about an hour and a half from Durban this is one of the most beautiful areas in South Africa and coming across it in full autumn splendour is exceptional!

FRANSCHOEK - CAPE WINE ROUTE SOUTH AFRICA 2010

Bruce and I decided to take a well-deserved break and the long weekend in August was the perfect time to do just that. With our good friends, Kim and Terence, looking after our girls we flew down to Cape Town on the Friday afternoon with other good friends, Andrew and Tina. As it turned out Andrew knows the Franschhoek/Stellenbosch area like the back of his hand so he was the designated driver and I would take over between wine farms .

We arrived after dark and off-loaded our things at our weekend "home" - the self catering Franschhoek Apartments. The unit was compact but provided all the necessary requirements in addition to being very close to the town.

We decided that we would only stock the apartment with tea and coffee and that we would eat out for all our meals so that we could savour the local fare and try out new things. Two days may not seem long but it is enough time when you are eating out 24/7. Friday night's choice was the French Connection Bistro which is patronised largely by the locals. They have a varied menu and the food is very good. The friendly manager came over to us during the evening and together with some complimentary tickets to the wine tasting at Cabriere Wine Estate, gave us some good tips on where to go in the area.

First stop on Saturday morning was Rickety Bridge Wine Estate which is just outside Franschhoek. As soon as we entered the wine tasting room I could see that this was the perfect place to kick off the weekend as Bruce and Andrew settled themselves (rather quickly) into the comfortable seats in front of the lovely log fire. I could see that their visit would be a fairly lengthy one, and as it was still only 9 o'clock in the morning, I persuaded Tina to accompany me to a pancake place I had seen in town for breakfast.

The aptly named Pancake Cafe is a quaint little restaurant that shares a space with a lovely gift shop called Due South. We started off with a bacon and spinach pancake and rounded off our breakfast with a banana and caramel one. Absolutely yummy - so much so that we wanted to take the guys there for an early breakfast on our way home on the Monday morning, but unfortunately they weren't open yet when it was time for us to leave.

We headed back to Rickety Bridge to fetch Bruce and Andrew who by all accounts had a very enjoyable time there. Andrew drove off with such gusto that the gravel on the driveway went flying! He assured me that he was perfectly fine, but I relished the opportunity to relieve him of his driving duties when Tina (thankfully) asked him to stop at the gate so that she could photograph the lavender bushes!

From there we decided to use the complimentary tickets for Cabriere Wine Estate and I must say that were it not for the tickets we may not have gone there and it is definitely worth the visit. Set into the side of a hill the underground cellar is beautifully done out and the cellar master, Archim von Arnim spins a good yarn! However, having said that make sure that you have plenty of time on your hands because although he is very entertaining, he is a tad long-winded! In between regaling you with his wonderful stories you are also treated to the Sabrage - the process of removing a champagne cork from a bottle using a sabre. For this demonstration he chooses a few ladies from the audience to assist him. Once the cork has popped he takes an obligatory kiss from his assistant after which he "knights" them with his sabre/sword and presents with them with the cork!

After about two hours I found myself thinking about lunch and so we headed off to the Moreson Wine Estate (just past Rickety Bridge) and the Bread and Wine Restaurant there for lunch. We ordered two cold meat platters and a foccahio bread, which was more like a loaf than the usual flat variety, but excellent none the less. With a glass or two of white to wash that down we decided to walk around and explore our surroundings and came across an orchid (hot) house. With the actual plants brought in and sold there they have a huge selection from which to choose. Bruce and Andrew, both being engineers, soon got chatting to one of the owners about the building itself, all of which was new with a little bit of construction still going on.

After lunch we headed back to town to explore the many lovely little shops along the main street of Franschhoek itself. Tina and I took a leisurely walk from one end to the other, buying the odd gift here and there. We walked as far as the Hugenot Memorial and went into the adjoining cemetry where we learned a little bit of the history of the place just by reading inscriptions on the stones. Many of the graves have been there for well over a hundred years and bear testament to the hardships endured by people so long ago.

Many of the buildings are reminiscent of the past and so to are the houses with their quaint gardens. Most of the shops in Franschhoek are to be found in the main street and there is lots to see and do from many different eateries to bookshops and plenty more in between.

Sunday morning brought in the rain, but we were not about to let that stop us. We decided to head off to Stellenbosch where we admired the many impressive buildings and statues to be found around the town.

A must see is Oom Samie se Winkel. The moment you walk through the doors you are transported to a different era and you are reminded of the South Africa of old with its many items on offer.

Right next door we found Mellisa's Food Shop and it didn't take much persuading to settle into the warmth and cosiness of the interior and enjoy a delicious brunch!

As it turned out Sunday was going to be a busy day so we made brief stops at Blaauwklipen and Spier Wine Estates before heading off to the piece de resistance of the day (at least from Bruce and Andrew's perspective) - Mooiberge.

Mooiberge is essentially a farmstall on the R44 out of Stellenbosch. It is best known for its strawberry fields and the vast army of metal scarecrows guarding them.

They sell a large selection of fresh produce and dried fruit and nuts, but that aside they have an amazing range of estate wines, liquers, brandy and whiskey to choose from with an impressive cellar holding the more vintage stocks. The thing about Mooiberge is that you end up spending an awful lot of time there trying to decide what you are going to buy - but I suppose that is all part of the fun!

When we eventually managed to drag Bruce and Andrew away from Mooiberge we made our way back to Franschhoek stopping in at the Graham Beck Wine Estate on the way. This is another beautiful and well maintained estate boasting a gleaming cellar and welcoming visitors area. Realising that we had not done much wine tasting that day, we decided to stick around and enjoy what was on offer. It was well worth it and we left there having added to our already burgeoning wine purchases!

By the time we left Graham Beck it was late afternoon and although it had stopped raining, an icy wind was now blowing down from the mountains. We decided that after all the fancy food we had had over the weekend we would like to settle for something more plain and we choose to try out the Franschhoek Station Pub and Grill where a good old fish and chips dinner and a few sherries hit the spot really well.
The next morning we were up early as we had to be at Cape Town airport by midday and Bruce and Andrew had decided that we still needed to make another essential stop at Mooiberge!!! A last treat as we were leaving Franschhoek was seeing that the mountain that overlooks the town was covered in snow which had fallen overnight! A quick breakfast at Mellisa's in Stellenbosch and, of course, the stop-in at Mooiberge and we were on our way home.

An absolute must at any time of the year, but very special in winter with the right company!

BOTANIC GARDENS - DURBAN

Going nowhere slowly! This is what life feels like here at Botanics in autumn in the midst of the chaos of our city and everyday life, you can come here, to this place and throw down a blanket and lay your weary head under a shaded tree with the dappled light making patterns on your face and close your eyes and imagine and dream what ever dream you wish to dream, fade away, listen to the quietness of a bird on the water, total peace and tranquility, rid yourself of the noise, fill your lungs with green air and float away, open your mind and let your senses unwind .............................................

Or you could have a four year old with you and have to take in the beauty and tranquility of the place in a mad, frenetic, bursting head rush of energy, colour, activity and enthusiasm of a babe. Either way this is a magical place to meander, sit on a park bench, lie on a blanket or enjoy with the kids. There is plenty of space for the lovers and mothers of the world.

And so on our journey Cara and I went, hand in hand, Cara leading me to the imaginery beat in her head, as she skipped, hopped and danced along the paved roads, following her quest, forever bound to her sweet, sweet imagination. Through the sunken garden I followed, past the metallic shiny sculptures & in and out of the cycad forest.

Still on we pressed, seeking out that which cannot be sought, under tree, bush, flower, water, but still we continued on, up and up, past the Japanese Zen Garden, up the stairs to the top of the world and back again.................................A childs fantasy playground!

Not even the bell tower, nor the Victorian water oracles could lead us to the place that Cara had in her little head and then eventually her little imagination grew tired and like all four year olds she wanted to go back to her mommy and there we found her mom, resting on the blanket in the shade, taking a deep breath as her world was rudely awoken by the love of a four year old.

On a Sunday there is often music in the park, The Kzn Philharmonic, or one of the popular local bands, Parlotones, Prime Circle, Mango Groove, Freshly Ground, Just Jinger, can all be seen performing here. Pack a picnic basket and a blanket and chill out under the trees, there is no better way to spend a Sunday! (All photographs by Kim Hogben)

ESIWENI LODGE NAMBITI PRIVATE GAME RESERVE

The peace and solitude of a mountain, the soothing sound of water, the heartening sound of birds singing and insects humming, the breeze caressing your face, the smell of rain on wet grass. There is no other restoration of mind, body and soul that quite matches this therapy. And I found it here in Gods Garden on the cliff face of Esiweni Lodge, overlooking the expansive plains of Africa and the large cliff drop plunging down to the rushing river below. A birds view of Africa. It is not a wonder that Zulu, Boer and English fought so hard to claim this magical land. Simply put, it is a beautiful place and if one can just lie here next to the rim flow pool the senses start to melt in to one and you become hypnotized by the baking autumn sun on your body and the sounds of nature. Nambiti Big 5 Game Reserve is in the middle of the battlefields (Boer, Zulu and English wars) and is an intoxicating combination for any traveller wanting to experience the ghosts of South Africas past and the wonderful African wildlife. It all happens here, from Esiweni Lodge!

We arrived at Nambiti Game Reserve on a wet, overcast, cooler autumn day in April. The roads to the entrance of the reserve were muddy and rather adventurous to travel on with a small sedan, but the lovely cosmos lined road made up for the slip sliding. Our first welcoming sight was of a serval (wild cat), who was hunting. Nartie (our ranger who collected us from the parking lot) mentioned that she is very thin and quite possibly with cubs. She was absolutely gorgeous, spotted and totally camouflaged when she disappeared in to the long grass (the grass was still very long from the summer rains, but the landscape will change drastically with the coming of winter and the grass will soon die off).

Our hosts Magda, Nartie, Cindy and Lindo were incredibly attentive and they were eager to please. The lodge itself is a lovely mix of African colonialism and modern safari. The classic decor and smooth polished concrete floors with Nguni cow hides and African weave rugs, mixed with the rustic exposed wooden beams, stone walls and thatch roof, give it a homely, warm, intimate feel. It is a cosy lodge of only 5 individual rooms and makes for a very romantic affair. The quaint wine cellar is a definite for those honeymooners wanting to have a special evening, tucked away in this sumptuous place for a hideaway retreat.

We were showed to the honeymoon suite which is understated luxury and was a very comfortable room with a private deck with outdoor Chaise Lounges to lie on, to appreciate the amazing view. There was also an outside Victorian Bath, which could make for a very romantic, hot summer evening of bubbles and bubbley for two, to enjoy!

Dinner was a wonderful ambience of a beautifully set candle lit table, and a roaring fire. The starter of smoked salmon trout and cream cheese was delicious and the main of fillet of beef with roasted Julienne vegtables and a mushroom cheese sauce, was sumptuous. The homemade heart shaped melba pudding was a sweet end to the evening. There is an element of homeyness to the lodge, an unstuffy disposition, which I thoroughly enjoyed, a home away from home atmosphere. The quality of the food was very good and it kept on coming, which left me decidedly heavier than when I arrived.

We slept well and the next morning we were up early to go on our morning game drive. The lodge was covered in a thick blanket of mist and one could not see the landscape below the cliff face. We dressed warmly (always layer for game drives because it can get freezing on the back of the vehicles and then warms up as the day progresses) and made our way to the dining area of the lodge where hot chocolate, tea and coffee were served with some snacks.
And then we were on our way!

The mist was heavy and thick and bore down on us and then in an instant the sun appeared and the mist burnt off and the reserve was revealed to us. A stunning landscape of mountainous backdrops and wide open African plains, with the glistening of sun on the long wet grass, it was a jewel to treasure like no other.
We saw many animals whilst here, Giraffe, Zebra, Warthog, Impala, Nyala, Water Buck, Gemsbok, Buffalo, Rhino (although from too far away). The reserve is rich in exquisite bird life, but the highlight would have to be the lioness 4 metres from our truck, eating her Kudu kill!

This reserve is 10 000 hectares of amazing shades, layers, textures, colours and light. It is an incredibly picturesque place and it is a malaria free reserve. The custodians of the land are the local community surrounding the reserve. The private lodges lease this land from the community and they offer employment to the people. Thus poaching is not as prevalent, as the land belongs to the people. Staying at Esiweni Lodge means giving something back! This was a wonderful experience and I definitely hope to visit the Lodge and reserve again some day. Sadly our stay was too short and a battlefields tour was not to be. This is it the day has finally arrived and I am in Joburg/Jozi/Egoli/Gauteng/City of Gold to see the greatest anthem group that has ever lived, U2, icons of their time!

Sunday morning we were picked up by a friend and we made our way to Rosebank to Doppios a modern Italian type restaurant which is one of many on the Rosebank Trattoria beat. The mood was relaxed and casual as everyone was out with their families enjoying the Sunday weather and there was a choice of restaurants all spilling out on to the courtyard. Breakfast was pleasant, I had scrambled, bacon on croissant and my two friends had the hearty filled omelettes. Eventually breakfast came to an end and we were dropped off at the Strathavon Hotel. We stayed in Sandton so that we would be close to the Park Town Station where we would embark on our exciting journey to the world class Soccer City Stadium in Soweto fit only for a world class band. We ate at the Newscafe Restaurant, which is in the Jhb Theatre complex, but unfortunately none of our party particularly enjoyed their meals, but to be fair the complementary greek salad was very fresh and I enjoyed that. At about five pm we parked near the Theatre and walked in Johannesburg downtown to the station. The traffic was thick and there was ordered chaos as people frantically tried to find their parking place so that they might catch the park and rides or the train to their destination.

The train station was large and spacious and noisy and busy, as one would expect a train station to be. People were gathered at the little shops watching soccer on television through the shop windows, every where there was excitement in the air and one can only imagine what the world cup travellers experienced on their way to Soccer City to watch their favourite world cup teams.

When we eventually passed through the main terminal and down to the platforms, which are underground, I decided that perhaps I would not like to do this on an ordinary day, as the platforms are dimly lit and I am not sure what the security would be like on a less important occasion. However on this day the trains arrived timeously and people boarded with minimal fuss. However once in the train and the doors closed I had a major panic attack as there was very little air and the windows were small and did not open too widely. Once the train started going and I could see light of day, I felt a little better and arrived unscathed, albeit rather dishevelled.

The first glimpse of the stadium and you realize just how awesome it is. This large, overbearing, larger than life Calabash with it's brightly checkered African tones and large expansive spaces surrounding it. The mood was festive and the people, largely middle aged paying tribute to a band that has transcended time and only a band of this calibre could attract a 100,000,00 army of fans, all of whom have grown up with them.

The stadiums atmosphere was electrifying, the mood intense and the people anxious with anticipation and finally U2 nonchalantly strolled on to the stage and the people yelled in elation. Star struck and completely in awe, the emotions swelled up in us all and then the introductions were over and Bono's raspy, velvety, unmistakable, lamenting voice yelled out in to the hot summer night and The Edges eery guitar repertoires sent shivers down my spine as Sunday Bloody Sunday, I will Follow, One, Mysterious Ways, Where The Streets have no Name, Pride and so many more were belted out one after the other.

Nothing can prepare you for a concert as outstanding as this one. The atmosphere was transcendental and the people elated. The lighting, the sets, the messages from icons of our time and country, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tu Tu etc. This tour highlighted many a plight of the people of third world regimes and gives them a voice where no voice can be heard. An amazing band and an amazing concert and one I will never forget. The red seat tickets that we were seated in were donated to HIV Aids medicine. This is what it is all about to give is to receive, it is what makes us human and no one understands this better than U2.

And eventually it was all over and the lights went up and the crowds dissipated and the experience is forever etched in our memories as our exhausted, sapped bodies made their way to the train station. The first train to Jhb was full and the second train filled up fast, but we were fortunate enough to catch a ride in the cockpit, and I drove the train all the way to Park town, albeit backwards! A memorable journey, an 'Unforgettable Fire!' The trip back up the hill from the station left us feeling vulnerable as the crowds thinned. Many of the car guards were drunk and we almost found ourselves caught in an altercation between them. This is not something you would do on an ordinary night in downtown Joburg. Finally 2.30am we arrived back at our hotel and we were all ready for bed.

DURBAN TO JOHANNESBURG & MOLOKO STRATHAVON - SANDTON HOTEL STAY

My friends and I were on our way up to Johannesburg for the U2 360 degree world tour. We travelled from Durban to Johannesburg with ease, N2 freeway all the way. The trip took us just over 5 hours which was fairly good going. As we passed the Northern part of Kwazulu Natal evidence of The Mighty Drakensberg surrounded us as we ascended upon Van Reenens Pass with green on either side of us. The day was a beautiful warm hue with a crisp blue sky and puffy low bearing clouds.

Johannesburg or Jozi as it is endearingly referred to is the financial powerhouse of South Africa. It is the gold mining capital of Sa and along with this comes the wealth, decadence and corruption of a city. Densely populated and not necessarily a very attractive city, but a very exciting, energetic, vibrant, noisy, colourful African one at that. When you first arrive in Gauteng/Egoli (place of Gold) the first thing you see is the mines and the stark, dry barren landscapes of the highveld and then when you hit the more upmarket suburbs such as Sandton the large opulent buildings and expensive cars is what catches your attention and you know that you have arrived in Jozi, sin city.

We arrived at our accommodations in Sandton, Moloko Strathavon. My first impressions of Strathavon is that it is an understated, minimalistic, African contemporary, modern hotel. The entrance hall has large windows and double volume ceilings with large chandeliers spiraling down and filling up the space and the copper columns with the beautiful rich colour that reflects with the light and contrasts with the textures of the stone walls. Various wood finishes and porcelain tiles creates an exciting blend of earthiness and modern spaces. The large windows allow the indigenous landscapes in to the hotel and the play of textures, colours and shapes creates an easy flow from one room to the other. The various conversation pits with their bright African colours and comfortable, plush seating arrangements make for inviting zones within which to relax and read a newspaper or sip on a cocktail.

The hotel is mainly for the business class and therefore the weekend was very quiet. It felt like we had the hotel to ourselves, which I quite enjoyed. It was our very own retreat in the heart of Sandton, an upmarket, buzzing suburb in Johannesburg that has everything and anything at ones disposal, restaurants, gym, shopping centres etc.

We arrived at Strathavon on the Saturday afternoon to warm, welcoming smiles from the staff and we were checked in with minimal fuss and escorted to our rooms. My friend and I had a double room. The room was comfortable and the carpets felt very luxurious under my bare feet. The room had everything that one needed, a flat screen television with satellite tv, plug points, a business centre, wardrobes, airconditioning, an ensuite with bath and shower and a Juliet balcony that looked on to a pond & a beautiful indigenous forest garden.

We visited the spa but much to my disdain I ran out of time and could not make a visit to this tranquil, peaceful haven where I could just imagine myself rested on a bed with the soothing sounds of water as the therapist sent me in to lala land.

On the Saturday afternoon the weather was stifling and dry and hot and so my friend and I chilled at the pool and took in a very cool swim with our very own Indian Head Massage, as we immersed ourselves under the flowing waterfall. We spent some time here relaxing on the pool lounges, chatting and whiling away the time. It made for a very relaxing time after a long drive.

On our last day in Jozi we decided to have breakfast at the hotel. After a night of razzling with the boys from Ireland (U2) we were ready to take on a hearty breakfast. The buffet of fruit, various cheeses, cereals and joghurt looked very inviting and so we started with a side plate with some of these goodies. For our main breakfast I opted for the smoked salmon eggs benedict on an English Muffin and my friend had the Strathavon breakfast, which had the works. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals and when we were watered and fed we were ready for our journey home. The journey home was a bit taxing at first as going out of Jhb, Durban bound there is some major road works and it took us a good hour to get out of this jam, but once we were on the open road again we went at a leisurely pace. We stopped at Harrismith to fill the car and the ladies visited the powder room. The Harrismith filling station has a couplet of little restaurants, Mountain Lodge accommodation, play areas for the kids and is a wonderful, attractive, clean pit stop and one that I can highly recommend.

At last we arrived in Durban 5 pm. I love Jhb, albeit not for it's beauty, but rather for it's brash, loud disposition, overbearing, unashamed opulent attitude and although this was such a whistle stop tour and I never got to do the things that I wanted to do, I enjoyed my time there. THE JUNCTION NOTTINGHAM ROAD - KWAZULU NATAL MIDLANDS

After Christmas we took a road well travelled and visited The Kambrook Farm (friends farm) in the Kzn Midlands. My husband had injured himself on his surf board 2 days before Christmas and so his mobility was a tad restricted. Therefore a 6 day break at the farm was an ideal opportunity to kick back and relax the broken body. However with 6 days in The midlands, the walking wounded is not going to deter any lady from exploring the quaint artists retreats and craft shops in the area and due to some rainy days in between glorious sun kissed days we all piled in to the cars and headed to Nottingham Road to have lunch and visit our usual haunts. Unfortunately we are creatures of habit.

We had lunch at Blueberry Hill and my family opted for the generous sized pizzas that were really delicious, others in our party had the Baguette with avocado and bacon with rocket salad which was apparently equally delicious, muffins were limited due to the holidays but the cheese and onion muffin went down well. The famous Blueberry cheese cake was on the menu, but I was far too full to order it. Some of the brave in our party took some home for afternoon tea.

Our next stop was The Junction where the 'big' kids and little kids made there way to the Archery section. The little ones played with plastic bows and arrows, whilst the big kids had the real thing. Whilst the boys and kids were taken care of the woman meandered the quaint shops. I was here last at the beginning of spring and I was surprised at how many shops were closed and how dry the area was. The rains had not arrived and the whole of Kzn had had a particularly dry winter season.

However on this trip The Junction was filled with rose lined pathways and beautiful rich green lawns, where a wedding party decided to take a photo opportunity, the little place was abuzz with activity and I noticed that my favourite shop that was closed on my last trip was indeed open again and ready for me to enter in to it's world of wonderment.

The Fashion Fusion is a shop filled with exotic smells and colour explosions that make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Bathroom accessories, beautiful designer cosmetic and travel bags, exquisite Swarovski Crystal Designer Imported Jewellery, this is a shop purely for the ladies and is a tactile treat.

When the woman were finished meandering we found the kids at the candle dipping shop where they were delighting in dipping their candles in all sorts of exciting colours.

The little book shop kept some of our party amused and the ladies found themselves some good books in the bargain bin.

NGUNI COWS - KWAZULU NATAL

Nguni Cattle are thought to have originated with the Khoi people of the central lakes of Africa and introduced to Southern Africa when these people migrated South. They can be found anywhere where the Nguni tribes settled, namely Kwazulu Natal, Mozambique and Swaziland. They have become a highly sought after breed of beef and are now bred as such. These particular cows were seen in Nottingham Road, Kwazulu Natal Midlands and it is here that one can find the most magnificent Nguni paintings at Blueberry Hill in Nottingham Road.

THE JOURNEY TO ZULULAND & SIGHTS OF NORTHERN KWAZULU NATAL

We left Durban on a Friday in spring, late afternoon in peak hour traffic, heading north in land from the sea, but parallel to it, only every now and again the deep blue seeking us out as it reared its head from in between the beautiful, undulating green hills of Kwazulu.

The African huts set against this green backdrop of sugar cane and bush, with Nguni and goats grazing on the roadside. This is My Africa, this is home. And as the journey grew longer so did the day until the light eventually faded and the evening cast its shadow. A long trek, we arrived in Jozini, Northern Kwazulu Natal in the pitch of night. What is normally a 4 hour drive became a 5 hour trip due to peak Friday traffic, 2 fender benders along the way and the grueling night driving.

The roads are freeway most of the way and they are in good condition, however one does need to take care of the livestock and African life that is going on around you. Zululand is big game country and as one drives further in to Zululand there is evidence of the many lodges that are scattered across this land of old, where Great Zulu Kings once roamed and hunted. The area has returned to its former glory of greens and deep blues, the rivers are full and meandering and seems to have recovered from the harsh winter drought period.
