Off On Holidays -Cruising New Zealand

Being back at work and with the fast approaching holiday seasons I havent managed to do much sewing or blogging and it doesnt look like my free time is going to improve in the next few weeks.

We have a week left of school, then we will be off seeing friends and family for the Christmas period and then off on our annual New Years Eve cruise for 14 dyas of pampering and being spoilt

I will be back blogging mid January with pics from our cruise on the Diamond Princess and new projects.

I'm looking forward to finding the quilt shops in our New Zealand ports: Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Akaroa, Dunedin as well as Hobart & Melbourne.

I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas

and if you do not celebrate Christmas

have a Happy Holiday Season

may the new year

Back in My Sewing Room

Its been a hard week getting walking again but worth it , so I have been concentrating on that & I haven’t done much sewing this week.
However, I have moved all my stuff out of the lounge room and I’m back in my sewing room.
Now waiting for me was a few alterations & some mending to be done before I can play in there again.

DS left his split trousers to be fixed -
A pair of brand new undies worn once, DH pulled thread on & elastic came away, needed stitching back on -
Purchased online some new summer tops that need a few adjustments

Purple stretch top with beautiful non stretch lace around hem…..cant sit down in it. Some designers just don’t think.

Solution: put splits in sides.

2. Purchased & T-Shirt which was described as aqua in colour but what arrived its more aqua mint…I don’t really wear green well.
Solution: Purple purple buttons on it seen purple is a favourite colour. I really like this solution

3. Purchase a dress which look terrible on me… way too big across shoulders. Solution: pleats in the shoulder, cut of and make into a long length top, take in at side seams to give it more shape.

Update on my foot: Had the stitches out 3 days ago...now learning to walk again on a numb foot after nerves where affect..its a very slow process...the nerve sensation in my foot will return slowly the surgeon said... and is saying operation was successful, but its hard to believe when you can not feel anything with your foot. So am off work a little longer than first thought....looking at this positively I can do some more sewing..:-)

I'm so over this now !!!!!!!

I've had some interesting days just sitting.

I've cuddle my pussy cats; Misty & PC

I've cuddled the new puppy; Sugar

I've started a few sewing projects

I've read lots online

I've blogged

I've taken photos & videos

I've watched a lot of TV & movies

I've done some shopping online

which brings me to what happened last night.

Australia doesn't do Halloween like the USA

but retailers have been pushing it over the last few years to get us involved.

So let me set the scene

Me in my chair, foot up

DS & His GF & DH all in our lounge room

its just on dusk

there is a knock on our front door, & another knock & another knock

DH says I'm not getting it, DS says its trick or treaters

still another knock getting louder

then quiet as we all ignore the knocks

then

we hear a car door slam

we start talking about how the kids are getting driven around by their parents to get treats

I ask can you please check ..as I cant stuck in this chair

now this is where it gets funny

Its not the trick or treaters but my local delivery man

Trying to give my a few parcels....ooops my online shopping deliveries while my DH is here

DH says what have you been buying now......

DS opens door to delivery man & apologises

saying we thought he was trick & treating

lucky he is a lovely man & just laughs....

he is running really late, he has never delivered this late, only at Christmas

DS brings me the package the very large package....

Well looks like I got the treats

New Addition to our Family

Day 11 of sitting with my foot elevated

I’ve got a little side-tracked over the past few days.
Foot is coming along well but I have only got a few flowers done

This is why I have been side-tracked

She is our new addition to the family

My DS 22 brought home a new puppy

she is a long haired miniature Dachshund

the cutest thing you have ever seen

Born 1 August so she is 13 weeks old

Weighs 1.7 kilos and is 20 cm long

she is so tiny and so cute & the sweetest nature

He called her Sugar

so I have been having lots of Sugar cuddles

trying to teach her

cleaning up after her

Hexagon Challenges & Decisions

Day 5

Sitting with my foot up

I am feeling very excited about this project.

As I rummaged through my stash of fabrics I had forgot about just how many fat quarters of fabric I had with sewing themes on them.

Now that I have cut my hexagons and I even fussy cut a few…. .the go cutter makes this process so easy….

ahhh I do love my Accuquilt GO

I need to decided about a design that will also suit my situation of sitting.

Design Brief…. make something fun to show my love of sewing using my sewing themed fabrics.

Limitations: Must be able to complete sitting and with hand stitching, with limited access to my gadgets & supplies in my sewing room. ( I do not want to risk sending DH into my girl cave to many times)

What can you do with a hexagon??????

After doing some researching on the net…(yes laptop is close at hand), I found several designs.

Tiled Hexagon arrangement – where hexagons are just stitched in rows to create a pattern.

this design is very achievable with fabrics I have, I can just mix them up & sew, row after row. and would give a scrappy look.

A Charm hexagon quilt – where every hexagon is a different fabric stitched in rows.

this design I could achieve with the amount of different fabrics I have however, I will only using one hexagon of fabric and I want to display more of each fabric in the quilt

A grandmothers flower garden- where the hexagons are arranged into a flower shape then join together to create a second pattern. The flowers can be 2 rows big or 3 rows or 4 rows depending on final design.

this design shape is still my favourite but I think I will add a Kimzeee twist to it.

And the Winner is......

Fabrics have been sorted into light & dark backgrounds

Most of my hexagons I have cut at least 6 hexagons of each fabric and i can cut more if needed.

so let the party & fun begin

as I describe what he is looking for & where I left it last.

2 Marking pen – Pilot Frixion Pen, disappears with heat, a purple & a pink ( lucky they are my favourite colours)
1/4” clear plastic ruler – this is so handy
sandpaper board- this has fine sandpaper glued to a board that is perfect for marking as it grips the fabric

with a few yelling matches back & forward …

now comes the fun bits

arranging fabrics to create a flower shape

I am creating the flowers by using a light coloured center & dark petals or a dark center and light petals.

I lay them out on my board to decide arrangement

PC is keeping me company

join together the hexagons,

using a small running stitch,

from intersection of each corner to corner,

joining each piece to center piece until you have a completed flower

Hexagon Sewing Theme Quilt Project

4 days ago I had a foot operation, 3 days on pain pills & sitting with foot elevated has lead me to a new project, so I don't go completely nutty over the next 2 weeks, with sitting & healing, I needed a new project !!!!!!!

Now what can I do ?

I have nothing prepared for hand stitching, every project I have is machine stitching.
I have my Accuquilt Go cutter… now can I use this sitting in a chair with my foot elevated….????
I think I can if I just get DH to bring out my portable sewing table I got when I was 12.
This is very Dangerous sending DH into my girl cave, he might see all the stuff I really have…

Now what Accuquilt cutting die do I want…..???

What fabric do I want to use?????

I have been collecting fabric with a sewing theme for the past 6 years & I would love to do something with them.

Oh NOOOOOOOOOO

I have to send DH into my stash cupboard to get my container of sewing theme fabrics…

Do I dare send him to my stash cupboard…..
There is no other way to get it….
He returns with my very full container of fabrics…. with a smile…..pheeeeeeeeew

ok Go cutter organised, fabric selected…
Now what pattern can I do or want to do….

When I first started quilting and patchwork in my 20’s I made hundreds of 2” hexagons, cutting each shape individually, cutting all the paper templates & then stitching them into flower shapes but somewhere along the line when we moved houses they were thrown out as rubbish..grrrrrrrr and I haven't made one since.

But I did buy the hexagon die when I purchased my Accuquilt go cutter.
Looking at my stash of themed sewing fabrics I think the largest hexagon in the Accuquilt dies would be perfect for my project as it would show off the different fabrics designs.

I have used a black sharpie to outline die

Ok now can I cut these out sitting with my foot elevated..???

First I need to make strips wide enough to go over the 5”hexagon shape

Now normally I would cut the strips using a rotary cutter & mat but that isn't possible in this position so I roughly measure the fabric across shape and did the old fashion rip along the grain line.

While this is using more fabric this is all about achieving the end results and I have stacks of fabric

now this strip, allows me to fold it over 3 times, but I can cut up to 6 layers at once

I then placed my well used protective mat over fabric & position the die to go threw the cutter.

Winding the handle until it is all threw the Go cutter..easy sitting in the chair

Removing the cutting matt of fabric you can see the hexagon shape cut out.

Removing the outside excess fabric and stash in plastic bag for other projects…

and

I have 3 perfect hexagons, cut in 10 seconds that it took me to roll it threw the machine

and best of all, my foot is elevated & healing.

Now too roll, cut, roll, cut, the day away

I have sorted the hexagons into lights (creams, beiges and white) backgrounds

and dark backgrounds.

that's enough for one day

am feeling a little tired

but excited about this project.

a little foot surgery..now what to do....

Well what a week its been!!!!!!
I am currently recovering from foot surgery.
Which means for the next 2 weeks I have to hop on one leg to get anywhere and keep my foot elevated as much as possible so my surgery heals.

I have had a heal spur removed & a planta fascia release done after a year of pain & trying everything not to have surgery, but alas they didnt work so under the knife I went.
Hopefully ill be walking pain free in 2 weeks, or so.

So what to do over the next 2 weeks that lets me sit with my foot elevated.

I cant use sewing machine...

so will have to find some hand sewing to do.

Pencil Cases

I haven't have much spare time to sew on my projects over last few days with organising work stuff.
I did make a few pencil cases to inspire my class tomorrow.
They will be learning to sew with a machine and decorating fabric, to make & design their own pencil case.

Another Vintage Valentine block

As my holiday’s come to a finish

my focus must go back to preparing to go back to work,

I have completed another block .

6 blocks done & the centre block done…

now

lets see how they will look on the wall

its been fun getting them done

am happy with the results so far

I think the layout will have to be 4 across top row

With 2 underneath down each side of centre block.

Not sure I will fit more than that in.

maybe I’ll do the remaining 4 blocks that should go underneath

in a separate frame to go either side.

Vintage Valentine Centre Medallion

I am relatively new to quilting and patchwork but I have been sewing since I was 12

mainly clothing with the odd furnishing thrown in.

So when the opportunity became available for me to sew for fun,

my wonderful sister got me involved in quilting and patchwork.

I have always admired her wonderful quilts over the walls and throughout her home

but never had the money or the time to indulge in a hobby.

So over the past few years I slowly set up my new sewing room

with new machines, equipment and of course started my stash cupboard.

I have taken a few courses with various local designers,

read lots,

practiced at lot,

decided what I like

don't like.

But when I started on this wonderful journey I really wasn't sure what I wanted to sew,

I bought a lot of pre-package kits.

Each kit teaching me something new about this amazing craft,

introducing me to a new designers

and

often new shop owners.

However,

I have mistakenly assumed that these kits include what is on the pattern cover,

and

includes the fabrics displayed on its cover …

No No silly me to think the fabric would be the same.

Then the challenge begins for the beginner in this craft..

You have the pattern,

often supplied with a beautiful colour picture of what it will look like when finished

and

then you have the fabric that was supplied in the kit !!!!!!!!

When you first look at your kit you are all excited

the fabrics look great

and

then you start on the learning journey

of what fabric goes where..

what was the person thinking when they put this kit together….

what was this fabric swapped for???

It really is a mystery tour…

sometimes fun

sometimes so frustrating you give up,

put it away

and

start another project.

This is what has happened as I work my way through the Vintage Valentine kit.

Some fabrics are the same

very similar

but

some fabrics I have no idea what they were supplied for….

so into my stash I go..

finding others that will go with what I already have.

Having sorted 4 blocks in this quilt

I decided I should do the centre block

before I go too far

so I can get the look I’m after with the main fabrics.

This is the photo I have of the centre medallion sent with the kit

off I go trying to match this with fabrics supplied…..

cant find vase fabric…..

flowers fabric nope….

bird fabric nope…mmm

let the designer within come-out

and

create with what I have

Now, this is what I created,

I have looked at this on my wall for 24 hours

but it just didn't look right to me ..

so lucky I had only fused the pieces down.

the vase is wrong…..

this is what I have changed it to

so today it can stay on my wall,

as I play with the other blocks.

The colours with the fabrics that I have been sent are a lot dark than the original kit

but I am still loving the look.

This quilt is to go on my bedroom wall which is a dark burgundy in colour.

As I get a few more blocks done

I will audition them on my wall

as I will have to change the layout as well as

I have more width than depth in the space I want to show it on,

not a square space….

I will have to get creative when piecing them together.

Vanilla Slice

This is a quick easy vanilla slice made with Arnott's SAO biscuits instead of pastry.

Ingredients
1 Packet of Sao biscuits
1 Litre milk
¾ cup sugar
30 g butter
½ cup cornflour
4 heaped tablespoons custard powder
1 egg
1 dessertspoon of vanilla

Method
· Place a layer of Sao biscuits into base of a square tin

· Place milk, sugar, butter in saucepan
· Blend cornflour and custard power with the milk until dissolved then add to saucepan
· Bring to boil stirring until smooth & thick
· Remove from heat
· Beat in egg and vanilla
· While custard is still hot pour over bottom layer of biscuits

then top custard with a second layer of sao biscuits pressing each biscuit into custard.

· Refrigerate until cool
· Then ice with favourite icing.

We like it with passionfruit icing ( 1 cup icing sugar & 2-3 passionfruits)
but
if passionfruits aren't available,
pink icing with coconut is also nice.

· Refrigerate again until icing set then cut into squares
