DAVID WISEHART: Tell us about your book.

RUTH FRANCISCO: My LA friends have been wondering what I’ve been doing in Florida for the past few years. Well, I’ve been writing a book, which portrays the Florida Panhandle with all of its splendiferous beauty, and equally splendiferous political corruption. If you like Carl Hiaasen, I think you’ll enjoy it.

Three sheets to the wind, Sheriff Bill Crocker drives home late at night on a country road, swerving into a woman and her young daughter, who sit in a parked car. He knows the law, he knows what’s right, but in a panic—a moment of supreme stupidity—he takes off into the dark.

When he gets home Crocker realizes how devastating a hit-and-run will be to his career. But he cannot begin to imagine the aftershocks that will ripple through his community. People lose jobs, marriages break down, children commit crimes, homes are lost, schools are disrupted—the community is ripped asunder. He does the worst thing he could possible do—he tries to cover it up.

Enter hotshot investigative reporter, Clive Johnson, an ivy-league educated African American, who finds Southern vestiges of racism and cronyism baffling. He begins to dig around, uncovering corruption, fraud, misuse of public office, and possibly murder.

DAVID WISEHART: What inspired you to write the book?

RUTH FRANCISCO: Like one of the characters in the book, Summer Dayes, I first drove across the country from LA to the Florida Panhandle in early October. A million monarch butterflies surrounded my car. The next morning I woke up to see herons and egrets diving for fish in the canal, and white squirrels jumping between the pine trees. I was in awe of all the wild life, and it felt like this is the way life should be. At one with the animals.

Then a local sheriff was charged with a hit-and-run, which turned the little community upside down.

So this is the basis of my novel, beauty and corruption, and a small community along the Gulf Coast trying to make sense of the world.

DAVID WISEHART: How long did it take to write the book?

RUTH FRANCISCO: About a year and a half. As I have done in the past, I first published a short story for The Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, which was published in May 2010. That gave me the confidence to make it into a novel. BTW, I suggest this technique to all writers—first write a short story, get the feel for the characters and place, and sell it. Then work on the novel. This creates a ready readership for your novel when it comes out—all those readers want to know WHAT HAPPENED.

DAVID WISEHART: Talk about the writing process. Did you have a writing routine? Did you do any research, and if so, what did that involve?

RUTH FRANCISCO: Usually I do several months of research for a book, develop a story, and start writing, turning out a first draft in four or five months. I set it aside for a while, then do extensive editing. But this book was so much about where I lived. So much of what I have experienced here has made its way into the book. So the book took longer than some because I first had to experience it before I could write about it. A lot of local color.

DAVID WISEHART: Who are your favorite writers? What are you influences?

RUTH FRANCISCO: Joyce Carol Oates, Ruth Rendell, Stephen King, Michael Connelly. I also think the films of Hitchcock have influenced me a great deal. I guess my tastes run to the dark side, but what I love more is to write characters who yearn for something greater than themselves. Characters who risk everything to discover who they are.

DAVID WISEHART: What do you hope your readers come away with after reading your book?

RUTH FRANCISCO: This is a fast-paced mystery/thriller, so I hope to entertain. But there is much to think about.

What is fascinating about this part of Florida is how close everyone feels to nature. It’s a huge part of their lives—from fishermen to retirees, to artists and conservationists, to worm grunters—you’ll have to read the book to learn about them. So, within the confines of a murder mystery, I wanted to show this almost Native American spirituality that pervades people’s lives here. Even the corrupt sheriff.

And I want the reader to fall in love with the Panhandle.

DAVID WISEHART: What is your background?

RUTH FRANCISCO: I worked in the film industry for many years in production, screenwriting, and promotion. My first book, Confessions of a Deathmaiden was published by Warner Books in 2003, followed by Good Morning, Darkness and The Secret Memoirs of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. After the wild success of my first Kindle novel Amsterdam 2012, I published three other novels, available exclusively on Kindle. It’s been a great ride.

About the Author:

Tracy’s story telling career began when she picked up a copy of LaVyrle Spencer’s Vows on a college beach trip. A journalism degree and a thousand romance novels later, she decided to try her hand at writing a southern version of the perfect love story. "Oh, heavens, Constable, is that a call for marriage in your world? I've never been kissed well enough to get me in front of a preacher." Covering her mouth with her hand, she gasped, "Must be some—what would you call it—mighty fine kissing to make people take vows."

"Well," he said, feeling a frown bunch his brow, "it could be good. That's not out of the realm of possibility."

"Prove it," she said around another burst of laughter. "Prove it, prove it, prove it."

He rubbed a hand across his chin, debating the wisdom of having any more wine. Had he actually thought he was in control of this situation? "I don't know. This all seems crazy to me. And it was my idea."

She gulped a breath and patted her chest. "My, from the fantastic entertainment I've witnessed in this town, I'm sure it does." Taking a step forward, she held out her hand, as if she were trying hard not to startle him. It was downright insulting. "Rightly, Constable, you asked me first. And I'm willing to go the distance to solve a disagreement."

"I bet you're always willing," Zach muttered, wondering if he'd lost his mind sitting in his backyard on a lovely twilight evening. Gambling with a woman who wouldn't back down if a tiger had her latched in its jaws.

"Are you willing?"

Through the shadows, he found her gleaming eyes, her slightly curved mouth. "No, it's too reckless. Too irresponsible."

"You're sounding like a father. Or a constable, Constable."

"I'm both, Miss Connor."

He watched her lips tilt and flow into a glorious smile. "Rory's in bed, safe and sound. Most of the town is in bed, safe and sound. And you're here, with a pragmatic woman who can take care of herself. Two adults and one magnificent challenge."

"More like a dare," he said and drained his glass.

She took a step closer, until her skirt brushed his knee. "Call it a dare if you like."

"No." His resolve slipped a notch when she crouched before him, the pleasing angles of her face flooding into view. She was much, much too tempting.

"I'll do it all. You don't have to participate. That should be enough to prove my case."

"I wasn't serious when I said that. I'm sure you're not, hell, frigid."

She leaned in, her hands sliding along the arms of the chair, her face fading out of view as it closed in on his. A scent, provocative and earthy, stole in with his stuttered breath. "You see, Constable, I'm always serious. And..."

He watched her moisten her lips, so near he could almost taste her.

"Close your eyes. I've heard that's the way it's done."
