Amazon Kindle Take-Apart [from Rapid Repair] – “RapidRepair has completed the new Amazon Kindle disassembly guide. With the slicing and dicing complete, you need only look down to see the internals of the new Kindle from Amazon…”

Kindle boot log [from Reversing Everything] – “So the Kindle has a console running. Lots of interesting info here…”

Hacking the Kindle part 1: getting the console [from Reversing Everything] – “From reading the sources published by Amazon, it was clear that Kindle has a console running at least during boot. And there was an unconnected port available from outside…”

Hacking the Kindle part 2: bootloader and firmware updates [from Reversing Everything] – “The Kindle uses Das U-Boot bootloader. To break into the interactive shell, just press any key right afer reset. ‘help’ gives a list of available commands…”

Hacking the Kindle part 3: root shell and runtime system [from Reversing Everything] – “After I downloaded and extracted the root fs image, I quickly ran the /etc/shadow file though John the Ripper. In a moment it displayed the root password: ‘fiona’ (which is the codename for the Kindle, by the way)….”

The Kindle 2 is now expected in the early first quarter of 2009.

The current Kindle is once again sold out and very likely not available new again from Amazon at all. The ship date from Amazon is 11 – 13 weeks. It is fair to speculate that date will match up with the early 1st quarter 2009 date for Kindle 2 and assume the current model will no longer be shipping new. This has caused used Kindle prices to rise once again. Currently, the best deal from the Amazon Marketplace is about $540 and I have observed some Ebay auctions ending right around the $500 price range.

If you must have a Kindle now, expect to pay about $500. If you can wait a couple of months, you’ll be much better off as you should be able to buy the new version at the usual, lower price. Of course, the price is not set in stone yet and there is no telling how many units will be available at launch. You could end up waiting even longer once again. My guess is that Amazon will be much better prepared with inventory for Kindle 2, but we have no data to back that up and you can’t assume this will be true based on the original Kindle launch.

I wasn’t sure about the big screen Kindle when I first mentioned it, but this use makes a lot of sense to me. Textbooks are bulky, heavy, and expensive. Carrying a full semester’s worth of books on one device would be an incredible benefit to any college student. Considering how costly most textbooks are, it doesn’t seem that it would be much of a stretch for students to justify the price of the Kindle (of course we don’t know the price of the larger model yet).
