First step : find a converter

if you have a Kindle, we suppose you have tried to go to amazon website to find a converter AZW to pdf. But, all softwares are for convert AZW in PDF !
So, you have to find yourself in search engines...
there's a lot of converter.. Mobipocket Creator is one such converter. it's a free software, and can output your pdf document in AZW format !
It's a windows program :
- Go to its website and download Mobipocket Creator (Publisher Edition)

Convert PDF to Azw

Install theMobipocket Creator. Open it.
To import your PDF for conversion, it's easy, select "Import From Existing File".
Of course, select PDF.
in "Settings now", select the Kindle format "Azw".
When it's ok for you, you can, start the conversion by clicking build.
When it's over, after a few seconds, click "ok" and it's finish. You can now use the new azw document !

Android Mag's Pallavi had one of the several announcements of the availability of Kingston's WiDrive a few days ago, but the Kindle Fire app was not available in the Amazon AppStore. It is now. I just downloaded it.

Pallavi writes:

The content can be retrieved via Wi-Drive’s built-in wireless signal; and you do not require cables or an internet connection to do so. What's more, three users can work on different file types simultaneously from a single Wi-Drive. '

THAT SHARING FEATURE
That would mean each could be accessing different movies, music or other data at the same time, without wires.

The product description for the Wi-Drive with Kindle Fire Support mentions that you can run other apps while using WiDrive features and that there are "enhanced photo features."
Also mentioned: "Additional Network Setting - select WiFi channel"

Update - The first, very helpful customer review there, by Steeler Nation "Peter", written from use with iDevices, explains that the unit provides its own WiFi network in which the Kindle Fire connects to the Wi-Drive, and two or three devices can access different or same media files on the drive at the same time, all streaming smoothly, per customer reviews of the use of Wi-Drive with the iPad and other Apple devices using this drive for add-on storage and Non-Internet streaming.

His caveats are that with two or more people using it at a time, constantly streaming, it runs for only 3 hours and then must be re-charged again and you cannot recharge this with the miniUSB adapter while using it. He doesn't say how long it lasts with one person using it. [End of Update]

I was exploring Miro, which is free but I was waiting until their support for Kindle Fire is ready, and it apparently is, for their main software "Miro," rather than for the more limited MiroVideoConverter (MVC) program which doesn't have all the features of Miro 4.04, which is a free, open source program by Participatory Culture Foundation for Win XP, Vista, Win 7.

UPDATE 3 - I received later information from Miro last night. The program "does batch processing of conversions," (depending on computer's CPU capability), and an additional feature is that when you connect your device, you can "just drag -n- drop and the file will be converted and placed on your device." They say they have an entire new set of features for device syncing coming with Miro 5.
Beth Sexton, a Kindle forum member writes that she used Miro to convert .avi to .mp4 and that it worked well but she also recommends that when installing it that you UNcheck the toolbar option and other extras unless you really want them.
She used VLC to convert .divx to .mp4 ...

UPDATE -- Video Converter tools
I've asked the knowledgeable Amazon Kindle Forum members what good, free or low-cost utilities they know of for converting videos to mp4 and have already received very good information from L. Leverton, Pineapple, and Tink-erbell in that forum thread.

So far, DVD Catalyst 4's full $9.95 version (vs free versio)n, stands out. L. says:

' It now has new Fire upgrades that do some amazing things. It can eliminate the gray bar and make it a full screen video among other things. I tried it again yesterday on the Liam Neeson Unknown movie. I stuck the dvd in the drive and selected kindle fire as the device and selected go. It was done in a matter of minutes and was great. '

L. also mentions seeing a new Movie Gallery app that was $2.00 ... so there's another possibility.

Visit that thread for any additional very useful input from the members there.

(Later) I've seen more recommendations and the fact that DVD Analyst has a rep for very good customer service. Apparently, their Movie Gallery 2.0 feature allows you to keep videos there for later streaming by you, which would be a good feature for non-Amazon videos you have. Amazon will store, free, up to 5 gigs of any of your non_Amazon video files but not stream them, and of course 5 gigs of videos don't go that far.

UPDATE 4: Highrider, in another forum thread, writes:

' It has a drop down menu to select the device you want the video formatted for. You can select the Kindle Fire from the list and then choose one of several quality formats. HandBrake - This is a free converter very useful for resizing segments when you run up against contraints such as the 4-gig file-size maximum on the FAT system (which is used by the KindleFire device), but users get only 5.5 gigs for user data on that anyway. It's a very good adjunct to your video converter toolbox but is not known as the easiest program to use otherwise.

KINDLE TOUCH SOFTWARE UPDATE VERSION 5.0.3 IS READY

Kindle Touch Software Update, V5.0.3 is available online, and downloadable at the link, in case the update isn't already on your Kindle Touch and you decide you want it right away.

I received an alert on the update by eagle-eyed Randall Leverette.

My Kindle Touch is still at v5.0.0 and the 'Update your Kindle" button is grayed out. So I'll be updating instead of waiting, although the latter will be easier for most. As with the Kindle Fire update, I don't think they'll take their time on sending this one to the devices.

I recommend that most wait for it to happen unless they need to have it now and haven't been updated yet. See further below on that.

As mentioned, here's the actual software update page for the Kindle Touch update v5.0.3 rather than have you choose from several possible ones on the general page. They have been sending these types of updates out pretty quickly when they happen.

On the Kindle forums, some have reported sporadic freezes on the Kindle Touch.

The reason given by Amazon for the update:
"This update features general software improvements for Kindle Touch."

Amazon's directions on the software update page:

Determine your software version: From Home, tap "Menu," and then tap "Settings." On the Settings screen tap "Menu" and select "Device Info." If you see "Firmware Version: Kindle 5.0.3" you're running the latest software. If you see a prior version, proceed with the following steps to update your Kindle Touch to the latest software.

Download your software: Click on the link below to download the software update file directly to your computer:

At THIS point go to Amazon's page to get the actual file, linked under this #2 point. and follow the rest of the directions there. It's pretty straightforward. But it's important to follow EACH step completely to avoid problems.

Important things to remember:
. This uses your USB cable as you'd be opting to do this transfer manually.
. Don't drop the file into one of the Kindle folders. Put it at the top.
. Make sure the transfer is complete before you disconnect.
. Then 'safely disconnect' (depends on your computer) the Kindle.
. Disconnect the USB cable from both your Kindle Touch and your computer.

After you're finished with that, follow Step #5 to start the Kindle up using the new updated software.

The software update will automatically download in the background and will be applied once download is complete and the device is asleep.

I recently read the novel "The Pillars of the Earth" and discovered a new trick - on the Kindle, Amazon's digital book reader.

It's something entirely basic and simple in the digital world, but readers have had no easy way to do this, to date, with print-based works. Any e-book reader worth its salt should be able to do it.
"Pillars," if you don't know it, is a huge bestseller from Ken Follett, who otherwise is known for adventure novels - "Code Zero" and that sort of thing. This book is set in 12th century England and involves the building of a Gothic cathedral. The paperback was making the rounds in my office, and I had just bought the Kindle and thought I'd try it out.
And the book - well, I'll say it's a fun story, and the characters are vividly drawn. Fine literature it is not, but that's not what Follett is promising, so fair enough.
On the other hand, with all respect to Mr. Follett, where was the editor who smooths out the text? I empathize with Follett, filling up 400,000 words - you're bound to tap out a cliche or a bad metaphor here or there - and that's why one needs an editor. I couldn't detect one in this book.
The phrase that got me was like a stone in my shoe - noticeable at first, then irritating, then prompting outbursts.
It was "his heart in his mouth."
This is how Follett described a character who was nervous or anxious or frightened. It's not the most refined metaphor to begin with, but there it was - and then a few pages later, someone else's heart was in his mouth - and then, next chapter, another heart in another mouth - and again - more hearts, more mouths - until I finally finished the book and thought, just how many times did Follett use that ONE metaphor in a single book?
Which brings me back to the Kindle.
Digital technology changes the experience of reading books. What might otherwise have taken hours, to scour the text for an irritating phrase, now takes just a few seconds.
And the answer is: 13. Actually 17, if you count the four instances of "her heart in her mouth." (It seems that men are, on the whole, a lot hungrier for coronary snacks.)

I don't mean to pick on Ken Follett - he wrote a fun book that's obviously very popular. My point is that the Kindle makes it harder for authors to get away with using a crutch.

A few years ago, before the Kindle, I read a Pulitzer-prize-winning book that had a cliche - the SAME cliche - on almost every other page. I'd reveal it, but I can't yet do the trick to prove my point; it's not digitized for the Kindle. (Yet.)

13. Get numbers without pressing Sym

Using your PC, create a folder called "pictures" in the root folder and then create a subfolder within it. Stick some jpegs in there, unplug it and press Alt-Z from the home screen to rescan. You should now see the subfolder you created; click on it to launch the Image Viewer and browse images like it's 1864. Q and W zoom in and out, E resets the zoom, C returns to actual size and R rotates. F puts the viewer into full screen mode.
15. Boost the battery
Turn off Wi-Fi and especially 3G if you don't need them to boost battery life. E-ink runs forever on battery power: it's the wireless radio that really drains things.

16. Fast Forward
Pressing Alt and the right arrow fast-forwards through your book one chapter at a time.
17. Convert your documents
Kindles accept a range of file types - unprotected Word (Docx files are in the experimental category and may be flaky), PDF, HTML, TXT, RTF, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP and MOBI files - but if you want your PDFs converted to native Kindle format so you can take advantage of text-to-speech, annotation and other handy things, email the PDF to your Kindle email address with Convert in the subject line.
18. Tell the time
If you press the Menu button while reading a document, the current time will appear in the centre of the status bar.
19. Use Calibre to save cash
The excellent - and free - Calibre ebook manager can automatically download news from sites or RSS feeds and turn them into an ebook that you can then transfer to your Kindle.
20. Play your music
Another one from the Experimental menu: MP3 playback. If you drag MP3s from your PC or Mac to your Kindle's Music folder, you can play them through the Kindle's little speaker. Volume controls are on the bottom edge of the device, Alt-Space starts and stops playback and Alt-F skips to the next file.
21. Add annotations and bookmarks
When you see something interesting, press Menu and then either Add a Bookmark or Add a Note or Highlight. The latter option then enables you to highlight a block of text with the arrow keys or to add an annotation by typing on the keyboard. In future, clicking on Menu and View Notes & Marks gives you a clickable list of your bookmarks, highlights and annotations.
22. Stop other KIndle users annoying you
Kindles can be social, and as you read a book they can display bits that other Kindle users have highlighted and commented on. If this drives you crazy, you can disable it in Home > Menu > Settings > Popular Highlights.
23. Get your Kindle to automatically turn the pages
Can't be bothered pressing the next page button? Trigger the text-to-speech function and then turn the volume down until you can't hear anything. Pages will now turn automatically... eventually.
24. Install it on everything
Kindle apps are available for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, iPad, Windows Phone, Mac and PC and can follow you from device to device, so you can read something on your phone when you're on the bus and pick up where you left off when you pick up your Kindle and slump on the sofa.

25. Search Wikipedia
When you move the cursor to a word and the definition pops up, you can find out even more. Amazon's third generation Kindle is an extraordinary bit of kit whose users genuinely love it - but the chances are you'd love it even more if you knew some of the better tricks it's got up its sleeve. From hidden games to reading books aloud, your Kindle is capable of all kinds of clever things. These are our favourites.
1. Get online
The Kindle has a web browser: from the home screen press Menu > Experimental > Launch Browser. It's slow and horrible compared to a desktop or tablet browser, but it's perfectly adequate for browsing news sites, Wikipedia, Amazon and so on.

2. Play Minesweeper or GoMoku
Amazon has hidden a copy of Minesweeper in your Kindle, and you can launch it by pressing Alt, Shift and M simultaneously. Use the arrow keys to navigate and the select button to mark a mine, and when you get fed up press G to play GoMoku, a version of Tic-Tac-Toe.
3. Get driving directions
If you bookmark maps.google.com/m/directions in your Kindle's web browser, you can use it to get travel directions if you ever get lost. This is particularly useful in the 3G model, which can get online anywhere there's a 3G mobile phone signal. Your Kindle can display Google Maps too, but the text-only version is faster to use.

4. Email things to it
Each Kindle has a unique email address, and you can email compatible documents to your one by sending them to your Kindle. If you can't remember what it is, log into Amazon.co.uk and go to Your Account > Manage Your Kindle (or on your Kindle's home screen press Menu > Settings > Experimental). Amazon's site also enables you to create a list of approved emails: messages from addresses you haven't approved will be ignored.
5. Refresh the screen
From time to time your Kindle's screen may become corrupted. Not to worry: a swift Alt-G refreshes the display. If that doesn't work, sliding the power switch to the right and keeping it there until the screen goes completely blank turns your Kindle off completely.
6. Send the Web to your Kindle
If you sign up for the free Instapaper service and install the bookmarklet in your browser, you can send any web page to Instapaper so that you can read it later - and if you give Instapaper your Kindle's email address, you can automatically receive a daily digest of the articles. Download it over Wi-Fi, though: 3G downloads cost 20p per MB.
7. Don't pay for document emails
Your Kindle actually has two email addresses: username@kindle.com, and username@free.kindle.com. If you've got a 3G model and you're emailing documents to it, use the free.kindle.com address: Amazon won't try to deliver those messages via 3G, which would cost you money.
8. Read RSS feeds
Google Reader works in your Kindle browser. For best results log in, click on All Items and then press F to enter Full Screen mode. You can now move between articles by pressing J and K.
9. Check your email
If Google Reader and Google Maps work, then surely Google Mail works too? Yep - and so does Hotmail, and Facebook. In each case you'll need the mobile versions: mail.live.com/md for Hotmail/Windows Live Mail, m.facebook.com for Facebook and m.gmail.com for Google Mail.
10. Make your Kindle talk
If the publisher hasn't disabled it, you can get your Kindle to read your book aloud by pressing the Text menu button (the one with the upper and lower case letter A on it) and selecting Text-to-Speech: Turn On. Shift-Sym then starts and stops the reading feature and the space bar pauses and resumes.
11. Look up big words
Not sure what something means? Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to it and a dictionary definition pops up.

12. Take a screenshot
Another easy keyboard shortcut: Alt-Shift-G takes a screenshot and stores it as a GIF file in the Documents folder.

In the last three months of 2010, Amazon announced that in the United States, their e-book sales had surpassed sales of paperback books for the first time.^[7]

Kindle Review – Kindle Is For Girls?

Is the Kindle just for girls? An interesting study on the sales of the Kindle just came out, showing that women are about 63% more likely buy a Kindle than men! As a male who owns and loves a Kindle, I found this interesting and a bit unusual!
It should be noted, this same study revealed the trend that we have discussed for a while – that e-reader sales are up and continue to go up despite a poor economy. That means that both men and women both are using the Kindle more often these days, which is good news for the industry.
At any rate, I found it unusual to hear that the Kindle has so many more female users. I know that the demographic of this site is heavily female, so I guess I could have inferred it, but what is causing this gender discrepancy?

I think there are a couple of things that might be at work here -
1. It is more acceptable for women to walk around with a book to read to restaurants, public places, etc. People do not expect men to do the same, right or wrong. I also wonder if men are less comfortable carrying a Kindle around in public compared to women in general. If so, this might be keeping some men from making a purchase.
2. In our culture, other studies have shown that men read less than women overall. A recent study showed that women are 80% of the audience for fiction books, and yet another study showed that women read three times as many books in a lifetime than men do overall.
Now, those are just complete guesses on my part. I would have thought that men’s overall penchant for gadgets in our culture would have trumped the fact that less men read and would have made the numbers a little more even. The same study did show that more men have iPads than women, which would support that idea, but still, the numbers here are overwhelming!
