Far more than a promotional gimmick, Free is a business strategy that may well be essential to a company's survival.

The costs associated with the growing online economy are trending toward zero at an incredible rate. Never in the course of human history have the primary inputs to an industrial economy fallen in price so fast and for so long. Just think that in 1961, a single transistor cost 10 dollars; now Intel's latest chip has two billion transistors and sells for 300 dollars (or 0.000015 cents per transistor--effectively too cheap to price).

The traditional economics of scarcity just don't apply to bandwidth, processing power, and hard-drive storage.Yet this is just one engine behind the new Free, a reality that goes beyond a marketing gimmick or a cross-subsidy. Anderson also points to the growth of the reputation economy' explains different models for unleashing the power of Free; and shows how to compete when your competitors are giving away what you're trying to sell. To drive his this all home, Free is free to download until July 22nd.

The device was seen on display at the Digital Publishing Fair 2009, an exhibition taking place from July 9 to 12, 2009, at Tokyo Big Sight.

Here is what the article had to say:

"The e-book reader was exhibited at the booth of Founder International Inc, which is the Japanese unit of Peking University Founder Group Corp, a major IT firm in China, and drawing attention from visitors.

"Peking University Founder Group independently developed this terminal, and it has nothing to do with the Kindle," Founder International said. "

"E Ink Corp's electronic paper (e-paper) is used for the display, Founder International said. The company said that the size of the screen is "unclear." But I measured it and found that the size is probably 6 inches, which is the size of the E Ink's e-paper used in the Kindle 2.

Though the exhibited e-book reader is a prototype, it will be improved and released at the end of 2009 in China at a price of $209 to 210, Founder International said. By using a SIM card, contents can be directly downloaded to the terminal, it said. And within their cadence, personalities, conflicts, discoveries, ideas, and nations peal and fade. American history is no different. From the starving time of Jamestown during the Winter of 1609, through the bloody argument of the Civil War, and to today, the United States is a tale best told one day at a time.

In The American Patriot's Almanac, Dr. William J. Bennett distills the American drama into three hundred sixty-five entries--one for each day of the year. Boomtown is the home of Chang's Famous Fireworks factory, the Slush Olympics, the "Fighting Slugs" football team, rocket reindeer, and flying barber chairs. Boomtown is a humorous tall tale about a fictional town and its odd residents, written to capture the attention and inspire the imagination of intermediate readers. It's a fun read. However, underneath the humorous veneer, Boomtown asks and answers the question, "What does a healthy community look like?" The main characters struggle as they learn to trust their neighbors.

It is possible, but involves someone in the States helping you out. There are a lot of other ebook readers available now and with Google getting into the ebook game, it may not be necessary to get with Amazon to get the latest books. Below is a video from The Gadget Show which reviews three different ebook readers available in the UK. Keep in mind the video is a little old but the views of each reader are nice. There have been quite a few updates since this show including one on the BeBook, which now has added MobiPocket support. These ebook readers are also available for US users who are looking for something different.

Here is some more info:

BeBook:

The BeBook has .pdf support. If you are going to use this for a lot of .pdfs, check the forum on the website before buying. There was some of talk of having to do some reformatting to get the .pdfs to view correctly. This reader has the SD card slot which many Kindle 1 users missed when the Kindle was upgraded to version 2. BeBook also has links on their website to download 20,000 free books.

Site: mybebook.com

BEBOOK ereader $279.99
- Supported file formats: pdf, mobi, prc, epub, lit, txt, fb2, doc, html, rtf, djvu, wol, ppt, mbp, chm, bmp, jpg, png, gif, tif, rar, zip, mp3.
- 512MB internal memory, enough for at least 1,000 books
- SD memorycard slot included (extendable up to 4GB)
- Built-in menu language support: English, French, Spanish, German, Dutch, Chinese, Russian, Greek, Ukraine, Turkish, Japanese, Korean, Bulgarian, Estonian, Polish
- Change font type while reading
- Increase/decrease font size of ereader display
- Add bookmark to a page
- Zoom page
- Sort library by title, filename, size
- Play mp3 files and audiobooks

For more information on where to get the iRex outside of the US click here.

Cook III:

My book is titled Let's Talk Honestly: One Black Man's Thoughts. It is a collection of poems and essays inspired by my experiences as a soldier, community activist, time in politics, coach, husband, and father. And yes, they are inspired by my experiences as a black man living in the United States .

My hope is that by reading and sharing these poems many will see that while there are some serious issues in the Black Community that many African Americans want the same things many Americans do. Better schools, security, and yes, the American Dream.

Check out the book for just $1.50 here

The DX originally was sold out only two days after the mid-June ship date and was to be back in stock on June 17th. Right now the Kindle DX page is showing the device is sold out and will be shipping in 4 to 6 weeks.
This is from Amazon:

Availability: Due to heavy customer demand, Kindle DX is sold out. Please ORDER KINDLE NOW to reserve your place in line. We prioritize orders on a first come, first served basis. Note that Kindles cannot currently be sold or shipped to customers living outside of the U.S.

This really must be putting the crunch on parents who are waiting to see if the Kindle DX is something they should send to college with the kids for their textbooks. Others chimed in about how that was a bargain and that there were much more expensive book. So I had to take a look and here are some of the most expensive books you can buy for the Kindle. Believe it or not some of them are a bargain because you are still might be saving 20% or more off of the hardcover price. A lot of the top books are scientific books so if they have a lot of charts and graphs you probably will want to upgrade to a Kindle DX before you buy them. The one called “documents” contains all of your digital reading materials like books, newspapers, your “My Clippings file”, etc. The “Audible” directory is for your audiobooks, and “music” is for your MP3 files.

You can add Kindle-compatible files to these directories, and you can copy, move, or
delete the files that are already there. I checked the manuals and have not found support for subdirectories on the Kindle. I read that it might be coming in a future update because they are going to need it for the DX. We will keep you posted if we find out more.

Right now at least six colleges are running a pilot program to use the Kindle for not only textbooks, but as a PDF reader for other class handouts. For many people this can be a difficult decision because of the cost of the DX. It may also be a difficult decision since many students are already carrying a computer to class and may not want to also carry a Kindle.

If your student is really interested in getting their books electronically and not ready to purchase the Kindle DX, you may want to take a look at what is available from CourseSmart. CourseSmart offers textbooks your can read on your computer. You can save 50% on your class textbooks at coursesmart.com.

Here is some information from their website about the program:

CourseSmart provides a *rental* option for students with its subscription model for eTextbooks. eTextbook subscriptions have nice benefits to the student who is inclined to rent his or her textbooks.

The subscription covers the length of the course. CourseSmart eTextbooks each have a subscription length of 180, 360, or 540 days. The publisher sets the subscription length based on the number of terms that the course typically covers. For example, General Chemistry is often taught over 3 semesters so General Chemistry titles like Chemistry: The Central Science 10/E come with a 540 day subscription or a 3 term rental.

No need to worrying about damaging your printed book while you rent it. The worst part about leasing a car is worrying that you are going to scrape it up or drive over the miles and lose value at the end of the lease. Same goes for a textbook. Don’t highlight too much or spill coffee or you might be on the hook for some additional dollars. Not so with renting eTextbooks. Take notes, highlight, print and copy/paste all you want without running the risk of costing yourself more at the end of the term.

Always in stock and available immediately. Rental options don’t do a student much good unless they can find their assigned textbook available for rent. With an eTextbook, students will always find the title available.

I hope this helps for those of you looking for electronic textbooks.

It started with a post on the forum suggesting users meet up at a local Starbucks or other coffee shop with their Kindles. The word has spread through KindleBoards where it has been coined "National Kindle & Koffee meet-up " and there is even a link on the KindleBoards blog for a poster you can print out to spread the word.

The National Kindle & Koffee meet-up is set for 10 am on Saturday, June 6th. What a great way to find out what other Kindle users are reading or to get a peek at a Kindle before you buy one. So what if, on some dark, isolated road, Crazy #1 offered a ride to Nutcase #2? When two of the most twisted minds in the world of horror fiction face off, the result is SERIAL, a terrifying tale of hitchhiking gone terribly wrong. Like a deeply twisted version of an -After School Special,- SERIAL is the single most persuasive public service announcement on the hazards of free car rides. Beyond a thrilling piece of horrifying suspense, SERIAL is also a groundbreaking experiment in literary collaboration. Kilborn wrote the first part. Crouch wrote the second. And they wrote the third together over email in 100-word exchanges, not aware of each other-s opening section. All bets were off, and may the best psycho win.

Kiss of Midnight , part of the sexy vampire series,by Lara Adrian.

Product Description
He watches her from across the crowded dance club, a sensual black-haired stranger who stirs Gabrielle Maxwell’s deepest fantasies. But nothing about this night—or this man—is what it seems. For when Gabrielle witnesses a murder outside the club, reality shifts into something dark and deadly. In that shattering instant she is thrust into a realm she never knew existed—a realm where vampires stalk the shadows and a blood war is set to ignite.

Lucan Thorne despises the violence carried out by his lawless brethren. A vampire himself, Lucan is a Breed warrior, sworn to protect his kind—and the unwitting humans existing alongside them—from the mounting threat of the Rogues. Lucan cannot risk binding himself to a mortal woman, but when Gabrielle is targeted by his enemies, he has no choice but to bring her into the dark underworld he commands.

Here, in the arms of the Breed’s formidable leader, Gabrielle will confront an extraordinary destiny of danger, seduction, and the darkest pleasures of all. . . .

The Merchant of Death by D.J. MacHale.

Amazon.com Review
In Pendragon: The Merchant of Death, D.J. MacHale, the creator of several popular television series and Afterschool Specials, transplants the Pendragon name from Arthurian legend to modern-day junior high school. Fourteen- year-old Bobby Pendragon has it all; he's smart, popular, and a star basketball player in quiet Stony Brook, Connecticut. But a visit from Uncle Press soon topples all of that as Bobby learns that he is a Traveler, someone who can ride "flumes" through time and space. Bobby lands in Denduron, a medieval world where the gentle Milago are enslaved by the Bedoowan, and it's Bobby's job to free them. He reluctantly teams up with Loor--a girl his age from the warrior-territory of Zadaa--and other Travelers, recounting his adventures in journals that are magically transported back to his friends Mark and Courtney in Stony Brook. These first-person journals at times feel contrived--they're riddled with terms like "coolio" and "bizarro" and gnarly descriptions of vile sights and smells--but the book's thumping story soon scrubs away all such concern. The Merchant of Death keeps the pages flipping with steady action and near-constant mortal peril for its heroes, promising that both this and future volumes in the Pendragon series should be eagerly devoured. While Hobb's offering has a few too many illegitimate heirs backstabbing around, this is still a delightful take on the powers and politics behind the throne. Fitz, who is often called the "Boy" or the "Bastard," was begotten by good Prince Chivalry upon some "peasant" woman. At age six, he is given over to the safekeeping of the prince's man, Burrich. Fitz's impolitic existence causes the prince to abdicate his claim to the throne, and he and his wife leave the court, and the boy, behind. Fitz has inherited the "Skill," a mind-bending talent, and also has the ability to meld his thoughts with those of nonhuman creatures and to mentally "repel" physical advances. When Fitz finally comes to King Shrewd's attention, he is given over to the Royal Assassin's tutelage and trained to carry out the king's devious plans. The novel's conceit-that it offers Fitz's memoirs from childhood through adolescence-allows for several sequels. A gleaming debut in the crowded field of epic fantasies and Arthurian romances.
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I checked and it is available for the Kindle. The book, The Ride of a Lifetime: Doing Business the Orange County Choppers Way, highlights Paul's business sense that led to the amazing transformation of a small business into a household name. Paul Teutul, Sr. is the founder of Orange County Choppers, one of the world's premier builders of custom motorcycles. He formerly ran a family-owned steel fabrication shop before he began building custom bikes as a hobby, eventually founding Orange County Choppers in 1999. Since 2002, he and his business have been the subject of the hit TLC show American Chopper.

I annually visit near Orange County, NY to see family and it is amazing how well thought of the Teutal family is. Every year I hear stories of how the Teutul family participated in community events and how wonderful they are to their neighbors. On one trip I am pretty sure I saw Paul, Sr. riding past on a chopper.

There are a lot of people who barely used them and have upgraded to the Kindle DX or Kindle 2. I found one available today shipping directly from Amazon for $299 that says it is "Factory refurbished. Package factory sealed. All purchases eligible for Amazon customer service and 30 day return policy." Most of the used Kindle 1's are going for under $300. If you are a light reader or are not ready for the expense of the newer models, a Kindle 1 may be an option for you.

I have not found a lot of reviews on this item, but it seems pretty interesting. Here is the information from the Periscope webpage:

"Periscope® offers a single compact Kindle cover that also features a built-in retractable reading light, as well as notepad and pen holders. Ideal for reading at home or on the road, simply slip your Kindle into the custom designed holder, pull up the retractable, twin LED reading light, and begin reading in any low light environment — in bed, on a bus, train, or airplane, as well as in a car or conference room.

The Lighted Folio's built-in 5” x 8” notepad and pen holders makes it ideal for students and business users. I tried to put together a list of some of the important questions and answers so that you do not have to read all of the posts to find the answers you may be looking for. Here are some notes:

Kindle Font Sizes
Kindle provides a choice of six font sizes ranging from approximately 7pt to 20pt. Press the text key [Aa] when reading to see and change the font settings. Some pages, such as menus and the Kindle Store, cannot be adjusted.

Experimental Page Options on Kindle 2
Your Kindle 2 displays three options that are considered part of the experimental category: Basic Web, Play MP3, and Text-to-Speech. Only the first two options can be selected from within this screen. The Text-to-Speech listing provides a brief description of this feature which is accessed from within your downloaded content (using the Aa or Menu keys).

The Play MP3 feature will only be available after you've transferred DRM-free .mp3 files to your Kindle 2's "music" folder from a computer; the device does not come with any music loaded on it.

Kindle Book Locations
Kindle's screen can display only a certain amount of information at any given time. However, since the size of the text can be adjusted, the amount of information displayed is variable. Because of this, standard page numbers do not relate to the location numbers used by Kindle.

The first number is the first location displayed on the screen, and the second number is the last location displayed on the screen. As you change the font size, the second number will change to adjust to the new number of locations (characters) displayed. The first number will remain the same, because the first location displayed does not change.

The location displayed in a Kindle book is specific to the Kindle format, and does not directly translate to the page number of printed, or other electronic, versions of the same book.

Downloading Kindle Purchases and Subscriptions to Your Computer
If you aren't in a Whispernet coverage area, or if you simply want to back up your content to your computer, here's how you can download and transfer content:

Downloading from Manage Your Kindle
1. Visit the Manage Your Kindle page (www.amazon.com/manageyourkindle).
2. Books will appear in the "Your Orders and Individual Charges" section at the bottom of the page. Subscription content will appear in the "Your active Kindle subscriptions" section.
3. If you want to download a book, click on "Download/Send to..." next to the title and choose "Computer"
4. If you want to download a subscription, click the "+" arrow to the left of the subscription, then choose the edition you want to download from the drop-down menu, and then click "Download to computer"

Transferring to you Kindle
1. Connect Kindle to an available USB port on your computer using the USB cable.
2. When connected, Kindle will appear as a storage device on your computer.
3. Copy the files from your computer to the "documents" folder on Kindle.
4. Disconnect Kindle from your computer when the file transfer is complete.

Document Compatibility
Kindle recognizes text files(.txt) natively, and these don't require conversion to be read on Kindle.

Any personal files cannot have any Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection applied to be readable on your Kindle. The following file formats can be converted via e-mail and viewed on your Kindle: Microsoft Word (.DOC), Structured HTML (.HTML, .HTM), JPEG (.JPEG, .JPG), GIF (.GIF), PNG (.PNG), BMP (.BMP).

Due to the fixed layout inherent with the PDF format, some complex PDF files might not convert properly on your Kindle. If possible, copying the text of a PDF document to a Word document before converting can greatly increase the readability.

How many Kindles can be registered to one account?
Six. Please note that all the Kindles registered to the same account will be accessing that account holder's credit card information, so the account holder will receive all the charges for all new books, subscriptions, etc. that are purchased on that account.

How do you reset the Kindle 2?

Disconnect your Kindle from any power source, and then slide and hold the power switch for 15 seconds before releasing. It may take up to 30 seconds to reboot. It is not the same reset as Kindle 1. You can also try Menu->Settings->Menu->Restart.

I found one that said #wossybookclub, which lead me to @wossy. Jonathon Ross had posted the #wossybookclub inviting Twitter users to read a book along with him and discuss it via Twitter. I thought this was a pretty neat idea. What a great way to get some diverse view points on a book. Well the book he is reading is The Men Who Stare at Goats by Jon Ronson.

I checked and the book was not available in a Kindle edition yet. Here is the description on Amazon of the book.

Amazon.com Review
Just when you thought every possible conspiracy theory had been exhausted by The X-Files or The Da Vinci Code, along comes The Men Who Stare at Goats. The first line of the book is, "This is a true story." True or not, it is quite astonishing. Author Jon Ronson writes a column about family life for London's Guardian newspaper and has made several acclaimed documentaries. The Men Who Stare at Goats is his bizarre quest into "the most whacked-out corners of George W. Bush's War on Terror," as he puts it. Ronson is inspired when a man who claims to be a former U.S. military psychic spy tells the journalist he has been reactivated following the 9-11 attack. Ronson decides to investigate. His research leads him to the U.S. Army's strange forays into extra-sensory perception and telepathy, which apparently included efforts to kill barnyard animals with nothing more than thought. Ronson meets one ex-Army employee who claims to have killed a goat and his pet hamster by staring at them for prolonged periods of time. Like Ronson's original source, this man also says he has been reactivated for deployment to the Middle East.
Ronson's finely written book strikes a perfect balance between curiosity, incredulity, and humor. His characters are each more bizarre than the last, and Ronson does a wonderful job of depicting the colorful quirks they reveal in their often-comical meetings. Through a charming guile, he manages to elicit many strange and amazing revelations. Ronson meets a general who is frustrated in his frequent attempts to walk through walls. One source says the U.S. military has deployed psychic assassins to the Middle East to hunt down Al Qaeda suspects. Entertaining and disturbing. --Alex Roslin --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Usually what I do is just Google what I am looking for and add site:www.amazon.com in the Google search bar so it only searches Amazon.

I put together this simple Google search that only searches the Kindle Forum on Amazon. I am also adding it to the side bar of the eRead World home page.

Here is the code to add it to your site.
