A second, better Amazon Kindle tablet could land as early as the first quarter of next year.

That's according to to gadget site gdgt - the chaps behind reports that the Amazon Kindle Fire, the tablet that is expected to be unveiled in a matter of hours, would be more of a "stopgap" and, as a result, a "pretty poor" device.

Its report states that the Fire, which could be a PlayBook lookalike thanks to the involvement of ODM Quanta, has been delayed - throwing Amazon's release schedule into disarray; apparently the plan was never to launch two tablets in such a short time frame.

The second tablet is described as "the device Amazon really believes in".

The claims tie in with what was being reported back in May, just after Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, confirmed that the online retail giant was looking to get in on the tablet market.

Reports at the time circulated suggesting that Amazon had a quad-core tablet monster lined up, codenamed the Amazon Hollywood, packing an Nvidia Tegra 3 chip. This was to sit alongside a 7-inch Tegra 2 packing device, codenamed the Amazon Coyote.

There's nothing official and this is merely speculation at this point. But it wouldn't surprise us one bit to see Amazon take a bite at the tablet market initially with the Coyote, followed up by a blockbuster première in the way of the Hollywood next year.

Amazon is looking to launch a Kindle library - one that would allow ebook fans the chance to rent books rather than buying them, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

The move would apparently see older titles becoming available on a loan basis, for customers willing to pay a premium or sign up for Amazon Prime.

The move will obviously only be allowed to go forward should the retail-giant get publishers on board, and this could prove a stumbling block despite it apparently offering them "a substantial fee". The WSJ report suggests that "several publishing executives" aren't too keen on the plan as it would devalue the digital book form and strain other relationships.

We use the term "library" because that's how the report describes it, although the only books that you have to pay for at Pocket-lint's local library are from the special box that's kept in the broom cupboard. And they are only available on a Thursday when dodgy Steve is working, and we're not entirely convinced that these titles come under the jurisdiction of our county council.

The plan for Amazon makes sense though, as it moves into a more digital content space. With Amazon Prime in the US, users are already able to stream thousands of movies and TV shows. So a move to renting digital books makes perfect sense, especially as an ebook has no monetary or sentimental value once you've finished reading it. It's not as if you can put a finished ebook on a shelf, or in a bookcase.

Amazon apps

The home page also has tabs to jump straight to a newsstand, books, music, video, documents, apps or the web. Media links generally take you a bookshelf of your items, with cloud and device tags, and an arrow giving one-touch access to Amazon’s store, where you can purchase more stuff without any further sign-in.

The video experience is sure to be one of the Fire’s most popular features, and not just because the Fire comes with a month of Prime (Amazon’s £49/year free delivery service), including access to thousands of streaming videos. Buying a film or TV show is straightforward, with progress bars detailing progress for download and streams starting in a matter of seconds. Rentals are a generous 48 hours rather than Apple’s 24.

The Fire’s widescreen ratio means that Hollywood films are not actually that much smaller than super-letterboxed vids on the iPad, and speedy scrub and 10-second replay controls are a nice touch. Audio and video quality vary from stream to stream, of course, but generally we found them to be well encoded. However, there is no way to share content to a TV.

Sound and reading

The music player is a less exciting than videos, with a clunky transition from your library, to your cloud player, to the store, but sound quality through headphones (not supplied) was absolutely first class. It was also very easy to download cloud purchases to the device.

The Kindle app will not please bibliophiles. Not only is it essentially identical to the standard Android app, it lacks the much-touted X-ray feature to be found on the Kindle Touch and the swish page turn animations from the iPad.

If the Docs tab seems a little out of place on such a consumer-focused gadget, bear in mind this is a holdover from earlier Kindles, designed to give basic access to PDF, MOBI and text files. And it is just that – very basic.

Email, found under the Apps tab, is better. The app renders HTML messages extremely well and very quickly, there’s a fast search box, and good multiple mail move and delete options. The Android standard keyboard won’t excite anyone but it’s fast and offers to autocomplete spelling without any fuss.

Web and other apps

Amazon’s Silk browser was meant to offer cloud-accelerated smarts and near-instant downloads of popular websites. Don’t believe the hype. Browsing is much slower than the iPad, slower than the Samsung 8.9 and even slower than some 4G Android phones we've tested. Very busy sites also throw the Fire into a bit of tizzy, with pinch-to-zoom slowing or hanging momentarily.

The 7-inch screen is fine for browsing in landscape mode, but flip to portrait and pages start to look very cramped indeed. On the plus side, Flash elements loaded reliably and Flash games played OK, although not with the sleek liquidity of Samsung’s latest tablets.

Amazon’s dedicated market has around 10,000 apps. That sounds limiting but actually most of the big players are represented, and the company does offer a free paid app every day. All the more annoying then, that the pre-loaded Facebook ‘app’ is little more than a link to its website. Genuine apps and games installed and ran just fine – the 1GHz TI OMAP chip handles itself well.

Power and storage

With just 6GB of accessible storage on-board, Amazon is clearly angling for users to embrace its cloud offerings. Any songs or books you buy from Amazon are stored for free in its Cloud Drive, and you can also synch up to 5GB of other music before you have to start paying. There’s no Bluetooth, so you can’t connect a hardware keyboard or sound dock, no GPS and no camera.

On the power side, the Fire will play videoss or surf for around five and a half hours before starting to pop up with intrusive battery alerts. Amazon supplies a charger but, annoyingly, not a simple standalone micro USB cable for side-loading content.

How do the Kindle Wi-Fi and Kindle Keyboard 3G differ?

The clue is in the name, but it goes a little further. The Kindle Wi-Fi is smaller and lighter and doesn't offer a physical keyboard. It measures 166 x 114 x 8.7mm and weighs 170g, probably about as much as your phone. You get 2GB internal memory, enough for about 1400 books. It costs only £89.

It only offers Wi-Fi which can connect to your home network or any friendly network you can find whilst out and about.

You can read our review of the Amazon Kindle here.

The Kindle Keyboard 3G on the other hand is larger, measuring 190 x 123 x 8.5mm and weighing a more meaty 247g, giving you 3GB of usable memory, around 2100 books. The Kindle Keyboard 3G has a headphone jack, so supports MP3 playback too.

Importantly it comes with that 3G connection, which means you can be hooked into the mobile phone network, with support in over 100 countries. The key point is that you don’t have to pay for this connection - it is included in the £149 cost of the device.

You can read our review of the Amazon Kindle Keyboard 3G here.

Finally you have control. The user interface is essentially the same. It's basic, but it does the job. As you'll spend most of the time reading rather than playing with the menus, we don't care that it's almost entirely text based.

Then you come to that keyboard. The buttons account for the extra size of the Kindle Keyboard 3G. In reality this makes text entry much faster, because on the Kindle Wi-Fi you have to use the onscreen keyboard and navigate to each letter to spell out a word.

Actual device navigation speed is comparable on both devices, as is access to the Kindle Storefront within a couple of button presses. But once you arrive there, the Keyboard has a distinct advantage in speed again, but the Kindle Wi-Fi returns results as you enter letters, so can be faster at times.

What do those different connections mean?

Most people now have a Wi-Fi connection at home, but once you hit the road, finding Wi-Fi can be a little more difficult. If you have an Android phone, or a Mi-Fi, you can easily connect your Kindle to a mobile hotspot if you need to.

The Kindle Keyboard 3G on the other hand will work in many places globally, across Europe and the US, Australia, New Zealand, parts of South America, parts of Africa, the Middle East and Asia all over the mobile phone network. If you're going on extended travels and want access to content on the move, then it's certainly the better option, especially as it also contains Wi-Fi for when you do find a friendly network.

The other factor to consider is newspapers or magazines. A wide range of subscription material is available on the Kindle and although both devices can access it, if you want to be able to access your copy of The Times when on the road, then the 3G might be the better choice for you. If you rarely step out of your routine, or you're only really interested in reading the latest best seller, then the Wi-Fi should suffice.

Which device would we choose?

It has to be said that having lived with both versions of the Kindle, we'd take the Kindle Wi-Fi every time. The most compelling factor for us is the size and weight. It is light enough to slip into an inside suit pocket, or outer pocket of a bag and barely notice it is there.

The screens are virtually identical when it actually comes to reading and things like page turning isn't noticeably different in speed. The contrast on both devices is very good and general navigation is practically the same.

Although we can appreciate the extra speed that having a keyboard can offer, the onscreen keyboard is fast enough for us, especially as we only go shopping for books every couple of weeks. If you regularly find yourself sitting in foreign airports, bored, then the 3G version will probably suit you better.

Amazon released the Kindle First Generation on November 19, 2007, for US$399. It sold out in five and a half hours. The device remained out of stock for five months until late April 2008.

It is the only Kindle with expandable memory, via an SD card slot.

The device features a 6 inch (diagonal) 4-level grayscale display, with 250 MB of internal memory, which can hold approximately 200 non-illustrated titles.

Amazon did not sell the Kindle First Generation outside the United States. Plans for a launch in the UK and other European countries were delayed by problems with signing up suitable wireless network operator.

Second generation: Kindle 2

On February 10, 2009, Amazon announced the Kindle 2. It became available for purchase on February 23, 2009. The Kindle 2 features a text-to-speech option to read the text aloud, and 2 GB of internal memory of which 1.4 GB is user-accessible. By Amazon's estimates the Kindle 2 can hold about 1500 non-illustrated books. Unlike the Kindle First Generation, Kindle 2 does not have a slot for SD memory card. It was slimmer than the original Kindle

To promote the new Kindle, author Stephen King made UR, his then-new novella, available exclusively through the Kindle Store. On October 22, 2009, Amazon stopped selling the original Kindle 2 in favor of the international versionit had introduced earlier in the month.

According to an early review by iFixIt, the Kindle 2 features a Freescale 532 MHz, ARM-11 90 nm processor, 32 MB main memory, 2 GB moviNAND flash storage and a 3.7 V 1,530 mAh lithium polymerbattery.

On November 24, 2009, Amazon released a firmware update for the Kindle 2 that it said increased battery life by 85% and introduces native PDF support.

On July 8, 2009, Amazon reduced price of the Kindle 2 from the original $359 to $299. On October 7, 2009, Amazon further reduced the price of the Kindle 2 to $259.The Kindle 2 was criticized for its high original retail price, compared to the $185.49 manufacturing cost estimated by iSuppli.

International version

On October 7, 2009, Amazon announced an international version of the Kindle 2 with the ability to download new titles in over 100 countries. It became available October 19, 2009. The international Kindle 2 is physically very similar to the U.S.-only model, although it uses a different mobile network standard.

The original Kindle 2 used CDMA2000, for use on the Sprint network. The international version used standard GSM and 3G GSM, enabling it to be used on AT&T's U.S. mobile network and internationally in 100 other countries.

Kindle 2 International Version is believed to have a noticeably higher contrast screen, although Amazon does not advertise this. Another review done by Gadget lab^. disputes this and actually states that the font appears to be fuzzier than the first generation kindle. The review goes on to say that changes to the Kindle 2 have made it harder to read the smaller font sizes that most books use. On another website they also discuss how the font size is at times worse than the Kindle 1's. It appears that whether or not the Kindle 2 is clearer or fuzzier than the prior model depends on the font size. These issues became moot when Amazon sourced a higher contrast "E-ink" technology it dubbed "Pearl E-ink" and which it utilized on all of its e-reader devices thereafter.

Amazon has bolstered its expected Amazon Kindle Fire launch with a batch of new ebook readers. The Amazon Kindle Touch range consists of two models, one 3G and Wi-Fi, one Wi-Fi only. Plus, the company has announced a cheaper non-touchscreen Kindle that will only set you back $79 (£89 in the UK).

Available initially in the US only, the new Kindle devices, including the basic model, dispense with the keyboard entirely, with the Amazon Kindle Touch duo both featuring a full touchscreen and, therefore, no side buttons. They each feature a tap function to turn pages (pressing on either side of the screen), and boast 6-inch 600x800 pixel resolution screens at 167 pixels per inch, there's also 16 levels of grayscale.

Each of the touchscreen devices carry 4GB of internal memory, of which 3GB is available to the owner (enough to store 3,000 books), and measure 172 x 120 x 10.1mm, weighing just 213 grams.

Battery life is claimed to be 2 months if wireless is turned off and the ebook reader is used for half-an-hour's worth of reading per day. If Wi-Fi is on, it will last 6-weeks.

The 3G version of the Amazon Kindle Touch will cost $149, while the Wi-Fi only model will set you back $99. They will both be available in the US from 21 November.

The new non-touch Kindle, however, is available now. It's 30 per cent lighter than the current edition, and comes with a multi-way controller at the bottom of the screen for navigation. Its body size is also 18 per cent smaller, although it still features a 6-inch screen like the existing Kindles and its Touch brethren.

It comes with 2GB of storage (1.25GB accessible) which can store up to 1,500 books, and battery life is claimed to last up to an entire month, when the wireless connection is turned off.

The new $79 Amazon Kindle is available in the US now and will be available for £89 in the UK on 12 October.

Naturally, all the new models are compatible with all of Amazon's own Kindle Store ebooks.

UPDATE: The $79 Kindle in the US is subsidised by "special offers and sponsored screensavers". These will appear when you turn off your device or at the bottom of the screen while you're reading. If US customers don't want such shenanigans, they will be able to pay $109 for an advertising-free version.

This makes the non-advertisement laden UK model's price of £89 much easier to understand. We'd certainly be willing to pay that little bit extra considering.

Over in the land of the free (and the home of the brave) Amazon has unleashed its much rumoured ebook lending platform, entitled Kindle Owners' Lending Library.

And there's a heavy emphasis on the word "Owners" as you'll actually have to be rocking one of Amazon's devices to get in on the fun, the platform will not work with Kindle apps on other devices.

What the Kindle Owners' Lending Library offers is Amazon Prime members the chance to borrow a book a month from a choice "from thousands of books to borrow for free - including over 100 current and former New York Times Bestsellers".

However, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that none of the six largest publishers in the States are taking part in the scheme as "several senior publishing executives said recently they were concerned that a digital-lending program of the sort contemplated by Amazon would harm future sales of their older titles or damage ties to other book retailers".

However, it's still something for nothing - or rather something more for the Amazon Prime fee which also includes free express delivery of Amazon-bought products as well as unlimited streaming of nearly 13,000 movies and TV shows (in the States).

If a book is available in the scheme you will see a Prime logo next to their description and a "Borrow for free" button will show up below the "Buy" button.

Amazon Prime is $79 a year in the States. With the Kindle Fire on sale for less than $200 - Amazon certainly is offering a tempting treat of digital content for not very much moolah.

Let's just hope us Brits get some of the action soon.

Kindle has announced its new "Send to Kindle" software for the PC which attempts to make it super-easy to send PC files to your Kindle.

This has been possible previously using your Send-to-Kindle email address, but that involves a little messing around.

The Send to Kindle plugin solves this by offering quick file transfers. On its blog, Amazon says that: "From Windows Explorer, simply right-click on one or more documents and choose Send to Kindle. From any other Windows application that can print, select Print and choose Send to Kindle" making it really simple to move those files to your portable device for reading later.

You'll also get the usual benefits that the Kindle brings, so you can archive documents and download them to your device when you need them. You'll also get syncing, just as you do with Kindle books: "Your last page read along with bookmarks, notes and highlights are automatically synchronised for your documents (with the exception of PDFs) across your Kindle devices and supported Kindle reading apps."

Supported document formats include: DOC, DOCX, TXT, RTF, JPEG, JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP and PDF.

You can download the new Send to Kindle plugin here on Amazon.com.

As mentioned there is no Mac support yet, but expect it to come along soon enough.

It appears that the Android platform might also be getting a Kindle book reader app, if leaked promotional documents for Dell's Mini 5 are accurate. The promotional material describes a number of features for the handset, including "Kindle book reader applications", as well as "Amazon video streams" and the already-existing Amazon MP3 store.

There are few details other than that. The video streams functionality can be found on some mobile devices, but this would be its first outing on Android. It'd also be the first outing on Android for Kindle - there's already a Kindle iPhone app, and a BlackBerry one too. But with late 2009 and early 2010's dramatic growth in the Android platform, it's easy to see why creating an Android app would be high on the company's priority list.

Elsewhere, the document just revealed that the Dell Mini 5 would come in a selection of colours - there's no new specs or hardware details, we're afraid. No pricing or availability information either. When we get those numbers, we'll let you know.

Amazon has announced the opening up of its Kindle Digital Text Platform outside of North America. The service, which allows authors to self-publish, was previously only available in the United States.

Now, authors writing in English, German or French can upload and sell their books through the Kindle Store across the world. That can then be downloaded to Kindle devices, though it can't yet be accessed by regular PCs. Authors receive a 35% royalty on the list price.

This announcement serves as a reminder that Amazon isn't just considering the Kindle as a device, but as a tight ecosystem akin to iPod & iTunes. Of course, there's no guarantee yet that it'll be as successful as Apple's efforts - consumers have so far remained lukewarm on eBook Readers.

"Kindle for BlackBerry is a great way for customers to continue reading their current book wherever they are - in between meetings, at the grocery store or waiting in the doctor’s office. We think customers are going to love how easy and fun it is to read their Kindle books on their BlackBerry".

Customers using BlackBerry devices on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and other US carriers can now access over 420,000 Kindle books by downloading the application for free over at www.amazon.com/kindlebb.

3G or WI-FI

There are two versions of the Amazon Kindle available in the UK, known as the Kindle Wi-Fi and the Kindle Keyboard 3G. Previously these devices were essentially the design, but one offered 3G connectivity and one didn't.

However, with the recent updates to the Kindle line, the choice now incorporates different design and controls, so there is a fair amount to consider if you are looking to buy a new Kindle.

It's worth noting that in the US there are more Kindle devices which currently aren't available in the UK. We're not dealing with those devices here, only the ones you can actually buy from Amazon.co.uk.

Is the Kindle the right device for me?

Look around any commuter train and you can generally split devices into two categories: ebook readers and tablets. The two most common examples respectively are the Amazon Kindle and the Apple iPad.

The Kindle's display is E-Ink that offers great contrast and minimal power consumption. The battery will last you weeks rather than hours and you can see it perfectly in bright conditions, be that on the beach, by the pool or next to the window on a train.

However, with the recent updates to the Kindle line, the choice now incorporates different design and controls, so there is a fair amount to consider if you are looking to buy a new Kindle.

The Kindle isn't the only ebook reader out there, Sony is the most notable rival, but the likes of BeBook, Samsung and others have their own too. The thing that sets the Kindle apart from other ebook readers is the tie-in to Amazon.

If the Amazon Kindle store contains the titles you want, it is typically the most affordable place to buy ebooks, offers simplicity and, thanks to apps for PC, Mac, Android, BlackBerry, iPhone and iPad, you can access your books pretty much anywhere with syncing across devices.

The limitation of the Kindle is that you can't use other formats of ebook: if you buy an EPUB from the Waterstones or WHSmith website you won't be able to read it on your Kindle. Likewise, you can't use your AZW Amazon files on your Sony Reader.

Finally a word on libraries. In the US, a company called OverDrive has made it possible to borrow books on the Kindle from public libraries, so they are effectively free. Currently only Sony Reader devices offer this compatibility in the UK. We expect this facility to come to the Amazon Kindle in the future, but so far there hasn't been a confirmation of this.

Is it a jumped-up e-reader, a cut-price iPad or nothing more than a portable shop window for Amazon’s endless shelves? The Kindle Fire blunders into the tablet wars with something to annoy everyone: an LCD screen to irritate E Ink fans; a GPS-less, camera-less, Bluetooth-less spec to infuriate the techies; and a closed, corporate retail interface that makes a mockery of Android’s open source roots.

And yet Jeff Bezos can’t seem to make enough of them: Amazon will ship several million Fires to cash-conscious consumers this Christmas. At 7-inches in size and under $200 in the US (no UK release plans yet), this top-of-the-range Kindle could be the perfect stocking filler for the mass market eager to embrace our tablety future. Or at the very least, the first in a new wave of tightly integrated devices that don’t need a second mortgage to buy in to.

Substance over style

Anyone hoping for a design as ground-breaking and eye-catching as the original Kindle should adjust their expectations. Whether or not the Fire was designed by Amazon’s ultra-secret “Lab 126” just up the road from Apple in Cupertino, it has all the charm and subtlety of Yorkie bar.

Its best angle is from the rear, where a hard rubberised case has nicely rounded corners and a Kindle logo etched into it. Around the front, it is at least clear and functional, with a small bezel and a tiny rubber seal between the glass and the glossy surround.

The power button, micro-USB port and headphone socket are on one short edge - the Fire’s lack of directionality means you can call it the bottom (if you want the Kindle logo to read the right way up to others) or the top (if you want the headphone cable out of the way). Despite its low price, build quality is very good. The Fire’s 413 grams and 11.4mm thickness are more than you’d want for extended reading with one hand but they do at least provide solidity and rigidity.

Lucky seven

You can look at the 7-inch, 1024x600 display as either a serious step down from 10-inch tablets for viewing websites and videos, or a jump up from previous Kindles’ 6-inch screens for reading. Either way, it’s hard not to be impressed at the colour, clarity and viewing angle that Amazon squeezes from what must be a budget display.

The Amazon Kindle is an e-book reader developed by Amazon.com subsidiary Lab 126 which enable users to shop for, download, browse and read e-books, newspapers, magazines, blogs and other digital media via wireless connectivity.

The hardware devices, now in their fourth generation, began as a single device and now comprise a range ofdevices - most using an E lnk electronic paper display capable of rendering 16 shadesof gray to simulate reading on paper while minimizing power consuption.

Kindle hardware has evolved from the original Kindle introduced in 2007 and a Kindle DX line (with a larger screen) introduced in 2009. Announced in September 2011, the range now includes devices with keyboards (Kindle Keyboard), devices with touch sensitive screens (Kindle Touch), a tablet computer with a reader app and a color display (Kindle Fire) and a low-priced model with an on-screen keyboard (Kindle).

Amazon has also introduced Kindle software for use on various devices and platforms, including Microsoft Windows, iOS, BlackBerry, Mac OS X (10.5 or later, Intel processor only), Android, webOS, and Windows Phone Amazon also has a "cloud" reader to allow users to read, and purchase, Kindle books from a web browser.

Content for the Kindle can be purchased online and downloaded wirelessly in some countries, using either standard Wi-Fi or Amazon's 3G "Whispernet" network. Whispernet is accessible without any monthly fee or wireless subscription, although fees can be incurred for the delivery of periodicals and other content when roaming internationally beyond the customer's home country. Through a service called "Whispersync," customers can synchronize reading progress, bookmarks and other information across Kindle hardware devices and other mobile devices.

In the last three months of 2010, Amazon announced that in the United States, their e-book sales had surpassed sales of paperback books for the first time.
