Top Level Domains (otherwise known as TLDs) refers to the part of the domain name located to the right of the dot (” . “). The most common TLDs are .com, .net and .org. Others can include .biz, .info, and .ws. Common TLDs all have certain guidelines, but are generally available to any registrant, anywhere in the world, whereas some ccTLDs (Country-Code) (.AU / .UK / .IO, etc.) have additional transfer requirements and/or exclude some points from the list above. Please check the specific transfer requirements for your TLD here.

.AU is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) representing Australia. At the moment, it is not possible to register directly a top-level .AU domain (such as mycompany.au). The naming rules for .AU require registrations under second-level categories that describe a type of entity.

Opened second-level domains (available for the public) that you can register are:

.COM.AU – commercial entities
.NET.AU – registered companies
.ORG.AU – associations and non-profit organisations

Other opened domains are:

.ID.AU – Australian citizens (individuals) only
.ASN.AU – associations, political parties and clubs

Closed second-level domains (restricted to certain sectors):

.EDU.AU – educational institutions
.GOV.AU – governments and their departments
.CSIRO.AU – CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation)

**.AU domain names can contain up to 63 characters, with a minimum of two characters. These characters can be letters (a to z), numbers (0 to 9) and hyphens (except at the beginning or the end of a domain name; double hyphens are not allowed as well). Also, you cannot register domain names with special characters such as & and #.

You can register **.AU domain names for 2 years only.

An unresponsive iPhone or iPad home button literally makes these devices useless. I was having this issue with my iPhone4 for months – seemingly without remedy – yet it was not an obvious fault. Sometimes it would work, other times it wouldn’t. Usually when I was pressed for time.

Using the lock key would sometime fix it but this was unreliable. I was spending long fruitless minutes of my life pressing a button, trying to swap between applications, to the point where I thought using a hammer may be beneficial, at least to diminishing my immediate frustration with the thing. Apple needs to work a bit harder on smoothing out this obvious design flaw.

Pondering sending it in for repair, I ran a quick search via Google and came across a range of potential remedies involving lengthy and warranty-breaking techniques! People pulling their iPhones apart to defluff the button– poking around with screwdrivers– even spraying WD40 on it!

Thankfully I found this built-in solution and am happy to say it works. Hope it helps you too.

Whether designing graphics for print or the web, there are some basic principles worth noting if we want our designs to be well received. The technicolour horrors of the past can still be seen in the far reaches of the interweb, where these rules were obviously never applied.

Murch, G. M. in his book; ‘The Effective Use of Color’ (1983) makes these recommendations:

Avoid pure blue for text.

Avoid thin lines and small shapes.

Avoid red and green in the periphery of large-scale displays.

Note that all colors are equally discernible.

Do not overuse color.

Use similar color to convey similar meaning.

Use common background color for group-related elements.

Use brightness and saturation to attract attention.

Taking into account color-deficient viewers, avoid single color distinction.

Color combinations for user interfaces with graphic displays (Brown & Cunningham, 1989):

Written by Ahmed Hussam for Web Design TutsPlus (Apr 13th 2012), the following is an excerpt from Visual Direction in Web Design.

[br]

One of the big secrets of design is learning how to guide the visual direction of viewers. This principle is often overlooked by even the most experienced designers, so today we’re going to take a deeper look at how it works. Visual direction controls the eye movement of the user, and this is achieved through the combination of careful image selection and well-placed and aligned design elements.

It is greatly established that the default eye movement throughout the page (in an LTR – Left to Right – layout) is from the top left towards the bottom right as the image illustrates:

However by arranging the composition elements in a certain way, a designer can control and force the movement of the viewer’s eyes in and around the layout of the design. For example, the eye will travel along an actual path such as solid or dotted line, or it will move along more subtle paths such as from large elements to little elements, from dark elements to lighter elements, from color to non-color, from unusual shapes to usual shapes, etc. Graduation of size, and repeated shapes and size of related elements subtly leads the eye as well.

[br]

1. Controlling Directions with Images

[br]

Images can easily control how your clients view your design, below are some explicit examples of directional images that can either be used as part of your design or in the content to guide visitors around the page:

Of course it’s pretty obvious which direction these images are pointing to, however many images may not be as clear, take a look at these other examples:

Vodcast (Video)

eNewsletter

Blog

Think of the websites you visit the most — chances are they are clean, professional, and easy to navigate. This is no coincidence: the human mind takes just a millisecond to make a definitive decision as to a site’s credibility, and this initial judgment is based entirely on aesthetics which means a good web design is critical for retaining visitors.

1) Plan Your Site:
Before turning on your computer, consider the layout, page structure and how users will move from one page to another (navigation). Then, sketch out your site on paper.

2) Understand Your Audience:
Knowing your audience will help set the tone for your content and layout, as you identify what visitors will be looking for on your site. It’s also important to consider popular web browsers and your visitor’s screen resolution size so that they see your site the way you intended; you can find this data in most site analytics tools. If you’re not sure how wide to make your site, 960px is a great place to start.

3) Allow for Easy Navigation:
Since people often read from left to right and top to bottom, the upper left-hand corner of your site is the first place your visitors will look. Place your navigation buttons here and keep them consistent, along with font and color choices, for easy reading and fluid movement from page to page.

4) Choose a Color Scheme:
If you’re designing your site around an image, try uploading it to a color palette tool, like DeGraeve.coms Color Palette, or Color Hunter for example, for complementary color suggestions. Be sure to remain consistent with your design patterns, and stick to no more than three font types and colors.

5) Use High Quality Photos:
In order to give your site a more professional appearance, all images should be clear, focused, and of high resolution. An alternative to taking your own photos is buying them from istockphoto.com; at about five-dollars an image it’s an inexpensive way to visually take your website to the next level.

6) Test Your Site, Then Test Again:
When you’ve created or redesigned your site, ask friends and family to test it for you. They may find things you’ve missed, or point out areas of confusion.

When paired with quality content, executing these tips appropriately will help retain first-time visitors and transform them into yourdomain.com regulars.
