Kindles & iPads Are Not Good for Your Sleep

It goes without saying that we all need to get proper amount of sleep each night to stay sharp the next day. Reading at night can be a lot of fun, but did you know that your Kindle or iPad could be contributing to your sleep issues? A recent study has shown that people who use e-readers and tablets at night sleep fewer hours. The blue glow emitted by these devices can mess up your body’s natural cycle.

During a two-week study, 12 participants used e-books and printed books for four hours before bedtime. The iPad readers experienced reduced levels of melatonin, which plays a role in inducing sleepiness. Penn State and Harvard universities are behind this study. I would love to see more data on this, but the effects of blue light on the human body are well known.

The Kindle app is pretty popular these days. Many of us have learned how to use it over the years. But Amazon is attracting new customers all the time. So it makes sense for its latest Kindle app update to target new customers. The app helps them get started right away by selecting their favorite genres and rating books. It will provide them with personalized book sample suggestions powered by the Goodreads recommendation engine.

The updated app now offers better Goodreads integration as customers can now share book progress, selected quotes and more from Kindle. The Book Browser for iPad provides customers with additional information about books. The update is available for free.
