A student housing project in Slovenia for students at Ljubljana University designed by Bevk Perovic Arhitekti. The facade is made up of aluminum panels that can be opened up to reveal balconies, or kept closed for more privacy. Perforations in the panels allow air and light into the apartments, even when in the closed position. The panels create a dynamic facade that is always changing to suit the needs of the inhabitants.

The Liverpool Arena and Convention Centre, also designed by Wilkinson Eyre and the venue for this year's RIBA Stirling Prize ceremony, was shortlisted in the Sports, Leisure and Cultural buildings category.

Double-Skin Facade

Double Skin Façade is a system consisting of two glass skins placed in such a way that air flows in the intermediate cavity. The ventilation of the cavity can be natural, fan supported or mechanical. Apart from the type of the ventilation inside the cavity, the origin and destination of the air can differ depending mostly on climatic conditions, the use, the location, the occupational hours of the building and the HVAC strategy. The glass skins can be single or double glazing units with a distance from 20cm up to 2 meters. Often, for protection and heat extraction reasons during the cooling period, solar shading devices are placed inside the cavity

One storey height facade modules
The air cavity is divided horizontally and vertically at the level of each
facade module. Naturally ventilated double facades with one storeyheight
facade modules are also known as a 'Box window' type. They
note that most of the mechanically ventilated facades in Belgium have a
one-storey-height facade module partitioning type.

Corridor facade
Corridor facades are characterised by a wide air cavity partitioned at the
level of each storey. Essentially this is a one storey module that forms a
corridor which can cover either a whole storey or several adjacent zones.

Multiple storey facade
Multiple storey facades are not partitioned vertically or horizontally. The
air cavity extends a large height with metallic maintenance grids at the
level of each storey allowing circulation. In extreme cases, the air cavity
can envelop the whole of the building without any partitioning.

Shaft-box facade
Shaft box facades are very similar in nature to the one-storey height
module. However the modules are linked with building high vertical
shafts by means of a bypass opening. The stack effect draws the air
from the box windows into the vertical shafts and from there up to the
top, where it is emitted.

Ventilation mode
This area of the classification relates to the origin and the destination of the air circulating in the cavity.
Five ventilation modes are distinguished:

1. Outdoor air curtain
2. Indoor air curtain
3. Air supply
4. Air exhaust
5. Air buffer

Articulated Cloud by Ned Kahn

Composed of thousands of translucent, white plastic squares that move in the wind, the artwork is intended to suggest that the building has been enveloped by a digitized cloud. The optical qualities of the skin change dramatically with the weather and the time of day. The articulated skin is supported by an aluminum space frame so it appears to float in front of the building. The design evolved through a collaboration with the architects, Koning / Eizenberg.

Ned Kahn is an environmental artist and sculptor, famous in particular for museum exhibits he has built for the Exploratorium in San Francisco. His works usually involves capturing an invisible aspect of nature and making it visible; examples include building facades that move in waves in response to wind; indoor tornadoes and vortices made of fog, steam, or fire; a transparent sphere containing water and sand which, when spun, erodes a beach-like ripple pattern into the sand surface. Kahn won a MacArthur Foundation "genius grant" fellowship in 2003, and the National Design Award for environmental design in 2005.

740 metallic orbs amazingly dance around and form shapes in mid-air in BMW Munich Germany.
Thes metal spheres can move vertically through small steel wires that are controlled by motors to display the process of form finding.

This fully automated remote controlled fence is designed by FOXLIN for a client in Venice California stands 9' tall as a fortress wall for the garden space inside.

The property is located on a busy street where both acoustics and security were the driving design factors. The steel mechanism folds in a unique manner that compliments the interior space and provides a wide enough opening for automobile access.

each stainless steel flake reflects the bright sky or sunlight when in vertical stand-by position. when the flake is tilted downwards pneumatic piston, its face is shaded from the sky light & appears as a dark pixel.
