Question: where do those cool jazz guys get the ideas for song endings?

My quest for quite a while.

(Of course, you can copy them, but its not the same as knowing what’s happening because you know your’e just guessing.)

Aparently John Coltrane used substitue chords from Major Keys seperated by diminished intervals.

Freely exchanging chords, of the same position in each scale, between C, Eb , Gb and A.(see the b3 intervals?)

after some experimentation with this concept………………..

I was able to generate an endless series of subs for II V I’s (how most jazz tunes end)

in C Major: Dm7 G7 Cmaj7

the II (Dm7) can be exchanged for Fm7, Abm7 or Bm7

the V (G7) can be exchanged for Bb7, Db7 or E7

the I (Cmaj7) can be exchanged for Ebmaj7, Gbmaj7 or Amaj7

I also found I could end on the IV chord of those keys using Fmaj7, Abmaj7, Bmaj7 or Dmaj7

instead of plain old …………Dm7 G7 Cmaj7 to finish

how about this………..Fm7 Db9 Abmaj7+11

check Pat Martino out

his soloing over altered chords with this idea, is part of his technique

now grab the pdf>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

This is D7/6 no 3

It could also be Dm7/6 no b3

But since the other chords in the song are C and Em and Am

And the 7/4 Riff uses D myxolydian

Everything is from G Major and this is a possible extension of the D chord

It’s got to be D7/6 no 3

What a great sounding chord!
