Alacati is a charming village on the Cesme peninsular on Turkey's beautiful Aegean coast. Karanlik çökünce, samimi meyhanelerden sik kokteyl barlarina kadar her zevke uygun gece mekanlari açilir ve yakin çevrede gün dogusuna kadar çok çesitli gece kulüpleri ile kumsal barlari çalisir.

ST JOHN KİLİSESİ - Basilica of St. John, Ephesus

The Basilica of St. John (St. Jean Aniti) was a great church in Ephesusconstructed by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century. It stands over the believed burial site of St. John, who is identified as the apostle, evangelist (author of the Fourth Gospel) and prophet (author of Revelation).

The basilica is on the slopes of Ayasoluk Hill near the center of Selçuk, just below the fortress and about 3.5 km (2 miles) from Ephesus.

St. John's basilica was cruciform and roofed with six massive domes. The capitals facing the nave (central aisle) bear the monograms of the Emperor Justinian and his wife Theodora.

The current entrance leads into the basilica through the southern transept. Originally, entry was through the oversize exterior courtyard atrium to the west of the nave, which led worshipers through the narthex and finally into the far end of the nave.

The brick foundations and marble walls have been partially reconstructed; if they were fully restored, the cathedral would be the seventh largest in the world.

More recent excavations east of the apse have revealed a baptistery and central pool, along with an attached chapel covered in frescoes depicting the saints.

St. John Kilisesi, Selçuk Kalesi’nin bulunduğu tepenin güney eteğindedir. Bu yapı Efes’teki Bizans Dönemi yapılarının en görkemlisidir.

Tarihçi Eusebios, Hıristiyanlığı yaymaya çalışan havarilerin M.S. 37-42 yıllarında Kudüs’ten kovulduklarını, St. John’ın Anadolu’ya geçerek burada çalışmalarını sürdürdüğünü kaydeder. Böylelikle bu yıllarda St. John’ın kendisine İsa tarafından emanet edilen Meryemana ile birlikte Efes’te olduğunu anlıyoruz.

St. Paul’ün öldürülmesinden sonra St. John, Efes Kilisesi’ne bağlı kiliselerin başına geçerek İncil’ini burada yazar. Ölümünden sonra da vasiyeti üzerine bugün de kendi adıyla anılan kilisedeki yerine gömülür. Hıristiyanlığın Efes’te güç kazandığı M.S. 4. y.y.’da mezarı üzerine ahşap çatılı bir Bazilika yapılır. Bizans imparatoru Justinien (M.S. 527-565) Dönemi’nde ise bugün kalıntılarını gördüğümüz kilise yapılır. Haç planlı yapı avlu, narteks ve 5 nefli ana kısımdan oluşmaktadır. St. John'un mezarı, en ortadaki kubbeli böülümün altındadır. Mezardaki bir delikten çıkan kutsal tozun iyileştirici özelliği olduğuna inanılıyordu. 7. - 8. y.y.’da Efes, Arap akınlarıyla karşı karşıya kaldığı zaman kilisenin çevresine sur duvarları yapılmış ve bulunduğu yer tepe üzerindeki kaleye bağlanarak, buraya bir dış kale görünümü verilmiştir.

14. y.y.’da kilisenin yakınına yapılan ünlü İsa Bey Camisi’nden sonra çok daha önem kazanan bu bölge, günümüzde yapılan kazı ve restorasyon çalışmalarıyla her gün binlerce ziyaretçinin uğrak yeri olmuştur.

EFES - EPHESUS ON THE HILLS

Ephesus is the best-preserved classical city on the Mediterranean,and perhaps the best place in the world to get the feeling for what life was like in Roman times. As a strategic coastal gateway to the Eastern World, this Ionian refuge grew to be the second largest city in the Roman Empire, the site of a Christian shrine, and one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Legend has it that the Virgin Mary,accompanied by St. Paul, came to Ephesus at the end of her life,circa 37-45 AD. Renaissance church historians mentioned the trip, and it is said that local Christians venerated a small house near Ephesus as Mary's. In 1967 Pope Paul VI. visited the site, where a chapel now stands, and confirmed the authenticity of the legend. Also the Basilica of St. John is located near Ephesus. St. John is said to have lived the last years of his life here and after his death, a shrine was located over his grave.
Ephesus on the Hills was the name originally used for the site now occupied by the village of Sirince. This place was thought to have been inhabited at the same time that the city of Ephesus was the second largest city in the Roman Empire.
Ephesus on the Hills was so called because it provided water to Ephesus in the valley below through a series of aquaducts. Some of these remain to this day on the road down to Selcuk and Sirince continues to have natural springs.
Sirince is the perfect place to stay when visiting Ephesus, an easy 15 minute drive away. In addition to the ancient city Selcuk also has an impressive museum housing some of the best finds from Ephesus. Selcuk is also rich in other sites including a twelth century mosque and the House of the Virgin Mary.
3/4 of the ephesus is still under the ground.

Efes(Ephesos), kuruluşu Cilalı Taş Devri M.Ö. 6000 yıllarına dayanan, İzmir'in Selçuk ilçesinin 3 km uzağında bulunan antik kenttir.
Antik dünyanın en önemli merkezlerinden biri olan Efes, İ.Ö. 4.bine dek giden tarihi boyunca uygarlık, bilim, kültür ve sanat alanlarında her zaman önemli rol oynamıştır.
Doğu ile Batı (Asya ve Avrupa) arasında başlıca kapı durumunda olan Efes önemli bir liman kenti idi. Bu konumu Efes'in çağının en önemli politik ve ticaret merkezi olarak gelişmesini ve Roma Devrinde Asia eyaletinin başkenti olmasını sağlamıştır.
Ancak, Efes antik çağdaki önemini yalnızca büyük bir ticaret merkezi olarak gelişmesini ve başkent oluşuna borçlu değildir. Anadolu'nun eski anatanrıça (Kybele) geleneğine dayalı Artemis kültünün en büyük tapınağı da Efes'de yer alır. Bu tapınak dünyanın yedi harikasından biri olarak kabul edilir.
Efes tarihi boyunca birçok kez yer değiştirdiğinden kalıntıları geniş bir alana yayılır. Yaklaşık 8 km²lik bir alana yayılan bu kalıntılar içinde kazı-restorasyon ve düzenleme çalışmaları yapılmış, ziyarete açık olan bölümlerdir.

MERYEM ANA - House of the VIRGIN MARY

The house is situated at the peak of Bulbul Mountain, 9 kilometers (15 miles) from Selcuk. According to legend, St. John came to Ephesus with Virgin Mary four or six years after the crucifixtion of Jesus. Following the visions of a German nun, Catherine Emmerich, a group of Lazarist priests discovered a house, which is believed to be the place where Virgin Mary spent her last days in 1891.

Azize Meryem Ana'nın kaldığı bu ev, 1967 yılında Papa VI. Paul ve 1979 yılında Papa II. Jean Paul tarafından ziyaret edilmiştir.Vatikan tarafından kutsal ilan edilen Meryem Ana Evi, dünyanın dört bir yanından gelen Hıristiyanların ziyaret ettiği, gözde, Kutsal bir yer olmuştur.

Surrounded by hillside pastures, the houses are only 2 minutes from the heart of the formerly Greek village of Sirince. The village is a protected area and contains lots of unique architecture, including 2 churches. The maze of cobbled streets is like stepping back in time and can be explored at your leisure. The friendly villagers are happy to sell you herbs gathered from the mountains, local wines and handicrafts. The valley of olive groves and peach orchards in which the village nestles, gives way to vineyards and pine forests, providing endless opportunities for walking.

Selçuk ilçesine 8 kilometrelik bir asfalt köy yolu ile gidilen Şirince, 700 nüfuslu eski bir Rum köyüdür. Bağcılık, şarapçılık, zeytinyağı ve şeftali üretimi ile turizm köyün başlıca gelir kaynaklarıdır. En önemli özellikleri eşsiz bir vadide yer alması ve özgün mimarisidir. Birinci derece koruma alanıdır ve basit onarımlar dahi izne bağlıdır. Konaklama oranı gittikçe artan köyde yemek yenebilecek birçok restoran mevcuttur, ayrıca köy gün geçtikçe gelişen hareketli bir çarşıya sahiptir.
Selçuk'tan 15 dakika, İzmir Adnan Menderes Havalimanı'ndan ise bir saat mesafededir. Ayrıca Kuşadası'na 40 dakikada, Pamucak plajlarına 20 dakikada gidilebilir. Selçuk ile Şirince arasında bütün gün karşılıklı minibüs seferleri yapılıyor.
