It’s hard to believe that some children and adults can’t participate in athletic events because they can’t afford the required shoes. But it’s true and we hope to help change that.

King’s Campers is accepting new and used athletic shoe donations on behalf of Give Running. This non-profit organization inspects and cleans used athletic shoes and then donates them to folks in need. (They also accept new shoes.)

Please donate your good-condition, unwanted athletic shoes and the gift of running, jumping, climbing, and playing to someone in need.

A great holiday game

Secret Snowman

This funny game can be played for hours --so long as everyone wants to participate!

Supplies:

A paper snowman; handmade or store bought.

Painter’s tape.

How To Play: Put tape on the back of the snowman. Players try to stick the snowman to someone’s back without being noticed. There is no winner, but there are lots of laughs as the unsuspecting “victim” is unaware that she/he has been “secretly snowmaned”! (This may be more fun to play with little ones---or with spiked egg nog!)

Convection Oven Cooking Tips

It’s quite a change to go from a conventional oven cooking to convection. But with time and practice, you’ll learn to love this fast and efficient new way of cooking. Here are some tips you may find useful.

While some manufacturers say it’s safe to cover food with aluminum foil in a convection oven, the heat won’t distribute appropriately thus improperly cooked food may result.
Use glass covers rather than foil.
Because of the way heat is distributed in a convection oven, it’s best to switch to the conventional oven cooking setting when cooking casseroles and lasagnas.
Always pre-heat the oven when baking in a convection oven for best results. And remember that your baked goods will cook approximately 25% quicker when baking in a convection oven.
Air flow is the convection oven’s best friend. Make sure there is space all around the item you are cooking.
Always check the food 5 to 10 minutes prior to the recommended cooking time. This will allow you to make appropriate temperature and cooking time adjustments. Then save the results in the oven’s “my recipes” section if it has one.
Bake cookies on a convection-oven-safe shiny cookie sheet with no sides for best results. (The dark pans that often come with the oven absorb more heat thus resulting in more browning and crisping.)

A note from the editor:

Folks often ask us, “What do you DO in the winter?” Well first and foremost, we sell and service rv’s year round. Secondly, we use the winter months to get ready for spring and summer by planning for upcoming shows and figuring out what inventory to have on-hand for our customers to see. And thirdly, we try to make some improvements to our facility and its surroundings.

This year, we’re very happy to announce that we’ve got a great improvement to our facility: “green” lighting.

We’re using a new lighting system called “InteLite” in combination with solar light pipes. This system allows us to:

Track our lighting energy usage so we can find areas in need of improvement.
Our lights will be motion censored which will reduce energy consumption by staying off when not needed.
Thanks to solar light pipes, lights won’t need to go on at all during certain times of the day because they allow natural light to enter the building year round.
These lights are the latest in technology and each will cost about only $10.00 per year to operate!
The new lights will be installed in zones that will maximize energy savings.
We will have the ability to program any general electrical device in our building to monitor energy usage and to automatically turn on and off.

This time next year, I look forward to writing about how many tons of CO2 we reduced during one year of operation.

It’s wonderful to know how technology is helping us to help the environment. Who would have imagined that shopping for an rv at King’s Campers would be helping the environment? This is truly something to be very merry about!

Can you drink alcohol in a motor home while in transit?

**Per WI DOT State Patrol** Open container laws apply to all motor vehicles, including motor homes and pickup campers, except motor buses which are vehicles designed to transport people and having a passenger carrying capacity of 16 or more persons and chauffeur driven limousines. LIMOS AND BUSES MUST HAVE A HIRED CHAUFFEUR. No one under the legal drinking age may transport any intoxicants - open or closed.

Taking your motor home on a hunting trip? You are NOT exempt from laws and must adhere to what state laws dictate in the state you are traveling in.

For instance, your weapon must be cased and unloaded in WI whether in a car or motor home. (Going out of state? Do a little research beforehand to ensure you are compliant.)

King’s Tech Tip:

It’s time to get your camper/motor home ready for winter.

Here are some tips to help:

Vacuum out your appliance burner tubes. Because insects are looking for a place to stay warm, they will crawl in those tubes and block them up, thus the appliance won’t light.

If you like to use moth balls as a pest deterrent, place them on the ground underneath your RV. No need to stink up the inside with mothballs.

Be sure to add the correct Fuel Stabilizer to your motor home’s fuel. Read what the manufacturer has recommend you use.

Not sure which Fuel Stabilizer to use? Contact our Service Department for guidance.

We have DEF fluid for new 2010 motor homes. Be sure to have us fill you up before you hit the road.

If you do not have maintenance free batteries, be sure to check water levels.

Remove anything that can freeze from your camper or motor home if you’re storing it outside or in a place without heat.

Install Mud Dauber Screens to help keep rodents and insects at bay year round (but especially this time of year)

Why is water leaking from my camper water heater?

Weeping or dripping of a pressure-temperature relief valve while the water heater is running does NOT mean it is defective.

This is normal expansion of water as it is heated in the closed water system.

The Atwood water heater tank is designed with an internal air gap at the top of the tank to reduce the possibility of weeping and dripping. In time, the expanding water will absorb this air.

To replace the air, follow these steps:

Turn off the water heater
Turn off incoming water supply
Open the nearest hot water faucet in the coach
Pull the handle of pressure-temperature relief valve straight out and allow water to flow until it stops.
Allow the pressure-temperature relief valve to snap shut, turn on your water supply and turn off the faucet.

TRUE FOUR-SEASON

Just because your camper has a heated/enclosed underbelly (often mistakenly referred to as an “arctic package” etc.) doesn’t mean it’s safe to leave water in it during the winter. If your camper is not stamped “4 Season,” and it has an R-Value of less than 21, you must winterize it.

ings leaning Tips
This tip isn’t for cleaning, but it’s a good thing to do when you clean your camper for the last time this season: check your camper roof.

Check for soft spots.
If you find evidence of a potential soft spot or leak:
- Use a breathable tarp to cover the roof.
- Don’t have a breathable tarp? Use what you have but don’t tighten down the tarp so much that air can’t flow.
- Contact our Service Department to schedule inspection and repair.
Check seals around vents/AC units/etc. Make sure they are not cracked and missing. They should feel “gushy” to the touch.
- If seals are cracked and missing in spots, remove all the old sealant and replace it. (here is a sample of what should be used)

Play Time

MOTOR HOME SAFARI

Here’s a game to keep young children/grandchildren occupied during a stay in a motor home or camper.

What you'll need:

Small plastic animals such as zebras, giraffes, etc.
An educational book (age appropriate) on the same animals

How to play:

Hide the toy safari animals in age-appropriate hiding places throughout your motor home (make notes about where they are hidden if you are prone to forgetting where they are. We’ve all done that from time to time!)
Let the children search for them.
As the toy animals are found, stop and read educational facts from the book about the animal they’ve just found.

Switch this game up by using toy farm animals /farm animal book, cars/automotive book, etc. Gear the game to what the child/children like by using a little imagination.

We’re in zucchini season!! What to do with it all? Take it camping!

Wrapped Zucchini & Tomatoes for the Grill

INGREDIENTS:

1 med. onion, thinly sliced & separated into rings
2 med. zucchini, thinly sliced
2 med. tomatoes, sliced
2 tbsp. butter
2 tbsp. grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 tsp. Italian seasoning
Pepper

On four 18 x 12 inch pieces of heavy foil layer onion, zucchini and tomatoes. Dot vegetables with butter. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and Italian seasoning. Add pepper to taste. Seal foil packets. Grill over medium coals 20 to 25 minutes until vegetables are tender. Makes 4 servings.

Technology is taking camping and RV’ing to new levels. There’s always something new being developed. Here are some products that are getting great reception:

The tax credit for energy efficiency is available for improvements made to a home that you own and use as your "principal residence." This is the home where you live most of the time. A temporary absence due to special circumstances, such as illness, education, business, military service, or vacation will not change your principal residence.

The home must be in the United States. It can include a house, houseboat, mobile home, cooperative apartment, condominium, and a manufactured home. (http://www.energy.gov/taxbreaks.htm)

Be on the look-out for solar paint in the coming years. This is paint that has the ability to receive solar power to charge batteries. It’s being developed as this is being written. Amazing, isn’t it?

Another innovative product for towable campers is the wireless brake control. Yes, wireless. This is a trailer mounted system for vehicles that are not set up with brake control. That means any vehicle can tow a trailer (providing it falls within your tow capacity).

One more well received product is the Fast Way Flip jack. This is a “foot” for your round or square travel trailer jack that adds six inches for easy leveling. No more propping your front camper jack up on blocks of wood. And it stays attached and tucks away for transit.

And for those folks with back issues, the VIP Electric jacks for travel trailers are a hot seller this year. The touch of a button drops your front jack—no cranking needed

Mid-Season Use

Most of us have had several camping trips this season.

Here are a few reminders of what to check over this time of year:

Slide out gears: to keep them operating smoothly, use a dry lubricant: RV SLIDE-OUT DRY LUBE PROTECTANT
There’s never any harm in treating slide out gaskets to ensure they stay pliable and weather protected: SLIDE OUT RUBBER SEAL CONDITIONER
Protect your carpeting from dirt and wear and tear: (not in stock at King’s—but available for order through our parts catalog)
Having trouble seeing your camper while towing? Mirror extensions are the answer! (not all sizes are in stock at King’s but can be ordered through our parts catalog.)
Aluminum sided campers can be weather-protected as easily as fiberglass sided campers: ALUMINUM POLISH
Fiberglass sided campers can sometimes become discolored by hard water stains, rust, etc. Remove them easily with this: RV HARDWATER SPOT REMOVER DFE
On the road again… And worried about the finish on your motor home or camper? Try this: BIO-KLEEN POLISH & SEALANT (this part is not currently in stock at King’s. But can be ordered through our parts catalog.)
If you have slide outs on your camper, use Plexus to clean the OUTSIDE of the windows. This will help the gaskets to slide easily over the windows. (We are temporarily out of stock on this item, but it can be ordered through our parts catalog.)

Why do you need a water pressure regulator?

Campgrounds need to have their water set to a high pressure in order to meet demand over a large space. So it’s important to use a Water Pressure Regulator to reduce the amount of water pressure coming in to your camper.

If not used, you are sure to spring grand leaks throughout the plumbing in your RV.

What is “Camping Etiquette?”

Camping Etiquette can be simply defined as common courtesy. Courtesy is simply defined as politeness.

Seasoned campers know there are certain unwritten “rules” of camping etiquette that apply to the campgrounds we visit. And we adhere to them without a question.

Here is a short list to help new campers not get scorned by seasoned campers.

Don’t walk through someone else’s campsite (if you’re over 6 years old): Have some respect for your fellow camper’s privacy and belongings
Drive no faster than the posted 5 miles per hour: Children are biking and playing, and you’re on vacation! There’s no reason to speed.
Obey quite hour: Quiet hours are from a certain time at night to a certain time in the morning. These hours are specific to each campground and should be obeyed. If you are having too much fun and don’t want to stop, consider sitting inside your camper with the windows closed. Or leave the campground and go someplace where you can continue to have fun. But remember, quiet hour goes both ways-- not every camper likes to get up with the crack of dawn.
Pick up your garbage when you leave: Be considerate of next family that will stay in the camp site you leave.
Don’t leave your fire pit full of garbage: Take it where it belongs—the garbage can.
Never park on someone else’s camp site: The site may be empty when you get there, but it may not be later!
Keep Fido on a leash: Sure, your dog is a sweetheart that wouldn’t hurt a fly, but you still need to keep him/her leashed for everyone’s safety—including the dog’s!
Clean up after Fido: This should be done everywhere, but especially when visiting someone else’s property.
Obey Fire Restrictions: For everyone’s safety....
Treat the public bathroom like you own it: So long as you keep your bathroom clean, that is.

There are others, I’m sure. But these are the areas I see neglected just about every time I go camping. (I wish I could add that there’s a rule to not burn garbage, but I can’t. This seems to be one that is sadly ignored.)

This holiday weekend is a great time to check the date on your fire extinguisher. Is it time to replace? It’s good for 12 years after the date stamped on the bottom of the can. BUT you must inspect it yearly to ensure proper functioning.

You’ll need some space for this game and a lawn or soft sand.

How to Play: One player is chosen to be "it." He or she takes each of the other players in turn and, holding them by a wrist or hand, swings them in a circle and then lets them go. The swung player must freeze as soon as possible and hold that position as long as possible. The first player to break the freeze becomes "it." Since the first player swung must hold the position longest, begin with the oldest child first. The entertainment value comes from seeing the strange positions that players end up in and watching them try to hold those positions. (Be sure to have your camera ready!! )

Like shrimp? Give this easy to make cocktail sauce a try:

Tequila Cocktail Sauce

Ingredients

6 cups ketchup
6 cups chili sauce
2 cups prepared horseradish
1 cup Worcestershire sauce
3/4 cup lemon juice
4 tablespoons hot pepper sauce
2 cups tequila
salt and pepper to taste

Directions

In a large bowl, blend ketchup, chili sauce, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, hot pepper sauce, tequila, salt and pepper. Chill until ready to serve.

This recipe yields a large amount; you may want to half or quarter it.

The Joy of Full-Time RV’ing

I'll never forget the feeling of "liberation and freedom" the day we drove out of our Appleton driveway for the last time, pulling our new fully loaded RV behind us - our new life on the road was about to begin. We loved our home, but it was big, old and a lot of work. We love to travel, we enjoy each others company and we both have a sense of adventure. Those three components are necessary to become full-time RV'ers.

Full-time RV'ing probably isn't for everyone. But for us, traveling full time and trying to maintain a home base (paying taxes, maintenance, utility bills, worrying about property you were absent from) did not make sense. For me, the decision was a no brainer, but my husband needed some convincing. We were sure we wanted to move out of the house, but we didn't know into what or where. I suggested that traveling for a while would afford us the opportunity to see America and think about how and where we wanted to live when we stopped traveling. That seemed to make sense.

When word came from our financial advisor that retirement was possible, nothing could stop us. We prepared the house for sale. Professionally staging took the longest as we needed to remove personal and superfluous items from the house and show "space" which is what people are looking for. After a month the house went on the market. 22 showings and 4 weeks later, we had an offer.

How do you get rid of "stuff"? We held 2 garage sales, gave many items to family and friends (with the understanding that if we needed them later, that was an option) sold items on Ebay and Craig's List, and donated items. Personal items like photo albums, books and artwork were stored in a family members garage in plastic bins.

We were able to take delivery of our new home, which sat in our driveway for a month making it easier to transition into. On the day of the closing, we drove away with everything we felt we needed/wanted for our new life. We spent 10 days at a nearby park learning how everything worked. We finally left WI on Sept. 7th, 2009 headed for South Dakota to become residents, then continued our
journey, eventually arriving in the Rio Grande Valley where we had made reservations at the Bentsen Palm Village RV Resort for the winter. http://www.bentsenpalmvillage.com

Oddly, after 8 months, we only missed one item and that was a book. This summer, we returned to Wisconsin for a visit. We found that there were items in the trailer that we hadn’t used in the past 8 months, which we removed. Remember, it's about "need", not "want". When we buy a new t-shirt, we toss an old one out.

We were fortunate that my husband's lengthy research about rigs and dealers led us to King's Campers in Wausau. We can't stop raving about the customer service that we've experienced there. We chose a light-weight 32' KZ-RV travel trailer (http://www.kzrv.com/spree/index.html) because we wanted to maintain a smaller footprint during this first couple of years. We haven't been sorry. For us, a travel trailer has worked beautifully. If down the line, we decide we want something bigger, that's always an option. We like the flexibility of where we can park with a slightly smaller rig.

Any surprises? Not really. Being nomadic, full-time, professional vacationers has been good for us. We love the flexibility of deciding which way to turn, being able to explore places thoroughly, wake up to amazing new vistas (our yard keeps changing) and meeting amazing people.

Someone asked my husband what it was like living in a 32’ trailer. His response:
"Compared to the two-story home in Wisconsin we left behind (1800 square feet) one might conclude that we have severely cramped our lifestyle. If in fact we were confined to living in just the RV day in and day out, we in all likelihood would have killed or at least seriously maimed each other by now. But, the secret to living in an RV isn't measured in square feet. It's about life outside the RV where life is measured in experiences - exponentially, as it turns out. Forget about square feet. Think about square miles. Or counties. Or states."

It’s time to get ready for another camping season! This issue is full of bits of information to help you get ready.

King’s Tech Tip:
“Newbie” Camper
So you’re new to camping? Welcome to one of the best vacations you’ll ever have. Here are some “insider” tips to help you be prepared.

An 18 volt cordless drill works great to get your manual jacks down. But you may need to loosen them the old fashioned way to start. Cordless drill adapter
Lubricate your jacks at least once a year with light penetrating oil.
You’re going to forget to close your vents at some point. Avoid coming “home” to a wet bed or camper floor; have vent covers installed over your vents.
New chip in your motor home windshield? Cover it with scotch tape as soon as you can. This will help to keep the area clean for easier repair.
Don’t wait until a day or two before your trip to turn on appliances in your camper or motor home. Turn on your fridge, water heater, lights, generator, etc. a few weeks in advance so you have time to get things repaired if necessary. Volt meter
Before you run the furnace for the first time, open the compartment to check if any critters have made a nest in there.

Check your tires for dry rot, correct pressure, wear pattern, and tread depth.
Make a list of items to bring. That way you’ll have everything you need for a great trip.
If you are bringing kids with you, take them for a walk around the campground soon after arriving. This will help them learn the layout of the area.
“Mark” your campground with a flag, or ornament…something to help little ones find their way back. (And adults after a late night)
Crock pots are great for cooking in while camping. Fajitas, lasagna, stew, and so much more. They save time sp you can enjoy the day.

Why should you clean your awning before your first camping trip?

If your camper has been outside, the awning has gotten wet. As the weather warms up and the awning stays rolled up, mold will grow. So before your first trip, open it up and clean it with RV Awning Cleaner and a soft brush. Clean it as necessary throughout the camping season to help keep your awning in good shape.

Musty smell in your camper? Here are two non-toxic, inexpensive ingredients that will do the job and won’t harm your camper:

Deodorize Carpets: Sprinkle baking soda liberally and let sit over night, then vacuum.
Counter tops/tables: Spray surfaces with a solution of half white distilled vinegar to half tap water. Wipe with clean cloth.
Clean and deodorize a drain: pour in 1 cup baking soda, then one cup hot, white distilled vinegar. Let this sit for 5 minutes or so, then run hot water down the drain.
Clean the microwave: mix 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar and 1/2 cup water in a microwave-safe bowl. Bring it to a rolling boil inside the microwave. Baked-on food will be loosened, and odors will disappear. Wipe clean.
No-wax vinyl or linoleum floor: clean it with a solution of one cup white distilled vinegar for every gallon of water.

Here’s a great camp fire game:
Wheres the grapes?
Put an equal number of grapes on as many plates as you have players. Then “hide” the grapes under a mound of whipped topping. Have all the players sit around the table and hold hands below the table top. The first player to “find” all the grapes and remove them from the plate using only their mouth is the winner. **Don’t play this alone, unless you want your neighbors to question your sanity.

Here’s some easy ways to get some healthy foods in to your everyday life, and even when camping. These are foods that fill you up with the nutrition your body needs, not fill you out with fat and disease.

Eat one apple every day: To help protect against lung and colon cancer.
Eat at least an ounce of “raw” un-salted nuts every day: The vitamin E in nuts helps prevent oxidation of cholesterol, which leads to fatty buildup in the arteries.
Be sure to add spinach or another dark green leafy veggie to your sandwich, wrap or salad every day: Dark green leafy vegetables are calorie for calorie, perhaps the most concentrated source of nutrition of any food.
Eat beans as often as you can: Studies show that people that regularly consume beans weigh less than those who don’t. (Be sure to rinse off canned beans. They are soaked in a salt-filled preservative. All that excess salt is very unhealthy.)
Eat an orange for a “sugar fix” instead of a candy bar to help your body fight: indigestion, constipation, bowel disorders, dental care, bone health, heart diseases, respiratory problems, cold, cough, influenza, and healthy skin.

It’s hard to change old habits. But making these small and easy changes will make a huge difference in your over-all health and well being. You’ll be one very happy camper!

A note from the editor:
Is there an RV “sock monster”?

It’s been an interesting year and a half in the RV industry. We certainly can’t say we’ve been bored during all the economic turmoil as our emotions worked many hours of overtime.    But recently, and thankfully, things are getting back to normal: sales have picked up, manufacturers have started to re-hire employees to meet consumer demand, great new floor plans are being developed, and the number of folks camping is growing. Yep….things sure are looking much better.

Well, almost everything. Where are the trades?

It reminds me of all my missing socks. You know, when you wash a pair of socks but only one comes out of the dryer? It was the “sock monster.” He is always just hungry enough for ONE sock. And there you are….standing in front of an empty dryer with one misfit sock in your hand. You make the most of it by finding another misfit sock that somewhat resembles the other. And you wear them with the hope that no one is looking at your ankles.

RV trades seem to have fallen to the same “sock monster” fate of late.   I asked Ron Gajewski, President of King’s Campers (with over 40 years of experience in the RV industry) his opinion of this phenomenon.

Here’s what Ron had to say: “There are really three reasons that are the most prominent for the shortage of used inventory. The first reason is that we’re seeing an entirely new segment of the population coming to the RV lifestyle. Sure, they may have camped as kids, but now they’re in the market for the first time in many years; they obviously don’t have a trade.   This population segment is newly retired (or about to). Or they travel for work and are tired of paying the extra costs involved with travel. Or they have young families and are looking for affordable ways to vacation.

The second reason is good old supply and demand. New RV buyers that own a product to trade are realizing there is a demand for their product. So they are selling on their own in effort to make a little extra money.

And lastly, the media has been working hard to reach customers. RVDA has been advertising on television and in magazines and this has shown to be quite an effective tool.”

I can’t agree more. In my dealings with our customers on a day to day basis, these reasons are exactly what I’ve been hearing.   Darn. I really wanted to interview the “RV Sock Monster.” What a picture that would make for our website! Oh well, guess its back to normal life.   I’ll see ya out on the lot. Just don’t look at my ankles when you’re visiting. I may start to blush!

Cleaning snow away, arranging the lot, and putting all the slides out on the campers & motor homes: 48 hours
Making signage for easy lot navigation: 25 hours

And the number one thing we spend the most time on during Palooza?
30 hours making popcorn!

Camper Identification 101(for those new to the RV lifestyle)

Travel Trailer: (sometimes referred to as “pull behind”) a camper that is attached to your vehicle on the hitch for towing. They are the same height all across.
5th wheel: a camper that attaches within the bed of your truck for towing. Thus the bedroom is higher up than the rest of the camper.
Park Model: this is a camper that is meant more for staying at a permanent site than road travel. They’ve often got glass sliding doors and very long awnings.
Toy Hauler: Available in both travel trailer and 5th wheel models, these campers are designed with space for a 4 wheeler, motorcycle, or golf cart, etc.
Fold Down: (sometimes referred to as “pop-ups”) a very small camper that is made with a hard roof and bottom, but has tent ends that house beds.
Bunk Models: available in all models, these have extra sleeping space for more than just a couple. They have bunk beds, lofts, etc. in addition to the main queen bed.
Class A: These are motor homes that somewhat resemble a bus when seen from outside. They are built on a flat chassis and are found in both gas and diesel engines
Class C: These motor homes look like fat vans and they have a bed or storage compartment above the cab.
Class B: A motor home on a van chassis. Basically, these motor homes are vans that have been converted to house living space such as a bathroom, kitchenette, and sleeping area.

Slow Cooker Irish Beef Goulash

Ingredients

2 pounds beef stew meat, (such as chuck), trimmed and cubed
2 teaspoons caraway seeds
1 1/2-2 tablespoons sweet or hot paprika, (or a mixture of the two)
1/4 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground pepper, to taste
1 large or 2 medium onions, chopped
1 small red bell pepper, chopped
1 14-ounce can reduced-sodium diced tomatoes
1 14-ounce can reduced-sodium beef broth
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 bay leaves
1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Preparation

Place beef in a 4-quart or larger slow cooker. Crush caraway seeds with the bottom of a saucepan. Transfer to a small bowl and stir in paprika, salt and pepper. Sprinkle the beef with the spice mixture and toss to coat well. Top with onion and bell pepper.
Combine tomatoes, broth, Worcestershire sauce and garlic in a medium saucepan; bring to a simmer. Pour over the beef and vegetables. Place bay leaves on top. Cover and cook until the beef is very tender, 4 to 4 1/2 hours on high or 7 to 7 1/2 hours on low.
Discard the bay leaves; skim or blot any visible fat from the surface of the stew. Add the cornstarch mixture to the stew and cook on high, stirring 2 or 3 times, until slightly thickened, 10 to 15 minutes. Serve sprinkled with parsley.

The Holiday Issue! In reflection of the happiness of the season, this Caravan is about fun, great memories, and funny stories.

Kings Tech Tip

I asked our Technicians to share some of the most funny repair jobs they’ve experienced. Here are some replies (and possibly a lesson or two):

“A camper was brought in for a leaking roof. It was determined that the entire roof needed to be replaced so we began to pull off the old one. As we did, we found the entire roof was stuffed with acorns in every possible place a squirrel could fit them.”
“I’ll never forget to de-pressurize a water heater before I remove the plug again--ever.”
“I once spent time listening to a customer telling me how his 12 volt power wasn’t working. With just a few moments of looking around, I quickly determined the reason: they didn’t have the batteries hooked up.”
“I was sent to do a service job on-site. I lay down on the floor of the camper to remove an access panel. As soon as I took it off all I could see was multiple pairs of little brown eyes staring back at me!”
“I was unaware that a customer was nearby when I had a heated argument with a fellow employee. Colorful language was exchanged when suddenly another employee said, ‘There’s a preacher in here! Watch your language!’ Mortified, I apologized to the customer up and down. Turns out, the joke was on me…he was not a preacher at all.”
“A customer had just purchased a brand new motor home from us and went on his first camping trip with it. A week later he left his camp site but forgot to put down his antenna. Embarrassed, he came here for the repair. We put on a brand new antenna and made it as good as new. That is, until I drove the motor home out of the service bay without putting the antenna down!”
“I was trying to move a motor home to move it for service. But every time the owner of the motor home was not there, his dog would sit in the driver’s seat. I would call the dog down and he would jump down—until I sat in the seat! The he would jump up and squeeze in the seat with me!”

A few other humorous stories we remember

“One of my employees called to say he was late because his cat turned off his alarm.”
“One of my customers lost their cat during their show & tell. All of us were looking for this cat. After no one found it, we all feared that it ran out of the building. Turns out it had found the perfect hiding spot in the new motor home were no one could see it.”
“A customer emailed us to tell us that there was a snake in one of the pictures of a camper we had for sale on our website. What she was actually seeing was nothing more than a strap to hold the chair down during transit.”
“I was holding a customer’s small lap dog when her other small lap dog decided to use my foot as a latrine.”
“I stopped to visit with a customer in the lounge area. I stood next to her for several minutes chatting away when suddenly her purse barked at me. I just about jumped out of my skin! We both got a great laugh out of it.”

Here are a few quick and easy ways to decorate your RV for Christmas
Use Holiday themed:

    Place mats, napkins, towels, bedding and bathmats

    Dishes, mugs, glasses

Switch favorite photos with holiday photos

Wrap wall art in wrapping paper

Use holiday scented saches and “plug ins.”

Hang “travel safe” ornaments where you can

Re-purpose old holiday cards by cutting the edges with a patterned scissor, punch a hole in the upper end, and use colorful ribbon to hang them

A great holiday game
Fill the Christmas Stocking

Supplies:

Stockings
Bowls filled with cotton balls
Spoons

How To Play: Divide into teams. Have each team line up at one end of the room. At the other end, hang a Christmas stocking for each team. Place a bowl of cotton balls and a spoon in front of each team. Each person takes a turn taking cotton balls from the bowl with the spoon. They then carry the cotton balls on the spoon to the stocking and put them in the stocking. Race back to the next person in line, give them the spoon. First team to fill the stocking wins!

Not sure what to do with your left over turkey? Here’s an option for your convection/regular oven
Turkey Enchilada Casserole

Ingredients

1 1/2 pounds finely chopped left-over turkey
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 tablespoon minced garlic
2 tablespoons minced fresh oregano leaves or 1 tablespoon dried
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon salad oil
1 can (29 oz.) red enchilada sauce
12 corn tortillas (6 in. wide)
2 cups shredded reduced-fat jack cheese (8 oz.)
Chopped fresh cilantro

Preparation

In a 5- to 6-quart pan over high heat, onion, garlic, oregano, and cumin in oil about 4 minutes. Stir in 1 cup enchilada sauce.
Meanwhile, cut tortillas in half. Arrange a fourth of the halves evenly over the bottom of a shallow 3-quart casserole, overlapping to fit. Sprinkle a fourth of the cheese evenly over the tortillas, then top with a third of the turkey mixture and a fourth of the remaining enchilada sauce, spreading each level. Repeat to make two more layers of tortillas, cheese, turkey mixture, and sauce; top with another layer of tortillas and sauce, then cheese.
Bake in a 425° regular or convection oven until cheese is melted and casserole is hot in the center, 18 to 20 minutes. Sprinkle with chopped cilantro.

***Many of the recipes I put in Caravan call for additional salt. I most often omit that item because it’s absolutely not necessary. Take a look at the amount of sodium already existing in the ingredients you’re using and you will see that adding extra salt is actually an unhealthy thing to do.

A note from the editor
T’was the night before Christmas and all through Kings Campers
not a creature was stirring except for Ron and his calculator.

The campers were locked up for the holiday with care.
Their slides in, and steps up, as snow would soon be there.

The employees were nestled at home with their phones off.
While visions of vacation made them dance like pre-convicted Madoff.

And Ron in his office with Mary Lou on the line
Had just settled their stomachs on steak from IGA that Ron would go buyin’

When out in the parking lot there arose such a clatter
Ron sprang from his seat to see what was the matter

Away to the window he flew like a flash
Phone flying behind him, then landing with a smash

The Kings Campers sign glowing in the dark
Gave the luster of a red and gold sunset that made him remark

“Oof dah! What to my cataract-corrected eyes now appears?”
The vision of a gleaming motor home was just as he feared

When suddenly the driver flung open his door and jumped out
Ron knew in a minute these folks were lost in their route

More rapid than brokers on Wall Street in 2008 he came
And whistled and laughed at the site of Ron’s good grace

“My heater’s not working!” He shouted to Ron
“We’ve been on the road for hours and the wife’s frozen to the bone

From the top of her toes, to the bottom of her head
Now dash it, dash it, we don’t even have a warm bed! ”

As the cold Wisconsin wind whipped up like it does
When winter settles in for will feel like 6 months

Ron held open the door and invited them in
“Let’s see what we can do.” He said with a grin.

He put on some coffee and chatted for a while
And in no time Les walked in with that infamous smile

“Let’s see what you got.” He said as he downed a cup
And just as quickly Mark and Lynn were there to see what was up.

Tools in hand, Mark and Les got to work in a jiffy
While Mike and Tammy showed up swiftly

“Mom heard a crash on the phone just before”
A concerned John and Tracy stated as they walked in the door.

Within minutes Mary Lou was there too
They all gathered inside, while outside tools flew

A few minutes later the heater was fixed
The grateful couple was no longer miffed

They sprang to their motor home to get back on their way
And turned to wave adieu, thankful for their short stay.

Ron looked around at his friends and family
And his heart became filled with thankfulness and glee.

Corporate greed may have wrecked many a thing
But the joy of friendship and love can’t be bought (or replaced) for any fee!

Although we wish we didn't have to, in this issue we need to discuss protecting your RV for the cold weather months. We hope you find these tips helpful.

Kings Tech Tip
Winterizing

When you're winterizing your motor home or camper, don't forget these areas:

Close your by-pass valves on your water heater
Dishwasher lines
Washing machine lines
Outside Faucets/showers
Ice maker lines
Filter canister should be off
Drain the water heater
This is a good time to sanitize grey and black tanks

Winterizing is extremely important and we want to make sure you know how to do it properly. Please call our Service Dept with any questions. Or let us winterize for you. (We can winterize any make or model camper or motor home.)

Don't get caught!
You need to winterize as soon as it starts to get cold. But you're new at this and aren't sure what to do. We've got the answer: If you bought your camper or motor home from us, we'll show you how to winterize it for FREE! All you need to do is to call our Service Dept to schedule a time, and bring in your antifreeze. (We sell antifreeze and can help you determine how much you need. And we provide one free lesson with each purchase.)

Why shouldn't you put a tarp made from non-breathable material over your camper or motor home?
Leaks. They can happen to anyone and they are often hard to find until they cause damage.
If you don't know you've got a small leak and you cover your camper with a non-breathable tarp, you'll have a mold problem as soon as the weather warms up. The tarp will create a very warm and protected environment for mold to flourish in. However, if you leave your camper uncovered, you'll be able to spot the leak sooner and have virtually no mold growth as a result. (Or invest in a high-quality "breathable" tarp. See our parts catalog.)

Don't forget required service for warranty!
Many companies will not honor payment for warranty work if required/scheduled maintenance has not been preformed by a certified technician. Make sure you read the warranty information that came with your new purchase!

Don't forget your roof and slide-out seals!
Before you store your RV for the winter, check the roof of your camper. Re-seal and/or re-condition as needed to minimize side streaks and avoid leaks. Put a quality conditioner on the rubber seals of your slide outs. (Our parts department has these items in stock year round.)
Being prepared now will make you a happy camper next season!

Here's a great camp fire game
Mr. B's Shave

Give everyone a blown-up balloon, a marker, and a plastic knife. Instruct everyone to draw a face on their "Mr. B." After the marker ink has dried, have each person apply shaving cream to their balloon and then give Mr. B a clean shave with the plastic knife. The first person to shave Mr. B without popping him is the winner.

There's nothing like hot stew on a cool fall day.
Start up the fire and let it simmer while you sit:

Ingredients

1 lb Lean beef stew meat cubed
2 tbsp Soy sauce
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 lge Potato chopped
1 lge Zucchini squash chopped
1 Stalk Celery chopped
1/2 Red bell pepper sliced
2 Carrots sliced
2 Green onions sliced
2 tbsp Butter
1 tsp Parsley
2 Sprigs Rosemary
5 Brown Italian mushrooms sliced
Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation

Place all ingredients in a foil pan, adding butter and sauces last. Cover pan tightly with additional foil and place on hot coals or barbecue grill. Check after 20 minutes. Remove when vegetables are tender and meat is done as desired.

A note from the editor
I was recently at an out-of-town grocery store during a camping trip. While at the register I was told that I didn't qualify for the sale prices unless I had the store's "club card." This made no sense to me. Why would I have their shopping card when I don't live in the area? I protested but still wasn't allowed to have the sale price. What a poor way to treat customers!

The event got me thinking about RV dealerships. I thought, "What would our customers think if I told them they couldn't have access to a Certified Technician unless they belonged to our ‘club'?" And then I realized that many RV dealerships do just that. They claim that belonging to their "such and such club" enables their customers to receive certain benefits that we offer as a standard feature.

Issue V

In this issue, we're focusing on the importance of "Buyer Beware" matters. With so many choices and options in RV's these days, we feel that it's a great time to talk to our customers about issues they may face when purchasing a new or pre-owned RV.

Kings Tech Tip
Checking for Leaks

When you're looking to purchase a pre-owned camper/motor home, don't forget to check for leaks in the following places:

Check the slide-outs. Sometimes these leaks don't show up on the roof area, but on the floor where the water has settled. Stains deep in the corners of the carpet on the slide out are good evidence of a leak issue.
Open cabinet doors and look at the ceiling for evidence of leaks such as soft spots, stains, warping.
Look for staining and/or warping under windows, around vents, antennas and "skylights."
If you notice staining and/or warping push with your fingers to find out if the area is still wet and/or soft. If the area is dry and not soft, the leak was either caught early and further damage was stopped, or it has just started to leak. If the area is wet and/or soft, you'll need immediate repairs to prevent further and potentially devastating damage.

Many leaks can be fixed and the camper will be perfectly fine to use afterwards. However, if buying from a private party, you'll want to get an estimate on repair costs before you agree to a purchase price.

Kings Campers Service Department can provide you with a quote and can repair damage caused by leaks.

When is the best time to buy?
Is it spring when dealers have their "open houses" or trade shows? Is it late summer when dealers are trying to unload aged inventory? When is the best time to buy an RV?

The answer to that question is: you! Only you know when it's right. When there is no doubt in your mind that the floor plan is just about everything you could want and the price is one that you can easily agree to. You are the best judge about when to buy.

Dealers always need to move inventory; whether it's new, old, pre-owned, or aged. After all, dealerships are in the business to stay in business. If a sales person is pressuring you to buy at a certain time, buyer beware! RV purchasing should be a very enjoyable and pleasant experience from start to finish. So take your time and enjoy shopping for the RV that's best for you. And remember that at Kings Campers, we always post our sale prices on every RV we sell. We never pressure you to buy, never increase prices and never charge for prep or "show & tell." We are in business to stay in business --for you!

What does "RVIA/RVDA Certified Service Technician" mean? And why is it important?

RVIA stands for Recreational Vehicle Industry Association. RVDA stands for Recreational Vehicle Dealers Association.

To be certified by these organizations means that the Service Technician has been trained and certified by an association that holds strict standards to all manufacturers and dealers.

What does this mean to you? Because Kings Campers employs RVIA/RVDA Certified Technicians and Master Certified Technicians, it means that we value your business so much that we're willing to pay for technician certifications to ensure your RV is the best it can be. Simply put, it means peace of mind, quality, and that you are valued!

If a dealer doesn't invest in this quality training and certification for their customers…buyer beware!

Don't forget the warranty!

Look for warranty information on any new RV product you're considering purchasing. Reputable companies will clearly post product warranty information where it's easy to find and understand. If you can't find the warranty information for the new RV you're looking to buy, ask about it. If the sales person can't supply you with warranty information or doesn't know about it…..buyer beware!

What type of hitch do you need for your travel trailer?

If the travel trailer you're towing weighs over 3,000 pounds and you're going to travel long distances, you should consider a weight distribution system.

A weight distribution system balances the weight between the vehicle and the trailer which eliminates the chance for improperly distributed weight.

Improperly distributed weight is the result of too much weight sitting on the hitch of your vehicle. This causes the front end of your tow vehicle to sit too high. If you think about the front tires of your car not having enough grip on the road, you'll be able to understand how improperly distributed weight could be the cause of excessive wear and tear on your vehicle and more importantly could result in a serious accident.

Some pre-owned motor homes have plastic window tinting. Never use anything abrasive on this type of tinting as it will permanently damage it. Good old fashioned water and vinegar and some elbow grease is the safest bet to clean windows with plastic window tinting.

Here's a great camp fire game for kids:

Copy Cat

A designated leader recites the phrase "When I am camping I LOVE to cook brats, play frisbee, and swim at the beach", using dramatic gestures, voice changes, and facial expressions. The players need to repeat the phrase exactly to get approved or pass the test. The trick is that the leader does something indiscreetly before or during the phrase to throw off the players.

Examples: Clear your throat, cross and uncross your legs, or rub your hands together right before saying the phrase.

You need to have one other player who knows the "trick" so they can do it right and get approved each time as you circle the campfire. It becomes funnier as you continue go around taking turns and players can't figure our why they can get it but someone else gets it perfect every time!

New to cooking with the convection oven that came with your motor home?
Don't worry, you'll soon find it's easy as pie.

This recipe was emailed to me directly from GE for a convection oven.

INGREDIENTS:

½ lb. spicy bulk pork sausage
1/3 cup finely chopped green pepper
1/3 cup finely chopped sweet red pepper
11/2 cups frozen hash brown potatoes, thawed
11/2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
6 eggs, beaten
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
¼ teaspoon salt.

Directions

On cook top, cook sausage, green pepper and red pepper until sausage is browned, stirring to crumble sausage; drain well.

Place hash brown potatoes in a lightly greased 2-quart oblong baking dish; top with sausage mixture. Combine eggs, milk, Worcestershire sauce and salt, stirring well; pour over sausage. Place dish on non-stick metal tray. Cook for 22 to 24 minutes at U=MED LO, L=LO or until center is set. Sprinkle with cheese during last 5 minutes of cooking time. Let stand 5 minutes.

Back in 1990 when Ron Gajewski decided it was time to get back in the camping business, he already possessed the knowledge of what it takes to be a top notch dealer: service, service, service, and quality products. The service was already locked in with Les, Mark, Mike, and John. So the next step was to purposefully team up with RV manufacturers that held similar sales values to Ron's own. As a result, here we sit today -- still selling to those customers that demand high quality and service.

I should clarify that Mr. Gajewski couldn't just sell any product at Kings Campers that he wanted to. Manufacturers have very specific criteria their dealers must adhere to. So from the very beginning, the entire Kings Campers "family" had to prove worthy of selling the manufacturer's products we currently sell. And we still must work to adhere to those criteria every day.

There is much to be said about foresight the owners of Kings Campers had. They knew it wasn't smart to be "everything to everybody," but rather to specialize. Specialize in educating and training staff, specialize in selling only quality products, and specialize in providing honest customer care to every person that visits the store.

How are sales? So long as we can continue to sell with this philosophy, sales will always be just fine.

Issue IV

In this issue, we're focusing on RV Service. It's impossible to put everything an RV owner needs to know about RV care in one small newsletter, so we focused on a few areas we think our readers would be most interested in. We hope you enjoy this issue. And if you have any thoughts or suggestions on future service tips, please email or call.

Kings Tech Tip:
Slideout Maintenance

Caring for your slideout is just as important as caring for the roof of your RV. Here are some simple tips to keep you free from unnecessary hassles:

Make sure you are level before you attempt to open the slideouts. Being un-level can result in "twisting" or "racking" of the slide and or mechanisms.
If you've just arrived at your campsite, check the floor of the camper before you open the slides for any items that have fallen during transit.
Remove "transit bars" if you've got them. (Tie a bright ribbon around the transit bar that's easily visible to help remind you they are in place.)
If you're leaving the campsite, check for any debris on and around the slideout. Tree branches, leaves, brooms, toys, and countless other objects can easily be forgotten about or unseen and will result in an avoidable repair bill if caught up in the slide.
Be sure to read (yes, actually read it!) the instruction manual to ensure proper slideout operation. As there are many different types of mechanisms, there are many different recommended methods of use. Also, there may be required maintenance that must be preformed by a certified technician to keep your warranty in place if you have one, and the manual may be the only place that notifies you of such a requirement.
Other, periodic maintenance is required as well. Use a "rubber seal conditioner" to keep your seals pliable. Lubricate the slide mechanism with a "dry" lubricant that won't attract dirt. Dirt can get into the RV and scratch the flooring, or get caught in the mechanism and cause damage.
If you have hydraulic slides, you'll need to check fluid levels. We highly recommend the use of clear hydraulic oil. Using something with color could ruin the interior of the RV should it leak. However, refer to your owner's manual to ensure proper fluid and levels are used and maintained.
And lastly, don't leave your slides out during the winter. The mechanisms will rust, the seals will weather prematurely, and snow-load may cause leaks and/or structural damage to the slideout.

Safely remove gross looking streaks from the sides of your camper Use an RV approved "black streak remover" to easily and safely wash away black streaks caused from window and door sealants and roof coatings. Spray, wipe, and rinse. It's that easy!

Don't forget your hitch!

You may not be using your hitch right now, but don't forget about it! We've seen many "forgotten" draw bars completely rusted into the receiver. This can ruin both items and leave you high and dry when you'd rather be swimming at the camp ground. So, be sure to remove your draw bar when you're not towing. Store it in a dry place and lubricate the receiver with the appropriate grease whenever necessary.

Kings Kleaning Tips
Pest Control
It is important to keep your RV clean in order to minimize the risk of pest infestation.

You must remove garbage regularly, and sanitize surfaces daily.
Keep leftovers and opened packages of food in sealed containers or bags.
If you notice evidence of pests within your camper/rv, it is essential that it be dealt with rapidly to avoid damage, or a greater infestation.

Kings favorite cleaning tool: Magic Eraser
This little wonder safely removes:

Scuffs from leather furniture
Marks from soda cans (etc.) on fridge shelves
Soap scum from showers and sinks
Marks on the linoleum floor covering

Here's a great game for creative kids:
Campfire Theater

Before you leave for your camping trip, pack a "mystery box" full of random objects - a single high-heeled shoe, a ball of yarn, a wig, an old toothbrush, flashlight, a feather . . . The weirder the assortment, the better!

Divide your camping crew into two groups. The first half goes first and has 15 minutes to come up with a skit, incorporating as many of the objects as they can into the plot. The second group takes its turn, using different props from the box or using the same props in different ways.

The crew that used the most objects is the winner.

Cookin' with the ing!

One of the best ways to cook when camping with electricity is by Crock Pot (Slow Cooker). Throw the ingredients in during the morning, run around all day, and come back to a moist, hot meal at night. Ta-Da! The perfect "no muss, no fuss" solution to great camping meals.

Slow Cooker Barbeque

INGREDIENTS

1 (3 pound) boneless chuck roast (or venison roast)
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
pepper to taste
1 (18 ounce) bottle barbeque sauce

DIRECTIONS

Place roast in slow cooker. Sprinkle with garlic powder and onion powder and season to taste with pepper if desired. Pour barbeque sauce over meat. Cook on low for 6 to 8 hours.
Remove meat from slow cooker, shred, and return to slow cooker. Cook for 1 more hour. Serve hot over buns, or potatoes.

A note from the editor:

I almost hate to do it, but I have to be the "Camping Curmudgeon" in this issue. And it's because of my first camping trip this season over the Fourth of July weekend.

Being this far into the summer, you can imagine how much I was looking forward to that camping trip…..the sun, the fun, and the relaxation! But to my dismay, much of my time was consumed with trying to avoid fellow campers that were burning their garbage. Unfortunately it was excessive and thus largely unavoidable.

Now… I consider myself to be a pretty tough cookie, but I know that burning garbage releases highly toxic substances into the air. Such substances not only wreak havoc on someone with respiratory issues, but they are a major cancer causer! So even though I've got no issues with my lungs, I of course wanted to stay away from the fumes.

I don't want you all to think I'm just getting "preachy" about this, but burning garbage is a very serious matter. It's not just offensive to the nose and highly toxic to the environment, it's also illegal in the state of WI. Here's WI DNR's law about burning garbage:

Open Burning is restricted in Wisconsin by administrative rules. It is illegal to burn rubbish, garbage, oily substances, asphalt, plastic, painted wood, treated wood and products separated for recycling. There are exceptions to allow burning of clean unpainted wood, trees, brush and yard waste on the same property where it's generated (businesses require an approval). Local ordinances may be more restrictive, and are encouraged to supplement state law.
The WI DNR has a model ordinance available for local municipalities.
Here's what I know about one of the many toxins released from burning plastics: It releases a chemical called Dioxin. Dioxin is classified as a persistent, bio-accumulative, and toxic pollutant because it is a long lasting substance that can build up to harmful levels in the food chain. This happens when it's released into the air via burning garbage. The dioxins settle on our plants, in our water, and on our soil. Animals then eat the plants and drink the water and thus dioxin builds up in the food chain as we eat those animals. It's astounding to see the figures, but according to research I've done on the subject, it's estimated by the EPA that over 90 percent of our dioxin exposure occurs through our diet. Even if we don't eat food that's been contaminated with dioxin, small amounts of exposure can still occur from directly breathing contaminated smoke as well as from absorption through the skin by coming into contact with contaminated air, soil, or water. The dioxin released from garbage burning is very hazardous to us because it can have significant impacts on our immune, developmental, and reproductive systems.

Here's a little more information about how bad it is to burn garbage: The toxic chemicals released during garbage burning include nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), and polycyclic organic matter (POMs). Burning plastic and treated wood also releases heavy metals that get into our drinking water. If you want to have nightmares, go look up what those toxins will do to your body over time.

The majority of campers at the campground I was at had their children/grandchildren with them. I actually witnessed one set of parents throw a diaper in the fire pit and continue to stand there while holding their infant and toddler. And every night I was woken up several times a night with very uncharacteristic coughing. ACK!

Some of you may argue that garbage is burned all the time in major garbage facilities so it's already out in the air. But the difference in the pollutants released by municipal waste combustors and burning trash in a pit is…..like comparing apples to oranges. Garbage facilities burn at a very high temperatures (over 2000 degrees) and have sophisticated emission controls to minimize and collect pollutants before they can enter the environment. Burning garbage releases all the toxins with abandon.

What gets me is that with all the talk about "going green" and recycling and eating healthy…..how has this one area been missed? How is it that we make sure to eat low sodium, low cholesterol, low fat sandwiches but we throw the highly toxic plastic/treated paper wrapper in the fire pit without a second thought?

Maybe it's because when we're camping we really, really let it all go. We relax to the ultimate level and think, "It's only once a year, it's not going to make a difference." But if everyone thinks like that, how many times in one summer does "once a year" get multiplied, and multiplied, and multiplied? It's overwhelming to think about. Moreover, it's simply deadly to do. Please, don't burn your garbage and recycle all that you can. Thanks!

Here's a great solution for using left-over potatoes (recipe in our last issue):

Breakfast Wrapped

Ingredients:

Pre-cooked sliced or cubed potatoes
Uncooked eggs scrambled
Pre-cooked frozen sausage cut in pieces
The spices you prefer such as pepper, onion powder, etc.
Aluminum foil folded into "packets"

Directions:
Place potatoes, eggs, sausage pieces and spices in aluminum foil. Wrap securely. Place on hot coals. Turn and rotate a few times. Cook for approximately 8-12 minutes (more or less depending on the amount of food within the packet).

Check the air intake filters in your camper. Air movement is your air conditioner's best friend.

To ensure proper function, wash the filters in mild soap and water, and dry thoroughly before use.

Remember the old saying, "What's in a word?" Well, as a marketer, I can tell you there's allot in a word. Take for instance, the name of our company: Kings Campers. Many folks refer to us incorrectly as King Camper. It's a pretty harmless mistake except that we'd be out of business if we only had one camper to sell. But words are like that; two different words can have the same meaning to people even though they may be opposite.

Without realizing it, words will evoke feelings and thoughts within our minds that we will either enjoy or detest. For instance, if I write the word "recession," most of you will cringe. You may feel fear, annoyance or anxiety.

But when I write the words: camp fire, marshmallows, karaoke (did you just cringe?), card games, biking, hiking, fishing, and swimming, your mind will travel to a campground some place. You may even be feeling relaxed and happy just by reading these words.

Here at Kings Campers, when we see or hear the word recession, we think "camping.!" Because we know that camping is one of the least expensive vacations available. It's easy to do, there are no long lines to wait on, campgrounds offer a plethora of activities for all ages and preferences, and RV's come in a tremendous variety of floor plans.

No matter how you spell it or say it, camping is an affordable, enjoyable, individualized vacation that will leave you wanting more every time you go. So go ahead, plan a camping trip this summer and see just how far that one little word can take you.

Camping season is finally here!

It was a very long, cold winter!
So.how's your camper doing?
Here's a quick list of things to do to get your camper ready for a fun-filled, adventurous summer:

Check the roof. Make sure there are no cuts in the rubber, and make sure that there are no cracks in the sealant around your air conditioner, vents, etc. (If you suspect your camper has a leak, go inside and check the ceiling for soft spots, water stains, and/or damage. Then call us to schedule service as we can repair and/or replace any roof.) If you find cracks and/or cuts on the roof, you should re-seal those areas.
Check your tires for weathering and correct air pressure.
De-winterize the entire camper.
Sanitize the water system and check for leaks in the hoses and tanks.
Go inside the camper and turn things on. Make sure your lights, fridge, fans, A/C, etc. are all working properly.

Campfire Potatoes

Ingredients:

Large baking potatoes
Whole onions, red or yellow sliced
Dill, parsley, bacon bits

Directions:
Slice potato almost all the way through, but leave enough to hold it together. Slice the onion, and put one slice in between each potato slice. Sprinkle with bacon bits and a little dill. Wrap well with heavy aluminum foil and bury in the coals of the fire. Leave untouched for about 45 minutes, and test for doneness by piercing with a fork - the fork should lift out without lifting the potato. Cooking time depends on size of potatoes and strength of fire. Serve with pat of butter and a few sprigs of parsle y.

**Be sure to keep track of how many potatoes you put in! They can be hard to see.

Many years ago, I worked for a different family-owned business. It was my first long-term civilian job after a four year stint in the Marine Corps. I found that a family-owned business gave me a sense of belonging that I really missed when I tried working for a large corporation. And I became fast friends with everyone there. One person in particular sticks out in my memory however, a fellow veteran named Wally.

Both having served, we understood each other in a way that only vets do. We could joke with each other like family and our conversations could consist of one sentence, yet be full of meaning.

One day, Wally saw me eating my treasured "roach-coach" coffee cake upside down. He stopped and asked, "Why on earth are you eating that cake like that?" I answered, "I'm saving the top for last because it's my favorite part. Gobs of cinnamon, butter, and sugar-it's the best part." To which he replied, "Didn't you learn anything? What if you die before you can eat the top part? You should never save the best for last! Always take the best first."

While I munched away on the "best part" of the cake, I thought about what he said. I soon realized that I'd never heard smarter advice and at that moment decided to put his words to action.

Time passed, life went on and his words stayed with me. Which is why I took a job working for Kings Campers; I know the customer service we provide is always giving our customers the best first: personalized customer care from start to finish and beyond.

Did you know? RV Vacations are the Least Expensive Way to Go!

PKF Consulting, an international consulting firm with expertise in travel and tourism, found that "typical RV family vacations are on average 27 to 61 percent less expensive than other types of vacations studied." Even factoring in RV ownership and fuel costs, the study reveals that RV family vacations tend to be significantly less expensive than other types of vacations.

"This study re-affirms what RVers have long known, that RV vacations deliver greater economic value compared to other types of vacations," says Richard Coon, president of the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA). "RV vacations continue to be the most affordable way for a family to travel because of the tremendous savings on air, hotel and restaurant costs. And these savings offset the cost of fuel."

Fuel prices would have to more than double for typical motorhome vacations to become more expensive than other forms of travel, according to PKF Consulting. The study also shows that fuel costs would have to more than triple for trips in lightweight travel trailers or folding camping trailers to be more expensive than the least expensive non-RV vacation. Almost 80 percent of the RV market consists of towable RVs, including lightweight units which can be towed by car, van or pickup.

In addition to major expenditures required from the start to finish of each vacation, PKF factored in an estimated cost of ownership of the RVs analyzed: a folding camping trailer, conventional travel trailer, and Type C and Type A motorhomes. Research included documenting average ownership periods, residual values, annual days of use, insurance and applicable interest deductions.

The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (rvia.org) is the national association representing more than 500 manufacturers and component suppliers producing approximately 98 percent of all RVs made in the United States.

Fuel costs have come down and stabilized. There are great deals on exciting new models coming out. It's a great time to invest in an RV for years of vacation savings. Now is the time to see your RV dealer! Type A Motorhome among the trees

After a rough patch brought on by the mortgage lending crisis in 2008, consumer financing is beginning to normalize. Loans are readily available for qualified borrowers looking to purchase the RV of their dreams.

Kings Campers offers in-house financing through one or more national lenders or with local banks, finance companies and credit unions. Their in-depth knowledge will make the process go that much smoother.

Terms for RV loans can extend up to 20 years. The median term for new RV loans is just over 18 years for new RVs and about 17.5 years for used RVs, according to the 2008 Survey of Lenders' Experiences, an annual nationwide survey conducted by RVIA of financial institutions concerning their RV lending portfolios.

"Anyone who is interested in shopping for an RV should not let media reports about tight credit deter them," says Richard Coon, president of RVIA, the trade association which represents the country's RV manufacturers and suppliers, including a number of national finance companies. "Families can readily find a vehicle to fit their needs at a price to fit their budget, and arrange financing for the purchase."

You May Qualify for Tax Deduction

For the vast majority of RV buyers, the interest on their loan is deductible as second home mortgage interest. To qualify, owners must not already have a second home mortgage. Also, the RV must be used as security for the loan and provide basic living accommodations such as sleeping area, bathroom and cooking facilities. Virtually all RV types - motorhomes, travel trailers, truck campers and even most folding camping trailers - are equipped with these accommodations and eligible for to the tax savings benefits.

A Great Investment in Family Fun

Studies show that even factoring in the cost of RV ownership and fuel, families can save 27-61% on vacation costs by traveling by RV, so by investing in an RV today, your family can enjoy many years of quality vacation time together all while saving money generally spent airfare, hotels and restaurant meals. And the on-the-road adventures create priceless memories that will last a lifetime.

The bottom line is that if you are thinking of buying an RV, you should check financing options to maximize your purchase enjoyment. You'll be on the road enjoying your new RV before you know it!

To those of you that attended our Camper Palooza Open House: Thank you! We had a record breaking attendance!!
