Green finished with a game-high 17 points as the Crimson Tide improved to 19-8 on the season, 11-2 in the Southeastern Conference and a perfect 15-0 at home.

Rolltide.com- The University of Alabama men's basketball team remained undefeated at home this season after notching a 74-64 victory over Mississippi in front of a sold-out Coleman Coliseum crowd of 15,383.

Sophomore forward Tony Mitchell came off the bench with a team-high 20 points for Alabama (16-8, 8-2 SEC). Junior forward JaMychal Green logged 15 points and a career-high six blocks and freshman guard Trevor Releford contributed 14 points including 3-of-4 from the three-point line.

Men's Basketball Falls at Vanderbilt, 81-77

Rolltide.com- The Alabama men's basketball team dropped its first decision in its past five games, falling to the Vanderbilt Commodores 81-77 on Thursday night at Memorial Coliseum. The Crimson Tide now stands at 15-8 (7-2 SEC) following the loss while Vanderbilt improves to 17-6 (5-4 SEC).

Junior forward JaMychal Green notched his 19th career double-double with a game-high 23 points, including 19 in the second half, to go along with a game-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore forward Tony Mitchell added 22 points while freshman guard Trevor Releford added 11 points.

"We've hung our hat all year on our ability to defend," UA head coach Anthony Grant said. "Today we had a tough time defensively. Vanderbilt did a great job. They shot the ball well from the field, they shot the ball well from the three-point line, they did what they had shown all year with their ability to get to the free-throw line. We couldn't overcome that at the end."

Forty-five University of Alabama Student Athletes Named To SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll

Rolltide.com- A total of 45 University of Alabama student-athletes, representing football, soccer and volleyball, were named to the 2010 Southeastern Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll the league office announced Wednesday.

The Crimson Tide football team had 27 players named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll, third in the SEC, behind South Carolina, 31, and Vanderbilt, 30.

Alabama Football Announces the Hiring of Mike Groh

Rolltide.com- Alabama head coach Nick Saban announced Monday the hiring of Mike Groh, who will serve as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator with the Crimson Tide. Groh, a former quarterback at the University of Virginia, joins Alabama's coaching staff after serving as the quarterbacks coach at Louisville last season. Groh spent eight years at Virginia (2001-08) and spent three of those seasons coaching the wide receivers.

"We are excited to have Mike join our staff," said head coach Nick Saban. "He did an outstanding job here a year ago and when he left, he was one that I hoped we could bring back to Alabama at some point. He knows the game and what we want to do in terms of philosophy and terminology from an offensive standpoint. He relates well to the players and is also a very good recruiter. We are pleased to have Mike and Elena back with our football program at the University of Alabama."

Releford Named SEC Freshman of the Week

Rolltide.com- The University of Alabama’s Trevor Releford has been named the Southeastern Conference Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Releford helped lead the Crimson Tide to a pair of wins last week to improve to an SEC best 7-1 in the league and 15-7 overall by averaging 14.5 points, 6.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals in the wins over Mississippi State and at Tennessee.

In the week’s opener against Mississippi State he scored 16 points and had a career-high eight assists and four steals. His assists led to 20 points while his steals turned into four points making the freshman account for 40 of UA’s 75 points. At Tennessee he shot 50 percent from the field again and made a pair of free throws in overtime to seal the Tide’s third SEC road win of the season. He also added a team-high four assists against the Volunteers.

Basketball Tops Tennessee in Overtime Thriller, 65-60

The Alabama men’s basketball team defeated the Tennessee Volunteers 65-60 in overtime Saturday at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville.
Sophomore forward Tony Mitchell led the Crimson Tide with a career high 24 point performance.
“You have to give credit to all our guys,” UA head coach Anthony Grant said. “Everybody on our team who got on the court did something in the course of the game that made a difference tonight to give us the win.”

Alabama failed to score in the final four minutes of regulation, allowing Tennessee to tie the game and send it into overtime. The Tide scored all ten overtime points from the free throw line, not missing from the charity stripe in the extra period.

Nation's Top Offensive Lineman Cyrus Kouandjio Picks Crimson Tide

The University of Alabama announced the addition of the nation's top offensive lineman, Cyrus Kouandjio, to the Crimson Tide's 2011 signing class Saturday evening.

Kouandjio brings UA's 2011 recruiting class to 24 total student-athletes, including nine players who enrolled in January for classes at the Capstone and will participate in spring drills. The Tide's signing class comes from 10 states - Alabama (7), Florida (4), Georgia (3), Ohio (2), Tennessee (2), Maryland (1), California (1), Louisiana (1), North Carolina (1) and Mississippi (1). The Crimson Tide also went outside the United States to land defensive lineman Jesse Williams from Brisbane, Australia.

Listed by position, UA added six defensive linemen, four offensive linemen, four wide receivers, three defensive backs, three linebackers, two running backs, one tight end and one quarterback. Below is a biography of the Crimson Tide's latest addition.

Alabama Connections to Super Bowl XLV

Rolltide.com- Super Bowl XLV will be played this Sunday at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and the University of Alabama football program will be well represented in this year's match-up between the Green Bay Packer and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Five former Crimson Tide players and coaches will be participating in this year's event, including four Steelers and one Packer.

Former Tide defensive back Anthony Madison (CB, 2002-05) plays for the American Football Conference champion Steelers. Madison is in his fifth year in the NFL and fourth with the Steelers. He made one start this season while playing in 16 games. Madison has 24 tackles with one sack and one interception in 2010.

The Steelers also have three coaches with Alabama ties, including assistant head coach and defensive line coach John Mitchell, offensive coordinator Bruce Arians and special teams coach Amos Jones.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama men's basketball team improved to a Southeastern Conference best 6-1 in league play and 14-7 overall following a 75-61 win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs Wednesday night at Coleman Coliseum.

Sophomore Tony Mitchell led a balanced Crimson Tide scoring attack with a career and game-high 23 points. Senior Charvez Davis added 17 points, including 5-of-8 from beyond the three-point arc. Freshman Trevor Releford scored 16 points with a career-high eight assists and junior JaMychal Green notched his 18th career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Tide has now won four straight games and eight of nine overall and remains undefeated at home, moving to 12-0 in the Coliseum this season.

Continuing on our coverage of recruiting as we near national signing day on Wednesday, I wanted to take a look and see how rankings out of high school translated into success in college and NFL potential. No doubt, there are some absolute freaks that will have separated themselves from their peers out of high school, but some of last year’s biggest draft picks didn’t get five, or even four stars going into college. So let’s break this down, in the last three years, the top 30 players drafted garnered 3 two stars, 6 three stars, 11 four stars, and 10 five stars ratings out of high school. Basically two thirds of them were either a 4 * recruit or a 5 * recruit. While there are tons on people on each side of the fence as to whether ranking kids out of high school is worth it, it seems that even in high school the top echelon of athletes do separate themselves from the pack. That doesn’t mean that they are guaranteed success, but you know with highly sought after recruits that your getting someone that can handle themselves on the field probably earlier in their college career then most.

The list also makes you wonder how some of these big teams missed so poorly on some of these guys. Looking at it now, any school would have been ecstatic with bringing in a Aaron Curry or B.J. Raji even though they were ranked towards the bottom going into college. Overall, on Wednesday, most fans will be blasting away at the rankings that come out and they deserve to because the more four and five stars the get the better. But don’t overlook some of these lower rated players, because given the right system and coaching some of them could be the next one off the “big board” in the coming years.

Impacts of Top Recruiting Classes

With so much attention being given in the last week with this year’s football recruiting classes. I wanted to look back and see just how impactful a number one recruiting class can be on the team’s following season. First, let’s take a look at what teams took home the country’s top recruiting classes. Below are the top classes for 2002 thru 2010 from the top three recruiting experts.

As we would expect, the big names litter the board. Teams like Texas, USC, Florida, and LSU took home most of the crowns. There are some interesting teams in the list, who took a step backwards after getting the best incoming freshmen. Tennessee, USC, and Miami have all replaced coaches since bringing in the top classes. To add to this list, below are the last nine Teams to be at the top of the AP Poll, USA Today Poll, and BCS Champions.

The first thing that comes to mind is that over the nine years, only three teams have won the next year’s national championship. The teams to accomplish this are USC in 2004, Florida in 2008, and Alabama in 2009. While there is no question that a top recruiting class will impact the overall direction of the team, just bringing in the best high school kids in a given year doesn’t guarantee your team a Championship.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama men's basketball team continued its undefeated status at home this season with a 70-46 victory over LSU in front of a sellout crowd at Coleman Coliseum Saturday night.

Junior forward JaMychal Green led the way for Alabama (13-7, 5-1 SEC) with a 20-point and seven rebound performance. Sophomore forward Tony Mitchell added 12 points and four rebounds, while freshman guard Trevor Releford scored 10 points and handed out four assists. Sophomore guard Andrew Steele had a total of seven points in his first start of the season.

"I thought our defense really set the tone of the game," Alabama head coach Anthony Grant said. "In both halves our guys put together 40 minutes of the way we have to defend."

Alabama Sets Dates for 2011 A-Day Game and Homecoming

The University of Alabama has announced the dates for its 2011 A-Day Spring football game and Homecoming game.

The A-Day game will be held on April 16th at Bryant Denny Stadium, and as in previous years, admission is free.

The 2011 Homecoming game will be on October 8th, when the Tide will host Vanderbilt at Bryant Denny Stadium.

AUBURN, Ala. - The Alabama men's basketball team is off to its best conference start since the 2004-2005 season following a 68-58 win over the Auburn Tigers on Saturday at Auburn Arena.

Junior forward JaMychal Green and sophomore forward Tony Mitchell led a balanced Crimson Tide scoring attack with 15 points apiece, while freshman guard Trevor Releford and senior guard Senario Hillman each added 10 points. Green and Mitchell led Alabama with six rebounds apiece while Hillman added a game-high five assists. Green's first bucket of the game made him the 43rd player in UA history with 1,000 career points and he finished the night with 1,014 career points.

The Crimson Tide (12-7, 4-1 SEC) has won seven of its last eight and sits alone atop the Western Division after holding its 14th opponent under 40 percent shooting this season.

Curt Cignetti has added his name to list of Alabama assistant coaches that have left this off season. Cignetti is leaving to become the new head coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
