Last year (2011) the ’100 in 100 team’ set the industry the massive challenge of placing 100 apprentices into jobs in security in as many days.

Not only was the target far exceeded with 180 young people finding a job as a result of the drive, but the industry gained acclaim with the government and national press.

The program has since progressed to the founders of 100 in 100 securing a meeting with Skills Minister, John Hayes, where they will continue to pioneer growth and employment opportunities for school leavers – putting the security industry firmly on the map and in the public eye.

Our organisation currently has 11 employees undergoing apprenticeships, with 3 working towards the business administration framework and the remainder 8 working towards engineering manufacturing frameworks.

This number is set to increase this year.

From humble beginnings, our roots with The Co-operative go back to the days of The Leeds Co-operative where we first began providing monitoring services.

In 2006, we began working closely with the United Co-op providing support to Sunwin Security.

The United Co-op then became part of The ‘Co-operative Group’ and we were subsequently awarded monitoring contracts together with a programme for the implementation of IP Signalling in 2008.

In 2011 ‘The Co-operative Group’ went back out to tender for the provision of Monitored Services and for the provision of keyholding Services to the estate.

Kings Security Systems had been providing a regional service for guarding, keyholding, escorted protection and mobile patrols for four years. Confident of the management processes and the logistical infrastructure in place we were keen to tender for these services nationally.

We knew our client well and were confident of the savings and improvements that could be made by combining these services. In December 2011 both contracts were awarded to Kings. Not only were we  to retain the monitoring services, we were now able to take over the keyholding and escorted protection services provided to 3,036 of their sites.

The implementation process began right away. Once the detail of every location was imported into our systems,  a full keyholder escort service was put in place. We then worked closely with G4S to obtain site keys and alarm codes from all of their hubs. These were checked centrally and redistributed to our own management centres.

A risk assessment was documented with detailed site instructions and hazard forms for each of the locations. Once processed the sites could begin going live to provide a full keyholding service. As each site was transitioned to Kings, the escort service could be gradually phased out. All keyholding contracts were ready to go live ahead of our 1st April deadline.

Tony Goldstein, Head of Guarding Services, commented: “This project is very exciting for Kings as it’s our first national keyholding contract. We are delighted that ‘The Co-operative Group’ have entrusted us with these services following a thorough evaluation throughout the tender process.”

In addition to securing the keyholding contracts, we were also able to consolidate additional sites for our monitoring services. This included several hundred sites within ‘The Co-operative Banking Group’ that were transferred away from SSS in Bristol and also an in house monitoring facility in Leak.

Consolidation of these contracts now brings the number of monitored sites up to 4,500 systems (including 1,500 ATM Cash Machines) 2,800 of which signal via IP.

All these sites now signal into our alarm receiving centre UK Monitoring.

UK Monitoring also manages the offsite monitoring, access and security for eight of ‘The Co-operative Groups’ major distribution centres.

Paul Hughes – Head Chef to Kings Café 25, completed an eight hour bike ride with his friend Liam Gill and raised more than £2,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

At the end of the ride, the bikes were secured to Paul’s car whilst the friends went onto Blackpool front. When they returned they found that thieves had set fire to the locks, almost destroying the bikes and causing severe damage to the vehicle amounting to a personal loss of up to £2,500

Paul Hughes commented ‘this was a huge blow to us as we had a number of other rides planned. I am also getting married this year so this couldn’t have come at a worse time, but the support we have received since the attack has been overwhelming’

Paul’s colleagues from Kings gave a show of support donating money towards the repair of his car. This has enabled him to put the money spent on repairs back into a very empty wedding pot of savings much to the relief of his fiancée Sophie.

Scott Sports, a leading high end bike and winter sports manufacturer offered to loan them 2 brand new fully specified bikes for 12 months worth £1,000 a piece. When they went to collect the bikes they were told they could keep them.

Garage Bikes, an independent bike repair and accessories specialist in Morley, have offered to restore the damaged bikes free of charge, once restored they will go into a charity auction for Macmillan.

Paul had managed to replace parts to his car from local scrap yards when he received a call from McGregor Autosalvage with a bumper donation again this will go into a charity auction. He was also offered professional re spray from Archbold Carshop.

Since losing his brother Kevin in 2007 who was only 25 years of age, Paul has taken part in numerous events with Liam who has also lost two family members to cancer. Together they have raised thousands of pounds for charity. Thanks to the support the friends can keep in training.

Their next event is for Marie Curie and will take place in September on the date Paul’s brother passed away. It will involve cycling a 100 mile route from Leeds to Lake Windermere. 2013 will see them complete their first coast to coast bike ride which at 200 miles will definitely be their biggest yet, again raising  money for charity.

The land was acquired by the property & leisure group Skelwith in 2006, although the development took some time to approve due to the complexity of its location. The thirty million pound conversion was finally agreed in 2009 and work began to convert this historic dwelling into a 42 bedroom luxury hotel and spa in 2010.

Kings Security Systems were appointed by Morfitts to carry out the installation of electronic security and surveillance. Work began in December 2010 to install a CCTV System which comprised of external fixed domes with infra red lighting and external fixed cameras mounted on columns surrounding the parking area. An Intruder alarm was also installed to protect the perimeter of the building together with a fire and disabled refuge system.

This remarkable property has had quite a history. Originally home to the Pyman family, 19th Century sail and steamship owners, it passed to wealthy shipping tycoon William Headlam in 1939 to be used as his home and offices. Mr Headlam left the estate and multi million pound fortune to his nurse Trudi Tanner in 1991, making her the richest woman in Britain.

Miss Tanner retired from the estate in 2006, after which time the land was acquired by North Yorkshire property developers ‘The Skelwith Group’ who sought to convert it.

Having worked with Morfitts before they trusted our attention to detail and quality of workmanship so had little hesitation awarding these contracts.  We were also able to be extremely competitive in our pricing as we are able to carry out the multiple disciplines required.
