Cane and rattan furniture can look challenging to clean which may put some people off purchasing it. However, when it is maintained regularly, just like anything else in the house, then it can actually be fairly easy to clean.

What Is Cane & Rattan?

Cane and rattan actually come from the same tree but cane furniture is made by peeling off the skin of the rattan vine and then wrapping it around a solid hardwood, aluminium or steel frame.

Rattan, on the other hand, is made just from the plant itself and is known to be one of the strongest and most durable woods available.

How To Clean Your Cane & Rattan Furniture

The key to keeping this furniture in good shape is by cleaning it regularly just as you would hoover your carpets or wash your sheets to keep them in good condition.

These are some steps you should follow to ensure your rattan dining furniture lasts as long as possible.

Once a week you should hoover your furniture with the soft brush attachment and then once a month you should complete a deeper clean. This deeper clean can be completed in 5 simple steps.

• Vacuum your furniture before starting your deep clean.
• Get yourself a bowl of lukewarm water with washing-up liquid and stir vigorously until there are lots of suds.
• Dip a cloth into your mixture and wipe down your furniture without getting it too wet.
• To get into the small gaps you can use a toothbrush which is dipped into the liquid too.
• Once it is clean, dry it with a cloth and don’t use it again until it is completely dry. Cleaning it on a sunny day will speed the drying process up and ensure the material doesn’t get mouldy.

Restoring The Furniture

After years of use, unfortunately, your cane and rattan furniture will begin to look a bit shabby. This does not mean it is time to chuck them out though, it means it is time to restore the furniture.

• Purchase boiled linseed oil, you don’t need to boil it yourself
• Dip a soft cloth into the liquid 
• Apply it to the furniture until it will no longer absorb any more

• Allow it to dry or harden before using the furniture again

Should I oil rattan furniture?

Rattan furniture over time can become dried out and start to make the furniture look old. Not only that but dried out furniture can also lead to cracking and the cane splitting.

To stop this the best method is by using linseed oil which has been boiled. By applying this once a year with a brush will keep the rattan cane furniture looking brand new. We recommend using a brush and not a cloth to get into those tight weaves and corners.

Can you varnish rattan cane furniture?

You can varnish rattan furniture and in fact, this is known as resealing. Varnish can come away and wear off over a period of time therefore it is important that you reseal your rattan furniture with varnish.

Can I leave rattan furniture in direct sunlight?

In an ideal world no, however, we realise that if you have rattan furniture in a conservatory which receives a lot of sunlight then it is difficult to get away from. In short, the sunlight can start to break down the cane and also dry it out. That is why you need to keep the cane furniture oiled. Also, the direct sunlight could cause some natural bleaching of the cane too. 

Therefore our best advice that we could give is that where possible place any cane furniture for example a cane sofa set, in shaded areas or if you do have shutters or slat blinds just just draw them down during the sun’s brightest part of the day.

Can I get rattan furniture wet?

As rattan furniture is made from organic natural material it is not supposed to withstand extensive amounts of moisture (rain). Even though our products are mainly for indoors we realise that sometimes they may be used outside.  For example, if a chair remains outside for a period of time it is highly advised that the chair’s legs are placed upon chair feet protectors so that it is raised off the ground to stop the feet from getting wet and that the chair is covered with thick plastic sheeting.

Back indoors, if you spill liquids, for example, a drink over the chair, you can use a lukewarm detergent mix and wash over the area. It is important though to immediately dry the area with a towel and also so gently go over the area with a low heat from a hair dryer.

Taking care of your rattan furniture is extremely important, however, no matter how much you look after it, eventually it will be in need of some kind of repair. It is a good idea to be aware of the issues that could arise and how to treat them which is what this article should teach you.

Rattan furniture is very durable and can last for many years, however, eventually, it will start to wear down. When this happens they will need repairing and most of the time, these repairs are fairly straight forward. These are a few of the things you should look out for as you rattan furniture ages:

• Broken or Loose Strands
• Loose or Worn Out Screws
• Worn Out Feet

Steps to Repairing

Each problem requires a different solution in order to repair it. We will go over each possible problem that could occur and help you figure out how to fix it.

Broken or Loose Strands

After many years of use, the strands that have been weaved together may become loose. If this happens it needs to be repaired as quickly as possible before the problem gets worse. Loose strands are an easy fix and all you will need is some superglue from any supermarket and glue the strand that was loose, back into place.

If there are actually pieces that have broken off and are now missing, you can replace this with some new material instead. You can usually find this from a local craft store or even online. Once you have the new piece of material, you can cut off any broken material if there is any and then work on weaving in that new material and glueing it in place.

Loose or Worn Out Screws

Loose or worn out screws, again will just naturally happen over time. If the screws are loose this is a straight forward fix. All you will need to fix it is either an allen key or a screwdriver, whichever the screw needs, and they tighten it up using this.

If the screw is worn out you can simply remove the worn-out ones and replace with new ones which you can find from your local DIY store.

Worn Out Feet

If you notice that when you are sitting on your rattan chair or at the table, it slightly wobbles, it may have a foot which is a bit worn out. This is an easy fix. You can purchase new legs or plastic glides from your local DIY store.

Maintaining Rattan Furniture Tips

Of course, eventually, your rattan furniture which needs a bit of repair, however, there are some things you can do which will keep your furniture in good condition for as long as possible. These are some tips to prolong the life of your rattan furniture:

Gently Clean

Make sure you dust your furniture regularly, some polish can be used sparingly but it isn’t necessary. As well as dusting it, you can also clean it with a wet cloth but make sure it isn’t too wet, however, if this happens it isn’t the end of the world, just make sure to dry it somewhere warm like outside in the sun.

If you even notice that mildew or mould growing on the furniture, make sure to treat it immediately, you can use a bleach solution to treat the affected area and leave it to dry in the sun. 

Lift When Using

Dragging the furniture around can cause fibres to split so it is best just to lift it up when moving it instead.

Rotate

Rattan fibres can fade in strong light over time. If you are able to rotate the positioning of your furniture regularly, this could help a lot. This way it isn’t exposed to as much light, another solution is installing blinds to cover the furniture occasionally.

What is Rattan?

Rattan furniture is produced by using materials found in a rattan plant, which is found in the jungle and is an exceptionally sustainable wood. Rattan plants are vines that climb up the tropical trees and can reach 100 metres long in the wild. When harvested, these plants can begin their journey to becoming the well known and loved furniture we have today.

How is it Made?

When the rattan is harvested, it is generally cut into 13 feet long strips and left to dry in the sun, which is an extremely eco-friendly process. Whilst drying, it is essential that they maintain their straight form so they can be used properly during the production.

After it has been dried, it is sent to manufacturers to be made into rattan furniture. This wood is extremely flexible which makes it perfect for making intricate designs on tables, chairs and many other objects. 

What Makes Rattan Furniture Eco Friendly? 

Rattan grows extremely fast, even up to 2cm per day, meaning it is fully grown and ready to harvest within 2 years. This is extremely fast compared to other woods which can take 20-30 years.

Unlike other woods, when harvested, the rest of the forest will remain intact rather than being chopped down. This is because, in order for the rattan to grow and survive, it must use the other trees and vegetation to climb up.

From sourcing the material, to its production it is extremely sustainable but it doesn’t stop there. Once you are done with the rattan furniture, it can then be recycled since it is completely biodegradable.
