Prune azaleas, if required. Fertilize with Nitro-Phos Azalea, Camellia Food or MicroLife Organic Azalea Food. Feed every 3-4 weeks through September.
Spray camellias for tea scale with NEEM if temperatures are below 90° F. If temperatures are above 90° F. spray late evening.
Feed hibiscus every three or four weeks with Nitro-Phos or Nutri Star Hibiscus Food. This plant food can be used on gerbera daisies, bougainvillea, mandevilla and other tropical shrubs and vines.
MOTHER’S DAY reminder – MAY 13th. Look for our beautiful Endless Summer Hydrangea
Feed roses with ferti-lome Systemic Rose Fertilizer. Check for insects and spray for fungus. This fertilizer/insecticide is great for crape myrtles. Feed every 30 days.
Feed the lawn with a slow release nitrogen fertilizer, like Kingwood Garden Center’s Microlife Hybrid Fertilizer, a 20-0-5 slow release fertilizer. Texas A&M recommends a slow release fertilizer with zero phosphates for our lawns. New Jersey just banned phosphate for lawns. Will Texas be next?
Continue to plant annuals for summer color particularly vinca, portulaca, purslane, salvia, zinnia, begonia, coleus, impatiens, lantana, nicotiana, blue daze, celosia, copper plant, verbena, dusty miller, gomphrena and more.
Plant perennials such as; plumbago, sedum, coreopsis, gaillardia, lambs ear, penstemon, purple coneflower, pineapple sage, verbena and more.
Finish planting summer vegetable garden. Vegetables such as okra, peppers, beans, squash, melons, corn, cucumbers, and pumpkins (for Halloween) like the hot weather.
Don’t forget the 2nd Annual Tomato Contest in June
Avoid D.P.S. (Drought Panic Syndrome). We have been receiving 1 to 2 inches of water for the past five weeks. Established plants and lawns will do fine with that amount. New plantings and potted plants need a little more.
