It's often said that Nashvillians are hard to impress at a rock show. Nashville crowds are often prone to lifeless head-bobbing, or perhaps a little too much commentary on the band of the night. Everyone's a critic here.

That's why it was a breath of fresh air to be present at 12th and Porter Thursday night for The Future's album release show - nobody was busy being too cool, and everyone was moving their feet. The audience was almost half as lively as The Future's electrifying frontman, Adam Culver, who moves across the stage like James Brown tweaking on Four Loko.

Culver and his band mates - bassist Jordan Culver, guitarist Eric Sadowsky and the bespectacled, bowtied Bryan Feece - commanded the audience not by begging everyone to clap their hands, but with the sheer energy they projected during the entire duration of the show. Songs that fell somewhat flat on the band's newest album, Grow Young, suddenly rose to new heights. The Future knows how to put on a rock show.

They highlighted some of the best tracks from the album, including the haunting "Man of the People" (which was more rocking and less creepy in a live setting), "Don't You Dare" and "Come on Down," the album's closer. They also played a fantastic, soulful rendition of Sam Cooke's "Bring it on Home to Me," which they transitioned into a much less successful cover of Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come." The Future's set was short but effective, which was a blessing as they were the fourth and last band of the night.

The Future shared the staged with Oh No No, Stagolee, and Kink Ador, all out of Nashville. Oh No No were incredibly fun and offered some choice moments, but the real surprise of the night was Kink Ador and their ridiculously talented lead singer/bassist, Sharon Koltick. In two or three years' time, there's no reason that Kink Ador shouldn't be opening for a blockbuster band on tour. - Katherine Heriges

Kink Ador hits national stage

Kink Ador hits
Lafayette native Sharon Koltick and her rock band Kink Ador continue their climb to national prominence.

The trio played the Verge Music Festival last weekend in Milwaukee, which was headlined by Weezer, The Raveonettes, She & Him, Three Days Grace, AFI and Eagles of Death Metal.

Aside from the festival, Kink Ador also is playing many dates in support of the new release "The Shape of Life."
Kink Ador fans recently fueled the band’s Kickstarter.com account to completion, allowing them to self-release their latest, The Shape of Life. Kink Ador rewarded this generosity handsomely with a 10-cut disc of sonically rich and categorically diverse rock ’n’ roll just in time for those in need of summer jams. Sure, it’s silly, but I like to imagine this record was written inside a ragtop Camaro driven at top speed through outer space, searching for a wormhole back to 1977 with singer/bassist Sharon Koltik’s sultry howl serving as the metaphorical rocket fuel. Most of these tracks kick off with a deep and fuzzy 420-friendly groove, finding a comfy pocket somewhere between Queens of the Stone Age and early Heart. But they soon eschew the constraints of gravity with elements of jazz and ’60s psychedelia — which really make those previous references to space travel appropriate, right? Kink Ador celebrates their new release tonight at Mercy Lounge.

I recently got a call from my brother Corey, a drummer in town, telling me he was going to sit in for a song with a band called Kink Ador down at Mercy Lounge. Most, if not all, of Kink Ador call East Nashville home, and I always love checking out the local cheese.

My wife Ginger and I met up with Corey and his wife Jen across the river at the Mercy Lounge. The room was spaciously empty, and since I’m such a rebel, that made me happy. We were there early though, which allowed ample time for the place to fill up just enough to make you feel the energy of other people without having to fight for basic survival resources like oxygen, points of escape and elbow room at the bar.

Another reason the audience had a chance to grow was because the band got started a little late, creating a buzz of annoyance/anticipation that seems to be a prerequisite for any decent show these days.

East Nashville's own Kink Ador (Photo: Ray + Wendy)

Once the sound of the crowd murmuring became a sufficient hum, Kink Ador appeared from backstage. I was surprised to see that they are a trio. I guess I expected a troupe playing keyboards, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, a washtub bass, synthesizers, xylophones, a harmonica, a laptop, their iPhones and whatever other noisemakers people pile onto a stage these days. No, Kink Ador do it simply. They are a drummer, a guitarist and a bassist/singer. The guitarist and the bassist also played trumpets from time to time. Really cool.

Guitarist Andrew Sovine had a few tricks up his sleeve and seemed to play mostly textural riffs and patterns which allowed the guitar to have its own voice, ornamenting the rhythm section rather than sitting all over it and being just another thump in the beat. There were occasional, tastefully done guitar solos which followed melodic themes from the song. He played some beautiful sounding vintage instruments, though I can’t tell you what they are offhand. In addition to the electric guitar, he also played a lap slide. Whatever the instrument, Sovine was adept and capable on his instruments and knew how to translate his skill into emotive playing.

Sharon Koltick on trumpet (Photo: Ray + Wendy)

As far as the vocals go, it was pretty hard for me to hear what vocalist Sharon Koltick was saying. Whether it was due to the house mix, her pronunciation or our position in the room is something I don’t know. From what I could hear, there was a girlish poppiness in the melody, vocal delivery and stage presence. Koltick’s vocals sat in the rhythms well, danced above them when appropriate and supplied a unifying thread for the audience to lock onto. Every so often, Sovine would sing backup. Their voices might have blended well together in other circumstances, but in this case his voice was mixed louder and sounded clearer than hers, creating a feeling of insubordination and imbalance when he chimed in.

Koltick’s duties also included the bass guitar. I am always impressed by that feat – it’s like simultaneously being rain on the roof and a brontosaurus. The bass lines were a punky throb which clung pretty closely to the songs’ chordal triads and orbited the kick drum relatively tightly. There was some more melodic movement present in the riffish licks she threw in here and there.

The solidly pounding tempo, subtle accents and dynamics, and advanced cymbal technique left me impressed with Brad Naylor’s drumming throughout the set. His beats were designed to make us move and delivered with a restrained, focused intensity that made me wonder half-excitedly and half-fearfully what would happen if he were to let absolutely loose.

One of the benefits of being a trio is there is room to bring in other people for collaboration, and Kink Ador used that to their advantage. They brought up two unique female vocalists for a song each and my brother joined their drummer on the penultimate song to create an explosively percussive piece.

All in all, I would recommend seeing Kink Ador – their music was well played, and the mood was assertive yet fun. Not only will you be showing support for a talented group of Eastsiders, but you also might be pleasantly surprised. They definitely surprised me.

Kink Ador will play two benefit shows later this month: Light One Up for Kenya at The Basement on April 17, and the release party for the We Will Not Ignore EP to benefit Haiti at Exit/In on April 22. Sharon - The move to Nashville happened because I knew I wanted to make music and Nashville is a place I could afford to do it. And there’s a lot of rock bands doing really well being based out of Nashville.
Brad - And everyone who goes there is…they’re dreaming so hard and so there’s this dome of hope over the city because we’re all working so hard to make something happen so it’s just an awesomely inspiring city.
Sharon - And if you go by city mottos – they call it music city!

Katya - Who are some of your inspirations – musically or otherwise?

Sharon - Well you mentioned one before we began the interview which is Prince. Not so much stylistically but as an amazing performer who puts on a killer show every single night no matter what and that’s something we love to do and are inspired by. And The Red Hot Chili Peppers…The Yeah, Yeah Yeahs…
Brad - I think the spoken word: writers, poets and those who just want to do there thing and give it back.
Katya - What about writing the songs? How does that work?

Sharon – I come up with the structure, the lyrics, the melody and then I bring it to the guys. I have to have it as a complete thought or idea that I can defend and then let them hack away at it and then we polish it and it becomes a song. It really is collaborative but I start by steering it in a certain direction.
Brad - and then we steer her in another direction!

Katya - Are your songs based on your own life?

Sharon - We base them on a lot of things
Andrew - Class struggles of the Russian Oligarchy!
Sharon - Our song Animal is inspired by Toni Morrison’s book Beloved. The idea of freedom and finding your own path.

Katya - So you’re currently touring. How do you like it?

Andrew - We love it. We’ve all had day jobs and this is the best one so far.
Brad - When you go to a show and you feel that and are gone from your reality…and you leave and feel better…that positive energy that comes from being a part of that –that performance- that is what it’s about.
Katya - Do you feel like people in different areas have distinct energies or are the audiences kind of the same everywhere?

Andrew - I think everywhere we’ve played people have slightly different expectations. We’re sometimes playing with what seems like very random acts so you don’t know what the audience is expecting. But we’ve found that the more we play the more we realize that whether or not people have an idea about us by the end of the set we’ve won them over. Like we were in Chicago a few weeks ago and there was this man…this giant tree of a man that could break you in half and we thought whoa this is gonna be a tough crowd but by halfway in the set he was dancing his ass off. And that’s just an example…it’s not anything we know how to do, it’s just there’s this connection between the 3 of us that people are drawn to –they see how much fun we have and they can’t help but smile.

Katya - It’s infectious!

Andrew - Yeah, like swine flu! (laughter)
Brad - It’s fun! Somebody said to me you know I don’t know what it is about it – I don’t know what I’m gonna hear but I know I’m gonna have fun.

Katya - So you have an album out called Animal. How would you describe it?

Sharon - The EP "I Am Animal" is a collection of songs that really define the Kink Ador sound. Especially the song ' Animal.' The grit of the guitar sounds, the primal rawness of the bass and drums, and the journey that is happening in the lyrics create a unique tension that defines the sound of the band. We tried to go for fresh sounding rock and roll on the record, and i think we have achieved that.

Katya - And where can people get it?

Sharon - Get it off of iTunes or directly from us on the Kink Ador website.

Katya - Okay, that's it. Thanks guys!
We got together at 12th & Porter to watch a local band play, and just really struck a chord with each other and started making music after that," revealed Kiltick when I spoke with her recently.

If you're just not hip to Nashville's Kink Ador, you might think it's a person, rather than an rockin' foursome, and according to an interview posted by lead singer and founding member, Sharon Kiltick, that's really not so far fetched. In the video interview posted on the band's YouTube page, Sharon explains the origins of the name. It seems that she was reading Ada or Ador: A Family Chronicle by Russian novelist, Vladimir Nabokov. "It's a book about family dynamics, sex, and love and everything else and I just loved how he plays with words and language. I wanted a name that sounded cool that sounded like the name of a person. To me the band is a whole other thing beyond any one person, so I wanted a type of first name and last name," explained Sharon. She landed on the name Kink Ador, and offered further reasons when she expanded on the subject by adding, "Adore what's not normal, what's on the fringe, what's different, what's sexy and dangerous and I just thought Kink Ador fit that."

The juxtaposition of the group goes beyond the name. Even Sharon herself is a bit of a conundrum, with her blonde hair, blue eyes and and relaxed off-stage persona. Once she steps on stage to front the band, she morphs into an indie hybrid, whose sound is reminiscent of Debbie Harry circa 1986's Rockbird with a touch of early No Doubt.

Even the band's website alludes to the recurring duality. They cleverly boast both a Hollywood Version of their bio, as well as a Tabloid Version. Koltick had this to say when I mentioned the apparent duality, "I like that you picked on the duality of the name and of the band. Kink Ador is just that, you have the kinkiness of being an artist discovering the depths of life and expression, and also having a desire to just have fun, and make love out of life. We try to do both in our music."

The band's official site continues to delve into the double-edge of Kink Ador by also likening their two guitarist to two different forms of currency. "The guitar players in the band have been through a little shuffling, but now we have Andrew Sovine and Steve Cunningham as members of the band." happily reports Koltick.

Of the bands music, Koltick is quick to classify their sound as rock, but just as quickly clarifies what sets them apart from the sea of indie rockers currently populating Nashville and any other major metropolitan area, "Our songs sound different than other rock bands because of the way we write. All the songs are built from the ground up; I write everything on the bass guitar, and build the melodies around that. Then I take the song to Brad and we arrange the song. Then the last element is always the guitar." She drives her point home with, "I think this focus on building the groove first, sets our music apart. Most band will write from guitar."

When asked to site the band's influences, Sharon sites, "Funky rockers like TV On the Radio, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Brazilian Girls." Side Note: TV On the Radio is one of my favorites. Check out the NY-based art rockers' Dear Science CD, in particular, the single Dancing Choose.

As for Kink Ador, be sure to check out their show tonight at The Rutledge to get familiar with Sharon, Andrew, Steve and Brad, and to hear them perform songs from their upcoming EP, I Am Animal, dropping July 16. Among the tracks on Kink Ador's playlist, the rockin' Animal, Baby You're No Fun Anymore, which exemplifies the aforementioned juxtaposition with a lyrical lament of a flatlining relationship backed by a beat that could easily accompany a traditional latin dance track. Gone, Gone, Gone is another track featured on the Animal EP. Again, the lyrics tell the tale of yet another love gone wrong, but this time the feel is more traditional indie rock and could easily be an old Patty Smyth track.

Kink Ador will be joining Cory Lamb and Mother Father tonight at The Rutledge (410 4th Ave. South near Downtown Nashville). Music is set to begin at 7:00p.m., with Kink Ador taking the stage at 8:45 p.m. The Rutledge is an 18 and up music venue and cover for tonight's show is $5.
East Nashvillians Pale Blue Dot have earned acclaim for gritty and impassioned music that’s been described variously as garage-folk, “Neil Young with the wit and deviance of The Kinks,” and a Southern Fleetwood Mac (mostly because bandmates Scott and Kim Collins are married). Meanwhile, Kink Ador’s website compares them to Talking Heads and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, with a frontwoman “like Sting from The Police, except likable.” (Another enlightened critic, at CDBaby, calls them “quasi-Britpop”—which makes sense, sort of.) But the welter of hyphenated genres and “Belle and Sebastian-meet-Black Flag”-style band comparisons can get confusing. So I’ll defer to a music-fan acquaintance who vouched for the bands’ appeal in simpler terms: “They’re just kinda, like, good, in a way that I don’t hate it.”
Fri., July 3, 8 p.m., 2009

Meet Kink Ador, by Angie Bianchi of the Nashville Indie Music Examiner

Meet Kink Ador
June 29, 2009 by Angie Bianchi of the Nashville Indie Music Examiner

I couldn’t find a bio for Kink Ador anywhere. Because they don’t have one! So, upon meeting the three core band members for coffee and discussion, we decided now was the time to write one. Here goes:

Lead singer and bassist Sharon Koltick had been stirring over the idea of starting a band since before she moved to Nashville. She met drummer Brad Naylor at a show one night at 12th & Porter, and they mutually decided the time to start that band was at hand. Over the course of the next year, they tried different elements, and different guitarists, trying to find the right sound for their brainchild, called Kink Ador. Last fall they came to realize that Steve Cunningham, who they had found on Craigslist, was the guitarist they’d been looking for. Along with an additional guitarist, and occasionally a sax player, the current line up of Kink Ador was set.

The name is another story in itself, of course. Koltick insisted that no one band member’s name be used in the band name. She thought the word “troubadour” accurately described the life of a musician, but it just wasn’t sexy and kinky enough. Hence, Kink Ador.

The band has been busy working on their upcoming EP, due out July 16th, called I Am Animal. They had thought about only releasing it digitally, but are proud that they decided to have actual CDs made for their shows. Koltick, Naylor, and Cunningham wrote the tracks together, each bringing their own unique talents to the process. Naylor describes that process like this:

"Sharon Koltick is the catalyst thrower, and then I catch the ideas and put them in the right places."

Koltick adds:

"And Steve has all this knowledge of music theory and melody…that brings crazy grooves."

The title track, I Am Animal, is about the journey from slavery (physical or mental) to freedom. They describe it as bringing together blues with dirty rock guitar, funky tribal percussion, and soulful horns. A tall order, which sets the bar high for the rest of the tracks on the EP. Guest musicians on the EP include Kenny Olsen (Kid Rock), Scotty Huff, Michael Esser, and Danny White.

Fans and friends can hear Kink Ador’s new songs live this week, when they play Friday night at the Basement. The lineup for the night will include fellow local acts Maureen Murphy, Ernest Chapman, Brandi Sellerz, and band Pale Blue Dots.

Kink Ador’s set itself promises lots of excitement, with guest percussionists and vocalists, and even some spoken word segments. There is also a rumor that Steve Cunningham may dress up like Freddie Mercury… but at the very least, he’s looking forward to being able to play from the audience on his wireless guitar.

Drummer Brad Naylor remembers the Basement being the second venue he ever visited in Nashville, and he feels he’s “made it” every time he can play there and fill the place. The last “Kink Ador & Friends” was a sell-out success, so show up early and get a good spot for this Friday’s fun!

What: Day Before the Big Bang with Kink Ador & Friends
When: Friday, July 3rd. Sharon Koltick, Brad Naylor, Steve Cunningham, and Andrew Sovine – collectively known as the Nashville rock band, Kink Ador – have been tearing it up around town for some time now. Occasionally, they’ll add saxophonist Ray Warfield to the lineup, when they need some soul.

Their new EP, ”I Am Animal” – featuring legendary guitarist Kenny Olson - drops July 16th, ‘09, and is available for pre-order now. See more photos at nashvillescene.com.

We've heard a lot of metaphors about female independence lately—80 million cracks in the glass ceiling, something about a pit bull with lipstick—and it's within this climate that the New York-based Girls Rock & Girls Rule Tour stopped at 3rd and Lindsley on Wednesday night. Consisting of five female-fronted bands plus a local band or two at every stop, the tour was nothing if not ambitious. Proceeds from the tour benefit the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, essentially the NYC version of Murfreesboro's Southern Girls Rock 'n' Roll Camp in which campers are taught to play instruments, write songs and be awesome. The various sponsorships, freebee swag and giveaways at the 3rd and Lindsley stop proved that these are some girls who know how to get shit done. Unfortunately, not many people showed up.

But we did. Musically, Joan Jett was the patron saint of Girls Rock & Girls Rule, with each of the tour's core bands owing a debt to the Blackhearts' influence. Loki the Grump set the tone for the night, which was that members of each band were going to pop up on stage during the other bands' sets a bunch. The opening set didn't particularly move us, but the guitarist happened to be a badass violinist. While the Grump focused on silliness, G-Spot addressed horniness head-on. Their best songs covered the poppier stylings of X and late Pylon, even if some of the quasi-funk left too much of a Red Hot Chili Peppers taste in our mouths.

Two local bands were chosen to share the bill, the first being ShotgunDiary, whose loud/soft Evanescence-styled modern rock would probably sound right at home on not just 102.9 The Buzz, but any of the many The Buzzes found throughout the country. We aren't saying the same for our earholes. Kink Ador's nimble almost-jazz ventured a little close to jam band for our comfort, but the sax and keys laden combo had the tightest sound and sharpest songwriting of the night, with lead singer and bassist Sharon Koltick reminding us of a female Sting except, you know, likable.

We caught most of Marisa Mini & Her Mojo's set of “hey, we're punk rock”-punk rock, which wasn't bad at all, but after five bands we didn't have the stamina for two more. After listening to some recordings by America's Sweethearts, we might be a little sorry we missed them. Five hours at 3rd and Lindsley on a Wednesday night proved to be a little too demanding.
Category: The Spin

MTSU drive time radio interview

Brad and Sharon did an on air interview with Amanda at MSTU drive time show 10/07/08.

WRVU radio live performance and interview on the Pajama Bar

Kink Ador was featured on WRVU Nashville Friday Night August 15th, 2008 on the show "The Pajama Bar." The band performed two songs live, and 4 tracks from the EP were played. After picking up a few new musicians, Koltick's band is starting to make a buzz thanks to high profile appearances on the Muzik Mafia jam sessions started by country music superstars Big and Rich. Koltick's sound is anything but country, though. The band has a 1980s rock sound influenced by the likes of Blondie and The Police. Former bassist in Lafayette bands Feasible, The Malcontents and Batalyst, Koltick sings and plays bass in Kink Ador, too, and she will return to Indiana with a gig at 9 p.m. Saturday at Radio Radio, 1117 E. I think it was just through the grapevine. We knew some people and they invited us to jam. ... It's really casual. Around 10:30 and 11 p.m., people get on-stage and start playing. One of the times we played, Futureman of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones was just hanging around. Our first time there, it was 1 a.m. when we finally got called to play. We were standing on the side of the stage and they bring you up with 10 other people on-stage playing along. In Nashville, they look at you and they know what to play next. Then we got invited to play San Francisco and we jammed at a jazz club there.

3 How did your music style go over in Nashville?

It's actually really cool because there's a community of indie artists here right now. It's a strong scene. I don't have to even see country if I don't want to. As far as the rock scene, it's really strong here. I can't complain.

4 What are your thoughts on playing Indiana again?

I'm really excited about it. It's just a different atmosphere. Everyone in Nashville is a musician and the people who go to shows are musicians. They do not get excited about shows and just sit there with their arms crossed and analyze you. I can't wait to play shows in Indiana.

5 When are you going to play Lafayette?

Hopefully really soon. I tried to add it to a tour this summer. Hopefully we'll play there in the fall. We're going to try to get more shows and hire a booking agent.

On the Net: www.kinkador.com

Fox News ThePalestra.com Gig Guide

               Kink Ador on Fox News.com
Kink Ador's show tonight at the Basement was featured on ThePalestra.com Gig Guide on Foxnews.com! Who do I need to talk to about that? cheers!
sharon

video gig guide

Critic's Pick Nashville Scene week of 2_14_2008

Kink Ador is a Critic's Pick this week in the Nashville Scene for their participation in the first BEAT show. In an effort to remedy this deficiency, yet another local music collective has crawled out of the woodwork—this one calls itself BEAT. Aspiring to build a thriving community of electro-oriented rock ’n’ rollers, BEAT hopes to bridge the gap between synthetic and organic music. Their first event is scheduled for Thursday night and features funky white kids Kink Ador, rock-heavy hip-hoppers Knapsack Heroes, Quiet Entertainer and DJs Viper, Melator and Kidsmeal. 9 p.m. at Exit/In —SETH GRAVES

link to publication: Nashville Scene Our Critics Picks 02/14/2008

The Big Story Kink Ador

The Big Story
Cincinnati City Beat
Posted 09/26/2007

CRITIC'S PICK: Kink Ador (Nashville, TN)Indie Rock
Posted 09/26/2007

Verbatim:

If you think Nashville is all flannel and jeans and cowboy hats and pedal steel and Nudie suits, you've got delusions only the sweet stink of therapy could resolve. Nashville also has an edgy Indie Pop scene, of which Kink Ador is an integral element. From massive bass grooves to violin bows sawing across guitar strings to insistent synth pulses, Kink Ador exposes the quirky white underbelly of Music City.

Dig It: The band we'd send to Iceland in a musical foreign exchange program involving Sigur Ros. Having already garnered notice in the Indianapolis area for her band Kink Ador, Koltick moved to Nashville a year ago and promptly assembled a new edition of the group, which includes guitarist and violinist John Zambricki, keyboardist Wade Van Orman and drummer Brad Naylor. They've been writing, and lately have been recording with producers Jack Clement and Mo Sweeney at Clement's famed Cowboy Arms Hotel and Recording Spa. Clement says he plans to sit in with the band at a show later this summer, and Kink Ador has cut a new-wave version of Allen Reynolds' "Ready for the Times to Get Better," a 1978 country hit for Crystal Gayle, which ought to suit Cowboy Jack's aesthetic just fine.
