Halloween Costume: Part III

For Part 3 of my homemade halloween costume...I was a Rag Doll this year. I used remnants from my own sewing projects and from the remnant bin. Total cost of costume: about $5 and 15 hours of work.

My Halloween Costume was inspired by several people. First, I'd seen Natty Boho's Etsy store and fell in love with all of the layers of coordinating fabrics. Several days after I'd seen her creations for the first time, one of my coworkers brought in a rag quilt that she'd made with lessons. I saw the quilt and liked the idea of the raggedy ends. I saw these two styles combine in my head and potentially re-create a look from Victor Hugo's Les Miserables. To make the costume seem poor, I decided to use only scaps from other projects and not buy any new materials. This is really adding to the patchwork quality.

Halloween Costume Part 2

Part 2 of my Halloween Costume...it's starting to come together! This is a fitted "sundress" pattern. I'm trying to decide if I want to add a bustle or draping to the skirt for more body. At this point in time I may have to wait until the first "fitting" to decide. I want to look raggedy, but not chunky....any suggestions?

You know, I never thought of posting photos throughout the design process, but I think I might. It would be fun to look back on the first pictures after the entire costume is done. I plan to continue working on the dress this weekend.

I've just started making my first Halloween Costume. I'm going to be a rag doll. I've accumulated so many scraps through my other sewing project and the idea just came to me when one of my friends showed me a rag quilt that she had made. I'm reading Les Miserables now and I'm hoping it will end up a bit tattered and worn looking, similar to what I imagine Fantine's clothes would look like. I'm starting with a dress pattern that I already know, but I'm putting the seams on the outside rather than the inside. I also plan to "rag" the entire dress and wash it a few times to wear it out a bit. I suppose it doesn't matter how it turns out if I call myself a rag doll, but I'd like it to be "perfect". I will post pics later, but I'm pretty sure that I won't finish until just before Halloween.

Sorry I haven't blogged lately. I started a new job in May and it's been consuming ALL of my time. But, I've got the hang of things now and am starting to get my personal life back. That means more blogging, more cards and more sewing.

I just started my Halloween costume last weekend and today I made 3 designs of Christmas/Holiday cards for the store. The new items will be uploaded next weekend.

This weekend I also took the time to check out the Borders clearance---I'm so sad they're closing down. I worry that this is the beginning of the end of print books as we know them. Looks like everythings turning into electronic books to be read off the Kindle and others like it. I hope I'm wrong. I hope online shopping is to blame for this travesty. Only time will tell.

Checked out the new Stampin' Up! Idea Book on Friday night. What a great surprise to recieve in the mail. I love crafting catalogs! I want so much of the new catalog--everytime I turned the page I had about 10 new ideas. Can't beat that!

*Each of these cards were inspired by a "Wild About You" card that I made when I was new to stamping. The design is very basic, but offsets most occasions beautifully.
^This card was inspired by a card my friend Megan taught me how to make years ago.The design is hers, but the stamps used are completely different in this one. I think this design works wonders for Love and Friendship cards as it's fun and lighthearted.

This Engagement Card is designed to look like a peek into the bridal boutique's fitting room. It has pull tabs that allow you to open the Curtain that says "Celebrate" to see a simple Wedding gown in front of a mirror.

Two wedding cake cards, one elegant Gray card with Silver-Glitter and Black Ribbon embellished cake and the other sweet card with a blue ribbon and pearl embellished cake have also been added to the lineup.

My best friends's recent engagement has left me needing to make a Happy Engagement card and maybe a new Happy Wedding card or two. Using my friend as inspiration, I've decided to break out the glitter, ribbon and bling. The card needs to represent not only the impending wedding, but also her style. Does anyone Sew?

I started sewing last year after I got hooked on Project Runway. The contestant made it look so easy to have custom made and tailored clothes. So, I've been taking lessons, because it turns out to be a lot harder than they make it look on TV. I've been working on this jacket for over one month now. I'm making a suit jacket with a matching pencil skirt. I got to the lesson after spending 3 hours the other day sewing the sleeves together and pressing the hems only to realize under the bright flourecent lights that I had sewn both the sleeves so the seams were on the outside of the jacket. So depressing. What's more upsetting about this? It's my most common mistake. It's so silly I don't know how I do it, but man, it wastes a LOT of time! Anyone else have this problem?

Graduation Cards & Announcements!

I never had Graduation Announcements because I felt they were plain and overpriced. So, when creating announcements for kireinacards, I thought of what I would have bought for my graduations. It definitely had to be colorful and 3D. I'm such a sucker for 3D. So, I made a Graduation Cap by hand with Embroidery Thread, a Brad and paper. I then made it look 3D by attaching it to my card with dimensional adhesive. I made a hand-rolled diploma for the front of the card too. I could have left the background of the card plain, but I really liked this diamond shaped texture plate. It reminds me of argyle knee high socks and sports jerseys. To tie it all together, I chose to make the cards pictured in color combinations that are popular in sports uniforms. Hope you like them!
