PSE Ratings- Follow Up

My recent PSE post really hit a nerve for a lot of you. It's always fun to see what gets you talking!

First, you should know that we have found someone with consistently great report cards from PSE. Not just great, Tom of the Kirkland Highlands is typically #3 out of 100. Big round of applause to Tom!! I am amazed and impressed. So now we know it is possible. But how, you ask? Here's what Tom had to share with us:

"Until last fall my daughter Hannah and I lived in the Kirkland Highlands in a 1700sf 2 story daylight basemnent house built in 1969 with 4 bedrooms (small) and 1.75 bathrooms. The house has GREAT passive solar, which I believe really helps with keeping it warm in the winter, even on our dark days. We keep the programmable thermostat low at night (59) and about 64 when we are here. We have a tankless gas water heater, a gas furnace, and double pane windows. I think it also helps that a part of the house is below grade (4') so that helps hold in the heat and keeps it cool.My daughter has since moved away to college, and I haven't received a report in awhile. Hope this helps, and good luck motivating your kids - they like to see the improvement and we found the quarterly reports to be a good incentive (plus we kept trying to move up to # 1)."

I have since shared our report with our children so I can get them on board. Long hot showers and leaving lights on are the vices we need to break them from along with throwing every item of clothing in the laundry even if it's been worn for 15 minutes. I cannot turn my thermostat down to 59 or even 64 because I'm pretty sure that frozen nipple replacement surgery for a family of 5 is more expensive than power. But we are motivated to get a better report card next time.

I also received an official response from PSE- feel free to comment away- sounds like they are listening... Here is what they had to say:

I wanted to thank you for starting a healthy conversation about energy use in people’s homes. This is one of the fundamental reasons why we have started experimenting with these private mailers to our customers…. To draw out their reactions, and perhaps spur some persistent action inside homes to lower energy bills especially in these winter months

We love having customers like you and your readers who take such extraordinary measures to safeguard our energy future, and can serve as evangelists to get us all using energy more efficiently. Regrettably, there is a large percentage of our customers who have yet to get on the bandwagon, and we need to turn them into believers as well.

We are taking a lot of customer comments on these mailers into account during this experiment, and we are learning at lot about how our customers respond to a bit of peer pressure when it comes to making choices about how to use energy. We realize that the comparisons aren’t necessarily apples to apples, but at least there is enough relative comparison to a radius of your neighbors --- so that it might trigger some quick attention on your family’s habits, or at the very least, make “energy efficient” top of mind for next equipment purchase you make.

For the comparisons, admittedly we don’t know everything about your home, occupants, or household activities. The information we have was received from county records and PSE account information. This includes home type, size, heating fuel source, and location. This information is sometimes incorrect because the county records aren’t always up-to-date. To assure the most accurate comparison, you can update your info by visiting www.psereports.com. This might correct any inconsistencies that you feel are preventing you from a proper comparison. You are always free to opt out too. But, we hope you don’t.

Ravenna Gardens Kirkland: CLOSED

Bummer. I always really liked Ravenna Gardens but admittedly forgot to go in there often enough. Don't fret, they're still in University Village. When I checked in the window at Park Place, there were some really cute red clearance items inside, but I called and they already had their sale and the doors are CLOSED. boo. ~j

First I want to say thank you for all of the comments and emails I have received on my recent PSE post. I am now able to sleep at night knowing I am not the only person getting these nasty report cards from the power company. The PSE marketing dept must have some anger mgmt issues. Apparently they compare you to 100 neighbors with proximity and a home size similar to yours. Yet nobody has stepped forward as getting a positive report. If you are up for it, I heard that PSE provides a free service of coming to your home and checking where you may be able to be more efficient in your energy usage (call the number on your bill). Might want to wait til they are done getting everyone's power restored from the storms and wind first. They have some tips on their site too.

Why is PSE always picking on me?

It can't just be me. So I'm throwing this out there at the risk of being a bad example because I am curious if EVERYONE gets that same letter from Puget Sound Energy declaring that they are terrible awful energy wasters. Every quarter I dread opening the "home energy report" that tells me that I use 49% more energy than my neighbors, which is then illustrated in colored bar graphs and breakdowns by electricity and natural gas. I also apparently used 74% more energy than my neighbors in the past 12 months- ack- shoot me now. Is this true?

Do they have to start name-calling?? PSE tells me here's what the "energy efficient" neighbors use, "all neighbors" use and then "YOU." It really is bold and capitalized like that so you feel like someone is pointing a finger at your nose. REALLY?! Although we are a family of 5 which means lots of laundry and dishes, we are also energy conscious (turning lights out, only running full loads, etc) and our recently remodeled and relatively small home has newer/energy efficient components. We're good people- we recycle and do our best to lessen our environmental footprint. But I think PSE keeps us on their whipping board. Does anyone out there get a letter saying, "you are doing a fantastic job conserving energy! Way to go!" ?? I need to know. Maybe my kids are secretly sucking up energy when I'm not looking (we know they steal mine).

Staying Safe under all this Snow..

This storm is going to kill me one way or another. If I don't freeze to death and I don't inhale carbon monoxide from a grill or generator and I don't get washed away by the impending flooding, I will surly go INSANE having my entire family in this house for 4 days straight. How do home schoolers do it?!? I am sending up some rescue flares hoping a passing flight to Hawaii might see my signal and scoop me up.

Enough banter. This is serous. Good news is the temp should go up tomorrow (43ish) and this all turns to rain. Here's the forecast. Bummer is there is an area flood watch in effect through Saturday. Some homes have lost power- many due to downed trees and power lines from all the heavy snow. Currently, there are 98 homes in Kirkland without power.

And there are important messages that important people and agencies want you to know that are important to your safety...please read...very important..

City of Kirkland:

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Snowy and icy road conditions continue throughout the City of Kirkland. City crews have removed fallen trees on several roads. According to the National Weather Service, western Washington will continue to see a “mixed bag of wintry weather tonight with freezing rain.” Weathers conditions are expected to turn to rain by Friday, January 20, 2012; with temperatures remaining above freezing. For current weather conditions visit the National Weather Service website at www.weather.gov/seattle.

Road and Sidewalk Maintenance; Road Closures
City maintenance crews are responding to a downed tree on Juanita Drive at approximately NE 137th Place.

The following roads remain closed
• NE 116th Street from 98th Avenue NE to 104th Avenue NE.
• NE 52nd Street between Lake Washington Boulevard and 108th Avenue.
• NE 97th Street between 112th Avenue NE and 110th Avenue NE.
• 5th Avenue South between Lake Street South and State Street South.
• 5th Place between 15th Avenue and 18th Avenue.
• NE 104th Street between 113th Court NE and 111th Avenue NE.
• Several steep slope roads are currently closed; including the side streets off Market Street from 10th Avenue north to 19th Avenue.
• 13800 block of Holmes Point Drive is closed due to a fallen tree in the roadway.

Structural Damage Reports
Residents or businesses that experience structural damage on their property, should call the Kirkland Building Department during business hours at 425-587-3600 and ask to speak to a plans examiner to arrange for an inspection. Staff will work to perform inspections and issue emergency permits for repairs as quickly as possible.

Citizens’ Help Needed
• Residents are asked to call 9-1-1 for life emergencies only. Calling 911 for information delays emergency calls from being answered and can delay help. These delays for emergency calls can have devastating effects on those most in need.
• Residents and businesses are encouraged to be prepared for flooding and can find preparedness information at www.takewinterbystorm.org
• Be aware of the potential of carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous and odorless gas that cannot be seen or smelled and that can kill a person in minutes. Carbon monoxide is produced whenever any fuel such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood, or charcoal is burned. During power outages, carbon monoxide poisonings can happen when people bring charcoal grills and barbecue units into the home for heat and cooking. Carbon monoxide poisoning can also occur when generators or propane heaters are used indoors or in areas without sufficient ventilation. For prevention information, go to the State Department of Health website at www.doh.wa.gov and select “Winter Weather.”
• To report fallen trees in the roadway, call the Public Works Maintenance Line at 425-587-3900 (24 hours).
• To report a fallen power line or power outage, call Puget Sound Energy at 1-888-225-5773.
• Property owners adjacent to sidewalks are responsible for keeping them clear of snow and debris.
• Property owners are asked to keep storm drains clear of snow and debris to allow for water to properly drain, reducing flooding.
• Residents should prepare for possible local flooding as warming temperatures cause the snow to melt.

Carbon monoxide warnings

Carbon monoxide poisoning can kill you. Carbon monoxide gas comes from burning fuels such as gasoline, propane, oil, kerosene, natural gas, coal or wood. You can’t see or smell it.

Prevent poisoning from carbon monoxide:

Only use a generator outdoors and far from open windows and vents
Never use a generator or portable propane heater indoors, in garages or carports
Never cook or heat inside on a charcoal or gas grill.

Carbon monoxide poisoning can happen suddenly and without warning. Physical symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning may include splitting headache, nausea and vomiting, and lethargy and fatigue.

If you believe you could be experiencing carbon monoxide poisoning, get fresh air immediately. Call for medical help from a neighbor's home. The Fire Department will tell you when it is safe to reenter the home.

Staying warm indoors safely

If you have a power outage, use safe ways to stay warm:

Find places where you can go to get warm, such as the home of friends and family whose homes have power. Many cities have opened centers where people can go during the day to stay warm. Center locations can be found at http://www.kingcounty.gov/safety/prepare
Wear several layers of light weight, warm clothing rather than one layer of heavy clothing. Wear hats, mittens, and blankets indoors.
Close curtains and cover windows and doors with blankets. Everyone should try to stay together in one room, with the door closed, to keep in body heat.

Help others

Warn others about carbon monoxide poisoning. Share the information with neighbors, friends, family and community groups.
Check on family, friends, and neighbors, especially if they are elderly or if you think their power might be out.
If you know someone who has lost electricity, invite them to your home to stay warm.

Food Safety

If power goes out where you live, keep food safe by keeping the doors closed on your refrigerators and freezers as much as possible. A full freezer can stay at freezing temperatures about two days; a half-full freezer about 1 day. Potentially hazardous foods, like meat and fish, should be discarded if thawed and warmer than 41 degrees F

Kirkland Family Raises Funds for FSH Research

Terry Colella has lived in the same Kirkland home since 1980. But in 2004, everything changed when her son, Brian, was diagnosed with FSH (Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy) and they turned from your typical Kirkland family looking forward to college and grandchildren, into one of fundraisers. What they discovered was that very few researchers were studying this condition due to lack of funds and its complexity. This family does not sit and ponder. Now they head up a non-profit charity, Friends of FSH Research, and raise money for research.

They have raised more than $1.5M from their home-based charity with a volunteer crew. Today, researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Research Center and the University of WA are leaders in FSH research and are working in collaboration with researchers in the Netherlands and Rochester, NY as a result of their funding and support.

Please consider joining the Colellas for the 8th annual gala auction event to benefit FSH on January 28th at 5pm/Bellevue Hyatt. Juanita Village: Frozen Yogurt Twins Arriving Soon

This must be a closet eaters dream! Two new frozen yogurt places are "opening soon" in Juanita Village. Signs have gone up recently for Cherry de Pon (next to Noppakao) and Chilly Wave Yogurt (near Bala Yoga). It appears that Cherry is opening this spring and Chilly is opening in a few weeks. Isn't that cute... Cherry and Chilly? Like twins separated at birth. Both appear to be a concept with self-serve frozen yogurt flavors that you can add a fun array of toppings to. And- fantastic-they are walking distance from our house which could prove to be problematic during the summer months. That's all I know right now- comment below if you have some SCOOP. :-) j

Speaking of shorelines, here are a few photos from the Polar Plunge on Sunday. The water and the air were both in the 50's so it was more like a springtime dip. Lots of takers this year, my dear fair weathered friends. You could tell by everyone's smiles as they WALKED out of the water....no screams or running or ghastly faces of shocking electric cold. It's still a good cleanse and a fun way to start the new year with some good luck (at least that's what I told my friend Christi to convince her to do it and she believed me). :-)

It's a Beautiful Day for a Plunge: Kirkland 2012

This level of crazy doesn't care about the weather. The tradition of running into a freezing cold body of water to ring in the New Year is something you have to experience for yourself to understand it. You don't need skills or even brains...just a whole lot of heart and maybe a few friends to help nudge you along. It's exhilarating!

Bock bock bock-don't be a chicken! New Year's Day - this Sunday, at 1pm masses of plungers will converge on Marina Park in Kirkland. These renegades have no concern that this is no longer an organized event, they are thrill seekers that cannot be stopped. Some are even in costume and rush all over Seattle/Eastside doing as many plunges as they can squeeze in for the day. Not even the fruit cakes they ate over the holidays will slow them down from charging into the 47 degree waters. It's just a quick dip- then off for some soup, coffee and a huddle near the bonfire.

I just surveyed my family to see who's participating. We're 3 for 5: One 39 year old that's more scared to put her bathing suit on than get in the water. One 8 year old that did it last year and is grinning ear to ear to do it again. And a 6 year old first timer that I suspect will make it to his knees and run back to his bockbock chicken Daddy and sister (who tried it last yr). But at least he's man enough to try.

Get there a little early so you have time to park and situate your towel and warm clothes for when you get out. Water shoes help too. Will we see YOU there?????

My Exit Interview with Bill Vadino

Bill Vadino has stepped down as the Executive Director for the Kirkland Chamber of Commerce and Kirkland Downtown Association (KDA). He will be moving on to become the Show Director for the Kirkland Concours d'Elegance. He also has another mysterious Eastside consulting gig in the works which he will be announcing soon. So, before Bill pushes out on his sleigh, I had a few questions and they went something like this... (I'm in bold)

Pressing questions...Yes or No..

Is parking a problem in Kirkland? "Can you hold for a second? I am looking for a parking space"

Will the Antique Mall be there forever? "No--I just told Marilyn Dillard there will be a Santa Claus."

Are there too many spas and salons downtown? "Oh--are those all the places between the restaurants, coffee shops and consignment clothes stores?"

Is that you that dresses up the cow statue on Central every holiday? "I thought it was you and your kids--or PETA"

Too many political floats in the 4th of July parade? "Politicians in the parade? I am shocked, shocked..."

Hard to believe, but not everyone in Kirkland knows Bill Vadino, Director of the KDA and Kirkland Chamber of Commerce. Tell us what the heck that means in 3 sentences or less.

"Well the Chamber is a membership organization of businesses that believe that "what is good for neighbors is good for business" by making Kirkland a great place to work, live and play. Most importantly for me aside from the networking events, public policy advocacy, business assistance and downtown/community events is the community service aspect getting neighbors and business folks (sometimes to volunteer to help the hungry, homeless, and those who need medical care. The Kirkland Concours was (at least for me) the piece de resistance with it generating 1.5 million for uncompensated medical care for children over the last 9 years.

-Where are you scurrying off to and why?

"Well, I have four tasks and I am keeping two, shedding two and adding one. After 10 years (combined) I will be leaving the Chamber and Downtown Association to focus on my two other tasks--the Kirkland Concours which, while is planned by volunteers here in Kirkland and on the eastside, will be at the new LeMay America's Car Museum in Tacoma as well as my "friends and family." Another exciting position on the eastside will be announced eventually which I am looking forward to as well. Good news is that I will be around as many of my friends are here"

-Tell me why you think Kirkland is Super Cool. And what would make it even cooler.

"It's the people and their volunteerism linked with the small town Mayberry with enough Peyton Place to keep things interesting. What would be even cooler is to have a foundation that helps fund all of our community organizations from those who help the needy as well as the arts and event organizations."

-Favorite event in Kirkland? (tough to pick one, I know)

Well...now that the Kirkland Concours is moving and I don't have to be "Switzerland" anymore I would say Summerfest and Moss Bay Days which may return in a new incarnation next summer.

-Who will (try to) fill your shoes? Still looking for candidates? What unique skills are required besides looking snappy in a suit and having the balance to hang off of ladders while hanging holiday decorations? (photo)

"Bond, James Bond. With all his stunt work as the new Bond, Daniel Craig would be perfect on the ladders. Or Charles Durning as the governor in the "Little W****house in Texas ("oh I like to dance the little side step...now you see me now you don’t) for all the moments when my successor tries to please all he people all the time. Most of what happens will continue in exemplary fashion because of all the volunteers that have enabled success since 1935. Are you available?"

-If it was your last meal in Kirkland, where would you go?

"I would be a like a hobbit and have six meals (two breakfasts, lunches and dinners) so George's, Hectors, Sasi's, Bin, Crab Cracker, of course Trellis. And dessert at Sweet Cakes."

I have two new friends. Their names are Regan and Marty Montano and they own the new "Life is Good, Genuine Neighborhood Shoppe" store at 125 Lake St S (Romy's old spot). How we met is a perfect example of who they are and what their shop is about. I was walking down Lake Street and passed a woman on the sidewalk who looked me in the eye, gave me a big friendly smile and said hello. So I instinctively did so in return and thought to myself, "huh, she's in a good mood."

Fast-forward 30 minutes and I had decided to walk into "Life is Good" for the first time. I met Marty when I walked in the door and just as he's telling me about how the concept is to 'keep it simple' and 'spread optimism' and be 'happy with what you have' while sharing good vibes..........out from the back room walks his wife, Regan, the incredibly friendly stranger I had just encountered. We instantly recognized each other and got chatting. I love the story about how the company got started-very funny, it's a quick read here.

Regan and Marty are so likable and down to earth you just want to hug 'em. They have never been in retail before and with two boys away at college, they were looking for something new to do. Marty was an accountant and Regan a nanny. They have always loved the brand and Kirkland so everything just fell in place for them at lightning speed. They seem to be enjoying their location, "You meet the cutest people," Regan gushed about Kirkland. There is something for everyone in this store- men, women, kids, babies, even dogs! Brightly colored pj's, fun socks, cozy hats, shirts, sweatshirts, much of it with the 'Life is Good' messages on it. You will also find great stocking stuffers like SLAP watches. There is a wide range of price-points to work with any budget. And there is even a TV and leather chairs so your husband can lounge while you shop. "Life is Good" and their mascot, Jake (in wall on photo up top) have quite a following....fans have been coming into the store and thanking the Montanos for opening.

Kirkland Holiday Guide: Decor!

One of my favorite places in downtown Kirkland to browse home goods is Simplicity Decor. I first met A, as he's warmly called, at a small decorating seminar he was giving. We had a small but hearty group. He spoke with kindness and great passion as he shared with us how to make small changes to make a big impact in our homes. Since then, I've watched his active participation in the community both from a social and business standpoint. He can often be found partnering with local charities for a fun party to benefit a community need or sharing the hottest home trends in his initmate classes. Bottom line? A knows how to "work it". His lastest promo, 12 Days of Gift Bliss has been a huge hit! I decided to check out what A is offering in the way of decor this holiday season and would like to share a few of my favorites with you.

What's that? You hate decorating too? Well you're in luck my friend because that too is one of the many things in which POSH by Lacie Powell specializes. Chartreuse is one of my favorite colors to use during the holidays. It's such a modern twist on pine green. This pillow with it's fillagree type design adds just the right touch of festivity. Bonus! Removable cover!

What's on the menu for tonight's party? I love the idea of putting these up in the kitchen or over a casual brunch buffet to share with your guests what they'll be wining and dining on. Try applying them to a table for a cheese display--it's as easy peasy to write the name of your spreads next to the cheese.

How beautiful would these be as an addition to a centerpiece? Or as A taught in one of his classes, there is impact in numbers so imagine a couple dozen of them lining your mantle or dining table! Magnifique!

SINK SET

No doubt you'll be hosting guests this season so spice up their water closet with a delightfully yummy soap and lotion set that smells of fir needles!

Toll Brothers Buys Kirkland's CamWest

Last week, national luxury homebuilder Toll Brothers, based out of Pennsylvania, purchased CamWest Development for an undisclosed cash amount. Our friend Eric Campbell (photo), who started CamWest in 1989 and has built over 2800 homes in the region, will remain on board as the President of Toll's Seattle operations for at least three years. What a funny feeling it must be to start your own company and then have a boss all of a sudden! :-)

CamWest has accrued an arsenal of accolades over the years, and Toll had been shopping the Seattle market for quite some time, so it makes sense that the two found each other. CamWest's clever land acquisitions of which there are approx 1500 undeveloped lots and 15 developments where houses are under construction/for are a great fit for Toll as they make their first entry into the PNW market . Doug C. Yearley Jr., CEO of Toll Brothers stated, "We are excited to enter the Seattle market with the acquisition of CamWest. It is one of the premier luxury homebuilders in the region with a long history of delivering exceptional quality and value to its homeowners. There's a whole lot of eating you can do in this town, and you know we are one of Santa's favorite places. So I've scoured the local restaurants looking for special holiday delights that you should know about. And, of course I sprinkled some good cheer in the posts--- eyes open for the prizes and freebies my little elves!! Everyone still chuckles as they put them out on the roof every holiday season.

Le Grand Bistro Americain- Fete de Noel- Beginning Dec 1 Le Grand starts celebrating the holiday season with Parisian Joy. They will be in their warm glory with joyeaux noel seasonally inspired interior additions designed by Cathy Conner. Indulge, relax and savor items that are full of luxury but won't break the budget- foie gras, caviar, champagnes, iced oysters and of course the Noel Kir (lime, pomegranate seeds, ginger liqueur, plum bitters and bubbly). Kirkland Author Honors Local Police Officers

Stacey Sanner was looking for a way to pay tribute to the officers that were tragically murdered in late 2009. She heartfully put together her first book, "Keeping a Blue Light On: A Citizen's Tribute to the Seattle Police Department" which not only honors the fallen, but shows support for all law enforcement. She says, "these are the stories that don't make the news and they show the daily commitment and sacrifice all officers make to protect their community. And for which they are rarely thanked." Stacey was given permission to interview and photograph members of the Seattle Police Dept. There are personal stories about experiences, events and people along with the rewards and challenges that come along with the job. It is a beautiful tabletop book with amazing photos (also by Stacey) and stories of each officer that, once your pick it up, it's hard to put down.

The title of the book reflects the community's gesture during that sad time; putting a blue light in the window to show their support. Stacey will be doing a book signing at ParkPlace Books (348 Parkplace Center) on Weds, Nov 30th at 7pm. She will be talking about the book, how and why she did it, taking questions and signing your copy. Net proceeds from sales go to the Seattle Police Foundation. You can also buy her book at the Bridle Trails ACE Hardware, a local business that helped lead the sale of blue lights in '09 and donated profits to the fallen officers' families.

With the 2 year anniversary of the murders, it seems a poignant time to say THANK YOU to our officers for all that you do (with the small exception of giving expensive tickets for expired tags that nobody told us about, but other than that you guys are awesome). Thank you. ~j

Kirkland Holiday Guide: Happy Hour!

They are putting the tree up in the center of downtown today (just tweeted this photo)! The holidays are a great time to eat, drink and be merry. It's always fun and easy on the wallet to celebrate at a happy hour. Steve and I got pretty looped doing the research for this post, but it's just one of those sacrifices we're willing to make. Our meanderings brought us through the 98033- downtown core, Carillon Point, and ParkPlace. We ventured to a few watering holes that a couple of married old farts like ourselves wouldn't normally go to. Like places where my shoes would stick to the floor and I'd have a flashback of a college bar. But it's all good-there are happy hours for every type in this town so go get happy. Here is another compilation of our happy hours by Kirkland Tourism if you are 'thirsty' for more.

Don't forget to always have a designated driver, or have a lonely friend on standby, or call a cab. Eastside for Hire is pretty quick 206-453-9000. And of course, these happy hours take place in the BAR, not the dining room. I kept the descriptions short/sweet/absent of my smart-aleck remarks since this post is already a mile long. Congrats to all of the prize winners from last week-we love your feedback! I sent out a free appetizer/dessert card for Brix Wine Cafe to all of our quickest responders (13 of them!). Thank you to Brixfor joining in the fun of giving. Here are the local holiday happenings our readers were raving about: Argosy ships, Houghton Bonfire, eggnog lattes, shopping for unique gifts, driving around looking at Christmas lights, the music, the 12k's of Christmas, and decorating downtown Kirkland with garland. Which brings us to....

We need 100 people! November 19th 8am-1pm meet at Merrill Gardens (201 Kirkland Ave) to decorate downtown Kirkland with some holiday cheer. The stores have donated money for the garland, and now we just need able-bodied people to help. Bring your gear (work gloves, pliers, maybe a ladder if you're Handy Manny) and come hungry b/c Merrill Gardens will have hot cider, coffee and cookies and George's will be serving breakfast sandwiches at the 8am check-in at MG. This is a super way to meet some locals and feel some pride in community. They even feed you lunch when you're done with your job. Once you have finished eating all of your Halloween candy and checked all the election results, you will realize that the holidays are quickly approaching (grinches, insert cringe here). The darkness at 4:30 is a good indicator too. I've decided that this is the season I am going to stay ahead of the curve and shop early. For 2011 I will be a whirring machine of both thoughtfulness and efficiency that will be unmatched. By the way,I am addressing holiday cards with my toes as I type this post.

So, let's kick off this season with a gift for you! Tell me your favorite thing to do in Kirkland during the holidays. First five responses get a free prize! aaahhh- giving feels so good. Include your address b/c I will mail it to you. :-)

My next gift to share with all of you is my friend, Lacie Powell, who will be guest blogging with me through November and December. Get your gobblers (and your wallets) ready- it's that time of year...

~Turkey Trot- Hopelink's 11th Annual on Sunday 11/20/11 at Marina Park. There's a 5K run at 11am and a Family Fun Walk at 11:05. Cost is $30 now or $40 if you procrastinate. Either way it benefits homeless and low income families in our area so go get some exercise before your tryptophan overload kicks in. All 5 Rabuchins are signing up from what I hear my 8 eight year olds chatting about it.

~John Muir Elementary has their own student turkey trotters that need your support. Did you know that John Muir is a Title 1 school in Kirkland with nearly half of their students receiving free lunches? The students in each grade who run the most laps around their school during recess on 11/7-11/10 will earn a turkey to share with their family. They need turkeys! You can either donate a frozen turkey or make a monetary donation-turkeys are approx $25/ea- and your contribution is completely tax deductible. You can mail checks made out to John Muir PTSA and note "Turkey Trot": John Muir Elementary, 14012 132nd Ave NE, Kirkland, WA 98034. Turkeys get distributed the week of Nov 14th.

So childish but even as an adult it still kinda feels good to say it.

Are your car tabs expired???

Take a look. Budget cuts = no more reminder letters about renewing your tabs. You are ON YOUR OWN-- cold turkey! Therefore, you could be unknowingly driving around town with an expired registration. And we all know the Kirkland PD finds joy in running every license plate of every vehicle that passes their laser-hawk eyeballs so don't make this preventable $216 mistake (yes, the ticket costs more than your tabs, my friend).

The good news is that you can renew online. You can also enter your info/plates on the DOL site to have them send you an email reminder before your tabs expire. Take a second and do it. I can think of lots of better ways to spend $216.

Here's what I've got. I'm a little hungry and cranky so forgive me. And please help fill in the blanks....

K-Pub is getting ready to open really soon in 21 Central's old spot. They took down the paper and were washing the windows last night.

Haute Philosophy Salon- 118 Central Way they have sign up that it's coming soon. Now there will be 412 choices of where to get your hair done downtown. :-)

Remedies Pharmacy- I've never been in this store before (140 Central), so can someone please explain it to me? I walked by expecting to see a pharmacy set-up, but noticed a counter w/cakes and treats and ice creams and shoes and cards and a sign about espresso and sandwiches. Huh?

Two Twelve on Central- Yes, we ate there but haven't done a post b/c I don't really have anything exciting to tell you one way or the other. Food was pretty good- not a lot of paleo choices so I nibbled on a hearty meatball and some salad. Our waitress got very confused and had given another table our check which they so kindly paid for and left. It all got sorted out. Need to go again to form an opinion. LMK your experience. I heard Lynn from Lynn's Bistro is a silent partner.

Bob Sternoff- can people cut the guy a break? This is why I would never be in politics. Getting sick of the smear signs. Kinda feels a little bit like the drama of high school. Play nice.

One month countdown until Stavros of Santorini leaves for his annual trip home to Greece. So get your gyro craving fulfilled ( I love the gyro salad!) asap before the handwritten "closed" signed goes up til January. I spent some time sitting with Stavros in front of his restaurant watching the cars go by, waving at all of his friends, and I swear he knows every customer by name (and there are many!). After 18 yrs in business in Kirklnad he's got it dialed in.

Admittedly, this shin-dig is not in Kirkland. But since I am helping host the event I wanted to make sure to invite all of my friends (that's you)! Splendid is opening their first store in the PNW at Bellevue Square (where Svarovski Crystals used to be) and they will be celebrating their arrival with an event that is in the true spirit of their company.. It's about a fun and family- focused afternoon and it's called "Crafting Community for Splendid."

The Fruit Fly Death Pool

Steve wanted me to post this. He's been complaining that my posts have been vanilla lately and he misses my old funny, sometimes personal and off-the-cuff, and occasionally controversial blogging. This comes from the guy that hasn't added any content to this site in the last 3 years. Not that fruit flies are exciting, but I get it, it's just random info from me........so anyway.....

I thought it was just my house with fruit flies swarming my eyeballs this week but a bunch of friends were complaining they have them too. How's a girl supposed to drink a glass of wine in peace? I'll tell you. First- it helps to get all perishables off the counter. I am really missing my banana fix and the avocados and tomatoes just don't taste right refrigerated, but do what you must. So, here's the remedy: take a plastic cup filled 1/4 full of apple cider vinegar and add a few drops of liquid dish soap. Swirl. Leave it on your counter. Magically these micro-brained (and seemingly impossible to fist clench?!) fruit flies line up on the rim of the cup and plunge into their beautiful pool of death. Rinse and repeat daily until fruit fly season is over. Then you can pour your wine without having to drape a napkin over it. :-)

There's a whole lot of digging going on at the old Frosty's site at 11810 98th Ave NE (just across the street east of Juanita Village). Everyone is asking what is going on. Wellllll..that hole in the earth is the future underground parking that will sit underneath a four story 96 unit apartment complex with 9000 square feet of retail space. The NEW Kirkland Market !

I'm not talking about the Weds Market, although I love that too. Geoff Lakman of Lakeshore Corporation was sharing the scoop on the eastside's public market that will be located at 15 Lake Street (where the old Lake St Grill was). This open feeling Kirkland Market will still have the stairs down the center but there will be 8-9 kiosks both upstairs and downstairs with vendors along the sides and open seating in the center. You will be able to see 'through' the area, so as you walk along Lake St you'll be able to capture views of the water through the glass.

They are still signing leases right now but I've got a sneak peek. Sasi's Cafe (which used to be next to Calabria before that building came down) will be a great familiar face to have back in town at the market. Also expect to see the smoke shop, a fish grill, flowers, cheeses, wine, sandwiches, ice cream, coffee (of course!) and even some artists. This concept is one that fits well with today's economy- smaller spaces mean lower rent for the vendors. Geoff compared the idea to the Melrose Market in Capitol Hill if you have ever been there. So now you know what's behind all those mysterious plastic sheets in the window openings. Expect an opening in the spring of 2012. What a fun addition to downtown Kirkland!

This message is from Penny Sweet, our Deputy Mayor. It's hard to believe, but....

Next Sunday is the 10^th anniversary of the tragedy of 9/11. I’m sending this message in the hope that you will join me and many of our neighbors in honoring the memory of those lost and the spirit of the incredible “coming together” that we experienced following the event by coming together again. SHOW YOUR COLORS! 10 years ago in the days and weeks following 9/11 every neighborhood in every city in our country displayed their compassion, respect and pride by hanging the American Flag. Let’s do that again this year. So… flags at home, flags on decks of apartments and condos, flags on businesses, flags on boats and flags on cars if you have them. There are flags available at Fred Meyer and Michaels in Kirkland and I’m sure many other places.

Our flag is already out in front of the house. Ten years later and my chest still tightens and my eyes well every time someone mentions 9/11. Love to the families and service people that were lost on this tragic day, and to all that still makes America the greatest place on Earth.

Marsha, our ex-Parking Enforcement Officer, had a few words for me after my post from Aug 23rd that she said I could share with you. Thank you, Pretty Lady! Well said.

Hello,

I am no longer employed by Kirkland as a Parking Enforcement Officer so I figured I could send you a note. Anyone that knows me knows, that I prefer being called "Pretty Lady" and I'm not nice, I'm fair but stern.....kinda like your favorite Mother.

Parking isn't a problem in Kirkland.....but "bad attitudes" are. If you were to describe the parking situation to any other city, employee, or company that sells parking equipment you'd be laughed at.

1 PEO a day, I worked 11am-9pm, 2 hour, 3 hour, 4 hour FREE Parking. FREE ALL DAY parking usually 1 1/2 blks away, $1.00 an hour parking from 5-9pm which means $4.00 a night, Leased Private Parking Lot which was $1.00 an hour from 9am-9pm. FREE PARKING W/PERMIT for downtown business owners and employees. ALL DAY FREE PARKING on Sundays and holidays, By the time I got around to ticketing vehicles on FRI or SAT it would be 1:30pm-2pm which is plenty of time to get your now sober butt out of bed and retrieve you vehicle. If you did receive a $35 dollar ticket it is still cheaper than a cab drive or DUI. It's the price to play. FREE ALL DAY Motorcycle Parking Spots

Name one city anywhere in the world that has more lenient parking near a lake, w/awesome stores, and beautiful trees and flowers!? I know you can't.

Stop whining about the parking to strangers and friends, start spreading the word on how wonderful the city is. Employees and Regulars.... Start parking in places that respect the business owners and frees up spots for "new customers and soon to be "new friends". Take responsibility for your parking tickets...sometimes you win and sometimes you must pay. I'm pretty sure everyone has once come running and yelling and waving their hands to me and they got a win...at least once. Getting a parking ticket is all about being part of a city.

I loved my job, loved meeting people, loved giving directions, giving restaurant suggestions, returning keys, phones, dogs and children, I loved doing personal shopping on my off hours, loved laughing at funny moments, loved hugging at the sad. I tried to treat everyone "equally the same" (only maybe not "red state" plates or convertibles in the summer) if you didn't get a ticket from me (unless you yelled, lied, or called me fat) you usually were given a lecture on how to be better and options on where to park next time. ;)

If you have any ideas that the Parking Board has not covered or thought of.....It's time to volunteer!

'Eden' Movie Filming East of Market

I've received a flurry of questions since yesterday about what looks like a movie filming at the corner of 7th and 3rd (east of Market). You were right! They're gone now though. It's called "Eden" and it's based on a true story about a woman in New Mexico who was abducted, throw in the trunk of a car and smuggled into Las Vegas, where she was imprisoned. This victim of human trafficking and sexual slavery managed to survive by carving out power and influence by the same organization that was holding her captive.

Megan Griffiths is directing and Jamie Chung (Hangover 2) and Beau Bridges will be starring in the film expected for release in 2012. You can find out more by visiting theirfacebook page or IMDB.

Get Ready with RED Emergency Prevention

Here is an interesting new company with services in our area that you need to know about. County RED is committed to emergency prevention and disaster preparedness. Any friend of my husband Steve knows that he takes his nickname of "Mr. Safety" pretty seriously. So, you can imagine our excitement when we heard that a local firefighter and a pair of UW students have started doing household safety reviews and disaster plans at no cost. Did you know that over 90% of homes in WA state are not prepared for fires or other residential emergencies? Yikes. Not a good stat with all the natural disasters there have been lately.

Knock knock knock. These three handsome young men show up at the door in matching shirts and an iPad in hand. They have software that has a comprehensive checklist of safety items for the home which will generate a score after our walk-thru the house. I showed them where our fire extinguishers are, CO2 detectors, flashlights, gas shutoff tool, emergency plan, escape routes, dryer vents,etc. I was feeling pretty good about it since I've been through the city's "Map Your Neighborhood" program and I do the crime watch for my street AND I'm married to Mr. Safety (bonus). I thought things were looking up as I scampered around the house proudly producing hardhats and backup water supplies. Then we got an 82%. Which almost made me cry (yes, I was that kid you hated in school. I've never gotten an 82 before). But the RED team praised our efforts and said that's the highest score they have seen so far.

We also talked to the guys about escape routes from our home and they showed us how to turn off our water meter at the street and had us practice too. Of course, they offer products and services to get you and your home ready for any disaster. The city would like our feedback on the ever-perplexing issue of parking in downtown Kirkland. Here's a link to the survey. It's quick- I did it, so you should too. That way the team of scientists on this issue can move on to solving world peace. I sometimes daydream about stealng all of Marsha's chalk sticks. Btw- Marsha is the very nice and funny lady usually in the parking enforcement cart but DARN IT she's quick. Then there's the new electronic chalking system that Big Brother the city is using now in case Marsha grabs a cup of coffee. Despite all of my whining, I rarely have issue with finding a parking spot in downtown Kirkland. My problem is more that I'd like to spend a few hours doing multiple things (shop/lunch/park) but feel like I always have to go move my car..... j

How many of you use Groupon, Living Social, Tippr, Amazon Local, Mamapedia, Juice in the City, Bloomspot, Yelp Deals? ....sigh... so many deals, so little time. But there is a new local deal site that Kirkland resident, Lee Wang, has started that has a different spin on it. FanZappy! It's just fun to say. :-)

FanZappy has a program where customer loyalty is rewarded. Currently, this is a mobile app for the Droid, but iPhone and other smartphones are coming in the very near future. Here's how it works. For a nominal fee, you can 'unlock' voucher packs to some of your favorite participating merchants. Once you use your all of your vouchers, there is a prize to thank you for your continued business. Here's an example: Ristorante Paradiso offers a voucher pack of (6) $7 coupons ($42 value) that costs you just $3. If you use your first voucher, your investment has already paid for itself. Once you use all six (before the expiration) you will win FREE desserts for two people. Everyone wins- the customers get their discount and the businesses don't have to lose their shirts while encouraging repeat business. Once you have the voucher on your phone, it is easy to redeem by having the merchant enter a 4 digit PIN on your FanZappy app.

FanZappy is rapidly adding local businesses to their program and they have 100+ offers currently. As CEO Lee puts it, "this is customer paid marketing." With a PhD, Microsoft and another startup under his belt, he's confident this is a winning formula in the deal space for both the consumer and the business. "We're counting on the power of social networking," says Lee, b/c he knows that many of us can 'do it all' right from our phones. Right now the focus is in Kirkland and the eastside but they are quickly spreading to Seattle and will then start branching out nationally. I realize that Kirkland ParkPlace is slated for a major overhaul, but I still couldn't help but share their directory with you. This is currently in front of Rikki Rikki and the fountain.
