It’s that time of the year again and Celebrate Kirkland! and the KDA are in the midst of our annual scramble to put on our 14^th annual community celebration and fireworks show. Thank you so much for your generous support in the past. Once again Todd and Brett Johnson of Lee Johnson Auto Family have stepped up and are challenging the whole community to match their $12,000 contribution. Will you join us in trying to match and beat the Johnson’s challenge? The price tag for the entire day’s events is $75,000 and we are not quite at the half way mark. (even with the Johnsons).

Play-Well TEKnologies Grand Opening 5/18

Attention pint-sized future engineers--this place is for you!

I visited with the manager Brandon Jones yesterday, and he is super excited to be opening up Play-Well TEKnologies's first activity center in the state of Washington. What is Play-Well, you ask? It's a place for kids to learn engineering through play--with LEGO's!! Children 5-14 years old will learn about building techniques, gear ratios, torque and engineering without even realizing their brains are being challenged to think in new ways. Because it's fun! From gear drive cars, catapults and spinning tops the wheels will be turning. There are no papers or take home assignments, it's hands on learning that encourages kids to have an appreciation for how things work and to understand the importance of teamwork and collaboration.

The instructors are often engineers, scientists, teachers, or physics students with a passion for innovation and being able to spark that enthusiasm in our youth. Play-Well has previously been involved in enrichment programs through schools and parks/rec, but with this new activity center, they will be offering workshops (1.5 hr for $16), summer camps ($175) and birthday parties ($300 up to 16 kids). There are primary and advanced classes and themed classes too- Ninjaneering, Jedi Engineering, and lots more... even a Girls Engineering (go girl power!).

There are about 200,000-300,000 legos, including gears and motors and wheels. I know some kids that would think they hit the jackpot walking into this place! - Jake's "Life is Good" is closing- I heard Marty and Reagan are moving to Cali which makes me sad b/c they could quite possibly be the two nicest happy people on the planet. Everything is on sale if you hurry in!

-Weds Market is moving back to Marina Park this year. Opening day 6/5.

-Park Lane- moving fwd with finding funding to create a 'festival style' street, where cars can still park there during peak hours but then it will close off for fun events and all be walking/seating. LOVE.

-A friend of mine is putting on this mud run and it totally looks like fun (even though it's not in Kirkland) on 7/13. www.themudapalooza.com

-Sweet & Sassy- women's boutique opening in what used to be the other half of Bikini Beach. Is this the same one that used to be in downtown Kirkland years ago? need to investigate!

- Zaw Pizza- artisan take/bake pizza with wine pairings. Heard great things. Opening in Crush Footwear's old spot next to Fox Cleaners.

-2CH- I still have no idea what is going on in this old spot across from Columbia Athletic Club. They created a drive-thru, the city stopped them, then they un-did their drive thru and created parking and re-lined their lot. Seems silently still there now.

I am totally grossed out. You know it's bad when I cancel a Saturday morning waterksi and it's glass out there. Just didn't feel like getting dissentery today. On Thursday, 68,000 gallons of sewage leaked into Lake Washington when a transmitter failed at the Kirkland Wastewater Station. Timing is impeccable with the Opening Day of boating season and nothing but sun in the forecast. More details here, I just wanted to make sure you all know to stay dry for now. Maybe just turn the other way- and think happy thoughts...like, have you seen how beautiful the landscaping is on our medians lately??

Kirkland 4th of July Fundraiser Auction-

Just because Seattle won't be celebrating with fireworks this year doesn't mean we can't! The silent auction starts at 6pm at the Kirkland Eagle's Club on Sat 5/18 and continues with games, dancing and food until midnight. James O'Farrell and the Mighty Wickerman start playing their music at 8pm. Have some fun and donate some funds so we can continue Kirkland's Fourth of July tradition! Don't forget to RSVP.

The Kirkland Downtown Association is seeking sponsors for the downtown flower pots. A professional gardener plants, waters, weeds, trims and fertilizes the pot all season. Taco Time Donates $7500 to LWHS

That's a lot of tacos! On Tuesday, April 2, the Rose Hill Taco Time NW restaurant hosted its first annual one day fundraiser for Lake Washington High School. Every year, volunteers gather to sweep, weed and get rid of a winter's worth of accumulated blight. We are
well fortified with coffee and pastries as we clean and sweep the downtown blocks and marina.

We need your help!

Meet outside the Lake Street Starbucks at 8:45 am and get your work team assignments. This is a great opportunity to meet other residents and students that care about Kirkland and want it to look its best.

Bring gloves, brooms, rakes, weed diggers, crack hoes ( darn it, why does this make me laugh every year), and gardening implements. Don't worry if you don't have these items -- we bring extras.

Seattle Thread Company now OPEN

I popped in to say hi to Konstantin (rt in photo) and Yakov Gorshkov (left) just as they were getting ready for their grand opening of the Seattle Thread Company at 9 Lake Street. This father/son team is focusing on business casual menswear that embraces natural fibers/quality of the cloth from boutique brands such as Jack Victor, Hickey Freeman, and I was loving the look and feel of Zachary Prell (well, HE wasn't there, but his clothes were). The Gorshkovs are Ukrainian and love the upscale walkable downtown of Kirkland that gets lots of foot traffic. You can find local and imported clothes, underwear, hats, belts, and shoes that are priced mid to high end. Expect to find a great shirt anywhere between $80-160. Their goal is to be a smaller version of Nordstrom, offering flexibility and custom pieces with made-to-measure suits and on-site tailoring.

Their store has a clean modern northwest feel and the clothes are complimented with glass and paintings by local artists (which are all for sale). There's a nice sitting area in the back where you can wait for your man as he tries on his new finds in one of the large dressing rooms. Yakov owned a women's boutique in Pittsburgh prior to this shop and Konstantin is a computer engineer with a passion for fashion. Cross Kirkland Corridor- Lawsuit for Kirkland

message about the Cross Kirkland Corridor

Dear Community Member,

It is with great disappointment
that I share with you that the City of Kirkland was served on April 1, 2013
with a Federal lawsuit which seeks to stop the City from removing the rail
tracks and ties along the Cross Kirkland Corridor. The lawsuit was filed by
Ballard Terminal Railroad Company (“Ballard”) in Federal District Court in the
Western District of Washington. In addition to the injunction, Ballard
has filed a petition with the federal Surface Transportation Board (“STB”)
seeking to reactivate the Eastside Rail Corridor for freight service from
Woodinville to Bellevue, WA. These actions make it necessary for the City
to carefully evaluate Ballard’s claims and to consider our legal options.

As you may be aware, the City has
hired a contractor to remove the rails to make way for an Interim Trail along
the Cross Kirkland Corridor. The removal has been anticipated to begin
this month; with construction of the Interim Trail to begin this fall. We
intend to keep with the community’s desire to allow use of the trail as soon as
possible, even if it requires us to put our plans on hold as we take time to
better understand the impacts of the lawsuit and petition.

The Cross Kirkland Corridor is 5.75
miles of the 44+ mile Eastside Rail Corridor (ERC). Apart from the
segments owned by the City of Kirkland and the City of Redmond, the ERC has
been recently acquired by King County.

It is our initial understanding
that Ballard seeks to keep Kirkland from removing the rails on our Corridor so
that freight use can be re-established. We are hopeful that the Federal
District Court will rule on the injunction case in the coming weeks and that
the STB decision regarding Ballard’s request to reactivate our Corridor as a
freight (not transit or excursion train) corridor will also be expedited.

We are confident that Kirkland will
ultimately be able to carry out our citizens’ vision for the Corridor.
However, there are many complexities to this issue and your understanding and
patience is appreciated. Updates will be released through the City’s
email notification subscriber lists and posted to the Cross Kirkland Corridor
webpage at www.kirklandwa.gov/crosskirklandcorridor.

Crush Footwear moves to Lake St

A little downtown shuffle is about to happen in early April. Rosalyn Sumners' Bella Tesori is consolidating into its corner space (Bella Bambini) and Crush Footwear will be moving from Kirkland Ave down to Bella Tesori's former space at 3 Lake St. Got that? There's a quiz at the end of this post. Good news is this will be 70% more space for Crush, which means more shoes for you, ladies! Co-owner Rhonda Herbert searches the world for styles from emerging and hard-to-find designers. "Although we do carry some recognizable brands, we really love to communicate directly with designers who apply their creative genius to make unique footwear styles," says Rhonda. Spring styles are arriving now from Spain, France, Portugal and the US. They are very excited to move into the old Betty's Apparel space and remain part of our Kirkland community. Big news for the littlest concert-goers in town...after 35 years at Marina Park, the Kirkland children's concerts will move to Juanita Beach Park this year! That's right, you're going to have to shake your diaper in a new spot. Fun beach, playground area, more parking. They are 10-11am from July 9- Aug 20th. The Thursday evening (grown-up) concerts are still at Marina Park. Brew pubs, wine bars, yummy food. I'm not speaking in full sentences today. Those go July 11- Aug 22nd from 7-8:30.

Five Guys Burgers and Fries Opens 3/4

I know you all are excited for this opening on 124th in Totem Lake. How do I know? Because while I was chatting with the owner the other day, Joe Iraqi (above,who also owns the Northgate location) at least 8 people strolled in trying to order a burger. Patience, dear Kirklanders, Monday at 11am is drawing near.

Five Guys prides themselves on making everything fresh to order. The meat is 80/20 beef that is never frozen, huge bags of potatoes sit waiting to be sliced and fried (in cholesterol-free peanut oil), and the secret recipe buns are made at a local bakery. Even the Coca-Cola Freestyle machines mix up your soda on spot- there are over 100 flavors! The menu is simple: burgers (double patties), little burgers (single patty), dogs, sandwiches, fries and drinks. Burgers range fro $3.99-6.99 and all toppings are free. A typical day takes them through 25-30 fifty pound bags of potatoes! That's a lot of fries. And cajun fries..mmm...

Joe said they pride themselves on their customer service and cleanliness. With its white and red checked casual feel and music blaring I could envision the fast-paced friendly environment that will soon take shape there. A large bin of shelled peanuts sits off to the side of the dining area that seats 79, so you can nibble those for free and toss your shells on the floor. My kids and Steve are going to be all over this.

You can order online at www.fiveguys.com and they won't cook your fries until you arrive so they are always fresh. This may be the closest thing to In-N-Out we have here. And it's going to be busy! They've already hired over 40 people and are looking for more. Oh, and how cool-they're glad to do bunless burgers by wrapping in lettuce but I think I might go crazy this week and order mine as the real deal. Just need to save time for an extra workout this week. There is yoga next door..... ;-) ~j

Summerfest 2013: A Seafair Sanctioned Community Event

The Kirkland Events Foundation is proud to announce that Kirkland Summerfest has been selected by the Seafair Foundation to be a Seafair Sanctioned Community Event. Summerfest joins the Kirkland Classic Car Show as the only two Seafair events in Kirkland. With this designation comes "the promotional power of the Seafair brand and its extensive marketing campaign to generate exposure and attendance for participating community events in the Greater Seattle Area," according to Jill Farley, Seafair Foundation manager.

The second annual Kirkland Summerfest is a weekend-long celebration of art, music, food and culture taking place August 9-11 (the weekend after the hydroplane races). Summerfest features an opening night special presentation of Shakespeare in the
Park with The Tempest, performed by the Seattle Shakespeare Company. Over fifty musical performances, plein air artists, robotics competitions and demonstrations, and a whole host of kids activities including Touch-a-Truck, Radio Disney and the fun, games and rides in the Kid Zone. Most attractions atSummerfest are absolutely FREE. Applications for vendors, performers and sponsors are now open!

The Kirkland Events Foundation is a Kirkland-based nonprofit creating Kirkland events for the benefit of Kirkland. All net proceeds from the Kirkland Events Foundation are returned to our community in support of those events which cannot support themselves such as the Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks and the Summer Concert Series.

Remember: not all events are created equal. Support those events which benefit our community.

Kirkland Shamrock Run 2013

I know your ears will perk if I say the word "BEER" so I'm saying that first. New this year for the Kirkland Shamrock Run on 3/16 is the Wilde Rover's Beer Deck, food trucks, lots of exhibitors to browse and the course is USATF certified as a 5K. It's at Marina Park and starts at 9am. Proceeds benefit the Kirkland Downtown Association. If you register before 2/28 it's $35, and then it goes up to $40. I've seen some promo codes floating around for $5 off so keep your eyes peeled for those too ('Columbia', 'LakeWashingtonPT'). BTW, if you register late you won't get a timer so don't procrastinate.

There are different waves for every type of participant. Competitive runners (5- 9 min/mi), Run for Fun (9 min/mi and above), Dog/Runner, Stroller/Runner, Walker. Here's where you register. And if you just can't muster the motivation to join a wave, you can always come help! (or both) They are in need of volunteers to pull this event off and there's a handy online sign up matrix now to make it easy. See you there-maybe for some green beer after? ~j

From Knockers to Adventures

About a year and a half ago I did a post on Ellyn Oaksmith, a local author who had just self-published a book called "Knockers." It's always fun to have a follow-up post that boasts a success story. Ellyn just let me know that Knockers was picked up by Harper Collins and will be published this Tuesday, under a new title Adventures with Max and Louise. There will be an e-book release February 12th-- just in time for Valentine's day. What a great treat to buy yourself for $2.99.

Here's how Ellyn said it happened.... "An agent in New York got half way through the book and called me, asking if I had representation. I had just gotten a glowing review on KIndleObsessed.com and so people were calling me out of the blue. I was busy working on my next book DIVINE MOVES, which I will be done with on Tuesday in time for the book launch so didn't think much of it. I signed with the agent thinking nothing would happen. She called me a couple of weeks later with 3 offers. I went with Harper Collins because they were the most enthusiastic and established publisher. Having the manuscript polished and vetted by their team has been a dream come true. The line editor, who did the final polish, made sure that everything, right down to the cell phones in the story were the right vintage andmodel, that restaurants in Seattle were still open that I'd mentioned and even let me know that my timeline fore one character was physically impossible and I had to change WWI to WWII. Instead of feeling stupid, I felt lucky to have someone like that watch my back. I'd much rather plow out the story, doing my best and have someone with a keen eye vet out the details."

Isn't that so cool? I just wanted to share the news with you all so you can get Adventures with Max and Louise downloaded and congratulate Ellyn yourself. Sounds like some Kirkland Blog readers are her biggest fans, myself included. Way to go Ellyn! ~j

Columbia Athletic Club: New Aquatic Center Opens 2/11

Columbia Athletic Club at Juanita Bay is excited to announce the completion of their NEW aquatic center, which will be ready for swimmers, splashers and oglers on February 11th. The much anticipated multi-million dollar project was constructed by Red Hawk Group and includes a 25 yard lap pool, a 17 yard teaching pool for aqua therapy/lessons, and a hot tub. In addition to the salt water pools, surrounded by white and blue tile work and new high ceilings, there are also four new private family changing stations.

Above is a rendition shot taken from the southeast corner of the building. Don't worry, you don't have to wear a speedo like the cartoon man in there. Below that are some current photos I took as the tiling gets completed and they start preparing to fill the pools with almost 100,000 gallons of water. The lap pool will be kept at 84 degrees and the teaching pool at 90 degrees. Dave Hamilton, Manager of the club (photo) said, "We appreciate everyone's patience through the process. Not only the members, but the neighbors and others that have been impacted too."

Sounds like a great reason to have a party! Everyone can come check it out (members AND non-members) and celebrate at the grand opening on Feb 18th from 8am-8pm where there will be food, raffles and giveaways. ~j

Tick Tock You Don't Stop

Well, actually......they do. The 1935 Captain Anderson Ferry Clock at the corner of Lake Street and Kirkland Avenue stopped at 1:33 years ago. Its housing was badly deteriorated and the City of Kirkland removed and stored it. A citizen committee lead by Sue Contreras in partnership with the Kirkland Heritage Society took on the challenge to restore the historic clock. With help from more than 250 citizens and organizations, the committee has raised $9000 to cover the cost of the project. The City of Kirkland Public Workds Dept has upgraded the light standard on which the clock will again be installed.

Please join in with the community on Sunday Feb 10th where the Captain Anderson Ferry Clock will be re-dedicated to the citizens of Kirkland at 1pm with the unveiling of the clock. She'll be tick tocking again at Lake and Kirkland. ~j

You saw my Valentine's reminder and meant to pick up the phone or start clicking but you forgot, didn't you? Fear not. The Heathman Hotel is offering a special Valentine's Day Package for locals and visitors to enjoy the romantic holiday. $214 for 2/14 includes: one night in a classic guestroom, valet parking, rose petal turndown, a bottle of champagne and a 'bathrobe breakfast for two' in-room. Lake Street Place: What's in Store for Downtown Kirkland

It's time to get ready for some exciting new development in downtown Kirkland. Finally! The re-vitalization effort on Lake Street, spear-headed by Stuart McLeod, is a down-sized version of the approved plans from 2007. The new spaces will add 185,000 sf total, which includes 70,000 sf of office space, retail and restaurants on the ground floor and 252 new parking spots in a concealed above ground parking garage (which will be public in the evening-yahoo!). Stuart is a long-time Kirklander, and with the help of Chesmore/Buck Architecture, they have created a well thought out plan which includes a courtyard area and wide sidewalks to keep the look and feel of Kirkland and to encourage foot traffic and community gatherings. "If another developer was doing a project on thissite, they could just place the face of the building 13’ off of the Lake Streetcurb instead of the gracious 33’ width of the courtyard proposed by McLeod. The courtyard will be such a public amenity for year round activities"," said architect Rick Chesmore. Building heights max at 55 feet, which is the current zoned code. You can see from the rendition above how office space gets tiered on top of Milagro and behind Hector's with patios and landscaping. And where there is office space, there are hungry employees to eat in our restaurants and patrons to shop in our stores.

The 5th hearing with the Design Review Board was this week, and they received approval to move forward with their plans. Next they will submit for a permit. The project will likely spend a year in development (permit/bidding process/pre-leasing) and is estimated to take 18-24 months to build. I'm looking forward to this endeavor breathing new life into our downtown. ~j

I didn't want to start the new year off by whining about the things that have gone sideways for me in the first 4 days of the year already. Nor did I want to kick off 2013 by blasting LA Fitness for being an over-glorified corporate box of cardio machines with no care for customer service. That would be a jerk move. So instead let's talk about something happy, like love and maybe add in a little laughter at the end with some Polar Plunge photos ( a bit late, see rant above)....

Kirkland Summer Concerts Need Your Help!

It seems strange to breathe the word 'summer' in January, but the Kirkland Summer Concert volunteers are working hard to firm up the program for us now, so that we can enjoy the shows when the sun (hopefully) returns. The concerts are paid for entirely through sponsorships and donations and sponsors are needed to support the 2013 series. As a sponsor, you receive valuable print and media publicity, and the opportunity to set up a table at the events. And, of course, a good feeling in your heart knowing that so many Kirklanders will be thankful for your generosity.

The Kirkland Summer Concerts recently won the "Best of 2012" Award from Seattle Magazine for "Best Live Music Venue/Nightlife in Kirkland." This past summer marked 35 years of free community concerts at Marina Park. The lineup for 2013 will be announced soon (perhaps after you decide to sponsor?)...Thursday evening concerts will feature a variety of blues, swing, classic rock, Latin, and reggae bands. Tuesday morning concerts will MOVE to Juanita Beach Park, which has ample onsite parking, a large beach and playground, and easy access to Juanita Village.

Polar Plunge on New Year's Day: A Kirkland Tradition

Kinda sends shivers down your spine, right? (and ears and knees and toes and .....) That's exactly why we love it!! Because we're not so smart and it's just a fun silly way to start the new year with a chilling cleanse and a bunch of other crazy people. This is the 11th annual Kirkland Polar Plunge, mysteriously planned by nobody, just circulated by word of mouth and shadowy whispers that draw close to 300 people to Marina Park in Kirkland at 1pm on January 1st.

Costumes are optional but always appreciated. This year I will be wearing a "40 year old with a hangover and muffin-top in a bikini" costume. Always a good laugh. Water temp is likely in the low 50's and the air today is 45 degrees. Just for reference, waterskiiers typically have a personal threshold for the combined air/water temp minimum, anywhere from 90 to 100 degrees. But that is in a DRYSUIT. This unofficial event is not for the weak at heart. So bring it.... all of you that are ready to kick 2012 in the ass and welcome 2013 in a memorable way. See you there. Happy New Year! ~j

Kirkland Honoring the Families of Newtown, CT

Last night a small gathering of people came together at the Kirkland F.O.E. to honor the memory of those lost in the Newtown tragedy last Friday. It was really special, with photos of the children and teachers by candlelight and a poignant moment of silence. Something about bagpipes always makes it extra difficult to hold back tears. Thanks to Sarah Levoy for pulling this event together so quickly to help our community in its healing process. Also honored that evening was Kelsey Jensen, one of our own, a Peter Kirk 5th grader who passed away this week from an AVM on her cerebellum. She will be missed by many.

Joene LaBou joined in the evening with her recently launched project called Brick by Brick, where locals can decorate a brick with a heartfelt message to be sent to Newtown. In case you missed last night's gathering, there is another planned for THIS Sunday 12/23 at 3:30 in Marina Park by the "PuddleJumpers" statue to honor the Newtown families. Please bring flowers, candles, messages and your voices for "Amazing Grace".

May you all have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I think we will be giving some extra tight hugs this season. ~j

Baaaaaaaah-humbug. The Christmas Decor Store and Chalet Cadeau Gifts on Central Way, both owned by Wendy Marshall, will be packing up the day after Christmas and departing Kirkland for good. After six years here, Wendy would like to thank everyone for their patronage as she heads to 24110 Bothell-Everett Hwy in March. Between her $20k/mo rent, the perpetually leaky ceiling and downtown parking issues......... something had to change. There's no farewell cleareance sale, but still lots of fun finds, especially with the holiday coming up. When I chatted with Wendy in the Christmas store, there was a steady stream of customers and look how cute they wrap up gifts too! Really fun ornaments for under $10. Go get 'em before she is gone...

Lots of questions and chatter about what is happening in the three spaces along Central Way that used to be Design Within Reach, X Gym (they moved a few doors down) and Promesse. Bassline Fitness is preparing to offer Kirklanders a full sensory workout experience that isn't just about sweating it out on some state-of-the-art cardio machines but getting motivated by the music. Get it? BASSline. The build-out is still underway, but think of a hip LA or NYC type gym with a kickin' sound system and workouts designed to climb and cool with the music.

Dave and Angela Fox (photo above) have owned fitness facilities all over the country and are settled back in Kirkland. Angela is from the area and they loved downtown Kirkland for its community focus, walkability, neighbors and convenience. Bassline offers two classes that are both total body workouts. One class is called "Lean 425" which is instructor-led high intensity interval training. This hour long challenge has you working on their Woodway treadmills (which are super fancy and minimize joint impact), and also going through resistance training stations. The goal is to increase muscle and burn calories while have fun in this fast paced workout that can be tailored to your fitness level. The second class, called "The Mashup" is back in what I call, 'the big room'. Yep, that's the one with a stage and two super-sized video screens, 40 spin bikes, 12 Woodway Curves (non-motorized treadmills. YOU are the motor and therefore burn 30% more calories), 10 Krankcycles (get those arms going, thx Johnny G), and two rowers. In a 60 minute class you will have the opportunity to ride, run, krank and row as you (and your instructor.. insert my wicked laugh here) see fit. You can challenge all the different muscle groups while being inspired by your instructor, the playlist and music videos.

Blink! It's that time of year again.

The Kirkland Downtown Association's tree lighting event is this Saturday, December 1st, from 4-8. This is always a fun community get-together to kickoff the festivities for the holiday season. The tree has moved (see if you can find it...) and will be illuminated at 6pm. I can't be sure if that is when it is being lit or when the speeches begin, but you get the idea. With hungry kids in tow, our family secret for this night has always been to get down there early, eat and hang out and then watch the tree light up with a hot chocolate or tottie. Come on down and enjoy an evening of live music on two stages, caroling, a bonfire, kids' activities, hot cider, Santa (6-8), and even a Gingerbread House competition at Merrill Gardens (4-6). The local shops would love for you to check out their holiday delights too.

The Heathman: Shines Again in 2012

The Heathman Hotel in Kirkland won Conde Nast's prestigious Reader's Choice award of being ranked #1 in the Northwest and the 88th best hotel in the world. Congrats! Obviously already at the top of their game, we can cue a warm welcome for Troy Longwith, the new Heathman Kirkland General Manager (photo). I had a chance to meet with him last week and asked what his goals are for the acclaimed hotel. "Right now my goal is to observe and learn and see what makes this hotel tick. I don't plan on making major changes." Troy is a seasoned hotelier with extensive experience at names you might recognize like The Fairmont Hotel and Tulalip Casino Resort. He's enjoying the Kirkland community and the 91-room hotel and getting to know everyone here.

Troy took me on a tour to see all of the improvements that have been completed since water damage closed the hotel over the summer. There is a new library, plenty of business meeting spaces and the fitness center has moved to the lower level. Kudos for adding the extra 2 bathrooms on the main level. And, of course, in true Heathman style there is more amazing art. This Jerri Lisk is one of my faves. Apparently, Chef Brian from Trellis even has a 'root cellar' on site where he has harvested root vegetables stored so he can bring them straight to your dining table. Which brings me to this fabulous salmon/squash special I had for lunch ( I may have been photo happy on this particular day).

So, if you're in the neighborhood be sure to welcome Troy to Kirkland. He's promised to keep his 9 and a half year old twin boys away from my 9 and a half year old twin girls. But seriously, this local Cougar fan loves his job b/c it's different every day and he gets to meet people from all over the world. The irony of this does not escape me. Puget Sound Energy is doing a "Re-Energized by Design" challenge and we have a Kirkland resident that is a finalist! Making us proud! Rosalie Wessels is one of 20 and needs your vote before November 18th so she can be considered for the final selection interview. After that, six contestants will be chosen to participate in a room-by-room design challenge that will show you how you can bring energy efficiency to simple home projects.

I wish that Tom, the most energy-efficient Kirkland Blog reader on the planet, was in this contest too. I'll be he'd come up with some awesome ideas to win him the GE lightbulbs, Frigidaire appliances and $5k grand prize. I think Rosalie should call him in as her secret weapon. Just sayin'. Guess What? It's Christmas

That's right, we sometimes skip over Thanksgiving and head straight for the presents. And from the election results it sounds like you may each be receiving a bag of weed in your stockings this year?. And some Doritos too. Huh. It's amazing how close many of the races were, especially knowing that only 55% of our voters voted. I am just glad to no longer have to tolerate automated political telephone calls and friends' empassioned facebook posts. Enough of that..moving on...

After countless hours of faithful service and tail wags, Woody, the Woodmark Hotel, Yacht Club & Spa’s resident Labradoodle and director of guest satisfaction, is retiring. To celebrate Woody’s retirement, the Woodmark Hotel, located on the shores of Lake Washington on Carillon Point and the only Seattle-area lakefront lodging, has partnered with CityDog Magazine to host the inaugural Howl-at-the-Moon Muttmixer on Tuesday, October 30.

I've had some friends go to Volterra, which recently opened at 121 Kirkland Ave, and say they enjoyed it. We just haven't rushed out there since we usually try to avoid pasta/grains and are never sure what kind of options we might find at an Italian restaurant. Let me tell you- Volterra is worth the stop. O-M-G (as my nine year olds would say). What a great addition to Kirkland! When you walk in, you kind of get that cozy, hip, contemporary feel like you are in Seattle and then to our surprise and delight the food and service delivered as well.

It was a Thursday, about half full and we ordered some martinis, wine and caesar salads to start. Our waitress was kind and gracious and we enjoyed sitting near the open kitchen. She told us that the bread was from an original start in Italy that they had kept going, so of course we had to try it with this olive oil and special blend of seasonings to dip it in. Steve ordered the wild boar tenderloin with gorgonzola sauce ($26,photo) and I the seafood stew ($28, photo) which were both A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. But so many other options too like Wild Shrimp and Porcini with Black Pepper Fettucine ($20) or Dungeness Crab Ravioli ($21) or Braised Lamb Shank ($29)

You can catch happy hour from 3-6 Mon-Fri or lunch/dinner any day starting at 11:30 am. The dinner menu has so many tempting options it's hard to choose. And it's obvious that critics far superior to the Rabuchins have checked out Volterra (in Ballard) and put it on their favorites list, but at least we are all in agreement.
