Tiling shower can be hard work, but the investment of redoing is worth the life of your shower. Most popular tile is ceramic tile, and is probably the best bang for your buck. Once its installed you can have it sealed with an epoxy coating.

Ceramic tile is popular due to its durability and flexibility. Can be applied to most tiling needs. Easy to install and to maintain the cleanliness. Once you have the shower gutted out, be sure to have a vapor barrier put in, great against mold & mildew.

Next would be the cement board backer. Its like putting in drywall, cut it to size, and screw it in. Use 100% silicone caulk to seal the seams between the panel. The rest is putting up your tile. Almost to last is to apply the grout, allow 24-48 hours to dry before putting on the epoxy coat. Most of the steps is methodical, so its best to have it done by a professional like us.

Here is something that you may have seen in your kitchen hardwood floors as time goes by. Its called "washboard", its when the edges of your floor is high with the center is at sinking in. This is natural as time goes by, and yes you should do something about it.

Moisture through the imbalance is the cause, the material was manufactured flat so it was installed flat. What you want to do is find the cause of the moisture.

Cause

Airborne - humidity - dehumidify the area

wet basement - ventilate - dehumidify - use fans to cover the vents & crawlspace
Expansion - if you had expanded the hardwood floors this may have moved the floor tight to vertical surfaces

Cure

Allow time, take time for floor to adjust, after stabilized sand flat and if applicable apply a quality hardwood floor seal. Get a quality brand concrete floor coating designed for hardwood settings.

Working On Garage Floors

Spring is around the corner and its time to redo your garage flooring. You can clean it out and lay down some quality floor matts or, you can protect it with a concrete floor coating that will last longer than the matts. Maybe convert the garage into a room and restyle the flooring.

Before we talk about the type of seal, its important to do a thorough clean up and repair of the floors if needed. This particular stage is crucial, because if you do a poor job of cleaning, the result can be disastrous. You can possibly spend more money to redo the job.

The seal that we recommend that you use is a mono epoxy coating. Epoxy paint is water proof and no "volatile organic compounds". This is a major health concern if you're not careful. There are 2 types of epoxy paint that you can use.

One is oil based and water based. Oil based usually have little to zero "voc". The cost is affordable compared to the water based epoxy paint. However, water based is becoming more popular than oil due to the health issues. Thus, costs more but not much.

You can buy from hardware/paint stores or factory direct. Factory direct can be more affordable with quality brand. So its something to think about. If you are inexperienced on working on concrete floors, give us a shout we can help.

Sealing Hardwood Floors

Protecting your unfinish kitchen hardwood floor with an epoxy floor coating is worth the money. Preparing the floor for the seal is critical. You must sand the wood to smooth it out and to open the pores so the finish can absorb easier.

Once done, you might want to do a thorough vacuum and sweeping. Sanding may need to be repeated, but try not to over sand. For the finer dust pick ups, use a damp cloth.

There are 2 different types of seal, water-based and solvent. Water based is getting more popular due to going green. It does cost a little more than the solvent. Solvent based face disposal issues and high volatile organic compounds which is a health concern.

Some solvent types are polyurethane. The polyurethane finishes are probably the most commonly used hardwood flooring sealant. The balance between durability, cost and appearance finds a sweet spot here. Relative to other finishes, they are simple to apply and dry within 6 hours.

Hardwood floors are a beauty once you have them installed in your kitchen. If you're redoing your floors and want to put on a protective coat. We recommend you try a clear 1 part epoxy sealant to protect your hardwood floors.

Kitchen remodeling can be a pain or can be where creativity comes in. Previously we had talked briefly about the kitchen work triangle. Its importance of being centered on where you can easily access the cooking and the meal prep area. Having a great layout is the key. There several different types of layout, here are some:

L Shaped - Pictured above, this is the most popular kitchen design. Consists of a long leg and a shorter one and this type of design can be used in small and large kitchens. The L-shaped kitchen gives you the possibility of having a center island depending on the space available. In general, this design will have 2 or 3 appliances on one wall. The usual arrangement is to have the refrigerator at one end, the range or cooktop at the other end with the sink located in the middle. This shape of kitchen generally provides good traffic flow.

Double L Shaped - This kitchen design has a lot of cabinet space and plenty of counter space. This design is used in large kitchens with two cooks, and it has two or more entering areas, which can cause traffic flow problems. To avoid some of these problems, create two separate working areas on each L of the kitchen so that workflow does not get interrupted by human traffic.

Q: What is the kitchen "work triangle" and why is it important? This is a question that we see on the web, and sometimes customers will ask us something about it. Of course, in a dialog its more of, "I want my kitchen easily access where my stove and cutting station, pots and pans are in where it doesn't get in the way, etc...
Heres a quick answer to the kitchen "work triangle".

A: The "work triangle" is the kitchen area from the refrigerator to the main cooking area to the main sink. Connect the three and it should form a triangle (unless you have a 'one-wall' kitchen). It's important because at or immediately adjacent to the triangle's points, all the key kitchen activities - food preparation, cooking and clean up - take place. The work triangle helps to ensure that your kitchen will be functional. It keeps cooking activities centered in one area, with all the necessities close at hand.

Q: Here's another related kitchen question, Where's the best place to put a microwave?

A: Like most things about your new kitchen, it will depend on how you and your family use the appliance. From a safety and accessibility standpoint, the microwave should be positioned so that the bottom of the appliance is 24" to 48" above the floor. I think common sense plays a role here.

Q. How much will it cost to remodel my kitchen or bathroom?

A: The price for a new kitchen will be affected by (1) where you buy it (2) what features it includes and (3) the brands/models you select. (full install)

For kitchens, pricing can range from $5,000 or so (if you do some work yourself) to as much as $150,000 and higher. On average, a kitchen will cost from $15,000 - $26,000, including design, products and installation.

Q. What makes a kitchen more or less expensive?

A: Cabinets account for about half the cost of the project and will have the greatest impact on your budget. They range in price considerably based on quality, the type of material they are made of, and whether they are stock (ready made in specific sizes) or custom.

The material you choose for surfaces including counters, backsplashes and floors can also account for in price.

Q: How can I possibly pay for a new kitchen?

A: Like any big investment, you should only spend what you can afford to spend. That means setting a budget and sticking to it. If you work with a professional kitchen designer, he'll help you make the most of it - and he'll respect the budget you've set.

As for payment, there are a number of options. Some homeowners tap into personal savings to get the kitchen of their dreams. Others take out home equity loans. Then they'll come to your home to take careful measurements of the space, make note of plumbing and structural elements, and get a feel for your home's style. He'll also ask a lot of questions about your kitchen or bathroom, lifestyle and family. He'll be listening carefully so that the finished room you work to create reflects your personal taste and how you use the space. You'll choose products, colors and materials together, working within your budget. The relationship can go only as far as creating your design, or you may have the design professional act as a consultant, or he may manage the entire project for you - including hiring sub-contractors and scheduling the work and supervising the installation.

Q: What can I do myself to help cut costs?

A: How much you can or should attempt to do depends on your ability and knowledge of remodeling. You'll definitely be able to tear out old cabinets (be careful not to damage walls and beams), take up old vinyl flooring and handle trash removal. You may also want to paint or wallpaper on your own. You're better off letting the pros handle plumbing and appliance hook-ups - if you try it on your own, you may violate building codes or invalidate manufacturer warranties. And let a professional installer put your new cabinets in so that they look their best.

Q: What about contracts and orders?

A: Before any work begins on your kitchen, get detailed, written estimates, project specifications and signed contracts from the professionals you hire. Make sure they're bonded and insured. (If you work with an NKBA member, he/she will likely coordinate all of your sub-contractors for you.) Check references carefully. Your designer should prepare project drawings including floor plans and renderings that clearly represent your project. If anything changes mid-project, you should be asked to sign a change order.

Q: What about payment?

A: Most firms will require a percentage (usually 50 percent or so) when you sign the contract, additional payment (usually 40 percent or so) when cabinets are delivered or installation begins, and the balance (10 percent or so) when the job is complete. You may also be required to pay a design retainer at the start of the job.

Q: What is GFCI and do I need it?

A: GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters. GFCI monitors the balance of electrical current moving through the circuit. If an imbalance occurs, GFCI cuts off the electricity. Its purpose is to prevent fatal electrical shocks. As you know, water and electricity are a deadly combination. Since both are necessary in kitchens and bathrooms, all switches, sockets, breakers and circuits for those rooms should be GFCI protected for your family's safety.
