Event Description: The Internet could well be considered the largest publishing house on Earth, and online communication is fast becoming a key component of many jobs across various industries. Unfortunately, the rules of Web writing are different from those of print, so even experienced writers and editors can find themselves at a loss when faced with Web copy, to say nothing of those who were not professional communicators in the first place. This seminar will address the differences between print and Web copy and provide tips and techniques for writing and editing content appropriate for a number of online delivery platforms, including corporate or organizational websites, blogs, social media tools, and e-commerce sites. Event Description: “God is in the details,” the old saying goes—though any editor who has agonized endlessly over a comma or a hyphen might argue that a much darker entity lurks there. This seminar takes an appropriately detailed look at punctuation and mechanics, including commas (what’s right, what’s wrong, what’s optional), semicolons, colons, quotation marks, apostrophes, dashes, hyphens, italics, and the ever-perplexing bullet points. The session presents up-to-date rules and guidelines, examines how punctuation and mechanics affect meaning (for instance, the relationship between commas and modifiers), and looks at some of the most useful style guides available. There will be group and individual exercises throughout the day, and participants are encouraged to bring along troublesome samples for discussion. If you are an EAC member living in the Kitchener-Waterloo-Guelph region, you have the option of switching your branch affiliation to the KWG twig. Your branch/twig affiliation would normally be with the branch or twig where you expect most of your participation and interaction with EAC to be. Switching will cause the part of your membership fee that used to go to the branch to go to the twig instead. Switching will also ensure that you receive email announcements of upcoming KWG twig events in addition to emails about the local branch events. If you wish, you may opt out of receiving future branch announcements. Please note that all EAC members, regardless of branch affiliation, can attend Toronto events for free and are eligible for member rates at seminars, and that twig members in the GTA region will also be welcome to volunteer for seminar hosting, Edition, the mentorship program and other major initiatives.
