Mowing

As professional and trained garden designers serving Cobham, here at Kite Landscapes we understand the importance of the correct mowing frequency depending on the time of the year. Unfortunately we see far too many instances where people have cut their grass too much during the winter.

It will largely depend on the weather conditions and temperatures, but it is important that you only mow the lawn when necessary, and never cut the grass when heavy frost is forecast or the ground is very wet.

Keep Your Lawn Aerated

This is a measure that will often be overlooked by amateur gardeners, but it is an important element of your winter lawn care.

Using an ordinary garden fork, plunge to about 10cm into the earth in consolidated areas. This serves a number of purposes, including bringing in fresh oxygen, avoiding compaction and improving drainage. The latter is especially important in winter as there is typically an increased level of moisture on the ground. After a spell of heavy rain, be sure to check for puddling of water to identify areas that need attention.

Avoid Feeding

Although you may use fertiliser in the spring and summer to speed up growth, you could be doing more harm than good by using it in the winter. Your grass will naturally grow at a slower rate during the colder months, but by using fertiliser you will be inducing a premature growth that will be unable to withstand the weather conditions, and you could in fact kill the lawn.
