Forget Black Friday. Why not get a black cat? Or, any other color cat. You will be grateful you did. )

Check out this deal from the ASPCA

During the time-honored tradition of Black Friday, bargain shoppers will be on the hunt for great deals galore, but New Yorkers might be overlooking the best Black Friday deal of them all: ‘Cat Friday’ at the ASPCA Adoption Center, where all felines over one year of age will have their adoption fees waived! While a new TV or the latest kid’s toy might provide hours entertainment, a pet will bring your family a lifetime of happiness and create lasting memories. Is there really any better way to celebrate the spirit of the holidays than giving a homeless cat a place to call their own?

Here are the details on this event:
       ASPCA’s ‘Cat Friday’
       Friday, November 25th during the extended hours of 10 a.m. – 10 p.m.
ASPCA Adoption Center - 424 E 92nd Street (between 1st and York Avenues) on the Upper East Side of Manhattan

Additional details for adopters:
This deep discount on adoption fees is just one great deal that the ASPCA is offering. With each of these special adoptions, adopters will receive additional goodies, including a free cat collar and ID tag, a cardboard carrier for safe travels home and a surprise gift to help get the holidays started with their new family. All ASPCA pets are spayed and neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and even microchipped! Plus, adopters will receive a certificate for a free vet visit within 2 weeks of adoption at our Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital.
There are so many wonderful cats and dogs in shelters throughout New York City – including at the ASPCA Adoption Center – who would love to find a home for the holidays.

Happy Thanksgiving.

The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) is celebrating the one year anniversary of “Operation Pit,” the program that offers free spay/neuter or vasectomy surgeries to all healthy pit bulls and pit bull mixes between the ages of three months and six years, along with free vaccinations and micro-chipping. Throughout the year, “Operation Pit” procedures take place every Tuesday and Thursday at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in Manhattan. To mark this milestone and to encourage continued participation, appointments for “Operation Pit” will also be available for Friday, July 15.
Since its launch on July 15, 2010, 583 surgeries have already been performed through “Operation Pit.” “I am very pleased by the success that we’ve had thus far,” said Dr. Louise Murray, vice president of Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital. “Outside of ‘Operation Pit,’ pit bulls and pit bull mixes make up a very small percentage of dogs that are brought in for routine spay/neuter procedures at Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital. Pit bulls also have large litters compared to other breeds, so it comes as no surprise that they make up a vast majority of homeless dogs found in city shelters. One of the most effective ways to manage this overpopulation is to provide free spay/neuter services.”
More than 50,000 homeless pets enter city shelters each year. Reducing this number depends on increasing adoptions and decreasing overpopulation. The ASPCA Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinics spayed and neutered close to 30,000 cats and dogs in 2010. However, the vast majority of dogs that are still euthanized due to lack of homes are pit bulls and pit bull mixes. With programs such as “Operation Pit” the ASPCA hopes to reduce this number.
In addition to a free spay/neuter or vasectomy surgery, vaccinations and micro-chipping, dogs who have the surgery will also receive free K9 camouflage “doggie gear” and a post-operative “honorable discharge” for completing the mission.
All appointments for “Operation Pit,” including those for Friday, July 15, must be scheduled prior to the surgery date. All procedures are completed the same day, and owners can drop off and pick up their pets at scheduled times. For more information and to schedule an appointment, owners can call the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital at 877-900-PITS (7487). Details can also be found online at www.aspca.org/aspca-nyc/operation-pit.aspx.
Appointments can also be scheduled for select Sundays at the ASPCA’s new spay/neuter clinic in Glendale, Queens by calling 877-SPAY-NYC (7729-692).
Casita Maria is proud to present two concurrent exhibits: one features artwork depicting animals, the other features artwork depicting humans. The work will cohabitate the same space and elucidates the complicated way we identify as individuals and social beings, once wild.

^..^
Someone let the dogs out in contemporary art! Brent Birnbaum presents a selection of New York City’s talented emerging artists, in a show aptly titled ^..^ which acts more as a symbol (think perky ears) than a slogan. The work of eight artists was chosen for its depiction of animals as vehicles for exploring the human condition, surrogates for human emotions, and/or factual explorations of our relationships with other species. From guard dogs to presidential dogs, and tattoo flash to anthropomorphized creatures, no one here is barking up the wrong tree.

Adam Parker Smith, Allison Hester, Allison Hawkins, Irena Jurek,
Ryan Sullivan, Patrick Marcoux, Doug McQueen, Daniel Heidkamp

:)
Carolyn Salas and Fran Holstrom paired up to present a group exhibition titled, :) The work in this show ranges in its motivation, expression and interpretation of portraiture in contemporary art. Some of the artists included know the person they are depicting, some depict themselves from memory, while others create more open-ended documents or abstract figures meant to appeal to the “everyman”. Whether rendered with a careful hand or an expressive brush, the viewer is offered insight into the existence of others, which inevitably causes self-reflection, doubt and comparison, all of which are fundamental to our realization of “self” dependent on the pack for our individual identities.
But it is The Year of the Rabbit. We wanted to look out for our rabbit friends and share this press release with our readers. Happy I love NYC Pets Month!

First Rabbit Event in Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals’® Annual I Love NYC Pets Month

The colorful 12th Annual Lunar New Year Parade, which takes place in Manhattan ’s Chinatown on February 6th, will feature a special windowed vehicle showcasing over a dozen rabbits that can be adopted from Rabbit Rescue & Rehab at Animal Care and Control of NYC. This event is among the first of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals’ fifth I Love New York City Pets Month held each February to encourage New Yorkers to adopt a homeless pet. February is also Petfinders’ official Adopt a Rabbit month.

Most people are aware that cats and dogs are available for adoption but the national House Rabbit Society and New York’s Rabbit Rescue and Rehab want everyone to know that rabbits can also be adopted and that they can be loving pets, ideal for apartment living. Rabbits can be adopted at Animal Care and Control of NYC, 326 East 110th Street .

The Lunar New Year Parade is one of the highlights of NYC’s festival season – balconies and stores are festooned with colorful decorations, teams of youthful lion dancers perform throughout the day and floats wind their way through the streets. The Chinese Lunar New Year Parade is organized by the Better Chinatown Society. Rabbits are considered lucky by the Chinese, and particularly in the Year of the Rabbit, so the rabbits riding in the windowed van (provided by North Shore Animal League America , an Alliance Participating Organization), will be a popular attraction.

The Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals’ Fifth Annual I Love NYC Pets Month features numerous adoption events and other activities to support the organization’s goals of increasing pet adoptions and spay/neuter rates, and transforming New York City into a no-kill community. These events shine a spotlight on the NYC’s homeless pets and the fact that pets are family, too!

Another highlight of the month is a February 19th Spay Day event, jointly hosted by the Mayor’s Alliance , ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). The event will feature pet adoptions; free spay/neuter clinics, microchipping, dog licensing, and vaccinations; plus information from pet experts, exciting giveaways, and more.

On February 23, the Mark Garrison Salon at 108 East 60th Street will host a fundraiser for the Mayor’s Alliance , with participation by the “Doggie Moms,” a new reality television show of the same name, which will include important information about City resources for dog owners, premiering in mid-February on NYC life (channel 25).
About the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals®
The Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, Inc., founded in 2002 and powered by Maddie’s Fund®, The Pet Rescue Foundation, with support from the ASPCA, is a coalition of more than 150 animal rescue groups and shelters working with Animal Care & Control of New York City (AC&C) to end the killing of healthy and treatable cats and dogs at AC&C shelters. To achieve that goal, the Alliance, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, helps its Alliance Participating Organizations (APOs) work to their highest potential to increase pet adoptions and spay/neuter rates, with the goal of transforming New York City into a no-kill community by 2015.
Anjellicle Cats Rescue (ACR), a no kill cat rescue and adoption organization, presents “Catberet” a special fundraising cabaret show to be held September 13, at 7 p.m. at the Laurie Beechman Theater, 407 West 42nd Street, Manhattan.

Ninety percent of ticket sales will go directly back to ACR and its efforts in rescuing New York City ’s many homeless and abandoned cats and kittens.

The Cabaret will provide entertainment that celebrates the feline qualities of life and feature some of ACR’s adoptable cats as represented by the performers. Performances will encompass singing comedy acts, and monologues. Tickets are $20 and there is a $15 food/drink minimum. The food/drink minimum covers the cost of the theater. Reservations are recommended by calling 212-695-6909.

About Anjellicle Cats Rescue
Anjellicle Cats Rescue is a no-kill, all-volunteer, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, and a member of the Mayor's Alliance and a New Hope Partner with the New York City Animal Care & Control (ACC). The organization was founded 15 years ago by Kathryn Willis and is headquartered in Hell’s Kitchen in the Spoiled Brats Pet Food & Supplies. Anjellicle Cats Rescue works closely with the ACC to pull out the cats that are in danger of being euthanized. Each rescued feline receives medical attention, and is placed in a foster home until a permanent home is found for the animal. For more information on Anjellicle Cats Rescue, visit www.anjelliclecatsrescue.com.

Anjellicle Cats Rescue Mission Statement
Anjellicle Cats Rescue (ACR) is a 501(c)(3) volunteer organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and adopting out New York City’s homeless cats and kittens, with a focus on local shelter animals in immediate danger of being euthanized. Through a coalition of volunteer advocates and foster caregivers, ACR extends a last minute lifeline of time, attention and care needed to ultimately place these abandoned animals into permanent, loving homes. We believe that no animal should be ill-treated and strive toward a day when
awareness, education and compassion have served to permanently replace euthanasia as a solution to companion animal overpopulation.

Humane Law Enforcement agents of the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) arrested Far Rockaway Queens resident Adalberto Fuentes yesterday for neglecting his 10- to 12-month-old female pit bull.

The dog was found dead in a Queens backyard by ASPCA Special Agent Debbie Ryan on July 7. Veterinary reports indicate the dog had a skeletal appearance and was starved. Neglect, coupled with extreme heat, which reached the upper 90s that day, were the apparent causes of death.

Fuentes, 23, was charged with one count of cruelty to animals and faces up to a year in prison if convicted.

To thank their loyal clientele and celebrate the opening of their new state-of-the-art veterinary hospital, Bronx Veterinary Center will host two family fun open houses featuring games, raffles and much more. The open houses are planned for Sunday August 8th from 1 to 4 p.m. and Tuesday August 10th from 5:30 pm to 8 p.m. at the Veterinary Center.
Both open houses are free and open to the public. Each will feature tons of giveaways, complimentary entry into a raffle for an Apple iPad and Apple iPod, many door prizes, face painting and craft tables, activities for kids of any age, a magician and clown, as well as a number of pet care demonstrations. Bronx Veterinary Center is also providing free gourmet food and beverages from the new Kasike Mufungo.
Dr. Steve Katz and his wife Nicole first started providing pet care for the many pet owners of the Bronx more than 15 years ago at Concourse Animal Hospital. As their reputation for honest and compassionate care grew, they soon began to dream of building a larger, state-of-the-art facility for the expanding number of clients and pets. Bronx Veterinary Center is the realization of that dream.
“The open houses are a way to celebrate and say thank you to our dedicated pet owners who have helped make the new facility possible,” said Practice Manager Nicole Katz. “It is also a great opportunity for our clients and members of the community to come in and see what goes on inside an advanced animal hospital while having fun with their kids and enjoying the free outdoor activities.”
Dr. Katz proudly points out, “We are not just another animal hospital. We work hard to earn our clients’ loyalty by treating them with respect, striving to be affordable, and providing the best care to their beloved pets with kindness and compassion.”
Bronx Veterinary Center opened May 3rd 2010 in a 5,000 sf. modern facility. It is open 7 days a week and offers high quality veterinary care for dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, and exotic pets at very affordable prices.
New Executive Director of Animal Care & Control of NYC, Ms. Julie Bank

NEW YORK--The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) and Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals® are pleased to welcome New York City’s new Executive Director of Animal Care and Control, Ms. Julie Bank.

Ms. Bank, who will assume her duties on April 12, 2010, has more than 20 years of animal welfare experience. Most recently, she served as Executive Director of North County Humane Society and SPCA (NCHS) in Oceanside , Calif. , where she was responsible for managing a full- service organization that managed two animal control contracts with local municipalities. She also successfully negotiated the merger between NCHS and the San Diego Humane Society.

“Ms. Bank’s experience and commitment to providing positive outcomes for homeless animals is longstanding and will assure that New York City’s resources are coordinated and focused on serving our at-risk animals and solving the problem of animal homelessness,” said Ed Sayres, President and CEO of the ASPCA.

Added Jane Hoffman, president of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, “Homelessness is the No. 1 risk factor for companion animals, and with 42,000 homeless animals entering our city’s shelters each year, New York City needs a leader who will be able to provide life-saving outcomes for cats and dogs.”

Since 2003, the city’s euthanasia rate has dropped from 74 percent to 33 percent, its lowest rate in history. In addition, over the past nine years, adoptions have increased 130 percent. This progress has been made possible by the Mayor’s Alliance Participating Organizations (APOs), a coalition of 160 animal rescue groups and shelters, including the ASPCA, that routinely transfer animals in danger of being euthanized from the city’s public shelters to groups and organizations that can guarantee placement.

“Collaboration is a key component of our success in New York City , and as she’s demonstrated throughout her career, Ms. Banks understands the importance of partnerships,” added Sayres. “We look forward to working with Julie to continue NYC’s progress toward becoming a no-kill city”.”

Prior to her role at NCHS, Ms. Bank was the Deputy Director of Maricopa County Animal Care & Control where she handled marketing, public relations, fund-raising and public programs. She also served as Director of Education and Therapeutic Programs for the Arizona Humane Society.

Ms. Bank began her career at the ASPCA in New York City where she held various positions from shelter operations to humane education outreach over a ten-year period. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Ms. Bank is a graduate of Brooklyn College and looks forward to returning to her hometown, along with a rescued French bulldog named Lola and a cat named Carmen.

Tipton, PA -- With Valentine’s Day approaching, non-profit Dogs Deserve Better is asking for help from dog lovers in an unique direct mail outreach which pairs Valentines created by schoolchildren with America's chained dogs.
Dogs Deserve Better, a national rescue and advocacy group dedicated to ending the suffering endured by chained dogs, annually sends Valentines and dog treat coupons to canines across the country. The group includes a brochure for the dog’s caretakers, explaining why the practice of chaining dogs for life is a form of abuse. The materials encourage people to bring their dogs into the home and family or to find better homes for the animals.
By the end of January, the group needs 15,000 addresses of perpetually-chained or penned dogs, volunteers to make the Valentines, and donations of coupons for dog treats or dog food.
“Winter is a critical time to reach out directly to the people who chain their dogs, and what better excuse than Valentine’s Day to send these forgotten animals a little love,” says Tamira Thayne, founder and director of the seven-year-old non-profit. “Every winter our rescuers see dogs that have frozen in the snow, suffered frostbite, or otherwise endured horrific living conditions because of the longstanding misperception that it is ok to chain a dog outside in any kind of weather.”
“This is the perfect opportunity for people who pass chained dogs every day but feel powerless to help them to make a difference,” continues Thayne. “People can anonymously provide us with the addresses of these dogs, or make us a batch of Valentines, and we'll do the rest.”
The creation of the Valentines is an ideal project for schools, scouting troops, and other similar organizations. “Children have a natural affinity for animals and they enjoy making art projects,” says Thayne, an artist herself. "In this way we remind children of proper caretaking, and educate guardians as well."
Although the practice of 24/7 chaining is pervasive in many parts of the country, states and cities have started to pass laws against the practice. So far four states have passed limitations on chaining: California, Texas, Connecticut, and Nevada. Hundreds of cities and counties have passed limitations or flat-out bans.
Meanwhile, countless backyard dogs are spending yet another winter in the cold. Often, they shiver day and night in hole-ridden doghouses, suffer from thirst because their water is frozen, and pace neurotically from lack of exercise and attention. Perpetually chained dogs often become aggressive from their constant confinement, thereby posing a danger to people, especially small children.
For more information about the Valentine’s Day outreach, go to http://www.dogsdeservebetter.org/Valentines2010.html or email info@dogsdeservebetter.org.
Valentines (sized at 4"x 8" max preferred due to postal regulations), addresses and donations for the campaign can be sent to: P.O. Box 23, Tipton, PA 16684. For general information about Dogs Deserve Better go to www.dogsdeservebetter.org.
Kris is my boy cat. He is such a mama's boy. I love him.

He is named Kris because I met and fell in love with my kitty one cold Christmas night in the Bronx. I lived in Massachusetts at the time and took him home with me. Since then, Kris moved with me to Puerto Rico and we are now back in New York City.

He is my big, fat orange cat. My Christmas cat.
