Princess Precious with a Pava

2026-06-04T17:21:45.600-04:00

My beautiful #bullypit celebrates Puerto Rican Parade season. My Princess Precious with love.

Our Princess Precious Brings New Joy

2026-04-02T13:12:00.000-04:00

Our Princess Precious (Princesa Preciosa), my beautiful black-and-white bully girl, is bilingual and has settled happily into our home. Her best friends include two cats: Blessing and Esperanza, and two budgies, Peace and Lovely. Princess Precious brings new joy to our household.

We still cherish the memory of our beloved Shalom, a cockapoo who was also a rescue. He passed away last October at almost 16 years old, having spent nearly 13 wonderful years with me. I miss him every day. Princess Precious is greatly loved and happily part of the Kitty & Doggie News family.

Our angel, Shalom, must be smiling and wagging his tail from #petheaven #rainbowbridge.

May St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals, protect our sanctuary. Amen.

Honoring Shalom's Legacy and Welcoming Princess Precious

2026-03-09T14:19:00.000-04:00

After losing our beloved cockapoo, Shalom, in October 2025, I planned to adopt a new dog in 2026.

Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's were all challenging without my real-life teddy bear, Shalom. December 26, 2025, was especially difficult because it was Shalom's birthday. I adopted him in December 2012, when he was three years old, from the New York City Animal Care Centers. My boy would have turned 16 that day, and we would have celebrated 13 wonderful years together. I adopted Shalom and my cat, Blessing, on the same day, so having my gorgeous, fluffy 14-year-old tuxedo girl made December 26, 2025, a little more special. Shalom and Blessing were beautiful friends who celebrated their birthdays together.

By February 2026, I realized I needed to open my heart to a new dog while honoring Shalom's amazing legacy. I returned to the New York ACC and adopted Princess Precious, my lovely black-and-white bully girl, on Super Bowl Sunday, February 8, 2026. I am sure that Princess and Shalom would have become great buddies, too.

Thank you, Shalom, for the almost 13 years we spent together. I will love you forever.

Welcome, Princess Precious. So far, we have spent one month together, and I have loved you from our very first day.

I would also like to extend my gratitude to the New York City ACC. Love stories are born there, and I have been blessed with three of the greatest love stories.

In Memory of Shalom the Cockapoo (2009-2025)

2025-10-30T21:11:00.003-04:00

Love and miss you forever. Until we meet again. You are the best boy ever. Thank you, my pretty boy, for all the great memories. In my heart always.

NYC History: Pets and the City and The Year of Flaco the Owl

2025-04-16T17:33:00.027-04:00

I attended the Pets and the City and The Year of Flaco exhibitions at The New York Historical Society earlier this month.

Pets and the City explores the visual history of New Yorkers and their animal companions over the last two and a half centuries, tracing the ever-evolving relationship between Gotham’s people and its animals as the city grew increasingly urbanized and industrialized. Through a broad spectrum of works of art, objects, documents, memorabilia, and clips from film and television, the exhibition surveys the evolution of pets—from their presence among the Lenape and Haudenosaunee and the hunting culture of settlers through their insinuation into the urban family and onto the pampered pets of today, which enjoy their own public rights.

Drawn largely from The New York Historical's collections, Pets and the City also investigates the reasons for the soaring pet population, especially after 9/11 and during the COVID-19 crisis, as well as issues surrounding pet adoption, the trafficking of exotic animals, and service animals. This exhibit runs until Sunday, April 20.

But the good news is that The Year of Flaco exhibition runs until July 6. The beautiful and touching exhibition highlights a memorial for Flaco, the Eurasian-eagle owl who won New Yorkers' hearts. Flaco escaped the Central Park Zoo and roamed freely for a year. Flaco enchanted the city until his death in February 2024. Now, Flaco is a legend and a symbol of freedom and resilience.

The Year of Flaco looks back at the year the raptor took to Manhattan’s skies, learned to hunt, and peered into apartment windows.

In addition to photographs and video, this exhibition features letters, drawings, and objects left at a memorial beneath Flaco’s favorite oak tree. It also examines the dangers birds face in the urban environment, the legislation inspired by Flaco’s death.

Here are some images I took at the exhibitions on April 4, which I thoroughly enjoyed as an animal lover and advocate. Let's make New York City even more humane.

From the ASPCA to Carnegie Hall, Seal the Star Seeks Forever Family

2025-04-02T15:34:00.000-04:00

On the heels of April Fool’s Day, I’m reaching out to share a fun story idea highlighting an ASPCA dog named Seal who was “hired” as the first canine greeter at Carnegie Hall, NYC’s most historic concert hall.

While Seal spent the day at Carnegie Hall, parading the concert hall and providing joy for everyone, it was later revealed that she was just there as a temporary mascot. She might not be in a permanent position, but she is looking for a full-time family and audience. Seal is ready to take center stage in her adopter's life and is available at the ASPCA Adoption Center in New York City.

The ASPCA collaborated with Carnegie Hall on a series of social media posts showing Seal, who was given a “bark-stage” pass to the concert venue and dressed in uniform for her “paw-fessional" role, creating a welcoming and positive first impression for concert-goers.

Seal is a fun-loving, affectionate, two-year-old dog who’s always up for an adventure—and when she gets excited, her whole body wiggles with happiness. She was found through the ASPCA’s partnership with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and received specialized medical care to recover from injuries, wounds, and a skin condition before becoming available at the ASPCA Adoption Center.

Given that there are millions of dogs across the country like Seal who are waiting for safe and loving homes, this lighthearted “pup-formance” encourages the public to visit ASPCA.org/Adopt to learn more about pet adoption from the ASPCA or to find a local animal shelter in their area.

(Photos and text courtesy of the ASPCA)

Thanks to the ASPCA for sharing this cute April Fool's story with us. The ASPCA's mission is no joke. They are working to get Seal adopted.

I love Seal and hope she is adopted by a great, loving family who spoils her and takes her to many shows and adventures. Seal has an excellent work ethic too. What a beautiful girl. I bet Carnegie Hall is missing her. -- Clarisel

@ Best in Show: Pets in Contemporary Photography Exhibition

2023-10-30T00:06:00.019-04:00

@ Fotografiska Museum, NYC

The exhibit explores the role our furry friends and feathered friends have played in culture and how they stand as representations of status, power, loyalty, compassion, and companionship through the perspectives of 25 global artists. The exhibit, which is in partnership with Badlands Ranch, tackles a range of topics of interest including the world of pet competitions, animal experimentation, pet food, and pet homelessness and rescue work. Above all, it highlights the great love and bond of animals and their owners in society, especially in our homes and families. It illustrates that pet photography is an art.

The images in this album are of a Kitty & Doggie News visit to the museum on Oct. 22, 2023. As a pet mom, advocate and pet photographer, I recommend this exhibit, which is on view through January 2024. I am inspired to continue taking photos of pets and their people.

‘FASHIONABLE DOGS’ Exhibit at Museum of the Dog Explores Trends and Breeds

2023-10-10T23:36:00.000-04:00

Over the centuries, throughout history, specific dog breeds have gone in and out of fashion. These days, the French Bulldog is a breed very much in style among pet owners.

Dogs are trendsetters in everything from fashion to art and pet ownership.

The current exhibition at the AKC Museum of the Dog in Manhattan chronicles "the rise and fall of dogs in fashion throughout different times of history," said Alan Fausel, curator. "Fashionable Dogs" tracks the popularity of several breeds. It spotlights dog breeds such as the Borzoi, Greyhound, Poodle, Pekingese, Japanese Chin, French Bulldog, and Great Dane.

Alan Fausel, curator, speaks on the "Fashionable Dogs" exhibit at the Museum of the Dog.

Visitors will enjoy paintings, fashion photography, sculptures, and accessories like the famous and emblematic poodle miniskirt.

The wall of the poodles

The art show focuses on how dogs have influenced fashion and how people’s tastes have influenced the popularity of breeds themselves. These include how a dog’s ears should look to the diversity of grooming styles and standards.

According to the AKC, the most popular or "fashionable" dog breed among pet parents today is the playful and adaptable French Bulldog. In the 1950s, poodles were especially popular. Today, poodles are still among the Top 10 breeds.

The French Bulldog is now America's top breed among pet owners.

“Fashionable Dogs” is about the popularity of dog breeds and the trends in the dog world in everything from those in the nobility class to fashion runways and magazines, art masterpieces, and even pet ownership. It showcases works by noted photographers, including Herb Ritts and Weegee, and dogs featured with famous models such as Gigi Hadid, Kate Moss, and Sharon Tate.

The famous Lady Greyhound (Pompous Pooch) by Weegee

The exhibition is not about dogs wearing cute dresses or costumes. Dogs are more than fashion props or cute mascots. Think about that when you see a dog in a magazine or painting.

In all artwork featured, the dogs play a prominent role. Such is the case in an iconic photograph (Kate Moss, Malibu 1994 ⓒ Herb Ritts Foundation), which features British supermodel Kate Moss sitting and hugging a powerful-looking and gorgeous black and white Harlequin Great Dane at a Malibu beach. In the photo, the Great Dane, known as the world’s largest breed and a gentle giant, covers Moss’s body. The Great Dane pictured was Olympian champion diver Greg Louganis,’ 180-pound dog, Brutus.

The beautiful and fashionable Great Dane poses with supermodels.

The exhibition, Fausel said, is a great way to explore the many points of interaction between the dog and fashion worlds. So, the next time you walk your dog in your neighborhood, notice the dogs and the trends you may be setting.

For anyone looking for a dog to add to their family, he said, it is wise to research a dog’s breed to see if it is a good fit. Generally, it is also a good idea to know the history and standards of the dog breed, including the dog’s original job function/ purpose, temperament, health, and lifespan.

The anatomy of the dog

Fausel invites visitors to check the museum’s Library and Archives to learn more about the breeds and their rich history.

The AKC Museum of the Dog's “Fashionable Dogs,” which runs through December 31, is made possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. Hartsdale Pet Cemetery Listed in the NYS Historic Business Preservation Registry

2023-10-09T14:03:00.003-04:00

Hartsdale Pet Cemetery has been included in the New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry. A brief ceremony to celebrate this momentous occasion is scheduled for MONDAY OCTOBER 30TH at 10 AM. Assembly Member Amy Paulin who proposed and sponsored our application will be here to present us with an official proclamation which is very appropriate since she has a plot at Hartsdale where her beloved toy poodle, Hercules, rests. New York State’s Historic Business Preservation Registry is administered by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation and highlights businesses that have been in operation for at least 50 years and have contributed to their community’s history. Other businesses that have received this honor include The Capitol Theater (Port Chester), Tarrytown Music Hall (Tarrytown), Trustco Bank (Schenectady). Hunts Point Produce Market (Bronx), Wilson & Son Jewelers (Scarsdale), Cornell's Hardware (Eastchester), and South Ferry (Shelter Island). A big thank you is owed to our longtime historian, Mary Thurston, who worked tirelessly on completing and filing the application. Thanks to Mary, Hartsdale Pet Cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the NYS Register of Historic Places in 2012. It is currently the only pet cemetery to be listed on either register. Founded in 1896, Hartsdale Pet Cemetery, is the first planned commercial burial ground for animals in the United States and the oldest continuously operated non-human cemetery in the world. Located in the hamlet of Hartsdale within the village of Greenburgh in Westchester County, the cemetery plays a proactive role in promoting public awareness and appreciation not only for its place in American history but for the contributions of animals to society throughout time with guided tours and public events held on the grounds to foster plot-holder comradery and engagement with special cemetery projects. Today the beautiful hillside location, known as the “Peaceable Kingdom”, is the final resting place for more than 80,000 dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, reptiles, monkeys- and even a lion cub that lived at the Plaza Hotel with a Russian princess as well as the cremains of a full-grown Bengal tiger that grew up in an apartment in Harlem, New York. source: Hartsdale Pet Cemetery photos by Clarisel Gonzalez of a visit to Hartsdale Pet Cemetery, summer 2012

Over the centuries, specific breeds of dogs have gone in and out of fashion, accentuating the trends from nobility to the runway. Through paintings, fashion photography, and accessories, this exhibition chronicles the rise and fall of dogs in fashion. "Fashionable Dogs," on view now at the AKC Museum of the Dog, tracks the arc of popularity of several breeds through recent history, diving deep into breeds such as the Borzoi, Greyhound, Poodle, Pekingese, Japanese Chin, French Bulldog, and Great Dane. It is an exhibit exploring the role of dogs in art, fashion, and American history. Definitely worth checking out. A rich educational experience full of dogs and great art. The Dog Museum is conveniently located near NYC's Grand Central Station. A must see if you are a dog lover and want to learn more about the world of dogs and their role in society from pets to show dogs to police and military dogs. The exhibit runs through December 31. To view my full album, visit my photo page at @The AKC Museum of the Dog. An interview with curator Alan Fausel to be posted soon. Here I am enjoying the "fashionable" poodle, one of my favorite breeds featured in the exhibit. I grew up with a poodle. My beautiful black and white beauty, Cindy, in #petheaven #rainbowbridge is my poodle angel. NOW VIEW: Best in Show, a Tribute to Pets Everywhere Art Exhibit at Fotografiska

2023-09-24T10:10:00.004-04:00

Check out Fotografiska New York Stage Best in Show, a Tribute to Pets Everywhere, This Fall With 25 artists, 131 photographs, and accompanying video installations and sculpture Best in Show: Pets in Contemporary Photography explores the intimately personal relationships between pets and their owners.

William Wegman_False Eyes.png

Fotografiska New York opened in September of Best in Show: Pets in Contemporary Photography (September 22, 2023 through January 2024), a joyful celebration of pets and our undying love for them. The sprawling exhibition, featuring the work of two dozen artists arranged across two Museum floors, is a deep dive into the role our furry (and feathered) friends have played in culture and how they stand in as representations of status, power, loyalty, compassion, and companionship.

Among the works on view are examples by William Wegman, famed for his portraits of his Weimaraners; Walter Chandoha, the world’s first professional cat photographer; Sophie Gamand, known for her touching, sensitive photographs of dogs taking baths; and Martin Parr's satirical portrayals of pets across social classes. Curated by Jessica Jarl, Fotografiska’s Director of Global Exhibitions, this exhibition acknowledges our constant companions. Over 130 works, from documentary photographs to arranged portraits to candid snaps, and video works are included.

“During the pandemic, when this exhibition was conceived, pet ownership grew exponentially,” said Sophie Wright, Executive Director of Fotografiska New York. “It’s now rare to walk down a pavement in New York or any big city without passing several dogs and their devoted owners. And that’s not to mention most people’s daily dose of animal videos online—a soothing and often comedic counterpoint to the news cycle. Our mutual dependence leads to the question, who owns whom? This exhibition brings together celebrated New Yorkers such as William Wegman and Elliott Erwitt along with an international roster of contemporary practitioners to explore our relationship to our pets, in all its complexity.”

Best in Show includes several special sections that offer viewers tactile experiences. One area of the show, featuring a video by artist Leila Jeffreys of birds, includes an installation with a bench and trees to mimic the experience of sitting in a park and enjoying nature. Another area features a wall covered in faux fur and portraits of people with their animals, offering a delightful contrast between forms.

Alongside a robust lineup of programming, Fotografiska New York has partnered with pet nutrition brand Badlands Ranch, the ultra-premium dog nutrition brand by Emmy-winning actress and animal activist Katherine Heigl. Partial ticketing proceeds ($1 from every ticket sold) from the exhibition will directly support Badlands Ranch’s philanthropic partner, the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation. "Animals and art are two things I am very passionate about,” says Badlands Ranch founder Katherine Heigl. “So I am excited to celebrate some of the world's greatest photographers and artists while honoring our love for our pets.”

In total, the exhibition features 25 artists (six based in New York) from around the globe including Akseli Valmunen, Areca Roe, Carli Davidson, Dolly Faibyshev, Elliott Erwitt, Gerrard Gethings, Heather Phillipson, Hellen van Meene, Jeff Koons, John Hiltunen, Kári Björn, Leila Jeffreys, Lisa Strömbeck, Martin Parr, Martin Usborne, Ralph Hargarten, Robert Bahou, Robin Schwartz, Sage Sohier, Sophie Gamand, Tim Flach, Visarute Angkatavanich, Walter Chandoha, William Wegman, Winnie Au.

GOVERNOR HOCHUL SIGNS LEGISLATION TO END THE PUPPY MILL PIPELINE

2022-12-15T14:59:00.005-05:00

Wonderful news. As a member of the Voters for Animal Rights and a pet mom, this is a step in the right direction for New York. Remember to adopt/foster a pet in need this holiday season. Please don't shop.

Here's the press release from the Governor's Office:

Legislation (S.1130/A.4283) Bans the Sale of Dogs, Cats, and Rabbits at Retail Pet Stores

Allows Pet Stores to Charge Shelters Rent to Use Their Space for Adoptions

Governor Kathy Hochul today signed legislation (S.1130/A.4283) to ban the sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits at retail pet stores, aiming to end the puppy mill-to-pet store pipeline and stop abusive breeders. Based upon an agreement with the Legislature, this legislation will take effect in 2024 and will also allow pet stores to charge shelters rent to use their space for adoptions.

"Dogs, cats and rabbits across New York deserve loving homes and humane treatment," Governor Hochul said. "I'm proud to sign this legislation, which will make meaningful steps to cut down on harsh treatment and protect the welfare of animals across the state."

Legislation (S.1130/A.4283) aims to prevent the buying and selling of animals from large-scale, abusive breeders that lack proper veterinary care, food or socialization. Often times, these animals have health issues resulting from poor breeding and can cost families thousands of dollars in veterinary care. The legislation will continue to allow pet stores to host adoption services in conjunction with animal shelters or rescue organizations to help connect New Yorkers with animals in need of a home.

State Senator Michael Gianaris said, "Today is a great day for our four-legged friends and a big step forward in our fight against abusive and inhumane puppy mills. My thanks to Governor Hochul for standing up for the voiceless loving animals who are members of our families and deserve the respect we've shown them today."

Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal said, "I extend an enormous thank you to Governor Hochul for signing this legislation to shut down the puppy mill pipeline. New York State will no longer allow brutally inhumane puppy mills around the country to supply our pet stores and earn a profit off animal cruelty and unsuspecting consumers. By ending the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores, shelters and rescues will be able to partner with these stores to showcase adoptable animals and place them into forever homes. Countless families will be spared the heartache of spending thousands on a beloved new pet that is genetically damaged and chronically ill. New York's role as a leader in preventing cruelty to animals will inspire other states to follow suit, and that is something the Governor and all of us can be proud to have accomplished."

ASPCA Pet Fair in the Bronx

2022-08-22T18:02:00.001-04:00

On Saturday, August 20, the #bronx team of the #aspca celebrated a community pet fair at the plaza of the 161 Street office. It was a fun event full of pet goodies and valuable veterinary, nutrition, and behavioral information.

The doggies in attendance got to get their nails clipped. Pet owners were treated to free name tags, food, and cute outfits for their beloved cats and dogs.

The Bharati Foundation was there providing attendees with free story books, essential items, Covid testing kits, fresh produce, and grocery items.

It was especially delightful to see the vets and vet techs playing games, dancing, and having a good time too. It turns out a few of them are also Bad Bunny fans for those wondering about the "un verano" reference.
