Tana and Petra set off from Eden Park Auckland, where the final Rugby World Cup game will be held. Petra travels north to go sand boarding down spectacular sand dunes, and Tana heads to Mid-northern rugby club where he chats to a legendary All Black. It is in Northland they visit the magnificent Tane Mahuta, the largest Kauri tree in New Zealand. After they journey to the Bay of Islands, where they take a boat ride through a hole in a rock.

On this rugby road trip, Tana and Petra cover the area known as the Alpine Pacific triangle -- an amazing region which is full of contrasts. Departing from Christchurch on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island, Petra travels north up the coast to Kaikoura and inland to Hanmer Springs. Meanwhile Tana stops in at a rugby club which has produced many All Blacks, and continues on to a wine region, the Waipara Valley.

Phototourism and Photoblogging is a growing past-time (and occupation) throughout the world and New Zealand is no exception. It is many varied and compelling landscapes and subjects within close reach of the main centers allow for day tripping as well as longer excursions.

In this video (after the jump) intrepid photourists capture the beauty of some of the world’s rarest wildlife on Otage Peninsula, not 1/2 an hour from the City of Dunedin.

Featured in this video is celebrity Aussie blogger Neerav Bhatt. I have guest posted on his blog www.roadlesstravelled.com.au, check it out.

One of the characteristics of summer time in New Zealand is the celebration of food and wine with all things outdoors. The festival is the weapon of choice. This is where hundreds, if not thousands of kiwis are bused, biked or boated in to a wine growing area, such as Waiheke, Blenheim, The Bay of Plenty and Martinborough, and a plied with an over-indulgence of life. Cleo Pascal calls it the symphony of busy happiness.

Food and Wine Festivals in New Zealand have been a staple of the landscape for the last 20 years, the Toast Martinborough is in it’s 21st year and sells over 10,000 tickets for each festival. Although they vary in size and style, they all accommodate the key ingredients of sun, music, food and wine. Each one emphasis one particular ingredient that makes the festival unique and compelling.

Although not unique to New Zealand, it is one of the Kiwi experiences that speaks to travelers:

The atmosphere is what the 1950s pretended to be. Outside, families are picnicking on the grassy slope, watching a cheerful jazz band playing old standards. Older kids are sledding down the grass on sheets of cardboard. Gingerbread cookies and lemonade are for sale. And the teens are flirting in a not-that-I-care-or-anything way.

The Waiheke Island Olive Oil festival this year is on November 20th and 21st. The promoters characterize it as a mixture of Olive oils, jazz, food, wine and song. With 13 different Olive growers on the Island, it promises to be a palate watering experience.

Waiheke olive oils are recognised as some of the best in the world. Try the free tastings & buy at festival prices. The island’s olive harvest has high recognition from New Zealand awards to international acclaim.

Waiheke Island is in the middle of the Auckland Harbour, a 40 minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland. It is the Sausalito of Auckland. An encave of weathly winegrowers, bankers and artists. There are 8000 residents but swell to over 50,000 during the summer.

The festival will be held at Rangihoua Estate Olive Grove - 1 Gordons Rd, Rocky Bay, 20th and 21st November 2010. Toast Martinborough will be held on the 21st 2010 in Martinborough in the Wairarapa Valley, north of Wellington.

Queenstown is a lead character in Bollywood’s latest runaway box office hit, I Hate Luv Storys starring Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor. Movie goers in India and across the world got to see Luv Story for the first time this weekend.

I Hate Luv Storys -- a romantic comedy starring Indian heart-throbs Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor -- has been ranked India’s 12th best net grossing movie of all time on opening day. The movie, which premiered in India on Friday 2 July 2010, saw big city movie theatres filling to the brim. The film is also proving to be a big hit outside of India. Internationally, it has provided the biggest opening day ever for filmstar Imran Kahn.

The film tells the story of two Bollywood actors who fly to Queenstown, in New Zealand’s South Island, to shoot a film and end up falling in love. Director Punit Malhotra -- who came New Zealand looking for “picture postcard locations” -- also fell in love with Queenstown. “As a film maker in Queenstown you don’t have to hunt for good locations. The place itself is one giant exquisite locale,” Malhotra told H T Cafe magazine.

“We were looking for landscapes that resembled Switzerland in Hindi films from the nineties. I came across Queenstown in New Zealand … the place turned out to be perfect. We got an opportunity to shoot around Glenorchy the location for ‘Lord of the Rings’.” “It’s a little far from India but the journey is totally worth it.” he added.

Otira (pronounced or-tear-ra) deep in the heart of the west coast of the South Island is up for sale. The small village (population 40), tucked into the foothills of the Southern Alps is on the market complete with it’s colourful history.

Uploaded on Flickr by digitaltrails

It was originally a stop on the Cobb and Co stagecoach from Canterbury to the West Coast to meet up with the railway line to Greymouth in the west.

Up until 1907 the settlement consisted of a railway station – the terminus of the railway from the West Coast, the Terminus Hotel, Cobb and Co’s busy stables, a school, two stores, a bakery and a handful of cottages near the station. The railway line was then built from Greymouth to Otira, with the pass navigated by coach, until the railway tunnel opened in 1923.

The township was principally old Railways housing to both build and support the tunnel and the railway line . Much of the town was constructed in Hamilton and shipped south to be reassembled on site. The tunnel began work in 1907 and was completed in 1923.

On 4 August 1923 the Otira Tunnel was opened by the Prime Minister, the Right Honourable W. F. Massey and the rail link between the east and west coasts of New Zealand’s South Island was finally complete.

The first hotel was opened in Otira in 1864. Originally there was two hotels, the Gorge Hotel and the Terminus hotel, now known as the Otira Hotel which is now for sale for $350,000.

Bill and Christine Hennah, who are originally from Auckland, are in their 60s and bought the village in 1998 after falling in love with it while driving through. “We felt sorry for the dilapidated pub and run-down houses and decided to buy,” says Christine. The couple says they would like to see Otira go to a younger couple bursting with enthusiasm and ideas. “We need someone to build it up again. There is a lot of potential and opportunity.”

First the hobbits, then Narnia and Tintin, now Toad, Badger, Rat and Mole are to be brought to life by Weta Workshop of ‘Wellywood’ in a big-screen adaptation of The Wind in the Willows.

Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame is the next film in the line of best loved classic fiction being created for the big screen. Willows was first published in 1908. Others include Tintin and Lord of the Rings.

Filming will begin in New Zealand at the end of this year.

The Wind in the Willows is another prospective blockbuster for the Weta Workshop team which now holds a raft of major awards . It centers on the story of four furry friends – Toad, Badger, Rat and Mole, and their adventurous journey towards learning the true value of friendship. In the script, written by Bill Marsilli, the friends band together to save their land from a sinister plot to destroy an uneasy truce between the peaceful animals of the Willows and what remains of Mankind.

New Zealand Māori is a rugby union team that traditionally plays teams touring New Zealand. A prerequisite for playing in this team is that the player is to have Māori whakapapa. In 1888-89, the ‘New Zealand Natives’ was the first time the team traveled overseas, and the rest is history…..

Positively Wellington Tourism and Grow Wellington have joined forces again for this years Wellington On a Plate, an annual festival of food to run from August 14-29th this year. Positively Wellington Tourism General Manager of Marketing Sarah Meikle says the festival will start small and local, but the long-term vision is for Wellington On a Plate to be an annual gourmet showcase that will draw residents into the downtown area and attract visitors from around the country and Australia.

Festival spokesperson Sarah Meikle said the phenomenal success of last year’s event “blew organisers out of the water” and judging by the incredible ideas planned for 2010, this year’s event would be stepping up even further.

Boutique weekend markets are planned to run throughout the festival in Thorndon, a suburb rich with history and also the birthplace of Katherine Mansfield, one of New Zealand’s best-known authors.

Stalls will sell a range of local produce, olive oil, wines, brews, sweets, seafood and sauces.

“There is a great buzz around Rotorua at the moment and the team knows the whole town is behind them. The fact that we are about to play in the same place as the first ever game played by the New Zealand Maori Rugby team 100 years ago, is very special,” says New Zealand Maori Coach Jamie Joseph.

This year’s Sealord New Zealand Maori Centenary Series celebrates 100 years of the New Zealand Maori rugby team. To honour the anniversary, the 2010 team is playing a three-match series – with the first of two internationals matches getting under way against Ireland on Friday. The second international will be played next Wednesday 23 June against England in Napier.

Aussie daily The Sydney Morning Herald this morning claimed victory on behalf of the All Whites draw over Slovakia. The Aussies were miffed that New Zealand was able to extract a draw from Slovakia after their own 4-0 defeat at the hands of Germany.

The sibling rivalry has not faded since the 2-1 Aussie victory over New Zealand in Melbourne last month. This win was clouded by foul play by the Aussies that went un-penalized.

Perhaps we should un-invite Kevin Rudd if he is going to claim Parliament as his own.

New Zealand has again ranked the most peaceful country in the world according to the 2010 Global Peace Index.

The fourth annual Global Peace Index (GPI), compiled by global think tank Institute for Economics and Peace, looked at the relationship between economic development, business and peace.

The report examines key areas of conflict, safety, security and military factors in 149 countries.

New Zealand took out the top spot because of its political stability, safety and harmonious relations with neighbouring countries like Australia, which came in at number 19 in the poll.

The “peace indicators” which the Kiwis outshone their trans-Tasman neighbours in were the number of conflicts fought, the likelihood of violent demonstrations, the level of security required per capita and a number of military factors.

The Kiwis were followed by Iceland and Japan in the poll, while Austria and Norway rounded out the top five.

The institute said small, stable and democratic countries consistently ranked highest and Western Europe was deemed the most peaceful region, with a majority of the area’s countries ranking in the top 20.

This Queens Birthday Weekend, Kiwis of all sizes are celebrating Arbour Day with the annual planting of trees and generally beautifying their neighbourhoods.

Since 1977 New Zealand has celebrated Arbor Day on June 5, which is also World Environment Day, prior to then Arbor Day, in New Zealand, was celebrated on August 4 – which is rather late in the year for tree planting in New Zealand hence the date change.

Tia and Toi Royal Planting at the Pauatahanui Inlet

The founder of Arbor Day was Julius Sterling Morton, a member of Nebraska’s Board of Agriculture. He asked for one day a year to be set aside for planting trees to help save the Great Western Plains. They had been almost totally cleared of trees. As a result the world’s first Arbor Day was held in Nebraska on 10 April, 1872.

New Zealand’s first Arbor Day planting took place in Greytown in the Wairarapa on 3 July, 1890. Following calls for the establishment of a day for tree planting, 4 August was designated as a holiday in government offices for Arbor Day. This country’s first official celebration took place in Wellington that year. From that day, it has become an annual celebration throughout New Zealand.

Repelling advertisers yesterday erected a large billboard expressing Turners and Growers opinion on the Kiwifruit Export Regulations Act of 1999.

Turners and Growers, one of New Zealand’s largest produce exporters is heading a campaign to overturn the monopoly that Zepri NZ has for the export of Kiwifruit. T&G wants the ability to market and sell its own kiwifruit varieties overseas, something that is forbidden under the current act.

Turners & Growers CEO, Jeff Wesley says that the regulatory regime established in 1999 was designed for an industry that only had one commodity to sell. “The Kiwifruit export Regulations 1999 simply haven’t kept up with the growth of new varieties and have become a handbrake on innovation and export earnings.”

In 1959 Turners & Growers coined the name ‘Kiwifruit’ as it worked to establish the export market for NZ-grown Chinese Gooseberries in the United States. Turners & Growers remains at the forefront of the kiwifruit industry with several new varieties that it has developed and tested for production and export from New Zealand. The company holds the global Intellectual Property Rights to ENZAGold(TM), ENZARed(TM) and the regional rights to Summerkiwi(TM).

Moko the Dolphin, a long time resident of the East Coast of New Zealand, has been following the fishing trawler Eskdale on it’s journeys. At Christmas Moko followed the Eskdale away from Gisborne, and from his home beach in Mahia. Today he has ended up in Tauranga harbour much to the delight of the locals.

Moko is so famous in New Zealand, he has a documentary to be shot in eastern Bay of Plenty by film student and marine biologist Amy Taylor.

Kiwi Chocoholics are rolling in anticipation of a Kiwi food festival that’s become an annual get together – Dunedin’s Cadbury Chocolate Carnival.

This year is the carnival’s 10th anniversary in the South Island city of Dunedin, and while chocolate treats and activities are in abundance, all forms of chocolate themed activities are on tap. Highlights of the 2010 carnival will include the annual Cadbury Jaffa Race – a spectacle on the world’s steepest street, Baldwin St.

The family carnival also offers chocolate classes, competitions, storytelling, food tours, games, arts and crafts.

Baldwin Street, Dunedin is recognised as the ‘steepest street in the world’ by Guinness Book of World Records. This year, there will be two Cadbury Jaffa races down the street. The popular race involves rolling a sea of Giant Jaffas, or orange candy-coated chocolate balls down the steep descent, which – in the opposite direction – rises by one metre for every 2.8 metres traveled horizontally.

Each Giant Jaffa is individually numbered by hand and all the money raised from ticket sales go towards chosen charities.

Tourists have been told to get on their bikes with the start of the New Zealand’s national cycleway project and the first of seven ‘quick start’ projects launching in July. The ‘Ruapehu – Whanganui – Nga Ara Tuhono’ trail, which runs from Ruapehu in the central North Island to Whanganui on the western coast, will form part of the ongoing ‘Great Rides’ national cycle network is due to be launched on the 2nd of July by PM John Key.

The first cycle trail, which travels through land protected by the Department of Conservation (DOC), will be launched on 2 July by New Zealand Prime Minister Mr John Key.

The launch of the Ruapehu – Whanganui trail will take place at Ohakune Railway Station with a karakia or Māori blessing and an official ribbon-cutting ceremony by Mr John Key. The prime minister will be one of the first to ride a mountain bike on the new cycle trail.

The Raetihi – Mangapurua Track is an historical highlight of the cycle trail, as it crosses the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ and passes through Mangapurua Valley soldiers settlement within Whanganui National Park. The bridge was built in the 1930s for the first settlers – soldiers who were given land by the New Zealand government for their service during WWI.

The Winter Whale Watch season in New Zealand has begun in earnest and this year looks to be particularly spectacular.

Department of Conservation (DOC) scientist and National Marine Mammal Coordinator Dr Laura Boren says that the number of whale sightings in New Zealand says there have been unusual sightings of rare species includng the Blue Whale.

“We are now entering the beginning of the winter migratory season. Recently, we have been lucky enough to have had two particularly unusual sightings of rare species in our waters.”

Dr Boren says conservation workers in the southern South Island have already sighted a blue whale – by far the biggest mammal on earth, on its way down the Otago coast, and a pod of Arnoux’s beaked whales in Fiordland.
“Beaked whales in New Zealand are largely known only from strandings, so live sightings are a rare and exciting occurrence for us,” Dr Boren said.

Whale Watch Kiakoura

Whale Watch Kaikoura – a tourism business run by the local Ngati Kuri Māori tribe – takes around 100,000 visitors each year out onto the Pacific Ocean to view the giant sperm whale, with a guaranteed 95% success rate.

Whale Watch boats have already sighted two rare massive blue whales out on the water this year.

“Blue whale sightings are not that common here, maybe one or two times a year. However on this particular tour, passengers got not one but two sightings which was very exciting for all on board,” Captain Lisa Bond said.

You can find Whale Watch Kiakoura here.

Boatloads of Australians are cruising to New Zealand, inundating the local waters with refugees tourists.

Australia’s largest cruise operator – Carnival Australia, will more than double its fleet for 2012 to meet increasing demand. The company runs trips to New Zealand through P&O Cruises and Princess Cruises, which have ships based in Australia all year.

Carnival chief executive Ann Sherry said the company would increase the number of cruises from 17 to 38 by 2012, increasing the number of passengers going across the Tasman from 35,000 to 80,000. Carnival Australia would offer 31 cruises to New Zealand next year.

“New Zealand is becoming to Australia what Alaska is to Americans – a very desirable holiday destination that’s ideal to visit by sea,” Sherry said.

Because of New Zealand’s large coast waters there is plenty of opportunity to explore the fiords, inlets and friendly native cities. Auckland is the most-visited destination, but other regional stop overs such as Tauranga, Napier, and Wellington are also popular. Visitors can also choose from a variety of voyages up and down the country. Fiordland cruises offer breathtaking views of the rugged, mountainous South Island coastline, while trips through the sunny Bay of Islands offer sea vistas and local country side.

A clutch of Kiwis on scooters are preparing to assault New Zealand’s Southern Alps on a winter-time expedition – the Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari – that will take them across the South Island. The safari is to raise funds for the New Zealand Cancer Society. Started in 2009, the Scooter Safari was created by Jayne and Mike Rattray. The idea to ride coast to coast as a fundraiser was born in support of Mikes friend and colleague at Air NZ Engineering who had just been diagnosed with Bowel Cancer.

Riders will set off from Christchurch on 29 May to travel the 250km to Hokitika on the west coast. The endurance ride – across the Canterbury Plains, through the mountains and along the rugged west coast. The Arthur’s Pass route through the Southern Alps is one of New Zealand’s great drives, and a popular route for motorists in cars and campervans but not usually on scooters.

Scooter Safari organiser Jayne Rattray says about 170 people have registered as riders, including Air New Zealand staff and their chief executive Rob Fyfe – who also participated in the inaugural ride in 2009.

Tranz Alpine scenery

The Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari follows a scenic route across New Zealand’s largest island. Highlights include Arthur’s Pass National Park, Otira summit, heritage hotels and homesteads, and local businesses. New Zealand is also well known for a quality expresso in the middle of no where and the Southern Alps is no different.

Other refuelling stops include ’hot cuppas’ at Kirwee Tavern near Christchurch, classic Kiwi meat pies at the award-winning Sheffield Pie Shop, and muffins and tea at Flockhill Lodge on the Great Alpine Highway.

The final part of the ride will follow the West Coast’s Great Alpine Highway, a region of diverse scenery, terrain and climate.
