HARTFORD, MI (June 13, 2011) - Round 8 of the AMA Pro Racing Harley-Davidson Insurance Flat Track Championship came to Michigan's beautiful Hartford Motor Speedway-home of the "Wicked Half-Mile"-last weekend, and even powerful rain storms in advance of the event couldn't stop the banked oval from being ready to go come race day.

Rogers Lake Racing/Blue Springs Harley-Davidson's Jared Mees was ready, too, and the former AMA Pro Twins Champion ran away with the 25-lap National, proving he's on a serious hot streak. After struggling early in the year, Mees turned in two wins and a second in just the last three rounds.

"After the California races, I decided I was just going to have fun and win races," said Mees. "I'm not even going to think about points. I was doing pretty good at the Outlaw races, but now it's coming together at the Nationals, too."

Scott Powersports' Johnny Lewis got the holeshot on his Kawasaki and led the first six laps with Mees glued to his rear wheel. Mees was able to power by on lap seven going into Turn 3, and the race for the lead was over as Mees instantly began to gap the rest of the field. Lewis had Kenny Coolbeth and his Harley-Davidson Motor Company-backed machine to contend with for a few laps, but he couldn't hold off Coolbeth for long, and the latter took possession of second for good on lap eleven.

"When I got into second Jared was about half a straightaway ahead, and I thought I might be able to catch him," said Coolbeth. "But he just kept pulling away." Mees crossed the line with more than a 3-second win margin.

The day's fast qualifier, Fasthog.com/American Harley-Davidson's Bryan Smith, was able to secure the last podium slot on lap thirteen. Lewis, meanwhile, dropped back nearly another three seconds into a six-rider brawl for fourth with Lewis, Matt Weidman (White's Harley-Davidson), Chris Carr (American Motorcyclist/Dallas Fort Worth Honda), Jake Johnson (Zanotti Racing), Sammy Halbert (Kings Kustoms / LZ Racing), and Jimmy Wood (Southland Racing).

At the end it was Carr taking the spot on lap twenty-one. Current series points-leader Halbert worked his way around Johnson and Weidman for a hard-earned sixth. Defending AMA Pro Grand National Champion Johnson and his fading brakes held on for an eighth-place finish, just ahead of Wood.

In a preview of things to come, Mees backed up his fast heat time with the Dash for Cash win and the $1,000, picking up the five points that go with it. Johnny Lewis was second, with Heat 2 winner Jimmy Wood third.

Despite the two points Halbert was able to pick up on Johnson, Mees maxed out on points and gained sixteen on Halbert. Heading into Round 9, only seventeen points separate the top three AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship contenders.

The Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles main turned into a two-rider war as series points leaders Gerit Callies (Vortex/O'Neal) and Mikey Avila (Digger 57/M.E.H. Corp) fought it out. Callies held the point early on, but gave way to current points leader Avila on lap eleven of the sixteen-lap event.

Weirbach Racing's Mikey Martin, Bell Helmets/Teknic Leathers' Hayden Gillim, and Scott Powersports' Jake Shoemaker had a great race for fourth, finishing in that order.

I will be the first to admit it, once I find something I like, it is hard for me to move on to something that might be even better. To that end I am pretty much a goggle snob. I have one brand that I have always used and really don’t have much interest in trying something else. Forgive me for saying so, but at times I receive free goggles at industry events and will actually give them away instead of mixing them in with my chosen brand.
Now along comes the EKS Brand goggles. You have to agree that they sure look good. That is what drew me to them initially, thinking how good they would look in a photo shoot. I won’t say that I was hooked after one ride, but I did like them. It is now a full year later and I have been dragging two sets of these around everywhere and have to say that I am a full convert. Let me tell you a little bit why.
Frame Quality – After a year of use, both frames still look like new. The foam is holding up very well, no tears or coming apart. The strap keeps it mojo well and does not stretch.
Lenses – The clarity of the lenses is excellent. The light blue and yellow tints help bring out definition and reduce glare. The clear lens has a slight polarizing effect, again reducing glare. After a year of regular use these are finally due to be replaced.
Air Flow – The foam seems to have a very good balance of air flow. It filters enough to keep most of the dirt out. The big deal for me is that it does not give “too much” flow while dual sport riding on pavement. Many goggles let so much air that the buffeting bothers my eyes. The anti-fog lenses keep things clear under most common fogging conditions.
Fit – All around quite good. They fit well around my face and seal up good. They work in all the helmets I have tried. They are very comfortable against the face.
When new they have a tremendous amount of static and it takes a couple of washings to get rid of that. I normally use Pledge on my lenses. It is a bit difficult to buff off of these lenses for some reason. I spoke with an EKS Brand sponsored rider who tells me he just uses soapy water to clean his lenses.

Motorcycle Helmet labeling rules changed

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has changed motorcycle helmet labeling rules to help consumers and law enforcement better distinguish between Department of Transportation approved and unapproved helmets, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council.

Beginning May 12, 2012, each approved helmet will be required to have a decal with including the phrase "FMVSS No. 218" (for Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 218), lettering indicated the helmet manufacturer's name and or brand name of the helmet and the word "certified" in a horizontally center position underneath the "FMVSS No. 218". The rule also includes details on the placement of the decal on teh helmet.
Those helmets baring the decal must pass a retention test, an impact attenuation test and reach specified conditioning tolerances. The impact and retention test were revised to make them less ambiguous, according to the MIC release.
The new rule comes as the NHTSA was seeking ways to crack down on counterfeit DOT stickers, the organization told The New York Times. The new decals, the NHTSA said, are more sophisticated to reduce the chance of replicas being created. the agency only wants approved helmets marked with the stickers so as to discourage the use of novelty helmets that have failed all or most of its tests.

"Motorcycling With KK" - One of the first Motorcycle TV programs ever

Back in May of 1971 AMA President was promoting a local TV show in the Ohio market. With the help of WKEF-TV "Motorcycling with KK" was aired, covering topics like the Old Time Newsies and the sport of motorcycling. With co-host Johnny Walker channel 22 in Dayton Ohio can claim to be one of the first stations to ever air a Motorcycle program to the mass market. Other episodes covered motorcycle safty, the AMA itself, local riding groups, riding parks and more.

The main focus of AMA president was to use the new media outlet to raise awareness of the sport. This was successful and can be seen by the great response to the Old Time Newsies race of 1971 and the money they raised with ticket sales.

Xpeed XF-2000 Carbon @ KK Motorcycle Supply

I picked up one of our remaining Xpeed Carbons about three weeks ago to replace a dropped helmet. After riding with the Carbon now in all kinds of weather, from snow in February and nice warm sunny skies like today. My first impressions of the helmet is just "WOW" it is a super lightweight helmet with great carbon look. Some other things that make this helmet such a great deal:

Dual intake vents
Triple exhaust vents
Removable/washable liner

The vents are not just great for moving air but are easy to use with riding gloves (both summer gloves and winter gauntlets). The visor stock is clear but as you can see I changed it out to the smoked (KK#1009-152) which is a simple and quick change with out messy tools, or annoying triple or double latches. Simple is the best way to explain this helmet. Clean lines, low noise, easy visor swap, easy liner removal. Not many helmets out there are as great looking, easy to care for and at such a great value for safety as the Xpeed Carbon.
