Have you received your MLS or MLIS within the last 5 years?

If so, you are being invited to participate in a brief survey.

The purpose of this national study is to determine the experience of early-career librarians with professional associations. Specifically, are you attending conferences and meetings, serving on professional committees, participating in formal mentoring programs, and ultimately finding the kinds of opportunities you expected as you began your career? If not, which factors discourage you from pursuing participation in professional activities?

The results of this research will be presented at the upcoming 2009 ALA annual meeting in Chicago and potentially submitted for future publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Please take five minutes to complete the brief online survey that can be accessed at the following URL: http://jmu.qualtrics.com/SE?SID=SV_a3PXI212qcHJgoY&SVID=Prod

Please complete this survey by June 22,2009.Thank you in advance for your willingness to complete the survey! SLA is a terrific organization for specialized subject information and is known for its excellent networking opportunities. Now SLA will also offer more programming and counterpart discussions of interest to academic librarians from all subject disciplines. SLA membership includes one division affiliation and one chapter affiliation at no additional cost (incidentally, the Kentucky Chapter is a very active and fun chapter).

The Academic Division is in the early formation stages, and we need your input to make this division the best it can be in serving the needs of academic members of SLA. We will have a round table session at the Annual Conference in Washington D.C. to solicit your input. If you aren't going to the conference but have ideas for the division, send them to jrfoster@tamu.edu. We'll take them with us to the conference and add them to the discussion.

By joining with other academic information professionals, we can help each other succeed in the academic environment. Visit the SLA website for more information about joining.

Survey: Do You Want a Pre-Conference?

Good morning,

The 2009 Joint Spring Conference Committee is hard at work planning a terrific conference, but we need your help. The program is designed to contribute to the professional development of academic librarians interested in information literacy instruction and improving teaching skills by pairing librarians experienced in teaching with librarians new to instruction or to the Instruction Section OR by pairing librarians just looking to share ideas. The program creates a forum for learning opportunities, networking, and the exchange of ideas between paired mentors and mentees.

As this is the inaugural year for the program, the committee seeks ACRL/IS members for participation as either a mentor or mentee. Participation is primarily virtual, though there will be opportunities to meet in person at ALA Annual and midwinter conferences. Mentoring pairs will be matched after the Annual conference this summer. Deadline for applications is June 20, 2008.
Participants must be ACRL/IS members.

Sign up and see more information about the program at http://www.ala.org/ala/acrlbucket/is/iscommittees/webpages/mentoring/ismentoring.cfm
(http://tinyurl.com/427r62 )

We hope you will join us in fostering professional relationships within the section by sharing your experience and ideas through the new Mentoring Program.
Please contact the committee chair, Caroline Barratt (ismentoring@gmail.com) with any questions.

Presentation link

For slides of the presentation, below, please follow the link:

To See Ourselves as Others See Us - Unity of Purpose: In Concord with Those We Serve Cumberland Falls State Resort, April 24, 2008.
